Australia's iron ore industry is entering a challenging period with the development of new orebodies, the introduction of new products and the push for further downstream processing. In addition, the recent price reductions for iron ore exports have intensified the focus on reducing capital and operating costs. To assist in these areas, CSIRO is expanding its research capabilities, including the incorporation into CSIRO of the Mineral Processing Laboratories in Perth, which were previously managed by the WA Department of Minerals and Energy. In addition, a large part of the $24.4 million expansion of CSIRO's Pinjarra Hills laboratories in Brisbane will be devoted to enhancing iron ore processing research, providing purpose built laboratories and large process bays.

"A 28-year study of cross folds leads to the conclusion that the northwest-southeast folds recognized in many areas of North America are part of a regional pattern. Detailed examination of over 650 geological maps and reports of Ontario indicates that this folding can be traced across the province. Evidence is presented that this fold pattern played an important part in determining the pattern and scale of intrusion, that its recognition in the field can aid in defining stratigraphy, folding and faulting, and that it may have played an important role in channeling hydrothermal or magmatic mineralization. IntroductionThe concept of regional cross folding in Ontario is not new. W.H. Gross (1955) discussed regional cross folds in the Archean of Northwestern Ontario, and A.M. Goodwin (1961) referred to regional cross folds in the Archean of Ontario and Quebec. However, the interpretation in this paper is new.The writer saw a cross fold for the first time, underground, at Little Long Lac Gold Mines in Geraldton, Ontario, in 1951. This recalled the ""transverse folds"" on E.R. Faribault's classical maps of Nova Scotia, published by the Geological Survey around the turn of the century; M.E. Hurst's cross fold(s) at Timmins, Ontario (Figure I); and the cross folds mapped by A.W. Jolliffe in the Yellowknife area of the Northwest Territories. All these mapped cross folds had one thing in common with the fold at Little Long Lac: A northwest-southeast axial trend. Were such cross folds of purely local extent, or might they be indicative of a widespread regional fold pattern? If so, has such folding any significance for mineral exploration or potential?By 1959, based on a study of about 1000 Canadian geological maps and reports, including 291 in Ontario, the writer reached the conclusion that cross folding trending northwest-southeast is so widespread as to constitute a pattern of folding, and that such cross folding should produce changes in plunge along pre-existing greenstone fold belts."

This paper reflects the challenges encountered during the construction of the light rail tunnels under Boyle Heights, in Los Angeles, California. Equipped with two state-of-the-art EPB TBMs, the construction team undertook the mining of twin bored tunnels in the Los Angeles alluvium. The gassy underground conditions dictated many aspects of the design of the tunnels, as well as the tools and means used for their construction. This paper will detail the challenges encountered during construction, as well as the means, methods and logistics used on the project. Discussion includes: EPB TBM machines with some very unique/specific features; complex assembly sequence due to limited shaft access; final precast concrete liner with double gaskets; NATM cross passage excavation in soft ground and below the water table; compensation grouting; mucking shaft arrangement.

Undisturbed minor sedimentary structures-cross-bedding, ripplemarking, scour-and-fill, slumping-are present in most of the rock types in the Willyama Series of the Broken Hill district and in the orebodies.This indicates that there has not been any significant movement of mineral matter within or into the rocks during or after metamorphism, that the rocks have not flowed during tectonic deformation or during metamorphism, and that the ore is an original sedimentary deposit in its sedimentary position.Sedimentary processes, depositional and mechanical, are indicated to explain the deposition of sedimentary metallic minerals and their concentration into large masses. The Broken Hill orebodies show evidence of these processes.INTRODUCTIONI visited Broken Hill for one week in May, 1958, at the invitation of Mr. Haddon F. King, Director of Consolidated Zinc Pty. Ltd. He asked me to examine the rocks and orebodies in the mines and outcrops at Broken Hill for:1. Sedimentary structures that might be used to determine the facing of the banding;2. This paper discusses a study that investigated different underground bulk air heat exchanger (>100 m3/s) design criteria. A literature review found that no single document exists covering all design criteria for different heat exchangers, and therefore the need was identified to generate a guideline with decision analyser steps to arrive at a technical specification. The study investigated the factors influencing heat exchanger designs (spray chambers, towers, and indirect-contact heat exchangers) and the technical requirements for each. The decision analysers can be used to generate optimized, user-friendly fit-for-purpose designs for bulk air heat exchangers (air cooler and heat rejection). The study was tested against a constructed air cooler and heat rejection unit at a copper mine1. It was concluded that the decision analysers were used successfully. This tool (decision analysers) can be used by engineers for the efficient and cost-effectively design of heat exchangers.

The main orebody of the Bodangora mine is a metalliferous quartz reef within a major fault plane in the strongly folded and faulted volcanic rocks of the Ordovician-Silurian Oakdale Formation. The similarity of the type of mineralization to that of other pyrometasomatic deposits in this area suggests that the mineralizing fluids originated in the nearby Wuuluman Granite.The associated Mitchell's Creek West or Dick's reef is discussed briefly.

SOME notes on the works of the Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company of Australia will no doubt be of interest to members of the Institute, more especially as much of the work is new to Australasia. As many of the members who may read this paper have not been in a position to visit works of this kind, and are consequently not thoroughly acquainted with all the operations carried on, the author has taken the liberty, in some cases, to enter into explanation which would otherwise be unnecessary. The works are situated at Port Kembla (New South Wales), about fifty miles south of Sydney, and are approachable both by rail and water. The Government has recently built a low-level jetty upwards of five hundred feet long, and intends installing at an early date an electrically operated portable crane to facilitate the handling of material to and from the boats. This will mean: a considerable reduction in the length of time that boats are laid up at the jetty. There are also under construction two breakwaters, which, when complete, will materially assist shipping operation...

With the exception of occasional periods, when up to 80% of oxidized ore was treated, the G.M.K. plant treated all sulphide ore until October, 1939. The treatment was, briefly, as follows:The ore was ground to approximately 17% plus 200 mesh Tyler and agitated in cyanide solution, after straking. After agitation, the pulp passed through two stages of counter-current decantation washing in Dorr thickeners and was filtered once, to complete the precyanidation stage.The precyanide filter cake was repulped with flotation circuit solution and floated in a Denver Sub A flotation machine, consisting of twelve cells. The concentrates were roasted, cyanided and filtered four times before disposal to the' dam. The flotation tailings were thickened to conserve water and pumped away to a separate dam.The average results of flotation operations for the six months before October, 1939, are shown in Table 1.

Piling work for modification to the Charles Grimes Bridge in Melbourne, Australia required piles to be installed through 15 to 20 m thickness of very soft to soft silty clay overlying 10 m of stiff clays and sands in turn overlying siltstone. The presence of an old sewer founded at depth in the soft clays demanded that vibrations be kept to a minimum. Two pile type were used by Vibro-pile (Australia) to provide the client with the most economical piling price. The two pile types were CFA piles of 750mm diameter founded in the weathered rock and a full displacement concrete injected screw pile developed by Vibro-pile called the "Z" pile, founded on the rock. The development and features of the "Z" pile are briefly discussed, including the perceived applications and advantages of the pile type. On board instrumentation comprising a computer was used to monitor all aspects of the construction. The rig instrumentation provided an important quality control measure that gave confidence in the pile installed. Pile performance was proved on the cast in situ piles by dynamic load testing methods. Initially tests performed with a 120 kN drop hammer, which was not capable of mobilising the required loads. The performance was then satisfactorily proved by using a drop hammer of 20 tonne mass delivering blows drop heights of 1.5m. Low strain integrity tests on a number of piles were also used to confirm the structural integrity of the piles.

This paper will present the results of an analysis of several abandoned coal mine projects and includes field data for over a dozen different reclamation projects recently completed in the state of West Virginia. The analysis was performed with the objective of summarizing and or classification of the environmental consequences with reference to the characteristics of the mining facilities (surface, underground, etc.). The analysis also addressed the itemized cost of remediation with respect to procedures, environmental concerns and time. The results of the analysis are that each abandoned coal mine site in West Virginia have/had many unique features and in most cases include a combination of environmental concerns that complicate comparisons. The study also revealed that the abandoned mine land program for mines abandoned prior to 1977, that is being financed by a tax on the production of coal, has produced many benefits for the state of West Virginia. This grant program administered by the Office of Surface Mining, has resulted in a high quality methodology of remediation that has been successful for many years in greatly minimizing and/or eliminating environmental concerns from abandoned coal mines.

Uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and shear strength parameters(cohesion and angle of internal friction, Cand F) of rocks are important parameters needed for various engineering projects such as tunnelling and slope stability. However, direct determination of these parameters is difficult and requires high-quality core samples for tests. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the applicability of the Brazilian test (BT) - a simple, less sophisticated and inexpensive method for both specimen preparation and testing - to estimate the UCS and shear strength parameters of rocks. Thirty-seven rock types were sampled and tested, 24of which were volcanic, 8 were metamorphic, and 5 were sedimentary. Statistical equations were derived to estimate the UCS and shear strength parameters of rocks using the BT. The validity of the statistically derived equations was confirmed using predictive analytics software (PASW Statistics 18). A strong linear relation was found between BT and UCS values. BT and UCS values exhibited prominent linear correlations withthe cohesion values of rocks. The Mohr envelope was also used to determine the cohesion and friction angle of rocks using BT and UCS values. It is deduced from the current study that the BT values can be used to estimate the UCS and cohesion. However, no relation was observed between the angle of internal friction values and the UCS and BT for all rock types. Therefore, different approaches are suggested for the estimation of the internal angle of friction for application in the preliminary design of projects.

Mintek has been developing Pt-based alloys for high temperature applications in aggressive environments, for example, land-based turbine engines, to replace the currently used nickel-based superalloys (NBSAs). The Pt-based alloys have a similar structure to the NBSAs, and since Pt is more chemically inert and has a higher melting point, the Pt-based alloys can potentially be used at higher temperatures. The greater chemical inertness of the Pt-based alloys compared to the NBSAs means that coatings can be simpler, or perhaps not even used at all, depending on the environment. TEM work was done at NIMS, Japan, to investigate the changes in the microstructure o f Pt-Al and Pt-Al-Ir alloys at elevated temperatures using in-situheating up to1100°C. Initial casting trials showed that work needs to be done to optimise casting parameters before commercialisation can take place. Room temperature tensile tests were performed and results were variable mainly due to microstructural differences. The alloy hardnesses were in the order of 300-350HV with ultimate tensile strengths of ~800 MPa and elongations of less than 10%. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Sc. (Eng.) (Metallurgy and Materials) degree Corrosion in exhaust systems can occur on both the interior and exterior surfaces. Chloride-containing de-icing salts on the roads in colder countries greatly increases the rate of corrosion on the exterior surfaces. This paper investigates the relative exterior corrosion resistance of three alloys?two ferritic stainless steels( AISI Types 409 and 441) and an aluminized mild steel. The exhaust system is split into two categories?the hot end and the cold end. A test for each of these ends was designed?the standard ASTM G85test was modified to create a simulated driving cycle. The cold end test samples were exposed to ten driving cycles, and the hot end test samples were exposed to five driving cycles. A driving cycle constitutes the car being started from cold, driven until the operating temperatures are reached, and switched off and allowed to cool. Pitting corrosion is the primary corrosion mechanism occurring at the cold end of the exhaust system. The aluminized mild steel was the most resistant alloy in this test, and Type 409 the least. However, once the protective aluminium layer degrades, corrosion will occur rapidly. At the hot end of the exhaust system, spalling of the surface oxide layer is the primary corrosion mechanism occurring. Type 441 was the most resistant in this test, and the aluminized mild steel the least resistant. Potentiodynamic tests were performed on the alloys?the results agreed with the results obtained in the exposure tests.

The mesothermal quartz-scheelite lodes of the Wakamarina valley are one of twelve known mined or prospected gold-bearing areas in the Marlborough Schist. Recorded production was 556 kg gold, a little silver, and c. 390 t scheelite. 134 m of the 1800 m long Golden Bar reef are accessible in the No 2 level of the Golden Bar mine. The reef is a typical multi-banded mesothermal vein, mostly c. 1.75 m wide, enclosing narrow horses of schist country rock. Scheelite is sparsely distributed, and is more common in small veinlets in the hanging wall schist. The country rocks are textural zone I-1m schists of prehnite-pumpellyite to pumpellyite-actinolite metamorphic facies. Their geochemistry suggests they are part of the Caples Terrane, and of calc-alkaline volcanogenic arc origin. The associated Wakamarina Quartzite is strongly recumbent folded, and of the same metamorphic grade, with abundant pumpellyite, stilpnomelane, and garnet, presumably spessartine. Although it has geochemical signatures of a deep sea sediment, it is depleted in Cr and Cu, and greatly enhanced in K and Ti, when compared with a standard chert. It also has trace element characteristics of a calc-alkaline arc-related sediment. However, associated greenschist has MORB-like incompatible element chemistry. The Golden Bar reef lies within a steeply dipping, normal to transtensional dip-slip fault adjacent to a shallow-dipping mylonite shear zone, which, at least on the footwall side, is 040 m wide. The shear foliation has been severely dragged down to nearly parallel the Golden Bar reef within 1 m of the quartz lode. Preliminary structural analysis suggests that the shear zone is extensional. X-ray diffraction analyses of the wall rocks show a progressive depletion of amphibole, stilpnomelane, and pumpellyite towards the reef, and enhanced illite/muscovite and Kfeldspar adjacent to the lode, along with possible graphitic carbon within 10m. Two zones of intense quartz veining occur, one adjacent to the hanging wall for 12 m and one from 40 m outwards. Quartz vein systems in the country rock are complex and span from pre-schistosity to post-mylonite. They include multiple generations of quartz, actinolite, stilpnomelane, pumpellyite, albite, adularia, chlorites, illite/muscovite, calcite, and scheelite. Metal analyses across the Golden Bar reef showed gold values of 0.13.1 ppm, and low tungsten values, consistent with the observed sporadic scheelite occurrences. As and Sb are at background levels, but enhanced Cr (150 - 430 ppm) relative to the schists (30 - 41 ppm) suggests that the source hydrothermal fluids passed through and leached mafic to ultramafic rocks.

A new probabilistic approach is introduced for slope stability analysis including adverse impact of blasting vibrations. The material strength within a slope area is randomized in this bi-variate joint probability analysis. To be a completely general engineering method, the new probabilistic approach employs the random variable transformation technique; the Hermite model of the Gaussian transformation function, which transforms the experimental histogram of strength values to the standard Gaussian variables. Because bi-normal joint probability is analyzed on the true probability region projected on the Gaussian transformed variable plane, it is an exact solution of slope stability based on the available sample data. Details of the probabilistic approach are given through a case study on an iron ore mine. The case study demonstrated that the probabilistic approach is effective and simple enough to be a routine engineering practice for slope analysis.

Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use block cave mining method which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment and recover the ore. It was also the first hard rock mine to use hydraulic fracturing, in conjunction with CSIRO, to promote caving of E26 Lift 1. The technique was later used on E26 Lift 2 wedge and E48 prior to undercutting.Northparkes production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and E26SLC. The E48 block cave contains economic ore to the north and south of the current cave footprint. To recover this ore the footprint has been extended on the north and south with two extraction drives and one extraction drive, respectively. Modelling of cavability above the additional drives indicated that the cave would not readily propagate to a sufficient height of draw to mobilise the ore and tended to arch over into the existing cave. To address the modelling results and to reduce the risk of the project, rock mass preconditioning was adopted.This fracturing campaign was performed from surface drill holes adjacent the subsidence zone angled to intersect the higher grade and higher elevation ore zones.Optical televiewer surveys, run prior to fracturing, picked intervals and fault zones to be avoided. Holes were resurveyed post-fracturing to detect newly created fractures and as a measure of success of the program.During fracturing operations water and gel fractures were run at varying depths and pumping pressure was logged for each fracture. The mine seismic system monitored significant events and dye in the fluids utilised for tracking water inflow locations during underground inspections.Towards the end of the project, guar fibres from gel were detected within the mill circuit and required treatment to resume optimum processing.CITATION:Webster, S, Snyman, L and Samosir, J, 2016. Being a geologist I intend describing the renaissance of the gold industry in Australia within its geologic framework; there is a geological pattern to the numerous gold projects which have been brought on stream over the past decade. We are now about midway through our third and largest gold boom which, at a peak of 7.5 million ounces is about twice the production peaks achieved in the preceding booms. From discovery in 1851 through 1870 we saw the first boom largely based on alluvial production in NSW and in Victoria at the great Ballarat and Bendigo Goldfields. The discovery of the Golden Mile in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, underpinned the second gold boom in the period 1895 - 1915. On that basis the present boom should last through the next decade.   It has been a golden decade for Australian gold production. From less than ten mines in 1980 with production over 10 000 ounces and the largest, Telfer, with output of about 130 000 ounces we now find over 130 deposits being worked around the country today that produce over 10 000 ounces with the largest, Boddington, having an output of over 400 000 ounces. In total these mines produced an estimated 210 tonnes of gold in 1989 and we expect this year, 1990, that a new record production of between 240 and 250 tonnes will be set. This positions Australia in third place in the Western World behind South Africa #1 and the USA #2 and fourth in the world with the Russians holding second place overall behind the South Africans.

Subsurface disposal of oil-field brines was practiced in Oklahoma on a limited scale as early as 1925. The technique of subsurface injection has been improved immensely and has been applied with varying success in many oil-producing areas in Oklahoma, and elsewhere. This method of disposal, however, is only one of several methods available to operators of oil-producing properties, but, in contrast with usual methods of handling brines on the surface it eliminates the damaging effect of mineralized water on fresh-water supplies, vegetation, and aquatic and other animal life. Other methods of brine disposal approved by regulatory agencies in some States include (1) impounding in impervious ponds and solar evaporation, (2) controlled diversion into surface waters, and (3) recovery of the mineral salts of the brine. In most States where oil is produced regulatory bodies authorize the use of one or more of these methods of brine disposal. In Oklahoma, for example, the .Oklahoma Planning and Resources Board of the Conservation Commission has been authorized4/ to adopt whatever methods or means may be necessary to prevent contamination by mineralization of all potable waters within the State.

Most underground mines rely on ore pass systems to ensure the transport of ore and waste. The design and operation of ore pass systems often rely on past experience, which is often anecdotal and at times contradictory in nature. This paper summarizes the current practice in Quebec underground metaliferous mines. The information was collected during a series of site visits in ten underground mines. The database includes information on ore pass configuration, support, materials transited, and overall ore pass performance.
