The release of methane as free gas from the seafloor into the water-column well within the hydrate stability field is a natural process observed today in various ocean settings, such as the Cascadia margin, the Black Sea, the Guayamas Basin, and the Gulf of Mexico. The subsequent dissolution of gas bubbles into the water-column determines the vertical distribution of aqueous methane in the water-column and the upwards methane flux. Understanding this process not only is essential to describing the impact of natural deep-sea gas seepage, but also to assessing the hazard potential from blowouts and offshore exploitation activities, which are steadily expanding to greater ocean depths. Furthermore, the fate of methane from seeps contributes to scenarios of global change in the past and future involving the large scale destabilization of gas hydrates on a. We recently reported on the extended lifetime of methane bubbles within the hydrate stability field due to the formation of a hydrate skin (Rehder et al., 2002), based on in situ measurements of methane and argon bubble dissolution in the depth range 400 to 800 m. More recently, these observations were extended to depths from 900 to 1500 m. Single bubbles were injected from the ROV Ventana into an attached, back-illuminated, flow-through imaging box. The ascent of individual bubbles within the imaging box was recorded with Ventana?s HDTV camera system by piloting the 3-ton ROV upward, at the bubble rise velocity, for up to 400 m of vertical transit. Observed rise velocities were approximately 30cm/sec for all depths. Post-dive analysis of the HDTV video allowed detailed measurements of the bubble shrinking rates. The results of the earlier and new experiments lead to the following conclusions: (A) Methane bubbles released below the hydrate stability field showed markedly enhanced lifetimes, attributed to hydrate skin formation. The change in radius with time, dr/dt, varied from -7.5 micrometer/s above the hydrate stability field to about -1 micrometer/s at the deepest release depth. (B) Bubble lifetime within the hydrate stability field increased with distance in P-T space from the hydrate phase boundary. (C) Before hydrate skin nucleation, dr/dt for CH4 bubbles was comparable to dr/dt above the hydrate stability field. Although variable, the onset time for the hydrate skin effect to occur generally decreased with distance from the hydrate phase boundary (super-pressurization and super-cooling with respect to hydrate formation). (D) Even before the onset of the hydrate skin effect, a slight decrease of dr/dt with increasing depth was observed.

"Ferromanganese crusts and nodules from the Amerasian basin of the Arctic Ocean are characterized by a unique composition compared to crusts formed elsewhere in the global ocean (Konstantinova et al., 2017; Hein et al., 2017). One of the most significant differences from global ocean crusts is the high detrital mineral content; mass balance calculations show that it may be as high as 35% in some samples (Hein et al., 2017).These Arctic Ocean Fe-Mn crusts also typically have three distinct megascopic layers, except for thin crusts; less commonly, four layers are noted for thick crusts. The age of initiation of Fe-Mn crust growth in the Amerasia Basin varies from 14.8 Myr to 0.7 Myr ago based on the Manheim and Lane-Bostwick (1988) Co chronometer, Be isotopes, and Th excess methods (Dausmann et al., 2015; Konstantinova et al., 2017; Hein et al., 2017).Samples and MethodsFourteen Fe-Mn crust samples recovered on Russian and U.S. research cruises were chosen for analyses based on their morphology, composition, water depth, genetic type, and location in Amerasia Basin. Seven samples from four distant dredge sites along Mendeleev Ridge and seven samples from four locations on the Chukchi Borderland are included (Fig. 1). Dredge site water depths vary from 3850 to 2100 m with the deepest samples from the Chukchi Borderland. The Cook Islands are 15 islands located in the Southwest Pacific (between 8-23°S latitude and 156-167°W longitude). The total land area is about 200 km2. However, because its islands are widely scattered, the EEZ of the Cooks encompass an area about 2 million km2. The Cook Islands government exercises sovereignty and jurisdiction over its EEZ according to international law and convention as a member state under UNCLOS1. Accordingly, the Cook Islands government exercises full control over resources in its EEZ, including minerals on the seabed. Decision making on allocating licences for exploration and ultimate mineral recovery is by the Cook Islands government and will be set out in relevant statutes. Seabed minerals investigations within the EEZ of the Cook Islands and adjacent waters were first carried out by, USSR, US, and New Zealand research vessels in the late 1960 early 1970?s and indicated the presence of high concentrations of manganese nodules. Remediation and restoration of offshore marine habitats is a relatively new concept with attempts in European regions largely being instigated by requirements of various strategic directives including Article 2 of the Habitats Directive (1992), the EC Water Framework Directive (2000, Article 2 of the OSPAR Convention (1992) and the developing European Marine Strategy Directive. A field experiment to establish the practicality of various options for rehabilitating the seabed on the cessation of dredging has been successfully set up. The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the practicality and effectiveness of gravel seeding as a potential restorative method that can be applied at marine aggregate extraction sites following cessation of dredging. Zone 2, within Area 408 (offshore Humber) was chosen as the experimental site as there is some evidence for persistence of sand which may have resulted from screening operations at this site.

A number of Articles contained in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea III (UNCLOS) bear directly on legal issues related to the recovery of mineral deposits on the ocean floor. Mineral resources of the continental margin other than oil, gas and hydrates include, sand, gravel, shell, coral, gemstones and phosphorite. Jurisdiction over the exploration and exploitation of these deposits is determined either by the Territorial Sea claims of a coastal state or their recognized sovereign rights in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). At least 33 coastal states have the right under Article 76 (Continental Shelf regime) to claim seabed jurisdiction beyond 200 nautical miles (EEZ limit). In addition, several states have "Pioneer Investor" status with regard to seabed resources in international waters (The Area). A global maritime boundary database (GMBD) has been developed as a basic resource identifying the current claims of coastal states. It provides detailed information on existing boundaries and limits determined by the UNCLOS accords or by multi-lateral agreements which affect mineral exploration and exploitation. A regional assessment of the aggregate potential of the Scotian Shelf is presently being funded through a Canada-Nova Scotia Cooperation Agreement on Mineral Development. This assessment includes testing of seabed materials for their suitability in a variety of concrete, asphalt and other specialized applications. The glacial and postglacial Holocene history of the Scotian Shelf has been favourable for the formation of large deposits of sand and gravel that have potential for use as marine aggregate resources. Large banks and inner shelf areas of the seabed consist of basal transgressive sand and gravel of the Sable Island Sand and Gravel Formation. These sediments accumulated during the late Wisconsinan postglacial transgression, through sorting of glacial materials that were originally deposited beneath marine terminating glaciers. Some sandy deposits occur as low-stand deltas on the inner shelf at 70 m water depth and were formed during the maxi- mum low sea level stand, in early postglacial time, at approximately 12 000 yBP. Modern sediment transport processes have contributed to the formation of areas of large sand bedforms, such as the Cape Split sand wave field and other isolated sand waves of the inner Bay of Fundy, and Eastern Shoal on Banquereau. Sandy sediments, found in many transverse channels in the nearshore, offer a potential for placer gold where proximal to adjacent onshore epithermal gold deposits. Lithothamnion covered gravel occurs as a thin lag overlying glacial sediments in much of the nearshore. Relict gravel beach ridges have been eroded and redistributed through sub-littoral processes after passage of the transgressing beach front. Multibeam bathymetry, sidescan sonograms and high-resolution seismic reflection profiles are the main survey tools. Ground truth consists of large volume seabed samples, vibrocores and photographs. A preliminary assessment of the aggregate potential indicates that very large volumes of suitable aggregate lie in the offshore of southeast Canada.

Investigations of the Gorda Ridge within the proclaimed U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone off northern California and southern Oregon, and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge extending along the center of the Atlantic Ocean, have received new impetus from the discovery of hot black smokers, sizeable polymetallic massive sulfide deposits, and vent animals at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge by the NOAA VENTS Program in 1985. Prior to that time, the oceanographic community focused investigations of seafloor venting at the faster-spreading oceanic ridges of the Pacific Ocean including the East Pacific Rise, the Galapagos spreading center and the Juan de Fuca Ridge because a consensus held that the faster spreading rates at these ridges were necessary to supply the heat to drive black smoker-type venting. As the only oceanic ridge in the Pacific with slow-spreading characteristics, the Gorda Ridge is an outlier of the slow-spreading ridge system that extends through the Atlantic Ocean and western Indian Ocean comprising more than half the 55,000-kilometer-length of the globe-encircling oceanic ridge system. The purpose of this presentation is to review the history of offshore non- fisheries resource development since World War II, as an introduction to a planned symposium on offshore resources scheduled for the 1996 UMI Conference. After World War II the United States became the leader in offshore oil and gas production, deep ocean drilling technologies, offshore terminals, platforms and production systems, and natural gas recovery and transport. Wartime skills in acoustic profiling and antisubmarine warfare were transferred into commercially important geophysical exploration techniques. The application of ocean drilling and geophysical techniques permitted the recognition and elucidation of plate tectonics patterns, development of seafloor spreading theory, and the transformation of our knowledge of seabed and subseabed strata. After John Mero's studies and recommendations for developing marine manganese nodules in the late 1950's interest in nonfuel minerals grew rapidly. The formation of international deep sea mining consortia in the 1960's was accompanied by a flurry of ocean engineering development, minerals prospecting and associated environmental studies The Santa Barbara Oil Spill of 1969 resulted in a moratorium on both offshore energy and minerals leasing by the Depart- ment Interior, and catalyzed the development of new Federal legislation in 1972. In 1973 the offshore energy moratorium was lifted in response to the Arab oil embargo, and offshore energy activities surged for a time. Recent research both on active and fossil systems has demonstrated that shallow subseafloor replacement processes are not only viable depositional mechanisms for massive sulfide mineralization, but likely contributed as a major component of the mineralization occurring in large VHMS deposits and in many present-day seafloor hydrothermal systems. In the giant Neves Corvo deposit, as in many others VHMS deposits of the Iberian Pyrite Belt, there is overwhelming evidence for silicate-sulfide replacement processes being largely responsible for the efficiency of the ore-forming systems and huge size of the deposits. Textural evidences at all scales, coupled with a well-constrained mass-balance geochemical analysis, indicate that extensive replacement in the lavadominated volcanic rocks of the footwall sequence, and disseminated replacement mineralization in the volcaniclastic and/or sedimentary units were major mechanisms of ore formation in the Neves Corvo deposit. Shallow metal deposition prior to fluid discharge on the seafloor is likely to play a major role in seafloor massive sulfide mineralization. This premise should be envisaged as critical in evaluating the economic potential of seafloor resources, and should certainly be part of the equation when plans for seafloor mineral exploration missions are drawn.

The first hydrothermal mineral deposits found at a seafloor spreading center were discovered in the Red Sea by multi-national research vessels between 1963 and 1965. At that time, the deposits were considered a special case related to continental rifting and an early stage of opening of an ocean basin. Since that time, examples of almost all major varieties of volcanic- and sediment-hosted hydrothermal deposits associated with basaltic rocks in the geologic record have been found at present spreading centers. Review of over 100 hydrothermal mineral occurrences presently known at oceanic ridges and rifts indicates that a range of deposit sizes from small to large (> 1 x 106 tonnes) occurs at all seafloor spreading rates. However, larger deposits but fewer per unit length of spreading axis appear to form at slow- than at intermediate- to fast-spreading centers based on available data. Larger deposits are more common in sediment-hosted than in volcanic-hosted settings regardless of spreading rate. A spectrum of hydrothermal deposit varieties (stratiform, stockwork and disseminated sulfides; various forms of sulfate, carbonate, silicate, oxide and hydroxide deposits) occurs in almost all of the tectonic settings. High-intensity, ore-forming, subseafloor, hydrothermal convection systems that conserve heat and mass and concentrate hydrothermal precipitates are extremely localized by anomalous physical and chemical conditions relative to nearly ubiquitous low-intensity hydrothermal activity at and flanking seafloor spreading axes at all spreading rates. Introduction Marine Autonomous Systems are making rapid progress from their early years as research tools for university departments & government institutes into having a growing number of real-world applications for industry, academia, statutory inspection, data acquisition and defence. Deep sea mining offers a distinct set of challenges that are very well suited to autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and to a lesser extent for autonomous surface vehicles. Deeper, smarter, more capable Global demand for rare earth metals and high-grade ore will inevitably lead to exploitation of deep ocean resources as terrestrial reserves become depleted or remain unavailable for political or environmental reasons. Winning production licenses from the international seabed authority and especially gaining public trust to undertake deep sea mining activities and licenses will depend upon high quality pre-exploitation scientific surveys of the sea floor ecosystem, and subsequent monitoring of the impact of mining activity and remediation work. The actual area covered by the seabed mining operation may be quite small in terms of square kilometres, but still larger than can be patrolled by tethered ‘eyeball’ class Remote Operated Vehicles, so multi-spectral inspection, assessment and monitoring will be more effective when carried out by untethered AUVs. By using seabed recharging stations and data upload points the AUV can stay in situ in the deep ocean, rather than be repeatedly brought back to the surface.

INTRODUCTION One of the major concerns for deep seabed mining is its environmental impact, from the disturbance of benthic communities due to the mining activity to the disposal of mine tailings back to the ocean. Yet a significant amount of waste materials would be produced from the on-deck processing on the mining platform, all the materials that produced on the mining platform are to be shipped to the land unless the related regulation and guidelines are developed by IMO and ISA (ISA, 2018). Still, ecotoxicology data for the deep seabed minerals from case studies in deep-sea tailings disposal (DSTD) and submarine tailings disposal (STD) sites are lacking and all other related aspects are also largely unknown. This year, the Republic of Korea has started a research project for the more comprehensive understanding of chemical and physical properties of mine tailings from the on-deck processing and the possible environmental impacts on the marine organisms after its disposal. Based on the scientific data collected from this project, Korea would be able to make recommendations for the methods and technical standards for the deep seabed mining discharges. The subjects of this project are threefold: to understand the physical/chemical properties of the tailings, to model the dispersion of particulates after the disposal, and to assess its impact on the marine ecology. Laboratory Experiments Producing Mine Tailings First, the possible waste materials are produced by mimicking the collecting and dressing processes at sea. The polymetallic nodules (PN) would be mined by using a collector lifting the crushed nodules out of the bottom sediment, and the bottom water, accompanying sediment, and the fine nodule particles which are too small to be recovered would be discharged to the ocean and thus are considered as tailings (Schriever and Thiel, 2013). In the laboratory, PN is crushed into the fragments smaller than 2 cm, abraded in the water using the rock mill, and then sieved to obtain the fine particles to be disposed.

Technological advances and the shift towards green energies in the last decades have led to a substantial increase in the demand for metal resources. With rising political tension, and quasi-monopolistic production of some key metals, a secured supply chain cannot be guaranteed [1]. Therefore, the focus of the international research community and mining companies has expanded to the seafloor, looking for additional resources. The seafloor may have the potential to contribute significantly to a secure metal supply in the future. However, we have only investigated a fraction of our oceans in sufficient detail to assess the global resource potential. A detailed exploration of the vast seafloor is currently economically not feasible, due to its extremely time-consuming and costly nature. Seafloor massive sulfides generally form along the active plate boundaries and at active volcanoes in arc settings. However, the resources are not evenly distributed on the seafloor. Large deposits tend to be more common along slow-spreading and ultra-slow- spreading ridges that make up the majority of the global mid-ocean ridge system [2]. Therefore, it is important to establish geological models and exploration criteria in order to narrow down the permissive areas, which are likely to accommodate economically interesting deposits. Based on a detailed study of the TAG hydrothermal field in the central Atlantic Ocean, hosting a large active mound as well as several inactive mounds, we develop exploration methods and criteria to define areas of potential massive sulfide occurrences along slow-spreading sections.

The recent discoveries of hydrothermal activity in the ocean off New Zealand have created interest in the business community in the commercial possibilities of mining associated marine polymetallic sulfides. This interest is more so, as this hydrothermal activity is in much shallower depths, between 120 ? 1800 meters, than the typical 2400m in other parts of the oceans. Mining for other ocean deposits around NZ, such as phosphate nodules and off-shore deposits from gold bearing river beds is also attracting interest. The question is: - how can these deposits be mined without spending the enormous sums of money required for specialized mining technology? There are no dedicated off- the-shelf systems designed exclusively for underwater mining. Such systems require expensive development and manufacturing processes and then, are most probably designed for only one specific purpose. The costs involved place such equipment beyond the means of smaller entrepreneurial groups and only the big companies have the resources required. However, large companies are normally reluctant to take the risk of investing large sums of money into deep ocean projects. Australia and New Zealand, until recent times, have been somewhat isolated from European and North American technical resources - especially in the field of underwater technology. Over the past century such isolation has often led to solving problems with what has become locally known as ? ?the number 8 gauge wire method?. This approach to problem solving entails using whatever is available to get the job done and keep costs down. In the old days with NZ technology being mainly based around farming, a piece of No. 8 gauge fencing wire, although not designed for the purpose, was often used to fix various problems ? hence the term.

Studies on polymetallic manganese nodules and Co-rich crusts in the EEZ's of the Cook, Line, Ellice and Phoenix Islands between 0-20°S show that Ni and Cu reach their greatest combined abundances of over 2% between 2-8°S on the southern margin of the equatorial zone of high biological productivity, as a result of biological fluxing of Ni and Cu to the nodules at and just below the CCD. By contrast, Co reaches it greatest abundance of 0.6% south of 8°S in nodules on non-biogenic clays well below the CCD where little biological Co supply is likely. Nodule abundances are greatest (up to 30kg/m2) in the Co-rich area in part due to AABW flow, giving highest overall metal quantities per sq meter in the nodules there, particularly of Co. There are approximately 110 x 106 tonnnes of combined Ni plus Cu plus Co expressed as Ni equivalent in Cook Islands EEZ nodules, approximately 12 x 106t. in Phoenix Islands ones, and approximately 1.4 x 106 t. in Ellice Islands ones, in areas of greater than 5kg/m2 nodule abundance. In the Co-rich crusts, Co averages about 0.7% and crust thickness about 1.6cm, both related to metal fluxes in and adjacent to the 02 minimum zone in association with which both maximum thicknesses and Co grades occur. "INTRODUCTIONPolymetallic nodules from the Clarion and Clipperton Zone (CCZ) within the equatorial NE Pacific Ocean show high concentration of economic important strategic metals such as Ni, Cu, Co, Mo and Rare Earth Elements (REE). The content of those metals in nodules is depending on (i) the supply during individual growing periods, (ii) the environment conditions as well as (iii) on different manganese minerals, which occur in nodules. The incorporation of the metals can vary within the structure (incorporated into the structure / over vacancies of the structure) and this can be relevant for the further metallurgical treatment.Mineralogy of Mn-nodules from the CCZ and the incorporation of metalsManganese nodules consist of nm to µm thick layer growth structures (LGS) of different genetic origin (hydrogenetic/suboxic-diagenetic). Those LGS form due to the precipitation of Mn-and Fe-(oxy) hydroxide colloids from the oxygen rich near-bottom water and/or pore water (hydrogenetic growth; Halbach et al., 1988) or from suboxic (depleted in O2 <5µmol O2/l; Hein and Koschinsky 2013)) near-bottom water/pore water (suboxicdiagenetic growth; Halbach et al., 1988; Wegorzewski and Kuhn, 2014).In general, metals dissolved in seawater will be adsorbed and complexed on the oxide surfaces according to their different surface charge. The surface charge of the Mn-Fe (oxy) hydroxides depends on the pHzpc (zpc: zero point of charge). In seawater dissolved hydrated cations (Ni2+, Cu2+, Co2+) are adsorbed preferentially on the negatively charged Mn-oxide (MnO2 -) surface (pHzpc 2.8). In contrast, negatively and neutrally charged complexes (e.g., Ti(OH4); REE(CO3)2 -, MoO4 2-) are adsorbed on the surface of Fe-oxy hydroxide colloids (FeOOH+) which have a slightly positively charged surface (pHzpc 8.5; Stumm and Morgan, 1981; Koschinsky and Halbach 1995)."

As for Earth, where human beings live, approximately 70 % of its surface is covered by oceans. Today, advanced technology has led us to understanding the abyssal ocean floor through the use of submersibles and ROVs (remotely operated vehicles) for the last 30 years. Furthermore, the oceanic crust beneath the abyssal floor still remains an unexplored scientific frontier due to the lack of a direct approach. Exploration of this frontier is required to enhance our understanding of the mechanism of the M.8 class plate-subduction-type earthquake, of generation of the big tsunami, that caused the disaster, and of the paleo-global environmental change as well as of the origin of life as viewed in deep water thermal vents.

Detailed geological studies using side scan sonar, bottom sampling and piston cores along the Rio Grande do Sul inner continental shelf and coastline indicate the occurrence of elongate deposits of calcareous shells fragments containing high calcium carbonate content. On the inner shelf these deposits lie at a depth between 15 and 50 meters and have been interpreted as ancient shorelines. They occupy an area of 965 km2 with a economic potential of 1 billion tons. Chemical analyses indicate a mean composition of 34.8% of calcium; 0.16 ppm of fluoride. According to the regional economy such composition make it highly recommended for a variety of uses including poultry feed and cement.

"The Blue Nodules project started February 2016 as part of the EU Horizon 2020 subsidy program. Blue Nodules aims at developing a sustainable deep sea mining system for the harvesting of polymetallic nodules from the sea floor. Blue Nodules is closely related to the Blue Mining and Midas projects, both EU subsidized projects. Blue Mining mainly concerned the development of technical capabilities to adequately and cost-effectively discover, assess and transport deep sea mineral deposits up to 6,000 m water depths. The MIDAS project - Managing Impacts of DeepseA reSource exploitation - was a multidisciplinary research programme investigating the environmental impacts of extracting mineral and energy resources from the deep-sea environment.The Blue Nodules project is divided in seven work packages defined to develop mining equipment and process equipment, to assess and integrate environmental, economic and technological aspects and to assess and minimize the environmental impact of mining polymetallic nodules.This abstract will address part of the work performed in the second work package called: ‘Subsea harvesting equipment and control technology’. The main topic addressed will be the development of a propulsion system to manoeuvre the harvesting system. The propulsion system will be developed with full incorporation of economical and compliance requirements and to have a minimal environmental impact.SummaryBased on information gathered in the 70’s during the first studies into polymetallic nodules mining and more recent data and developments, an initial full scale design of the propulsion system is developed. The largest challenge for the propulsion of a deep sea mining vehicle is to drive on the soft sediments associated with these deep sea environments. A short summary of the initial design criteria is given below."
