This paper is intended partly as a summary of the conclusions that have been arrived at by various authorities on this matter, and also with a view to initiate some discussion on the subject, especially as most of the quartz gold mines in Victoria are operated without having any proper assay plans or any idea of the real values other than those given by the mining managers, who, from experience in the particular cases, are supposed to be able to arrive at a correct idea of the true values of- the ore, and, in many cases, oppose any other methods than their own, holding the view that no sampling is equal in correctness to the bulk sample of the battery. The necessity of properly sampling and estimating the ore in a mine in every case, perhaps hardly needs to be urged on the members of the Institute, but is not, apparently, so obvious to others.It is proposed to confine this paper to the sampling of ore reserves in a mine, and the various points which have to be taken into consideration in arriving at values, from the assayer's point of view, leaving the methods of sampling metallurgical products out of consideration for the present. "It is advisable to define" ore reserves" as ore exposed on three sides at least, and accessible to the sampler on all three. "Prospective ore" would include all ore not so fully exposed; but which may, from the nature of the case, and the geological conditions prevailing, be reasonably supposed to exist.

Different types of lump iron ore-bearing particles were investigated in terms of their raw material properties depending on their behaviour during reduction. To predict the reduction behaviour different types of lump iron ore and pellet brands were characterised by their mineral abundance, texture and pore size. The image processing software VisuMet was developed to semi-automate the evaluation of photomicrographs from polished sections of lumpy iron particles. The results were compared to the standard reducibility test after ISO 4695. The evaluation of lump iron ores is based on the simulation of the transformation of the different iron minerals due to their sequence of reducibility. The progress of the reduction front is simulated and the result is a degradation curve. Pellets were also investigated due to their different pore size distribution. The results indicate that the pore size influences the reducibility in addition to mineral abundance. The evaluation with VisuMet of the lump iron ore and pellet samples correlates with the reducibility provided by the ISO 4695 test. The determination of the mineral abundance by VisuMet is comparable to common point counting with a correlation coefficient of 99.67 per cent.CITATION:Kain-Bückner, B and Mali, H, 2017. The investigation of the potential of the Webb/Baynes block of the Buller coalfield for anode carbon manufacture has generated much information on the physical beneficiation characteristics of the Buller coals in general. A further 36 drill holes of the block in question and several other samples have been analysed by sink/float analysis, either at a single density or over a range of densities. In addition, many samples have been beneficiated on a laboratory shaking table or by flotation. The ash content can be reduced by a variable factor. The reduction factor of between two and four by sink/float analysts is understandably less for tabling where separation is not perfect. All Buller coals behave similarly, there being greater ash reduction factors for higher ash coals.

During the past Two years in reef gold mining, "indicators" have received great attention at the hands at the Victorian gold seekers. Many years ago, what was caned the" indicator lode," was struck in Ballarat East, on the course of which extremely rich deposits of gold were discovered but as to its being a .qeneral experience in reefs or leaders no one ever dreamed. Now, however, we find that these "indicators" are frequently to be met with, though they differ very much in different localities, making it, therefore, a difficult matter for other than a careful minel' to follow them. The necessity of following "indicators" for the purpose of developing gold is now recognized, and the policy of following them up has been attended with much success in this field. In the case of Messrs Shaw and Sons, at Wedderburn, those gentlemen began to work on an "indicator" here five years ago, and immediately thereafter more by accident than anything else they being at that time inexperienced as regards "indicators " came upon gold bearing quartz, which continued payable so long as the" indicator" aud the stone were in conjunction with each other, but as soon as they parted company the stone ceasedto be of any value then, by following the" indicator," as the latter intersected fresh bodies of stone they proved again more or less payable, until a fortnight or so ago the Messrs. Shaw turned out 4 tons of stone, which yielded £1,825, with also profitable workingup to the present moment. Where they are now working is a mile north of their original find thus proving that "indicators" travel considerable distances and have something to do with the gold deposits found in reefs. On the direct course of Shaw's "indicator," as high as hundreds of ozs to the ton was obtained from the stone but, just a few inches from either side in the same" leader," not a colour could be got. Whatever the cause-whether by electricity or some unknown force in nature-the gold is found on the course of these" indicators" and nowhere else, and-as each of the Victorian Government Geologists admit-their value to the gold-seeker as a means of leading to' gold cannot be over-estimated.

After relining one of two blast furnaces and enlarging its sinter plant in 2009, BlueScope radically restructured its Port Kembla steelworks operation in 2011, shutting a blast furnace and halving its total production. This drastic move in response to unprecedented raw material prices relative to achievable steel prices was like that of many integrated steelmakers worldwide facing similar challenges. The 2011 restructure also saw major changes in the amount and type of iron ores and ferrous burdens purchased, and a fundamental reappraising of ‘value’ in iron ores. This paper outlines the changes to raw materials purchases from 2011 to 2017, how BlueScope has responded to the changes in pricing and raw materials quality, the effect on the sintering and blast furnace processes at Port Kembla resulting from higher gangue content, some of the broad technical and economic challenges faced by steelmakers confronted with lower quality iron ores and how BlueScope is meeting those challenges.CITATION:Di Giorgio, N, Bennett, A, Osborne, B and Chew, S, 2017. Three methods of gold analysis are briefly described highlighting some of the problems and advantages of each. The variation of results between samples and splits and due to method of preparation is illustrated. The mean per cent difference of the fire assay values from the means of sample split values for three cases is 15 per cent.Finally, a comparison of the aqua regia leach atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and fire assay fusion AAS techniques is made.This shows that the mean precision, the ability to obtain the same value, of the methods at 98 per cent confidence is ± 30 per cent and ± 15 per cent respectively. The fire assay fusion AAS method is relatively more accurate than the aqua regia one.

In the present study, formation of PCDD/Fs from carbon particles like æsootÆ, so called de novo synthesis, was experimentally simulated using the powder mixture of graphite and metallic chloride. Composite states of graphite and chloride particles were varied by the preliminary treatment, ie high-energy ball milling for different time or heating at different temperatures. These samples were subjected to the measurement of the rates of weight loss mainly due to the oxidation of carbon, the formation of absorbent organic chlorides (AOX) and the formation of PCDD/Fs at 300¦C. The amount of PCDD/Fs formation increased by applying certain pretreatments. Further, linear relationships were obtained among the formation rates of PCDD/Fs and AOX and the weight loss of sample. These results will give useful information to investigate the mechanism of PCDD/Fs formation from unburned combustible carbon and hydrocarbon in thermal processes.

Although the Pressure Acid Leaching (PAL) of nickel laterites has been conducted at Moa Bay, Cuba, since the early 1960s, the commissioning delays generally encountered by the æsecond generationÆ of PAL lateritic nickel producers in the late 1990s have demonstrated the potential complexity of the PAL process and the importance of technical risk management in maximising the realised project value. This paper describes some of the strategies used by the Ravensthorpe Nickel Project (RNP) to manage the technical aspects of the Ravensthorpe project risk. Central to these strategies is the use of Front End Loading (FEL) to deal with issues early in the development phase, when changes to the project structure can be made most effectively and cheaply. Such an approach requires a management philosophy that recognises risk as a potential cost, which accepts responsibility for dealing with risk, and which is prepared to provide adequate resources for risk management.

The Nokomai valley is located within the pumpellyite/actinolite facies of the Otago Schist, a regional scale metamorphic belt in Southern New Zealand. The Otago Schist is dominated by psammitic and pelitic greyschist with more subordinate greenschist, quartzite, marble, and ultramafics. Mining in the Nokomai, began in the 1860s, with sluicing of terrace gravels in the lower valley. Good gold is reported to have been won from unconformities within very weathered gravels lower in the terrace sequences, and particularly from within channels which dissect these older deposits. Gold was recovered from these terraces in the main Nokomai Valley, and two major tributaries (Victoria Gully and Bullock Head Creek). In the period 1885 - 1887 further gold was discovered in basal gravels beneath the Nokomai flats when the Hunter brothers sank two shafts and excavated a connecting drive to discover a lead 1.2 - 1.5 m thick. The Golden Lion Sluicing Company began mining in 1896 using an hydraulic elevator on the very 'tight' 1.8 - 2.4 m of basal gravels. This operation was followed by the Nokomai Gold Sluicing Company whose average return grade was >485 mglm3 until mining ceased in 1943 (Wopereis; 1988, 1989). A quartz vein, Commissioners Reef, was worked for small production at some time during the 1920 - 1930 period, until fault termination of the vein ceased production.

Laboratory induced polarization measurements were made on representative samples of concentrated sulphide ores from three environments in New South Wales Comparisons were made with the membrane polarization exhibited by an argillaceous sandstone. The sulphide samples showed a strong polarization effect, the magmtude of whIch depended directly on the conductivity of tlIe pore electrolyte.

In this paper, the scientific bases of creation of simulation modelling systems of excavator-truck-conveyor complex work are represented. During the simulation modelling process of big mining and transport systems work the strict and full account of an order and sequence of all operations of simulated process is carried out. Step-by-step fixing of mining and transport system elements condition - excavators in loading and unloading points, trucks, road section, unloading points in storage bin, crushers and conveyors is conducted. Work and idle time of system elements are considered. During modelling process the information characterising system work as a whole is collected. It allows us to establish qualitative and quantitative influence of each system element on the final results of its functioning and provides to estimate rationality of a particular organisation variant of mining and transport equipment interaction from technological positions. Simulation results are: economic and technological indicators of mining and transport complex functioning of the period for each subsystem, as well as on the road, the points of loading, unloading and reloading.

Consents Required for Overseas Persons Overseas Investment Regulations 1974 Foreign investment proposals must be reviewed by the Overseas Investment Commission to ensure that these are in accord with national interests. Consent must be obtained from the Commission for: 1. New investment proposals which include: a. An overseas person acquiring 25 per cent or more of any class of share in a company. b. A New Zealand company issuing shares to an overseas person where this will result in that person owning 25 per cent or more of the company. c. An overseas person acquiring business assets for consideration in excess of $100 000. d. An overseas person commencing business in New Zealand. 2. Borrowing in New Zealand: An overseas person must obtain consent to raise funds in excess of $300 000 in New Zealand. 3. Borrowing Overseas: New Zealand incorporated companies must obtain consent to borrow overseas. Current policy is borrowing will be approved where the loan is for a specified fixed term of one year or more.

Stockyard operations are governed by the interaction between the different disciplines required to successfully schedule and control the supply chain of raw material through the stockyard in combination with the effectivity of the operation of the stockyard equipment. The system demonstrates a proven technology for implementing a centralised operation of full unmanned stockyard equipment, using a high precision absolute positioning system based on a Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers in combination with 3D rangefinders. The system implementation maps the surface profile of the stockyard inventory and allows in combination with proprietary algorithms for full operation of the stockyard machines without on-board operators. The operational impact of delayering the process by moving to a centralised operation is examined, together with the combined effect on the overall safety in the stockyard as a result of a change in reliance on operator skill dependencies. Average performance gains range from 10–20 per cent. The performance of the automation system is related to a consistency and reliability of uniform operation, which has an impact on the life expectancy and the effectiveness of the equipment. The effects of having instantaneous and correct information about the stockyard inventory volume measurement are investigated in relation towards spot price trading in current fast reacting markets.CITATION:Stefansen, R, 2017.
