The Greymouth Coal Project is a proposal to mine by the application of proven hydraulic, and room and pillar underground mining methods; and to process the equivalent of an average of 1.7 million tonnes per year over a forty-year period. The proposed mine site is located ten kilometres north of Greymouth, on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Of the three separate mineable seam groups, the thick Main Seam Group, which makes up 77% of the total resource, will be mined by hydraulic mining technology.   It is proposed to market and produce a high volatile bituminous type coal with low ash (6%) and sulphur (0.4%). Because the inherent ash content is low, the requirement for coal treatment will only be the use of a single cell jig circuit to control the effects of rock dilution and partings. The resulting coal product is tentatively planned to be transported by rail to the port at Lyttelton for loading on to Panamax or Post Panamax size vessels.

The Ernest Henry mine is a transverse sublevel cave (SLC), which is relatively unique due to the 45 degree inclination of the orebody. To economically recover ore, each sublevel is horizontally offset from the previous level by around 25 m, depending on the orebody geometry. Mine development, slotting and initial production within this zone occurs in a high stress abutment that increases in magnitude at depth. These areas are seismically active and close to the hanging wall where cave propagation is yet to initiate. High stress conditions and the close proximity to the cave seismogenic zone results in challenging geotechnical conditions in the step out zone of each level and requires management of hazards including stress driven rockfalls, rock bursts and pillar failure.This paper outlines how these hazards were forecast using numerical modelling and geotechnical monitoring. Risk management techniques included dynamic ground support design, development of a new mine layout and extraction sequence as well as delayed re-entry into seismically active areas. Ongoing monitoring, instrumentation measurements and field observations were used to track the effectiveness of the controls.Future production levels are forecast to experience increasing stress and seismicity, which will increase demand on excavations and installed ground support. The utilisation of low-grade raw materials such as fine iron ore and semi-soft coking coal, and reduction of CO2 emissions are important issues in the ironmaking process. To solve these issues, a new process called PosPRA (POSCO prereduced agglomeration process) has been developing at POSCO. It focuses on the reduction of carbon composite iron ore briquette in travelling grate. In this study, the possibility of manufacturing the prereduced agglomerate (PRA) under oxidising atmosphere with travelling grate and the optimum manufacturing conditions of carbon composite iron ore briquette are investigated. The results have shown that controlling the temperature and oxygen potential in the range from 1100 to 1200°C and below 10 vol per cent respectively is very important to increase the reduction efficiency of briquette in travelling grate. High quality properties of the green briquette and PRA could be manufactured by using the briquette mixed with 20 wt per cent of coal under 0.1 mm in size under compacting pressure in the range from 3 to 7 t/cm. Adding 1 wt per cent water as a binder is proper under the condition of high compacting pressure. In a pot grate test, the compressive strength and metallisation degree of PRA are achieved over 150 kgf/p and about 55 per cent respectively, at bed temperature 1150°C and oxygen potential of 10 vol per cent when 20 wt per cent of coal is mixed in the briquette.CITATION:Wang, M K, Son, S H, Park, J I, Jeong, H K and Cho, B K, 2017. Last evening, in Auckland, I heard the Chairman of Heinz US, Dr Tony O'Reilly (who, in addition to Heinz's ownership of our largest food processor, also has substantial personal investments in this country), advocate New Zealand as a 'regional corporate capital'.   Why would someone like Dr O'Reilly hold that view? No doubt, as one of Ireland's great rugby players of the 50s and 60s, he admires at least one thing that we do very well (confirmed again in Dublin over the past weekend). But that's not sufficient to support such a view.   He cited many reasons for preferring New Zealand over, say, Sydney, Australia, calling this 'the most rational in which to locate [an] international headquarters', including û +         we have no capital gains tax; +         a more 'pro-business environment'; +         a 'first class' legal and banking system; and +         a 'simple political system'.   I can find no better 'text for today's address.

Most epithermal Au-Ag deposits in the Hauraki Goldfield are hosted in late Miocene andesites. Broken Hills is an exception, being one of the few economic deposits hosted in rhyolite. Investigation of Broken Hills provides the opportunity to collate structural data that may be compared with that collected from andesite-hosted deposits in order to evaluate the importance of rock type on vein development. The rhyolite host rock at Broken Hills is strongly flow-banded, but this anisotropy does not appear to affect the orientation of mineralised structures. There is a range of structures at Broken Hills: veins, faults, fractures, and large breccia pipes. Veins generally strike north-south, with localised changes in strike and thickness. Slip vectors determined from striations indicate near pure dipslip on the main lode, indicating an extensional tectonic setting. The orientations of vein deflections are parallel to slip vectors. This correlation is common in modern extensional fault arrays where fault growth and linkage produces subvertical deflections in fault orientation (eg TVZ). There are three main types of breccias: 1. Primary breccias related to rhyolite emplacement. 2. Jigsaw type secondary breccias that are that developed during the life of the hydrothermal system. 3. Breccia pipes. Broken Hills was a dynamic epithermal mineralising system.

High Pressure Sulfuric Acid/Oxygen Leaching of Platinum Group Metals Bearing Ni-Cu Mattes The processing of platinum bearing Ni-Cu ores for the extraction of platinum group metals (PGMs) involves comminution, flotation, smelting, and converter treatment of the furnace matte. Leaching circuits are predominantly used for further processing to separate the base metals and PGMs contained in the converter matte. Nickel dissolution is primarily achieved in the first stage leach (high pressure or atmospheric leaching, or a combination of the two), which is followed by second stage high pressure sulphuric acid/oxygen leaching to dissolve copper and the remaining nickel. PGMs are recovered from the leaching residue in downstream processes, and their dissolution in the first two leaching stages must hence be limited. Studies have been conducted to investigate the leaching mechanisms and kinetics of base metals in different leaching environments. The key operating parameters that influence the leaching kinetics of these metals include the temperature, acid concentration, degree of agitation, feed particle size distribution, and oxygen partial pressure. There is, however, a limited understanding of the behaviour of PGMs in the high pressure leaching process. Consequently, this process is controlled based on operators' intuition despite its importance in the recovery of PGMs. An improved fundamental understanding of the behaviour of PGMs in this leaching environment is required to be able to accurately model the process. This in turn will allow the development of an improved control strategy and the estimation of optimum operating conditions. An overview of the leaching mechanisms of base metals and the effects of key operating parameters on their dissolution kinetics in different leaching environments are presented. Models that have been developed to predict the leaching behaviour of base metals are discussed and evaluated. Finally, initial results obtained with an experimental setup that will be used to investigate the behaviour of PGMs in high pressure leaching systems are discussed and compared with published results.

Application of the Anaconda Simplified Work Index for Multiple Test Sizes Vale uses Bond Work Index measurements extensively in a number of applications. The Bond Work Index is usually a good parameter for checking scale up procedures when sizing ball mills, as well as the basis for variability analysis whenever drill core data is available. It is typical to measure between 100 and 150 Bond Work Indexes, depending on the deposit characteristics. The Bond procedure is relatively complex and time costly. It also requires relatively large amounts of sample, which are very expensive to be obtained. The benefits of the Anaconda simplified procedure are: considerably smaller sample requirements and laboratory time. This makes it very much attractive at Vale's development centre, including geometallurgical mapping, operation efficiency control, mine to mill, etc. The Anaconda simplified procedure was implemented and evaluated at Vale's Development Centre using a number of ores and several samples of each ore totalling more than 190 measurements. The Anaconda simplified method was calibrated for several test sieves and a correlation for any test size was determined for Vale's test mill. The calibration was also extended for two sample top sizes. The relative error of the simplified procedure was found to be in the range of nine per cent which is within the expected error Bond standard procedure. The implementation of the Anaconda method at Vale's development center has been used with great success over the past years in several green field, brown field projects and operating plants.

A good deal of experimental work has been done from time to time on the application of compressed air to the elevation of wet pulp. On account of the flat nature of most of our mill sites elevation of the pulp has to be provided for, and the various methods in vogue show considerable loss of time, in the replaceing of wearing parts. During the last two years the writer has carried out a great many experiments with a view of devising an elevator that will give continuous work with a minimum of wear.The results do not show a high efficiency for the power employed, but the lift is continuous in operation, very cheaply installed, and possesses no wearing parts. The lift was tried working in a bore hole of 8 in. diameter, but in many cases it is more convenient to sink a small well for the purpose. The result to date showed that the most efficiency was obtained when the depth of the wellwas not less than the height of the lift required. The pressure of air required in pounds per square inch was (approximately) half the number of feet to be lifted.In the majority of cases the lift required varied between 20 ft. and 50 ft. and the air pressure required between 10 lbs. and 25 lhs. per square inch. In most existing installations the air compressors in use were delivering air to the receivers at about four times that pressure, and when air so compressed was expanded to perform its work at a reduced pressure, it was apparent that the power exerted in origInally compressing the air above the working pressure required at the lift was absolutely lost.

The object of this talk is to bring before members the importance of the prospector and the' State Battery system to the wealth and prosperity of the mining industry in particular and the State of Western Australia in general, and to touch on the more important features.Customs plants of any sort are usually subject to a good deal of critioism, usually on the large profits made at the expense of the customer, etc., and this often clouds the real value of the work being done.Prospectors, on the whole, are a good class of men; they work under conditions and difficulties which would deter those less spirited. Food, water and mining supplies are often difficult to obtain and frequently have to be transported great distances. Their mining tools are usually of the most primitive type, yet during last year over 109,000 tons of prospectors' ore were handled by the State Battery system for 73,250 fine oz. valued in Australian currency at over £587,000, the value being 57/- per long ton at par.This production brings the State Battery system into fourth position amongst the producers of the State, the yield being exceeded by the Lake View and Star, Wiluna and the Great Boulder.In passing I might mention that these notes were written at the end of the year 1940, and the above figures were for the previous period. The figures for last year, 1940, were not quite so good, being 101,000 tons for approximately 60,000 fine oz., valued in Australian currency at £572,000.In spite of this drop the State Battery system maintained its position as fourth in order of gold output for the State.The extractions, as a whole, throughout the system, were 92·54%, made up of 68·86% by amalgamation and 23·68% by cyanidation. These figures, for a group of 20 plants treating widely different classes of ore, must be considered satisfactory. The total production since inception is over £11,000,000 in Australian currency.State Batteries are usually more or less of a standard design. Ore is reduced to about 2i in. maximum size before being sent to the bins. Challenge automatic feeeders control the feed to each mill unit, amalgamated copper plates collect the free gold. Corduroy strakes are used with some ores after amalgamation, but in only a few cases has this been found of any advantage to the customer.The pulp from the battery is sampled, after leaving the tables, with a "Tazewell" sampler and pumped to dams for subsequent cyanide treatment.The "Tazewell" sampler is a machine driven by the moving pulp; and takes about fifteen dips per .minute from such pulp through a slotted...

Block cave fragmentation has been documented in the literature to have a significant impact on mine design, performance and downstream material handling and comminution processes. Due to this impact, emphasis is placed on the premining prediction and subsequent quantification of primary and secondary fragmentation distribution. This paper discusses the fragmentation prediction and assessment methodology employed at the Ridgeway Deeps (RWD) and Cadia East PC1 (CEPC1) cave operations.Prediction of drawpoint fragmentation was based on an iterative process, which relied on an improved quantitative and qualitative understanding of the rock mass as the mining project developed. In particular, the collection of scanline mapping data provided detailed information in relation to discontinuity trace length, persistence, termination characteristics and large-scale planarity. This allowed an improved estimation of select modelling input parameters, in particular ‘block forming’ discontinuity orientation and strength characteristics.With the start of production, drawpoint fragmentation assessment was undertaken using digital image processing (DIP) techniques for drawpoint extracted tonnes up to 61 000 t. This technique provided a consistent methodology to estimate changes in fragmentation as the block cave matured. It can generally be concluded that the measured mean fragmentation distribution became finer as drawpoint tonnage increased. The incremental change in fragmentation distribution (per 10 000 t) was not uniform, with step changes evident. In addition, for a given geotechnical domain and drawpoint tonnage, the measured fragmentation distribution range was found to vary significantly. A possible explanation for these observations may relate to the disturbed flow behaviour noted from marker experiments at RWD and CEPC1. These experiments indicate that material reporting at the drawpoints (for any given tonnage extracted) may be sourced from highly variable heights within the cave, with finer material preferentially reporting.A comparison between predicted and measured drawpoint fragmentation distribution indicated two general findingsa close match between predicted and measured distributions for material greater than 1.0 m3an under prediction of finer material passing 0.5 m3 relative to measured.The findings would indicate that the fragmentation modelling frameworks utilised at both RWD and CEPC1 were deficient at predicting the percentage of finer material for both primary and secondary fragmentation.The wide range in fragmentation distributions observed in the measured results, and the discrepancy between modelled and measured fines should be considered in the design of mine (material flow, extraction level geometry and draw rate), material handling (crushing and material movement), and downstream milling (comminution and metal recovery) processes for future block cave mines at the Cadia Valley Operations (CVO). With respect to fragmentation distribution range, a sensitivity analysis should be undertaken for these design considerations, with a range in predicted fragmentation distributions investigated (for example, lower quartile, mean and upper quartile). For future mines with similar geotechnical and mining conditions, the calibration of fines should be considered in any fragmentation distribution prediction to match those measured previously.CITATION:Brunton, I, Lett, J L and Thornhill, T, 2016. The Australian glass sand industry produces some 2.8 million tonnes per annum of silica sand, of which about 2.0 million tonnes are exported and the rest is for the domestic market. Approximate production rates for each Australian state are listed. The variety of processing methods used in the currently exploited deposits reflects the size, location, and characteristics of the various deposits and the requirement of the end market/s. The industry uses to a large extent equipment developed for the separation of mineral sands, particularly as it applies to low grade heavy mineral deposits, where low cost, high capacity and metallurgically efficient equipment has proved eminently suitable for the production of the low value glass sands. The requirements of the domestic market, as well as those of the present and potential export markets are discussed covering quality requirements, distribution channels and other factors critical to success.

KIeeman (1968) described practice in the Mount Hebbard dump concentrator, Broken Hill, N.S.W. The purpose of this note is to give data on flotation pulp chemistry in the plant for comparison with results of Woodcock and Jones (1970a, 1970b).Ten chemical parameters were measured at ten points in the circuit using the techniques of Woodcock and Jones (1970a, 1970b). Fig. 1 shows a condensed time plot of some continuous measurements in conditioner overflow and rougher feed. Fig. 2 shows average values of selected parameters at the start and end of each of the three rougher flotation stages.DISCUSSIONpH and redox potentiaIsFig. 1 shows that pH and Eh were relatively constant at the start of sulphide lead flotation. There was a fairly steady increase in pH throughout the circuit (Fig. 2), but flotation was always conducted in a slightly acid pulp in spite of the large amount of alkaline reagents added. Eh values became more positive as the pulp progressed through the circuit (Fig. 2) in accord with results elsewhere.

The increasing depth, mechanisation and distance of working areas from surface connections places an ever greater contaminant burden on ventilation airflows. Some British Coal mines are already experiencing significant problems in providing adequate climatic conditions in the working areas and have had to introduce air conditioning. Previous work has shown that in mines of low to moderate virgin strata temperature the application of controlled district recirculation could serve to improve climatic conditions at the working area.

The results of precious metal exploration carried out by Amoco Minerals New Zealand Limited over EL 33-137 in the Longwood Range, Southland, are described. Widespread gold and platinum in alluvial deposits on the perimeter of the range and anomalous gold in stream sediments on its southern and south western flanks indicates that the precious metals were probably derived from erosion of the mafic rocks of the Longwood Complex.

The Australian mining industry is a significant contributor to the nation’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and like any industry, it must make efforts to reduce these. Medium- and long-term strategies will include the replacement of diesel engines with alternative energy sources, but what can be done in the short-term to reduce diesel consumption and hence CO2 emissions? Haul trucks are identified as the major contributors of CO2 emissions in the mining fleet and this paper focuses on firstly identifying what drives haul truck emissions and secondly, discussing what is the role of the Fleet Management System (FMS) in reducing these. A key enabler of this is having a robust fuel consumption model within the FMS, and I describe how this may be done. Besides novel approaches to incorporating fuel consumption (CO2) management into truck assignment algorithms, this paper also describes how the FMS can be used to implement and manage procedures and policies to reduce haul truck emissions.
