This paper attempts to close the gap between extensive rock testing with field measurements and the mine operator's need for safe mine layouts and alternatives. It was found that many of the variables that influence mine geometry and worker safety are relatively unimportant while others are critical. The development of empirical relationships which tie the critical variables to the "safe useful life" of a trona mine layout and observations made in 140 production areas where the variables were researched over a fifteen year period are discussed. The concepts presented may have applicability in mine design for other bedded deposits.

Germany as an industrial nation is highly dependent on the import of mineral or metal resources. Sources which have not been considered until now are the marine mineral resources (MMR), which in recent times are enjoying more and more increasing interests and which might provide in the future a considerable contribution to the supply security on metal resources not only for the industrial countries. Backed up by the German government’s "National Masterplan Maritime Technologies" (NMMT) and corresponding industrial R&D-activities, the idea and the advantages of deep-sea mining is gaining more and more interests and supporters with respect to industrial and political considerations on strategic raw material resources as well as on the development of deep-sea mining technologies. The NMMT aims to initiate growth and increase the competitiveness of the German maritime industry on international markets and covers about 10 different marine and ocean technology sectors including deep-sea mining.

This study focuses on the amosite mining region in South Africa and associated health effects, compared to other mined asbestos fiber types. Historically, dust and fiber levels were high in the amosite mills and mines, and many miners and members of the surrounding communities were exposed to the fibers. Research has shown that amosite produces both benign and malignant disease. Nevertheless, the mesotheliomagenic potential of amosite is several fold lower than crocidolite. The risk of disease associated with amosite exposure is difficult to quantify. Reasons for this include the scarcity of available information, including fiber measurements, and case ascertainment, as well as the juxtaposition of the amosite and crocidolite asbestos seams in South Africa. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. The introduction of social media platforms has ushered in a new era of interaction and information exchange, which impact business-to-society relationships. Mining companies are closely watching these platforms, as the industry takes a cautious approach to control flows of information. This paper explores the risks, challenges and opportunities of using social media, based on a qualitative mixed methods investigation with stakeholders from the Canadian mining industry. Generational and language barriers, misunderstanding and limited motivation from regulators make implementing social media platforms challenging and risky at an organizational level. The benefits of social media include being able to mobilize communities and share information in real time. Despite the challenges, the study found that 62% of mining stakeholders are incorporating social media tools, mostly in an ad hoc manner. Flexible strategies for transparent communication and public engagement are creating new opportunities for information exchange.

Pillars in underground limestone mines are required to support the overburden and provide a safe, stable working environment for mining personnel and equipment. Pillar stability was assessed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in underground limestone mines in the Eastern and Midwestern United States. It was found that current mine layouts have been successful in providing support to the overburden, while a small number of isolated pillar failures were observed. The stable pillar layouts and failed pillars were plotted on a chart that demonstrates the relationship between pillar width-to-height ratio and pillar stress. The results show that pillar failures occurred at the lower range of width-to-height ratios and can occur at relatively low stress levels. Zones indicating the potential risk of pillar instability are shown on the chart, based on hazards associated with the onset of rib spalling, large angular discontinuities and unconfined pillars. The chart can assist limestone mine planners to evaluate potential instability in current or new pillar layouts that are similar to those included on the stability chart.

The concrete lining for a long 8.05 km (5 mi) section of New York City Water Tunnel No. 3 was cast in place. The contractor, Grow-Perini-Skanska, placed over76,841 m3 (100,505 cy) of concrete, pouring 24 hours per day, 5 days per week. The concrete was dropped 204 m (670 ft) to the tunnel level, transported by rail to a concrete remixer and pump, and placed in 146.3m (480 ft) of full circle forms. Some of the many challenges include the sheer magnitude of the job, navigating through drifts, a raise and curves, dealing with ground water inflows, and placing the concrete within time limits.

Grunerite asbestos (amosite) has been shown in epidemiological and experimental animal studies to cause lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis commonly referred to as asbestosis. An overview of the human and experimental animal studies describing the health hazards of grunerite asbestos (amosite) is presented. Of the many human studies describing the health hazards of asbestos, only three factories using mainly, if not exclusively, grunerite asbestos (amosite) have been studied. The first is a series of reports on a cohort of 820 workers from a plant located in Paterson, NJ. Among this cohort, 18.7% died of lung cancer and 17 mesotheliomas occurred. The Paterson factory closed in 1954 and moved to Tyler, Texas where it operated until 1972. Among the 1130 former workers in the Tyler plant 6 mesotheliomas were reported with 15.8% lung cancer mortality. The third grunerite asbestos (amosite) exposed cohort was an insulation board manufacturing facility in Uxbridge, United Kingdom. Here 17.1% of the workers died of lung cancer and 5 mesotheliomas occurred. The lung content from 48 Uxbridge workers was analyzed by analytical transmission electron microscopy for mineral fibers. The relationship between grunerite asbestos (amosite) concentrations in the lung correlated with grades of fibrosis and asbestos bodies and was lower than the concentration found in the cases with malignant tumors. The lung cancer cases contained more grunerite asbestos (amosite) than mesothelioma cases, and in the cases of non-alignant disease the concentrations were still lower. In both types of malignancies the concentration of grunerite asbestos (amosite) was very high-over a billion fibers per gram of dried lung tissue. Occupational exposure to airborne concentrations of between 14 and 100 fibers of grunerite asbestos (amosite) per milliliter after 20 year latency causes marked increases in lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis (asbestosis). © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Luminescence excited by electron bombardment, or cathodoluminescence (CL), is a very useful tool in petrographic examination of rocks, minerals and ores. Differences in luminescence colors and intensities allow detection and delineation of mineral species and composition zones difficult to separate visually by normal polarized light microscopy. The cold cathode CL chamber at Indiana University is used with a binocular microscope that has interchangeable attachments for a normal film camera, a digital camera and a fiber optic spectrometer. This allows imaging of the specimens as well as limited spectrographic analysis of the emitted luminescence. The chamber on this CL unit is large enough to accommodate several thin sections, polished mounts, grain mounts or rock slices at one time. Luminescence petrographic techniques were used to study alkali syenites and carbonatites from the Arkansas. Alkali feldspars in the syenites reveal a history of growth, fenitization and replacement through color and intensity differences. Primary orthoclase luminesces bright blue and is often zoned with a duller blue overgrowth of microcline. Fenitization of the feldspars is demonstrated by dull to bright red luminescence and replacement veins of albite often have a bright yellow green luminescence. Late microcline and perthites from the syenite pegmatites have a dull yellow to orange luminescence. Easily visible on this background of feldspars are grains of apatite (yellow), fluorite (violet), zircon (greenish), sodalite (orange) and mosandrite (green). Complex pseudoleucite syenites from Magnet Cove, Arkansas show similar minerals but also include xenolithic quartz (violet), manganwollastonite (bright orange), benitoite (intense blue) and lorenzenite (green). Carbonatites from Arkansas contain a wide variety of calcite textures and intensities of luminescence. Grains of carbonatite in well cuttings are easily distinguished from sedimentary calcites by their complex “flame” luminescence and the frequent presence of euhedral apatite grains (yellow). Apatite crystals separated from the Arkansas River Valley carbonatites by acid digestion show complex zoning. The cores of these apatites are yellow luminescing due to CL activation by Mn enrichment while the rims are violet luminescing due to REE enrichment. Complex zonation between the cores and rims is easily visible using CL.

Inn mining communities throughout the western United States, cows have always been part of the landscape as they graze on surrounding rangelands. Until recently, mining companies regarded these animals as something to be kept off their properties — especially any freshly reclaimed lands. During the last few years, though, this situation has begun to change. Today, cattle can be seen in a handful of mine settings, moving up and down the slopes of mine tailings and waste rock. These animals are being used by several companies to do some of the reclamation work once performed by large earth-moving equipment, mechanical spreaders, rippers and seed drillers. This is because cows can contour slopes more naturally and produce and spread soil nutrients in ways that tractors and ripping machines cannot.

Dumper operators are frequently exposed to whole body vibration (WBV) in surface mines. Surface mining activities involve the amalgamation of comparatively high intensity of vibration and extended exposure durations. Efficient risk reduction mandates knowing of important phases of a task that poses a threat to health of dumper operators. So far in India very limited studies have been reported on WBV exposure with regard to surface mines. This paper evaluates WBV of dumper operators based on ISO 2631-1:1997 Standards and European Union (EU) Directive 2002 for different phases of job cycle. Six dumpers were considered for this study and the vibration measurements were made for all the four phases of the job cycle by placing the triaxial accelerometer on the operator’s seat-surface and at the seat-back, independently. The findings of the study revealed that the haulage task (loaded travel and empty travel) remains the chief contributor to vibration exposure according to seat-surface and seat-back measurements. Maximum frequency weighted root mean square (RMS) of 1.12 m/s2 and 1.09 m/s2 were reported for empty travel task for seat-surface and seat-back measurements, respectively. For seat-surface measurements based on RMS, Z axis remains as the dominant axis of vibration for all the dumpers during haulage task, whereas for seat-back measurements, the dominant axis varies between X and Y. Exposure action value (EAV) based on RMS has exceeded the threshold value of 0.5 m/s2 for all the dumpers during loaded travel and empty travel for seat-surface as well as for seat-back measurements.

Asbestos first became an issue to Minnesota?s iron industry when it was revealed that mineral fibers similar to those in Reserve Mining?s tailings were being found in drinking water for several communities that used Lake Superior as their primary water source. This discovery turned what had largely been an environmental court battle into a case concerning public health. The courts listened to much conflicting and uncertain scientific testimony on the size and distribution of the mineral fibers and on the potential health effects imposed by them. In April 1974, the plant was ordered to shut down by a federal judge but the company quickly appealed the decision. The appeals court granted a stay and ultimately ruled that the plant?s closure could not be justified based on the unknown health effects of the mineral fibers since the consequences of such an action would have immediate and severe social and economic impacts. The plant was allowed to continue operation, but ordered to abate emissions to air around the plant and to switch to a land-based tailings disposal system. Much of the scientific uncertainty and public concern over mineral fibers in Minnesota?s taconite industry remain today. ©2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. INTRODUCTION The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has let a contract for the excavation of three rock stations, spaced about 3550' (1082m) apart, beneath Connecticut Avenue in Washington, D.C. Two previous rock stations have been completed, one of which had a crown pilot tunnel excavated to explore geologic conditions that would be encountered during the station excavation. This pilot tunnel was primarily for inspection by bidders and design was based on core hole information. The other rock station had no pilot tunnel and was also designed on the basis of core hole information. The three rock station areas, which are the subject of this paper, have been explored by crown pilot tunnels and an as-built report, with geologic maps and sections, has been prepared, for use by the design engineer as the basis of design for support of the structures. The geotechnical report describes the geologic structure in detail and relates it to excavation and support of the three crown pilot tunnels and the running tunnels which will be enlarged to create the 58'W x 44'H x 700'(+)L (17.6m x 13.3m x 212m +) stations. The information was complete enough to permit the design engineer to visualize the geologic structure and compute loads for the various types of rock conditions. It was therefore possible to determine the size and spacing of the steel sets for the several different conditions of rock structure encountered in the pilot tunnels.

The mining sector, which has an important place in terms of raw material and energy supply, is referred as a sector with one of the highest fatal accidents in comparison with other sectors. In this century, where occupational health and safety awareness has increased, it is important to review the past accident statistics and to determine the current deficiencies by using the information in the inventory. In this study, the Malmquist total factor productivity index (MPI) has been utilized to investigate the changes in the work accidents occurring in the Western Lignite Corporation (Turkey), where underground and surface production methods are applied, and to determine the measures to be taken. According to the results obtained, both the decrease in production amount and the increase in the number of accidents caused inefficiencies during the period in concern due to the expected 10-year economic life of the mechanized system operating in the underground production panel that came to an end in 2007 and the flooding took place in early 2017. Compared with the underground operations, it has been determined that production can be carried out at the appropriate scale despite the heavy working conditions encountered due to the changing climatic conditions and the progress of production in the surface operations.

The Yung-Chung-Tunnel in Taiwan, constructed for the Taiwan-East Railway Bureau, collapsed during construction when a water bearing, fractured marble zone was intersected. The inflow was approximately 4,000 liters/second. In spite of 30 relief holes the total inflow into the tunnel remained constant. The pre-excavation grouting through the re-aligned tunnel had to be conducted under extreme flow-conditions. A hot bitumen grouting program was selected for technical and economical reasons out of 13 international proposals. The technical challenges were: grouting under severe flow conditions high formation water pressures to be injected with hot bitumen at high temperatures and pressures The hot bitumen grouting program resulted in a dramatic reduction in the hydraulic conductivity and stabilization of the formation and facilitated a problem-free excavation.

In currently used mining methods, blasting techniques often causes dilution of valuable ore and results in costly processing requirements. In the context of narrow vein mining of thin and highly concentrated orebodies there is a need of a mining method that can reduce dilution in order to remain economically viable. This research project explored the viability of a new mining technology, thermal fragmentation, in narrow vein mining. Thermal fragmentation technology uses a flame jet to produce extreme heat that spalls the surrounding rock to a strategically located drill hole, as an alternative to traditional blasting. This paper creates a net present value (NPV) model of a mining method using thermal fragmentation, as well as for an existing method used for narrow vein mining; comparisons and evaluations were made regarding the feasibility of the new technology. It was found that while overall costs for thermal fragmentation were relatively high, reductions in wages, haulage and processing costs, as well as increased productivity and ore recovery, meant that the new method would improve the financial performance of any operation. These results identify that there is an opportunity to introduce the thermal fragmentation technology to narrow vein mines within Australia, in order to lower costs and increase profit.

The seepage forces generated around pressurized water tunnels in rock are investigated using the analysis tools of geomechanics. The theoretical background of the two-phase material behavior is explained and the equations of motion and continuity are presented. Applications on two case studies typically occurring in practice deal with the required minimum rock cover for a pressurized tunnel and the separation between two tunnels carrying different heads. The rock mass behavior as described by the Mohr-Coulomb and Hoek-Brown material models is investigated by numerical analyses and the results are compared. The effect of key material parameters on the safety factors and the associated modes of failure is discussed.

Longwall management, regular shield maintenance, and evaluation of ground control problems can be performed using real-time shield monitoring program. Based on real-time shield pressure data, evaluation of intensity and interval of periodic weighting, estimation of time-dependent pressure increase and the effects of geologic anomalies can be obtained. In this study, full-face shield pressure data of over 457 m (1,500 feet) of face advancement is analyzed to evaluate shield response in the presence of surface lineaments, floor undulations, and multiple main roofs. Shield pressure increase due to web cutting is also correlated with setting pressure during periodic weighting and normal time. In addition, time-dependent pressure increase rate on Sundays and holidays is also correlated with time average pressure and the location of previous periodic weighting.

Most mines are large producing 0-25 mmt annually. The coal is mine.) at depths ranging from .0-150 m 120-500 ft mining at 300 m .(,1000 ft) depth is anticipated in the future. Single and multiple seams ranging from 3-12 m 10-40 ft) in thickness are mined. Most overburden is unconsolidated and consists of sands, and sandy or silty clays. The stripping ratio (volume of overburden to volume of coal mined) varies from 3-L. The overburden and coal is mined in benches 8-12 m -(24-40ft) high; the high-wall angle is about 45 degrees. Bucket wheel and bucket chain excavators are commonly utilized for overburden and coal removal, Some of the large overburden stripping machines nave capacities. Ranging from 4400-10,000 bank cu ( 6000-14,000 BC) per hour. The overburden from the upper benches is transported around the pit using the trains and belt conveyors. It is deposited in the spoils using large stacker-conveyor systems capable of handling 2550-7300 cu m/hour (7500-10,000 cu yds/hour). The overburden from the bottom two or three benches is transported across the pit using the conveyor bridges which are computer controlled. Conveyor bridges capable of handling overburden up to 60 m (200 ft) high are currently in use; a 60 a (20e ft) high conveyor bridge has a capacity of 85 x 10 cu ( 118 x 10 cu yd) annually. The coal is loaded in the trains directly and shipped to power plants or coke oven plants.

The Canadian mining industry is one of the strongest in the world. Not only does the country produce a sizable amount of minerals and metals, Canada plays host to hundreds of global mining companies, large and small. The country, for the most part, recognizes the importance of natural resource development, particularly mining, to its economic well being. Like any country, though, there are federal and provincial regulations on the books that the industry takes issue with. But there are also certain economic incentive programs in place to encourage exploration and mine investment. And, unlike the industry and the United States government, the Canadian government and mining industry appear to have a reasonable working relationship.
