Oil shale industry of Estonia provides a significant contribution to the country’s economy, but causes a large number of different problems. In spite of high economical parameters of the current underground mining (room-and-pillar) technology it is not effective. Backfill technology will be applicable in condition of Estonian oil shale mines. Nowadays attention has been focused on the use of combustion and mining by-products as filling materials. Use of ash and limestone in mining industry is treated as a part of mining technology, not as a waste disposal. Underground utilization of wastes reduces the volume and area required for surface disposal, environmental taxes. It improves the quality of mining works. The use of backfill technology has great impact on mining practice in Estonian oil shale industry.

Yield pillars have been used for many years to help reduce stresses near mine openings and improve roof and floor stability. A yield pillar is often defined as a pillar that fails but retains residual strength. Stress transfer occurs through the roof and floor after the peak strength of the pillar is reached. High stresses are transferred from around the openings onto abutments that can be barrier pillars or unmined ground. This mechanism, often referred to as pressure arching, is possible as long as the width of yield pillars is less than the critical width above which stresses cannot be carried by the overburden. Significant stress transfer also can occur due to small amounts of pillar and/or floor yielding before the peak strength is reached. This is accomplished in a quasi-elastic manner with little or no visible roof and pillar fracturing or floor heave. Long-term stability may be achieved when stresses and mechanical properties are favorable to pre-failure yielding. This paper gives practical examples where improvements in stability and resource recovery were achieved with this mechanism. Yielding was assessed by comparing measured and calculated vertical pillar stresses. Results indicated that calculated stresses in the pillars were 25 to 40 percent higher than the measured stresses, demonstrating significant arching load transfer to the abutments. Pre-failure yielding is probably often present but unintentional in both development and production areas. Better recognition and use of this mechanism should lead to improved designs as mines become deeper.

Dense medium processes are used to clean over 50% of the coal that is fed into preparation plant facilities worldwide. The dense medium is formed using ultrafine magnetite which is recovered after the cleaning step using drain-and-rinse screens and magnetic separators. Despite the high efficiency of the recovery system, magnetite losses of around 0.5 to 1.0 kg/ton are common. Considering the recent escalation of magnetite to around $300/ton, an alternative source of magnetic material from coal combustion bottom ash has been investigated. A relatively low cost recovery system has been developed. Dense-medium tests using the bottom ash magnetics revealed a high level of efficiency as indicated by probable error values around 0.03 over the range of medium densities investigated. The results from both the recovery and coal cleaning efforts will be discussed in detail.

Introduction In 1986, the US economy passed the $4 trillion mark. However, the value of domestically processed materials of mineral origin fell slightly to $240 billion. The value of metals produced from US ores was unchanged at $5.6 billion, as was recycled scrap at $4 billion, while the value of industrial minerals rose slightly to $17.9 billion. Consumer demand strongly affects mining and the US economy is relatively saturated with longlived products. Moreover, in recent years there has been a steady increase in consumer, mortgage, and federal debt, inhibiting new purchases of goods. Motor vehicles and housing are major traditional markets for mineral materials. However, the 242 million US citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 92 million dwelling units. In 1986, domestic motor vehicle production fell 3%, to 11.3 million units, while new housing starts rose slightly to 1.8 million units. Nearly all mineral commodities move relatively freely in world trade. As detailed in Figs. 1 and 2, in the last three decades world production of major mineral materials has greatly increased. At present, substantial excess productive capacity exists not only in the US but also in many other countries. Consequently, the US mineral industry is encountering increasing competition from other sources, along with increasing competition from newer, engineered materials. For example, US production of plas¬tics has risen from 900 kt (1 million st) in 1950 to 22.7 Mt (25 million st) in 1986 - on a volume basis significantly greater than steel. Plastics, too, are mineral-based materials, some 7% of petrochemicals going to their manufacture. 1986 saw increased calls for protection. But President Reagan, in his 1987 State of the Union Message and Economic Report to the Congress, reaffirmed adherence to a policy of free and fair trade. However, he stressed the need for increased efforts to open foreign markets to US exports and to increase competitiveness of US industry US imports of mineral-based minerals in 1986 were valued at $40 billion and exports at $24 billion. Strategic minerals As detailed in Fig. 3, imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important materials, including many classified as "strategic and critical." There were no changes in stockpile policy during the year. Congress debated the President's 1985 proposals to reduce stocks of World War II-type materials and to focus more on high technology materials needed for the cutting edge of future military material. But no final action resulted. However, Congressional concern about apartheid in South Africa did result in increasing pressure to limit imports of South African minerals. Meanwhile, the National Critical Materials Council in the Executive Office of the President intensified its efforts to be better able to advise the President. In the early 1990’s the British Columbia (Canada) mineral industry frequently discussed the need to participate in, and compromise with, public environmental interests in order to ascertain long-term stability. However, as the decade progressed the mineral industry withdrew from almost all meaningful public participation. As government protected areas policy in the past year has illuminated, there is a continued need for long-term land access stability. This paper historically analyses the public engagement policies of the British Columbian mineral industry while it participated in long-term consensus-based multi-stakeholder land-use planning processes. From this analysis the paper recommends that the mineral industry reengage the public and institute a new working relationship with environmental advocacy groups so as to ensure British Columbia becomes the most sustainable mineral producing jurisdiction in the world.

Recent advances in computing, rendering, and display technologies have generated increased accessibility for virtual reality (VR). VR allows the creation of dynamic, high-fidelity environments to simulate dangerous situations, test conditions, and visualize concepts. Consequently, numerous products have been developed, but many of these are limited in scope. Therefore, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a VR framework, called VR Mine, to rapidly create an underground mine for human data collection, simulation, visualization, and training. This paper describes the features of VR Mine using self-escape and proximity detection as case studies. Features include mine generation, simulated networks, proximity detection systems, and the integration and visualization of real-time ventilation models.

Condition monitoring is a viable troubleshooting practice among many industries to extend equipment performance, minimize unplanned downtime, reduce maintenance and repair time and costs, and increase related aspects of plant safety. But obstacles abound for mining, mineral-processing and cement operations striving to implement the technologies. Harsh machine environments can muddy efforts. High vibration in machinery can interfere with wide-spread rollout. Staff expertise or skills may be lacking. And costs may be prohibitive. Fault detection has emerged as a practical and cost-effective solution to identify process and machinery faults before failure interrupts productivity or jeopardizes worker safety. Fault detection can be a stand-alone system or connected to plant automation.

I.H. 635 (LBJ Freeway) was constructed as a loop freeway around the city of Dallas in the late 1960s and early 1970s with a design capacity of 160,000 vehicles per day (vpd). Today’s facility is carrying over 270,000 vpd. To help mitigate community concerns with regard to right-of-way issues, noise, safety, and traffic disruption, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is planning a number of significant improvements. The West Section improvements include the construction of managed HOV/Toll lanes. Within this 8-mile section, TxDOT is planning two mined tunnels(1.5 and 1.9 miles long) beneath the LBJ Freeway. The mined tunnels will connect to cut-and-cover box sections in both the east and west directions. This paper presents an overview of the project development from the design schematic, through the geotechnical investigations, into the current design stage. The project is being planned for implementation by use of a Comprehensive Development Agreement.

The Second Avenue Subway is a $16.8 billion project planned by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York City. It will reduce overcrowding and delays on the Lexington Avenue Line, improving travel for both city and suburban commuters, and improving access to mass transit for residents of the East Side of Manhattan. The project is a new, two-track, 13.5 km (8.5 mile) subway extending from Lexington Avenue at 125th Street in Harlem on the north end of Manhattan, to Water Street at Hanover Square in Lower Manhattan. The first phase of construction includes rock tunnels from 92nd Street to 62nd Street and connection to the existing 63rd Street station, three new stations, and track and systems from 105th Street to 63rd Street, allowing service between 96th Street and Brooklyn via an existing Broadway Line. The following describes the Project in detail, discusses the construction challenges addressed in the design, and the initial design/build contract to be awarded in 2005. A discussion of the planned mined construction of two rock caverns and a cut-and-cover station construction are also included.

The advent of the more efficient and effective rare-earth roll (RER) separator in the early 1980s began a new era of dry magnetic separation. The RER units quickly became the separator of choice within the materials processing industry. Though RER separators are now commonplace throughout the world, only modest advancements have been made to the original design. This paper details recent, more significant, rare-earth magnetic separation developments. These developments maintain the best features of existing technology while minimizing shortcomings. The discussion includes discerning features that aid in better metallurgical performance. Also discussed are improved mechanical aspects that allow for both easier operation and maintenance. Performance details from various test programs are included.

The wetting characteristics and water film stability at the talc surface have been studied, particularly the effect of polysaccharides such as guar gum, starch, and dextrin. Talc is a gangue mineral in the flotation of base metal sulfide ores, precious metal sulfide ores, and platinum group metal (PGM) sulfide ores. Talc surfaces were investigated using surface analysis techniques including atomic force microscopy, high-speed video bubble attachment measurements, and wetting film stability measurements using a synchronized tri-wavelength reflection interferometry microscope (STRIM). In the presence of polysaccharides, there is a significant increase in bubble attachment time at the talc surface, but only a slight change in contact angle, which suggests that polysaccharide depression of talc is due primarily to the slow rate of bubble attachment and not due to a change in contact angle. The critical rupture thickness (hc) for a hydrophobic talc surface was found to be 56 nm, while the hydrophilic phlogopite surface of similar structure has an equilibrium film thickness (he) of 25 nm. At low polysaccharide concentrations, the wetting films formed on the talc surfaces were unstable, but at high concentrations the wetting films became stable with similar thickness values as the critical rupture thickness, and bubble attachment did not occur. However, it was found that the critical and equilibrium film thickness values do not change significantly with the polysaccharide type or concentration. The results from this research help us understand further details of film rupture and displacement during bubble attachment.

The economics of a mineral processing circuit is dependent on the numerous sensors that are critical to optimization and control systems. The sheer volume of sensors results in mines not being able to keep the sensors calibrated. When a sensor goes off calibration, it results in errors which can severely impact plant economics. Normally, these errors are not detected until the error grows and becomes a large (“gross”) error. Undetected errors are not remedied until the next calibration, which on average are a year apart Beamex (2019) [1] across all industries. Classical statistical methods that depend on linear relationships between input and response variables are typically used to find gross errors, but are not effective for highly non-linear and non-stationary operations in mining and mineral processing industries. Calibration of sensors is time-consuming and generally requires physical intervention that results in equipment downtimes causing production losses. Therefore, in situ detection methods are warranted that do not require physical removal of sensors to compare with standard measurements or well-calibrated sensors. Data-mining based techniques and algorithms have high success rate in tackling such problems. This paper presents results from a groundbreaking multi-year big data research project whose goal was to develop data-mining-based original techniques in a multi-sensor environment to identify when sensors start to stray, rather than wait for errors to grow. The carbon stripping (gold) circuit in the Pogo Mine of Alaska was selected for this project. Maintaining strip vessel temperatures at optimum levels is crucial for maximizing gold recoveries at Pogo, and hence the focus was on the temperature sensors of the two strip vessels. An automated algorithm to detect errors in strip vessel temperature sensors was developed that exploited data from multiple sensors in the strip circuit. This algorithm was able to detect with a high success rate when bias errors of magnitude as low as ± 2% were artificially induced into strip vessel temperature data streams. The detection times of about 1 month were much less than the industry average calibration frequency of 1 year. Thus, the algorithm helps detect errors early, without stopping the circuit. The algorithm alarms can serve as triggers when calibrations are done. Experimental methodology along with results, limitations of algorithms, and future research are also presented in this paper.

SUMMARY The productivity of drill and blast methods of mining in hard rock is limited by the cyclic nature of the operation, and a plateau of performance has been reached, even with the most advanced equipment developments. Higher mine operating costs and lower metal prices have more than ever generated the need for breaking through these productivity barriers. After initial field testing The Robbins Company has designed and manufactured, on a joint venture basis with Mount Isa Mines, Ltd., Australia, a prototype "Mobile Miner" for continuous cutting of hard rock. This paper describes the cutting concept, the initial application of a completed 1,156 m (3792 ft.) long 14% decline, actual performance and delay analysis, developmental modifications, anticipated performances of a fully developed machine, and possible future applications. The Florida Department of Transportation District 6 (FDOT D6) began a study in 1987 for a master plan to improve the traffic circulation and congestions between the Port of Miami (POM) and downtown Miami, FL. This study included a tunnel connection between two man-made islands, the Watson and the Dodge islands. Though a finding of no significant impact (FONSI) was completed in 1992, the project remained on hold for about 10 years. In 2002, Florida Turnpike took over this project, re-evaluated its benefits to the lo-cal communities, determined its feasibility (specifically the tunnel options) and established a probable cost. In 2005, the FDOT D6 regained its charge over the project and concluded that a bored tunnel under Biscayne Bay is feasible. Its primary components are: ? Widening of the MacArthur Causeway Bridge, to accommodate truck traffic to the Port of Miami. ? A tunnel connection between Watson Island and Dodge Island, where the POM is located. ? Connections to the POM roadway system, either for the traffic from the city of Miami or for the truck traffic from I-395 to the POM. The project will improve access to and from the POM and provide a dedicated roadway connector linking the POM with the MacArthur Causeway (State Route 41/1) and I-395, specifically for the trucks in and out of the POM without going through downtown Miami. As identified in the project information memorandum (PIM), its primary objectives are to: ? Improve access to the POM, helping to keep it competitive and ensuring its ability to handle projected growth in its cruise and cargo operations. [ ] ? Improve traffic safety in downtown Miami by removing POM traffic, trucks and buses from the congested downtown street network and, in doing so, facilitate ongoing and future development plans in and around downtown Miami.

The abandoned Belle Eldridge Mine near Deadwood, South Dakota, is on land controlled by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The mine produced lead and zinc during the first half of the 1900s. Because of acidic drainage and elevated levels of metals in tailings and waste rock, the site was evaluated in 1998 and 1999. After evaluation, the mine was remediated during 1999-2001 by the BLM. Since remediation, values of pH in water samples have been nearly neutral and specific conductance values have been much lower than before remediation. The Grizzly Gulch forest fire of July, 2002, consumed much of the Belle Eldridge site and resulted in greater than normal erosion and sediment flushing during the months following the wildfire. Had the site not been remediated and the tailings emplaced within a capped repository, generation of acidity and off-site migration of heavy metals within sediments could have been severe at downstream locations.

In 1990, Freeport Exploration began regional reconnaissance exploration programs in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of the republic of Indonesia (Fig. 1). Irian Jaya occupies the western half of the island of New Guinea. Freeport was awarded an initial contract of work that totaled 2.6 million hm2 (6.4 million acres). The company was subsequently awarded additional concessions that added 1 million hm2 (2.5 million acres). The concessions require work commitments and periodic relinquishments. Due to these relinquishments, Freeport’s current land position totals 1.9 million hm2 (4.7 million acres). Freeport began the exploration program to locate additional Grasberg deposits, the largest deposit in the Ertsberg district. But the company recognized that other types of deposits could be present in the largely unexplored area of Irian Jaya.

The contract included excavating and lining 26,000 L.F. of rock tunnel to 33'-I.D. Concrete was placed at a rate of 90LF per working day using a movable bridge to allow batching, mixing and pumping of concrete adjacent to the tunnel form.

Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) is one of the most considerable branches of Operation Research. MCDM refers to making decisions in the presence of multiple, usually conflicting, criteria. The problems in MCDM are classified into two categories: Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) and Multiple Objective Decision Making (MODM). However, very often the terms MADM and MCDM are used to mean the same class of models and mostly confused in practice. Usually, MADM is used when the model cannot state in mathematical equations and otherwise MODM is used (Hwang and Yoon, 1980). Decision-making (DM) is extremely important stage in Mining Engineering like other engineering branches. Every mining engineer makes several decisions in daily mining applications. Most of the decisions made by mining engineers are completely instinctive according to their past experiences and there is not any DM method applied in DM process. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is one of the well-known techniques solving the decision problems. The AHP is very simple, and understandable method especially non-numerical data considered in DM process. Equipment selection is one of the prominent problems of mining engineering. Mining engineers have to make difficult decisions when equipment selection stage. As the decisions in the equipment selection have radically influenced the economic life of any mining scenario, these are considered as complex MADM problem. So, the decision maker can evaluate the subjective criteria in the problem of equipment selection. The decision maker wants to maximize more than one objective criterion for equipment selection stage. Among the number of alternatives, the most suitable equipment must be selected according to objectives and alternatives. MADM applications can help the decision maker to reach the optimal solution for the equipment selection. In the mining industry, MADM methods can be applied for the equipment selection because it is a process that includes subjective and objective criteria affecting the selection of equipment among the alternatives.
