The increasing interest in the subject of electrical separation warrants the addition to what has already been written of a few lines covering the practical workings of the Tilly Foster mill under the direction of Mr. E. S. Moffat, General Manager. Since my last paper was presented to the Institute, Mr. S. P. Tomkins, the superintendent, has had thrust upon him for solution several problems complicated by the introduction of new conditions. 1. The richer portion of the lean ore dump, and that nearest the railroad track, having been worked up in 1890, the handling of the balance, including a largely increased amount of rock, could only be accomplished at an increased cost. 2. The tailings had accumulated close about the mill to such an extent that arrangements had to be perfected to move them further away.

Preheating Feature of Leyner Oil Furnace for Heating Drill Steel The No. 3 Leyner oil-burning furnace, used for heating drill steel, is now made with a preheating chamber. By this addition it is claimed that the heating capacity and, effeciency of the furnace are increased about 50 per cent. This preheater is a section which fits between the body and cover of the furnace of the old design. It may be attached to an old furnace by simply changing a few bolts. Referring to the illustration, it will be seen that the lower chamber is used for the final heating and the upper one for preheating. The type of burner now furnished with this furnace is suitable for either high- or low-pressure air. It hats merely to be throttled for high pressures and when this is done, it, is as efficient as burners designed especially for high pressures and eliminates the noise common to such burners. This furnace burns petroleum or any of its oils, such a, gasoline, kerosene, distillate, etc. Oil heating has many advantages. The steel cannot be injured by absorbing injurious elements such as sulphur, phosphorus or other impurities which :ire present in nearly all coals, nor from unequal heating since the flame imparts a uniform temperature; further, o lie steel is in full view of the operator at all times.

The application of a method for analyzing pressure build-up curves to determine the effective permeability in the Spraberry is presented. Sixteen upper Spraberry wells of the Driver area arc analyzed and show variations in the in-place effective permeability of 2 to 183 md. Since these value- are much larger than the .5 md. or less reported for the matrix rock. a large part of the vertical fractures noted in Spraberry cores- must be considered native to the formation. The effectiveness of the well fracture treatment in connecting the well bore to the native fracture system is analyzed by comparison of the effective permeability as determined from the PI test to that obtained from a pressure build-up curve. These results show that the fracture treatment is sufficiently effective in connecting tile well bore to the native fractrure system to yield a flow capacity within about 50 per cent of that dictated by the native fracture system About two-thirds of the wells show some degree of local blockage. INTRODUCTION Fractured reservoirs have been known in the past.' However, during the past two years the Spraberry formation has directed the attention of the petroleum industry to a study of the performance of a fractured reservoir. The large variation in the number of fractures noted in Spraberry cores rile large variation in the producing ability of offset well.. the dramatic effect of well treatment on well ,productivity. the unknown quantity of oil stored in the fractures and matrix rock. and the unknown oil to be recovered were part of the initial Spraberry puzzle. In this type reservoir where the well treatment is an important factor in determining the productivity. it i- particularly desirable to determine the in-place flow capacity of the drainage area at distance* far removed from the well bore. This value. when compared to the flow capacity obtained from a PI measurement, will show the effectiveness of the well treatment (completion. fracture treatment, acidization. etc. in establishing a flow capacity in the vicinity of the well bore equal to that in the more remote region. The object of this paper i.; to show the application of a method of pressure build-up analysis for this purpose in studying the Upper Spraberry formation in the Driver area. STATEMENT OF THEORY The theoretical basis for the application of a pressure buildup curve to show the effective permeability of the rock at distances far removed from the well bore has been presented in detail in earlier publications.', in the previous development it was shown that pressure build-up behavior of all wells could be reduced to the same dimensionless build-up curve of Fig. 1. This mean.; that the bottom hole pressure of a well after hut-in will rise in such a manner that a plot of pressure against the logaritllm of time yields a straight line. Most underground mining operations are dependent on pumping installations to keep the mine unwatered. The reliability of such installations is obviously of paramount importance. The volume of water to be handled is often considerable, and the total head is relatively high. In these cases, both capital cost and operating expense of the pumping installations will become significant factors in overall mining costs. To insure reliability and to keep efficiencies, and hence operating costs, within acceptable limits it goes without saying that mechanical maintenance of a mine pumping installation must receive scrupulous attention at all times. Large mine pumping installations today almost invariably use multistage centrifugal pumps, since positive-displacement units would not be economically competitive except under very unusual conditions of small volume combined with extremely high heads. Centrifugal pump maintenance, under ideal circumstances, would be confined to parts subject to normal running water, i.e., bearing surfaces, stuffing box packing, and shaft sleeves. Under adverse conditions, however, metal may be lost from the wetted surfaces of a pump by erosive or corrosive action of the pumped fluid, and maintenance costs can easily attain enormous proportions.

THE sessions of the Institute were opened on Tuesday evening, October 26th, at Garrett's Hall, by Mr. Charles A. Otis, Chairman of the Local Committee of Arrangements, who welcomed the Institute to Cleveland, and introduced Col. Charles Whittlesey, who ad¬dressed the Institute briefly on the coal deposits of Ohio. Col. Whittlesey described the situation and character of the coal-beds of the State, and gave a short history of the use of raw coal in the manufacture of pig-iron, and spoke of the excellent quality of metal produced. The aid that a body of scientific miners and metal¬lurgists were capable of giving in the development of coal and other mineral resources was dwelt upon, and the hope expressed that the visit of the Institute to Cleveland might be profitable as, well to its members as to the citizens of the State. The President, Mr. A. L. Holley, responded to the welcome of Mr. Otis and of Col. Whittlesey, and read an introductory address on Some Pressing Needs in the Iron and Steel Manufacture. The chloridizing mill of the Standard Reduction Co. is located about 75 miles south of Salt Lake City on the Tintic branch of the Denver & Rio Grande Western R. R. and 12 miles from the Tintic Standard mine. The daily capacity is 200 toss of a siliceous, low-grade, silver-lead ore from this property. It has operated continuously since it was started in January, 1921. The process consists essentially of a chloridizing roast followed by a percolating leach with a nearly saturated solution of common salt, acidified with sulfuric acid, the precipitation of silver on sponge copper and of copper and lead on tin-plate cuttings. The precipitates are shipped to a smelter. Some of the general ideas involved are said to have been used by Augustin in England, in 1840. A number of textbooks treat of the subject, especially the chloridizing roast followed by a leach with sodium hyposulfite or amalgamation. The process was revived in this district by Theo. P. Holt, N. C. Christensen, the Bureau of Mines, and others. The lead may be present as carbonate, sulfide, or sulfate.

CINNABAR was discovered in southwestern Arkansas on Little Missouri River in sec. 1, T.7S., R.26W., in April, 1930, and near Antoine Creek in sec. 28, T.6S., R.23W., some 15 miles farther east in May of the same year. It was not, however, until June, 1931, that cinnabar was identified as such in a specimen from the original discovery area sent to W. M. Weigel1 by Walter F. Hintze of Murfreesboro. Almost simultaneously2, in July, 1931, Moritz Norden of Hot Springs identified specimens from the Antoine Creek area as cinnabar. Immediate interest in the district followed the identification of cinnabar and by January, 1932, the district was known to extend as a mineralized belt about one mile wide trending east-northeast from sec. 13, T.7S., R.27W., in Howard County-across central Pike County and into Clark County to sec. 19, T.6S., R.23W., thence extending southeast into sections 33 and 34 of the same township. Since then, cinnabar has been found in sec. 6, T.7S., R.22W., thus giving a total east-west length to the district of approximately 30 miles. Interest focused mainly on the two discovery areas, with the result that mining development has progressed most rapidly in those localities. In the Antoine Creek area the Arkansas Quicksilver Co. has done con-siderable exploration work and has retorted the high-grade ore so .obtained. In the Little Missouri area the Southwestern Quicksilver Co. has had a 12-ton rotary furnace in more or less continuous operation since April, 1932, and has been the largest producer in the district.

THE LIFE and works of Alexander Agassiz, first president of the Calumet & Hecla Mining Co., were recalled to memory when a monument bearing his statue was unveiled in Agassiz Park, at Calumet, Mich., on Sept. 26, The statue is the work of Paul W. Bartlett, of New York, and was erected by George R. Agassiz, eldest son of Alexander Agassiz. We are indebted to Rodolphe L. Agassiz, now president of the Calumet & Hecla Consolidated, for the accompanying photograph of the statue. The principal address at the unveiling ceremony was delivered by Allen F. Rees, of Houghton, who said, in part: To the world at large Alexander Agassiz was preeminently the man of science. With all his devotion to the industrial life of this district, he found the time to devote to the con-tinuation of his work of scientific research which had been the life work of his fa-ther, Louis Agassiz. Not only did he acquire eminence for his scientific at-tainments and learn-ing, but he was recognized and hon-ored throughout the civilized world for his achievements and accomplishments in the realm of original research. His work in the fields of nat-ural science, in oceanography, in marine zoology, and in other similar lines of research, has added much to our knowledge of the world's mysteries. His life was one of accomplishment also in the industrial world. The union in one life of acknowledged achievement as a scientist and the accomplishment of great results in the prac-tical industrial world is a rare thing, and its possibility has never been exemplified in greater measure than in his life and its results.

Iron King mine, producing gold-silver-lead-zinc-ore, is 10 miles east of Prescott, Ariz. At present the 1806 level is being developed. The echelon pat tern of ore deposit continues at depth but is less pronounced, and the orebody is now more or less continuous over 2600 ft of strike length, with widths 5 ft to as high as 26 ft where overlapping of lenses occurs in one section of the mine. Better continuity of ore at depth has encouraged systematic mining and improved plant facilities to offset higher operating costs. With favorable persistence of ore at depth, the three-compartment No. 6 hoisting shaft appeared inadequate to handle increased tonnage from greater depths, and in 1952, a four-compartment steel and concrete shaft was started. This is now at a depth of 1906 ft, and shaft pockets and loading cartridges are being installed on the 1806 level. Ore from the new shaft, hoisted in 5 ½ -ton Jeto bottom dump skips, is dumped into a 500-ton shaft bin, from which it is fed to a 16x30-in. gyratory crusher and conveyed 415 ft through an undersurface concrete gallery to the secondary crusher and conveying system supplying the 900-ton mill. Lead, zinc, and pyrite concentrates are floated, and the flotation tailings are cyanided after desliming. Waste from the new shaft is dumped into a 250-ton surge bin, fed from this bin to a 24-in. conveyor, and discharged into the glory hole above the block cave. The new shaft is served by a double-drum 400-hp hoist used for ore and waste; the No. 6 shaft conveys men and material.

IN speaking, on the subject, "Engineer-Citizens," at the Lehigh Valley Mineral Industries Conference dinner, on April 26, at Easton, Pa., George Otis Smith, Director of the United States Geological Survey and President of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, said in part: "It would be carrying coke to Connellsville to bring to the Lehigh Valley the idea that mineral resources are the foundation of national prosperity. Unfortu-nately, however, this obvious, fact is not everywhere recognized. Too many of our economists, journalists, statesmen and other dopesters of present business con-ditions stress the human factor so strongly that they overlook the material with which men work out their destiny. To them the financial psychology of Wall Street and the political logic of Capitol Hill and the business commonplaces of Main Street all loom far larger than the geology of the Lehigh Valley or the engineering triumphs of Bethlehem, or, the creative thinking at Lehigh and Lafayette. "The present situation in the industrial and .business world is a complex of interacting causes and reacting effects not easily itemized and entered on our trial balance sheet. But, chief among the liabilities of today is the excess of production capacity in most branches of industry. The farmer has no. monopoly in his desire for relief. Whether your professional connections are with steel or cement, coal or oil, copper, or zinc, you; know too well that for, the moment America is over-engined, and you keenly realize the ever-present hazard of industry speeding up regardless of the curves or grades just around the corner.

The Lucky Friday mine east of Mullan, Idaho, is an outstanding example of a property in the Coeur d’Alene district where a small and insignificant- appearing silver-lead-zinc vein at the surface has changed at depth into a large vein of great importance. The Lucky Friday vein has little if any surface expression and above the 1200 level the ore shoots are small and discontinuous. Between the 1200 level and 2450 level, the lowest developed level, the main ore shoot has shown remarkable improvement on each succeeding lower level, and today the mine is one of the major lead-silver producers in the Coeur d'Alene district. History: The Lucky Friday property is on the north side of the South Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River in sections 25, 26 and 35, T. 48 N., R. 5 E., Hunter mining district, Shoshone County, Idaho. This is about one mile east of the town of Mullan, which serves the eastern portion of the Coeur d'Alene district. The southern part of the property is crossed by a branch line of the Northern Pacific Ry. and by U. S. Highway 10. This highway is the principal road crossing the panhandle of Idaho and connects the district with Spokane, Wash., on the west and Missoula, Mont., on the east. The main portal and surface plant of the Lucky Friday mine is at an elevation of 3365 ft, only a short distance above the valley floor and a few hundred feet from U. S. Highway 10, so the mine is readily accessible for year-round operation.

THE classification and preparation of non-ferrous scrap metals is a subject of interest to every individual and corporation that employs in its processes of manufacture non-ferrous metals and alloys and accumulates in such manufacture scrap from these materials for disposition in the form of turnings, borings, short ends, punchings, clippings, grindings, washings, etc. All too frequently the disposition of such scrap is left to individuals who have no knowledge of the subject either from a metallurgical or a commercial standpoint, or both. Much money is thus lost which with a little more intelligent effort might be saved, and in this day of fierce competition and small profits such an opportunity cannot be ignored.
