In choosing the unusual title given to this paper, in which the term "cyclic " might be substituted for "intermittent," my idea has been simply in respect of precision. We might say old method vs. new method, but that antithesis implies something of substitution that has not occurred and perhaps is not in sight. We may say horizontal retorts vs. vertical, but none of the older retorts are truly horizontal, and there are three different types of vertical retorts. Other complexities might be suggested. There is, however, a broad distinction between distilling that is accomplished in a periodic cycle, generally daily; and distilling that is accomplished continuously, irrespective of whether it be done in the vertical retorts of the New Jersey process or in the retorts of the Trollhät-tan process. In offering a summary of the present state of the art with the intermittent process, I shall not have any idea of exemplifying it through descriptions of any single plants, but shall rather divide among the main steps of the process and outline what is best developed among them. In pursuing this thought, it will manifestly be impossible to make a composition that will exemplify the acme of good practice, for the latter will always be a function of the cost of labor, fuel, etc., which are widely variable. As of 1929, in respect of labor we might generalize the average plant wage in the Pittsburgh-Wheeling district of the United States at $5 per day; in Oklahoma at $3; in Great Britain at $3; in Germany at $1.75-$2; in Belgium and France at $1. With high labor costs the metallurgist will naturally use means of the nature of mechanization that with low labor would be uneconomical when capital charges are taken into account. Nor may we from records of performance safely make positive deductions in respect of the efficiency of different types of furnaces unless they have been tested comparatively under identical conditions in the same works. We shall find gas-fired regenerative furnaces showing coal consumption from 1.2 tons down to 0.7 per ton of roasted ore, which may be ascribable to difference in the thermal value of the coal that is used or to differences in proportions of the parts of the furnace, which is something quite distinct from the principle of the furnace. SOME advances have been made recently in the theory of the kinetics of precipitation from metallic solid solution despite the complexities of the problem, but there is surprisingly little quantitative information available on rates of precipitation with which to test present theory or upon which to build new theory.‡ Attempts to measure rates of precipitation have been beset with difficulties which originate both in the anomalies that attend the changes in the properties selected for measurement, as, for example, in electrical conductivity or mechanical properties, and also in the complexities in the structural changes in some systems, as in the aluminum-copper system. If the functional relationship between the quantity of precipitate and the value of the selected property is uncertain, measurements of that property are obviously of uncertain utility in determining absolute rates of precipitation. If the precipitating system passes through one or more transition stages, the interpretation of measured rates lacks definiteness; in such cases, it is necessary to measure the rate of reaction in each separate stage, if the rate measurements are to have any significance from the kinetic point of view.* These difficulties cannot be wholly avoided, for at least in some measure they are characteristic of the process of precipitation from solid solution, but they can be minimized both by the selection of a simple system and by the use of a method of measurement relatively free from anomalous behavior. The present paper reports dilatometric measurements on the rate of precipitation of silicon from the aluminum-rich solid solution in the aluminum-silicon system-a study that approaches the desiderata of simplicity. The aluminum-silicon system offers advantages from these points of view: there are no known anomalies in the property changes accompanying precipitation; 2.3,4 there are no known transition stages; the precipitate is an element, not a compound, and both matrix and precipitate are cubic, and while the structures are not identical (the solid solution is face-centered cubic and the precipitate is diamond cubic), the system at least approaches the ideal case of a crystal precipitating from a matrix of the same crystal type-the ideal case which Becker5 assumed in treating the precipitation process theoretically. An experimental study of the movement of markers in the systems Cu/a-brass, Cu/Sna-solid solution, Cu/Ala-solid solution, Cu/Ni, Cu/Au, Ag/Au, employing many types of markers and a variety of temperatures. Marker movement is confirmed and undoubtedly associated with the manner in which atoms move during diffusion. EVERAL years ago Smigelskas and Kirkendall' •S reported measurements on the interdiffusion of copper and a-brass and on the movement of inert markers placed at the original join. These markers were observed to move toward the a-brass side of the join, and from this it was inferred that zinc diffuses in a-brass more rapidly than copper. Similar results were reported a little earlier for the diffusion of solvents into high polymer solids.' This has attracted much attention, particularly from those interested in the mechanism and the theory of diffusion: Seitz3 has employed it in supporting the vacancy theory of diffusion; from the data Darken4 has calculated separate diffusion coefficients for copper and zinc, developing a "phenomenological" theory of diffusion; and Bardeen5 has employed it in constructing a general theory, including therein the work of Seitz and Darken, as has Le Claire. These matters have recently been reconsidered in a sympo~ium.7 Some reason has existed for questioning the work of Smigelskas and Kirkendall.' Their technique consisted in electroplating copper on a-brass, upon the surface of which Mo-wires had been secured, and then diffusing, measuring the extent of diffusion along the normal to the join, and measuring the marker displacement in the same direction by a comparator determination of the distance between Mo-wires on opposite sides of the electroplated brass sample. It has been suspected that the copper plate might have been porous, and that the original interface might have been an imperfect join, both contributing to the transfer of the volatile zinc by vapor transfer;' it has also been questioned whether the marker movement might not in a measure be a property of the marker itself; etc. These legitimate questions require experimental answers; the present paper offers such answers. Moreover, Smigelskas and Kirkendall studied the effect only in the Cu-Zn system and at one temperature; the attention which the work of Smigelskas and Kirkendall has commanded recommends similar

A tentative 870°C isothermal section, the solidus equilibria, and the solubility of Tic and graphite in the nickel solid solution have been determined with arc-cast specimens. Each of the Ni-Ti intermetallics forms two-phase fields with Tic; only Ti,Ni has a measurable solubility for carbon. A quasi-binary eutectic exists between Tic: and a titanium-rich nickel solid solution; ternary eutectics occur on either side, with TiNis or with graphite. Graphite is in equilibrium with a nickel solid solution containing a ratio of Ti/C which increases below the solidus. DURING the past decade, titanium-carbide cermets containing nickel or cobalt alloy binders have been widely studied for high-temperature and wear-resistant applications. Recent work has emphasized control of the carbide grain size and distribution2's and the thermal exparision match between the phases/ The present study was initiated to determine the phase compositions during the sintering or infiltration process, and during subsequent heating. Although the effects of additives and impurities in commercial compositions are important, it was necessary to consider first the pure ternary, Ni-Ti-C. Emphasis was placed on the nickel corner, since the nickel solid solution is the continuous phase in compositions having highest strength. Early metallographic work by Zarubin and Molkov- showed that solid solubility at either end of the section Ni-Tic is small. Edwards and Raine reported that nickel dissolves between 3 and 5 wt pct Tic at 1250° C, on the basis of microstructures of annealed, vacuum-melted powder mixtures. Although the solubility of nickel in Tic has not been measured, Tic formed by the menstruum process in liuid-iron solution contains as little as 0.06 wt pct Fe. BINARY SYSTEMS The most recent determinations of the three binary systems are summarized in Fig. 1. Titanium carbide (6) is predominant among the binary phases, and it melts above the boiling point of nickel. The Ni-C binary is based on separate liquid solubility' ) and solid solubilitylo measurements. The eutectic temperature, 1328OC, is taken from the solidus determination described below. However thermal analysis data by Morrogh and williams also show eutectic arrests in this vicinity in the absence of supercooling. The Ni-Ti binary is taken from the work of Poole

Axial tensile, ring tensile, closed end burst, and free end burst tests were done at room tempe.vature and 300°C on three batches of Zircaloy-2 sheathing zuith different textures. Knoop hardness tests were also done on all batches. The mechanical properties of the tubes were largely dependent on the percentages of cold work, but were also markedly affected by the textures, particularly with respect to deformation behavio'r. The deformation behavior observed confirmed Picklesimer's predictions, zuhereas Knoop hardness results could be correlated with texture and yield strength anisotropy after the ,method of Wheeler and Ireland. From the mechanical properties, and from efjectiue strain values deterrlzined at the fractures using a photoqid technique, it zuas concluded that tubing witlz a single preferred orientation of radial basal poles best combines strength and ductility for any given deqee of cold work. THE mechanical properties required in collapsible Zircaloy-2 fuel sheathing for water-cooled power reactors are strength to resist wrinkling deformation by coolant pressure and ductility to accommodate a small amount of deformation in service without rupturing. Zircaloy-2 tubing during fabrication develops pre- ferred orientations of the a Zr grains due to aniso-tropic deformation behavior, and these textures markedly affect mechanical properties. Picklesimer' had predicted the deformation behavior of tubes with various textures, but the texture required to provide the optimum strength and ductility for a given degree of cold work has not been reported. To investigate this problem, tests at three transverse to axial stress ratios were done at room temperature and 300°C on three batches of Zircaloy-2 tubing covering a wide range of textures and percentages of residual cold work. Knoop hardness values were also measured to correlate with preferred orientation and yield strength anisotropy after the method of Wheeler and relland.' 1) MATERIAL For this investigation, three batches of tube-reduced tubing were chosen from the Zircaloy-2 sheathing produced for the Douglas Point Reactor. Individual tubes were 191/2 in. long, 0.600 in. OD, and 0.0165 in. nominal wall thickness. The identities of the batches, together with their textures, are shown in Table I. The tubes had the normal Zircaloy-2 composition3 of 1.5 wt pct Sn, 0.3 wt pct Fe, Ni, Cr combined with the following oxygen concentrations: Batch VII 1140 to 1390 ppm 0 Batch VIII 1400 to 1750 ppm 0 Batch IX 880 to 1320 ppm 0

NORTH -CENTRAL Texas has recently become a center of interest for the oil men of America. The bringing in of the McClosky well at Ranger, Eastland County, and the shallow pool at Brownwood, Brown County, in 1917, has stimulated interest in this area to fever pitch. Oil men from all over the United States are now investing there. The area of present interest is shown by the accompanying map (Fig. 1). The money spent in leases runs into millions of dollars. It is no exaggeration to say that a strip of country 200 miles (321 km.) long and 125 miles (201 km.) wide, comprising some 15,000,000 acres (6,070,310 ha.)., has been leased practically solid at a cost for rentals and bonuses of at least $1 per acre. The test holes contracted for will certainly number 400, at a cost of at, east $5,000,000. From what has been done in the past six months, $20,000,000 at least will be spent. To pay, returns on this amount of money, new production to the extent of at least 12,000,000 bbl. must be obtained. At present, the production from new fields will not average over 5000 bbl. per (lay; three wells at Ranger are producing 3000 bbl.; 250 wells at Brownwood produce 1000 bbl.; and the Gray well, Coleman County, is as yet an unknown factor. However, at Ranger there is every indication of developing a good pool covering from 1500 to 2000 acres (607 to 809 ha;), more or less, but the wells are deep, 3400 to 3800 ft. (1036 to 1158 m.), and cost $35,000 to $40,000 to drill. Large wells are necessary to pay for such expensive holes. As new wells are drilled, the gas pressure will be lowered rapidly, and large production need not be expected. For those oil men who expect a second Cushing or an Eldorado, Ranger holds little of promise. At Brownwood, Brown County, there are some 250 shallow wells (depths from. 200 to 350 ft.) averaging 4 to 7 bbl. per day. There is a chance of an extensive producing area, for these shallow sands to the southwest, and the opening of several thousand acres of shallow oil territory, and also some promise of deeper oil horizons in the Ranger horizon, but probably all under 2500 ft.

COKE with low phosphorus content is required by some of the electrometallurgical and chemical plants recently attracted to the Pacific Northwest by the hydroelectric power available from Bonneville and Grand Coulee dams. Shipping such coke into the area from eastern points involves a high freight charge, and during wartime consumes precious rail and ship-bottom space, so it is highly desirable to produce coke from the coking coals of Washington to meet the requirements of these industries. Although coke has been made from Washington coals since 1884, little has been known about their phosphorus contents or about the extent to which phosphorus could be reduced by cleaning. An investigation was undertaken, therefore, to determine the manner in which phosphorus occurs in the coking coals of Washington and its amenability to removal by ordinary coal-washing methods. PREVIOUS WORK Phosphorus is a deleterious element in coke used for numerous metallurgical processes, including the production of pig iron, yet comparatively little published information is available on the occurrence and elimination of phosphorus in any of the coals of this country. A variation from 0.009 to 0.062 per cent phosphorus in various horizons of the Pittsburgh bed in the Connellsville region of Pennsylania has been reported,1 and a reduction in phosphorus content from 0.020 per cent in the raw coal to 0.018 per cent in the washed coal was obtained in washing coal from the same bed in the Pittsburgh area;2 the latter figures represent average analyses for a year's operation of the washery on about 800,000 tons of coal. A reduction in phosphorus content from 0.018 to 0.011 per cent in washing coal from the Pittsburgh bed at another washery was observed, and the same report provides data on the phosphorus reduction obtained by separating 10 other coals on a bath of 1.35 specific gravity.3 European investigators have been especially active in correlating phosphorus content with petrographic analysis; fusain and durain generally contain the highest percentage of phosphorus, but this relationship is not universal.4 Some of these investigators have found that phosphorus is removed in the coal-washing process,5 but others have observed that the clean coal contained as much or even more phosphorus than the raw coal.6

SiR Humphry Davy's epoch-making treatise delivered on Nov. 9, 1815, before the Philosophical Society of London, first announced and demonstrated a flame safety lamp for detecting methane in mine air. Coal mining was known in England as early as 1180, more than 600 years before the advent of a safe lighting and gas-detecting appliance. Mining, no doubt, took place first in outcrop coal, and danger from gas did not become apparent until the workings became deeper and more extensive. Davy's lamp did much to increase the safety of miners, and a modified Davy lamp is still widely used for detecting the presence and approximate amount of combustible gas in mine air. No factor in coal mining has improved more rapidly during the past 15 years than safety measures. This progress came about not only as a result of the workmen's compensation laws now in force in most of the states of the Union, but because the research work of the U. S. Bureau of Mines had demonstrated some dangers incident to coal mining which were not considered to be serious matters prior to that time. Electric power and explosives are necessary but potential hazards in American coal mines. A general mechanization program is now under way, while the mines are growing deeper and more extensive. Consequently ventilation problems are more complex and a demand has been created for positive detecting devices for carbon monoxide as well as methane. Scientists and manufacturers, working hand in hand during the past 10 years, have invented and developed appliances which make systematic and effective examination of mine air possible. The object of this paper is to describe briefly the approved testing devices in use today, with the hope that they may lead to the saving of life. Two Groups of Dangerous Coal Mine Gases Dangerous coal mine gases may be placed in two groups: (I) those that are dangerous because of their explosive properties, and (2) those that are dangerous because of their toxic properties. Methane (CH4) is the important gas of the first group, and in so-called gaseous mines constantly exudes from the coal and rock; it may accumulate and form an explosive mixture. The explosive range of methane-air mixtures is well defined. The low limit is 5 per cent., the high limit 15 per cent., and the most explosive

J. Wysor.-Pig iron; we have not made any ferro alloys; or spiegel at Bethlehem in the last 3 years. J. S. UNGER.-DO you use domestic or foreign ores? R. J. WYSOR.-In regular practice, largely foreign ores. J. S. UNGER.-How much per unit does it cost to produce that? R. J. WYSOR.-You might say it does not cost anything; we do not change our blast-furnace practice at all to obtain the dust. Although it has been a profitable byproduct, I would rather not have it unless we could reclaim it on a large scale, as we would have better working stoves. J. S. UNGER.-Does the trade take it as readily as natural salts? W. J. WYSOR.-The fertilizer dealers have been anxious to get it. This did not happen, however, until the war started. J. S., UNGER.-They have been willing to take anything since the war started. R. J. WYSOR.-Yes. However, we could have sold the material before the war; in fact, about 4 years ago, we had a contract ready to sign, but we did not think it would pay us to bother with it then. W. H. Ross, Washington, D. C.-We of the Fertilizer Division of the Bureau of Soils have been particularly interested in Mr. Wysor's investigations on the possibilities of recovering potash from the blast furnace, and we look upon the results he obtained as among the-most important that have yet appeared on the subject of finding new sources of .American potash. About 5 years ago we undertook a corresponding investigation on the recovery of potash in the cement industry. Representative samples of raw mix and ground clinker were collected from the different cement plants in this country with a view to analyzing each sample for potash. With the data thus obtained and knowing the ratio between the raw mix and the cement produced and the output of the latter, we thought it possible to calculate approximately for each plant the quantity of potash that escapes daily from the kilns. The method of crushing rock by throwing with violence against a resisting surface does not differ in principle from the method of dropping it from a height upon a specially arranged surface. The former is applied in various mills now in use, especially those for reduction of the softer rocks and minerals. The latter is the principle of the Hadsel mill. Probably not new, but Hadsel's method of approach is at least novel, and applicable to hard as well as softer rocks. An elevating wheel raises the rock and drops it from a height upon a hard metal plate or series of plates. The first commercial mill consisted of two units, one on each overhung end of a horizontal shaft, driven by a gear train from a 100-hp. motor. A description of this machine, then in operation at a mine at Georgetown, Calif., was printed in the Engineering and Mining Journal (April, 1932) and need not be repeated here. That machine took mine run ores of a size up to 12 in. and successfully produced a pulp of approximately minus 60 mesh, suitable for flotation. The mills were each 24 ft. in diameter and 3 ft. in width of face. The elevating buckets were formed of steel plates, extending inward from the periphery, inclined to the tangent at 75". This plate was 3 ft., the width of the wheel, and 2 ft. deep. One side of the wheel towards the carrying shaft was closed, the other was open except for the rim plate enclosing the ends of the buckets and extending inward about 5 ft. on the radius. About a 90" arc was immersed in a concrete tank, which acted as a classifier. The breaking plates, seven in number, were carried cantilever through the open side of the wheel. The lowest plate was placed just above the water level. The illustrations (Figs. 1 and 2) make plain the general arrangements. The plant set-up was somewhat crude but worked well enough to demonstrate the weak points of the mill. In this operation it was early apparent that, considering all the factors from delivery of the mine run ore to the final pulp for flotation or cyanida-tion, the Hadsel mill offered possibilities of great simplicity of plant and savings in power. Continuous operation developed mechanical weaknesses, some of which were readily discernible in details of design, some became more apparent as operations progressed.

THIS is a critical examination of the theory that the amount of carbon necessary to form the iron-carbon (carbide) eutectoid is lowered by the addition of any carbide-forming element. Although this theory has been built up over a long period of years,, it appears, in the light of recent published investigations upon the ternary constitutional diagrams of iron with carbon and other alloying elements, to be no longer tenable. A survey of these new results, summarized below, shows that (as is known) some metals lower the carbon content of the iron-carbon (carbide) eutectoid, whereas others raise it, but (as not heretofore clearly set forth) some first move the eutectoid in one direction and then, at higher concentrations, shift it in the opposite direction. Moreover, these differences in behavior exist even among the common alloying metals classed as carbide formers. PART I INFLUENCE OF BODY-CENTERED CUBIC ELEMENTS The effects of the various body-centered cubic metals (chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, columbium and tantalum) are reviewed individually. Iron-carbon-chromium System.-In the monograph on Alloys of Iron and Chromium, Kinzel and Crafts' concluded that the carbon content of the eutectoid is lowered by increasing the chromium content. The quantitative influence of chromium on the eutectoid point of iron-carbon alloys was shown by Monypenny2 (Fig. I) and no data have been forthcoming to refute his findings. Iron-carbon-tungsten System.-Gregg,3 in the monograph on Alloys of Iron and Tungsten, accepted the data showing that tungsten decreases the amount of carbon required to form the eutectoid. The influence of tungsten on the eutectoid percentage of carbon as determined by Oberhoffer and Daeves4 is shown in Fig. a; these results have received general approval. Iron-carbon-molybdenum System.-In the monograph on Alloys of Iron and Molybdenum, Gregg5 reviewed the work of Guillet,6 Swinden,7 and Reed,8 all showing that molybdenum lowered the carbon content of the eutectoid, whereas Takei9 contradicted this conclusion. Svetchnikoff and Alferova,10 a little later, showed that large additions of molybdenum shift the eutectoid to the right. These last-named investigators found that molybdenum, up to 1.2 per cent, shifts the pearlite point and the point of maximum solubility of cementite in the gamma phase only slightly in the direction of lower carbon content; on the other hand, increasing amounts of molyb-

The United States is self-sufficient in bituminous coal and lignite resources to meet the high range of energy demands forecast for the remainder of this century and beyond. The known or proved recoverable reserves of energy from coal in the United States are estimated to be 88% of all fuel reserves, whereas the energy reserves for oil are estimated to be 276, gas 376, shale oil 5% and uranium 2% (as now used). The demand for all forms of energy used in the United States is increasing at a rate of 3% to 4% per year. Presently, coal is competitive on a supply and cost basis with other fuels in conversion to electrical energy and as a source of energy for converting raw minerals to metals and nonmetals, but it is not competitive in transportation and other uses that demand the high flexibility that oil and gas enjoy because of their form. Coal conversion to fluid forms is essential to make it interchangeable with gas and oil to meet the markets they now occupy. Essentially, the chemical constituents that make up coal are the same hydrocarbons that make up oil and gas; it is a matter of reconstituting the proportions of hydrocarbons to make coal interchangeable with the other fuels. The production of coal has fluctuated widely between the peak production of 631 million tons in 1947 to a low of 403 million tons in 1961. Throughout this period, the total value of the production, f.o.b. mines, has averaged more than $2 billion annually. Beginning with 1962, there has been a steady upward trend in coal production with only minor fluctuations that were mainly caused by labor disputes. Output for the latest typical year, 1970, was 588 million tons. Production in 1971 was affected by a major strike and dropped to 548 million tons. Exports of coal from United States to foreign countries have increased steadily and developed into a substantial annual market for over 71 million tons per year. About 56 million tons of this is suitable for metallurgical purposes, and the remaining 15 million tons is exported for electric power generation. INTRODUCTION ISOTHERMAL transformation, or "austempering," of a carbon-containing austenite at elevated temperatures yields so-called "intermediate products." Their structure and properties are, for a given hardness, rather different from those of "tempered martensite" obtained on conventional quenching and tempering.1 Several investigators2,3 have found that for high carbon and slightly alloyed steels the intermediate products formed at temperatures close to that of the martensite reaction possess strength properties superior to those of tempered martensite. The structure of these low temperature, intermediate products is generally acicular (bainite) but clearly different from that of martensite. However, at higher austempering temperatures, between 1000 and 1300°F (540 and 700°C) carbon steels were found to exhibit a rather low ductility.4-5 Thus notch bar tensile tests showed the ratio between notch strength and regular tensile strength to decrease with increasing austempering temperature. For ductilities below a few percent this notch strength ratio is a measure of ductility, according to investigations on low alloy steels.6-7 Furthermore the presence of intermediate products formed unintentionally on quenching was considered as responsible for the low ductility and impact energy of some heat treated steels.8 These intermediate products could result from partial transformation at the so-called "nose-temperature" where the rate of the transformation is a maximum. Tempering improved such mixtures of martensite and intermediate products, their properties approaching those of tempered martensite of equal hardness. The following investigation constitutes an attempt to determine certain strength properties of a partially austempered and subsequently quenched low alloy steel, namely, a chromium steel (SAE 5140). The structures formed by such a treatment should consist of a mixture of intermediate products formed on austempering and a martensite formed on oil quenching from the austempering temperature. It was intended, by varying the austempering time, to vary the quantity of the intermediate products between zero and 100 pct. The austempering temperature of 860°F was selected after extensive preliminary tests close to the nose-temperature. Austempering at this temperature yielded an acicular intermediate product. Additional tests under less exacting conditions were made for an austempering temperature of 950°F where the intermediate product appeared to be very fine pearlite. This is a critical examination of the theory that the amount of carbon necessary to form the iron-carbon (carbide) eutectoid is lowered by the addition of any carbide-forming element. Although this theory has been built up over a long period of years, it appears, in the light of recent published investigations upon the ternary constitutional diagrams of iron with carbon and other alloying elements, to be no longer tenable. A survey of these new results, summarized below, shows that (as is known) some metals lower the carbon content of the iron-carbon (carbide) eutectoid, whereas others raise it, but (as not heretofore clearly set forth) some first move the eutectoid in one direction and then, at higher concentrations, shift it in the opposite direction. Moreover, these differences in behavior exist even among the common alloying metals classed as carbide formers. PART I Influence of Body-centered Cubic Elements The effects of the various body-centered cubic metals (chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, columbium and tan. talum) are reviewed individually. Iron-carbon-chromium System.—In the monograph on Alloys of Iron and Chromium, Kinzel and Crafts1 concluded that the carbon content of the eutectoid is lowered by increasing the chromium content. The quantitative influence of chromium on the eutectoid point of iron-carbon alloys was shown by Monypenny2 (Fig. I) and no data have been forthcoming to refute his findings. Iron-carbon-tungsten System.—Gregg,3 in the monograph on Alloys of Iron and Tungsten, accepted the data showing that tungsten decreases the amount of carbon required to form the eutectoid. The influence of tungsten on the eutectoid percentage of carbon as determined by Oberhoffer and Daeves4 is shown in Fig. 2; these results have received general approval. , I ron-carbon-molybdenum System.—In the monograph on Alloys of Iron and Molybdenum, Gregg5 reviewed the work of Guillet,6 Swinden,7 and ReedI8 all showing that molybdenum lowered the carbon content of the eutectoid, whereas Takei9 contradicted this conclusion. Svetchnikoff and Alferova,10 a little later, showed that large additions of molybdenum shift the eutectoid to the right. These last-named investigators found that molybdenum, up to 1.2 per cent, shifts the pearlite point and the point of maximum solubility of cementite in the gamma phase only slightly in the direction of lower carbon content; on the other hand, increasing amounts of molyb-S

In 1915, H. A. Guess, Vice President of American Smelting & Refining Co., in charge of its Mining Department, learned that the Anglo-Newfoundland Development Co., Ltd., a pulpwood and paper-mill enterprise, had found upon its large concession in Newfoundland, and had opened up by shaft to the third level and some drifting, a lenticular orebody indicating about 100,000 tons, as an extremely fine-grained sulfide ore, averaging about 0.05 oz. Au, 4 oz. Ag, 1.5 per cent Cu, 10 per cent Pb, 18 per cent Zn; and that having sent parcels of this ore to Minerals Separation, Ltd., and various other metallurgical testing concerns without obtaining any success in commercial separations thereof, had discontinued work thereon and let the workings fill. Mr. Guess wrote to the general manager of that company and obtained a few hundred pounds of the typical ore, which he sent to his company's metallurgical testing laboratory at Flat River, Mo., outlining various flotation tests desired thereon, in an endeavor to obtain separation into a commercial lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate. But the art of flotation had not then progressed far enough to treat such ore, the galena and zinc blende being so fine grained that grinding to about 300 mesh was required to release the mineral particles in their gangue. Mr. Guess had flotation and other tests continued upon this ore from time to time with whatever new reagents and flotation devices were evolved as time went on, and finally, in 1925, he succeeded in effecting in his company's testing plant, then at Wallace, Idaho, separations into lead concentrates and zinc concentrates of satisfactory commercial grade. Mr. Guess then proceeded to unwater, examine and sample the property and made with the owners a partnership operating agreement upon the mine itself and a considerable area surrounding it, and in the early summer of 1926 began to prospect for additional orebodies, utilizing for such prospecting geophysical methods under the direction of Hans Lundberg, methods which up to that time had been little used in mining in the western hemisphere. IN approaching the problems of sampling coal, a brief statement of certain facts that are more or less taken for granted may be helpful: 1. The coal-mine operator needs reliable data as to the physical and chemical characteristics of his coal in order to plan and control intelligently its mining, preparation, and marketing. The consumer needs such data in order to select the equipment and the coal best suited to meet his requirements, to check the quality of fuel delivered, and the efficiency of its use. Various government control agencies require such data as a basis for classifications and establishment of limits, for use in carrying out the requirements of federal, state or municipal laws. 2. All such data must be obtained by analyses, measurements, or tests made on samples, which are taken to represent the coal tested. It is now becoming generally recognized that, in accordance with statistical laws, test results from samples are not expected to represent the exact qualities of the lot or lots from which they are taken, except within statistical, or "expected" limits. Such limits are definitely specified by some present standards of the American Society for Testing Materials and the British Standards Institution. 3. Samples that give ash within satisfactory limits are usually assumed to be sufficiently accurate for other analyses, except under special conditions such as meeting close specifications for coals showing wide variability in sulphur, fusibility of ash, or other quality. 4. In modern coal sampling the increment is recognized as the basis for taking samples. For a given accuracy the number and weight of increments specified are increased with: (a) the expected ash, and (b) the top size designation of the lot to be sampled. 5. It is extremely important that every sampler recognize that: the specified number and weight of increments are minimums, and that the precautions to be used in order to take them properly are also minimums; that in the reduction of the gross sample the sizes specified for the coal after each stage of the crushing are maximum; that the quantities specified to be taken after each crushing stage are minimum; that any short cuts or failures to meet the requirements specified will reduce the statistical accuracy of the results, although it is possible that one or two checks on a few results may seem to show otherwise.

On the basis of data obtained from microscopic examination, melting observations, cooling curves, X-ray analyses, and resistance measurements, phase diagrams have been proposed for the Th-Cb and Th-Ti alloy systems. Both are simple eutectic systems and have no terminal solid solubility or intermediate phases. The eutectic between thorium and columbium occurs at a composition of about 8 wt pct Cb and a temperature of 1435°C. The Th-Ti eutectic occurs at 1190°C at the composition 12 wt pct Ti. No change was observed in the transformation temperature of thorium in either system or in the titanium transformation. RECENT study of thorium and its alloys has been promoted because of the possibility of employing this metal in nuclear reactors. Their corrosion resistant properties, nuclear characteristics, and high melting points put columbium and titanium among the many metals being employed in the study of thorium alloys. Since a knowledge of the phase relationships would be important in the application of such an alloy, investigations were undertaken to propose phase diagrams for the Th-Cb and Th-Ti systems. Experimental Procedures Thorium metal sponge was specially prepared for use in this investigation. Carbon in a quantity less than 0.04 wt pct was the principal impurity. There was also less than 0.01 pct each of iron, calcium, zinc, aluminum, and nitrogen in the thorium. Columbium, both as a powder and sheet metal, was obtained from the Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. The manufacturer's specifications indicated that the metal contains less than 1 wt pct total impurities. An analysis of the metal showed approximately 0.18 pct C in the powder and less than 0.05 pct C in the sheet. The titanium used was commercial sponge, reported to be 99.5 pct Ti. An analysis showed that this metal contained 0.2 pct Fe. Preparation of Alloys—Since the metals used in this investigation are reactive and might become contaminated on melting in a refractory crucible, the alloys were prepared by arc melting. The titanium sponge was employed in the form of small lumps while the columbium additions were made either as pressed pellets of powder or as clippings from sheet. The alloying material and the thorium sponge were melted together under argon in conventional arc melting equipment employing a tungsten electrode and a water cooled copper crucible.
