The Macraes Mining Company Limited was listed on the New Zealand and Australian stock exchanges in January 1990, and the proceeds of the float were used to purchase a 70 per cent interest in the Macraes Gold Project, previously owned by BHP Gold Mines (NZ) Limited. Macraes Mining has had a 30 per cent interest in the project since May 1984, when it was incorporated. Project financing in the way of a gold loan was secured in February 1990 and construction commenced shortly afterwards. The mine construction activities were completed within nine months and the mine commenced operations in October 1990.

X-ray diffraction and differential thermal methods were used to determine the mineralogy of some clays used by the heavy clay industry in the Adelaide area. A detailed analysis was made of the mineralogy and particle size distribution of eighteen samples from beds in two pits in the Recent sediments in the Adelaide plains, of six white clays developed from the weathering of the Adelaide series of sediments, and of four Recent alluvial clays from a pit in the Mount Lofty ranges south of Adelaide. Structural clay products in the Adelaide area are manufactured from mixtures of these clays, so the mineralogy and particle size distribution was determined of eighteen clay mixtures used to make red bricks, cream bricks, facing bricks, pipes and tiles.Knowledge of this mineralogy is important in understanding the ceramic behaviour of the clays.INTRODUCTIONIn this investigation an account is given of the clay mineralogy and particle size distribution of some ceramic clays from the Adelaide area. The clays are used in the manufacture of structura,l clay products and the results to 'be described are part of an overall 'plan of study covering the heavy industrial clays and shales of Australia. Feed slurries are typically flocculated in a thickenerÆs feedwell to increase the settling rate, underflow density and overflow clarity. High molecular weight polymeric flocculants are normally used, but present a number of challenges in terms of make up, dilution, delivery and mixing with the feed slurry.Various aspects of the flocculant dilution and delivery system have been studied with a combination of flow visualisation and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). An open topped flocculant dilution/mixing box has been developed to replace a conventional flocculant manifold, with improvements to the mixing, fault diagnosis and ease of determining the flow split to the various dosing points. The addition points to the feedwell have also been studied, both in terms of where the flocculant is added, and how. While conventional multi-hole spargers are effective in dispersing flocculant, they are prone to blocking and have been replaced by open-ended pipes. The required dispersion is provided by an efficient mixing element placed in the dilution port. Adding the flocculant into the feedwell dilution stream prior to mixing with the slurry also provides super-dilution of the flocculant that can further improve the flocculation process and reduce flocculant consumption.CITATION:Heath, A R and Arbuthnot, I, 2013. The Upper Waimangaroa mining permit is part of the Buller Coalfield and lies on the eastern side of the Stockton-Denniston Plateau. The mining permit area is estimated to contain a total in-ground coal resource of 58 million tonnes, contained within 13 separate coal resource .blocks. The coal is Bituminous High Volatile B rank with export potential as semi soft coking or thermal coal. The Northern Opencast mine is the first mine proposed for Upper Waimangaroa and consists of the three resource blocks at the northern end of the permit area. The highwall of the mine will cut into the Mt William Range resulting in overburden cover of up to 150 metres in some areas. The ability to rehabilitate the area after mining was a major consideration in the design of the mine. The Northern Opencast area has been geologically mapped, extensively drilled and effectively modelled using Vulcan software. Three distinct coal seams are present and the mineable in situ resource is estimated at 8.7 million tonnes of which approximately 7.1 million tonnes is likely to be recoverable. It is proposed that this resource will be mined using opencast methods and the void will be backfilled with overburden. The life of the mine is at this stage estimated at 19 years based on an annual production of 500,000 tonnes at 1.8% sulphur and the Upper Waimangaroacoal will be blended with low sulphur coal from the Greymouth Coalfield to meet export specifications. The Northern Opencast area contains a range of native flora and fauna and physical features which make it an environmentally significant area. Mining will totally modify the area, thus an effective rehabilitation scheme is an integral part of the mine plan. Various rehabilitation methods will be used, and wherever possible, the backfilled areas will be rehabilitated so as to resemble the original area as closely as possible.

Factors leading to the decision to use Joy Continuous Miners for pillar extraction in the Burwood Colliery are outlined. A detailed description is given of the Joy 1-CM-2 Continuous Miner, including the power supply to the machine, and the method of cutting coalfrom a face. Modifications found necessary in practice are dealt with.The Joy 10 S.C. shuttle car used in conjunction with the Miner, and alterations made to this unit, are then described, together with Ancillary units for the whole installation such as transformers, motor generator set, air compressor,_ cables for power supply and water supply for dust suppression.Special arrangements were necessary to transport the Miner and Shuttle Cars through the tunnel to the Victoria Tunnel seam, and the method of overcoming the transport difficulties is discussed. Manning of the Continuous Miner unit, and final preparation andsubsequent working of the pillars is outlined. Special attention must be given to maintenance of the machines.It is concluded that the combination of Joy Continuous Miner and Shuttle Car is an excellent method for removing pillars in the Burwood Colliery.INTRODUCTIONThis paper deals with the Burwood Colliery in the RH.P. Group in which some units are engaged in the mechanical extraction of pillars with Joy Continuous Miners.In 1941, an amendment to the Coal Mines Regulation Act of N.S.W. forbade the extraction of pillars by mechanical means unless with the express permission of the Minister for Mines. As this permission was not forthcoming, no mechanical extraction of pillars took place in Australia until 1954 As it was doubtful during most of this period whether mechanical extraction would ever come about, coal generally was won with a view to maximum extraction in the first workings, thus giving rise to centre gannon bord panels and 45° angle cut throughs as shown in Fig. 1.

The increased focus on best practice environmental management has led to mining and mineral processing companies developing a variety of procedures to ensure that the environmental impacts of their operations are minimised, and that company managements are fully aware of these impacts and the policies and procedures established to ensure this process. Parallel to this, international standards for the development and implementation of environmental management systems are being promoted as necessary for companies to demonstrate their due diligence. Good environmental management systems should be built upon the systems already established within companies, and should ensure that the process of continual improvement is integral to their operation. An outline of the basic components of environmental management systems is provided, along with examples of the way various mining companies have implemented such systems. The benefits of best practice environmental management to mining companies are also considered.

Apparently there is little inclination on the part of mining engineers to supplant the transmission of power by compressed air with it's formidable rival, electrical transmission. No doubt there are many advantages to be claimed for compressed air that render it parculiary well suited for the conditions which characterise underground work.

A number of people have expressed concern, understandably, that if mining operations take place in the Coromandel, the flows of mineralised ground water which exist will be intercepted. This water in many cases contains toxic metals including mercury, arsenic and lead and it is thought that if this water is allowed to enter streams or the waters of the Hauraki Gulf, it could endanger natural marine life and possibly established fisheries. This paper seeks to explain in simple terms the geology and the process of deposition of the various mineral deposits in the ground, the chemistry of the reactions between these minerals and the rain water falling on the ground, the hydrology and behaviour of this mineralised groundwater as it moves through the ground until it eventually enters the sea.

Nowadays, the demand for a finer grind in minerals processing has set new challenges within the industry, particularly for grinding technology. Apart from a finer grind, energy efficiency is also a key driver in optimising comminution technology.Stirred milling technology, already proven in many other industries, delivers a modern, sophisticated, flexible and energy efficient grinding solution for fine and ultra fine grinding in minerals processing. Fine grinding technology is utilised particularly in concentrate regrinding to complete the liberation of valuable minerals after the first stage of concentration. Maintaining the correct particle and particle size distribution of the regrind product is crucial for downstream process performance. Stirred milling technology offers the unique possibility for online control and optimisation of the regrind product particle size. This paper describes the basis of this online control possibility and discusses the implementation of stirred milling technology in minerals processing, particularly in regrinding applications. Gold-bearing veins have formed at a wide range of depths throughout the uplift history of the Otago Schist. The earliest gold mineralisation occurred during the later stages of Mesozoic metamorphism. This mineralisation was characterised by diffuse wall rock alteration with greenschist facies metamorphic or retrograde metamorphic mineral assemblages, and gold occurs in this altered rock. Quartz veins formed in .steeply dipping extensional fractures associated with this mineralisation type strike north to northeast. The Macraes mine exploits this deposit type. The present northwest strike of the mineralised zone at Macraes is a result of post-mineralisation deformation of the schistosity-parallel mineralised shear zone which hosts northeast striking extensional veins. This combination of schistosity-parallel shear zone and steeply dipping northeast striking veins may exist elsewhere in Otago, and this deposit type is most prospective. Steeply dipping quartz veins formed during post-metamorphic un-roofing of the Otago Schist strike northwest to west and occur as clusters of near-parallel structures in east and central Otago. These veins consist mainly of massive quartz, although some prismatic quartz occurs also. Breccia fragments in veins are common and these are generally silicified, with some gold. Wall rock alteration is negligible, and vein margins are sharp. A set of middle Tertiary veins occurs in northwest Otago. Most of these also strike northwest and dip steeply, but some strike northeast. These veins contain abundant ankeritic carbonate as well as quartz. The carbonate pervades adjacent wall rock as veinlets, but gold mineralisation is confined to veins. Quartz is commonly prismatic and vuggy, and contains gold, which is commonly coarse grained especially in silicified breccia zones. Associated veins contain stibnite. This vein type formed close to the paleosurface (>2 km). Mineralised veins in Marlborough currently strike northwest, but these have been rotated from northeast strike during Alpine Fault displacement of Marlborough from Otago. Some of these veins were formed under late metamorphic conditions and are similar to the north to northeast striking veins in Otago. As in Otago, this type should be considered to be most prospective if they have associated schistosity-parallel shears.

In gold ores, the range of value disclosed by ordinary mine sampling is very wide, and the number of 'samples required for a reliable average is correspondingly great. Even where a large number of samples is available the weighted mean value of the samplesalmost invariably exceeds the true gold content. In operating mines this disparity is overcome by arbitrary reduction of high assays until reconciliation is achieved, but it is frequently necessary, especIallyin exploration, to base an estimate or to reach a decision on a relatively small number of samples from underground openings or even on a few drill hole intersections. In these circumstances, a decisive influence may be exercised by the weight allowed to high assays and to low grade intersections, both of which events are, of course, dependent on the metal distribution in the ore. Where sufficient data are available, statistical analysis will measure the risk involved, but as this information is seldom to be had, the final choice becomes largely a matter of personal judgment.With this problem in mind, a study was made some years ago of the distribution of values in four Western Australian gold ores, with the primary purpose of learning from actual ore-bodies of differing types, something of the metal distribution in the smallquantities of ore involved in individual routine mine samples, and of the importance in each case of high assays. Adequate and suitable data were available in .four cases, in three of which high assays were of frequent occurrence due to the presence of free gold. The results give concrete expression to well known differences of metal distribution, and it is proposed, firstly to record the observed distribution; secondly to examine some of the consequences of the differences in the distributions limd thirdly, to comment, in the light of this data, on the vexed question of the treatment of high assays. Standard statistical procedure was employed in the compilation of the data. The assays were classified by value into groups, each group covering a range of value of 1 dwt. per ton. Assays of less than 1.0 dwt. per ton form the first group; assays equal to or greater than 1.0 dwt. and less than 2.0 dwt. comprise the second group; those equal to or greater than 2.0 dwt. and less than 3.0 dwt. appear in the third group; and so on. Where the number of samples is large, it can be assumed that the mid-value of the group is the mean value of all the samples in the group, thus the mean values of the first three groups are 0.5 dwt., 1.5 dwt. and 2.5 dwt. respectively.The number of samples in the group is the frequency of the group, but for convenience of plotting this frequency is converted into percentage of all the samples in the series. New detailed mapping, micropalaeont- ology and isotopic dating have been successful in revising the stratigraphy of Woodlark Island. All Middle to Late Miocene intrusives and volcanic rocks have been assigned to the Okiduse Volcanics. In addition, the results demonstrate that the Tabukui beds and Wonai Hill beds (N9, late Early Miocene to earliest Middle Miocene) are a single unit. Similarly, the Nasai and Suloga Limestones are confirmed as a single stratigraphic unit as they yield similar foraminiferal ages (upper Te, Early Miocene), and both occur in the same stratigraphic position unconformably overlying basement Loluai Volcanics. Radiocarbon dating suggests a latest Pleistocene age for the upper Kiriwina Formation. Extensive Quaternary cover and low relief prevents detailed structural airphoto interpretation. In general, the structure is simple with all units on Woodlark dipping to the northwest a_4 exhibiting prominent local block faulting.

The author summarizes and extends the relevant results of papers previously published by various authors and presents these results in chart form. The charts are used to demonstrate the theory on a hypothetical mine.INTRODUCTIONRecently a series of articles have dealt with leakage in a mine ventilation system and the problem of its reduction.Theories were developed by Peascod and Keane (1955) for the combined effect of flow in the airways and leakage through the porous barrier between the intake and return of an ideal mine. Later Keane and Peascoa. (1956) extended these ideas to the use of an underground booster fan in increasing the face ventilation and showed how to determine the water gauge and location of the most efficient underground fan.These articles were based on the assumption that Atkin:son's formula:P = R Q2 (1)gave the relation between the pressure drop P lb'/sq. ft., the quantity, Q kilocusecs, flowing in the mine airways and the total resistance, R Atkinsons, to air flow offered by the mine roadway. An Atkinson is defined as a resistance such that 1 kilocusec of air flows due to a pressure drop of 1Ib.jsq. ft. However for conditions prevailing in most mines a more :appropriate relation is that postulated by Reynolds and others (Lamb, 1953) :P=R Qn (2)where n has some value slightly less than 2. It should be noted that Atkinsons may not be used as units when n is not equal to 2.

Well planned and executed environmental management plans can reduce life-of-mine operating costs and the need to deal with major environmental issues at the time of mine closure. With proper planning during the exploration, feasibility and execution phases of a project, final closure costs can be reduced. The reduction of closure costs should be considered during exploration and initial feasibility studies and when process facilities, waste rock dumps and tailings impoundments are designed. During the mining of the resource, closure cost reduction will depend on effective and efficient environmental management plans for ongoing land clearance, segregation of mine waste materials, management of mine site water and workshop wastewaters, and the establishment of progressive rehabilitation strategies. These issues are the responsibility of planning, production, technical support and maintenance personnel at an operating site. The successful implementation of environmental plans will ensure that all impacts are reduced and that closure issues with major cost implications are addressed prior to closure of the mine.

TIMBER supports for large underground cavities are temporary expedients until the permanent filling can be put in. Nevertheless, timber supports are very necessary in some form. The general problem is to support the cavity in all directions withthe minimum of timber, disposed in the strongest way. The simplest way of filling an irregular space with timber sets is to form triangles.The right-angled isosceles triangle (Fig. 1) leads to the true square set, in which caps are equal to struts. The right-angled unequal-sided triangle and the scalene isosceles triangle (Fig. 2) lead to the oblong square set, where caps are longer than struts.The scalene triangle (Fig. 4) leads to the rhombic or oblique set. The equilateral triangle leads to the hexagon set (Fig. 3), in which the caps and struts are all equal. These five plane figures, the triangle, square, rectangle, rhomb and hexagon, are the only figures that will completely fill any irregular plane figure, without interstices. Hexagon sets were first suggested by the writer in 1902 to a mine manager at Broken Hill, who did not see his way to use them.

IN previous discussions on the occurrence of gold in the Bendigo quartz reefs the opinion has been put forward that the gold shoots are primary concentrations in the quartz reefs during the period of vein-formation. The view has been based upon the constant features of the gold shoots in a large number of individual reefs, independent of their depth below the surface. These features include the mineral associations accompanying the gold, the appearance and association of the gold in the quartz, the similarity in all respects (excepting mineral content) between richly gold-bearing quartz and poor quartz, and the variations in mineral content in the reef apart from gold. The view has been supported by a relation of the gold shoots to faults, together with the dependence of the reefs on the existence of pre-mineral faulting. The secondary deposition of gold has only been observed in a few instances .associated with the younger monchiquite dykes, and is of no economic importance.
