More than 20 years have passed since the publication of Lindgren and Ransome's report on the Cripple Creek District,1 which was made when the district was much more active and prosperous than in recent years. They concluded that the output of the district, which had reached its maximum of about $18,200,000 in 1900, would gradually decline, and their conclusion has been confirmed by records of subsequent production. Between 1905 and 1915 annual declines were partly compensated by encouraging increases, especially in 1908, 1914, and 1915; but a rapid continuous decline followed, due largely to the war and its after-effect's, until in 1922 the value of output was only slightly more than $4,000,000. It rose to nearly $5,000,000 in 1924, but declined again in 1925 and in 1926, when it was about $4,400,000, and represented ores mainly from deep levels in the Cresson and Portland mines. The profitable operations of these two mines were the principal factors leading to a study of ore at deep levels in the district by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Colorado Metal Mining Fund. The principal reasons for Lindgren and Ransome's conclusion were three: (I) the greater cost and difficulty of deep exploration; (2) the decrease in the number of veins with increasing depth, and (3) the probability that the telluride ore, believed to have formed at comparatively low temperature, would not persist indefinitely in depth. Operations since they made these statements have verified the first two, but call for some modification of the third. Rich telluride ore is being mined at a profit in the Portland mine 3000 ft. below the present surface, 07. 5000 ft. below the original surface of the Cripple Creek volcano, as interpreted by Lindgren and Ransome. The question arises, therefore, as to the number and extent of such deep deposits, and the answer, so far as it can now be given, must be based mainly on structural data, supplemented by data on the processes of ore deposition. Lead smelting has been an important industry in Utah for many years. The first lead smelting was done, over 60 years ago, at the Rollins mine in Beaver County, by burning heaps consisting of alternate layers of wood and high-grade carbonate ore. The lead thus obtained was molded into bullets. With the development of the mines, the problem of cheaper handling of the ore became important. The only outlet for this ore was Swansea or the Atlantic Coast but to ship to either cost $150 per ton or more for treatment and handling. From 1864 to 1871, experimenting was done with blast, Scotch hearth, and reverberatory furnaces, with the blast furnace surviving as the standard plant. The first crude furnaces were circular or hexagonal in shape, and were made of adobe and stone, which quickly burned out. They were small, about 21/2 ft. in diameter, and smelted from 3 to 10 tons in 24 hr. The metal had to be tapped from the bottom of the crucible, necessitating a shut down of the furnace during this process. This procedure caused salamanders to form around the tap hole when the furnace was started again, which frequently resulted in freezing. The campaign lasted until a tap of bullion was made. The first successful plant of the crude stone type was operated in 1870. From 1870 to 1872, there was a smelter building craze in the state. During that period, about 20 furnaces were built, chiefly near the mines, and their operation was limited and sporadic. The work was then placed in the hands of trained metallurgists, who standardized on the rectangular form of furnace. In 1871, Daggett, at the Winnamuck mine in Bingham, installed water-jackets around the smelting zone of the furnaces. These furnaces were circular; the diameter at the tuyere line was 3 ft. 6 in. and at the charge floor 5 ft. 3 in. The height from tuyere line to charge floor was 14 ft., height of tuyere line above top of crucible was 3 ft. 8 in. Furnace capacity was about 14 tons per day, with a campaign of about 16 days. A technique for collecting and analyzing the small quantities of gases desorbed on heating metal powders has been developed. The gases collected from copper powders of various types of manufacture have been analyzed and found to contain H2O, CO2, and SO2. The quantities of gas evolved vary from 0.05 to 1.0 milliliter, under standard con-ditons of temperature and pressure, per gram of powder. The source of the gas has been traced to surface films on the powder. IN the powder-metal industry it is recognized that the presence of gases in the powders affects the processing and resulting properties of the sintered product. Several sources for these gases are possible; namely, chemical reactions with the sintering atmospheres, inclusion. of gases during compacting, dissolved gases in the metal powder, and sorbed gases on the metal-,powder surfaces.1, 2, 3 Since the quantities of the gases are relatively small, no direct attempt has been made to collect and analyze them nor to isolate their source. The work that has been done has been concerned with the dimensional stability of the product., its porosity, density, or mechanical and physical properties. Conclusions are drawn on the basis of studies of this type as to the probable effect of gases on these properties. 4, 5, 0 In the present investigation an attempt has been made to obtain quantitative data on the analysis and quantities of gases associated with copper powders manufactured in different ways. Apparatus was constructed to collect gases evolved from loosely packed powder samples on heating to various temperatures under a reduced pressure of helium. The powders were outgassed thoroughly in a vacuum prior to starting the collection operation in order to eliminate mechanically entrapped gases and to prevent the possible reaction of the powder with these gases. Experimental Procedures Materials—The major portion of the investigation was carried out on a single heat of water-atomized, oxygen-free, high-conductivity copper. A relatively coarse fraction of this powder, 20 to 100 mesh, was tested as a mixed powder and as various graded size fractions. THE war has caused an increasing scarcity of phosphorus and its well known alloys with copper and tin. At the same time, the production of brass and bronze, nickel-silver, cupro-nickel, and other non-ferrous alloys, has considerably increased. The manufacturers of these products had therefore to secure other materials which would serve their purpose; principally that of a deoxidizer, which could be. obtained promptly and regularly. Fortunately these materials, pure carbon-free manganese metal and manganese-copper alloy, were not hard to find-in fact, they were never lost. Manganese in various forms has been used in Europe for more than a century; in this country, however, when manganese was first used, and indeed for a long time thereafter, it was consumed mainly in the- manufacture of manganese-bronze. Many foundrymen at that time used manganese-copper with the same freedom as phosphor-copper. Although iron enters into the composition of certain- grades of bronze, it is very detrimental to non-ferrous mixtures in general; consequently ferro-manganese is not applicable, and therefore pure manganese metal, or the alloy of manganese and copper, technically free from iron and other impurities, is now being generally used. The following are the principal elements having an affinity for oxygen: 1, Sodium. 2, Potassium. 3, Calcium. 4, Strontium. 5, Barium. 6, Magnesium. 7, Aluminum, 8, Phosphorus. 9, Silicon. 10, Manganese. 11, Iron. 12, Zinc. 13, Lead. Each metal has its natural flux, or deoxidizer, in the form of a metal or non-metal which will alloy with it, and has a strong affinity for oxygen. For example, phosphorus, as is well known, acts very beneficially in copper alloys that contain tin. Within 'the last few years, and particularly since the war began, the great value of manganese in nickel alloys has been demonstrated, and one by one the manufacturers of these products have adopted its use. While manganese has not so strong an affinity for oxygen as magnesium, aluminum, or silicon, it is nevertheless sufficiently powerful to reduce any oxide of nickel, copper, or zinc that may be present in the nickel alloy to be purified.

IN a recent paper Kuczynski' studied the rate at which the crack between a metallic plane and a spherical particle of the same material is filled up gradually when heated at temperatures near the melting point. If x is the radius of contact between plane and sphere (fig. I), Kuczynski shows experimentally that x5 = At [1] where t is the time. Assuming that the mechanism of transport of matter is the volume diffusion of vacant lattice sites, he is also able to prove Eq 1 theoretically. The constant A contains as a factor the self-diffusion coefficient of the metal and he shows that the values for this coefficient deduced from his experiments yield the same activation energy as that calculated by other methods, which is a confirmation of this point of view. Kuczynski has also considered theoretically the law of growth of x which would be expected if surface diffusion were the important mechanism. He suggests that x should then obey a law of the form x7 = At, and claims to be able to decide the mechanism involved from the observed law of growth., The purpose of this note is to prove this incorrect. On the contrary, when the mechanism is surface diffusion Eq 1 is also obeyed, but with a different constant A. Following Kuczynski, we suppose the bottom of the crack (surface A A) to have an average radius of curvature p. As a result of this curvature the concentration of adsorbed atoms in this surface, n(p) per cm2, will be smaller, and the concentration of vacant lattice sites in the neighborhood, N(p) per cm3, will be larger than the corresponding concentrations, n(w) and N(w), for a flat surface. At the Wilkes-Barre Meeting of the Institute, Dr. J. Lawrence Smith, in the course of his remarks on some peculiarities in the composition of irons, alluded to the so-called " bucltshot" iron, and exhibited a specimen of this material. He said that when the small granules, or shot, were separatetl from the mass, they could be flattencd under the hammer, and inferred that these particles had been decarburized by the blast before sinking into the hearth of the furnace, and thus we had the exceptional production of wrought iron in the blast furnace. I have recently obtained a characteristic specimen of this variety of iron from one of the furnaces at Orbisona, Pa. Considerable uncertainty existed as to its true nature and the conditions of its production. Its weight seemed to preclude the idea that it containetl much or any slag, yet its lack of strength indicated that it was not homogeneous cast iron. At times considerable quantities had been produced, which could only be utilized by charging in the furnace and remelting. The specimen, on the freshly fractured surfacc, appeared to consist of flattened globules of iron cemented together by a bluish material which one would naturally suppose to be slag, and qualitative examination for lime strengthened this supposition. It was quite difficult to obtain drillings, as there was a tendency to split in several directions as soon as pressure mas applied; but enough was obtained to undertaltc quantitative determinations. They were found to consist of two portions—one attracted by the magnet, and the other not. By repeated separation the magnetic portion was found to be 94.44 per cent., and the non-magnetic 5.56 per cent. Analyses of these gave the following results: Magnetic Portion. Non-magnetic Portion. The object of this paper is to bring to notice a method in use at the Cedar Point laboratory of Witherbees, Sherman & Co., for determining the phosphorus in the ore mined at Mineville, N. Y. This ore is magnetite, with a gangue containing crystals of apatite. In 1886, Mr. H. F. Dawes, then head chemist at the works, suggested that as all the phosphorus seemed to be in the apatite, it could be obtained in solution by dilute nitric acid. After some experimenting the following method was adopted, and has proved invaluable for rapidity and ease; half a dozen determinations requiring very little more time or trouble than one. From + to 10 grammes of ore are weighed into a 150 c.c. beaker; 50 C.C. hot water and 10 c.c. strong nitric acid are added; the beaker is covered and the contents are boiled for 1/2 hour (10 minutes sometimes proves sufficient; but 4 hour is safer). The bumping which ensues if more than & gramme is used need cause no trouble. The hot solution is filtered into a 250 C.C. beaker. The filtration and washing (with hot water) proceed rapidly, as the magnetite itself is but slightly acted upon. After the addition of 15 C.C. ammonia and 15 c.c. nitric acid, the solution is cooled to 45' C., and from 15 to 40 C.C. of molybdic acid solution is added and stirred vigorously. In 5 minutes the precipitate will be down, and the determination can be finished by any good method. At Cedar Point the method more commonly used is weighing as yellow salt. Good washed filter-paper is used, No. 0 Swedish being preferred; and dozen 3 1/2-inch filters are numbered and dried and weighed at 110°C. These are always kept in stock. The yellow salt is filtered on one of these, washed with dilute nitric acid (2 per cent. by volume); dried for 1 hour at 110' C., and then weighed, 1.63 per cent. of weight being calculated as phosphorus. Evidence that the United States is gradually converting to the metric system of measurement can be perceived today even by housewives in a supermarket. The question is no longer whether but when the country will have completed the conversion. To the extent that any bickering about metrication still exists, the debate now centers on such issues as finding agreement on details of implementation, and whether federal legislation should speed up the metric-conversion process or allow it to proceed along its present evolutionary and voluntary course. Apparently, the voluntary or "make-haste-slowly" approach is gaining widespread support. According to The Research Institute of America, Inc., if and when federal legislation is enacted it will likely include the following national ground rules: (1) A National Metric Conversion Board will develop and submit to the President and Congress a comprehensive plan to achieve a coordinated, minimum-cost changeover. (2) The change- over will be completed 8 to 10 years after the board's plan goes into effect, and by that time the US will be predominantly, though not exclusively, metric. (3) Costs will "lie where they fall"; subsidies, special tax concessions, and antitrust exemptions will not be authorized by the legislation. (4) The changeover will be voluntary because of the recognition that while some firms can "go metric" in a matter of weeks, others may require 15 years or more, and a few might never convert. (5) In determining whether or not to convert, on an individual company basis, adherence will be to the "rule of reason-that is, ". . . do not convert unless the engineering, economic, or other benefits outweigh any metric-related disadvantages. No one is talking about rip- ping up our railroad tracks or rewiring our homes just to conform to the practice of metric nations in Europe." (6) Government is to be part of the solution, not part of the problem; in effect, says The Research Institute of America, the leverage of federal procurement will not be exerted to force-feed the metric changeover but will be coordinated with the sector-by-sector conversion of the economy.*

MODERN developments in alloy steels have been so rapid and diverse that engineering practice has scarcely had time to re-appraise all items of past experience wherein conclusions became axiomatic under conditions that no longer apply. A case in point is the wet screening of abrasive ores within the fine range still looked upon as belonging exclusively to classifiers. By virtue of the development of stainless steels (18 per cent Cr, 8 per cent Ni), it is no longer true that classifiers are more economical than screens in closed circuit with large-tonnage ball or rod mills at 65 or even 100 mesh, provided a selective overgrind of the higher-gravity constitu-ents of the ore is not desired. Wet screening of ores is a highly corrosive as well as an abrasive opera-tion, because of the inevitably high degree of oxygenation of the water. Screen cloth of ordinary or spring-steel wire almost at once becomes pitted and covered with a film of corrosion products, which causes rust-blinding of fine-mesh screens and offers high frictional impedance to the flow of ore particles. On the other hand, the well-known properties of stainless steel enable it to maintain a bright surface, and so to eliminate blinding either by ore particles or by corrosion products. That a large-tonnage mill grinding hard ore to 65 mesh can be oper-ated economically in closed circuit with screens instead of classifiers has recently been demonstrated at the Copper Cliff concentrator of the International Nickel Co.; in the test to be described, a 6 ½ by 12 ½ -ft. Marcy rod mill ground from 625 to 820 tons. of ore per day to approxi-mately 65 mesh, operating in closed circuit with three 4 by 5-ft. Hum-mer screens, without any classifier.. Stainless-steel cloth gave an indicated life of several months. There was no difficulty with blinding, yet dilution and spray water could be controlled so that screen undersize averaged not less than 40 per cent solids. In contrast, ordinary carbon steel was pitted and blind with rust within 40 hours.

While our coal-mining practice, in regard to hauling on main roads, has advanced very rapidly in recent years by means of compressed air, electricity and ropes, that of gathering from rooms or working-places has remained almost stationary. Few large mines are without some method of mechanical haulage on main roads, but the gathering from working-places is still done almost entirely by means of animals or men. An effort to improve this has been made recently by the Consolidation Coal Company, under the direction of the writer, at its mines in the Georges Creek region. The seam worked is the Pittsburg bed, known locally as the " Big Vein." It is from 8 to 12 feet thick. Immediately overlying the coal there is from 5 to 6 feet of " rashings," consisting of thin alternating beds of shale and coal, which disintegrate rapidly on exposure to the air, and making a very treacherous roof. Rooms are driven from 12 to 15 ft. wide, with a single track close to one side. A line of posts is placed just far enough from this side to leave a clear space for the mine-car with a driver at the brake. This brings the post not far from the middle of the cross-bar, and provides more effectual support than if placed at the end. The tracks in these rooms are usually of 4 in. x 4 in. oak scantling, though of late years, owing to the advance in the price of lumber and the reduction in steel rails, more of the latter are being used. This track is laid by the miner. His pay for the work is included in the price per ton for mining. It is therefore, as a rule, unskillfully and often carelessly laid, and cannot be relied upon to carry safely any weight materially greater than the loaded mine-car. DURING the last 20 years, experimenters have sought to utilize pulverized coal in boiler plants, but refractory and slag troubles have usually overbalanced any, gains in efficiency that were obtained. These troubles were caused largely by lack of knowledge of the proper methods of coal preparation and lack of a furnace design that would be adaptable to pulverized-coal firing. When this information was obtained the results were so much more satisfactory that within the last 5 years approximately, 80,000 boiler hp. have been installed in plants ranging from 1000 to 20,000 boiler hp. rated capacity, which are operating at an average of 174 per cent. of rating. The first commercial installation for burning pulverized coal under boilers was made at the Parsons shops of the M. K. & T. railroad in 1916. Of eight 250-hp. water-tube boilers thus fitted, six were operated continuously for 3 yr., when oil was obtained at such a low price as to warrant its use. Since then, this plant has been operating alternately on pulverized coal and oil, depending on prevailing prices. Recently gas has been discovered within 20 mi. of this plant, so that this fuel may also be used. No change in furnace design was made when changing from pulverized coal to oil or gas firing. One of the principal advantages of this method of firing is its ability to utilize, with maximum efficiency, all kinds of coal, irrespective of quality or physical characteristics. In fact, quite a number of the present pulverized-coal installations were made for the purpose of utilizing coal that could not be marketed or used in any other way. The Pacific, Coast Coal Co., at Black Diamond, Wash., formerly hand fired the boilers, using approximately 125 tons of prepared steam-size coal daily. The Black Diamond steam coal is the best quality of coal for steaming purposes mined in that section of the country, and there is a market for all that can be produced. By installing a pulverizing plant, it was possible to substitute coal of a size and quality that had no commercial value, so that 125 tons daily of the best steam coal formerly used at the mines is now marketed.

THE Hayden mill of the Ray Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corporation, is now equipped with two 9 by 12-ft. rod mills having a daily capacity of 6000 tons of coarse-crushing plant product from the mine. These two mills crush a ¾ -in. product to approximately 19 per cent on 14 mesh, with only one pass through the mills. Each rod mill has taken the place of four sets of 42-in. Garfield rolls with their attendant screens, and is making a product for the fine-grinding department comparable to that formerly made by rolls in closed circuit with screens. The rod mills are lined with wave-type liners of white iron, varying in thickness from 2 to 3 in. The shell and end liners last approximately 600 to 700 days. Manganese-steel lifter bars, 3 5/8 in. thick, are used, spaced about 11 in. apart, and they give a life of 350 to 450 days. Fig. 1 shows the general design and thickness of the wave-type liners and lifter bars; 1 ½ -in. liner bolts are used to fasten the lifter bars to the shell. The shell liners are held in place by the tapered lifter bars. A 3/4-in. wood backing is used between the shell and the liners. The rod-mill scoop has removable manganese-steel lips, which last 250 to 300 days. The scoop proper has shown some wear in spots, and these spots have been protected by rubber bolted over them. Water and milk of lime are added to the elevator feeding the mill, but not enough water to cause a pounding of the rods against the shell. Roughly, the water added amounts to 25 to 33 per cent of the ore. Additional water is added to the mill discharge to facilitate distribution to the classifier bowls in the fine-grinding department. Rods are charged to the mill once every four days, the mill being down about 20 min. for this purpose. Other delays are negligible, and usually are due to a loose liner bolt or possibly power trouble. However, these occasions are extremely rare. In charging the mill, a crane is used

IT has been shown that the isothermal transformation of austenite in a special steel can be modified by isothermal holding in the high subcritical transformation range.' Since this treatment potentially leads to increased hardenability, limited testing has been completed to determine if the stabilization effects observed with this treatment can be used to advantage in the heat-treating of 4340 steel. As an index of the effects of the several austenitizing treatments on the hardenability of the steel, Jominy-type hardenability tests were completed for specimens 2.5 in. in diameter and 8 in. long. Since the steel studied is to be used at strength levels where notch sensitivity is of major concern, notch sensitivity after selected austenitizing treatments has been evaluated by notch tensile tests for several specimen sizes. The steel composition and the austenitizing treatments are given in Table I. The test specimens are presented in Fig. 1. The hardenability data are given in Fig. 2 and the notch tensile properties are presented in Fig. 3. The hardenability of the steel investigated when determined by use of the standard Jominy test specimen2 as high and remained essentially unchanged for the different austenitizing treatments. For the larger test specimen, as has been shown by other investigations," the characteristic hardenability indexes are changed and it becomes possible to isolate austenitizing treatments which promote maximum hardenability. The stepped austenitizing treatment promotes higher hardenability as is indicated in Fig. 2. The evaluation of notch sensitivity for very high strength steels is best accomplished by means of the notch tensile test. The experimental conditions of the test, however, modify the notch strengths measured, and in the present experimentation an effort was made to achieve a limiting notch condition by fixing the notch root radius at 0.001 in. while the specimen diameter was allowed to increase from 0.3 to 1.1 in.* For this root radius the notch strength, 0.3-in.-diam specimen, and this trend differs from that for the larger specimens. At the highest tempering temperatures the 1.1-ip.-diam specimens yield comparable results for the austenitizing treatments compared. L. S. Darken—It is indeed gratifying to find that the results of the two different methods here reported are in substantial agreement with each other and with the earlier work1 of two of the authors. Dr. R. P. Smith, of our laboratory, has been conducting some experiments at 1000°C to determine the diffusivity of carbon in austenite by a third method— the steady state method. This work, which will soon be reported, is far enough advanced that we can say it is in substantial agreement with that of the present authors. The only disparity which might be considered significant is in the high-carbon region, where we find that the diffusivity rises a little less steeply than indicated in fig. 8. F. E. Harris—The authors have presented an impressive arrangement of data concerning the diffusion of carbon in austenite. Of particular interest is the compilation, table IV, which is repeated in col. B of table V for direct comparison with values (col. A. table V) from a formulation using a single Q value of 31,000 cal as the activation energy for diffusion. This comparatively simple formulation has been used quite successfully in the practical application of calculating the carbon added (or removed) through the face in carburizing and decarburizing experiments, where the face concentrations are held quite constant for known times and temperatures. Literally hundreds of tests have been so checked where the computed and experimental values have varied by less than 5 pct. For higher temperatures, where proper carburizing data are hard to obtain, the diffusion couple is treated as a decarburization of the high-concentration bar and as a carburization of the low-carbon member. The analysis has been limited to a maximum of 1.40 wt pct carbon. The agreement between cols. A and B in table V may be considered fair, if a liberal viewpoint is taken. The use of a diffusion couple has one serious drawback, in that comparatively small amounts of carbon pass through planes of concentration close to those of the initial high-carbon and low-carbon members, and hence small errors become important. The spacing of wells in Long Beach oil field has caused much discussion from the earliest days of its development, on account of the closely drilled town-lot areas which have been as intensively developed as any productive areas in the world. The purpose of this paper is to present the results obtained from this type of development in comparison with the more widely spaced development in this field, now that a sufficient length of productive life has elapsed. The intensity of development in Long Beach is indicated by the fact that up to Sept. 1, 1929, there were 1736 wells either drilled or drilling. Of these 165 failed to get production and 121 were drilling. Thus 1450 wells have produced oil from an area of 1350 acres. Up to July 1, 1929, these wells produced a total of 35.5,047,913 barrels. Method Pursued Four groups of offset areas were chosen, in each group the wells in one area are widely spaced and in the other, closely spaced. The areas in each group are contiguous and the groups are spread over the field from the southeast end to the northwest, so that representative data are assured. The comparison has also been extended to shallow and deep zones, like zones in their respective areas being compared. Even though these productive zones are very thick, a fair picture of results is obtained, because the drilling of the wells in the two types of areas was concurrent in the different groups and, as a rule, the thickness of sand opened up at any one time was about the same. As deeper sands were found, wells in offset areas were deepened or new ones were drilled in both types of areas. The division of zones was made in the same manner in contiguous areas. The total cumulative production up to July 1, 1929, of the wells in their respective zones in each area was obtained. From these figures were computed the recovery per well, recovery per acre, acreage per well, and the ratios of these factors. Thus July 1, 1929, is the end of the period considered in all areas.

WORK on the effect of vacuum heat treatment of 0.040 in. diam sintered and wrought molybdenum wires has been sponsored by the Office of Naval Research at Battelle for the past several years. An electrical resistance furnace' capable of maintaining a vacuum of less than 0.1 micron of mercury at temperatures as high as 4000 °F was used for heat treating the wires. Early in the work, it was found that the introduction of a few microns pressure of oxygen into the furnace resulted in a rapid increase in the oxygen content of the wire specimens and the appearance of a discrete oxide phase. Subsequent elimination of the oxygen atmosphere caused the disappearance of the oxide phase. This was used to determine the solid solubility of oxygen in molybdenum over the temperature range of 2000" to 3000°F.2 It was observed that, with the disappearance of the oxide phase, the wires regained some ductility. Single-phased wires possessed from 5 to as much as 40 pct elongation in 2 in. Later, attention became centered on determining the cause of this wide range in ductility. Wires containing less than 0.002 pct C, less than 0.0007 pct 0, less than 0.0005 pct N, and less than 0.00003 pct H exhibited the erratic ductility noted above. These percentages represent approximately the limit of accuracy of presently available methods of analysis and thus it became apparent that chemical analysis would be of little help in the study. A number of possible explanations for the wide range in ductility were suggested during the course of the work. It was first suspected that variations in the grain size of the recrystallized wire specimens might be responsible. Wire from several lots of material was available. One of these lots tended to develop very large grains when recrystallized, the others all developed an ASTM grain size of 3 to 4 when heated above 2700°F. No correlation between grain size and ductility could be found. It was thought that back diffusion of oil from the diffusion pump might cause contamination of the wire, principally with carbon, but when wires were treated without cooling the cold trap in the pumping system,

ZINC, in its wrought form, is produced commercially in rolled strip, sheet, wire, rod and tubing. Wire has been made periodically, but due to the fact that slight drafts are necessary, the cost of production is greater than for the more common non-ferrous metals which are made into wire. Notwithstanding the cost, zinc wire has certain special uses for which it is particularly adaptable. Rod has been made both by rolling and extrusion; the product, however, has not indicated great commercial value. Tubing has been made from strip from time to time by forming a strip around a mandrel and either electrically or gas-welding a longitudinal joint. Recently a tube manufacturer has succeeded in making a fair quantity of this material. Its commercial adaptability is still to be determined but anyone who desires it can obtain quantities of the smaller sizes. Inasmuch as strip and sheet are commercially the most important, this paper will be devoted to these products. In the broader sense, zinc is not alloyed. That is, there are no combinations comparable to the various copper, aluminum and nickel alloys. It has been recognized for some time that the lead and cadmium occurring with commercial zinc have some effect on its properties and such alloys as may be said to exist are those made from zincs containing varying amounts of lead and cadmium with a relatively low iron content. The foreign rolled zinc will analyze higher in lead than the domestic grades. A representative foreign analysis will run 1.1 per cent. lead, 0.07 per cent. cadmium and 0.02 per cent. iron. The American grades vary from zinc approximating high grade and analyzing 0.08 per cent. lead, 0.002 per cent. cadmium and 0.015 per cent. iron, to the lower grades in which the lead will vary from 0.3 to 1.0 per cent., cadmium from 0.10 to 0.5 per cent. and the iron in the neighborhood of 0.02 percent. rr has long been suspected that sulphur has a small but finite solid solubility in iron, but up to the present more accurate data have been lacking. The survey given by Hansen' illustrates the divergence of data and opinions. Solubilities between 0.01 and 1.5 pct have been suggested, and opinions vary regarding the effects of temperature and phase transformations in iron on the sulphur solubility. The extent of solid solution and its variation with temperature might be expected to be an important factor in the occurrence of hot shortness in steel. Therefore, the object of the present investigation was to study this problem more systematically. It was furthermore hoped that solubility data for sulphur might contribute to an understanding of the factors which determine solid solubilities in general. Experimental Procedure The present work was based on the measurement of the chemical activity of sulphur in the solid solution by means of equilibrium with a mixture of hydrogen and hydrogen sulphide. When the solid solubility limit is reached, the sulphur activity in the iron becomes equal to that in the coexisting sulphide phase. A gas mixture of a controlled H,S/H, ratio was passed over pure metallic iron heated to a temperature in the range 900" to 1500". The amount of sulphur absorbed by the iron was determined by analysis, and from a plot of percentage of sulphur vs. gas composition the sulphur activity and the solubility limit were determined. As the rate of diffusion of sulphur in solid iron is very small, often several days were needed to be sure that equilibrium conditions had been established. To produce a gas flow with less than 1 pct H,S of constant composition for several days, was in itself a problem. The most satisfactory arrangement was obtained by a continuous synthesis of hydrogen sulphide from the elements. This was done in the part of the apparatus shown to the left in Fig. 1. Production of oil in Kentucky during 1938 was 5,566,154 bbl., showing a substantial increase over that of the year 1937; while in the gas areas development was somewhat retarded although deliveries were similar to those of 1937. In eastern Kentucky there was an oil increase during 1938 of over 150,000 bbl. above that of 1937. No new pools were developed and the increase was almost entirely due to the installation and expansion of secondary recovery methods and to the further development of the Maxon and Big Lime, Mississippian pools in Floyd and Martin Counties. With this development eastern Kentucky reached a level near that of 12 years previous, when the development of several large producing areas had just been completed. In eastern Kentucky during 1938 not over 50 gas wells were completed. Although the pipe-line deliveries were approximately the same as during 1937, development was retarded because of an excess of gas already developed and the intensive development of the Oriskany fields in West Virginia. In western Kentucky, in the part of the Illinois Basin lying in the state and known in Kentucky as the Western Coal Basin, the increase was due to the discovery of a number of new pools, the largest and the one producing the biggest wells being known as the Birk City pool. In fact, the discovery of this pool with the McClosky "sand" (St. Genevieve limestone) as the producing formation was in a large measure responsible for the increased activity, which in turn brought the discovery of the other areas. The discovery well in this pool is the C. T. Blackwell, which came in flowing 1000 bbl. daily from the McClosky sand at a depth of 1870 ft., drilled in April 22, 1938. This discovery, coming at a time when the major companies and many others were conducting an intensive leasing campaign and making extensive subsurface and geophysical surveys in the deeper part of the basin, resulted in renewed activity over the entire area and brought much new drilling. Thus, by the known theory of electrical images, p = pi [1+ */(*-7)] where The Multilayer Problem As the number of isotropic, homogeneous, horizontal layers increases, the difficulties of interpretation multiply. The theory becomes much more involved, and in view of the state of our knowledge, the general problem is virtually impossible of exact solution. However, certain types of multilayer problems can be worked out in terms of two-layer theory. Humme1,7 Pirson,8 Tagg,3 Watson,9 and others have pointed out the possibility of building up approximations of multilayer resistivity curves with suitable combinations of two-layer curves. Many three-layer curves can be constructed in this way to a good degree of accuracy, and special types of four-layer curves can be approximated. It is very likely that as the number of layers increases, the method of combination will not give good approximations except in very special cases. In the analysis of actual field data, the author has found that many obviously multilayer curves can be solved partially with a good degree of accuracy, using the theory that thin adjacent beds may be considered as one layer or zone, and applying two-layer theory to the extremities of the field curve.
