One of the primary interests of the United States Department of Energy's Mine Planning Division is to fully develop avenues of technical research which potentially offer positive effects on coal mine productivity. One such area of research involves the removal of methane gas from unmined portions of coalbeds through vertical wells drilled from surface locations. As coalbed methane content is reduced, less gas is available for flow into the mine, and consequently ventilation requirements are decreased and/or coal extraction rates increase. Another attractive aspect of the vertical borehole drainage method is that it presents an opportunity to recover and utilize significant quantities of methane gas, which would otherwise be wasted to the atmosphere. The viability of removing gas from the Mary Lee coalbed using stimulated vertical boreholes was first suggested by Elder and Deul as a result of a United States Bureau of Mines' drilling project conducted from 1971 to 1974 (4). Other United States Bureau of Mines' studies forecasted that degasification would eventually be necessary in the Mary Lee coalbed because most new or expanding mine development would take place at depths exceeding 1 000 feet (305 meters), where the methane problem would be severe (3) (13). In 1975 a large-scaled drilling program was designed in order to supply industry's anticipated need for a degasification technology in the Warrior coal basin, Alabama. The results of this government/industry sponsored effort were to be specifically applicable to the Mary Lee coalbed, the most extensive and economically important deep minable coal present in the area. Major technical objectives of this program are twofold: (1) to measure the effects of various well completion designs, particularly hydraulic stimulation, on mining and (2) to determine the effects of well spacing on gas drainage rates. A cooperative agreement was established with United States Steel Corporation in late 1975 and field work began shortly thereafter in the proximity of a newly developing mine near Oak Grove, Alabama. Government responsibility for this program was transferred from the United States Bureau of Mines to the United States Department of Energy in October 1977. To date, as a result of this program, twenty-one wells have been completed into the Mary Lee coalbed at the Oak Grove site. Seventeen of these wells were drilled on an experimental grid pattern located two miles from the active mine. These grid wells are primarily being used to generate data necessary to determine the effects of well spacing on gas drainage rates and will also provide a large amount of information regarding the long-term effects of degasification on mining. The four remaining wells (designated Ton through TW4) were placed near the mine so that the full effects of completion could be studied within the short time required for underground interception. Results gathered from the first two test wells (TW1 and TW2) have been reported in detail (10) and indicated that several improvements were necessary to increase gas drainage rates. Hydraulic stimulation was one of the most important aspects of well design that required improvement. Nitrogen-charged foam stimulation treatment was used at TW3 and TW4 instead of the gelled-fluid type stimulation used at the first two near-mine test wells.

Boyles Bros. Drilling Co. and Gibbons and Reed Company, both of Salt Lake City, Utah, have successfully combined into two joint ventures on the San Juan-Chama project of the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. The Azotea Tunnel is 12.7 miles in length; the inlet portal is on the Navajo River in Archileta County, Colorado, and the outlet portal is in New Mexico, about 10 miles south of the state border. The Oso Tunnel lies immediately to the north of the Azotea Tunnel and discharges water directly into it. We are presently driving both tunnels with mechanical boring machines from their portals at the Navajo River. Both tunnels are circular, fully concrete lined. The Azotea Tunnel has a finished diameter of 10 ft. 11 inches while the Oso Tunnel is 8 ft 7 inches in diameter. Both tunnels are supported with circular, structural steel rings as required by ground conditions. In good ground rock bolts and steel roof plates are used.

The Tower Mill has proven to be a grinding machine with a demonstrated application flexibility. Variations in applications have proven to be numerous. This mill was originally intended for fine grinding applications. Subsequent testwork and installations have demonstrated the mill can be utilized in place of ball mills as secondary mills. The following lists a few of the circuits tested: 1. Tower Mill secondary receiving feed from a primary SAG mill grinding stage. 2. Tower Mill as tertiary grind unit following a rod mill/ball mill. 3. Tower Mill as secondary grind unit following a primary ball mill. 4. Tower Mill as a limeslaker. 5. Tower Mill grinding as a primary unit taking limestone crusher discharge. Applications demonstrate the mill is energy efficient and is sensitive to the following consideration: 1. Circuit chosen. 2. Top size of feed. 3. Product size required. 4. Classification equipment performance. 5. Media size required. 6. Media type required.

Efficient separation of pyrite from other sulfides is of great importance for the metallurgical performance of flotation processes. In this work Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) were used to study the surface chemistry of pyrite in depression, activation and xanthate adsorption under conditions of controlled potential. Modifications of pyrite surfaces after treatment with depressants (lime, sulfur dioxide, sodium cyanide) and after activation with metal ions (Cu, Pb) were studied. The principal adsorption product identified on pyrite was dixanthogen whose formation started at about +0.15 V and +0.25 V (vs, SHE) in ethyl and amyl xanthate solutions, respectively. Copper xanthate was formed on copper(II) activated pyrite. Activation mechanism of pyrite by copper(II) salts is likely to be electrochemical where copper occurs as copper(I) on the surface of pyrite. Effective depression is achieved by sulfur dioxide and sodium cyanide. Depression at high pH is due to formation of iron(III) hydroxides. Calcium ions do not affect the electrochemistry but adsorb on pyrite and reduce the surface sites for dixanthogen adsorption.

"Hecla Limited has been investigating the potential benefits of using a Spendrup/Compact Filter Technic (CFT) diesel filtration system to remove diesel particulate matter (DPM) from the mine atmosphere to optimize use of the available air. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has evaluated the scrubber efficiency for dust and DPM which is to be presented in another report. This paper reports on a new mining application of a carbon particulate sensor’s ability to continuously monitor long-term mine DPM levels in conjunction with the scrubber evaluation. Magee Scientific is the manufacturer of the Aethalometer®, a continuous black carbon monitor which has been used extensively in worldwide ambient air quality monitoring networks. Two Aethalometers were used at the mine to assess their potential to continuously track underground DPM levels. In this first underground mine application, the Aethalometers were used to continually monitor black carbon (BC) in the intake and exhaust of the CFT scrubber system. Results showed that an off-the-shelf Model AE33 Aethalometer could continually track underground BC levels for extended periods of time over the course of the six-week trial. Data at the scrubber intake over 14 days of testing showed that DPM filtration would be required less than half of the time to maintain BC levels below 50 µg/m3. If the Aethalometer BC data output were “smart coupled” to control a 200-HP in-mine scrubber, significant electrical cost savings would be realized. INTRODUCTION Mine ventilation airflow quantities are calculated to maintain a safe and healthy environment for miners. Dilution of diesel particulate matter (DPM) is often a key factor used to determine the required quantities of ventilation air (Bugarski et al. 2011). DPM emissions and exposure levels are highly variable depending on mine schedules and activities (Janisko & Noll 2010); however, lacking technology to continuously monitor levels, mine ventilation systems are often over-designed in order to handle worst-case scenarios to ensure that DPM levels are maintained at or below regulatory limits. As mines go deeper it becomes more difficult to supply air, and the development of new shafts for air is not economically feasible (Basu et al. 2008). Cleaning and reuse of available air then becomes an attractive option to maintain good air quality."

The microtunneling project for the State of Hawaii's Natural Energy Laboratory (NELH) facility in Kona, Hawaii, was awarded to Nova Group Inc., Napa, California. Nova has developed both microtunnel and deep pile cofferdam experience. Both of which would be required for this project. The project was designed by Makai Ocean Engineering of Honolulu as a continuation of the Ocean Thermal Energy Project (OTEC). The world's first OTEC plant has been successfully operational at NELH since 1982 netting approx 50 kw of usable electric power from a gross generation of 210 kw. A second plant designed to draw 39°F cold water from 3,000 ft below sea level and produce a gross output of 1 mw with a net 500 kw of usable power required 2 - 54 in. finished diameter pipelines. An ongoing problem with earlier offshore pipelines has been the damage to the near-shore pipes within the surf zone. The necessity for a deeper connection between the land based pipe and submerged sea pipeline was obvious. Earlier pipelines had been drilled and shot through the shoreline. This process was only practical at shallow depths. Makai Ocean Engineering and the NELH scientists looked at different methods to get the pipeline through the shoreline at a depth of 80 ft below sea level. The WIPP (Waste Isolation Pilot Plant) Project near Carlsbad, New Mexico. is a research and development project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, designed to demonstrate the safe disposal of radioactive waste. A mine (repository) is being developed 2150 feet below the surface in a thick salt bed, which will serve as the disposal medium. The underground ventilation system for the WIPP project was originally designed based on a fixed project scope. The design criteria and ventilation requirements were developed for the performance of various activities as then envisioned towards the achievement of this goal. However, in light of new information and actual site-specific experience at WIPP leading to a clearer definition of the scope-related programs and activities, it was realized that the existing ventilation system may need to be modified. A re-assessment of the ventilation requirements--based on the current status of the facility and a clearer definition of the scope of the experimental programs, waste storage methodology, mine developmental activities. and current equipment list--indicates a two- fold increase in underground airflows from 210,000 cubic feet per minute (cfm) to 425,000 cfm. Various options to provide the increased airflow to the underground facility were considered and analyzed. Based on the techno-economic analysis, safety and environ- mental considerations, and other conditions unique to a facility like WIPP, it was decided to construct a new shaft to serve as the primary fresh air intake, along with the installation of additional fans in parallel with the existing set up. Low cost and the ease with which the new design could be implemented and integrated into the existing ventilation system with minimum impact on current activities and projected schedules were the guiding factors in designing the shaft and related ventilation modifications.

INTRODUCTION The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a research facility located in Southeastern New Mexico. The WIPP is being developed by the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) to demonstrate the safe storage of defense-related radioactive wastes in bedded salt. Since the WIPP is a research facility. a number of large-scale in situ experiments have been planned and are currently under construction (Munson, 1983). These experiments were designed to study various aspects of nuclear waste storage in bedded salt such as mechanical responses and creep closures of drifts, thermal response due to heated canisters, and thermally-induced fluid migration. One purpose of the WIPP is to develop and demonstrate a general predictive structural analysis capability for a bedded salt repository. One set of experiments, called the Geomechanical Evaluation (Room G), is heavily instrumented to study the creep around several rooms with different configuration. A Layout of the Geomechanical Evaluation room is shown in Figure 1. One portion of it consists of wedge shaped pillar where two drifts intersect at an angle of 7.5 degrees. The pillar can be seen at the bottom of Figure 1. One purpose of the wedge pillar experiment is to study progressive pillar failure in the tip region. Another is to determine how nonuniform pillar thickness affects creep closure of the drifts. An important aspect of the experiments is the correlation between experimental data and corresponding pretest finite element analyses of the site. The finite element simulations serve two purposes. First, the computer simulations aid in understanding the experimental results by providing calculated stress. strain and displacement fields that cannot be measured directly. Second, comparison of calculated and measured drift closures serves as a method for validating or improving the finite element models and the constitutive models employed. The wedge pillar geometry required a 3-D finite element creep calculation. Results from these 3-D calculations will be presented in this paper. A 2-D plane strain double drift model which approximates the wedge pillar geometry at a slice perpendicular to the drift has also been performed and will be compared to the 3-D results in this paper. FINITE ELEMENT COMPUTER PROGRAMS Two finite element computer programs. JAC (Biffle, 1984) and JAC3D (Biffle. 1986), were used. JAC is a 2-D finite element program developed for quasi-static analysis of non-linear solids. It employs the conjugate gradient iterative technique to obtain a solution Spatial integration is performed using a single gauss point in each four node quadrilateral element. An hourglass viscosity technique is used to control the zero energy modes that occur with single point integration. The single point integration combined with the explicit nature of the program and exploitation of CRAY-1 computer architecture results in very efficient execution J4: results were compared to results obtained with eight other 2-D structural creep computer codes in the second WIPP benchmark exercise (Morgan, 1981) JAC3D was derived from JAC to treat 3-D finite element models and has many of the same characteristics including single point integration and hourglass viscosity. In fiscal 1996, the US Congress directed that the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) be closed. Certain functions were reassigned to other agencies. The remaining employees were separated and the unoccupied sites were decommissioned. As a result, 12 locations were closed and about 1,200 employees were terminated in March 1996. About 600 employees at five locations were reassigned to other federal agencies. This article provides a summary of the continuing functions, the agencies involved and the points of contact for each continuing function. The functions that were discontinued are also identified. The functions that have been maintained and transferred to other agencies are: ? Portions of USBM's Mineral Information and Analysis program formerly conducted in Washington, DC and Denver, CO were assigned to the US Geological Survey (USGS). ? The Mineral Land Assessment program in Alaska (Anchorage and Juneau) was transferred to the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM). ? The Health and Safety Research program in Pittsburgh, PA and Spokane, WA was reassigned on an interim basis to the US Department of Energy (DOE). In fiscal year 1997, it was permanently assigned to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). NIOSH is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention within the US Department of Health and Human Services. ? Environmental Research at Pittsburgh, PA was assigned to DOE. ? Materials Research at Albany, OR was assigned to DOE. ? The helium program was assigned to BLM, where it will be managed pending privatization. ? Coal and noncoal mine maps were transferred to the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE). The following locations were closed: ? Research centers in Denver, CO; Minneapolis, MN; Reno, NV; Rolla, MO; Salt Lake City, UT and Tuscaloosa, AL. ? Field operations centers in Denver, CO and Spokane, WA. ? Washington, DC headquarters office. To provide a concise picture of all of the affected functions, the following is a synopsis of the USBM program functions and facilities immediately before the closure. There were two principal programs: information and analysis, and research.

Side spalling/skin failure occurs due to the high-induced stress in underground structures. In such cases, rock bolting or other support systems are being used to control the skin failure or spalling of the pillar. The nature of these support systems is passive, which acts during the deformation. These support systems restrict the displacement considerably of the side/or roof surface of the excavation. Ultimately, it improves the stability of the structure because of the increment in residual strength of rock mass. It is noted that these passive support systems give very low confinement in the range of 0–0.015 MPa at the onset of failure. As the level of confinement will be very low and dependent with progress of failure, triaxial test was not found practically suitable. Thus, an alternative procedure of testing has been proposed. In the procedure, sides of sample have been restricted little bit by using adhesive tape. It provides the limited boundness on the lateral direction (LBLD) of rock specimen. The uniaxial compression strength (UCS) test has been performed on 30 numbers of cylindrical rock specimens using the servo-controlled stiff testing machine. Specifically, two rock types (medium-coarse–grained and coarse-grained rocks) were studied in terms of stress–strain behaviour so that a full residual strength envelope for each specimen was obtained. This study reveals that the residual strength of limited confined rock specimens has been significantly increased as compared to unconfined rock for both groups of rock types. The average residual strength of LBLD specimens of fine-grained rock and medium coarse-grained rock has been increased around 12 times, and five times as compared to unconfined rock, respectively. The average peak strength of LBLD rock specimens has been increased in the range of 30.5 to 48.6% for coarse-grained rock. The results of this study have been presented in terms of peak strength, residual strength and Young’s modulus of rock, and the post-peak failure behaviour of rock specimens was also critically analysed through a stress–strain curve.

Nearly 30 estimates of the minimum earth stress were obtained from hydraulic stimulation tests in 5 boreholes at depths varying from 0.6 to 4.3 km in jointed granitic rock near the Valles Caldera in New Mexico. This site is located within the transition between the Colorado Plateau and Basin and Range provinces. Stresses were determined from open hole hydraulic fracturing experiments conducted with water at pressures up to 48.3 MPa (surface). The virgin bottomhol e temperatures ranged up to 327°C. Pressure records show no evidence of rock breakdown, indicating injection into pre-existing joints. A typical pressure response consists of an early wellbore storage period followed by linear fracture flow, which then evolves into a steady pressure, fracture extension mode. Shut-in behavior is characterized by a sharp pressure drop followed by a more gradual decay. The minimum earth stress shows a general linear trend with depth, increasing with a gradient of 19 MPa/km. A low stress anomaly occurs from 2490 to 3100 m where the minimum stresses are as much as 28 MPa lower.

Over 10 million tourists have visited Vietnam in 2016. Travel and tourism accounted for 9.3% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2014. At the same time, as with many other resource-rich developing countries, Vietnam has been developing its extractive resources sector as a means of promoting the country’s social and economic development. In 2015, mining was the third largest contributor to GDP, and accounted for 8% of Vietnam’s gross domestic product. Vietnam is the third largest mineral producer in SE Asia. Although it produces zinc, nickel, bauxite, and manganese, coal mining is its most developed sector. The country has over two hundred coal mines, and total reserves of approximately 6 billion tons. Quang Nihn Province, where the World Heritage Site Ha Long Bay is located, is a very important tourism destination. It is also a coal-rich region where mining extraction and processing have been active since the early 20th century. Vietnam is signatory of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The country is aware of the importance and the challenges involved in managing the extractive sector in a way that does not undermine its tourism industry and yet that contributes to the country’s sustainable development. To this end Vietnam is taking actions towards implementing more advanced coal-mining extraction and processing techniques. The country is furthermore promoting a responsible mining sector, and is investing in programs that foster environmental protection and sustainable tourism. This paper examines the case of the Ha Long Bay region and the project involved in relocating the Hong Gai coal preparatory factory from a seafront area to a mountainside area. This paper provides a preliminary review of the initiatives adopted by the government of Vietnam to address the existing challenges that have resulted from a focus on promoting the country’s socio-economic development through the exploration of its rich coal endowment. Furthermore, it also describes Vietnam’s legal and policy frameworks. In conclusion this study identified that Vietnam has drafted a National Action Plan to implement the Sustainable Development Goals. The country is also taking an integrated approach to implementing the SDGs agenda and that it is assigning responsibility to a variety of ministries to achieve SDGs’ specific targets. Furthermore the country is changing policies and the legal framework in order to facilitating the execution of the work of agencies that are responsible for implementation, regulation and enforcement. In this respect, the approval of the National Action Plan on Sustainable Development Goals is another important step in that direction. While the decision of supplying its internal market with high quality coal helps minimize negative environmental impacts in Vietnam, exporting low quality coal to other countries does not help resolve the problem of CO2 emissions globally. With respect to the 2030 Agenda, this may be considered a temporary solution since to achieve the SDG goals, Vietnam will have to consider other sources of cleaner energy in order to align with the Sustainable Development Goals # 7 on affordable and clean energy.

The provision of a suitable working environment in deep level mines requires the accurate prediction of the ventilation heat load. Mathematical models for predicting strata heat load have been under development since the 1930's and 1940's. Computer models for predicting this and other mine heat sources have been developed and refined over the last 20 years. Some empirical studies have occurred and there is an increased emphasis on the importance of underground studies. Any theoretically or empirically determined predictive method must of necessity make assumptions. Underground space with its irregular configurations and rough wall surfaces cannot be described by simple mathematical expressions. Some heat loads, such as machinery, may occur intermittently while others such as the influence of water evaporation are very difficult to quantify accurately. Current popular models for predicting mine heat load have been surveyed. In testing some of these it is often found that each estimates significantly different quantitative values for the expected load in a particular underground space under study. These differences are explained by the assumptions, simplifications and omissions implicit in each of these models. It would be easier to estimate conditions at any point if heat flow into mine air passageways could be described by simple equations with associated statistically-based confidence ranges. Use of probability distributions to indicate confidence ranges allows any heat level estimate to be expressed as a range of values with limits for maximum and minimum expected values. This approach allows many of the limitations of the popular predictive models to be overcome. A heat prediction method using this approach has been developed based on Monte Carlo simulation and tested on mine data from a number of operations. Heat flow levels which can be predicted by simple equations supported by probability distributions allow the engineer flexibility in adjusting a predictive model to the underground characteristics appropriate to the mine site under study. The influence of all heat sources present in the mine opening must be included. Prediction methods must be updated as mining systems and machinery change with time. Heat sources interact with one another and the system must therefore be understood in its entirety.

In this paper, the results of bench scale testing of five different flotation processes to separate dolomite from phosphate are discussed. The effectiveness of each process interms of phosphate recovery and MgO content in the concentrate is used together with the reagent consumption as the basis of comparison. The water quality is found to play a major role in the performance of these processes. Effect of water hardness as well as other parameters are discussed.

Not since 1917 has a foreign company developed a standalone, grass roots gold mine in Russia. With Russia's political changes of the late 1980s, development of mineral prospects once again beckons foreign investors. Cyprus Amax's interest in Russia began before the mid-1991 breakup of the former Soviet Union. In 1990, Cyprus Amax began searching for such an opportunity. Early this year, production will begin at the Kubaka gold project located in the Russian Far East, near the Arctic Circle. The Kubaka project is a 1.75-kt/d (1,930-stpd) open-pit operation that will produce more than 9.3 t/a (300,000 oz/year) of gold. Identifying Russian mining opportunities In late 1990, the first Cyprus Amax people travelled to Russia. The trip was to determine the potential for western firms to develop profitable mines. This encouraging visit suggested that Cyprus Amax focus on the Russian Far East with its mineral riches and its easier access to the United States. The company's initial efforts thus focused on working with the Soviet Union's Northeast Geologic Expedition, the then government agency for exploration and geology in Russia's Far East. After the breakup of the Soviet Union, Cyprus Amax continued working with the same people, but they now represented new independent, nongovernmental entities. For three years, Cyprus Amax investigated numerous deposits. This resulted in the identification of two properties of significant interest, one of which was Kubaka. Location Kubaka is located in the Northern Evensk District of the Magadan Oblast in the Russian Far East. This is an area east of Siberia. The project is situated in a mountainous area of the Kolyma Range, about 300 km (985 miles) south of the Arctic Circle. It is 285 km (180 miles) north of the fishing village of Evensk and 380 km (235 miles) northeast of the silver-mining town Omsukchan. The site is 950 km (590 miles) northeast of the regional capital city of Magadan. Magadan, the political and economic center of the Oblast, has a population of about 150,000 people. It is served by a year-round deep-water port (with icebreaker assist) and an international airport with service to Moscow and Anchorage, AK. Access to the Magadan region

The abstract discusses the synthesis and investigation of polyacrylamide functionalized chitosan polymers (CS-PAMs) as selective depressants for pyrite in the flotation of galena and chalcopyrite from complex sulfide ore. The study employed response surface methodology (RSM) to model and optimize the flotation process, varying parameters like the degree of deacetylation of chitosan, weight ratio of chitosan to acrylamide, and CS-PAM dosage. The developed RSM models effectively predicted iron and lead grades and recoveries, while optimization showed optimal pyrite separation from galena and chalcopyrite using CS-PAM synthesized from chitosan with a high degree of deacetylation and a specific chitosan:acrylamide weight ratio.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the influence of atmospheric pressure changes on methane gas migration through mine seals at a mine site located in the Pittsburgh Coalbed. The mine gained access to a coal reserve through part of an abandoned mine and constructed nine seals to isolate the extensive old workings from the active mine area. Underground problems were experienced when atmospheric pressure fell, causing methane gas to migrate around the seals and into the active workings. During mining operations, methane gas levels exceeded legal limits and coal production was halted until the ventilation system could be improved. When mining resumed with increased air flow, methane gas concentrations occasionally exceeded the legal limits and production had to be halted until the methane level fell within the mandated limit. To assist the ventilation system, a pressure relief borehole located in the abandoned workings near the mine seals was proposed. Preliminary estimates by a gob gas simulator (computer model) suggested that a 0.76 m (2.5 ft) diameter pressure relief borehole with an exhaust fan would be necessary to remove enough methane from the abandoned area so that the ventilation system could dilute the gas in the active workings. However, by monitoring methane gas emissions and seal pressure, during periods of low atmospheric pressure, the amount of methane gas that migrated into the active mine workings was calculated. Researchers then determined that a relief borehole, 20.3 cm (8-in) with an exhaust fan could remove at least twice the maximum measured volume of migrating methane gas. Because gas concentrations in the abandoned workings could potentially reach explosive limits, it was proposed that the mine eliminate the exhaust fan. Installation of the recommended borehole and enlarging two other ventilation boreholes located in the abandoned area reduced methane gas leakage through the seals by at least 63%.

The Zn-Ag-Pb mineralization zone near Molai (Greece) was explored by more, than 60 drillholes. Promising results led to the decision of additional drillholes in order to confirm the expected spatial extension of the deposit. A multiobjective approach is described which optimizes the location of a set of 5 additional drillholes. The decision is based on estimation errors for grade, thickness and depth of the main ore bearing layer, with respect to cut-off values for grade and thickness. The linear combination of these variables defines a favorability index which is used for mapping optimal drillhole locations. The map shows several clusters of favorable cells. A declustrering algorithm is used to select a representative cell for drilling in each cluster.

The production of crushed stone in the United States has exceeded 1.0 Gtpy since 1987. Eighty percent of the crushed stone produced is used in the aggregate industry, accounting for over half of the quantity of natural aggregate consumed in the United States. Approximately 718 of the crushed stone produced in 1989 was limestone and dolomite followed by granite, traprock, sandstone and quartzite, miscellaneous stone, marble, shell, calcareous marl, volcanic cinder and scoria, and slate in order of descending volume (Table 1). Of the remaining 20% crushed stone produced in the United States and not used as aggregate, 12% is used in the manufacture of cement which is an important construction material. Only 8% of crushed stone is used in specialty products not associated with the construction industry. Therefore, this chapter will concentrate on crushed stone as used in aggregates, with occasional reference to other uses or to chapters which discuss specific nonconstruction uses of crushed stone. Construction aggregates are hard, essentially inert materials suitable for being formed into a stable mass by the addition of cementing or binding materials that produce a concrete by compaction, or by natural weight to produce a road or foundation fill. Aggregates are usually from 80 to 100% of the material volume of the construction masses in which they are used. Conditions necessary for a rock deposit to be developed for construction crushed stone include: Quality-should pass rigid specifications for strength and durability; Quantity-adequate volume of rock is needed to have a production life of at least 10 years, preferably 20 or more years; Market-must have adequate market to support a new crushed stone operation; Transportation-transportation cost must be competitive for the intended market; Environmental-the impacts of mining, processing and transportation of crushed stone on the environment at or surrounding the mine site must be within acceptable limits; Permitability-mining, processing and transportation of crushed stone must usually be permitted by governing agency. The following discussion will touch upon all facets of crushed stone operations from the mineral deposit and its geology to technology, uses, economic factors and end with governmental regulations of mining crushed stone. The sections are not designed to answer all questions, but rather to be an introduction to the crushed stone industry. Where more information is required, The Aggregate Handbook by Barksdale (1991) is recommended as the best general source.
