In the course of a study of the electronic and thermodynamic properties of Pb-Se alloys it was found necessary to have an accurate knowledge of the phase diagram. However, the literature is in disagreement as to whether or not a monotectic reaction occurs in the lead rich portion of the phase diagram. Pelabonl reported only a two-phase region consisting of lead-rich liquid and solid PbSe extending from almost pure lead to the compound PbSe, and gave the melting point of PbSe as 1065°C. The data of Friedrich and Leroux2 are in general agreement with this type of diagram, with the melting point of the compound being 1088°C. However, Nozato and Igaki by inverse rate thermal analysis observed a monotectic reaction isotherm exlacing at 860°C with a monotectic composition of 20.5 at. pct Se. The miscibility gap in the liquid state extends from 7.5 to 20.5 at. pct Se. Hansen and Anderko4 accepted Nozato and Igaki's phase diagram in the region of the lead-rich monotectic. To reinvestigate this portion of the phase diagram, both thermal analysis and metallographic examination of various compositions were performed. The thermal analysis apparatus was constructed according to the specifications of the National Bureau of Standards. A t/t-l pct Rh thermocouple was calibrated against the melting point of copper (NBS), zinc (NBS), and antimony (A. D. Mackay), the emf being measured with a Rubicon Type B potentiometer sensitive to lpv. The absolute accuracy of the thermal analysis obtainable with this system is ± 0.5oC. Starting materials were semiconductor grade lead and selenium purchased from the American Smelting and Refining Co. Both elements were 99.999 pct pure with only trace impurities detected upon spectroscopic examination. One hundred galloys were sealed in quartz crucibles with a central thermocouple well under a vacuum of less than 1 p. This procedure prevented any composition change due to vaporization during the run. Cooling curves were obtained on the alloys listed in Table I. Data was taken by the direct method at cooling rates ranging between 1/2 to 2°C per min. The alloys were heated well above the liquidus and shaken vigorously to insure homogeneity. No evidence of an arrest indicative of the monotectic reaction was observed, and the two-phase region reported by Pelabonl and Friedrich and Leroux? was confirmed in general, although our data give higher liquidus temperatures than Friedrich and Leroux. The melting point of stoichiomet-ric PbSe determined for two different samples was 1080.7 0.5oC. The results of this investigation are compared with Nozato and Igaki's data in Fig. 1. To Complement the thermal analysis data, an 86 at. pct Pb specimen was examined microscopically. This composition was in the center of the miscibility gap reported by Nozato and Igaki.3 The alloy was heated to 1000°C, held for 1/2 hr, and water quenched. The specimen was polished using standard metallographic techniques for lead. The alloy was etched with an acetic-nitric acid etchant for 10 min at 45°C. Microscopic examination did not indicate the existence of two separate layers or solidified droplets imbedded in a matrix, as would be expected if a miscibility gap were present. The mi-crostructure shown in Fig. 2 consists of uniformly dispersed, dendritic PbSe in a lead-rich matrix.

DISCUSSION OF RESULTS The qualitative correlation between low-temperature ductility and prior high-temperature creep strain in nickel obtained in this investigation confirms the result obtained on high-purity brass by Chen and Machlin. However, the quantitative effect is much smaller in nickel. Comparison can be made on the basis of a prior high-temperature strain that is a certain percentage of the total high-temperature elongation to rupture. In the research of Chen and machlin, the prior high-temperature strain of 1/2 pct equaled 8.5 pct of the total high-temperature elongation at rupture. For nickel, in our experiments, 8.5 pct of 21.2 pct equals 1.8 pct. For eh = 1.8 pct, the loss in ductility in percent equals x 100 = b.5 pct. Schmatz IRON-aluminum alloys have gained much interest in the past few years for use as a base material for elevated-temperature alloys because of their excel- high-temperature strain the loss in low-temperature ductility is 8.5 pct for nickel as compared to 60 pct for pure a, brass. It is also interesting to note the observation that in nickel the low-temperature fractures, even at the most extreme high-temperature pre-strain, were partly trans crystalline and partly intercrystalline. In the case of a brass, these fractures were completely intercrystalline. According to the data on the percent of the grain boundary area that is cracked, at 22 pct high-temperature elongation, about 12.5 pct of the grain boundary area does not carry load. Thus, the inter-crack areas are carrying a stress that is about 11 pct higher than the nominal stress. A simple model predicts that the overall elongation, which is primarily the elongation in the bulk of the specimen, will correspond to the nominal stress when the stress in the intercrack area equals the tensile strength. Quantitatively this model predicts the equation The form of this equation will agree with that found if the strain-hardening exponent, n, equals unity. Actually this model is too gross an approximation to yield good quantitative results. The question naturally arises as to whether in ordinary hot-working, such as hot-rolling, intercrys-talline cracks are introduced that affect the low-temperature properties. It appears that the answer is that such a possibility cannot be overlooked, if the hot-working induces tensile stresses at temperatures above the equicohesive temperature and if the material tends to be notch sensitive at low temperature. In the present note we present thermal-analysis data for the liquidus curve from 0 to 76 at. pct Se and for the selenium-rich monotectic reaction in the Pb-Se system. We have previously reported that no expey-imental eviderzce was found for a lead-rich monotectic reaction, at -860°C with a monotectic composition of -20.5 at. pct Se, as found by Nozato and Igaki.&apos; Our additional data substantiated this earlier finding and extended the composition range studied. The alloys were prepared from semiconductor -grade lead and selenium purchased from the American Smelting and Refining Co. Both elements were 99.999+ wt pct pure as determined by the supplier. The impurities for lead were Fe (1 ppm) and Cu & ppm) while for selenium the impurities were Cu (< 1 ppm), As (< 1 ppm), Te (1 ppm), and C1 (<1 ppm). The general procedures used for thermal analysis were those specified by the National Bureau of Standards. A Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple calibrated against the freezing points of zinc and copper purchased from the National Bureau of Standards and antimony (99.985 pct pure) purchased from A. D. Mackay, New York, was used for all the thermal analysis. The thermocouple electromotive force was measured with a Rubicon Type B potentiometer used in conjunction with a galvanometer with a sensitivity of 0.5 pV (mm) -&apos;. The absolute accuracy of this thermal-analysis system was *0.5"C. One-hundred-gram alloys of the desired composition were sealed in quartz crucibles, with a central thermocouple well, at a pressure of less than 10"1 Torr. The alloys were initially heated well above the liquidus curve and shaken vigorously to insure homogeneity. Cooling curves were then taken by the direct method at cooling rates ranging from -0.5" to 1.5"C (min)-&apos;. The phase diagram from 0 to 76 at. pct Se as determined by direct thermal analysis is shown in Fig. l.* An extrapolation of the selenium-rich portion of the liquidus curve to the monotectic reaction isotherm (678.3"C) gave a value of 76.1 at. pct Se for the monotectic composition. A tabulation of all the thermal-analysis data is given in Table I. For the sake of clarity the points for the 49.00 and 49.16 at. pct Se alloys were not drawn on this phase diagram, see Table I. for the lead-rich monotectic reaction found by Nozato and Igaki.&apos; This result was further substantiated by the fact that none of twelve lead-rich alloys, see Table I, examined for this monotectic reaction exhibited a thermal arrest in the temperature range (849" to 863°C) cited by Nozato and Igaki for the lead-rich monotectic reaction. Hence, our results tend to support the earlier qualitative work of ~elabon&apos; and Friedrich and ~eroux" in the 0 to 50 at. pct portion of the phase diagram, though the selenium-rich monotectic composition and reaction isotherm temperature were in agreement with the approximate values (75 at. pct Se and 672" to 680°C) given by Nozato and ~~aki. &apos;

I. INTRODUCTION. AT the Seventy-sixth meeting of the Institute, held in New York, N. Y., February, 1899, I presented a, paper on this subject entitled, Coal-Cutting Machinery,&apos; which has become somewhat out of date, in view of the decade&apos;s development in this feature of the coal-minim industry. It should be explained that the present paper is limited to the use of mining-machines in bituminous mines. Practically all of the anthracite mined is ?shot from the solid," no undercutting being done. Anthracite-mining is therefore not considered in the statistics or other references. The statistical record as compiled by the United States Geological Survey shows that in 1898, the year preceding the presentation of my former paper, there were 32,413,144 short tons of coal undercut by the use of machines. In 1907 the machine-mined coal-product amounted to 138,547,823 short tons. In sympathy with the general decrease in coal-production during 1908, the output of machine-mined coal decreased to 123,183,334 short tons, but the proportion of machine-mined coal to the total output, nevertheless, showed an increase, from 35.1 per cent in 1907 to 37 per cent in 1908. In 1898 only 19.5 per cent. of the total product was undercut by the use of machines. The number of undercutting-machines in use in the bituminous mines of the United States has increased from 2,622 in 1898 to 11,144 in 1907, and to 11,569 in 1908. The total production of bituminous coal in the United States in 1908 was almost exactly double that of 1898, while the machine- * Published by permission of the Director of the U. S. I. INTRODUCTION. THESE impurities are perhaps the most important things in steel-especially steel made by the oxidation processes-the effect of which has not been at least approximately determined. By oxidation processes I mean the Bessemer and Siemens-Martin, during which the metalloids in the charge are removed by oxidation. It has been truly said that it is a clear advantage to have a new name for a new thing. To secure this and to economize space, let us adopt the name sonim (plural sonims) to designate the solid non-metallic impurities existing in steel or other metal. I would define a sonim as a solid non-metallic portion of matter existing as an impurity in metal. A piece of sand, brick, clay, or such material, imbedded in metal, would be considered as a foreign body, not as an impurity, and therefore not a sonim. The studies of sonims of which the results have been published hitherto, have been made chiefly or wholly on finished or at least on cold steel, without much, if any, regard to the specific methods by which the steel was made. While many of the results so obtained are valuable, they give little help in determining the cause, effect, or cure of the disease. It is not enough, in such a study, to know merely the commercial name of the process; for within the field of each process lies a great number of possible variations, each of which will yield a result differing in some respect from all others; and the control of sonims is particularly dependent. on the metallurgical treatment of the metal, because of the inability of analytical chemistry to throw much light on their presence, condition, and effect, as they usually occur in commercial steels. The microscope aids more, perhaps, than chemistry in their study.

Recent start-up of the Pinto Valley mine and mill is expected to add to domestic copper mine capacity by some 62,500 tpy. Owned and operated by Cities Service Co.&apos;s Miami Operations, the complex lies approximately 5% miles west of Miami, Ariz. The estimated $100- million project, the largest single construction project ever undertaken by Cities Service, includes the Pinto Valley open pit mine, a 40,000-tpd concentrator, and a 10-mile slurry pipeline that will transport a 28% copper concentrate slurry to a new filter plant located in Miami. Concentrate will be treated nearby at Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co.&apos;s new smelter complex. The current pit design contains reserves of approximately 350 million tons of ore averaging 0.44% Cu. Based on an initial production target of 40,000 tpd ore and 60,000 tpd waste, mine life is estimated at 24 years. The current stripping ratio is 1.5: 1, requiring the ultimate removal of more than 500 million tons of waste and leach-grade material.

This represents a decline of 23 per cent from 1942, when the total Illinois production was 106,ggo,o~~ bbl. and Illinois ranked fifth. The daily average production for 1943 was approximately 225,000 bbl. The solubilities of copper and gold in silicon and germanium have been determined by equilibration of the solid semiconductors with coexisting liquidus phases. The experimental results were combined with estimated activity coefficients of the liquidus alloys to determine the following partial molar enthalpies and excess entropies of solution for the systems: Solubility measurements were also carried out below the eutectic temperature of the copper-silicon system. The partial molar enthalpy and excess entropy of copper in silicon with respect to Cu3Si were determined to be 40.2 ±0.5 kcal per mole and 9.7 i 0.5 cal per mole — OK, respectively. It has been dentonstrated that nu-cleation and growth of intermediate compounds are retarded in copper-silicon diffusion couples. This points out the dangers of determining equilibrium solubilities by dijjusion methods. An interesting new flotation technique which reportedly improves mineral recovery over an extended particle size range-from 3 mm to 5 microns and below-has been developed by the Institute of Physical Chemistry, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Designated the "static" flotation technique, it is suited for upgrading tin, molybdenum, tungsten, uranium, gold, copper, lead, zinc, and other metallic ores. Recoverable nonmetallics include feldspar, sulfur, and phosphorite. Characteristic of the static flotation process are: •longer contact period (up to 1000 times longer between particles and bubbles, •low collision velocity and inertial forces between the contact and aeration in a thin pulp layer, • aeration without the harmful hydrodynamic repulsion upon particles below 5 microns (the pulp layer is only a few millimeters thick and rising bubbles collide with the particles either directly or in the thin foam films formed), •option to conduct the process with or without froth by film flotation at equilibrium contact angles, and • the use of inexpensive frothers and/or unstable froth with separate regulations of froth stability by hydrodynamic, ultrasonic, or electrostatic means.

Before describing the electrostatic processing of feldspar, it might be well to review some of the basic definitions and terminology of feldspars. The feldspar minerals constitute a group of alumino-silicates of potassium, sodium, and calcium. Barium feldspar sometimes occurs naturally but is very rare. Hardness varies between 6 and 6.5 and specific gravity between 2.5 and 2.8. Color is generally white or pale shades of red, yellow, or green. The approximate chemical composition of the principal feldspars is given in Table I. The albite (sodium aluminum silicate) and an orthite (calcium aluminum silicate) feldspars are the end members of a series called plagioclase. These two molecules form a complete solid solution series ranging from pure soda feldspar at one end to the pure lime feldspar at the other end. Intermediate solid solutions are known as oligoclase, andesine, labradorite, and bytoconite. The general structure throughout this series is the same. Sodium and calcium may replace each other and silicon and aluminum may replace each other in the structure.

CARLTON mill in the Cripple Creek district, 45 miles southwest of Colorado Springs, Colo., has been in operation for approximately three years, treating the custom sulpho-telluride ores formerly handled by the Golden Cycle mill in Colorado Springs. At the new mill the pyrite-telluride flotation concentrates have been roasted, prior to cyanidation, in a Dorrco FluoSolids reactor, which has proved capable of yielding calcine readily amenable to cyanidation. Incoming ores are crushed at Carlton to 5/8 in. and sampled in 30 to 75-ton lots before the individual lots are mixed in the fine ore bin. The composite ore then goes to the grinding circuit. Classifier overflow from the grinding circuit is treated by flotation to produce a concentrate containing approximately 85 pct of the values in 5 pct of the weight. The flotation concentrate goes to the FluoSolids reactor prior to cyanidation. Cyanide solution values are recovered by zinc dust precipitation. Flotation tailings are thickened and cyanided, the values from this part of the circuit being recovered from solution by activated carbon.
