IT as long been recognized that there is a need for accurate systematic data on diffusion in solids. Originally, such data were needed to check existing theories but, more recently, it would appear that it could be used most advantageously as a guide to, or a check for, much needed extensions of the theory of diffusion. The awareness of the conditions which are important to experimental accuracy, the availability of the materials for accurate experiments, and the techniques have improved to the extent that it would now seem to an experimentalist that, unless extensions of the theory are made which take into account the fundamental parameters of the atoms, the electrons, and the lattice in some detail, the field of diffusion will rapidly become an empirical or semi-empirical field. The present series of experiments was designed to provide accurate data on the diffusion of the elements of the IB and IIB subgroups in silver; that is, to provide data on the diffusion in silver of three face-centered-cubic elements with roughly similar chemical properties, but with different atomic or ionic sizes and, similarly, for three noncubic elements. The elements of these two subgroups have different valences, so that the data will not give any significant information on differences due to the crystal structure of the solute. The present paper reports data on the diffusion of copper and mercury in single crystals of silver; the data for the other elements of the IB and IIB subgroups were reported previously by the authors1'2 and by Tomizuka and Slifkin.8 Experiment The general technique used was identical to that previously described1,2 and will not be repeated here. In all cases, the sectioning technique and high specific activity isotopes" were used. The short half-life of Cu64 made decay corrections more important than for the other isotopes, and necessitated around the clock shifts while data were being taken. Each section was counted at least twice (as was true for all longer half-life isotopes) and a monitor was counted along with each sample. Data for the diffusion of mercury in silver are presented at a greater number of temperatures than for the other solutes. This is a result of two circumstances. First, six (of 30) samples had to be discarded because of pitting or recrystallization which occurred during the diffusion runs, even though the samples had sustained high temperature prediffusion anneals. Either of these was a very rare phenomenon in the other experiments, and their occurrence in this case is considered in more detail below. Second, the curves of the logarithm of the activity of the sections vs the square of the penetration deptht were, in general, quite good, but frequently seemed to show one point to have high activity and the next point to have slightly low activity in terms of the best straight line. When this occurred, there was remarkable regularity of the high-low sequence. In any event, the results, as far as diffusion coefficients are concerned, were not affected by this amalgam effect. In fact, the mercury data had the highest internal consistency of any of the data. Results Diffusion of Copper in Silver—-Diffusion runs were made at eight temperatures In the temperature range from 700° to 950°C, for times ranging from 5 to 45 hr. A linear curve of the logarithm or the activity vs the square of the penetration depth was obtained for all samples. The kinetics of precipitation deoxidation is considered from a theoretical point of view. The size distribution and the total content of deoxidation products are estimated statistically as a function of time, taking into account Stokes and gradient collisions between the particles and separation at the top surface of the bath. The assumption is made that two particles coalesce into one larger particle as a result of a collision. General expressions are derived and calculations are carried out numerically for the case of silica particles in liquid iron. The analysis predicts a three-stage behavior for the removal of oxygen, an incubation stage, a stage of rapid separation, and a slow final stage where the content approaches the equilibrium value. The agreement with experimentally determined size distributions and deoxidation times is considered to be good. A quantitative estimation of such growth mechanisms as diffusion from the melt and redistribution of oxygen from small particles to large ones shows that these latter mechanisms cannot explain the experimentally observed gvowth of inclusions. This also indicates that collisions provide the important growth mechanism. OXIDE inclusions precipitate when a deoxidizer like silicon or aluminum is added to a steel bath. The inclusions grow and the large particles tend to separate from the bath. For each type of oxide the growth determines the sizes of the final inclusions as well as the total inclusion content of the steel. The mechanism of growth is controversial, however. It has been suggested that an inclusion grows principally by diffusion of atoms through the melt to the inclusion particle or principally by collisions and coalescence with other inclusions. Diffusion growth is always present to some extent but recent experiments and calculations by Torssell,' Kniippel et 'a1.,2 Sano et al. and Miya-shita4 indicate that collisions may be more important than previously realized. A detailed analysis has so far been lacking. The present paper is a quantitative, statistical analysis of the growth and separation of inclusions and is based on a collision theory. Nuclea-tion is not considered. The numerical estimates are based on the experimental conditions of Torssell's' investigation and comparisons are made with his observations. Torssell' studied the growth and separation of silica particles in liquid iron. Samples were taken from a 0.6 kg iron bath at various times after the addition of silicon. By a particle-counting technique developed by Bergh and Lindber~the size distribution of the inclu- sions was determined. The number of particles at the first sampling, 10 sec after silicon addition, was of the order of 3 x lo7 to 10' per cu cm, the largest particles having a radius of 2 to 4 pm. The volume fraction was 0.001 to 0.004; i.e., the dispersion was very dilute. During subsequent holding the largest particles increased their radius by a factor of 10 after about a minute, and the whole size distribution was displaced toward larger values. These results were obtained with allowance for precipitation of the equilibrium concentration of oxygen during solidification. The bath contained less than 0.01 pct of C. Figs. 1 and 2 show the typical appearance of the inclusions. Most particles are very closely spherical and appear to have been liquid or semiliquid in the melt. The observed number of inclusions, about 5x 10' per cu cm, is of the same order of magnitude as found by ~er~h.' This is a large value. It follows that the diffusion distances are very short and that the precipitation

A beat-conduction model has been developed to study the flow of fluids in a stratified oil reservoir which is being subjected to unsteady-state depletion. To simulate stratification, plates of different metals were joined together so that cross flow could occur between strata. A description of the model, plate construction and necessary instruments is included. The data indicate that stratified oil reservoirs experiencing cross flow may be treated as a single, homogeneous, producing sand having properties intermediate between those of the layers making up the system. A technique for averaging core-analysis data to arrive at the proper average value of rock permeability and porosity is presented INTRODUCTION Although oil has been produced from reservoirs for 100 years and reservoir injection processes have been undertaken for 40 years, the industry is still inadequately informed on the problem of reservoir inhomogeneities. Stratification is perhaps the best-known type of reservoir heterogeneity. Urenl discussed the possible significance of this nonuniformity in his 1927 paper on the theoretical aspects of water flooding. Since this time the problem of vertical permeability variations has been the subject of much discussion and numerous papers. Levorsen2 simply describes the origin of layered beds in his Geology of Petroleum. Some beds are field-wide and may be traced from well to well, while others apparently pinch-out and become discontinuous. In addition, the physical characteristics of a layer may vary from place to place. For these reasons, a stratified system is not easily defined. In calculations involving oil reservoirs in which permeabi1ities vary, methods presently used contain many simplifying assumptions. The reservoir frequently is considered as consisting of permeable layers, each of uniform vertical and lateral permeability and each behaving as if separated from adjacent layers by thin impermeable layers. Other assumptions frequently made in reservoir calculations are steady-state flow conditions, unit mobility ratio, linear geometry, average or homogeneous porosity, and negligible capillary-pressure and gravity effects. Muskat3 has. developed solutions to the stratification problem for mobility ratios other than unity for both linear and exponential permeability distributions. He assumes lateral uniformity and continuity of all productive strata and does not consider porosity. This study will take into account transient effects, cross flow and varying porosity, as well as the variations in permeability, by means of a heat analogy. Muskat5 has shown the similarity of the equations which describe the flow of fluids in a porous medium to the flow of heat through a solid. Landrum, et al,6 made an analogy between the flow of fluid in an unsymmetrical reservoir and the conduction of heat in a similarly shaped metal plate. This analogy is summarized briefly as follows. If fluid is produced from an oil reservoir above the bubble point, the resulting pressure distribution will be identical to the temperature which would result in a metal or heat-conducting plate if heat were similarly removed. This means that a study of heat flow in stratified thermal models will behave like fluid flow in stratified oil reservoirs. For mathematical correspondencies, set- Ref. 6. The fluid mobility k/p is proportional to the thermal conductivity, and the porosity-times-compressibility product is proportional to the density times specific heat of the thermal plate. As described by means of quantitative pole figures, the annealing texture of highly rolled aluminum consists of the four retained components of the rolling texture near (123) [121], rather more sharply developed, and of a cube texture component. Local reorientation corresponds fairly well to 40 rotation around a [111] axis. In copper strip rolled 96 pct, the annealing texture is mainly the cube texture, with the four twin orientations as minor components. The annealing texture of highly rolled brass strip consists of four components of the (225) [734] type. REVIEWS by Wassermann,' Barrett,' Dunn,3 and Richards' give detailed accounts of the numerous publications dealing with annealing textures in rolled polycrystalline metals. Although a considerable amount of information of an empirical nature has been available for many years, even relatively recently the state of recrystallization-texture theory was considered uncertain. The reviews referred to above deal mainly with the description of experimental results, without developing generally applicable principles, suitable for explaining the observed annealing textures. The investigations of Burgers and Louwerse5 and Barrett6 showed that in deformed single crystals of aluminum the orientation of the recrystallized grains deviates drastically from that of the deformed matrix. According to Barrett and to Beck and Hu,7 the relationship between the two orientations can be best described as a rotation of about 40° around a [111] axis. Recent investigations led to similar orientation relationships for various face-centered cubic metals with a simple texture, regardless of whether the annealing process was recrystallization (strain-free grains growing in a highly deformed large crystal of aluminum' or copper: or in deformed cube texture copper") or coarsening (strain-free grains growing at the expense of an essentially strain-free, fine grained, polycrystalline matrix of single orientation texture copper,'" aluminum,' or nickel-iron). Barrett" pointed out the possibility that this orientation relationship may be a result of the orientation dependence of the rate of grain boundary migration. More recently, considerable evidence became available in favor of this view.12,13 In apparent contradiction to the above results, it has been known for a long time that the recrystallization texture of polycrystalline metals is often similar to the deformation texture. This was found, in particular, for the fiber textures obtained by wire drawing, compression, or compression rolling.' Following a suggestion by Barrett,2 Kronberg and Wilson and Beck and Hu7 described a mechanism by which a [Ill] fiber texture, resulting from plastic deformation, may be retained upon recrystallization, even though the orientation of individual recrystallized grains differs from that of the local area of the matrix in which they grow. This mechanism assumes that the reorientation corresponds to a rotation around the [1ll] axis, which is also the fiber axis. The present investigation was undertaken to examine in detail the orientation relationship between deformation texture and recrystallization texture in rolled face-centered cubic metals, using the quantitative methods of texture determination that have recently become available.", '" Quantitative pole figures for the rolling textures of such metals were reported recently." Quantitative pole figures for annealing textures are given in the present paper. It was planned to investigate whether or not the orientation relationship previously found for the recrystallization of deformed single crystals, and for coarsening of single-orientation texture material, is capable of accounting for the observed, often complex, annealing textures in rolled polycrystalline metals. Ruby crystals of exceptional optical quality have been grown from fluxes composed of Bi2O3 + PbF2 or Bi2O3 + BiF3. Careful control of growth conditions was required to minimize the number of growth defects consisting primarily of dislocations, occluded flux, and growth twins. Slow growth rates coupled with the addition of small amounts of La2O3 as a flux dopant were helpful in producing nearly perfect crystals. Chromium concentrations up to 1 pet were incorporated into these crystals without adversely affecting their perfection. Crystals up to 10 mm in diameter having as few as one to ten dislocations per crystal were typical of those produced under optimum growth conditions. Under these same conditions the occlusions were eliminated, and growth twins were either eliminated or reduced to one to three twin boundaries per crystal. INTEREST in the nature of lattice imperfections produced during the growth of ruby crystals (Al2O3-corundum structure) has been stimulated recently by the need for ruby lasers of good optical uniformity. As a result, ruby crystals grown by the flame-fusion (Verneuil) process have been studied in detail and have been found to contain high densities of dislocations (106 to 107 dislocations per sq cm) and mosaic structures that impair their optical quality.'-3 Attempts to improve the quality of Verneuil-grown crystals by controlling the growth variables have not been entirely successful. On the other hand, rubies grown by the flux process have received little attention even though their more nearly equilibrium growth conditions suggest that they would have fewer growth defects. Nelson and Remeika have shown recently that small flux-grown rubies can indeed be made into very low-loss lasers. However, they did not report information on crystalline imperfections in these crystals.4 Stephens and Alford have reported briefly on defects found in a flux-grown corundum crystal but they neither described these defects in detail nor related them to the method of growth.5 The present investigation was undertaken to establish the relationship between growth conditions and crystalline perfection of flux-grown rubies, sapphires, and other crystals of the corundum family. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The corundum crystals used in this study were grown by slowly cooling solutions of A12O3 in molten-salt solvents of PbO + PbF2, Bi2O3 + PbF2 or Bi2O3 + BiF3. The materials employed were Linde A (a Al2O3 powder) with reagent-grade chemicals as solvents. Some of the solutions also contained small additions (1 pet or less) of one or more of the transition metal elements chromium, manganese, iron, and titanium as crystal dopants. La2O3 was added to some of the solutions to alter the growth habit of the crystals. The La2O3 promoted the occurrence of growth facets parallel to (0112) and {1011} planes, where the indexing system is the morphological system described in detail by Kron-berg6 and used throughout this paper. The melts from which the crystals were grown were prepared by mechanically mixing the various constituents and placing them in platinum crucibles. The covered 50- and 100-ml platinum crucibles were heated in muffle furnaces at 1250°C for short periods of time (1 to 4 hr) and then program-cooled at either 2° or 4°C per hr to 1000°C. The effect of cathodically charging zone-refined iron with hydrogen and the resultant yield stress-grain size relationship has been investigated by tensile testing at -31°C. The resulting Petch plots (using a least-squares analysis) reveal a significant reduction in the slope and an increase in the intercept for specimens cathodically charged with hydrogen, regardless of whether the hydrogen is present during testing or is removed by evacuation. Other than surface blistering, the major effect of cathodically charging this material is to create occasional grain boundary cracks and thus presumably a large number of free dislocations at grain boundaries. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that the slope of the Petch plot is related to the stress required to activate dislocation sources at or near pain boundaries. While there is no significant effect of the presence of hydrogen on the lower yield stress of this material, the ductility is considerably reduced. After hydrogen removal by evacuation, the ductility recovers substantially and almost complete recovery of ductility is experienced by the smaller grain size specimens. THE influence of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of ferritic materials has received much attention throughout the history of the metallurgy profession. This interest has stemmed from the obvious importance of preventing the catastrophic failure of parts in service, and from the desire to determine what mechanism is responsible for the observed behavior. The various mechanisms proposed for hydrogen em-brittlement have been discussed in detail by Tetel-man,'who concludes that a combination of the applied stress and hydrogen pressure within voids best accounts for the many experimental observations reported. From a quite reasonable correlation of the strain aging and delayed-failure behavior of a variety of materials,2-7 Troiano and coworkers are of the opinion that the delayed-failure mechanism (slow strain rate embrittlement as well) is better explained as a lattice effect; solute elements diffuse to regions of high triaxial stress, form uncondensed atmospheres there, and effect a reduction in the cohesive strength of the lattice. Since hydrogen yield points8,9 have been observed in ferritic materials, and since the hydrogen embrittlement process may be related to strain aging, one further contribution to embrittlement could be hydrogen-dislocation interactions which make crack blunting by plastic deformation a more difficult process. The etch" relationship offers a means of comparing the relative ease of initiating and propagating plastic deformation in metals and alloys. In the present study, this relationship was used to compare the behavior of zone-refined iron in three conditions: uncharged, cathodically charged with hydrogen, and cathodically charged with hydrogen and evacuated. These Petch plots and the observed ductility parameters allowed a separation of the effects of the very presence of hydrogen and the act of cathodically charging hydrogen into this material. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE An ingot of zone-refined iron was obtained from Battelle Memorial Institute which contained the following (typical) interstitial impurities in ppm: carbon, 10 * 5; nitrogen, 1; oxygen, 22; hydrogen, 0.9. The ingot was cold-reduced to a 1/2-in.-sq cross section, recrystallized 1 hr at 575°C, and then straight-rolled to a thickness of about 0.105 in. This paper compares the room-temperature mechanical behavior of magnesium oxide crystals containing 'fresh' and 'grown in' sources. 'Fresh' dislocation sources introduced by cleavage or mechanical contact move and multiply to generate slip bands at 3000 psi. Macroscopically the crystals yield smoothly at 6000 psi and can be quite ductile. When 'fresh' sources are eliminated by chemical polishing the crystals have to rely on 'grown in' sources to initiate slip. They then deform elastically up to extremely high stresses (-30 to 50,000 psi) yielding with a sharp stress drop down to the level at which Ifresh' sources operate. Grown in' sources are considered to be associated with impurity wecipitate particles or inclusions. Annealing crystals at 2000°C dissolves these particles thereby eliminating sources for slip. The crystals then become consistently stronger (> 70,000 psi) approaching within 1/10 of the theoretical strength. Dislocations of the grown-in network do not move under stress to nucleate slip. It is proposed that they are locked electrostatically. DISLOCATIONS were originally conceived to resolve the large discrepency between the theoretical and real strength of solids. The idea that slip propagates by the movement of dislocations is now well confirmed both by electron transmission and etch pit studies. But this by itself is not sufficient to explain the low yield strength of crystals for there is still the need to understand where slip dislocations originally come from. Theoretical estimates place the stress to generate dislocations homogeneously in the lattice at approximately 1/30 of the shear modulus,' a value 104 to 105 times greater than the stress at which the very first manifestations of plastic deformation have been observed. Only an special cases can the theoretical strength be approached; in crystals of high perfection such as whiskers2 where dislocation sources do not preexist and in covalent crystals where the dislocations present at room temperature are almost completely immobilized by the bond character of the solid.3,4 For the most part it is necessary to assume that the yield strength of ionic and metallic solids corresponds to the motivation and multiplication of dislocation sources present beforehand. The question as to their origin appeared to be answered by the suggestion of Frank and Read5 that dislocations forming part of the grown-in structure could operate as a mill for the large scale production of dislocations. The Frank-Read mechanism is still widely accepted as the source of dislocations but a number of observations have been reported which are in serious disagreement with it. One of the most intriguing of these is that under normal testing conditions dislocations of the grown-in network appear to play no role in the plastic deformation of rock salt structure ionic solids. This was first reported in the etch pit studies on lithium fluoride by Gilman and Johnston6 and is true also for magnesium oxide. To explain the comparatively low yield stress of lithium fluoride it was proposed by a number of authors7,9 that small unresolved prismatic loops formed by vacancy condensation were acting either directly or indirectly as the dislocation sources. This proposal led Gilman10 to perform a series of detailed and careful experiments on lithium fluoride to try to identify the sources responsible for the initiation of slip. Crystal-structure occurrences in binary phase diagrams of fifth- and sixth-period elements, zirconium through palladium and hafniun through platinum, are surveyed with the conclusion that average .group number GN is the dominant correlative. This is interpreted in terms of curves of enthalpy differences between competitiue structures that are continuous func -tions of GN. It is further reasoned that the absolute formation energies may also be continuous functions of GN and if so can be simply obtained from the regatives of the heats of sublimation of the elements. It is shown that from such a heat of formation-GN plot the heats of mixing of alloy systems can be quantitatively predicted. For example, for sixth-period alloys very large exothermic heats of mixing are predicted for systems that span GN = 6 (i.e., Hf-Pt, Ta-Os, ...). Thermodynamic data with which to test these predictions do not appear to be available. If in the latter transition (A subgroup) elements we eliminate from consideration the fourth period where magnetic terms contribute to crystal-structure stability, as shown in Table I, there is a very regular sequence of structures. Using the group number (GN) assignments of Table I, which differ from the usual assignments of 8 to the elements listed as 8 through 10, it is perhaps trivial to say that the phase occurrence is a unique function of GN. However, the interesting aspect of alloys from among these elements is that the alloy structures also appear to correlate with GN. The GN for an alloy is given as GN = SixiGNi, where xi and GNi = atomic fraction and GN of component i, respectively. It is difficult to credit anyone in particular with having discovered this correlation, so many people have implicitly or explicitly employed it in the last 10 years. However, Bloom and Grant' in their correlation of s-phase occurrence with total number of d + s electrons were certainly one of the first to appreciate the correlation and Hume -Rothery2 appears to be responsible for the use of average GN as defined above. Only in the last few years have the phase diagrams of enough alloy systems been determined for this correlation to be surveyed with any degree of completeness. We shall here, in an abbreviated format, summarize the available phase-diagram literature and discuss some consequences of the GN correlation. BINARY DIAGRAM SURVEY In Figs. 1 to 3 the phase occurrences are summarized. In Fig. 4 the occurrence limits for the more common structures are summarized. That the GN of an alloy falls within the occurrence limits of a particular structure is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for the appearance of that structure. The preceding figures certainly illustrate that GN is a dominant correlative for structures of these elements. Many of the diagrams have complications, with ordering and other phase changes occurring in intermediate phases, that cannot be clearly accommodated in such a schematic survey and have hence been left out. Such omissions cannot, however, negate the GN correlations discussed here. Relative atomic size is also an important crystal-structure determinant and since atomic size varies quite regularly with GN for these elements it is possible that the apparent GN correlation is basically a size correlation. R. C. Gifkins (CSIRO)—In this paper evidence is put forward to support the idea of grain boundary shearing in aluminum at 4.2°K and the phenomenon is explained in terms of a low-temperature "equicohesive temperature". It is stated that these findings show that grain boundary shear cannot be ruled out in any situation by temperature arguments alone. We believe, from our own recent study of "apparent grain boundary sliding'' at temperatures below 0.45 Tm, that it can be ruled out on temperature arguments alone.45 Our experiments were made principally with magnesium and a Ms-A1 alloy ("Magnox A12"). Careful examination of offsets of marker lines or steps at grain boundaries produced by deformation at room temperature (-0.3 Tm) showed many of these to result from curvature over narrow zones along the grain boundaries. A significant residuum did, however, appear as a sharp offset or step. It was found that the mean value of this step rose to a small value during the first 0.5 to 1 pct strain and then remained at this level with further strain. Moreover, exactly the same values were obtained (at the same stress) at 75°C instead of 21°C. That is, in this range of temperature the "apparent sliding" was not temperature-sensitive. At 125°C and above there was sliding which increased with strain and which was temperature-dependent. When this temperature-dependent sliding was used to calculate the sliding to be expected at room temperature, this underestimated the "apparent sliding" by a factor of 104. The conclusion drawn is that the "apparent sliding" consists of shear localized in a zone of a width measured perhaps in microns, whereas it seems that true sliding occurs on the boundary surface.46 A model for such localized shear has been developed in general terms, following a similar model of Urie and Wain.47 Other strong evidence for low-temper- ature sliding has been based on the offsets of marker lines consisting of a substructure seen using the electron microscope to resolve these.48 We have repeated this work and found that the effects can be accounted for in terms of cracks in an oxide film which is produced when the substructure is etched up; these cracks form over zones of shear rather than at actual interfaces. However, in aluminum at room temperature (-0.3 Tm) there is no "apparent sliding" which is optically detectable. We suggest that, when the temperature is much lower (and possibly the rate of strain higher, too), as in the experiments of Chin et al., then aluminum behaves like magnesium at room temperature, and a narrow zone of shear develops to accommodate differences in strain across the grain boundary. Such a zone could well give rise to triple-point cracks. It is hoped to investigate these suggestions further. B. Y. Chin, W. F. Hosford, Jr., and W. A. Backofen (authors' reply)—It is interesting to have Dr. Gif-kin's comments, although it is somewhat difficult to reply in detail without the reference containing the work that he describes. Apparently though, he does find a low-temperature temperature-independent sliding that would seem to be related to the observations reported here. Perhaps some of the difficulty has semantic origins, growing out of the distinction between ('true sliding" and "apparent sliding".

THE strike and dip of bedded formations is readily determined by trigonometry if some marker horizon is intercepted by three holes. If no marker can be identified and if orientation of the cores is unknown, as is the usual case in diamond drilling, the determination still can be made readily by the use of a stereonet if the bearing, inclination, and angle the bedding makes with the core axis is known for each of the three holes. Such determination, valid only if the bedding orientation is fairly uniform within the area drilled, is considered simpler, faster, and more effective than any solution previously published. Method: The steps of this procedure are as follows: 1) Mark north and south poles on tracing paper placed over stereonet.* 2) Plot the three diamond drillholes by drawing a line from the center of the net in the direction of the bearings of the holes. Then rotate the paper until each line, in turn, lies along the equatorial diameter of the net; the end of each line is determined by the inclination of the hole measured in degrees from the periphery toward the center of the net along the equatorial diameter. Fig. 1 illustrates a vertical hole and a hole inclined at —23" due east. 3) With the projection of one diamond drillhole along the equatorial diameter, measure from the end of the hole, to the east and then to the west, a dis- tance in degrees equal to the core axis-bedding plane angle. Find two more points by measuring the same number of degrees north then south along the great circle from the end of the drillhole. Draw a circle, the center somewhere along the direction of the projection of the drillhole, to connect these four points. Draw circles for the other two diamond drillholes in the same manner. See Fig. 1 for two circles representing core axis-bedding plane angles of 35" and 23" and Fig. 2 for these plus a third circle representing a core axis-bedding angle of 42" in a hole bearing S 50 W inclined at —52". 4) Rotate the tracing paper until one great circle on the stereonet is found which is tangent to all three of the circles or parts of circles derived in the previous step. Trace this great circle on the paper and join its ends with a straight line passing through the center of the net. The bearing of this line is the strike of the bedding. In Fig. 2 the bedding strikes N 77 E. 5) Rotate the paper until the strike is along the polar diameter of the net. The dip of the bedding is determined by measuring along the equatorial diameter the distance in degrees from the periphery of the net to the great circle derived in step 4. The dip of plane illustrated in Fig. 2 is 55" to the N 13 W. Fig. 3 indicates the solution for three holes whose bearings and inclinations are N 20 W and —43o, due E and —30°, S 30 W and 23" with core axis-bedding angles of 30°, 50°, and 43" respectively. The bedding (stippled area) strikes N 44 W and dips 70" to the southwest.

Discussion of the paper of DORSET A. LYON and ROBERT M. KEENEY, presented at the Salt Lake meeting, August, 1914, and printed in Bulletin. No. 92, August, 1914, pp. 1791 to 1800. LAWRENCE ADDICKS, Chrome, N. J.-I read this paper for the first time this afternoon, and it is really worthy of a much more careful reply than I can make with such a short time to consider it, but I just want to say that I differ with Dr. Lyon in his premises and conception of what happens in a refining furnace. He cites steel as an instance where the production of special grades justifies the high cost of power in an electric furnace, and goes on to say the same will be true in the case of copper, for the reason that you will get a better quality of product. I don't think you will get a higher grade of copper,. or a better conductivity, as I will explain in a moment. The cost of fuel in the Eastern plants is somewhere between 30c. and 40c. per ton of copper refined, and, if my memory serves me correctly, in an open-hearth steel furnace it is something like $1.25, so it is evident that steel could be handled to better advantage than copper on the basis of fuel. Now, taking the Great Falls plant to compare with is not quite fair, because that plant operates under peculiar conditions. The furnaces are relatively small; the coal is very bad and is very high in sulphur. No one would think of using a coal with 3.6 per cent. sulphur were anything better available. Due to these conditions, the amount of slag is inordinate, it being quoted as 3.5 per cent., and it is necessary to use lime, as there is a tendency to have troubles from arsenic owing to the very high current density used. I think he has taken about as hard a case as he could pick out. Now as to the conductivity of copper, my own idea about the reason that melted copper does not give as high a conductivity as pieces drawn directly from a cathode, or native copper, is that in the latter case the impurities are present as a mechanical mixture, while after melting they are chemically combined with the copper, which is a very different condition. Further, it is necessary to take the sample from a relatively smooth and consequently pure part of the cathode, as otherwise it would not draw. The same with the mass of copper; you pick out a good solid part of the copper, which is not representative. In fact, the refiners have all found they could not take fair samples of cathodes for a chemical analysis. It is always customary to use wire-bar copper -for the purpose of sampling, and the impurities are several times as great as shown by samples taken from .the cathodes. I think if we examine all of the examples he has given of cases where copper is higher in conductivity, it will fit with that explanation. For example, the Elmore process is a direct electrolytic deposit. Incidentally, at the present time there are a number of ex-

THE activity of the principal oil fields of Rumania followed the same course as in 1939. It was marked by (1) collaboration between the various companies, particularly in exploiting oil at great depths with a view to rationalizing the exploitation and decreasing the difficulties inherent in very deep drilling; and (2) economy in the exploitation of the older pools in reducing to a minimum the cost of the extraction and working over of wells by the concentration of productive wells in groups. The pooling arrangement continued at Tintea as a measure of conservation, and exploitation of the unitized region went forward on the basis of the norms established in 1939. The same methods were applied in the fields of Liesti, Ceptura and Boldesti. The petroleum industry had some difficulty in providing the necessary material and the hands for work. Importation of material and machines from the United States was virtually stopped. Substitutes were provided from Germany but particularly useful were certain dispositions made by the local metallurgical industry. Despite the higher cost of the production of local material and machines, they were superior to the German product, the difference in quality justifying the higher price charged as the materials were found to be particularly adapted for the purposes of the petroleum industry. The cost of production was still further raised by the work that was imposed for national defense. The rise in costs per meter drilled was 50 per cent over those of 1939. According to bimonthly tables furnished by the Moniteur du Petrole Roumain, the deepest well completed in 1940 was an exploratory well, No. 201 of the Concordia company, drilled at Tintea and suspended at 3338 meters. This depth was reached toward the close of 1939 and the well was not deepened in 1940 became of large deviation from the vertical. The record for productive wells had been held by No. 429 at Tintea, drilled by Unirea to a depth of 3200 m., and in 1938 well No. 317 Cocorasti-Mislea, of the Colombia company, but these records were passed in 1940 by well No. 613 Liliesti of the Con-cordia company, which reached a depth of 3294 m. and had an initial production of 10 tons per day. In 1940, the same number of wells, II, had been drilled to a depth of over 3000 m. as in 1939. Five of these wells are at Tintea and six at Liliesti. In the special number of the magazine Ocl und Kohle (Oct. 22, 1940) dedicated to the petroleum industry of southeastern Europe, there appeared several articles relating to Yugos1avia.t In the first article the author calls attention to the fact that there are two fields in Yugoslavia that have been explored and exploited by more than 100 wells at variable depths during the last 50 years. These are on the Island of Mura, at the confluence of the Mura and the Drave. Additional exploration drilling in various other parts of the country has been without result, but certain ones of these explorations have revealed the existence of gas horizons that have some value, which are being used for industrial purposes. The depths of 50 of these wells was roo to 200 m.; the depths of 50 wells oil the Island of Mura ran from zoo to 500 m.; of 2 ; wells, 500 to I000 m.; of ro wells from rooo to 2000 meters. The deepest well drilling in Yugoslavia has reached 2000 in. In the Valley of Morave, in the region of Selnica, I00 km. south of Nish, there have been discovered asphalt-bearing limestones, which contain about 15 per cent asphalt and are associated with bituminous clays. Later, at Paclenica, important deposits of natural gas were found. A zone rich in gas and oil seepages runs through Pracec, Miklenska, Bujavica, etc. The author studied these regions from the point of view of stratigraphy and tectonics. The anticlines and gas-bearing domes are concentrated in two zones: the region of the Drave (Island of Mura) and the region of the Save, southeast of zagreb, which contains the gas field in exploitation in the region of Bujavica. A full description of the productive region of the Island of Mura has been given by Egon Bohm, a geologist, in the second article mentioned. This includes a history of the exploration and exploitation that took place under Hungarian rule in this region. The most important exploration was effected between 1884 and 1885 by Stavenov and Stinger, of Vienna. In 1927 work was done in the same region by Anton Raky, a well-known explorer who makes work of this kind his specialty.

The discovery of two new fields—the Reed City area of Osceola County and the Headquarters field, of Roscommon County —and the important development in Winterfield township, Clare County, again demonstrate the fact that it is the unknown and unexpected that enter very definitely into the oil-producing history of Michigan. This is particularly true in the area of thick glacial drift in the north central part of the state, where the new prolific fields have been discovered this year. This shifts the interest from the southwestern part of the lower peninsula, where a number of pools were rapidly developed during 1939 and 1940, back into the Central Basin area. As a result of strict proration in the new areas, the production for the state of Michigan for the year has not been as great as in 1940 or 1939. In 1941 the total production was 16,300,000 bbl., in 1940 it was 19,551,000 bbl., and in 1939, which was the peak year, it was 23,300,000 bbl. However, the discovery of the new fields this year nearly doubles the estimated reserves for Michigan reported at the end of 1940 In 1941 about 12,000,000 bbl. of oil was produced from the older fields, in which the individual well productions were so small that proration was not an important factor. The total production for the state from the discovery of oil in 1925 through 1941 now stands at 161,205,000 barrels. ActIVe Oil Fields Reed City Field.—In the Reed City field, Lincoln township, Osceola County, only small oil wells were completed during 1939 and 1940. The discovery of much larger production in wells drilled somewhat deeper, by The Pure Oil Co. and the Weber Oil Co., in the early part of 1941, led to the rapid development in this area. Some wells have had initial productions as high as 10,000 bbl. By the end of the year III producing wells were completed, with an average depth of 3600 ft., from the Detroit River formation of Devonian age. The entire development of the field to the end of 1941 was on 20-acre spacing. Headquarters Field.—The Headquarters field, which lies along the line between Clare and Roscommon Counties, was one of the most important discoveries of 1941 and will be the scene of vigorous development during 1942. Production so far has been from the Traverse lime at about 3400 it., and development has indicated that this is probably one of the most productive Traverse pools yet discovered. One well had been given a potential of 10,000 bbl. per day. Dry holes well located in relation to big producers indicate that it is a typical Traverse development. Winterfield Field.-This field, in Winter-field township, Clare County, was discovered late in 1940. By December 1941, 14 Dundee and 5 Traverse producers had been completed. The Dundee lime is found at a depth of 3750 it. and the Traverse lime at 3070 it. Producing conditions in the Dundee seem to be erratic because of varying porosity in the dolomit-ized limestone. Kawkawlin Field.—The Kawkawlin field, which was discovered by the Gulf Refining Co. in 1938, is in Monitor and Kawkawlin townships, Bay County. Small production

Beds or lenses of potash and magnesium salts are found in a thick salt section (Salado) overlain by Rustler Red Beds in several members of which water is present and from one of which the rehery process water used by International is obtained. Most of the holes drilled are less than 1000 ft. deep, but some wildcat holes have exceeded 3- ft. cable or rotary tools are used to drill down to the salt. when samples of water are desired the cable rig is used, but when this is not necessary, and where caving material is present, the rotary rig has an advantage. The rotary rig has a further advantage in that only one machine is required to drill and core the entire hole, whereas the cable rig must be moved off to make way for the core drill. Casing is placed in the upper section of the hole as required to shut off water, and a 5 3/16 in. string is set in the top of the salt before coring starts. With the rotary rig drilling is often carried to the salt with no casing, as drilling mud seals off caving ground and water-bearing strata, and a string of 4-in. line pipe or 4-in. flush-joint casing is landed on top of salt. Several types of gasoline-powered core rigs have been used in the field and all recover a 2 1/2-in. core. More recently the Sullivan Model 37 rotary rig has been tried, and a Sullivan Model N has been adapted to use a rotary bit in the upper section. Core is recovered in 20 ft. sections with a double-tube core barrel, and the bit used is a bottom-discharge type set with diamonds. The drilling fluid must be a saturated brine to prevent solution and etching of the minerals present. Blowouts are apt to Occur from nitrogen gas trapped under the several polybalite beds, and some have been strong enough to blow the tools out of the hole. Core recovery is practically loo per cent. All holes are plugged after drilling, with cement through the salt section and opposite each water horizon* and mud through the remainder of the hole. Cores are carefully logged and preserved, and in sections containing potash and magnesium minerals they are quartered and analyzed. The correlation of Ore beds between drill holes is briefly described. Introduction Beds Or lenses of potash and magnesium salts are found at varying depths in a thick deposit of salt (Salado formation) in what is known as the Permian Basin, in southeast New Mexico and West Texas. The Salado formation is Composed chiefly of common salt (halite) with numerous beds of anhydrite, polyhalite, and the soluble potash minerals carnallite, sylvite and langbeinite. Many other minerals are present in small amounts but their Presence has no bearing On the coring technique. Before starting to core the salt section it is necessary to penetrate 300 to 600 ft. of unconformably overlying Permian sediments (Rustler formation) which are composed of red and gray clay, sand, anhydrite, dolomitic limestone and occasional lenses of salt. EARLY investigations1 of the tensile properties of fcc single crystals did not reveal the easy glide region of crystals with axial orientations inside the standard stereographic triangle. With the production of high-purity metal, a region of easy glide became known1 Consequently, modern work of fcc single crystals ordinarily uses high-purity metal. In order to determine whether further purification of aluminum beyond 99.992 pct purity would result in significant alteration of the tensile properties of single-crystal specimens, metal was zone-refined and crystals grown from the purified material were compared to crystals grown from the original material. Some similar studies were made of gold and silver crystals. Aluminum. The material to be zone-refined was cast into bars 1/4 by 1/2 by 8 in. A zone, approximately 1-1/2 in. in length, was passed over each bar eighteen times at a rate of 6 in. per hr. Melting and stirring were carried out by an induction heater under a vacuum of approximately 10"5 mm Hg, the metal being held in a graphite container. he last 3 in. of each processed bar were then cut off and discarded. No quantitative determination of purity was made, but the effectiveness of the zone refining was tested by a method first suggested by Walton, Tiller, Rutter, and winegard3 depending on the relation between cell structure and impurity content. Rutter and Chalmers4 have shown that a cellular substructure is associated with the presence of impurities during solidificatibn, and have shown how solute rejection at the freezing interface can lead to such an association. Thus the observation of cells gives evidence of impurities being present. To look for cells, the last quarter of a zone-refined bar was cut off, remelted, and grown rapidly into a single crystal. It was then heavily electropolished and thermally etched.~ Cells were revealed by the presence of many parallel rows of etch pits. The same process was carried out with material from the first half of the bar, but no cells were detected. These observations give evidence that a significant amount of impurity material was moved to the "dirty" end of the zone-refined bars. Further indication of purification was obtained from recrystallization experiments. It was found that, after cold rolling to a 97 pct reduction in thickness, the material from the pure end of the bar re-crystallized at room temperature, but the material from the "dirty" end did not. Other investigators6 have previously reported that zone-refined aluminum recrystallized at room temperature. The purified material was cast into 1/4 by 1/4 in. bars, and seeded crystals were grown in a (100) orientation and in a single slip orientation where the Schmid factor is m =2. The crystals were then cut to the desired length, annealed for 24 hr at 610°C, furnace-cooled, and etched in Tucker's etch. The crystals were tested in a floor-model Instron machine, using a gage length of 4 in. and a strain rate of 1/2 pct per min. The resulting curves are shown in Fig. 1. It is seen that the differences between the curves for zone-refined and original-purity materials are small. These differences are within the scatter observed for crystals of the original purity. In particular, the zone refining does not significantly affect the onset of the different "stages" of the curves.

P. S. ROLLER,* College Park, Md.-The author introduces the idea of a grind limit, or lower size limit of the particles formed directly by grinding, and this is stipulated to be 0.70 micron. I wonder where all the particles come from that lie between the resolving power of the microscope and 0.7 micron, which are seen under a microscope in examining a sample of grind? There is also introduced the idea of excess fines; this is all right in itself but the author's quantitative definition seems to be virtually impossible to justify, and, moreover, is obscure. Just why E, the excess fines, should be defined as the distance between an F line and a [?] line is hard to follow, and just where the distance should be measured does not appear to be stated, as it should be since the F and [?] lines intersect and the distance between will depend upon where that distance is measured. The basis of the presentation is the relation of log weight against log size that was "discovered" by Schuhmann. While this relation is implied to fit, the only evidence that I can see is a slightly irregular line in Fig. I between 2 per cent and 18 per cent by weight and then a precipitous drop at 18 per cent away from any sort of straight line. Some of the conclusions are rather startling. It is stated that E, the excess fines, remains constant for all the comminution products of any particular material, except that it may decrease for some coarse crusher products. No reason is given for this assertion. One would, on the contrary, expect that excess fines, if such a concept is permissible, would generally vary with different conditions instead of being constant. Again, "as much net energy is required to reduce a ton of quartz to particles of the grind-limit diameter (namely, of course, 0.7 micron) by grinding as is required to melt the quartz," This would require many data to prove, but no proof is given; any considera¬tion would reveal the impossibility of such a result. Still further, ore samples "ground to widely different sizes, and with different circulating loads and different size distributions or product, show the same production of new surface area per revolution of the mill, when this grind limit is used." This statement is confuted by ordinary experience, which teaches that grinding efficiency varies generally with the condition of material. For example, the cushioning effect of fines is widely accepted, while the inefficiency of a ball mill when the feed is too coarse is also well known. R. SCHUHMANN, JR.,* Cambridge, Mass.¬Contrary to Mr. Bond's stand, there is a great deal of miscellaneous experimental evidence that comminution does not stop at around 0.7 micron, nor does it cease consuming energy at that point. Comminution is in fact recognized as an important method of producing colloids.5 Mechanical comminution methods were used by von Weimarn6 to produce colloidal dispersions of a variety of solids, including the minerals chalcocite, galena, hematite, stibnite. Utzino7 gives average particle sizes ranging from 0.02 to 0.09 micron for colloids produced by mechanical comminution of several crystalline solids. Andreasen and Berg8 have ground

Hunt Medal, The Hadfield Prize, The J. E. Johnson Jr., Award, The Lewisohn Platinum Prize to senior members, and the President's Prize to junior members. ROBERT W. HUNT MEDAL The partners of Robert W. Hunt established a fund which was presented to the Institute at a fitting ceremony on May 27, 1920, to establish an annual medal and a sum of money to be awarded under the following rules: 1. The award shall consist of two prizes; first of a gold medal, second of a sum of money; a certificate to accompany each prize. The money prize shall not be awarded to. a member over 40 years of age, but under unusual circumstances, both prizes may be allotted to one person provided that he is not over 40 years of age. In general it will be understood that the Committee shall award the money prize to the younger men, rather than the medal. 2. The awards shall be made not oftener than once a year to that person or persons contributing to the Institute the best original paper or papers on iron and steel. The scope of the term "iron and steel" shall be determined by the sub-committee considering the awards. In general, papers dealing with the practical side of the subject have preference over those dealing with the theoretical side in recognition of the fact that Captain Hunt's main contributions to the industry have been in the improvement of production and quality of material. 3. A sub-committee of three to five including the Chairman of the Iron and Steel Committee, shall be appointed by the iron and Steel Committee annually to adjudge the award subject to approval. 4. The awarding committee shall submit its report to the Iron and Steel Committee at its October Meeting, and the. award be certified to the Secretary of the Institute in time to permit the presentation to be made at the Annual Meeting of the Institute. 5. The recipient of the award shall be designated "The Hunt Medallist." SIR ROBERT HADFIELD PRIZE Sir Robert Hadfield has offered an Institute prize of $1000 for researches with regard to the different forms of combination of carbon in iron and steel. Until within a few weeks no paper has been submitted which could compete for this prize. If the paper in hand should not meet the requirements, the donor has suggested that the prize be transferred and offered for: (a) the determination of the hardness in metals in connection. with super-hardness, (b) in consideration of questions of fuel economy, (c) in consideration of questions of industrial development and labor. The depths of 50 of these wells was roo to 200 m.; the depths of 50 wells oil the Island of Mura ran from zoo to 500 m.; of 2 ; wells, 500 to I000 m.; of ro wells from rooo to 2000 meters. The deepest well drilling in Yugoslavia has reached 2000 in. In the Valley of Morave, in the region of Selnica, I00 km. south of Nish, there have been discovered asphalt-bearing limestones, which contain about 15 per cent asphalt and are associated with bituminous clays. Later, at Paclenica, important deposits of natural gas were found. A zone rich in gas and oil seepages runs through Pracec, Miklenska, Bujavica, etc. The author studied these regions from the point of view of stratigraphy and tectonics. The anticlines and gas-bearing domes are concentrated in two zones: the region of the Drave (Island of Mura) and the region of the Save, southeast of zagreb, which contains the gas field in exploitation in the region of Bujavica. A full description of the productive region of the Island of Mura has been given by Egon Bohm, a geologist, in the second article mentioned. This includes a history of the exploration and exploitation that took place under Hungarian rule in this region. The most important exploration was effected between 1884 and 1885 by Stavenov and Stinger, of Vienna. In 1927 work was done in the same region by Anton Raky, a well-known explorer who makes work of this kind his specialty.

Changes became necessary in dredging methods employed in Idaho through passage of the Dredge Mining Protective Act (1954). Among other provisions, the law requires dredge operators to construct settling ponds of sufficient capacity and character to reasonably clarify the water used in the mining process before such water is discharged into the stream. Porter Bros. Corp., a placer mining company with many years operating experience in Oregon and Montana, became interested in strategic mineral placers in Idaho in 1950 when it was learned that prospectors had discovered a radioactive mineral deposit in Bear Valley Creek, 95 miles northeast of Boise. The company acquired mining leases and proceeded with exploration and development work on the property. After extensive research had resulted in the determination of successful separation processes, contracts were negotiated with the federal government and deliveries of columbium-tantalum and uranium concentrates commenced in 1956. The mining operations are located in a primitive area of Idaho among salmon spawning grounds and crystal-clear mountain trout streams. To avoid involvement in a very controversial issue, it appeared advisable for the company to develop water treatment procedures exceeding those requirements stated in the Idaho Dredge Mining Protective Act. Operation: The company operates one 6 cu ft continuous bucketline dredge and one 4 1/4 cu ft continuous bucketline dredge on the property. The dredges are jig-equipped, with feed being screened to 3 in. by trommels. The screening and gravity concentration methods satisfactorily separate the heavy minerals from companion clays, sand, and gravel. However, this separation of the heavy minerals requires water from the dredge pond with a minimum content of silt and colloids; therefore, water for dilution is added continuously to the dredge pond to suppress solids buildup. Discharge of this highly turbid water to maintain the proper pond level would ultimately result in an excessive silt load in Bear Valley Creek. To prohibit the turbid pond water from flowing directly into Bear Valley Creek, it was necessary to isolate the dredging area. Main by-pass canals were constructed along each side of the dredge pond and numerous secondary canals were dug for diverting seepage and snow runoff. One by-pass canal, extending more than two miles along the west side of the valley, diverts the main stream as well as tributaries entering from the west; a canal east of the dredge area diverts streams entering from that direction. At the beginning of operations in 1956, the dredge pond effluent was filtered through tailings and settled by use of coagulents in a series of lagoons. The filtrate was then discharged directly into the stream. Although this procedure gave satisfactory results in conformance with the state law, ice buildup and lagoon freezing hindered the efficiency of the process during periods of low temperature. For this reason, testing began in 1956 on a water treatment process that would operate efficiently under the extreme weather conditions encountered in Bear Valley. Development of Water Treatment System: Porter Bros. Corp. established the following requirements for effective continuous treatment of dredge pond effluent to the stream which, at low flow conditions, effluent to the stream which, at low flow conditions, would not result in a turbidity exceeding 25 ppm in the stream, 2) produce a sludge sufficiently dense to minimize disposal area requirements, 3) be semi-portable to follow dredge movements, 4) be capable of operating at low temperatures, and 5) be capable of handling a variety of capacities and turbidities.
