Conclusion...................467 Introduction The principal object of this paper is 60 presest, data on the development of the revolving convex round table as a concentrator for the through 0.07-mm. slimes from the ores of the Butte district, although some brief notes on the earliest recorded use of this type of concentrating table in the ore-dressing plants of the Lake Superior region and of the Butte district are also presented. The revolving convex round table belongs to the class of concentrating tables known as film-sizing. tables, these tables using the relative transporting power of a film, or thin sheet of water, as it flows over a quiet inclined surface, to separate the minerals of a sorted product. BINGHAM has produced 6 per cent. of this country's copper. In total production, it ranks fourth among the copper camps of North America, the order being Butte, Michigan, Bisbee, and Bingham. In its annual production, it held that same rank until 1919, when its production was exceeded by the combined production of the Globe-Miami district of Arizona. Bingham has also been a lead camp of the first order. Utah ranks third among the lead-producing states, and its production comes largely from three camps which, in the order of their productivity, are: Bingham, Tintic, Park City. Bingham's silver production is important, but it does not rank high as a silver producer. Utah owes its rank as first among the silver-producing states to Tintic, a camp 40 miles due south of Bingham. The United States Mineral Resources reports a total production from Bingham for the period 1865-1920 having a gross value of $528,043,432. Bingham is on the eastern flank of the Oquirrh range 30 miles south-west of Salt Lake City, from which it can be reached in an hour by auto, or by the Denver & Rio Grande or the Bingham & Garfield railroads.. The automobile route is a paved road across the floor of Great Salt Lake Valley, through farming country. The Bingham & Garfield railway leaves the level of Great Salt Lake at the northern end of the Oquirrh range, and in 20 miles it climbs 2100 ft., and deposits the traveler upon a shelf cut in the side of Bingham Canyon below most of the mines, which are farther up Bingham Canyon and its tributary Carr Fork. Below lies the town, a narrow ribbon running for a couple of miles along the bottom of a canyon 2000 ft. deep-an almost impossible site for a community numbering, in prosperous times, 5000 to 7000 inhabitants drawn from all quarters of the globe. Up the canyon and down, and beneath the steep slopes nearby, and beneath the town itself, are the mining operations of over half a century.

ALTHOUGH it was known some years ago at the- Utah Copper Co. mills that fine grinding improved flotation recoveries, no accurate data were available until recently as to just how far the grinding could be carried economically. In 1923 the ultimate degree of fineness for flotation feed was supposed to be about 10 per cent. on 65 mesh, with approximately 55 per cent. through 200 mesh, which meant that most of the mineral would pass 100 mesh. At this time Garfield and Wilfley tables were used ahead of flotation and a good deal of the coarse mineral removed prior to the ball mill regrind. Shortly afterwards, mill-scale tests developed the fact that on a feed containing not over 10 per cent. +65¬mesh material flotation alone would give a copper recovery equal to that obtained by the combination of tables and flotation, but that on much coarser feed the recovery with flotation alone was lowered. This was at a time when all the sulfide minerals were floated if possible, so that the only requisite was to grind fine enough to free the mineral from gangue. EARLIEST USE op MICROSCOPIC EXAMINATION OF TAILINGS As early as 1921, the writer had attempted to determine by chemical analysis the relative proportions of copper minerals in tailings from an ore that made extremely poor flotation results. Chemical analysis was not satisfactory or conclusive, and samples of these tailings were sent to the U. S. Bureau of Mines Station at the University of Utah for micro-scopic examination. The question at that time was to determine, if possible, which copper minerals had been lost and why, but R. E. Head, in his report, revealed other interesting data. He said in part: Briefly stated, the mineral particles or grains may be classified into separate groups as follows: 1. Free grains of pyrite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite, respectively, which contain no other included sulfides; 2. Grains in which all three of the copper sulfides are represented (the core may he of chalcopyrite, partially altered to bornite, these two minerals being entirely surrounded by a shell of chalcocite); 3. Grains composed of equal amounts of bornite and chalcocite or chalcopyrite and chalcocite.

AT the New York meeting of the American Institute of Mining-and Metallurgical Engineers held in February, 1926, W. H. Bassett and J. C. Bradley presented a paper entitled "Exudations on Copper Castings."§ The purpose of the present paper, as the title suggests, is to call attention to somewhat similar phenomena which the authors have encountered in brass and bronze. From a study of the examples given, a more-or-less speculative theory of "inverse segregation" is advanced. PROTUBERANCES ON ADMIRALTY BRASS In the rolling mill of the Scovill Manufacturing Co., there have been found quite commonly bars of certain alloys which had a sort of shaggy roughness on the surface due to slight metallic protuberances. No special attention was paid to these until some bars were found on which these protuberances were heavy enough at the bottom of the bars to produce a blistered appearance. A sample of the protuberances was milled off the surface of the bar illustrated (Fig.. 1a) and upon analysis was found to contain 66.66 percent. copper, 4.02 per cent. tin and .03 . per cent. lead, whereas the average composition of the bar was 70.21 per cent. copper, 1.21 per cent. tin, and .01 per cent. lead. A sample of the shaggy-rough protuberances at the -very top of a bar was also analyzed and was found to contain 2.45 per cent. tin, indicating that it was probably of the same origin as the blistered areas. These results were not entirely unexpected for previous analyses of this alloy had -revealed that the surface was richer in tin than the rest of the bar. This, of course, is contrary to what we would expect from a consideration of the equilibrium diagram and has been called "inverse segregation."

Alfred Stansfield, Montreal, Canada:—In Professor Howe's paper on the position of Ae3, he shows its industrial importance in determining the temperature to which steel should be heated for " grain refining." Several years ago I carried out a research on the " burning " of steel and found that while hypo-eutectoid steel should be heated to Ae3, hyper-eutectoid steel that has been very much overheated must be reheated to the curve Sa on the carbon-iron diagram, in order to redissolve the pro-eutectoid cementite and thus to obtain recrystallization and grain-refining. This treatment was necessarily only partly successful, and I should like to ask whether the conditions of heat treatment for refining overheated high-carbon steels have been ascertained. Speaking of the &'Persistence of Solidificational Segregation " Professor Howe quotes an experiment made by Mr. Stead in which a bar of 1.2 per cent. carbon steel was immersed in a large mass of molten blast-furnace slag and allowed to cool with it. The steel was heated ; above the solidus (curve An on the carbon-iron diagram), but below the liquidus (curve AB). A drop of eutectic carbon-iron alloy, rich in carbon, had liquated out and hung below the bar. This agrees exactly with my own observations on the burning of steel, but my interpretation differs somewhat from that of Professor Howe. Professor Howe considers that the fusion of a part of the metal (rich in carbon) shows that the solidificational irregularities of composition had persisted through the rolling and heat treatment of the steel, as otherwise no part of the steel would have been sufficiently fusible to melt. It does not appear to me that such an explanation is necessary. A piece of steel represented in temperature and composition by any point within the area ABa will ultimately resolve itself into a solid phase and a liquid phase in equilibrium with each other. It may appear that if the steel were absolutely uniform no fusion could take place, but, the smallest nucleus of high-carbon, fusible alloy would ultimately bring about this separation into liquid and solid phases, by diffusion of the carbon from the solid to the liquid areas. A nucleus sufficient for the purpose might be provided by an area of pro-eutectoid cementite which had not become diffused during the

The Duval Corp. porphyry copper deposits at Copper Canyon and Copper Basin, though widely separated, form an econornic unit requiring integrated exploitation. Contrasts in mineralization, host rocks, and mode of occurrence present unique mining and milling problems. Mixed oxide-sulfide ore is treated in extensive dump leaching facilities in both areas. Complex Cu-Au-Ag ore is treated in a 4000-tpd mill at Copper Canyon. In both areas, hypogene metallization occurs within large aureoles of metamoiphism and hydrothennal alteration related to quartz monzonite intrusions of mid-Tertiary age. Supergene processes fitrther altered the rocks and enriched the hypogene protore. At Copper Canyon, hypogene copper and iron sulfides with gold and silver occur in fractures, as partial replacement of favorable beds, and as disseminations in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The lower part of the Pennsylvanian Battle formation was a particularly favorable host. Metallization occurs to a lesser extent in quartz monzonite. Metal zoning is well-developed. The deposits at Copper Basin consist principally of supergene copper minerals in arenites of the Cambrian Harmony formation. Oxidation of hypogene copper and iron sulfides in tactite zones has formed at least two commercial deposits; intersections of fractures with favorable beds exerted important ore controls. Recently, the Copper Canyon and Copper Basin properties of Duval Corp. have been added to the list of porphyry copper mines in Nevada, marking the first new copper open pit in this state in 15 years. COPPER-CALCIUM alloys are of interest as materials for use in deoxidized conductors of high conductivity. That calcium is effective in deoxidizing and degasifying copper is well known. Brandenberg and Wiens1 have described the use of calcium in the casting of sound copper and state that the deoxidation can be carried out without difficulty. The castings that they prepared were sound and sufficiently ductile to permit wire drawing. Pratt,2 in British Patent No. 1699 (1907), has claimed the use of calcium for the deoxidation and degasification of copper. Masing3

Much of the ground to be covered by this paper was ably covered by a paper presented by Messrs. Morrow and Jordan1 before a joint meeting of the Iron and Steel Section of the Engineers Society of West-ern Pennsylvania and the A.I.M.E. Pitts-burgh Section at Pittsburgh in the spring of 1940. As that paper was not published, the present authors have availed them-selves of Mr. Morrow's kind permission to use information given therein. Similar figures for the latest years available have been added to many statistics originally presented. It is unfortunate that Mr. Jordan's death removes his stimulating guidance and help, which the authors would have welcomed and have found invaluable in the past. One interested in the Pittsburgh seam should not fail to read the exhaustive and authoritative paper by Eavenson2 presented in 1938. As Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties contain practically all the reserves and furnish nearly all of the production from the Pittsburgh seam in Pennsylvania at the present time, this area only is intended when reference is made to the Pittsburgh seam in Pennsylvania. On much of the seam in Greene and Washington Counties, which contain a large proportion of the total reserves, insufficient data are available to determine the detailed characteristics of the seam with any degree of finality. It is hoped that the data presented here will fairly well indicate the probable characteristics. Economic Importance of the Pittsburgh Seam The Pittsburgh seam in Pennsylvania is of primary importance as a coal resource, not only because of its substantial reserves but because it contributes such a large proportion of the coal used in the country and an even larger proportion of that used in the manufacture of coke. Mr. Ashley3 placed the estimated recoverable reserves (1935) of the Pittsburgh coal bed in Pennsylvania at 7,500,000,000 tons.* Although a considerable portion of this tonnage is not now suitable for coking coal, because of its high sulphur content, undoubtedly the supply of coking coal will last for many years and that not suitable for coking will furnish industry with an ample supply of energy. In attempting to assess the contribution of the Pittsburgh seam to total coal production and to that of coal used in making coke, one finds that the statistics published annually by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, Minerals Yearbook, do not give tonnages classified as to seams but only as to districts or states and counties. However, it happens that, at present and during much of the

$1. Introduction.—Any given piece of metal is made up of a very great number of grains, usually microscopic, each of which is a perfect crystal save only in outward form, with cleavage planes of low cohesion, geometrically arranged quite as in fie familiar non-metallic crystals. The plastic deformation of such a mass occurs chiefly through the slipping of the crystalline blocks of which each grain is composed along these cleavage planes, causing steps called slip bands to form on a previously polished surface. In this slip, the metal immediately adjoining each of the cleavage planes along which the slip takes place is thought to pass extremely rapidly through a very mobile state into the amorphous state, in which it is harder than the remaining still crystalline metal between the amorphous layers thus formed along the slip planes. Whether the slip planes below the surface in ferrite can be detected by cutting, polishing, and etching sections is in dispute; but if this detection is possible at all, it is usually made impossible by heating the metal even gently. In short, the change along the slip planes does not persist through heating, and it is thought not to persist through time even at the room temperature, nearly all the amorphous metal recrystallizing. The network in Fig. 22 and the parallel N.-70-E. lines in Fig. 21 are slip bands in copper. When plastically deformed metal is heated, certain parts of certain grains may twin, that is, their component crystalline units may rotate into a position, or more exactly into an orientation, symmetrical with the initial orientation and hence with that of the remainder of that grain. As seen in a microsection of a metal the twinned areas usually have parallel sides. The existence of twinning is recognized in metallic sections either by the presence of such parallel-sided areas differing in brightness from the adjoining metal, especially when seen under oblique light after etching, or more surely by the zigzagging of the slip bands which form when twinned metal is itself deformed again. Hence the usual procedure in developing twins is to deform plastically so as to cause the twinning tendency; to heat so as to allow the tendency to assert

For nearly a century, the Corocoro deposit has been renowned among geologists from the fact that it shares with the Lake Superior deposits of the United States the distinction of being the only important copper districts where native copper is worked commercially. The Corocoro district, named after the city of Corocoro, the capital of the Province of Pacajes (Department of La Pas, Bolivia) is situated towards the western edge of the Bolivian high plateau, at an altitude of a little over 13,000 ft. The most interesting part of the district is that immediately surrounding the city of Corocoro, at a distance, by railway, of 65 miles from La Paz and 210 miles to the Chilean port of Arica on the Pacific Coast. The climate of the region is that of the semi-desert, dry and relatively cold, with big differences of temperature between day and night. The rainy season begins in December and ends in March. The cupriferous lodes of Corocoro have not attracted as much interest as the silver mines of Potosi but they have been known for a long time. In the precolonial period the Indians were using the charquis, or natural native copper sheets, to make small brass objects, and the beautiful pale green brochantite of the outcrops as a source of green pigments. During the colonial period, the oxidized ores of the outcrops were worked for copper, which was used by the mint at Potosi for making currency. The native copper ores were neglected because the Spanish miners were at a loss how to concentrate and smelt them. About 1830, work by rudimentary processes, which were improved little by little, was begun on the native copper ores. The total production of native copper in the following hundred years amounted to 100,000 tons. This native copper, which was remarkably pure, was much appreciated on the European markets before the introduction of electrolytic copper. It was useful for making special ornamental brass or bronze and the granular concentrates of native copper, called barrilla, containing 80 to 85 per cent copper were suitable for making copper sulfate by direct oxidation and subsequent leaching with sulfuric acid.

THE degree to which our mineral requirements are being met by mining leaner, more complex or more remote deposits is indicated by developments during 1953. Heavy capital investment, skilled technical advice, planning, and able execution are requirements for the typical venture. Producers, faced with rising costs and with softer prices, are seeking improved mining and recovery. Developments in production of iron ore are typical of the course being followed in metal and nonmetal mining. Iron ore development in the U. S. is concentrated on the spectacular work with Lake Superior taconite, while in Canada new production is expected from Labrador and output from Steep Rock, Algoma, and Newfoundland is being increased. Shipment of iron will soon be made from Venezuela.

ALTHOUGH the mechanical cleaning of coal is carried out at plants on the surface, preparation is actually begun at the face in the mine. Here the character of the coal and the amount, character, and distribution of the impurities within the bed may be seen. Blasting methods, dust-allaying procedures, location of mining cut with respect to bands of impurity, and the practice of discarding segregated impurities underground, all have an important bearing on the successful operation of surface cleaning units. The most important single characteristic of both coal and its asso¬ciated impurities from the standpoint of cleaning is specific gravity. Other characteristics related in one way or another to the preparation of coal are rank, petrographic composition, structure and hardness, and friability. These and still other coal properties are discussed in the first section of this chapter and impurity characteristics in the second. COAL CHARACTERISTICS RELATED TO PREPARATION Rank As a result of work done over a period of several years by committees of the American Society for Testing Materials and the American Standards Association, standard specifications are now available showing the classification of coals according to rank and quality of grade.' The term "rank" expresses the degree to which the original coal-forming material has been changed by metamorphism through successive stages from peat to anthracite. THe conditions that make necessary the mechanical ventilation of the Butte mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Go. are due to a number of causes, all of which are incidental to the depth at which mining operations are now carried on, The main object to be accomplished, of course, is the reduction of the temperature and humidity of the air in the working places. Ventilation fans, both surface and underground, have been used for many years, but increasing depth has made the problem much more difficult. Further improvement in both ventilation equipment and methods, therefore, became necessary; and it is the purpose of this paper to describe the work planned and done under the improvement program. The mines of the district have been frequently described in various technical publications, so a description is unnecessary here. From a mine-ventilation viewpoint, compared with coal-mine ventilation systems, the problem is complicated by the fact that the workings to be ventilated are situated on a large number of steeply dipping veins which frequently intersect and are faulted, and also by the fact that the extent, or existence, of orebodies is not definitely known in advance of actual development work. For these reasons ventilation work cannot be planned in advance of actual operations, nor can such regular systems of ventilation as are used in working the more uniform and continuous bodies of coal be developed. When operations are conducted at a normal rate, about 10,000 miners are employed on two shifts, so that about 5000 men will be underground at one time. But as ventilation is necessary to reduce high temperature and humidity due, mainly, to natural causes, the quantity of air per man per minute is not a governing consideration in determining ventilation requirements. Most important among the numerous sources of heat and humidity in the mines are: heat generated during decay of mine timber; heat and humidity given off by mine rock and water; heat generated by oxidation of sulfide minerals; heat given off by electrical equipment; heat generated by mine fires (in certain localities).

Having been appointed, on February 19th, 1890, a member of the Commission created by the Legislature of Pennsylvania for the purpose of investigating the " Waste of Coal Mining, with the View to the Utilizing of the Waste" (waste in this case referring specially to the small sizes of anthracite heretofore thrown away), my attention was naturally directed to the mash economical method of burning these small sizes.* Although I had been Familiar with the burning of anthracite for • many years, I found when I came to study the matter carefully that I was far from thoroughly understanding it, particularly with reference to the hurning of the smaller sizes, and that the literature of the subject, which was not very extensive, had more of a tendency to confuse than to enlighten me. I began therefore to investigate the subject so as to arrive if possible at some definite principles applicable to the question. With the aid of my assistant, Mr. John R. Wagner, I began at Drifton a series of experiments upon the burning of small anthracites. We first erected a small furnace with a grate 3 feet long and 2 feet wide, with which we experimented about two months. From the information thus acquired, we designed and built another furnace of about the same size, which gave us facilities for extending our investigations still further. After experimenting several months with the second furnace, we built a third one, which was much larger, having a grate area of about 68 square feet, which was exactly the size of the grate used in the boiler-plants of' Coxe Bros. &

THE strength of hard drawn copper wire is a question of considerable importance to both manufacturer and consumer. Unlike steel and alloy wires, in which strength is governed by both chemical and physical considerations, the high conductivity required for copper wire in the electrical industry generally precludes the possibility of obtaining tensile strength through the use of alloys. Consequently, this strength is largely a matter of the physical structure, and all factors known to affect this structure, such as rolling temperature, die contours, lubricants, drawing speeds, etc., are matters of prime importance. The experiments described here have been carried out during the past year at the Baltimore plant of the American Smelting & Refining Co., in connection with a general investigation of some of the questions mentioned above, with the object of studying the physical structure of hard drawn copper wire and the influence of certain factors on that structure. The work has been of an exploratory nature, rather than comprehensive, but it was thought that the results might prove of sufficient general interest to warrant their publication. The bulk of the hard drawn copper wire used in places where strength is an important factor is manufactured to strict specification, based usually in the United States on that of the American Society for Testing Materials (B-1-23). This specification calls for almost as high a value of tensile strength, consistent with elongation, as it is possible practically to obtain, and only physically perfect material can be relied on to meet such a specification. Obvious defects, such as laminations produced through fins in the original rods or brittleness due to overdrawing, are usually recognized and need only passing reference. Laminations can be detected by twisting and untwisting the wire several times; they will show up on the surface in the form of fins. Fig. 1 shows a very bad example of this defect. The wire may be perfectly smooth before twisting but when such laminations are present they will readily show up under this treatment. This trouble is caused by similar defects in the original rod produced by overfills in rolling. Fig. 2 shows the cross-section of the rod from which the wire in Fig. 1 was drawn.

Most important among the numerous sources of heat and humidity in the mines are: heat generated during decay of mine timber; heat and humidity given off by mine rock and water; heat generated by oxidation of sulfide minerals; heat given off by electrical equipment; heat generated by mine fires (in certain localities).

FAILURES in railroad rails have been of vital concern to engineers; railroad executives, rail manufacturers and the general public for years. Failures from transverse fissures originating from internal nuclei have received particular attention in the past 20 years. Dr. J. E. Howard first reported this type of failure in 1911, as being responsible for a wreck-on the Lehigh Valley R. R. in which several lives were lost. Since then many transverse fissures have been found. In 1919, Waring and Hofammann1 etched longitudinal sections of rails in hot acid and found cracks extending both longitudinally and transversely in certain used rails as well as in some new rails.. Since then it has been thought by many that these "shatter" cracks are the nuclei from which transverse fissures subsequently develop in service. Methods for reducing the rate of cooling rails on the hot. bed have been devised to decrease the temperature gradient and consequently the stress gradient in the rails. A study of the tensile properties of rails at elevated temperatures was made by Freeman and Quick,2 who investigated the properties at temperatures through which rails pass on the cooling bed after leaving the hot saw. In their investigation a special study was made of the ductility of the steels in the temperature range 400° to 700° C. In this temperature range it was found that certain rail and other steels showed a marked decrease in elongation and reduction of area. The phenomenon was called "secondary brittleness" and the temperature range the "secondary brittle range." A tentative explanation was presented that internal failure such as "shatter cracks" and "hair cracks" in rails are the result of thermal stresses developed in the steel structure while cooling through the secondary brittle range. The investigation showed that the magnitude of the phenomenon varies for different heats, but that it did not differ for specimens from different ingots or for different rails in a particular ingot. Potassium-argon dating of the late Mesozoic and Cenozoic intermediate to acidic plutons and volcanic rocks of Arizona and northern Sonora demonstrates the existence of two distinct magmatic episodes. The earlier episode begins in late Campanian time and dies out before the middle Eocene. Following a quiescent period in middle and late Eocene time, magmatism increases in Oligocene time, becomes most intense at the Oligocene-Miocene boundary and dies out as the Pliocene is approached. Pliocene magmatism is primarily confined to extrusion of post-orogenic basalts. The late Mesozoic-early Cenozoic magmatic pulse is essentially confined within the limits of the classical Laramide orogeny (Laramie through Wasatch time). The mid-Tertiary pulse is contemporaneous with the mid-Tertiary Basin and Range orogeny. The Laramide provides an excellent specific example of Umbgrove's concept of the pulse of the earth and in general his concept appears to be meaningful. Copper porphyry mineralization is time-congruent with Laramide magmatism and there seems to be no doubt as to the existence of a genetic relationship between the two phenomena. Two origins are tenable: direct accumulation of the copper sulfides in the copper porphyry liquid magmatic environment; or, introduction of the mineral constituents entirely from a larger source magma when the host rock is already crystalline. Transgression and regression of the epicontinental seas provide an excellent indicator of orogeny and epeirogeny. There was an overall transgression of the epicontinental seas from early Triassic time through the Turonian epoch in early late-Cretaceous time. Thereafter, there is a relatively continuous regression of the seas until the present time. Both the earlier transgressive episode and the later retreat are intermpted by temporary but distinct reversals. These interruptions can be correlated with classical orogenies. There are six distinct orogenies so indicated in the Mesozoic-Cenozoic eras. These occur at approximately 35 to 40 m.y. intervals. The regression of the epicontinental seas following the Turonian epoch was contemporaneous with the deepening of the Pacific ocean basin over the Darwin Rise. As the Darwin Rise was collapsing the East Pacific Rise was being elevated. The Western United States, situated on the eastern flank of the East Pacific Rise, was upwarped and tilted toward the east. Epeirogeny is the primary consequence of processes that operate on a global scale. Orogeny is an exothennic process that is limited in space and is treated here as a secondary consequence of epeirogenic-initiated warping. The off-campus buildings of the University of Arizona Geochronology Laboratories rest on the volcanic rocks of Tumamoc Hill. From this hill, the observer may obtain a beautiful view of typical Basin and Range topography. The city of Tucson lies below, contained within the broad Santa Cruz basin and surrounded on all sides by characteristic NW-SE trending ranges towering as much as 7000 ft above the valley floor. Since the senior author arrived in Tucson eight years ago, a great deal more has been learned about the geochronology of this and neighboring basins and ranges. For example, the volcanic rocks underlying the laboratory at Tumamoc Hill were shown on the state geologic map as Quaternary basalt. A student of the senior author has demonstrated that the so-called basalts are in fact alkali-andesites (Halva, 1961), and we now know that these alkali-andesites or doreites (Mielke, 1965) are of early Miocene age rather than Quaternary age (Bikerman and Damon, 1965). Is it any wonder then that geologists disagree on the nature and time of Basin and Range volcanism, plutonism and tec-tonism? The plain fact is that few definitive Cenozoic fossil sites were available upon which to base a chronology and geologists were forced to guess the ages of rocks in order to achieve the semblance of a time classification. We have now made considerable progress in developing a K-Ar chronology for the volcanic and plutonic rocks of the Basin and Range (Bikerman, 1965; Damon and Bikerman, 1965; Damon et al, 1964 and 1965; Mauger et al, 1965). It is the purpose of this paper to point out the main features of this chronology and to discuss the relationship of magma-tism to orogeny-epeirogeny during post-Turonian time. MetallURgical research has discovered many an alloy possessing properties not combined in any single metal, and progress still consists chiefly in the investigation and utilization of alloys. In the case of iron, the demands of automobiles, high-speed machines and high-duty engines have led to the production of special iron alloys which will meet any reasonable specifications in that field. In like manner, the bronzes, brasses and other alloys of copper have been brought to remarkable perfection, and for nearly every industrial purpose some alloy has been , found more suitable than the pure metal. Less complete success has attended the attempt to find substitutes for gold, platinum, and the other precious metals. Indeed, it is not likeiy that a material can be produced which, will possess all the properties of any one of them; yet it is reasonable to hope that, for any given use, the properties required may be found in some less expensive material. Thus, in incandescent electric lamps, the wire passing through the thick glass neck of the bulb was, until recently, almost universally made of platinum, for the single reason that no other known material, suitable as a conductor, had the same coefficient of expansion as glass. But a comparatively recent investigation of the iron-nickel series1 has shown that alloys of those metals maybe produced, the coefficient of expansion of which can be accurately controlled between that of iron or nickel and zero. Thus, in that particular industry, a substitute for platinum has been found. According to statistical reports, not only considerable quantities of gold and iridium, but also more than one-third of the annual supply of platinum, are used (and, in the nature of the case, irrevocably lost) by dentists. Platinum is thus employed in several forms. As a thin foil, it serves various purposes for which its high melting point, pliability, chemical resistance, and other properties—including the ease with which it may be soldered—are invaluable.
