THE conductivity of copper wire is of prime importance to the electrical industry and consequently to the copper refiner and wire manufacturer. Annealed copper wire has a higher conductivity than hard-drawn wire, but, on the other hand, its tensile strength is lower. In an attempt to explain the reasons for these changes in property or at least to study the conditions existing in these two types of copper wire, the experiments described here were carried on in the Department of Metallurgy of the Michigan College of Mining and Technology. This is only a partial and preliminary report on some of the work done to date on a research program of which the object is an intensive study of copper. It is offered with the hope that, though it is not an exposition of the most rigorous of conclusions, the general trend of inferences which may be drawn will be of value and interest.

I. INTRODUCTION. THE central power-station. of the De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., was designed and built under my supervision about five years ago. Since no detailed description of this plant has ever appeared, it may possess sufficient interest to warrant its publication, even at this late date. Although some additions may have been Blade to the plant, the following account, prepared from my notes, and accurate up to May, 1905 (at which time I severed my connection with the De Beers Com¬pany), will, I think, be found substantially correct. Certain local conditions governing the design of this plant should be stated first. If. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS. The climate is hot and dry. The .region around Kimberley is arid and water is very scarce. The supply obtained from the mines contains so much material in solution that it is unfit for use in boilers or condensers (although tests recently made with a water-softening plant, built by Hans Reisert, of Germany, would indicate that water thus treated is suitable for boilers). And the amount of water required for concentrating about 30,000 tons of ore per day is so large that the question of adequate water-supply for this power-station had to be carefully considered. The rainy season extends from December to April, and the rainfall averages about 15 in. per year. Droughts are frequent; and in some years there is scarcely any rain at all. The water-supply for the town of Kimberley is brought from the Vaal river, 16 miles distant, and pumped into town by a private water company. The charge made for water, which is

They were noted, not with a view to investigating the point discussed by Mr. Clark, but in course of a test on a working scale to determine the com parative saving from a given free-milling ore on copper and silvered plates respectively. In every case the bullion assayed was the result of a separate clean-up on a considerable quantity of ore. The ore varied widely in grade and in other respects, but the runs bracketed in the table were made at the same time, in adjoining batteries, and on similar types of ore. Nonsteady-state flow of slightly compressible liquids in porous media of non-uniform properties has been the subject of a number of recent studies. Most of these studies considered one-dimensional flow in systems with cylindrical geometry and with the properties of the porous medium varying with radial distance only. A. Houpeurt' studied the problem in its general form by examining the solutions of the differential equation, In Eq. 1, the permeability k and the porosity + are arbitrary functions of radial distance. Houpeurt concluded that, except for special forms of the functions k and the problem is not well suited for mathematical treatment, but lends itself to high-speed digital computation. Carslaw and Jaeger' discussed the solution of Eq. 1 for the case in which the permeability varies as a power of the radial distance. P. Albert3 studied analytically the pseudo steady-state solutions in systems of finite radial extent and non-uniform properties. He also obtained some numerical solutions for nonsteady-state flow using a high-speed computer. William Hurst4 examined the interference pressure drop due to a point sink located in an infinite system consisting of two permeability regions in series. In this case, the permeability changed at a radial distance r from the point sink. INTERFERENCE BETWEEN OIL FIELDS IN A NON-UNIFORM AQUIFER The interference pressure drop for oil fields located in an extensive aquifer of uniform properties is discussed in a number of places in the literature. This work considers the interference pressure drop for oil fields located in a non-uniform extensive aquifer comprising two regions of different properties as shown in Fig. 1. Region I of the aquifer extends from which is the radius of Oil Field A, to ar,,, where a>1. It has permeability k,, porosity +, and effective compressibility c,. Oil Field B is located in Region II which extends from ar, to infinity and has different properties from those of Region I, but the same formation thickness h. Region II has permeability k2, porosity and effective compressibility c2. The choice of this type of aquifer should not imply that it is of frequent occurrence. It is chosen primarily to illustrate the effects of non-uniform aquifer properties on oilfield interference. It is of interest to point out that a non-uniform radial aquifer in which both the permeability and the porosity are inversely proportional to the radial distance can be treated in a manner similar to a linear aquifer of uniform properties. The situation where only the permeability varies as the inverse of the radial distance is also amenable to analytical treatment. Both aquifers behave quite differently from a radial aquifer with uniform properties so far as the water influx and the interference pressure drop are concerned. METHOD OF SOLUTION The expression for the interference pressure drop in Oil Field B due to a constant rate of water influx in Oil Field A is developed in the Appendix. This is accomplished by the simultaneous solution of two partial differential equations describing the pressure in Regions I and 11. This title introduces the subject I wish to describe to my fellow members, very few of whom, I 'hope, have ever had as much trouble with the smelting of ore containing much zinc, either in the lead blast furnace or the matting furnace, as circumstances have forced upon me: First, for several years in Leadville, Colo., after the sulphide ores containing zinc had been developed with greater depth and were sold to the intereats with which I was connected for smelt-ing in the blast furnace for the recovery of the lead, silver, and gold; then, in New Mexico and Arizona, where the principal source of ore supply for our custom smelter was from miners who sent most of their product in the form of concentrates, which we briquetted and smelted in the blast furnace, producing a matte containing copper, silver, and gold, for which we were paid; together with some zinc and lead, which was penalized if in excess of a maximum base set by the refinery to which we sold our copper matte; last, but not least, my experience in Shasta county, Gal., where for the sake of recovering $13 per ton value in copper, silver, and gold, I have smelted ore containing as high as 40 per cent. zinc (the last 18,951 tons smelted averaged 15 3/10 per cent. zinc) which we not only lost, but which it cost us money to lose. After such an experience, and knowing that, instead of being worth only $13 per ton, such 15 per cent. zinc ore should be worth about $30, including zinc at the present market value, the question of recovering the zinc in a profitable manner from such ore became very interesting to me. During several years' time I sent samples, of from 5 to 1,200 lb. each, to be tested by the different best-known zinc-recovery plants, and experimented with several processes proposed by others for the treatment of such ore, with but little encouragement, until I

ThOUGH at present there is a wide range of possibilities for the quantitative determination of preferred orientations, pole figures of identical specimen material have not been determined by different methods as yet.''' In this paper a comparison of (Ill), (200), and (220) pole figures is presented which were obtained from a 95 pct cold-rolled high-purity cop- per sheet (99.9998 pct Cu), by three different methods. The three methods are: a) The combined X-ray reflection-transmission technique of plane samples by schulz3 and Decker, Asp, and Harker. 4 A Siemens texture goniometer was used. WHEN work was begun in September, 1910, on the rock excavation for the foundation of the gigantic dam at Valhalla, N. Y., which is to convert Kensico lake into an important storage reservoir of the Catskill Aqueduct system, one of the first steps taken by the contractor, H. S. Kerbaugh, Inc., was the development of a quarry to supply the stone needed in the construction work.The importance of a bountiful supply of suitable rock in an accessible location is apparent when it is considered that nearly a million cubic yards of cyclopean masonry will be contained in the completed structure, not to mention dimension and facing stones, concrete blocks, and mass concrete. The dam structure will be over 1800 ft. long and about 170 ft. above the present river bed. However, for a distance of some 800 ft., it will be carried down to solid ledge rock, which will make the finished structure about 300 ft. in maximum height. It will be about 200 ft. thick at the base and directly beneath the coping it will be 28 ft. thick. This dam will raise the reservoir surface 110 ft. above old Kensico lake. The reservoir capacity will be 29,000,000,000 gal.-equal to New York's total needs for over two months. The contract price for this work is nearly $8,000,000 and is second only in amount to the cost, over $12,600,000, of the Ashokan Reservoir work. Fig. 1 is a view of the dam site.

PYROPHYLLITE, first identified as soapstone,1 later as agalmatolite,2 and finally as pyrophyllite,3 has been known to occur in North Carolina for more than 130 years and has been produced intermittently in commercial amounts for the past 100 years. Pyrophyllite mining, however, has become a major industry in North Carolina only during the past 25 years. North Carolina and California are the chief producing states. Current annual production averages 125,000 tons, of which slightly more than 90 pct comes from North Carolina. Distribution and Geologic Setting: All known pyrophyllite deposits in North Carolina are associated with rocks of the Carolina Slate Belt,4 which is composed of a vast series of metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary materials, occurring as two zones extending in a northeast-southwest direction across the state. The larger of these zones, lying in the central Piedmont region, varies from 8 to 50 miles wide. The smaller zone lies along the eastern edge of the Piedmont region and is partly covered by coastal plain sediments.

Many factors influence the results of hydraulic fracturing to stimulate well productivity. Most of these factors have been studied and their effects discussed in the literature. However, the movement of sand through the crack during fracturing has received little consideration. Exactly where the sand goes in the fracture, how it gets there, and how this might influence results have not been studied, judging from published reports. To get an answer to some of these questions we have studied sand movement through a simulated crack segment in the laboratory. Although the work is preliminary, we have answered some questions about sand movement in a semiquantitative sense. We are reporting our results at this time in the hope of stimulating interest and further study in this important aspect of fracturing. LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of equipment used in this study. A segment of a vertical crack 0.25-in. wide was formed between two Plexiglas plates, and movement of sand in fluid through the crack was observed under various conditions. Sand and fluid were injected into the crack at constant rates. The top and bottom of the crack were closed so that the fluid flowed horizontally. Because of gravity most of the sand settled to the bottom before moving very far through the crack. If the fluid velocity exceeded a certain critical value, then all the sand injected was washed on through the crack even though it had settled to the bottom. When the fluid velocity was less than this value when sand injection was started, most of the sand which settled in the crack remained in place until enough of the area open to fluid flow was blocked by the settled sand to increase the fluid velocity to the critical value.. At this point all injected sand moved on through the crack even though it settled to the lower portion of the moving fluid section. All sand previously settled remained in place. When fluid velocity was increased at this paint by increasing fluid injection rate (without also increasing sand injection rate), some of the previously settled sand was washed out until enough area was open to flow that the velocity dropped to the critical value. Conversely, when the fluid velocity was decreased by decreasing the fluid injection rate (without changing the rate of sand injection), additional sand would settle until the critical velocity was again attained. In short, the critical velocity is an equilibrium value which the system will automatically seek, if possible. The equilibrium (or critical) velocity was measured under several conditions. The results of these measurements are shown in Pig. 2 where the equilibrium velocity is shown as a function of the amount of sand injected per minute. The points falling in the shaded band shown in Fig. 2 were obtained with water. The higher viscosities were obtained by adding CMC (carboxymethylcellu-lose). Data indicate that the equilibrium velocity is not very sensitive to sand size or transport fluid viscosity, or to sand injection rate (except at very low rates). Points connected by the solid CUrve in Fig. 2 were obtained with water and 20- to 40-mesh steel shot. The equilibrium velocity is apparently fairly sensitive to difference in density between particle and fluid. Only one run was made with a gelled fluid and that was gelled water at zero sand injection rate as shown in Fig. 2. DURING the production of tin plate a thin layer of FeSn2, is formed at the interface between the steel sheet and the protective tin coating. Because excessive amounts of this alloy layer are undesirable, the kinetics of its formation is a subject of interest in the tin-plate industry. A recent study of this subject at our laboratory uncovered a relationship which should be of general interest to anyone studying kinetics of reactions in metallic systems. It had been previously concluded that, at any given temperature in the range 175" to 330°C, the Fe-Sn alloy layer would have a parabolic growth rate.1,2 However, our studies showed that this rule apparently holds only when the tin plate is heated very slowly to the "reaction" temperature; when the tin plate is rapidly heated, considerably different growth rates occur. An example of this effect of heating rate on growth behavior is contained in the accompanying results of alloy-layer growth measurements at 240°C in oil baths stirred at 10,500, 1800, and 0 rpm. The heating curves for these three conditions are given in Fig. 1, and the growth data are presented in Fig. 2. With the rapid heating rate, provided by the stirring at 10,500 rpm, the alloy layer had three distinct stages of growth. In the initial stage, which persisted well beyond the time required to heat the tin plate to bath temperature, the alloy layer formed very rapidly. The growth followed a rate law of the form w = ktn where n > 1. This initial stage was followed by a growth-retardation stage of about 50-sec duration in which little additional alloy was formed. In the third stage the growth again followed a rate law of the form w = ktn, but here « =0.3. With the intermediate heating rate provided by stirring at 1800 rpm, the three-stage nature was less pronounced and the slope of the third stage increased (i.e., n > 0.3). With the slow heating rate provided by the unstirred oil bath, the alloy layer grew in two stages. The initial rapid-growth stage persisted only until the specimen was heated to bath temperature, no growth retardation was observed, and the slope of the main portion of the plotted data was greater than in the stirred baths, having a value of almost 0.5. Similar results were obtained for other bath temperatures in the range 200" to 300°C. This effect of heating rate on growth behavior may be due to changes in the rate of nucleation of FeSn, crystallites. The iron and tin are in contact from the onset of heating. Thus the initial formation of FeSn, occurs not at the "reaction" temperature but rather while the tin plate is being heated to that temperature. Because nucleation is in general temperature-dependent, different heating rates could cause different over-all nucleation rates, which in turn could cause different growth behaviors. A more detailed discussion of the growth of Fe-Sn alloy layer and the effect of heating rate will be published shortly.

One of the most important requirements to be met by any coal producer is delivery of size consists tailored to specific applications. Generally these specifications include a minimum as well as a maximum size limit. The customers of a major Indiana coal producer noticed that some shipments of sized coal contained a large proportion of undersize pieces. Also, in these shipments, the pieces which remained within the specified limits were cracked and, when handled, crumbled readily. The producer, certain that these shipments had been properly sized at the tipple, suspected that degradation had occurred in transit. The Indiana Geological Survey was requested to examine the coal from one of these shipments to attempt to determine the cause of breakage. Two basic facts about coal and coal seams led to the employment of petrographic techniques in this investigation. First, all coal seams consist of accumulations of diverse organic and inorganic constituents; and second, most coal breakage, either desirable or undesirable, can be attributed to the inherent weakness of some of these constituents or to poor adhesion between certain constituents. Analyses of degraded coal Sampling: Samples were secured from 2 stock piles of 2-by 4-inch coal in a dealer's yard. The coal in both piles had received the same treatment from mining to storage, although it had been mined and shipped on two different days. The size consist of one pile, however, appeared smaller than that of the other. The sample from the degraded pile is referred to as the slack sample, and the other is called the unslack sample. Size analyses: In order to determine the actual size consist, the samples were screened, with a minimum of rough handling, on square 2-inch, 1-inch, 1/2-inch, and 12-mesh screens. It is assumed that 100 percent of the 2-by 4-inch coal is retained on a 2-inch round screen at the tipple. Analyses of several loads at the tipple indicate that approximately 26 percent of the 2- by 4-inch coal, 100 percent of which was assumed held on a 2-inch round screen, passed through a 2-inch square screen. Twenty-six percent may be taken as the normal difference between round and square screens. Results of the analyses of stockpile coal are shown in Table 1. Cumulative percent versus size are plotted on a Rosin-Rammler chart as Figure 1. Both samples approximately follow normal size distribution; this indicates that breakage is not size preferential and also that the samples are representative of the stockpiles. Although both samples exhibit the same general size distribution, the median size of the slack sample is considerably smaller than that of the unslack sample. Fifty-five percent of the unslack sample was undersize (29 percent greater than the normal 26 percent difference), and 83 percent of the slack sample was undersize (57 percent greater than the normal 26 percent difference). Both piles contained a greater percentage than normal of undersize coal; this indicates that they were both affected by degradation, but to a different degree. Bedding-plane analyses: Coal, because of its laminated nature, will break preferentially along bedding planes, especially where adjacent constituents are poorly cemented to each other. THIS paper does not deal with all sands used in the glass industry in Missouri; it covers only that used in the plate-glass factory at Crystal City. However, it is probably safe to say that other sands, pro- [ ] duced throughout the state for this purpose, are of identical nature. The glass sand used in Missouri is commonly called the St. Peter deposit, which is ascribed to the Ordovician Rock series in the form of sandstone. This St. Peter deposit, aside from a few small outliers, covers a large area of eastern Missouri. It forms, through a broad curve, the northeast margin of the typical Ozark region between Cape Girardeau on the southeast and Mineola, Montgomery County, on the northwest. The belt is extremely irregular, varying from one to ten miles in width; its length is 150 miles in a straight line. [ ] The outcrop near the entrance to the Crystal City mine appears in the form of a sandstone bluff approximately 30 ft. high, running along Plattin Creek (Fig. , I). Above the sand rock an overburden of Joachim limestone appears, which, thickens to nearly 300 ft. and forms the hill commonly called Buck Knob. Test holes, where drilled at various points and the drillers' log indicate that the St. Peter deposit ranges in thickness from 63 to 71 feet. PROPERTIES OT THE ST.
