One of the deepest coal operations today is the Springhill No. 2 mine of Cumberland Railway & Coal Co., subsidiary of Dominion Coal Co. Ltd. Mining is now conducted at a slope distance of 14,000 ft, with 4400 vertical ft of cover. The record of Springhill No. 2 can be said to contain the history of bumps in the Province of Nova Scotia. The Springhill coal field forms part of the Cumberland field of Carboniferous age. There are seven mineable fields in the area, numbered in the order they were discovered. Mining has been carried on in all but the No. 4 and 5 seams, but present operations are confined to the No. 2. Fig. 1 shows a vertical section through the seams.

A hemispherical, constant volume drop with forced internal circulation was considered as a model approximating a real drop at a similar stage of formation Axially symmetric steady flow within a drop contaminated by surfactants was described by solving the full Navier-Stokes equations written in terms of a meridian plane stream function Rotational flow occurred inside the drop above a computed Reynolds number of 5.8, and the change in interfacial flow caused by imposing a surface-tension gradient at the surface had a significant effect on the internal flow Although the work is quite fundamental in nature, the rotational flow described in the paper is responsible for much of the bulk transport of solute to the interface in hydrometallurgical processes such as solvent extraction.

Conquista, the uranium mining and milling complex owned jointly by Continental Oil Co. and Pioneer Nuclear, Inc., has begun operations in Falls City, Texas. The mill has been designed to produce 1.5 million lb of U3O, from 600,000 tpy of ore mined. Currently, the plant processes a maximum 2000 tpd of ore. Mine Planning Texas ore deposits are small and scattered in comparison to other uranium mining districts. Those to be mined at Conquista range from a few acres to more than 100 acres in size. Ore thickness ranges from a few inches to over 15 ft, and depth from less than 20 ft to more than 170 ft below ground surface. Distance from the mill ranges up to 35 mi.

VARIOUS'-3 reports on the electroslag remelting process refer to the "thin skin of slag" existing around the slag pool and the solidifying ingot, but none considers the various mechanisms by which this layer forms and thus influences the surface quality of the ingot. A vertical section4,5 of the Cao-CaF2-Al2O3 diagram is shown in Fig. 1 between CaF2 and 6Al2.CaO3 From this, it is seen that a typical "70:30" CaF2:A1a3 slag will solidify to produce 6Al2O3.CaO primary phase in a eutectic matrix. THERE is a considerable lack of data on thermody-namic properties of hard-metal alloys. Only two papers 1,2 give mean values of specific heat in an unknown temperature range; more recently the author3 gave more detailed information on the mean specific heat in the temperature range from 20" to -190° C.. EXPERIMENTAL 1) Method—Experimental procedure followed a method suggested by Oelsen and coworkers.4 It requires samples of some 100 g of weight. The time of measurement is prolonged (30 min) but one run allows the measurement of a lot of positions on the heat-content curve. Results4 were found to be in good agreement with "best values" given by kelley,5 Kubaschewsky and Evans,6 etal.

The use of phosphates was studied as a way of purifying acidic copper leach solutions for direct electrowinning. The addition of 2.5 gpl phosphorus to plant solutions originally containing 6.25 gpl Fe (III) at pH 2 0 reduced the iron concentration by one half. Under identical conditions, but without phosphorous additions, the iron concentration was reduced by less than 1 gpl. Any residual phosphorous had no undesirable impact on electrowinning. The concentration ratio of Fe (III) to phosphorous which provides maximum iron elimination was determined. Higher ratios bring about a redissolution of the iron precipitate. Several ways of controlling iron with phosphates are discussed. These take advantages of more rapid and complete iron precipitation at lower pH levels.

US underground mine production of nonfuel minerals was 153 million tons of crude ore in 1971, according to a recent US Bureau of Mines report compiled by Dravo Corp. Underground capacity includes all nonfuel mineral commodities and is distributed into three general categories: (1) metallic ores; (2) nonmetallic ores; and (3) construction materials, such as clay, sandstone, and limestone. All three categories are produced by a combination of open-pit and underground methods. While US underground mining represents only 5.9% of total domestic capacity, it is significant in the types of products produced. Domestic supplies of potash, trona, A lead, zinc, sulfur, and fluorspar are almost exclusively recovered from underground mines, as well as a significant portion of the gold, silver, molybdenum, and salt supply.

In this research the possibility of pelletizing high grade fluorsoar fines or flotation concentrates with the use of calcined colemanite as binder is investigated, and the room temperature and elevated temperature strengths of these pellets are compared with those of pellets which are obtained by using bentonite as binder. Pellets of 10-12 mm. size and having 10% calcined colemanite showed a much higher room temperature strength than those containing 5% benonite, both being endurated at 1000°C for 15 minutes. However, when the same batch of pellets were tested at elevated temperatures of 250º to 500°C, bentonite gave better results. X-ray tests showed that in the pellets endurated at 1000°C for 15 minutes the original crystal structure of fluorite mineral is preserved.

As recently as the mid-1930's, steam and rail haulage were still the primary means of moving large quantities of rock. However, 2- to 5-ton standard on-highway trucks were beginning to be used in the mining industry's efforts to lower haulage costs. It was quickly obvious that rubber-tired equipment was more flexible, faster and more maneuverable. The trend towards haulage trucks had begun. Now while savings were being realized, the severe operating conditions encountered in open pit operations proved too much for the lightly constructed frames, gasoline engines and highly inflated tires. As a result, a few years later, the first 10 to 15-ton, two-axle heavy duty trucks were designed specifically to operate under off-highway conditions.

The coal picture in 1955 was much brighter than in 1954, when the tonnage produced dropped to the 1939 level. Bituminous coal and lignite production are expected to approach 465 million tons, against 392 million tons in 1954, an increase of about 19 pct. On the other hand, the production of anthracite declined about 7 pct to some 25 million tons. There was marked improvement in coal consumption in all industrial lines except railroads. At the end of November 1955 the largest consumer, electric power utilities, had used about 126 million tons, an increase of some 22 million tons over the previous year. Sidbec-Normines operates six large iron ore concentrate regrinding mills in parallel and open circuit at its Port-Cartier pelletizing plant. Grinding kinetics in these mills were characterized for slurry densities varying between 70 and 89% solids, using a lumped parameter size discrete model. Optimum grinding conditions were encountered at 83.5 to 84% solids. Higher densities decreased the normalized selection function and increased slurry short-circuiting, yielding a sharply coarser mill discharge. At lower slurry densities, the normalized selection function decreased and the mill discharge coarsened slightly. The grinding kinetic model predicted particle size distributions within the mill. These were found to vary significantly from the feed to the discharge end. This is likely to cause nonlinear breakage kinetics.

THE Blueberry mine is about 10 miles west of Ishpeming, Marquette County, Michigan. The property consists of about 2000 acres in sets. 3, 4 and 5, T. 47, N.R. 28W. and sets. 32, 33 and 34, T. 48, N.R. 28W., and, excepting one intervening 80-acre tract, contains the iron formation for a length of about 2 1/4 miles. The property is traversed by State Highway M-28 and is served by three railways, the Chicago & Northwestern, the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic, and the Lake Superior & Ishpeming. The Northwestern transports the ore to a dock at Escanaba; the other railways, to Mar¬quette. Ore for Chicago goes via Escanaba and that for Lower Lake ports, as Detroit, Cleveland, and Buffalo, via Marquette.

The North American Coal Corp. Increasing demand for coal, stimulated by the national energy shortage, and complicating and often conflicting, demands by government and ecology groups for better land reclamation methods continued to propel advances in surface mining technology during 1974. To meet current demands for coal (estimated at more than 700 million t for 1975 and 1.5 billion t in 19851, equipment manufacturers and coal operators concentrated on increasing the productivity of all surface mining equipment. The trend towards larger equipment, particularly in overburden removal, loading, and haulage machinery, prevailed during the year, notwithstanding the perennial debate over the economics and practicality of using large, inflexible equipment. Increasingly, the industry called on computers to monitor productivity and help design more efficient production systems

Objective stockpile goals have been met for antimony, bismuth, fluorspar, and iridium, while those for bauxite, cadmium, copper, lead, zinc, manganese, mercury, platinum, tin, and vanadium have not, according to a report by the Munitions Board. Total materials under inventory and contract represent about 78 pct of entire stockpile goals, the report stated. Frobisher, Ltd., of Canada has been given permission to survey power possibilities in certain lake and river basins in the Yukon believed to have a potential of 5 million he. Canadian Resources Minister, Robert Winters, also announced that his Government has rejected a bid by Aluminum Co. of America concerning use of Canadian waters to power a proposed Alaska aluminum project. Alcoa is reported hopeful of resuming negotiations.

Increasing urbanization and industrial activity require increased supplies of sand and gravel. This means expanded surface mining and despoiled land near population centers. Highly competitive land use demands justify serious consideration of premining planning for multiple land use and reclamation concurrent with mining, 1-5 Formulating solutions to environmentally and economically sound uses requires a comprehensive approach based on properties of the natural resource base--geology, soils, and water. A study of sand and gravel mining within Pleistocene-Holocene fluvial deposits in Colorado County, Texas (Fig. I) illustrates how physical limitations imposed by the resource base are determined.6,7 Data from drillers logs of water wells, test boreholes, field observations, and laboratory analyses are used to evaluate these physical controls.

The recent dedication of Magma Copper Co.'s San Manuel, Ariz., electrolytic copper refinery and rod casting plant marks the culmination of a three year, $250 million expansion-modernization program. The new facilities will eventually permit an annual production of 200,000 tons of marketable copper for direct sale to fabricators. The Newmont Mining Corp. subsidiary will produce and market continuous cast 5/16 in. copper redraw rod, full plate cathode copper and sheared cathode plate under its own brand name. Among the four largest in the nation, the new refinery and plant, was built at a cost of $34 million and will be fully automated. In addition, all materials used in the plant will be recycled and no waste, discard or emissions will occur.

The extraction ratio approach to pillar design in flat seams is based on a mathematically exact analysis that is a reasonable physical approximation to room-and-pillar layouts in many instances. The essentials of the approach are reviewed and then mathematically approximate formulas for pillar design in inclined seams of arbitrary dip are proposed. Detailed numerical analysis of stress about a typical 5 entry, 4 pillar panel at dips of 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 degrees at low and high extraction ratios show that the proposed inclined seam extraction ratio formulas for pillar normal and shear stresses, although conservative, have an accuracy quite adequate for engineering purposes. Appropriate pillar safety factors for compressive and shear failure and a safety criterion for overturning are specified.
