In Australia, Safe Work legislation requires mines to have a documented ‘Safety Case’ explaining how a mine will safely manage all major hazards. A similar requirement is legislated or inferred by regulation in all jurisdictions. For small scale, instabilities leading to day-to-day seismic hazards, a ‘Stability Safety Case’ built around observational methods and measurement triggered responses can be effective because adverse situations are easily identified and the costs of lower control measures are not onerous. Also, if the influence of a volume of yield on the mine load system is small, the response of the system will be more predictable. However, for episodes of large scale mine instability, the hazard derives from the widespread, multi component influence of the event on the mine load system. As the system response depends on interactions between many parts, the resolution of predictions will be lower and situations can arise without local precedent. Further, as episodes of large scale instability change the stiffness and nature of the connectedness between parts of the mine load system, the behavior of the system before the event will be a poor empirical basis for forecasts of event related hazards. Most importantly, Triggered Action Response Plans (TARPs) and ‘traffic light’ warning systems cannot make design choices or identify new hazard phenomena. They are ‘lower’ control measures targeting explicit human-made instability hypotheses. As such, the Safety Cases related to management of hazard from potential large scale seismic events and mine instability cannot rely solely on TARPs. Mines that successfully manage meaningful dynamic instability always acknowledge the ultimate reliance on expert human intuition, knowledge and imagination to appreciate the range of possible hazard scenarios, to make stability hypotheses and propose solutions. Complex analysis, TARPs and measurements are critical steps in the human decision cycle, but only support the making and testing of ‘Stability Hypotheses’ made by expert engineers. Relying on expert skill and judgement as essential components of a Safety Case, however essential, introduces human vulnerabilities. Another challenge is that the expert decision making process is hard to document. Beck et al 2019 first described an organizational and procedural framework for maintenance of an ongoing large-scale ‘Stability Safety Case' where a degree of expert judgement and imagination is needed to manage a seismically active mine. The structured data appreciation process outlined sufficient measurements, analysis and appreciation to confirm the stability state of the mine and was applicable to all underground mines. After several years of implementation in various forms in stoping, caving and room and pillar mines, this update addresses lessons learned and describes some considerations for numerical forecasting to establish a base case, and some challenges for empirical hazard identification.

In the past few years the world petroleum industry has increasingly felt the weight of changes in the principal economic factors affecting pro¬fits. As a result of, these changes, it has been necessary for many oil companies to acquire certain new facilities in order to strengthen their competitive positions and thereby protect their tremendous investments in crude oil reserves, pipe line facilities, refining operations, and marketing outlets. Principally these needs have been met by new capital outlays. A supplementary, method of acquiring needed facilities, however, has been to obtain existing facilities through complete or partial acquisition of other companies.' properties. It is this method of meeting competitive pressures with which this paper is concerned. This paper presents a statistical breakdown of the mergers and acquisitions which occurred in the oil industry between January 1, 1954, and October 1, 1959, showing the frequency' with which certain types of properties were acquired in each of the years studied. In addition, it discusses the principal economic conditions which stimulated many of these property trans¬fers, comments on the effects of these mergers on the consuming public, and indicates the types of, mergers and the rate at which they may be expected during the next three or four years. The basic data upon which the statistical analysis presented in this paper is based were taken from several published sources. Obviously they are somewhat incomplete because not all mergers and acquisitions were reported However;, a careful search was conducted through, The Wall Street, Journal, The Oil and Gas Journal, Potroleum Week, and The Oil Daily with the result that the data should be reasonably complete and comparable for each of the years studied, It is believed, therefore, that the statistical analysis which' follows provides a reasonably accurate indication of the general trend in mergers and acquisitions during the period studied.

The demand and supply of wollastonite has gone through a dynamic period in the 1990's. A 10% -15% growth rate of demand stimulated interest in evaluating new projects. However, the mid-1990's brought declining prices for commodity applications and natural barriers to entry for technical applications, making many of these potential projects uneconomic. Successful projects that were brought to market were done so by incumbent producers. This work examines the competitive structure of the wollastonite market by evaluating the strategic decisions of the industry leader, NYCO Minerals Inc., and a new market entrant, Orleans Resources, in an attempt to identify the environmental threats and opportunities of this industry. Results suggest new entrants like Orleans Resources face significant entry barriers for technical applications, while NYCO Minerals could improve its profitability by having less exposure to commodity applications.

Bio-treatment of uranium contaminated soils from Fernald using the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was investigated. The experimental results showed that extraction of uranium upto 99 percent from soils were obtained with 10 percent pulp density suspension and with addition of iron (3000 mg/l) after bio-remediation time of seven days. Application of the results to industrial practices is discussed.

A novel impedance probe was commissioned specifically for capturing fast dynamic information about filtration processes. It provides an attractive alternative to more complex measurement techniques in situations where the slurry system is primarily one-dimensional. The probe can monitor mudline, slurry densification and drainage. Dynamic variations in cake permeability are obtained by combining dynamic mudline information obtained with the probe and filtrate rate data derived from a leaf test apparatus. The measurements are reviewed in relation to micro structural measurements obtained on iron ore filter cakes. The practical significance of these measurements for optimization of the filtration process is discussed.

In the November 1957 issue of "Chemical Process Engineering," a British publications, there appeared an article entitled "Correct Selection of Drying Equipment." The author wrote as follows "Whether batch drying or continuous drying' methods are applied, the basis of efficient drying is heat distribution, control of rate of heat input, and heat transference from heating medium to the particles of the material to be dried." The author continues: "Because the efficiency of direct dryers, such as hot air or hot gas dryers, increases with rising inlet temperature of the drying air or gas when exhaust temperature remains fixed, the highest practical drying temperature should be used. Exhaust air should leave the dryer at the lowest possible temperature, but as fully saturated with moisture as possible." It is certainly conceivable that the author of this article by outlining the basic requirements for efficient drying methods has unwittingly given the reasons why fluidized drying is rapidly being adopted for so many industrail applications, including the dryingof fine coal. An examination in greater detail of the individual basic requirements for efficient drying as outlined by the author is perhaps the most logical starting point.

6, 7.3 meter diameter autogenous mills at Wabush Mines are undergoing conversion from a radial configuration of pulp discharger to a curved design. Improved discharging efficiency has effectively lowered the pulp level in the mill. The low level operation enhances the grinding efficiency netting a 12% power reduction. Significant reductions to rate of wear has been a spin off benefit. The design incorporates features for holding the assembly solidly in place thus eliminating bolt hole damage and leakers. Preliminary work in one 11 meter mill at Hibbing Taconite did not indicate that all the same advantages were available in their process.

A new sanitary sewer was installed in Pleasant Hill, California using microtunnelling methods. The project consisted of 693 meters of 1372 mm and 1981 mm concrete pipe. A Herrenknecht AVN 1200 was used to install the nominal 1372 mm pipe in three drives. The machine was then fitted with an oversized shield used to install the large diameter pipeline. This articulated shield allowed the excavation of a 2362 mm diameter hole with a 1524 mm machine-- a technique new to North America. This paper reviews the design considerations for the articulated shield and reports on the project challenges and solutions to overcome these challenges.

Carbonaceous material (CM) from the Barrick Goldstrike Mines, NV, was characterized with respect to its gold sorption (preg-robbing) and gold recovery behavior. The breadth of graphite peaks measured by X-ray diffraction were used to calculate crystallite dimensions (002) of the CM. The (002) dimension was found to vary inversely with preg-robbing activity and directly with gold-recovery behavior, indicating that the degree of graphitization (maturation) experienced by the carbonaceous material is correlated with gold-loss during ore processing. The inverse correlation of preg-robbing activity was improved when percent preg-robbing was regressed against (002) crystallite size and carbon content. The (101) crystallite dimensions of all samples were calculated from laser Raman analysis, and were not found to correlate with preg-robbing behavior of the CM. BET surface area and micropore size distribution results were affected by grinding history, negating comparison of these characteristics between samples.

Laboratory and pilot plant investigations have indicated that copper recoveries of 50% can be achieved with fine grinding and flotation of a copper reverberatory furnace slag, Microscopic and microprobe studies indicate that the recoverable copper is in the form of matte, chalcocite, and metallic copper; the percentage of copper in particles appearing to be copper-free was from 0.23 - 0.54%.

While this conference is dedicated to the examination of "Challenges in Mineral Processing," the broader aspect of the pursuit of this subject is Research and Development in the Mining Industry. When I was asked to speak at this symposium, I hesitated to accept. While my early schooling, training and professional occupation were in the field of this symposium, it was so long ago that I no longer feel competent to contribute anything of interest to you except perhaps for a limited historical perspective, which most of you probably already know. However, it might be worthwhile to explore the more general aspect of research and development from the viewpoint of management, as this is the stance from which I dealt with the subject for the last 30 years or so. While most managements generally have a positive view of research and development, few of the leaders in the mineral industry have actually had the personal experience of doing research for a long enough time to have obtained a full understanding and the feel for its place in the long-term technological innovation that our industry must foster. I graduated from the University of California in Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science degree and a major in metallurgy. It was during the great depression of the thirties, and it was difficult to obtain a practical job in the industry. I got a scholarship at the Montana School of Mines and received a Master of Science degree in ore dressing under Professor A. M. Gaudin, followed by another year with him pursuing research. Anyone who studied under him, or knew him well, would assert that this was a unique experience. Gaudin had a brilliant mind and a profound respect for science and the scientific method. The iron-ore underground Kiirunavaara mine (Sweden) has been seismically active since 2008. In 2021 the production is on levels 1079 and 1108 m, at the deepest. The seismic activity has changed in character over time with one step change in 2015 when the number of large (ML>2) seismic events increased, and another one when the mine experienced a seismic event with Mw 4.2 in 2020. In 2017, the mine evaluated Hydraulic Fracturing (HF) as a possible mitigation technique for larger seismic events and a one-hole trial was performed. The trial proved promising, and it was decided to go forward with a large-scale trial covering an entire production area in the mine. The large-scale trial consists of 25 fracturing holes, 50 – 100 m long, running along 500 m out of the ~4500 m long orebody and spanning between production levels 1108 m and 1252 m. The fracturing process continued for a year, resulting in ~38,000 seismic events with −3.3<ML<1.4. The breakdown pressure varied between fractures in the same hole as well as between holes in the same area. Average breakdown pressure per hole was between 12 MPa and 50 MPa. The seismic response to HF in 2021 varied greatly from hole to hole and between fractures in the same hole. The variation in response could be related to the geological conditions and the infrastructure, such as large caving ore passes. In this paper some details about the experiments and broad preliminary analysis of the effect of the HF by using seismic source parameters of the induced seismic events are presented: 1) Distribution of seismic activity, 2) the ‘equivalent’ magnitudes for each hole calculated from the cumulative seismic energy and seismic potency released during the fracturing, compared with the local geological conditions; 3) the predominant failure mechanism of the seismic events caused by HF was defined. A difference in the behaviour between larger and smaller events was noticed, as ML>0 events seem to be compression type failures and ML<0 events seem to be related to slip on pre-existing structures. No seismic events related to creation of a new fracture have been identified yet.

One of the most difficult tasks associated with placer mining is the sampling of the deposit. More placer projects have failed due to inaccurate assessment of the reserves than to any other reason. Within the realm of placers, those containing valuable minerals with a high unit value are more difficult to sample than those with larger bulk, lower unit value minerals. Some items to consider when sampling a placer deposit are as follows: A. A relatively large sample is needed for accurate valuation of the ground being tested. Placers are composed of many sizes of gravel which makes a representative sample difficult to obtain. B. When sampling placers for high unit value minerals such as gold, any error in mineral content of the sample will be magnified in the calculation of reserves. C. Values are usually erratically distributed within the gravel mass. Therefore, some placers with a more uniform value distribution may be adequately assessed with a minimum number of samples whereas a deposit with a highly erratic distribution of values may not be adequately sampled regardless of how many samples are taken. D. The investigation of a placer deposit should be made by, or be under the direction of, a person experienced in the art of placer sampling. F) During a sampling program, items that must be observed and noted in addition to the sample size and valuable mineral content should include boulder size and number, clay content, bedrock conditions, water, frozen ground, false bedrock, and any other physical characteristics that would affect mining of the deposit.

In 2016, a 3.7-ML magnitude event caused by mining activity occurred at a longwall mine in southwestern Virginia which was recorded by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and felt by local residents. The event was the largest of its kind since a global mine design change by the operator was instituted in 2008 following three large events in 2005, 2006 and 2007 (3.4, 4.3, and 3.4, respectively). Two of the three pre-2008 events (2005 and 2007) damaged ventilation controls in the mine which fueled a mine fire. In 2016 the mine’s management requested researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to access geological data and determine what parameters could possibly lead to events of a magnitude of 1.0 ML or greater. The dissociation (ionisation) constant of hydrogen cyanide, pKa(HCN), has been measured by high precision glass electrode potentiometric titrations in saline solutions containing up to 5 mol/L sodium chloride. The dissociation constant of water that is necessary for the calculation of pKa(HCN) has also been measured. In saline solution, and in contrast to literature values, pKa(HCN) changes considerably at both high and low ionic strengths as a result of changes in activity coefficients. In addition an equation is presented, using literature data, that describes the variation of pKa(HCN) with temperature up to 150°C. The significance of the changes in pKa(HCN) for optimising the pH of alkaline cyanide gold recovery streams is briefly discussed.

The Paso Diablo coal project is located in the Guasare Basin in the northwestern region of Venezuela near the border with Colombia. In 1987, Carbones del Guasare SA, a joint venture comprised of Carbozulia and A.A. Antilles Coal (an Arco and AgipCoal joint venture) was formed to develop the Paso Diablo coal reserves for world markets. Regional drilling has indicated a coal resource of more than 6 Gt (6.6 billion st). Further exploration has delineated the Paso Diablo deposit as an area particularly suited for cost-effective surface mining. The calculated economically minable reserves of this area (200 Mt or 220 million st) and the coal quality characteristics are based on extensive core drilling programs. Initial coal mining operations began in August of 1987 and the mine is presently producing at a rate of 1.5 Mt/a (1.65 million stpy). The coal is hauled about 85 km (53 miles) to a barge loading terminal at Santa Cruz de Mara using highway-type haul trucks. Continued demands for higher grade, competitive products from the Mesabi Range have made it necessary to increase the efficiency of the process in every possible way. A brief review of a typical heavy media flow scheme, as illustrated in. Figure l, might be in order for those not intimately associated with this process of iron ore beneficiation.

A detailed experimental study of the variations in grinding rate with particle size, particle load, ball diameter, ball load, mill diameter, and mill speed was carried out for a soft cement clinker and a hard cement clinker. The effects of the ball diameter, ball load and particle load were observed to be material (hardness) independent, and those of the particle size, mill diameter and mill speed to be material dependent. A sharp change in the grinding behavior was observed for both the clinkers at about 150 µm size. Below this critical size: (i) the hardness difference between the two clinkers became insignificant, (ii) variation in the grinding rate with particle size became markedly more pronounced, and (iii) mill speed had little or no effect on grinding rate. The importance of these results in the context of process optimization and control is discussed.

Maximizing production of oil from sandstone petroleum reservoirs is aided by use of non-damaging drilling and workover/completion fluids. Various tests, such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microsccpy, petrographic microscopy, porosity and permeability are conducted on core samples. Several fluids are selected, on the basis of these results, for return permeability tests. A report is then written giving the results of all tests, potential reservoir problems, and recommended practices for exploiting the reservoir.
