BACKGROUND This paper discusses work performed as part the rehabilitation of the gravity flow section of the New Croton Aqueduct (NCA) during an approximately two year period between 2004 and 2006. The goal of the project was to restore the gravity flow section of the NCA to optimal operating condition, extending the lifespan of this significant water supply for the New York City metropolitan area. Rehabilitation of the NCA was purposely scheduled before the completion of the new NCA Water Treatment Plant now under construction (Figure 1). The NCA is a 3.73 to 4.34 m (12.25 to 14.25 ft) diameter brick-lined circular andhorseshoe shaped water tunnel constructed between 1885 and 1891. The NCA conveys water for approximately 50 km (31 miles) by gravity and pressurized flow from the New Croton Reservoir in Westchester County, NY to distribution and reservoir points along its alignment, terminating at a distribution station at 135th Street and Convent Avenue in Manhattan, NY. Prominent features of the NCA include a large intake facility at New Croton Reservoir, 38.6 km (24 miles) of gravity flow horseshoe shaped aqueduct, 11.3 km (7 miles) of pressurized flow circular aqueduct, 2 siphons, and 36 open shafts and headhouse chambers which are used as sampling, access and blow-off locations. Until a partial inspection in 1982, the NCA had flowed continuously since its completion nearly 100 years prior. Flow tests have confirmed that the NCA can convey up to 12.7 m3/s (290 mgd) (Figure 2). Cover depths of NCA vary considerably, ranging from a few to hundreds of meters, typically of hard rock. Primarily mined using means conventional for the late1800s, construction of the NCA also employed cut and cover methods in several low-lying sections of the alignment, totaling approximately 1.6 km (1 mile). The NCA crosses through numerous lithologic changes, fault/shear zones and under several significant water bodies including the Pocantico, Saw Mill and Harlem Rivers and the Tarrytown Reservoir. The NCA passes under the Harlem River as a siphon at a depth of approximately 122 m (400 ft) below grade (Figure 3). Soon after construction the Aqueduct Commission Reports on the New Croton Aqueduct documented prominent defects such as large voids behind the lining. More recently, large-scale inspections of the gravity flow section performed during the 1990sand a 2004 inspection of portions of the pressurized sections of the NCA have revealed additional defects such as open and/or deteriorated masonry joints/cracks, leaks ranging from trickles to several liters per minute into and out of the NCA, missing bricks, formed openings, and in one place, a rupture through the liner with discernable

Concentrations of bright green material in the "Golden Mile" of Kalgoorlie, which carry particularly high gold values, are known locally as "green leader".This assemblage consists largely of quartz, sericitic muscovite, carbonates, and pyrite. Some of the sericitic muscovite contains vanadium, giving the rock its green colour. Vanadium oxides, including nolanite, are also present. Tellurides identified in this study are calaverite, altaite, petzite, melonite, and coloradoite. Native gold was found in most of the samples; some of the gold, at least, has been formed from the decomposition of gold tellurides.It is suggested that mineralizing solutions carrying gold and tellurium leached vanadium from the host rocks and subsequently deposited gold tellurides and vanadium-bearing minerals in the "green leader".

The usefulness of laboratory studies - petrology and mineragraphy in the search for, and investigation of, mineral deposits should not be exaggerated, but it should not be overlooked, because such studies will always contribute to an understanding of the geology of the deposits, and can on occasions provide invaluable information not otherwise available. A few examples furnished by the investigations of the Mineragraphic Section of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation will show this.Petrology.In the early stages of the investigation of the King Island scheelite deposit, during the war, when the nature of, the deposit was not understood, a series of samples embodying the exposed rock types was submitted to the Mineragrap;hic Section for petrologicalexamination by the Mineral Resources Survey. It was at once apparent to the petrologist that the King Island scheelite ore was a contact metamorphic deposit, in which a series of argillaceous shales, calcareous shales, impure limestones and limestones had beenintensely metamorphosed. The shales had been converted to finegrained biotite and actinolite hornfels, according to their lime content, and the impure limestones to fine-grained diopside hornfels, garnetdiopside hornfels and garnet hornfels (calc-flint), the garnet being the lime variety grossularite. The limestones, however, after being first converted to marbles, had suffered intense pyrometasomatism, involving substitution of immense quantities ,of silica and' iron for lime and carbonate, and had been converted largely to a coarsegrained garnet rock, in which the garnet was the lime-iron variety, andradite. The silica and iron were derived from the mineralising solutions of the adja,cent ,granite. intrusion, responsible for the contact metamorphism, and were accompanied by tungsten and some molybdenum. The tungsten in the presence of so much mobile lime, was precipitated as schecelite, much of it finegrained and enclosed in or intergrown, with the andradite garnet or the quartz interstitial to the garnet.It was apparent that the King Island scheelite deposit, was a perfect example of selective pyrometallomatic replacement in a bedded contact metamorphic deposit. The bedded nature of the original rocks was preserved, and the scheelite was practically limited to the original limestone beds, 'Which had been so much more susceptible to replacement after recrystallization, than the other sediments. The further geological study of the deposit then resolved itself into the task of mapping the folding and faulting of the deposit, with bore cores to provide the stratigraphic sequence, and establish the number of scheelite-bearing beds.A second example is provided by a petrological investigation of the mineral composition and genesis of the talc deposits of the Gumeracha district of South Austral.ia, which was undertaken at the request of the South Australian ,Mines Department, in conjunctionwith mapping of these deposits. Lacustrine sediments, hydrothermal explosion breccias and spring precipitates deposited 5200 - 1800 years BP as a result of geothermal activity at Lake Rotokaua, contain New Zealand's largest known sulphur reserves. Current drill indicated reserves are 2 600 000 tonnes of elemental sulphur, assuming a ten per cent (dry basis) cut-off, contained in some 17 000 000 tonnes of ore with an average grade of 214.0 per cent (dry basis) sulphur. Additional inferred ore containing 500 000 - 900 000 tonnes of sulphur has yet to be prospected by drilling. Geological factors will be important in exploitation of the deposit, particularly the extent and disposition of the orebody, sulphur grades and distribution, physical characteristics of the ore, permeability and stability of the overburden and the nature and extent of geothermal activity in the area. Trials to date indicate that Frasch mining and possibly opencutting are unlikely to be successful mining methods. Further mining feasibility studies will be required to ascertain the most likely mining system for the deposit.

THE need for standardizing methods of arriving at definite conclusions regarding the cleanability of a given coal, and for measuring the performance of coal-cleaning equipment, is constantly increasing. Earlier notes by the author on this subject are amplified in this paper, because he believes that better preparation of bituminous coal is a partial solution of the coal operators' troubles. WASHABILITY STUDIES The term "washability" of coal was coined when washing was the universal method of separating coal from its impurities by utilizing their difference in specific gravity. This and analogous terms are still used in their broad sense although pneumatic or air separation is now used to clean coal. These terms are so used in this paper. Too much time or money, can hardly be spent on "feed surveys" to get a "picture" of the coal that is to be cleaned. There have been too many "rule of thumb" methods used. Screen analyses and "sink-and-float" tests on the raw coal enable the coal operator and washery man to predict within reasonable limits the results that may be expected from any efficient cleaning apparatus.

This report presents the results of a study examining the relationship between supervisor characteristics and performance in underground coal mines, The specific objectives of the research include; document tasks performed by first-line supervisors during a normal shift; explain why supervisors carry out their duties as they do: identify salient characteristics of effective first-line supervisors; and formulate criteria for selecting and developing candidate supervisors. To accomplish the study objectives, on-site observation and data collection was carried out at 13 underground mines in Illinois, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. One hundred thirty-eight first-line supervisors were observed during a full work-shift and discussions with the supervisors and the mine superintendent were held during the course of the visit. The observational data from the study provide a detailed description of what supervisors to during their shift. The report begins with an introduction discussing the problem being studied and objectives of the research. The literature related to supervisor selection is then reviewed. The following section describes the research design including data collection procedures and statistical methodology used in the study. The next sections present the analysis of mine, section, crew, and supervisor characteristics. The report concludes with a discussion of the results of the study and recommendations concerning supervisor selection and development.

A reliable laboratory method to characterize the response of free gold particles to flash flotation conditions has been developed. The test has been performed on free milling gold ores as well as synthetic ores, using either a gravity concentrate or gold powder as the gold source, to assess the floatability of gold particles. Trends in free gold flotation kinetics, as well as size and milling effects, were identified for gold recovery based on the different feed types, reagent dosages, and residence times. It was shown that the ultimate recoveries and kinetic trends of gold particles from the gravity concentrate could be enhanced with increased dosage of collector, potassium amyl xanthate. Interestingly, in comparison to gravity-recoverable gold, recovery from pure Au powders was better in collectorless flotation, and cumulative recovery decreased with higher levels of collector addition. Improved coarse particle recovery appeared linked to increased collector additions for both the gravity concentrate and the pure gold powders. In general, coarse gold particles demonstrated slower kinetic rates thaen the fine or intermediate components incomparable tests.

The course has been broadened, revised, and brought up to date and is being published as a similar series of seven miners' circulars on accident prevention at metal and nonmetallic mines. These circulars are: 1. Accident Statistics (Miners' Circular 51), dealing with general statistics on accidents and injuries at metal and nonmetallic mines, including causes, costs, and the uses of investigations and reports of all accidents.

Kalgoorlie is the main mining centre of the Western Australian Goldfields. Its famous Golden Mile' has been noted for the exceptional width and richness of its goldtelluride lodes. Since the mid-1890s production on the major mines has been maintained practically continuously.Rich ore, though not as plentiful or as rich as formerly, is still (1948) being mined in places. Unexplored areas still remain within the main auriferous belt which offer reasonable chances of success with intensive exploration.Much detailed information has accumulated in recent years through the geological mapping of underground workings by some of the larger mining companies. The purpose of this paper is to correlate observations made in most of the accessible old and recent workings in the mines of the Lake View and Star group and elsewhere.GENERAL GEOLOGYRock TypesThe rock formations are:-1. Fine-grained (older) greenstones, locally referred to as calc schists. There were originally pillow lavas and other flow rocks of basic composition, now extensively chloritised and/or carbonated. Pillows and fragmental flow- tops are recognisable. Intercalated with flows near the top of the series are several beds of sediments.2. Graphitic slates and other more arenaceous sediments.Although referred to as slates, they are rarely more than well-bedded shales with poorly developed fracture cleavage:Thick bands of felsitic rock are found in places.

A simulation model was used to study the performance of various types of screen cloth on industrial vibrating screens. The model takes into account the effect of loading upon screen performance and predicts both themass flow rate and size distribution of the screen products.It was found that the use of the simulation model allowed the reconstruction of data for identical conditions and hence has simplified the analysis of the comparative performance of the screens. The dependence of performance upon operating conditions was found to vary markedly with screen cloth type.

In view of the large number of wells directionally drilled from offshore platforms and urban drillsites, greater interest is being focused on the directional survey and on the uncertainty inherent in calculating the position of the bottom of the hole, or other benchmarks in the wellbore. Of the two methods presented here for evaluating this uncertainty, the first is analytical and uses the principles of probability and statistics. The second method uses Monte Carlo simulation to generate a pattern of the scatter of possible bottom-hole locations. Both methods are based on a model for which the usual assumption is made that the curvilinear axis of the wellbore is adequately represented by a large number, M, of linear segments joined end to end from the top to the bottom of the hole and closely following the course of the hole. The errors due to this approximation are assumed to be negligible and are not studied here. One form of the model is to consider that for a given hole there exists a perfect set of data describing it, of the above form. Each linear segment has an angle of inclination with the vertical 7, in radians, an azimuthal angle from true north xi in radians, and a length Si, in feet. The subscript variable, i, extends from 1 to M. Each of the M linear segments representing the axis of the wellbore has three components in the X, Y, and Z directions. These components are calculated from the equations: The bottom-hole coordinates as determined from the reference set of data for the wellbore are given by the following for i = 1 to M: X=SX, Y = Sy, Z=SZ; . PolyMet Mining is developing the NorthMet property near Duluth, Minnesota. Laboratory investigations had led to the development of the PLATSOL process to dissolve in one step the base metals (copper and nickel) as well as the gold and PGM’s. To complete the pre-feasibility study, a fully integrated ten-day pilot plant trial was undertaken, comprising of: high temperature (>220ºC) pressure oxidation in the presence of 5-10 g/L chloride (the PLATSOL process), followed by solid/liquid separation, gold plus PGM’s recovery from solution, conventional Cu SX/EW and recycling of the copper raffinate to the autoclave. The concentrate tested was a NorthMet bulk flotation concentrate assaying 14.7% Cu, 3.05% Ni, 0.14% Co, 26.7% S, 1.4 g/t Au, 2.2 g/t Pt and 9.9 g/t Pd. Laboratory results were fully confirmed and with minor adjustments of the laboratory PLATSOL® conditions, the following leach extractions were obtained during the pilot plant trial: Cu 99.6%, Ni 98.9%, Co 96%, Pd 94.6%, Pt 96% and Au 89.4%.

The surface manifestation of underground mining usually entails five distinct types of surface movements, which can affect or damage surface structures, facilities and renewable resources. These movements developing at the surface can be described by (Bell, 1975; Bhattacharya and Singh, 1984): - vertical displacement, i.e. subsidence, - horizontal displacements, - slope or tilt, i.e. the derivative of the vertical displacement with respect to the horizontal distance, - curvature, i.e. the second derivative of the vertical displacement with respect to the horizontal distance, and, - horizontal strain, i.e. the derivative of the horizontal displacement with respect to the horizontal distance.

"INTRODUCTION The character of mine drainage from areas of low pyritic coal3 and from average pyritic coal4 has been investigated, and to complete the study it seemed desirable to select a number of mines situated in high pyritic are as to determine whether or not this variation determines the relative acidity of drainage from mines operating in these characteristic coal fields. Advantage has been taken of some worked on in 1918 by Henry Leighton 5, then Professor of Economic Geology, University of Pittsburgh. He visited and has reported certain areas of high pyritic coal which we also visited during this study. Many of the mines were found to be idle in 1930 and a few were caved shut, apparently for several years. However, samples of the outflow from all mines visited were collected if possible and analyzed, and some general information was gathered for each mine. "INTRODUCTION This paper is one of a series being published by the Bureau of Mines pertaining to an investigation on the use of stemming in metal mines now being conducted at the Mount Weather Testing Adit. Its purpose is to compare the amount of dust and gases produced as a result of blasting charges of dynamite (1) in drill holes, (2) in bombs, and (3) in mud-cap or adobe shots.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSValuable assistance and advice on stemming were given by members of the staff at the Bureau of Mines, as acknowledged in previous publications. 4/TEST PROCEDUREThe results used for comparison in this report are from dust and gas samples taken after blasting (1) four regular test rounds with no stemming, (2) five bomb shots, and (3) two mud-cap or adobe shots.The four rounds were the standard 26-hole test rounds designed to break 4 feet of rock. The procedure for drilling and blasting these rounds is described in Report of Investigations 3509.Before the regular test rounds were blasted, about 1,200 bounds of fine rock was placed on the steel mucking sheets that covered the end of the adit track; the wails, hack, and floor of the adit were washed thoroughly; and the fine rock on the mucking sheets was completely wetted.Each of the 5 bomb shots consisted of 10 sticks of dynamite tied together and hung at midpoint of the adit, 8 feet from the fall."

The reconstruction of the world after the present war must inevitably be profoundly influenced by the rise and progress of New China.The principle of Chinese mathrity has been admitted by Great Britain and the United States by their abjuration of extra-territorial tights, and by the withdrawal of the Maritime Customs Administration. The United States admits equality by her declaration that Chinese are eligible for American citizenship, and the reaction to this will be swift enmity to such peoples as may impose humiliating restrictions upon Chinese citizens.Finally, the decisions of the Moscow Conference and the recent meeting of National leaders in Cairo give partnership rights to this new State in post-war reconstruction, and open the way for a rapid realization of her destiny.It seems certain that China, if so she wills, can become, within a generation or so, one of the considerable forces of the world. The toad she wiII follow will be lighted by her own inherent and intrinsic genius. Her speed of progress can no longer be forcibly influenced by other nations and the attitude towards her of somewhat contemptuous patronage hitherto adopted by the European communities bordering the Pacific Ocean must be radically modified.It is doubtful whether the European will ever reach full understanding of Chinese mentality. The Chinese "way of life" since the dawn of her civilization has been totally divergent from that of the European, but the enormous potential strength, due to the simplicity of their requirements and their steadfast industry, is a function of that "way of life." On the other hand the trend of reorganization must obviously be towards Western standards; and a wide knowledge of the potential strength of the Chinese is possible and will be essential in our post-war world. The following, necessarily inadequate, notes are therefore offered, as an indication of the obstacles to be overcome and the capacity of the Chinese executives and operatives to overcome them.For 'thirteen centuries the political and social structure of China proper (ie, excluding Mongolia, Manchuria and Tibet) has been rigidly shaped by the philosophy of Lao Tze and the ethics' of Confucius. This Taoism, which is described as the "way of harmony" with its three jewels of character, gentleness, economy and humility, advocates the minimum of social, economic and political organization and still gives the key to the Chinese character.The Mongol and Manchu conquests of the 12th and 17th centuries, respectively, could hardly be dignified with the name of war, but the superior intelligence and harder mentality of the unwarlike Chinese finally absorbed...

When asked to lecture at Bendigo on the geological factors that determine the depths of ore deposits, I hesitated for a little before agreeing to lecture on the theory of deep ores in the city world famous as the pioneer of deep gold mining. If there be one place, wherein the conditions of deep-seated ore deposits should be sufficiently well understood, it is the city where the 180 mine made its bold plunge to previously neglected depths; and where the record of that famous mine has been broken by the skill of the managers, and the pluck of the proprietors, of the New Chum Railway and Lazarus mines.In the face of such practical triumphs, theoretical discussion may seem a waste of time, especially since it is often dedared that the existence of such deep-seated ores was denied by geological theory. This assertion is, however, startling since the oldest and best supported geoiogical theory of ore deposits, has taught for more than a century tliat ores must descend far below the regions of practical mining. This charge against Victorian geologists is generally based on opinions attributed to the late Sir Fredrick McCoy. It has been repeatedly affirmed that he declared that gold cannot occur pelow a depth of 300 feet. But so far I have not been able to discover that McCoy ever made any such assertion or ever held such a view.

During the year 1940 a complete investigation was made of the whole of the stoping operations throughout the Great Boulder Mine and, as a result, it was decided to convert some of the existing shrinkage stopes into cut-and-fill stopes, and also to mine many of the more recently developed ore blocks by the latter method. The necessity for filling was due primarily to the structure of the ore blocks, the character of the walls and possible excessive dilution, but was influenced also by the grade of the ore-block and by the fact that cleaner mining can be carried out by cut-and-fill stoping.The comparatively few cut-and-fill stopes in operation prior to 1940 had been filled mainly with waste rock from development work, but as the amount of this material available, or likely to become available, would have been wholly inadequate for future operations, it was proposed to construct a system of passes to supply filling material from the surface.Owing to the distribution of the stopes, no central pass or system of passes could be devised which would service all the stopes satisfactorily.However, work was commenced on two passes, one designed to service the cut-and-fill stopes in the Eastern Section of the mine, and another to service those in the Western Section. It was realised that these passes could serve only a small proportion of the total number of Stopes (Figs. 1 and 2). During the progress of this work experiments were undertaken to test the possibility of using filtered tailings underground as an adjunct to the above scheme, but for various reasons these were only partially completed.Early in 1942 it was suggested by the Mill Superintendent that an attempt be made to fill with wet classified flotation tailings as practised at Mt. Lyell in Tasmania and at the Triton Mine at Reedy, West Australia. For the purpose of testing this, an experimental stope was prepared on the 309-ft. level, "X" Lode. This was 100 feet long and averaged 4 feet in width. Water-tight rearings were built at each end of the stope and waste rock fill was spread to a height of 6 to 8 feet above the timber. Used filter cloths were laid on top of the fill and brought a few feet, up the walls of the stope. A two-inch victaulic drainage line was then placed in position, the end passing through a hole in one of the bearings and thence to a sump. In the central portion of the stope two vertical pipes were brought up from this line. Past failures of coal refuse embankments have resulted in more intensified efforts in inspections of coal refuse sites. Inspections, however, are mainly qualitative and time consuming. In August 1975 CH2M HILL was awarded a contract to identify, develop, and test a rapid system for monitoring coal refuse embankments to aid in inspections. The rapid monitoring system developed uses convergent and vertical photography from conventional fixed-wing aircraft. The system was tested on an active landslide and on two coal refuse facilities using both black and white and color infrared film. Field tests showed the system was capable of accurate measurement while providing qualitative data through photointerpretation. The accuracy of the system allows it to be used to monitor coal refuse embankments, tailings dams, major earth dams, and natural slopes. Bibliographies of literature reviews in the area of past coal refuse embankment failures, monitoring instruments and methods, and photogrammetry are included.
