This paper summarizes the results of an investigation into possibly the largest coal pillar failure in the USA. The newly opened drift mine is located in Southeastern Kentucky and worked an 11 feet thick coal seam, all other mines in the District worked seams 4-5 feet thick. The initial mine development consisted of 14 main entries (Fig. 1) which were driven in two sets of 7, under increasing depth of overburden. As the left seven entries came under deeper overburden the pillar ribs began sloughing which caused many of the concrete-block ventilation stoppings to crack. The mine management stopped the advance in the left seven and continued with the right seven entries. During the spring of the following year development resumed in the left seven, rib sloughage occurred again and this time severely cracked many stoppings and many were totally disintegrated from the excessive deformation. Within few weeks the sloughage was so heavy that many of these entries behind the active face were filled with piles of sloughed coal slabs. When the face reached a depth approximately 1150 feet, the sloughage became a slow, massive squeeze. The entry convergence (closure) reduced their height from 11 to 7-8 feet and the squeeze spread back to shallower depth covering an area roughly 300 pillars.

In the past, Newmont Gold Company relied on cement for their ore agglomeration process. With assistance from Betz Industrial, Newmont began Investigating the use of polymers for ore agglomeration. If gold recovery would not be jeopardized, then polymers could replace cement and possibly reduce operational costs associated with cement agglomeration. The following outlines the preliminary testing conducted to determine the feasibility of polymer agglomeration with Newmont's ore and the results of the test heap, which was constructed so the program could be examined under actual operating conditions. Similar polymer agglomeration testing has been successfully performed in other Nevada gold operations. By eliminating the need for cement, a polymeric agglomeration program could improve material handling operations, as well as offer the following additional savings. First, the polymer application uses only lime for adjusting basicity, the polymer does not contribute any alkalinity to the heap. Because lime is more soluble than cement, detoxification of the heap becomes much faster and less costly for the mine relative to rinsing cement alkalinity. The following graph compares the detoxification rate of cement and polymer over a 33 day cycle.

Researchers at the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, developed and tested equipment to measure corrosion rates on a commercial-scale mill. Bench-scale experiments were also designed for duplicating ore grinding conditions closely enough that realistic rate determinations can be made in laboratory tests. Rates measured in a laboratory system compared favorably with those measured in the field. Cast steel was found to have corrosion rates in a copper mill and laboratory test cell of 22 and 21 mpy, respectively. Corrosion was found to account for less than 5 pct of the total grinding media wear in the operations studied.

This paper summarizes recent developments in computer modelling and estimation technology. Significant improvements in computational and modelling efficiencies have advanced technical computing to the stage where, for the first time, it can be realistically applied to short-term mine planning and production control. Real-time interactive grade estimation of complex shapes, volumes and grade distributions, based on immediate turn-around of production sample grades, is now possible. An added benefit is the ability to produce complete geostatistical estimates which include confidence limits. These can be incorporated into the decision making and risk assessment processes of production control. Why the need for new technology? What is wrong with the conventional methods which have sufficed for the last thirty years? The response is manyfold. They suffer from inefficient computational processes and conflicts with geostatistical theory. They are responsible for constricting the flow of information between the disciplines involved in the mine production process. Finally, it is illogical to approximate irregular geological and mining volumes with orthogonal sets of rectangular blocks. Geological materials do not occur in block formation; and mining methods which excavate rectangular blocks have yet to be developed. Other computer based technologies have evolved out of the dark ages of rectangular approximations and have successfully dealt with irregular three-dimensional geometries. It is time for computing in the mining industry to follow this example and take full advantage of available technology. To provide the necessary background, consider the basic requirements for successful implementation of technical computing within the mine production process.

Laboratory settling and filtration testing was conducted on wet processed fly ash in order to determine the applicability of conventional dewatering techniques to reduce the moisture content prior to drying. Settling tests showed that acceptable clarity (<1.5 g/l suspended solids) could be achieved after as little as 6 minutes of settling. After settling to a consistency of 40 weight % solids, continuous laboratory vacuum filtration testing produced a cake containing below 20% moisture with throughput exceeding 150 lb/ft2/hr.

The adsorption of ethoxylated sulfonates and nonionics of the same ethoxylation number?on a low-ash coal has been studied. The surfactant adsorption has been investigated as a function of concentration, pH, temperature and ionic strength for three homologues. Zeta potential of coal particles and surface tension of supernatants has been concurrently determined to eludicate the orientation of sudactant molecules on the coal surface as well as the mechanism of adsorption process. The adsorption data are utilized to calculate thermodynamic parameters such as the free energy of adsorption and isoteric heats of adsorption.

Qualitative and interpretative information as obtained from geological and/or geophysical studies, in addition to precise measurement, is incorporated into the estimation process through an indicator variable. The indicator conditioned estimator is formulated as a cokriging and its expression is data value dependent as opposed to that of the traditional kriging estimators. The solution of the dual cokriging system pro-vides simultaneously an estimate of the unknown and an estimate of the conditional probability that the unknown belongs to a specific population or class. Being an unbiased and minimum-error-variance estimator by construction, the indicator conditioned estimator is better in the least square sense than the ordinary kriging estimator because it uses additional information carried by the indicator data.

In late November 2010, a Laotian landmark was achieved for the country?s first tunnel boring machine - (TBM) driven tunnel. Italian contractor CMC di Ravenna celebrated the breakthrough of a 7.6-m- (25.1-ft-) diameter Robbins single shield TBM for a hydroelectric tunnel on the Nam Theun River. The Theun Hinboun expansion project and 5.5 km (3.4 miles) headrace tunnel will bring much needed power in-creases to Laos and Thailand. . ?Since this is the country?s first machine, it has awakened people?s curiosity and interest. We had experienced Italian and Chinese crew members, but we also trained many Lao workers during the course of the project, as this was something they had not seen before,? said Luca Barbàra, Far East Manager for CMC di Ravenna. The machine broke through on Nov. 21 into an exit shaft close to the intake structure on the river. The machine is now being disassembled and removed - CMC hopes to use it on upcoming projects in the region. Due to the current rainy season and relative low level of the tunnel, the last 100 m (330 ft) up to the intake structure will be completed using drill-and-blast after the waters recede below the tunnel invert.

The provinces of Guangxi, Guizhou, Hubei (and most recently Fujian) were the prime exporters of barite during this period. Guangdong and Shandong were exporters too but not major participants. These are all primarily agricultural areas so there existed a sufficient labor force willing to work in the mines to supplement their income from farming. During the early years, barite export pushed the existing transportation systems in these provinces to operational capacity. The mines from which this barite is extracted are located about 250 to 1,400 kilometers from the sea ports. Transportation of the ore from the mines to the ports follows a net-work that includes trucking to various rail-heads where it is then shipped via freight trains to ports for loading into seagoing vessels. in some instances, the barite travels by truck or train to the Yangtze River where it is then barged to an ocean port.

Introduction Coal is the US&apos;s largest indigenous fossil fuel resource and is used to power 57% of this country&apos;s electrical generation (NCA, 1986). Congress, however, is focusing its attention on the acid rain issue and public sentiment is leaning toward further curtailments of SO2, NO, and particulates from utility and industrial coal-burning facilities. The Cool Water plant has proven that integrated-gasification-combined-cycle (IGCC) technology can reliably produce economical electrical power while limiting SO2, NOx, and particulates to a rate of only one-tenth of the federal New Source Performance Standards for coal-fired plants. Process water requirements at Cool Water are 40% less than those of a conventional coal-fired utility plant equipped with flue-gas desulfurization units for stack gas scrubbing, thus reducing waste water treatment requirements (Clark and Shorter, 1985). The IGCC technology employed at Cool Water has now been demonstrated to efficiently convert coal to electricity in an environmentally superior fashion. The Cool Water Coal Gasification Program is an unincorporated California association of six partners whose commitment is proving that the integration of gasification with combined cycle power production (IGCC) is commercially viable and environmentally safe. The 120 MW Cool Water plant began commercial production on June 24, 1984. The Program is operating it for a five-year commercial demonstration period. Pilot scale flotation tests were conducted with a 1-ft-diam column at the Barrick Resources (USA) Mercur mine, Tooele County, UT, to scavenge unleached (0.01 to 0.018 oz/st) gold values from the tailings of a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit. The optimal recovery was 35 pct of the unamenable-to-leaching gold, at a grade of 0.353 ounces of gold per short ton, using a mixture of dithiophosphate, xanthate, and diesel fuel as a collector. This was achieved by floating approximately 1.6 wt pct of the CIL tailings. The gold values are believed to be contained in arsenic-bearing minerals, attrited carbon, and carbonaceous material in the ore. Redox potentials were measured with a gold electrode during the conditioning stage prior to flotation. The correlation between flotation recovery and redox potential values could be used to control reagent additions. Treatment of a previously leached and weathered tailings material, averaging about 0.055 ounces of gold per short ton, was also investigated using the column. The tailings were first water leached at approximately 600 C, and the water-leached tailings, which contained approximately 0.03 ounces of gold per short ton, were then fed to the column flotation unit. The effects of pH and sodium sulfide addition on gold flotation recovery and redox potentials were examined. maximum gold recovery, 36 pct, was achieved at pH 8.5 with a sodium sulfide addition of 0.18 lb/st.

In the Fall of 1987 The Wellmore Coal division of The United Company installed a fines separation circuit in its #20 plant near Big Rock, Va. The addition of the fines circuit included a bank of classifying cyclones and two flotation units; one a conventional 4 cell, 34 m3 Wemco cell, the other an 2.4 meter diameter by 7.6 meter tall, 28.3 m3 column flotation cell. The new fine coal separation circuit is depicted in Figure 1. The column flotation cell is manufactured by the Deister Concentrator Company, Inc., under the trade name Flotaire. The Deister Flotaire column cell utilizes a counter current flow arrangement and a different means of generating air bubbles than that of conventional mechanical flotation cells found in coal processing plants. Other features include diffusers for additional air supply and a froth washer. This cell is one of the few commercial scale column cells processing coal.

"INTRODUCTION Contrary to popular belief, Arizona State Trust land is not public land. All uses of the land must benefit the Trust, a fact that is considered with the review of each application received for sale, lease, or permit. This includes applications for activities ranging from commercial development to recreation. In 1863, the Territory of Arizona was established by an act of Congress. This act reserved sections 16 and 36 in each township to be held in trust for the benefit of the common schools. Later, the Enabling Act of 1910 allowed the Territory of Arizona to prepare for statehood. This act reserved the additional sections 2 and 32 of each township for the common schools and granted another 2,350,000 acres to be held in trust for other beneficiaries. In all, Congress granted the State of Arizona almost 11 million acres. The State was to manage those lands and maximize revenue for 13 separate beneficiaries. To meet this mandate, the State established the Arizona State Land Department (ASLD) in 1915. During fiscal year 2015, the ASLD contributed $136 million to the permanent fund, bringing the total value to over $5.1 billion, through the sale and leasing of the land and natural products which includes minerals. The current inventory of State Trust lands includes 9.2 million acres representing about 12.7% of the State.The ASLD Minerals Section manages the exploration, development, and leasing of mineral products on State Trust land. We are not a regulatory agency, but a department guided by our fiduciary responsibilities to the Trust. Our mineral programs include: Exploration Permits, Mineral Leases, Mineral Material Leases, Geothermal Leases, Oil & Gas Leases, and Special Land Use Permits. INDUSTRIAL MINERALS ON ARIZONA STATE TRUST LAND Industrial minerals fall under the category of either Mineral or Mineral Materials Leases. History Leaching of sulfide ore was first attempted by the Phelps Dodge Corporation about 1900 at Bisbee, Arizona, when Dr. James Douglas conducted experiments in an attempt to apply the leaching techniques then in use at Rio Tinto, Spain. Although this initital attempt was unsuccessful, research work was continued which culminated in successful leaching operations at Tyrone, New Mexico, in 1917 and at Bisbee beginning in 1920. Leaching has continued intermittently since that date, with material from the Lavender Pit being leached today. The Lavender Pit Leach Dump Stripping for the Lavender Pit was started in 1951, with mining operations on stream in 1954 and continuing to the present. All material removed from the pit has been classified as waste, leach material, milling ore, or direct smelting ore, depending upon grade and degree of oxidation. Lavender Pit leach material has been stockpiled in a single dump, called No. 7 Dump. This dump covers an area of approximately 135 acres and average about 300 feet in height. The dump has been deposited over a period of 20 years by truck haulage and contains several layers, each of which has a permeable boulder layer at the bottom and a compacted layer at the top. Leaching of Lavender Pit material was started in 1956 and has proceeded simultaneously with dump construction. Former leach pond areas and haulage surfaces have been ripped with D-9 tractors before deposition of succeeding layers of ore.

Aragonite "sand," an oolitic lime-stone, is distributed throughout the Bahamas on the Grand Bahama Bank, adjacent to Southeast Florida. Bahamian deposits hold 75-100 billion tons of recoverable Aragonite. Aragonite&apos;s precipitation from seawater over 700 years ago assures low contaminates, making it a pure material for such industries as cement, glass, etc. A 90-acre, man-made production island was built south of Bimini, adjacent to ocean shipping channels mining is by cutterhead, suction dredge, dewatering, and stockpiling for further drainage and shipping. Aragonite is transferred to the U. S. East and Gulf Coasts via bulk carriers to points of sale.

Block cutter machines have been extensively used in natural stone industry, which is a sub-section of mining industry. In this study, the costs occurring in plate losses cut from Bilecik beige marble with a circular saw block cutter machine have been predicted using Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques. One of SPC techniques is Shewhart control charts such as mean control chart. These charts have been efficiently at determining the plate losses. The costs occurring in plate losses have been calculated by using the result of Shewhart control chart. Finally, this study presents the necessity and usefulness of SPC techniques in assessment of natural stone industry.

Flocculation, the process of coagulation or coalescence of finely divided particles, is commonly used in separating fine solids from fluids. Forces disposing of the particles to flocculate include: ionic forces of attraction, secondary entropic forces, and magnetism. Magnetic flocculation is due to a physical magnetizing process which affects suspended ferromagnetic particles. Such particles, after exposure to magnetic fields strong enough to cause reorientation of the particles and alignment of the induced magnetic poles, tend strongly to retain this induced magnetism, as the magnetic retentivity of ferromagnetic particles is a linear function of its specific surface.1 Thus, because they become small magnets with high residual magnetism, the particles become and remain attracted to one another, forming large agglomerates. Fine magnetic particles close to domain size can exhibit energies of the magnetization of the order of 105 ergs/cm3,2 which is many times greater than the energy affected by chemical flocculents. Therefore magnetic flocculation can be used to agglomerate particles having surfaces ionized with like charges and only a minute quantity of ferromagnetic material will be necessary to develop sufficient force to overcome the repulsive ionic forces and hold together relatively large masses of fine solid agglomerates suspended in fluids. Since flocculation occurs after the fine suspension passes through a magnetic field generated by magnets surrounding a pipe section, the simplicity of the process and economic advantage makes magnetic flocculation very attractive.

Through the early 1980&apos;s, surveying at Bingham Canyon required a great deal of repetitive and manual work. The advent of total station surveying equipment provided an opportunity to improve the speed and accuracy of surveying work while reducing manpower needs. An evaluation of total station systems and their ability to meet the surveying requirements of Bingham Canyon culminated in the purchase of a total station system as the mine re-opened in 1986. This paper presents the procedure for evaluating, implementing and using the total station survey system at Bingham Canyon.

Public Law 75-87, the Surface :mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA), Section 516(b) requires the underground coal mining operator to "adopt measures consistent with known technology in order to prevent subsidence causing material carnage to the extent technologically and economically feasible, maximize mine stability, and maintain the value and reasonably foreseeable use of such surface lands, except inn those instances where the mining technology used requires planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner . . .?. The Congress also directed the Secretary of the Interior to promulgate regulations to implement the law. As a result, the control of subsidence from underground coal mining to minimize surface damage has become the mandate of a Federal law. This paper discusses the mechanics of subsidence and the effects of subsidence on ground features and also summarizes some of the measures which have been used to minimize the possibility of damage to surface structures as a result of subsidence due to underground coal mining.
