During mining, crushing and handling the size of iron ore lumps decreases. Key factors in determining the amount and size of fines that are produced are the mechanical properties of the ore. In a continuation of earlier work on the same ores the mechanical properties of three Australian iron ores from Yandi, Koolan and Mt. Whaleback were determined. In particular, fracture toughness was investigated in greater detail by examining its relationship to crack length using the compact tension test. The elastic modulus and strength of the ores were also determined in flexure and compression. The results were interpreted using Weibull statistics, enabling the ores to be ranked according to strength and elastic modulus. These results, together with data on the mechanical response of the ores to stress and observations concerning the effect of mineralogy on cracking, provide a coherent understanding of the mechanisms involved when the ores fracture

Studies have been made of interfacial turbulence occurring in reactions in which indium, zinc and cadmium, dissolved in amalgams, are oxidised into aqueous phases by ferric or mercurous ions. It has been found that this turbulence occurs when the concentrations of oxidising ions in the aqueous phase become sufficiently great. These concentrations are the same as those at which the mass-transfer coefficients in the aqueous phase increase sharply when both phases are stirred by gas bubbles rising through them. The effects of gas flow rate on the mass-transfer coefficients for zinc in mercury have been established, and the oxidation of pure mercury has been investigated. The relevance of the work to processes involving liquid metals is discussed

The key variables in the financial analysis of a mining project include the metal price and the quantities of ore and metal. In general, if the metal price drops, the cutoff grade is increased so as to increase the average grade. This causes recovered tonnages of ore and metal to drop. Discussion is presented of the development of a new method to evaluate the relationship between the cutoff grade, z, the ore tonnage above cutoff, T, and the metal quantity above cutoff, Q. Detailed information is provided on the QTz curves for lognormal and inverse gaussian (Sichel's) distributions. Both these distributions are used as models for the grades in different types of ore bodies, and they are both T-symmetric. The geometry of the QTz curves is simplified, making it easier to work out the impact of minor variation in the parameter values for each distribution

In this method the state of an open-pit mine is represented by the number of benches that are mined in each predesigned mining phase (or pushback). Consequently, a specific mining schedule can be represented by a sequence of states which starts with the topography of the mine site and ends with the ultimate pit. For a given set of mining phases all feasible states are first generated and sequences of states are then evaluated for technical and economical feasibility. The best sequence, which gives the maximum net present value (NPV), is found by applying a dynamic programming optimisation algorithm. The algorithm also optimises the cut-off grade which satisfies the mill feed requirement for each planning period. It was found that the algorithm can be used not only for scheduling but also as an effective tool for analysing the effects of mining and milling capacities and cut-off constraints on the mining schedule and the total NPV. The algorithm, which was programmed in C, was successfully applied to a large Au-Cu deposit

Geochemical mapping provides a direct approach to delineating areas of epigenetic mineralisation and for relating the regional distribution of this mineralisation to an overall tectonostratigraphic and structural framework, as well as to extensive areas of hydrothermal alteration. Organic lake sediment is a widely available and effective sampling medium for regional geochemical mapping in Newfoundland, that has proved to be valuable in Au, Sb and W exploration

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. A lithological and geochemical study revealed significant lateral variation of the interval over 170 km of strike, from about 30 m at the Union Section to 220 m near Brits. The cumulates also become more evolved and leucocratic with distance from the Union Section both towards the NE (Amandelbult) and SE (Impala, Rustenburg and Brits). It is inferred that the persistent heat flux from a putative major feeder zone near the Union Section impaired deposition of felsic cumulates in the vicinity, delaying crystallisation of successive phases in parts of the chamber near the feeder. New influxes were therefore deposited on a footwall of varying thickness and lithology in response to different degrees of crystallisation and accumulation along strike. Several deep Swedish cut-and-fill mines experience severe ground control problems, including roof collapse and wall sloughing, as a result of variable rock quality and high in situ stresses. A project to examine the problem included two main areas. The first was prediction of mining conditions at depth and the adaptation of cut-and-fill mining to such conditions; the second was the assessment and improvement of support methods at present and future depths. Simple, elastic, mine-scale numerical models were used to optimise stope sequencing and more detailed, stope-scale models to simulate the failure processes around a stope and the interaction of rock mass and support. Kristineberg was chosen for testing and calibration of the predictive methods because of its long history of severe ground conditions and the large base of observational and monitoring data available for comparison. Horizontal cut and fill was found technically suitable to depths beyond 1 000 m and economically viable if ore value covers support costs. Stability can be achieved with the present support technology down to 1 000 m but the 7-strand 15.2 mm cables have poor deformation properties (5% failure strain) compared with rebar rock bolts (17%). Reducing the intervals between levels from 100 m to 50 m will cut support costs and improve production reliability and capacity. Simulation of sill-pillar mining indicated that conditions would be most severe when pillar height was reduced to 15-20 m; mining of a sill pillar has been carried out successfully to the last 3 m, whose extraction is planned for the near future

Hazards such as vibration, dust emission and fragment projection can result in an area called the Danger Zone being set around a blasting site. Traditionally Danger Zones have been set solely on the basis of consequences (e.g. based on the maximum distance of rock projection or expected ground vibration plus a defined safety margin). Advances in risk assessment and its growing acceptance as a safety management tool have led to the setting of Danger Zones based on both consequences and frequency of occurrence. This allows distances to be optimised on the basis of acceptable risk levels rather than the potential consequences of infrequent events. The setting of a flyrock Danger Zone is used to demonstrate a risk-based approach compared with a traditional consequence approach

Reduction kinetics from slags containing CuO(0.5), ZnO, PbO, NiO and SnO into a Cu-based metal phase were subjected to computer simulation using a previously developed model for the kinetics of metal-slag-gas reactions that assumes mass-transfer control in all phases. The effects were examined of changing bulk Fe oxide activity, gas reducing potential, temperature, Fe content of the Cu phase and metal/slag ratio. The results permit practical conclusions to be drawn about industrial slag-cleaning practice, but the model is still limited in terms of thermodynamic inputs and the idealisation of reaction conditions

"Albite-rich sedimentary rocks that contain abundant Fe sulphides occur in the lower portion of the ultramafic sequence at Kambalda and their broadly antipathetic relationship to most of the nickel orebodies is well documented. These sediments generally contain less than 0.1% Ni, but nickeliferous equivalents with 0.3 to >6% Ni occur locally in close spatial association with more typical volcanic peridotite-associated massive, matrix and disseminated ores. Nickeliferous sediments have been mined at several locations at Kambalda but, collectively, they constitute less than 2% of the total Kambalda nickel reserve. The nickeliferous sediments occur both on the ultramafic-footwall basalt contact and within the lower part of the ultramafic sequence, and are usually less than 5 m thick. They are commonly finely laminated rocks with a cherty appearance, composed essentially of layers of albite+quartz±amphibole, alternating with pyrrhotite+pentlandite±pyrite layers. Some contain a minor amount of carbon. The sediments are only of ore grade (> 1% Ni) immediately adjacent to massive Fe-Ni-Cu sulphides, which are interpreted as normal magmatic ores on the basis of geochemistry and the presence of distinctive ferrochromites. The nickel content of the sediments decreases to background levels (<0.1%) within about 20 m of the massive sulphides. In most locations the massive sulphides clearly have been emplaced tectonically within or adjacent to the sediments, which are commonly highly deformed. Typical nickeliferous sediments contain about 1% Ni, 0.1% Cu, 0.1% Zn, 400 ppb Pd, <0.2 ppb Ir and 10-200 ppb Au. They have lower Ni/Cu (average 10), higher S/Ni (average 6) and higher S/Se (average 11 200) than associated massive sulphides (average 40, 4.8 and 7400, respectively). The Pd/Ir ratio of the nickeliferous sediments (typically > 1000) contrasts markedly with that of associated massive sulphides (average ca 16).The high Pd/Ir values are similar to those which have been reported for hydrothermal Fe-Ni sulphides and barren sulphidic sediments of probable volcanic exhalative origin. They preclude a direct magmatic origin for the sulphides in the nickeliferous sediments, though S/Se and S isotope data indicate a magmatic source for the sulphur. The restriction of nickeliferous sediments to within about 20 m of normal magmatic sulphides and the lack of a widespread Ni dispersion halo suggest local redistribution of originally magmatic Ni. This probably occurred by diffusion and hydrothermal mobilization during deformation and amphibolite-facies metamorphism. Although not totally ruled out, a volcanic exhalative origin for the Ni seems unlikely."

Ore reserves are inadequately defined. Geological reconnaissance and pre-feasibility mining work generate a broad range of valid tonnage estimates, many published for the benefit of various interests, who may view all figures as reserves. This work reviews the regular estimation of tonnages, grades and relevant factors for single deposits. A consistent framework of definition is suggested which, by conforming to the known structures of feasibility studies and long-range plans, avoids the pitfalls of over-categorisation and of unrealistic promises. Applications are based on North American experience but are intended for general use

A method is proposed for the continuous calulation of a rock mass in real time while tunnelling with a TBM. Rock properties are investigated through models of the fracture stress under the disc cutters, the quasi-shear stress between the disc cutters and the specific energy of cutting under the disc cutters. Comparison of theoretical and monitored data of cutting specific energy can be used to determine theoretically the prevailing shape and size of the bulk debris. The shape and size of the chips from a given rock vary with the boring parameters. Introducing shape and volume corrections into the models of the evaluated stresses suppresses the influence of the boring regime and allows the rock properties to become dominant

The application of simple methods of statistical analysis, coupled with geostatistical analysis and geographic information systems, can only summarise and give an outline of the spatial distribution of the parameters measured. Spatial analysis of the components or factors calculated, through principal component analysis or factor analysis, allows assessment of the geographical distribution of the dominant processes contributing to soil composition and/or contamination. Neither of these tools, however, distinguishes between the different sources of pollution. The application of canonical correlation to the data, driven by expert appraisal of the potential pollution sources, allows their quantitative and spatial assessment while GIS provides the environment in which to organise and present the results. The methodology is illustrated by its application to soil-contamination data from the Lavrio area in Greece, where silver-bearing orebodies have been mined for more than 25 centuries

The rate of reaction between iron oxides and carbonaceous materials, agglomerated as pellets, was studied experimentally by measuring the weight loss as a function of time. The effects of temperature, carbon type, inert gas flow rate, pellet size and additions (sodium. carbonate and Portland cement) were determined. It was shown that the value of the apparent activation energy can display large deviations under different experimental conditions; in the present work it was found to be 226.6 kJ/mol. The reaction with coke is slower than with charcoal, and the rate increases as the flow of inert gas in the reaction vessel decreases. Comparison of the rates for pellets of different sizes has shown that for small pellets the initial rate is faster but that it slows down at high conversions owing to the penetration of inert gas into the pellet. Additions of sodium carbonate and Portland cement increase the rate; sodium. carbonate promotes the catalysis of the Boudouard reaction, which is the slowest of the partial reactions. During the construction of storage caverns, and during their lifetime if the use to which they are put so requires, it is necessary to provide adequate ventilation to ensure the safety and comfort of the underground workforce. An analysis of likely contaminants during construction has indicated that where a large facility is situated in a rock mass of even moderate temperature climatic conditions are likely to be the limiting factor during most of the mining operation and atmospheric pollution when blasting is undertaken. Possible options for improvement are increased air flow, cooling of intake air and reduction of the heat source by altering the number and type of haulage units employed in the cavern. Local solutions are an alternative approach where heat problems are confined to a few specific locations

Bangladesh ilmenite is partially altered, containing pseudorutile, rutile and haematite as well as the predominant ilmenite phase. A typical analysis is 39.45% TiO2, 24.19% FeO and 33.0% Fe2O3. Reduction of the ilmenite by charcoal was found to involve two major reactions: conversion of pseudorutile into ilmenite and rutile, and change of ilmenite into metallic iron and rutile. The first, which was much the faster reaction, was responsible for an initial increase in ilmenite content with reduction time at lower temperatures. Apart from these two major reactions, rutile was reduced to lower oxides at 1 100 degrees C with a consequent decrease in its XRD peak height

The Birimian rocks of the region are gold-bearing and show many similarities to those of Burkina Faso. All three greenstone belts (Goroual, Tera and Sirba) host gold-bearing quartz veins. It appears that, contrary to previous misconceptions, lateritic terrain is not an unfavourable environment for exploration geochemistry. This is demonstrated by the results for the Koma Bangou area, where soil and termite-mound geochemistry have been successfully used in the search for gold. Soil provides an effective sampling medium where it is shallower than about 2 m; there is evidence that some soil anomalies are enhanced by the presence of secondary (botryoidal) gold. In areas of thicker, allochthonous soil cover, termite-mound sampling is more effective. At Koma Bangou an identified resource of some 11 100 000 tonnes with an average gold grade of 2.44 g/t has been reported. The gold mineralisation occurs in quartz veins and stockworks aand in the wallrocks of shear and fault zones that trend N, NW and NE. The host rocks are a granodiorite-syenite porphyry and intermediate metavolcanic rocks and tuffs

Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The region includes the Deveci siderite/goethite deposit and the Hasancelebi, Karakuz and Kuluncak magnetite/goethite deposits; Deveci is the only mine in operation. The area consists of a serpentine-gabbro complex overlain by a volcano-sedimentary sequence hosting the iron ores. At least three generations of hydrothermal alteration have affected all rock types except the latest trachytic dykes. The Deveci deposits occur in a pyroclastic volcano-sedimentary sequence with shales and carbonates equivalent to the main mafic sequence, whereas the other three deposits formed contemporaneously with the intrusion of trachytic dykes. The deposits are of the volcanic-exhalative type, with syngenetic siderite in pillow lavas or stratiform layers the primary and main Fe-bearing mineral. In the west hydrothermal alteration has replaced siderite in pillow lavas with magnetite or has remobilised sideritic iron into magnetite veins
