Analysing a flotation plant?s operating performance requires accurate metallurgical sampling. Typically, the aims of performing flotation plant surveys are to establish a consistent and accurate understanding of the operation of the circuit as well as to identify potential areas for improvement. Once the data have been collected, a mass balance is required to provide a consistent set of data from which plant performance can be assessed. Mass balancing is a key skill that many metallurgists and mining industry professionals are familiar with. Mass balancing reconciles the feed and product streams throughout the plant and is sometimes used for accounting of the material entering and leaving a system (eg. JKMetAccount). However more common reasons for mass balancing are: better understanding of the flowrates within a system, assessing the quality of data obtained from sampling and surveys, and providing a key dataset for assessing and improving the performance of unit operations. Mass balancing requires practice and experience to determine if the results are reasonable. There are various software programs available to assist in the mass balancing and understanding of processing plants. This paper is focused on JKMultiBal initially developed by Gay (1993), and then later commercialized by JKTech. JKMultiBal in its current release is for balancing data in both one and two dimensions, i.e. balancing data on either sized or assay bases as well as size-by-assay. With the recent trend in flotation circuits becoming more complex, JKMultiBal has been used to gain a better understanding of the processes occurring within the circuit. This paper provides a description of the program as well as several case studies where the two-dimensional mass balancing has resulted in improvements in plant performance.

Na-feldspar (albite) and K-feldspar (microcline or orthoclase) are major feldspar minerals with identical crystal structures and physicochemical properties. Flotation appears to be a unique method of separating these minerals. Fundamental studies on amine/feldspar system in the presence of monovalent salts showed that separation of these feldspar minerals by flotation is possible at certain concentration of monovalent salts in HF medium and natural pH. A comparison between natural pH and HF medium indicates that the latter provides a better selectivity at the expense of higher collector requirement. A general mechanism for both systems involving an ion exchange between the uncommon ions and adsorption of the common ions is proposed to be responsible for creating differences in the charge of albite and microcline unto which amine adsorbs.

Ventilation planning in trackless metal mining is often taken for granted. This paper highlights the trials of planning and executing the ventilation design for Bog Zone at the Lisheen Mine. Ventilation planning for Bog Zone started at the feasibility study stage in 2003; subsequent design changes continued until 2006. In August 2006, the development of the Bog Zone ore body was accelerated through the use of contractors; in addition, the Lisheen equipment fleet was revised based on a larger load and haul fleet. As a result, the circuit was reviewed in terms of changes in design conditions and best practices. This review resulted in a 40% increase of total airflow required to mine Bog Zone. Resources utilized to design the circuit include: external review, computer modeling, and in-house Lisheen planning and operational staff review. The final ventilation design configuration was adopted in 2007, after modeling and evaluating 30 different scenarios, resulting in a better distribution of airflow, optimized secondary escape way, reduced contaminants, and a total power reduction. The value of investment in computer modeling of primary ventilation circuit and planning for staged implementation should never be underestimated.

The authors summarise the development and recent advances in the reconstruction and visualisation of three-dimensional objects from point data and describe applications to the reconstruction of orebody shapes from drill-hole and other data. In particular, Dijkstra's algorithm is proposed and implemented as a means of optimal reconstruction of complex orebody and topographical shapes from irregularly located sample data. The surfaces of the shapes are constructed from triangular tiles and the algorithms proposed by the authors are guaranteed to find the optimal set of tiles that "best" construct the surfaces on the basis of specified objective criteria. The algorithms are illustrated by applications to a complex silver/gold/zinc/lead deposit.

If an Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM is operated effectively tunneling can be carried out producing negligible ground movements. Using the methods given in this paper face losses of the order of 0.5% and less are generally obtainable using an EPB. Operating the EPB TBM in this manner reduces the requirement for the building protection measures used to protect surface structures. This can result in a considerable cost saving for the construction of a tunnel under built up areas. This paper to give guidance on the causes of ground movements around a TBM and the methods of running an EPB TBM that will minimize those movements. Details of how this was successfully done during the construction of the Bangkok Metro are given. Introduction In the design and operation of gravity concentration circuits, the application of process models for spiral concentrators offers significant benefits. A substantial amount of work has been produced over the last 30 years in the field of modeling the metallurgical performance of spiral concentrators. It is not the aim of this contribution to add to the refinement of modeling technique but to share some of the experiences and potential improvements which can be achieved in a relatively simple way. The design of spiral circuits usually requires extensive testing. This is often conducted in batch operation only, either due to lack of suitable continuous testing facilities, the unavailability of sufficient quantities of sample, or other constraints. Typical problems arising during circuit development from batch testwork are the extrapolation of results to different feed conditions, and resolving of internal recycles. Model selection and development The classic approaches in spiral modeling technique range from fundamental fluid dynamics, based on the Navier-Stokes equations in combination with expressions for local slurry properties, to fully empirical and statistical models. With the initial objective of developing an in-house tool for gravity circuit optimization and development, mathematical model types from each category, available either commercially or in the published literature, were evaluated. Model selection For the desired purpose, an approach proposed by Holland-Batt (1990) was found suitable, which was adopted and modified. Holland-Batt reported that the shape of release curves in spiral applications could be described by a combination of a linear function in the initial recovery zone, and a power law function outside this zone. The Peñasquito deposit in Mexico is one of the largest grassroots precious metal discoveries developed in recent years. Goldcorp Inc. acquired the gold-silver-lead-zinc property with the acquisition of Glamis in 2006. The Peñasquito property is located in the northeast corner of Zacatecas state, Mexico. The elevation of the property averages 1,900 m (6,200 ft) above sea level. It is situated in a wide east-west valley. Minera Peñasquito, S.A. de C.V., wholly owned subsidiary of Goldcorp Inc. has operated twin SABC-flotation lines since June 2010. Each line is capable of processing 50,000 tonne per day using a SABC grinding circuit followed by flotation to produce lead and zinc concentrates. The addition of a Polysius Polycom HPGR 2417 with dual 3,000 kW drives to reduce the crushed pebbles produced by the SAG mills was planned to increase production to 65,000 tonne per day per line. The production has been limited to 100,000 tpd due to operating issues in the grinding circuit. The operating issue has been the amount of pebbles generated by the SAG mills is significantly less than originally planned. This paper describes the planned installation of a crushed augmented feed to maximize utilization of the HPGR capacity. This coupled with full utilization of the SAG and Ball Mill available energies there is the potential to achieve a 50% total capacity increase from the grinding circuit.

The Harts Range deposit, owned by Olympia Resources is located some 130 kms northeast of Alice Springs, in central Australia (part of Australia’s Northern Territory). The core economic minerals here are industrial grade garnet and alumino magnesio hornblende (AMH). The resource contains an estimated 2.3 million tonnes of recoverable garnet and 6.2 million tonnes of recoverable AMH, making Harts Range one of the most significant abrasive medium deposits in the world. Part of the general marketing axiom of Olympia Resources is to make high quality products from the garnet and also a special series of blended garnet/AMH products to match the needs for other sectors of industry. The deposit mineralization is of alluvial origin and thus, requires no significant liberation regimes. Over 50% of the head feed is in the form of SiO2/quartz and as much as 17% is –63micron clay slimes and mica. Original pilot scale testwork for flowsheet development centred around fairly conventional wet gravity systems, with spiral concentrators being the pre-eminent separating device. To a point, this type of flowsheet was going to achieve some of the aims albeit fairly predictably. The one area that this circuit would be very limited though is in the recovery of the very coarsest of the medium SG minerals. This was going to be a very important and longer-term costly flaw. Amongst the highest demand, greatest value of products to be produced will be the range of garnet & AMH in the +600 microns sector. A flowsheet dominated by spirals would be fated to forfeit a significant proportion of these coarse minerals to tails. At the Outokumpu Technology P/L test facilities in Perth, testwork was conducted using a pilot scale Floatex® Density Separator, the LPF-230 model. Using a twin stage approach, whereby a primary Floatex® underflow reports directly to a secondary Floatex®, recovery of the economically important +600 micron garnet was increased from 65% in the spirals-only flowsheet to 95% using the Floatex® based flowsheet. Finally, the other significant aspect of this approach is in substantial simplification of the circuit required and a huge reduction in plant footprint. Also, the nature of using hindered settling provides substantial opportunities for process control and automation.

9K medium was used to isolate iron-oxidizing bacteria from 27 sump water samples collected from Dexing Cop-per Mine, Chengmen Mountain Mine and Yin Mountain Mine, Jiangxi Province, China. Lead acetate and silver nitrate were used to enrich metal-resistant iron-oxidizing bacteria from the above water samples. Isolate 16 was isolated from the sample taken at Dexing Copper Mine. Growth experiments indicated that when incubated under lead acetate (3,500 mg/L), isolate 16 still carried out ferrous ion oxidation, while isolate H1, a less resistant strain taken at Yin Mountain Mine, had a tolerance level of only 400 mg/L. When assayed with other metals, i.e., Ag+ (240 mg/L), Hg2+ (0.9 mg/L), Cu2+ (32,000 mg/L) and Mg2+ (22,500 mg/L), isolate 16 still carried out ferrous ion oxidation while, on the other hand, isolate H1 exhibited much lower tolerance levels, i.e., Ag+ (60 mg/L), Hg2+ (0.1 mg/L), Cu2+ (19,000 mg/L) and Mg2+ (13,500 mg/L). Based on 16S rDNA sequence data, isolate 16 and H1 were both identified as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans.

"Shallow-depth (<200m) high temperature submarine hydrothermal systems are not commonly observed on mid-ocean ridge settings, as most known systems are located within arc - island-arc volcanic settings, often proximal to coastal areas (meteoric waters added). In 2013, during the Centre for Geobiology’s 2013 oceanographic cruise (R/V G.O. Sars), a dredge successfully sampled massive sulfides and hydrothermally altered rocks from the top of a volcanic edifice (~144-284 m depth) located on the northern sector of the Kolbeinsey Ridge. Dredged samples include vesicular altered basalts, and matrix supported anhydrite, barite and barite-pyrite-anhydrite volcaniclastic breccias. Sulfidesulfate breccias depict complex zoning where numerous small vent orifices are distributed with large blades of marcasite that appear intergrown with barite. Native sulfur was observed in one of these small vent orifices. On a microscopic scale, numerous spherical silica-rich structures appear associated to these breccias. These rocks are evidence for the presence of a relatively high temperature (minimum 150ºC) shallow-water seafloor hydrothermal system in the Arctic mid-ocean ridge, far from mainland influence. This new discovery presents a unique opportunity to study the dynamics of fluid chemistry, metal mobility and precipitation in shallow hydrothermal systems. The remote location of this system dictates that fluid recharge will be influenced solely by seawater and magmatic fluids, In July-August 2014 we expect to survey this new field and acquire new and comprehensive data."

The Late Miocene San Cristobal Ag-Zn-Pb deposit represents syngenetic and epigenetic mineralization with low- and high-sulfidation characteristics. Geology is characterized by barren dacitic ring fracture domes, mineralized resurgent rhyodacite domes, strongly altered and mineralized tuffaceous lacustrine sedimentary rocks, and an extensive crystal-lithic tuff debris apron. The ore body is hosted by intra-cauldron sedimentary rocks and breccias. Fluid inclusions suggest that silver, lead, and zinc were transported as chloride complexes and precipitated by cooling in veins from <5 wt. % NaCl eq. fluids at 170°-215° C. Silver associated with resurgent rhyodacite was transported as a chloride complex and precipitated by increased H2S activity or increased fluid pH.

The development of technologies to improve mining and mineral processing is an ongoing process. These new technologies are the result of the industry’s drive to lower costs and improve productivity. Many technical conferences allow mining industry professionals to learn about these new technologies and possibly implement them in their own operations. Employee safety and health is of paramount importance for SME and its members. Many SME members work daily in our Nation&apos;s mines or have a direct impact on others that work in the mines. SME supports the mission and purpose of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), which is to prevent all injuries and disease from mining and to promote safe and healthful workplaces for the Nation&apos;s miners. SME supports the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and university research geared toward prevention of all occupational injuries and illnesses. SME maintains that laws and regulations governing the mining industry need to be based on sound scientific principles to ensure that workplace solutions can be readily implemented and that solutions to safety and health problems are fully realized.

Although many SAG operators may agree that on-line measurement of SAG feed-size is an attractive notion, applying this information in a control strategy that recovers the investment, engineering time, and maintenance is not necessarily straightforward. The P. T. Freeport Split-Online system was justified based on the assumption that SAG feed-size could be used in a feed-forward control strategy either at the regulatory or expert system control level. Something like “as the feed size changes adjust the throughput to avoid under or overloading the mill” was envisioned. However, following installation and calibration, Cluster Analysis showed that such an approach would not be successful. However, the sensor has been successfully integrated into Freeport’s grinding control strategy other ways. It provides an input to the Kalman filter parameter estimator used in a model-based control strategy that optimizes throughput and grind. The Split sensor also provides a characteristic feed size parameter for use in an on-line work index estimator. This paper describes the calibration and installation of the Split SAG feed-size analyzer, and reviews the evolution of its use in the Freeport C3 grinding circuit control strategy.

Most accidents are the result of risk taking. They can happen anywhere. Our coal industry categorizes accidents by type, occupation, commodity, age, every way you can imagine. We now know, how many were injured and when, for all the different types of accidents. We have ask ourselves many times, why are we having accidents, how can we stop the accidents and fatals in our industry? Present numbers and projections do not show that this will happen. Serious accidents can result in fatalities. Fatal accident can be prevented, and the coal industry can achieve zero fatalities. How soon this happens, depends on a great number of factors. I will discuss accidents and reasons for us having accidents in an attempt to get to the root causes. The historical perspective will be touched on, and the risk and analysis of accidents will be probed.

A major spontaneous combustion incident occurred in the sealed goaf of the SL3 Panel; Southland Colliery in 2003 resulting in the loss of a longwall and sealing of the mine. The most important issue for the new owners, Yancoal Australia Pty. Ltd, was to effectively manage the atmosphere in the fire affected sealed area. This atmosphere comprised of flammable gases, the products of combustion and excessive levels of oxygen due to pressure differentials across the panel isolation seals with a potential ignition source associated with the residual spontaneous combustion event. The challenges were met in the first instance by the erection of pressure balance chambers with limited success. The problem was not solved until the pressure chambers were pressurized using a Floxal Nitrogen Plant supplied by Air Liquide Australia. Given the success of this approach on a small scale, a higher capacity Air Liquide Floxal Unit was acquired to manage spontaneous combustion at the recommencement of longwall mining operations. This provided the ability to pressurize pressure chambers that were installed in the Maingate Seals behind the face of the adjacent Longwall Block effectively preventing the ingress of oxygen and permitting the goaf to self inert in a reasonable time period. This paper summarizes a new proactive method of mitigating the risks associated with active and sealed goaves. Proactive management of these areas using low flow nitrogen into pressure chambers to maintain a positive pressure has eliminated typical reliance in explosion proof or explosion resistance seals as the primary control.

"The benthic environmental impact experiment addresses environmental impacts at a specific site related to deep-sea mineral resource development. For such a purpose, since 2010 we have carried out essential environmental research at both the BIS and a preservation site. We have acquired several tens multi- or box core samples at 32 sites within the BIS especially between 2011 and 2013, aiming to examine the basic properties of surficial deep-sea sediment as the potential source for deep-water plumes.In this study, we present physical the properties such as water content, shear strength and also geochemical properties such as major elements, rare earth elements (REEs), heavy metal contents at the BIS. Such proxies vary distinctly according to the Facies association. The lithology of all core sediments in the BIS corresponds to both Association Ib (Unit I/Unit II) and Association IIIb (Unit I/Unit III) on the basis of the KORDI classification (KORDI, 2004); Unit I is watery mud and dark grayish brown (10YR4/2) to dark brown (10YR4/3). Unit II is highly bioturbated mud and brownish yellow (10YR6/6). Unit III is very dark brown (10YR3/2) to black (10YR2/1) mud. Physical properties of these sediment types show that Association Ib is distinct from Association IIIb. The vertical profile of water content changed more sharply in Association IIIb probably due to compaction; water contents varied from 230 to 300% in Association Ib and changed from 200 to 250% in Association IIIb. The vertical profiles of shear strength are also quite different between Associations; the profile curve in Association IIb is much more gentle due to bioturbation."

There are currently more that 460 mines worldwide that utilize cyanide for gold and silver extraction. Despite this large number of cyanide-related mining operations, there have been no published accounts during the previous 25 years of the death of humans due to cyanide as a direct consequence of major mining-related environmental incidents. All published accounts of human deaths due to mining-related environmental incidents have been the result of physical inundation with tailings or waste rock materials. It appears that major mining-related environmental incidents have not been concentrated in any geographic location, are likely to occur regardless of the size of the mining company and do not occur more frequently with a specific type of mining activity. Several cyanide treatment and recovery technologies have been widely demonstrated to reliably control cyanide levels in mining solutions. With proper use of these technologies, tailings cyanide concentrations can be maintained at levels protective of wildlife while reducing the potential for adverse environmental incidents. The development of an international cyanide code of practice or management plan is recommended and should take into consideration the adoption of a weak-acid-dissociable (WAD) cyanide standard that maintains the levels entering a tailings impoundment below 50 mg/L.

An accurate and reliable prediction of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) performances, in terms of Rate of Penetration (ROP), utilization (U), and cutter wear rate, is a critical element in the successful planning and execution of mechanical tunneling project. Three open hard rock TBM projects were studied to establish possible trends and correlations between rock mass properties and machine performance. Based on this analysis and literature survey, three geological parameters, including RQD, RMR, and groundwater inflow rate, were identified as having the greatest impact on TBM utilization level. Rate of Penetration (ROP) and cutter wear rate were also correlated with fracture spacing, alpha angle, and Cerchar Abrasivity Index (CAI).
