Kidston Gold Mines is a 14 000 tonnes per day rated operation located 280 kilometers west of Townsville in Queensland. The principle shareholder is Placer Development Limited. Kidston's orebody consists of 44.2 million tonnes graded at 1.79 g/t gold and 2.22 g/t silver. Production commenced in January, 1985, and despite a number of control, mechanical and electrical problems, each month has seen a steady improvement in plant performance to a current level of over ninety percent rated capacity.

Well-designed and maintained haul roads are the key to minimizing truck haulage onroad hazards and costs, as well as increasing productivity. In practice, however, designing and managing a haul road for optimal performance is often difficult to achieve, especially when resources assigned to design and construction are constrained. By understanding how a road design is developed from geometric, structural, functional and maintenance considerations and, critically, the interplay between these components in design and operation, optimal performance can be achieved. This paper briefly summarizes the evolution of mine haul road design, from the seminal USBM work of Kaufman and Ault in 1977, through to current geometric, structural, functional and maintenance management design components. These augmented design and management guidelines have been developed over the past decade, both in response to the requirements of mine operators for safer and more efficient haulage systems, the truck manufacturers’ requirements for a more predictable and controlled operating environment and the recognition of human factors as a significant contributor to haulage accidents. While the human factor is the most problematic to address in a road design, the paper shows that the more that is known about human error, the better a road can be designed to accommodate those actions or non-standard practices that would, on a poorly designed road, invariably escalate an error into an accident.

"There is uncertainty in ultimate pit limits due to geologic variation and unpredictable economic landscapes. In this work we show how this uncertainty affects the ultimate pit and how it can be analyzed to improve the mine planning process. A stochastic framework using geostatistical simulation and parametric analysis is used to model the effects of geologic and economic variation on ultimate pit limits and overall project economics. This analysis is made possible by a new, highly efficient pit optimization implementation which can be automated and set up to calculate ultimate pits for hundreds of different scenarios in a matter of hours. Quantifying ultimate pit uncertainty early in the mine planning process allows mining engineers to make informed decisions regarding infrastructure placement, and to mitigate the possibility of incurring substantial costs relocating critical mine facilities. INTRODUCTION The mining industry is increasingly concerned with the effects of risk and uncertainty. Uncertain prices, unpredictable global markets, and unknown foreign exchange rates can alter the economic viability of a mining project in substantial ways. This economic uncertainty is compounded by geologic uncertainty. The extent and quality of any given deposit cannot be fully measured and is not known before consequential decisions must be made. These two sources of uncertainty are responsible for the majority of deviation between what happens during operation and what was initially planned. Understanding and explicitly quantifying this uncertainty will lead to better decision making and allow mining engineers and investors to be aware of what may occur. It is unrealistic to believe that one model, estimated from sparse measurements, is enough to capture both geologic and economic uncertainty and allow for optimal decisions. The entire breadth of uncertainty should be considered, as both upside and downside risks have large impacts on the investment potential and operational efficiency of mining projects. The workflow presented here uses Monte Carlo simulation and parametric analysis together to explicitly analyze the breadth of geologic and economic uncertainty as it applies to ultimate pit calculation and long range mine planning."

U.S. Borax has two tailings disposal requirements which are uniquely different in many respects, but with the common goal to minimize the impact on the environment, utilize dependable technology and minimize the economic impact. The existing borax mine in the grid Mojave desert of Southern California has gone through a series of changes in tailings disposal practices in the 56 years of operations, The other tailings disposal requirement is a new molybdenum mine, presently in the feasibility phase, in the high precipitation setting of Southeast Alaska. SOLUTION MINING Solution mining techniques present a means of extracting soluble ores, particularly such materials as salt and potash, from horizons which are not accessible by conventional mining. In the process of dissolving materials, it is evident that solution may be complete or partial. In general, the solution mining operations described in the following section relate to complete solution of the desired compound. Even though the solution of material is complete, there may be instances in which insoluble material is present to a large extent either as granular separated particles or as insoluble layers. The process required for obtaining the desired product involves access wells to reach the deposits, sufficient water supply to yield the production goals, and the development of an underground cavity. The process of solution mining, therefore, depends to a great extent on three factors: availability of a relatively pure strata or formation of salt or potash to be mined, access well or wells, and adequate control of the solutioning process so that enlargement of underground cavities can be fairly well delineated. Since halites represent the most general ores mined by this procedure, the considerations which follow are based primarily on the production of sodium or potassium chloride. The producing formations may be in the form of bedded evc~porites wherein the salt member may be some 30 to 500 ft thick or from salt domes in which great depths of salt occur. Solution mining has been carried out to depths of nearly 10,000 ft. The recovery of saturated brine from wells drilled to effect the solution-mining process leads to further processing. In many instances, the procedures are relatively simple and involve simple recrystallieation or fractional crystallieation, while in others more complex flow systems are required before a final product is obtained. The intent of this section is to provide information relative to the basic procedures for obtaining materials which are soluble in water and to acquaint the engineer with the various aspects of the overall problem which in many instances, may become quite complex and present numerous difficulties. The storage of fluids, particularly hydrocarbons, underground has proven to be a very important part of industry operations. Cavities formed in salt provide excellent storage facilities. The formation of well-defined controlled configurations of such cavities has been possible because of better understanding of the solution process, wide experience gained over nearly 30 yr, and improved technology in drilling and completing wells, surveying caverns, and the operation of numerous types of systems. Solution mining techniques will improve in the future. Many facets of the simple operation of pumping solvents and extracting valuable minerals require further study. Developments undoubtedly will occur to further the processes of mining by solution. In addition to those whose names appear in connection with the individual subjections which follow, a major role in assembling and processing the material in this section was played by Dr. D. A. Molybdenum, the 42nd element in the periodic table, is now a very important metal in industry of the United States and the world. Chemically, it is a very complex element having valences of 0, +2, +3, +4, +5, and +6, and can exist as a mixture of these valences in many compounds. It was discovered and separated by Scheele in 1778. At the present time, molybdenite is the only important commercial source of molybdenum. Molybdenum occurs in some 12-14 different recognized minerals, but practically all of the production is molybde¬nite. As late as 1915, it was considered a rare metal. Germany made extensive use of it during the first world war, which resulted in the establishment of a molybdenum industry in the United States at Cli¬max, Colo., in 1917. It was not until the mid-1920s when its introduc¬tion to steelmaking developed for the US automobile industry that the metal gained important acceptance. The first notable example was the Willis-Saint Claire automobile introduced in 1921 by C. Harold Willis, formerly chief metallurgist for Ford Motor Co. Molybdenum has also been produced in the US from wulfenite (PbMoO4) from Arizona and Nevada, and a small amount of molyb¬denite was produced up to the early 1970s as a coproduct from two molybdenum-bismuth mines in Quebec, Canada. The first byproduct production of molybdenite from a copper con¬centrating operation was achieved at Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, and was followed shortly by the Utah division of Kennecott Copper Co. in the mid-1930s. This section of the Handbook is divided into four main subdivi¬sions: Chapter 2, which deals with the concentration and recovery of molybdenite from primary molybdenum ores; Chapter 3, which deals with the recovery and separation of molybdenite as a byproduct from copper production; Chapter 4, which deals with the conversion practices employed for converting molybdenite to the oxide or metal form; and Chapter 5, which covers the uses of molybdenum in steel¬making, chemicals, pigments, lubrication, catalysts, etc. The Free World molybdenum production, for the past eight years from all sources, is shown in Table 1. 2. Primary Molybdenite Ores General In 1978 there were four primary molybdenite recovery plants in operation: Climax, Endako, Quests, and Henderson. For over half a century the Climax mine has been by far the largest and most important source of molybdenum in the world. During the early 1970s a few primary molybdenite mines in British Columbia were shut down due to adverse economical conditions. The largest of these was British Columbia Molybdenum, formerly owned by Kennecott Copper Corp. The Climax plant and operations are described in detail and the opera¬tions of the other plants are summarized following a general discussion of recovering molybdenite from primarily molybdenite ores. Recovery of molybdenite as a byproduct will be taken up in Chapter 3. Geology Molybdenite production from mines in which it is the sole or preponderantly important mineral is confined to ore bodies in granites or igneous-type rocks or pegmatite dikes. More than one state of mineralization is sometimes present as at Climax, York, Hardy, and Questa. In the case of Climax, important byproduct recovery of tung¬sten, tin, pyrite, and monazite is also attained. The molybdenite is commonly disseminated very finely in the siliceous granitic gangue but does occur in stringers and blebs in silicified mineral solution channels. Treatment of Primary Molybdenum Ores All primary molybdenum ores are low in molybdenite, the content ranging from less than 0.20% MoS2 to a high of about 0.40% MoS2. A high resistance to grinding is a common ore characteristic combined with a habit of very fine dissemination of molybdenite in the siliceous portion of the ore. Because of low MoS2 content, high hardness, and fine dissemination of molybdenite in primary ores, it has been necessary to develop a special mill treatment which yields an accepta¬ble recovery at a reasonably low milling cost. Essentially, the treatment consists of intensive rougher flotation at a relatively coarse grind with production of a low grade rougher froth containing a substantial percentage of the molybdenite in the form of low grade middling particles, followed with multistage regrinding to liberate the locked molybdenite and several stages of flotation cleaning to produce a finished grade concentrate. Rougher flotation on pulp ground to ap¬proximately 35 mesh is common practice, even if complete liberation of molybdenite from siliceous gangue may require regrinding to 200 mesh. The flotation of middling particles with a very low content of molybdenite in the rougher flotation step has been made possible by the application of a combination of reagents first developed at the Climax mill and used with some modification in the treatment of all primary molybdenum ores. I am not a member of AIME, and this is my first annual meeting. As a lifelong member of the non-ferrous metals industry I have enjoyed listening today to speakers point with pride and view with alarm the public relations activity or lack thereof in the halls of government, as well as at the grass roots. There is much to be alarmed about, to be sure, but also some accomplish¬ments to be viewed with pride. Other speakers have given a broad overview of our industry's relations with their several publics. I will be specific about two incidents in which The Anaconda Company faced the loss of confidence of a large portion of its publics: the nationalization of our properties in Chile in 1971 and the closing of our under¬ground mines in Butte, which was announced last October. If I have a minute left over, I will speak about our concern for the loss of confidence in business institutions which has been re¬vealed in recent public opinion polls.

Metallurgically, the term agglomeration is used to describe processes whose goal is to form balls, briquettes, nodules, flakes, or other sized shaped particles from loose, usually fine, incoherent particles. In practice it includes such varying processes as the briquetting of coal dust and other substances, the balling and induration (heating) of such nonmetallics as cement, fluorspar, lightweight aggregates, etc. It includes such widely used processes as the sintering of nonferrous concentrates, such as those copper, lead, zinc, etc. The agglomeration of specific nonferrous metal concentrates is discussed in detail in the section of this handbook devoted to that particular metal. Agglomeration processes are of particular value to the iron and steel industry where the nature of the primary reduction process, the blast furnace, requires for best results a burden essentially free of fines. This is a change that has taken place since about 1960. Prior to that time many fine unsized ores were fed to the furnace. The development of the pelletizing process gave to the industry a chemically controlled closely sized product that increased the produc¬tion rate and reduced the costs so much that unsized fines are seldom used in modem furnaces. Steel plants produce many fine sized waste products such as fine dust (fine ore coke and gangue) and mill scale. These products, which have a valuable iron content, are usually sin¬tered directly at the plant for reuse. Fine sized ore concentrates are usually pelletized at the mine and shipped as pellets to the steel plant. Common practice in some areas producing natural high grade ores is to screen the ore at the mine to about 3/8 in. The oversize is shipped "as is" and constitutes blast furnace feed. The / in. may be shipped to the steel plant where it may be sintered or otherwise agglomerated. At some mines the fines may be pelletizied prior to shipment. With the development of large ocean ore carriers, and with the transportation of slurried concentrates or fines, a trend has developed of constructing large pelletizing plants or other types of agglomeration plants near large consumption centers (i.e., in the Netherlands or Japan) where ores of many types are brought together, ground if necessary, blended, and agglomerated. As an indication of tonnages of agglomerated materials produced, for iron materials alone (the largest share of the total) production in 1970 in the U.S. was Million gross ton Sinter 40.7 Pellets 43.1 Briquettes, nodules, & others 0.1 Total 83.9 During the 1960s, U.S. production of sinter rose from 40.3 million gross tons in 1961 to a high of 48.7 million in 1964, then settled back to almost the 1961 figure in 1970. Pellet production rose steadily from 14.4 million gross tons in 1961 to the 59.9 figure for 1975. Worldwide, sinter production in 1966 was estimated at 340 million mt (mainly in Europe, Russia, Japan, and the U.S.) and pellet produc¬tion the same year at 64 mt (primarily Canada and the U.S.). World pellet production capacity rose to 200 million tons in 1976.

16.1.1-VENTILATION'S ROLE Importance of Ventilation and Environmental Control-Mine ventilation is necessary for the preservation of human life and for the conduct of operations involved in the underground extraction of minerals. It clearly is the most essential of the functions attendant to mining, yet it is auxiliary to the primary objective in mineral extraction. Ventilation in mining thus poses a paradox: ideally, it should be carried out with minimum interference with and cost to production operations, yet it is absolutely vital in providing adequate environmental con¬ditions to support mining. Deterioration of the atmosphere, along with rising ground pressure, imposes the ultimate constraint with depth in underground mining. Ventilation requirements and costs rise rapidly with depth. To preserve atmospheric quality under intense heat conditions, ventilation at great depths must be supplemented by air condition¬ing. Likewise, when mining at any depth under severe or excessive conditions of gas, dust or humidity, supplementary control measures must be employed. In recent years, environmental standards in mines have been raised substantially. While limits are based on human tolerance, increasing concern is being expressed for standards of human comfort. The reasons are economic, as well as humanitarian. Worker performance and longevity correlates closely with environmental quality. Further, adverse accident and insurance compensation rates are a consequence of unsatisfactory environmental conditions. No mining company can afford to be lax in its environmental and ventilation practices. Functions and Processes-Ventilation is the control of air movement, its amount and its direction. As a means of quantity control, it is one of the constituent processes of total air conditioning, the simultaneous control within prescribed limits of the quality, quantity and temperature-humidity of the air. Ventilation is the most common and most. important conditioning process employed in mines for air environmental control. In mine ventilation, air is coursed through the mine workings and openings themselves and, for auxiliary purposes, through vent tubing and ducts. Thus, many interdependencies exist between the mining system and ventilation method. In fact, the two often have evolved ,jointly, as in room-and-pillar extraction of bedded or tabular mineral deposits, such as coal. Ventilation in mines today is provided almost exclusively by large fans, although air flow may result due to natural (thermodynamic) conditions. As mines increase in depth, size and complexity, demands on the ventilation system to maintain more stringent standards of environmental quality likewise rise. On the other hand, never have the technology and resources of the mining industry to cope with environmental problems been so well developed as they are today. In spite of rising costs, it is unlikely that further progress in mine ventila¬tion and air conditioning must await technological breakthroughs. 16.1.2-NATURE OF THE MINE ATMOSPHERE Air Mixtures-Air is a gaseous mixture comprising the natural atmosphere at the surface of the earth. AMAX Inc. climax's mine-mill complex at Climax, Colorado is best known for its molybdenite production: 50,000 TPY of molybdenite flotation concentrate (95% MoS2) from mill heads containing 0.35% molybdenite. Less recognized are the byproducts that are concentrated from the tails generated in the rougher flotation circuit (see Figure 1). Climax recovers a heavy mineral concentrate by passing the rougher tailings from molybdenite flotation over Humphrey spirals (Figure 2a). This concentrate is floated using xanthate at pH 4 to remove sulfides, principally pyrite. The tails from the pyrite float are then cleaned of quartz, feldspar and light minerals by tabling (Figure 2b). Amine flotation follows at pH 1.5 and 75°C to float monazite (Figure 2c). The present circuit at Climax dries the monazite flotation tailings and utilizes high intensity cross-belt magnetic separation Figure 2d) to generate a high grade wolframite concentrate and a low-grade cassiterite product, both of which are contaminated with the mineral brannerite, (UO, TiO, UO2)TiO3. The uranium specifications have recently become difficult to meet due to the increasing percentage of brannerite reporting in the mill feed. A plant is being built utilizing hot sulfuric acid and sodium chlorate to leach this uranium from the monazite flotation tailings prior to their being fed to the wolframite- cassiterite magnetic separators. This modification is the subject of our paper.

Pastefill is being increasingly considered as a viable fill by underground mine operators. Mount Isa Mines (MIM) chose pastefill to fill their deep copper mine (>1200m deep) after considering various other types of fill in the feasibility studies. During the development of pastefill at Mount Isa (1996 - to date) the Mining research of MIM developed two cost effective, reliable and simple testing methods and used. With the help of these tests the behaviour of MIM pastefill was studied thoroughly and the most optimum mix design for pastefill was achieved. The MIM's pastefill plant, the largest in the world with a capacity of 450rph continuous pastefill production and unique in the process used, has been built (1998-1999) to produce pastefill to the specification developed through extensive testing program using the Flow Cone and Mini Slump cone Tests. As a consequence, it is now possible to select the optimum pastefill mix designs and predict their flow behaviour in bore holes or pipe lines using only these tests. MIM Blended Tailings Pastefill (BTPF) uses 3-3.55 Portland cement and the cost of pastefill is much lower than the total tailings pastefill, that could be produced from the same tailings.

Numerous articles have been written about the coal mine ; he has been compared with brave men who have gone out to conquer some unknown hazard throughout the ages. Now, however, modern mining is no longer something to be avoided, but a vocation that anyone can be proud of, with remuneration equal to or above that of almost any industry. A concerted effort is being made each day by both the operators of most mines as well as the state and federal inspectors to see that coal mines are as safe or safer than work places in any other industry. How- ever, it is true that mine fires and explosions have occurred in the mining industry since its inception. One of the earliest accurate references to such an occurrence is found in the transactions of the Royal Society of London. In the Colliery Managers' Handbook, 1898, Caleb Pamely writes of an explosion that occurred at Fatfield, England in August 1708, resulting in the deaths of 69 persons. He states: "Three of them, viz, two men and a woman, were blown quite up from the bottom of the shaft, fifty-seven fathoms deep, into the air, to a considerable distance from the mouth of the pit." It is interesting to note that women were employed as miners in England during that period. In the United States, the first record of coal mined was in 1702 by the Jamestown colonists. In 1786, about 20 years after Pittsburgh, PA was first settled, a charter was granted by William Penn to mine coal on the banks of the Monongahela River. Then in 1803, the first important coal company, the Lehigh Coal Co., was established. From this beginning, the mining industry continued to grow in importance and the first state mining law was formulated in 1870. The Pennsylvania state mining law was followed in 1873 by Ohio's, and in 1876 by Maryland's. A mine explosion at Avondale, PA in 1869 stimulated state legislatures to formulate these early laws. In 1907 near the town of Fairmont, WV, there were, within three days, two explosions resulting in a total of 597 deaths. Because of this, the federal government took action and by 1910, the US Bureau of Mines had been established. This was perhaps the most significant change in health and safety for miners during the first half of the 20th century as the USBM concentrated its entire efforts in the study, research, and testing of methods totally directed towards improvement of the health and safety of the miner. After a mine disaster in Illinois, a federal law was passed in 1940 calling for federal coal mine inspectors. Then in 1969, Congress enacted the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act following a mine explosion near Farmington, WV. In 1977, the law was revised and included noncoal mining operations.

This paper is a brief review of the lubrication requirements of enclosed gearing on earth moving equipment, particularly as they apply to intermediate and large draglines and shovels used in open pit mining operations. It discusses the requirements of spur, helical and herringbone gearing in both horizontal and vertically mounted applications. The effects of base stock, oil viscosity, additive treatment, quantity of oil and method of application are considered. In addition, a newly designed circulating oil system for enclosed swing gear cases and the reasons for its development are discussed.

This paper presents the basics of EPA’s Hazard Ranking System (HRS), which is used to evaluate sites for possible inclusion on the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL). The paper describes the surface water, ground water, air, and soil exposure pathways and how they are applied to mining sites. Key factors contributing to the site score include the likelihood of a release, waste characteristics, and the targets for each pathway. Waste volumes, definitions of landfills versus surface impoundments, and background concentrations are of particular importance to mining and smelting sites. Because of the presence of metals, large waste volumes, and observable releases, mining and smelting sites often receive high enough scores to be proposed for the NPL based on a single path-way. Neverthess, owners and operators can take steps to reduce the risk of being scored, and to reduce the potential for high scores.

By 1968 Cyprus Pima was milling 38,000 tpd of copper ore using a conventional flowsheet consisting of three stages of crushing rod mills and ball mills. A 15,000 tpd expansion was put on stream late in 1971 using primary crushing, semiautogenous mills, and ball mills. Identical ore is treated in both concentrators. This paper shows the weight and life of each individual liner for each crusher and each mill over a four year period from 1974-1977. Power and media consumption are shown for the same period and a comparison is made between the two reduction methods.

I first met Milton Wadsworth in 1951 as an eighteen year old junior taking his mineral processing course at the University of Utah. He guided my senior thesis, evaluating the then new polymer flocculants on settling uranium leached ore pulps. This was before ion exchange and solvent extraction. After my military service and a brief working stint at Kennecott he supervised my PhD work. He encouraged me to be active in AIME and its constituent societies, where both of us have been directors of AIME and presidents of TMS. He has been a consultant for research groups that I have managed. Above all, he has been my mentor and friend for nearly 45 years. Thus, I am honored and particularly pleased to receive 5MB's Wadsworth Award.
