The hydration kinetics of MgO, namely magnesia or magnesium oxide, obtained by calcination of magnesite MgCO3 or synthetic MgCO3·3H2O has been studied. Nesquehonite (MgCO3·3H2O) was prepared by the reaction of MgCl2 with Na2CO3 in a mixed-suspension mixed-product removal (MSMPR) crystallizer at 40 °C. Three magnesium oxide samples were obtained by calcination of magnesite MgCO3 or synthetic MgCO3·3H2O in muffle furnace at 900, 1100 and 1300 °C for 3 h, respectively. The hydration experiments of MgO samples were investigated at 25, 35 and 45 °C for 24 h in a stirred batch reactor. The hydration results indicate that the rate and extent of hydration of magnesia decreased remarkably with hydration temperature and increased with decreasing calcination temperature at a constant hydration temperature. The whole hydration reaction of magnesia was supposed to experience the promotive period and declining period. An empirical kinetic model ( k t p -?ln(1-??) ??) and a modification of the classical shrinking core model for diffusion control ( k t b d -?-?3 2 ????1 [1 (1 ??) ] ) have been applied to fit the experimental data of hydration in two stages, respectively. The values of kinetic parameters ( p k and d k ) were obtained by regression analysis and the activation energy of the sample at 900 °C was estimated to be 34.23 kJ/mol. The comparison between MgO from calcination of synthetic MgCO3·3H2O and a commercial MgO used in silicon steel production was carried out, indicating that special silicon steel grade MgO can be obtained by calcination of MgCO3·3H2O below 900 °C.

"Greater reliability of mineral deposit and reserve estimates can be attained through better quality control of the data and information acquisition, and the estimation processes. This paper reviews the following key requirements:1. greater awareness of the significant figures of both data and estimates, and better understanding of the probabilistic aspects of the estimates, their confidence limits and margins of error;2. greater reliability of the information that supports the estimates, by more explicit and more rigorous methods and standards for data acquisition and for interpretations;3. more quantitative estimations of geological/mineral continuity, based on improved three dimensional sampling patterns and the use of geostatistics; and 4. better integration at the project engineering and mine production stages, of the mineral deposit characteristics and mining method constraints, for more efficient mineral recovery and mine quality control.RÉSUMÉUne plus grande fiabilité des estimations des gisements et des réserves minières requiert plus d'emphase sur le contrôle de la qualité de I ‘acquisition de l'information et du processus d'estimation. "Sillimanite, kyanite, and andalusite are aluminum silicates having the same chemical composition (Al2Si05) and are used in the ceramic industry for the manufacture of high-grade refractories. ""Natural sillimanite with added corundum or other alumina to just short of mullite 2SiO2) proportions is unequalled for jobs where strength at high temperatures, resistance to spalling, and resistance to slagging by acid slags is desired. High-grade porcelain ware also requires these minerals.""At the same cost, sillimanite would be preferred for most uses, but the lack of any large source of sillimanite has given economic preference to kyanite or andalusite for special refractories and high-grade porcelain ware.""3/The possible economic value of the sillimanite schist in the piedmont Plateau was first recognized by Dr. L. L. Smith, of the University of South Carolina, who published an article in the Engineering and Mining Journal, August 1943, on an occurrence of sillimanite schist in South Carolina.The Bureau of Mines was interested in developing a large source of sillimanite to relieve the shortage of high-grade refractories, and initiated a project to locate the ore-bearing areas in Georgia and South Carolina and to develop the most favorable ones.Two hundred and seventy-eight outcrops of sillimanite-bearing schists were found by a Bureau of Mines engineer.4/ The schist occurs irregularly throughout a belt extending from Talbot County, Georgia; to Spartanburg County, South Carolina, about 220•miIes long and approximately 15 miles in maximum width. Two types of low-sulphidation epithermal mineralisation may be recognised in volcanic terranes. Chalcedonic Silica- Adularia-Illite type mineralisation is most common in rhyolitic terranes, whereas Crystalline Quartz-Illite-(Adularia- Kaolinite) type mineralisation is more typically formed in andesitic terranes. A third type of epithermal mineralisation, the high sulphidation or Vuggy Silica-Alunite- Kaolinite-Illite type, is also common in andesitic terranes. Episodic violent boiling, accompanying hydraulic fracturing and hydrothermal eruptions, characteristic of geothermal systems in rhyolitic terranes, is stressed for the formation of Chalcedonic Silica mineralisation. Such boiling of deeply circulating meteoric groundwater, with some magmatic fluid contribution, provides chalcedonic veining, episodic banding and brecciation textures, adularia stability, bladed calcite, and extreme loss of H2S from the fluid to cause major gold deposition. Crystalline Quartz mineralisation is probably caused by the mixing of shallow acidic groundwater with ascending deep geothermal fluids beneath andesitic strato- volcanoes. The cooling effect, oxidation, and increased acidity, overcomes the dilution effect, and results in quartz deposition, illite (and locally kaolinite) alteration, and precipitation of metals. Extensive formation of base-metal sulphides further enhances gold deposition. Violent boiling is restricted to local structural dilation sites, potentially producing high grade "bonanza" gold mineralisation.

Development of the Batu Hijau Project was successfully completed in the fourth quarter of 1999 with the final handover and start-up of ore processing facilities. The development project had started more than three years earlier, in August 1996, when the Owner, PT. Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT), awarded an EPC contract to Fluor Daniel (FD) for design and construction of the project including: copper concentrator, port, power plant, town site, and infrastructure. PTNNT managed the development of the mine and procurement of mine equipment with its own forces. Bringing the Batu Hijau copper deposit into production was the largest mining project ever undertaken. Development of Batu Hijau was a complex project involving the work of tens of thousands of people in all parts of the world to complete engineering, manufacture and deliver equipment, supply materials, and build the plant. The ore deposit is located on the tropical island of Sumbawa in a remote and undeveloped section of Indonesia. The location and environment presented challenges for all phases and aspects of the project. To meet the challenges, the project team combined good planning and teamwork to best utilize the resources available. This approach assured continuity of personnel through construction to operations and minimized cost, resulting in completion of the project ahead of schedule and under budget.

The mineralogy of the Avalon Nechalacho deposit is complex with significant fractions of HREEs, Zr, and Nb found in refractory minerals such as zircon and fergusonite. Sulphuric acid baking followed by water leaching can be used to extract REEs from flotation concentrates, but acid baking does not completely "crack" the zircon and fergusonite, so the extractions of Zr, Nb, and HREEs are not high. An alternative flowsheet has been developed that is able to obtain significantly improved extractions of HREEs, Zr, and Nb from flotation concentrates or acid bake residues. This is accomplished by cracking the zircon and fergusonite minerals with caustic soda at high temperatures, followed by water washing to recover excess caustic soda and soluble sodium silicates and phosphates. REEs, Zr, and Nb in the solid residue can then be solubilized with HCl or H2SO4. This paper highlights some of the findings from an extensive laboratory program and discusses several flowsheet implications.

Rroundtable 2009, a Knight Piésold and Co.-hosted roundtable discussion on mine closure and cover design was held at the Red Lion Inn and Casino in Elko, NV on Feb. 12, 2009. Knight Piésold?s Bryan Ulrich and Steve Boyce, as well as Knight Piésold representatives Cynthia Parnow and Corey Conrad from Denver, CO, and Rick Frechette from the Tucson, AZ office were on hand to help facilitate the discussion. The meeting played host to approximately three-dozen attendees from four states. Attendees included personnel from seven mining properties and attendees from corporate offices. The majority of attendees were people directly involved with environmental work on a day-to-day basis. Other attendees were project managers whose jobs involve some level of environmental focus. The purpose of Roundtable 2009 was to exchange ideas and information pertaining to mine closure and cover design associated with almost any aspect of a mining operation. This type of forum provides a less inhibited format for discussion, when compared with traditional conferences and symposia. In the roundtable format, lively discussions are encouraged. This discussion was the fourth in the series of Elko Roundtable events. Previous roundtables pertained to heap leach pad design, construction and operation; design, construction and operation of tailings storage facilities and site-wide water considerations. The lignite deposits of the United States represent a huge potential source of fuel for power generation. It has been estimated that lignite constitutes about 24 percent of the remaining National reserves of solid fuel on a tonnage basis and about 15 percent of the reserves on a B.t.u. basis. (See sec. 3, part 1.) The major portion of these reserves is in North Dakota. Lignite has been used locally for domestic heating since the first settlers burned it at forts and fur-trading posts as early as 1855. Some of the first studies of the use of lignite in steam boilers were conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines from 1910 to 1920 (15, 19) 1/ However, the commercial utilization of lignite as fuel for producing power developed slowly. Not until about 1925 was any really successful lignite industrial fuel-blaming equipment developed. Since then the commercial use of lignite as a fuel for producing power has been increasing steadily.

There are hundreds of passive treatment systems accepting mining influenced water (MIW) throughout the world. Some systems do not perform to design expectations while others, including volunteer systems, have successfully operated relatively unattended for decades. The primary reasons for this situation include the common misconceptions that (1) a “cookbook” approach to design is valid for a wide array of MIW chemistries and site conditions, and (2) low maintenance means “no maintenance.” Passive treatment systems for MIW are typically manmade ecosystems that are designed to handle a specific range of metal loading conditions and MIW geochemistry. Thus, when design conditions are exceeded, the suite of microbial to macroscopic ecosystems may be slow to recover or mature. This should be no surprise to designers. But when a particular system fails, it may be inappropriately attributed to the technology, not the design. This paper presents a standard “phased” design protocol that appears to work and provides examples of sub-par performance of selected passive treatment systems.

The shear strength properties of generic cement foam material and cement foam/concrete interfaces were examined at three testing scales. In laboratory direct shear tests on specimens with average shearing area of 0.006 m2 (10 in.2), the cement foam material had average peak and residual shear strengths of 0.88 MPa (128 psi) and 0.39 MPa (56 psi), respectively. Depending on the concrete strength, the cement foam/concrete interfaces had peak and residual shear strengths ranging from 0.71 to 0.81 MPa (103 to 117 psi) and from 0.27 to 0.29 MPa (39 to 42 psi), respectively. In laboratory direct double shear tests on specimens with average shearing area of 0.084 m2 (130 in.2), the cement foam/concrete interfaces had average peak and residual shear strengths of 0.17 to 0.30 MPa (25 to 44 psi) and of 0.11 to 0.23 MPa (16 to 33 psi), respectively. In large shear tests of simulated cement foam seals with the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) test frame, cement foam/concrete interfaces with shearing area of 1.486 m2 (2,304 in.2) had average shear strengths of about 0.08 and 0.16 MPa (11 and 23 psi) along the roof and floor interfaces, respectively. The average shear strength through the cement foam material was 0.38 MPa (55.3 psi). Finite element analysis of the large seal tests and the back analysis of the shear strength of full-scale cement foam seals conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory confirmed shear strength of about 0.14 MPa (20 psi) along the seal/rock interfaces. The study concluded that the structural analysis of cement foam seals should be based on their residual shear strength determined from small laboratoryscale tests of the cement foam/concrete or rock interface and not be based on their peak strength.

The recent 20 years witnessed a boom and bust in the nickel laterite industry. Most notoriously is the story of the first three Western Australian nickel laterite projects which all suffered major ramp-up issues. Many hard lessons were learned by the industry and it has been widely reported that the major contributing factors included insufficient testing as well as a limited understanding of the materials handling characteristics at the front-end stage of the flowsheet. This paper compares the current "race to production" in the REE industry to the laterite industry 20 years ago and addresses the fundamental question: ‘Have mining and exploration companies with rare earth projects learned from past lessons and are they doing sufficient and appropriate testwork to prevent failure’? The authors will provide the perspective of a commercial metallurgical laboratory that has gone through the laterite cycle and is active in the present REE cycle.

Roxgold was a small exploration company when it discovered the Zone 55 orebody at the Yaramoko project in Burkina Faso in 2010. Since this time, it has actively progressed the project with the completion of a preliminary economic assessment in 2013, a feasibility study in early 2014 and obtained full permitting for construction in January 2015. With no other underground gold mine in Burkina Faso, developing a modern and productive modern gold mine in West Africa was considered a significant challenge as Roxgold moved from explorer to producer.To facilitate this development, Roxgold engaged an international underground mining contractor to partner this development. This has enabled Roxgold to successfully develop the mine over a relatively short time frame with construction commencing in April 2015, first gold being poured in May 2016 and commercial production being achieved in October 2016.This paper discusses key elements of the project development and highlights some of the challenges faced with operating in a remote poorly developed area with a limited mining culture. Furthermore, the authors highlight the key technical and operational aspects that make the Yaramoko project a very successful development project.CITATION:Cope, B and Churi, Y, 2017. A unique, regional grid of deep (12 - 14 second record length), seismic reflection and refraction data has been recorded by the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) across the offshore Gippsland Basin and parts of the adjacent Bass Basin, in southeastern Australia. These data have been combined with onshore mapping to produce a new model for the development of the Gippsland and adjacent Bass Strait basins. Overall, the Gippsland Basin contains up to 12 - 14 km of sediment in an ESE-trending depocentre bounded on its north and northwestern margins by a detachment ramp, and on its southern side by a relatively linear, listric fault system. The basin, together with the adjacent Bass and Otway Basins, appears to have formed as part of a linked, largely- strike-slip to 'transtensional' system, which started to extend through Bass Strait, probably during the latest Jurassic. Each of the basins developed by movement on a common detachment or detachment complex, which produced headwall extension at their western ends, in the areas now occupied by the Strzelecki Ranges, Otway Ranges - Torquay Sub-basin, and Robe Trough. Adjustments and reactivation from the mid Cretaceous of several postulated microplates in the region, largely in response to Tasman Basin rifting, gave rise to the wrench-related and compressional structures which form the major petroleum targets in the Gippsland Basin. However, the same process formed largely extensional stuctures in the Bass Basin. Our interpretation of the tectonic history of the Gippsland Basin leads us to the conclusion that there may have been several phases of petroleum generation and migration, and that potential petroleum traps appear to exist in the deeper section, in structures sometimes not reflected at the top or near-top Latrobe Group levels.
