Five recently developed methods for determining nitrogen oxides in automotive exhausts have been evaluated from the standpoint of accuracy and applicability in current exhaust studies. Results showed that methods requiring conversion of nitric oxide to nitrogen dioxide as a part of the analytical procedure are subject to errors introduced by the instability of NO2. The extent of some of these errors has been determined and procedures have been developed to minimize undesirable influences. On the basis of the results obtained from this study, recommendations are made regarding procedures for batch type or continuous measurement of nitrogen oxides in exhaust streams.

Methods for converting WOCl4 to WCle were investigated in small-scale, laboratory apparatus to devise a method for preparing pure WCls suitable for conversion to tungsten metal. Chlorine, COCI2, and CCI4, alone and in combination with various forms of carbon, were tested as chlorinating agents at various temperatures. More than 95 percent conversion of WOCl4 to WCls was achieved with all reagents at 8000 C in the presence of activated carbon. Only CCl4 maintained its effectiveness in the absence of carbon at 800° C. The effectiveness of carbon was found to be related directly to its surface area.

The latest Active List of Permissible Explosives and Blasting Devices was published in July, 1929, as Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 2947, 2 under the title or "Active List of Permissible Explosives and Blasting Devices Approved Prior to June 30, 1929.' Subsequent Reports of Investigations 2253, 2958, 2962, 2972, 2988, 2992 and 3000, were issued to record the official actions taken during July, August, September, October, 1929, and January, February, and March, 1930. "Adequate lighting for all mining operations would unquestionably tend to promote both safety and efficiency; this would be true not only for men but also for the animals that man impresses into service in mines. The Markeeta Coal Co. and the Alabama Fuel & Iron Co. both operating mines in Alabama, have found that equipping mine mules with portable electric lights is more efficient, much more humane, and far more safe for both men and animals then the more or less usual method of forcing the animal to do its work essentially in darkness.This report is intended to give the mining industry data, that will aid in trying to bring about safe and efficient operation of mines.The authors desire to thank Charles F. DeBardeleben, president, Fred R. Bell, general manager, Hewett Smith, C. H. Shepherd, and R. A. Sensing, superintendents for the Alabama Fuel & Iron Co.; and Charles F. DeBardeleben, Jr., president, and H. M. House, superintendent for the Markeeta Coal Co., for their cooperation in furnishing the data for this paper.The eight mines operated by the Alabama Fuel & Iron Co. and one operated by the Markeeta Coal Co. in Jefferson and St. Clair Counties, Ala., are the only mines in Alabama where mules are provided with portable electric lights, and there are few if any mines in other States in which this system is in use.These two companies are convinced that equipping all mine mules with good lights decreases underground haulage cost by animals by prolonging the useful life of the animals, increasing their efficiency, lessening haulage wrecks and delays on haulage, and increasing production. Last but not least of the advantages would be the more humane treatment of the animals.The nine mines are developed by slopes along the dip of the coal bed, with double-room entries on 200- to 300-foot centers turned right and left off the slopes and with approximately 1 per cent grade in favor of the loads. Rooms are driven up or diagonally up the pitch from these entries.A surface hoist delivers the empties from the surface to the entry sidetracks at the slope and pulls the loads to the surface. From these sidetracks, mules pull one to four wooden cars, each of which holds 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 tons of coal, deliver the empties to the rooms and entry faces, and pull the loads to the slope sidetracks. The mule haul varies from 100 to 3,000 feet; there are no locomotives or trolley wires in any of these nine mines, seven of which are rated as gassy and two as nongassy by the Alabama state Mining Department."

The production of harmful pollutants from coal mines and/or from coal and associated strata has been a recognizable fact in the United States for over two hundred and seventy years. In 1698, Gabriel Thomas observed(l) that the colored water flowing from streams in this country was similar to that which flowed from the coal mines in Wales. Hence, water pollutants such as acid were being produced before any known coal mines were operating in this country. The coal mining industry has contributed to the increase of pollution by exposing large amounts of sulfide materials that enable the reaction of water, oxygen and sulfur containing materials to form acid. A map of the United States coal fields can be seen on Figure 1. The anthracite regions of Pennsylvania, although small when compared to the total reserves, have produced some of the country's major water problems. The map indicates the extent of bituminous reserves of the Appalachian and midwest regions. Also evident are the bituminous, subbituminous and lignite coal reserves in the west which have recently come into greater demand. Acid mine pollution is encountered in numerous states, but the major problem is found in the Ohio, Susquehanna, and Potomac River basins.(2) Most coal beds contain some sulfur which may be in the inorganic, sulfate, or sulfide form, and thus have the potential to produce sulfuric acid. However, much of the strata that overlays the coal beds also contains acid neutralizing materials. Therefore, the amount of acid produced depends upon the amount of both acid and alkali materials that dissolve in the water in any given mine. The common sources of sulfurous material in the seam or surrounding rock are generally called sulfur balls or "nigger heads" by the miners. Sulfur balls that have been observed(3) seem to be equally divided between those containing sulphuritic iron capable of producing sulfuric acid upon oxidation and those that are primarily calcium carbonate. It has been observed in many instances that two types of water, acid and alkaline, are being produced in the same mine. A study of the geological strata and a survey of subsidence, faults and sulfur balls will usually give some indication of why this happens. The reaction of pyrite (FeS2) with oxygen and water to form ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) by a series of complex chemical interactions is well documented but not well understood.(4,5) However, it is well known that the reactions to form the acid cannot occur unless all three constituents are present. Since pyrite is inherent in most coal seams and air is needed to sustain the miner, the most logical answer is to eliminate water infiltration into the mine, or to remove it from the mine before acids can form.

Low-temperature heat capacity determinations of the minerals goethite and pyrophyllite were made in the temperature range from 510 to 298° K. The entropies at 298.15° K were evaluated as 14.43 ±0.15 cal/deg mole for goethite and 56.6 ±0.5 cal/deg mole for pyrophyllite. The entropies of formation from the constituent oxides are -4.4 ±0.2 cal/deg mole for goethite and -12.3 ±0.6 cal/deg mole for pyrophyllite. The standard free energy of formation of goethite from its oxides is ?G°298.15 = 0.16 ±0.20 kcal/mole.

All bituminous-coal mines, by the nature of their product and inherent gassy tendencies, are subject to explosions or mine fires. The evolution from large, hand-loading sections employing numerous men and containing open-type equipment, lights, and nonpermissible explosives to small, concentrated mechanical sections with but few well-supervised men utilizing modern preventive equipment has not altered this premise. Mine catastrophes such as Centralia and New Orient No. 2, as well as recent disasters of less magnitude, have refuted the trend of thinking that modern equipment, will prevent or localize explosions and prevent widespread or loss of life.

In this Bureau of Mines investigation, the electrochemical polarization behavior of Fe and Fe-1BCr has been characterized in rigorously controlled 1[N] H2S04 solutions stirred with oxygen or an inert gas. Samples that under-went various levels of corrosion or passivation were examined using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and ion sputtering. Passivation of iron occurred at a potential of approximately 0.6 volt (1) in poorly stirred, oxygen-saturated solutions for forward polarization (scanning from cathodic to anodic potentials); (2) in pH-adjusted (increased), well-stirred, oxygen-saturated solutions for forward polarization; and (3) in well~ and poorly stirred, oxygen-and helium-saturated solutions for reverse polarization. Passivation of Fe-18Cr occurred at a potential of approximately -0.1 volt in helium-, nitrogen-, and oxygen-saturated solutions for all cases of forward polarization and most cases of reverse polarization. Elemental depth profiles obtained from AES sputtering measurements indicated that films or adsorbed species were present on iron samples in solution subjected to open-circuit, active, and transpassive corrosion, cathodic reduction, and passivation. This conclusion was reached by considering the distribution of the solution species, primarily sulfur, in the films, which were composed primarily of iron and oxygen. Sulfur was present throughout the films on actively corroding samples, in the outer regions of films of passive and transpassive samples, and on the film surfaces of open-circuit and cathodically reduced samples. For Fe-18Cr, sulfur was found on the surfaces of films on passive samples only, indicating that only the passive samples had films on their surfaces in solution. The films on electropolished and passive Fe-1BCr samples had the largest chromium concentrations, estimated to be approximately 45 at. pct, with less chromium in films of cathodically reduced, active, and open-circuit samples, in that order.

Provide a machine for economically drilling probe holes in coal mines (required where there's a possibility of unmapped, abandoned workings) to check for possible water flood or gas hazards ahead of the face. Approach A lightweight air-powered drill, that mounts on a light-weight frame anchored to the face with an expandable packer, is used to drill one or more probe holes. The anchor installs quickly and will lock the drill in any desired position. How It Works The drill is portable and can be broken down to small components for ease of transportation. One man can carry these sections through restricted access routes to the working place. Components that are separable are the anchor assembly, drill frame assembly, and drill motor assembly. The drilling sequence is as follows: A 2-inch-diameter anchor hole is drilled 2 feet deep. The fixed anchor tube is rubber packer is expanded. A second anchor hole is drilled through a bushing in the anchor frame. The removable anchor tube is inserted and its rubber packer expanded. (This anchoring system withstood pulls of up to 14,000 pounds.) Next, the frame is attached to the anchor with two screw knobs, and the motor is attached to inserted in the hole and the rubber packer is expanded. A second anchor hole is drilled through a bushing in the anchor frame. The removable anchor tube is inserted and its rubber packer expanded. (This anchoring system withstood pulls of up to 14,000 pounds.) Next, the frame is attached to the anchor with two screw knobs, and the motor is attached to the frame with a single locking pin. Installing the anchor and drill takes less than 12 minutes.

Table 8 provides data for the estimated value of world export trade of all mineral commodities from 1980 through 1991. It also provides a breakdown of the total into mineral fuels and non fuel minerals. These data have been developed from UN export trade data presented in table 9. The percent distribution and growth of the value of world export by major commodity groups are presented in tables 9, 10, and 11, respectively. In terms of industrial minerals (nonmetals), data in tables 10 and 11 include crude industrial minerals only, while table 8 includes an estimate for other industrial minerals. The 1991 estimates that appeared in the 1991 issues of this publication have been revised. It is typical for this section to review the year prior to the year of review because of the unavailability of data at the time of publication. The aggregated value of export trade in mineral commodities for 1992 was not available at the time of publication. The total value of nonfuel and fuel mineral exports for 1991 was about $616 billion in current (1991) dollars. The value of mineral fuel export trade accounted for about 53 % of the total mineral export trade. In 1980, the contribution of mineral fuel to the value of mineral commodity export trade had been almost 68%. The 1991 world mineral commodity export trade represents a 5.3% decrease (table 8) from that of 1990. The largest decrease was attributed to the decrease of export trade of fuel minerals (5%). The value of non fuel mineral export trade decreased by 4 %. Because the value export trade of all commodities increased by 1.2 %, the share of mineral commodities decreased from 19.2 % to 17.9 % of the total.

Comprehensive ventilation surveys are made to review the adequacy of the mine system with regard to both statutory requirements and/or company policy, to evaluate improvements to the current ventilation system and to plan for £stun expansion. If computer simulation is to be used for these purposes, accurate quantity and pressure measurements become an absolute necessity since the validity of the computer generated output is heavily dependent on the accuracy of the input data. Consequently ventilation surveys that are run to generate input data for computer simu¬lation must use the best data collection procedures to guarantee as accurate results as are possible. These requirements have led to modifications in procedures that are used for routine ventilation surveying. McElroy and Kingery (1957) have recommended that pressures be measured independent of quantities since minor changes in mine conditions have a greater effect on absolute pressure measurements than on quantity measure¬ments. They estimate that, for large mines, a pressure survey may take only 1 to 3 days while the corresponding quantity survey would require 1 to 3 weeks. Although this procedure would undoubtedly lead to more ac¬curate pressure measurements, its use for the development of computer input data is not recommended for the following reasons. Atkinson's equation, H = RQ2, is used in computer oriented analysis to develop the airway resistance, R, based on quantity and pressure loss measure¬ments. It can easily be seen that since R a 1/Q2 and R a H, the effect of errors in quantity measurement is, in fact, more significant than those in pressure measurement. "This Bureau of Mines report contains a tabulation of methane emissions during 1980 for all coal mines located in the United States with emissions greater than 0.1 MMcfd. Listed for each mine are methane emission quantity, location, and coalbed. The report also compares records of 1975 and 1980 and describes relationships between emissions in 1980 and the Bureau's coalbed gas content data on 11 mines.INTRODUCTIONMethane gas is a threat to safety in underground coal mines. Research by Government and industry has led to great gains in reducing methane gas ignitions and explosions. The development of advanced methane control techniques is necessary for the safe operation of more gassy mines and the implementation of rapid mining techniques.As part of this research, the Bureau of Mines has surveyed total methane emission data from underground bituminous coal mines in the United States and tabulated emissions from mines producing over 0.1 MMcfd of methane. This report is an update of similar studies previously described in Information Circulars 8733, 8659, and 8558 (2-4).3The data from 1980 were compiled from Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) records of air quality-quantity inspections made quarterly at each mine. The inspections involve measuring airflow and collecting air samples in the main returns. From these data, an average methane emission is calculated and used to represent the daily mine emission for each quarter. The methane emissions given in this report are the averages of the four 1980 quarters and do not include mine emissions from other sources such as degasification projects. Since a previous Bureau study showed that emissions from mines emitting less than 0.1 MMcfd represented only 2 pct of all emissions, 0.1 MMcfd was chosen as a lower limit for data collection (4)."

The Bureau of Mines has developed a rapid analytical method for the determination of anions by ion chromatography (IC) in phosphate rock mining materials and cement kiln dust (CKD). The procedure employs an Na2C03 fusion of the sample, followed by a water extraction that allows direct injection of the sample into an ion chromatograph without separator column poisoning by the transition metal ions. Fluoride (F-) and phosphate (P043-) were determined in 24 phosphate rock processing and waste material samples by the IC method. The results were compared with a pyrohydrolytic distillation-titration method for F-and a colorimetric procedure for P043-. Excellent analytical agreement was obtained for F-and p043-values determined by IC and the comparable wet chemical methods. Fluoride values ranged from 0.3 wt-pct in the filter cake to 3.6 wt-pct in phosphate rock concentrate. Phosphate values ranged from 1.2 wt-pct in the filter cake to 33.8 wt-pct in the rock concentrate. Fluoride, chloride, phosphate, nitrate, and sulfate in several CKD samples were determined by the IC method and standard wet chemical techniques. Excellent agreement was obtained between the two methods for all anions. A total of 113 CKD samples from all areas of the United States was analyzed by the IC method. Fluoride values ranged from <0.01 to 0.36 wt-pct. Chloride values ranged from <0.01 to 12.5 wt-pct. Sulfate values ranged from 0.41 to 31.6 wt-pct. Phosphate and nitrate were detected in only about 25 pct of the samples at >0.02 wt-pct. Maximum phosphate and nitrate values were 1.0 and 1.6 wt-pct, respectively.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and others have conducted a number of occupational exposure surveys since the publication of the International Agency for Research on Cancer report of 1989(1), which labeled diesel exhaust as a probable human carcinogen. These surveys have assessed diesel exhaust exposure using measurement of diesel aerosol and/or specific polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as indicators of exposure. This report reviews, available diesel exhaust aerosol and gas measurement techniques. Measurement of human exposure to toxic agents is the first step in determining the exposure-dose-response relationship. It is a fundamental step in risk assessment. Measuring exposure to diesel exhaust pollutants is particularly challenging due to the complexity and variability of exhaust components. This paper reviews current occupational health standards for diesel emissions and available diesel exhaust gas and aerosol measurement techniques. Although surveys in mines have primarily assessed diesel exhaust exposure using diesel particulate matter (DPM) some exhaust gas measurements have been used as indicators of exposure. DPM is emphasized because it is a major component of diesel exhaust, is suspected to make a major contribution to the health hazard, and is measurable. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH STANDARDS Occupational exposure surveys of diesel exhaust frequently measure regulated pollutants, or pollutants that are suspected carcinogens, even if no permissible exposure limits (PELs) have been established. In the United States, various organizations recommend a range of allowable values for diesel exhaust gaseous constituents, including carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur dioxide (SO.), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitric oxide (NO), and formaldehyde (HCHO). "A 1986 report by the U.S. National Committee on Blomechanlcs (1) describes lung disease as a major national health problem. The report cites three areas that would benefit from a better understanding of the vibratory patterns of the lung. These areas are outlined below.1. In cases of respiratory distress, pressure driven artificial respirators are used. A new technique using high frequency respiration is quite promising, but the pressure distribution in the lung as a function of frequency is not yet known. At these frequencies of 1 to 60 Hz, the lung expands asynchronously (2) and a better understanding of these expansion nonunlformltles could provide valuable Information about the mechanics of high frequency ventilation.2. Listening to the sounds In the lung can yield valuable Information about the state of the lung. To improve the technique, a better understanding of how acoustic waves propagate through the lung is needed.3. The response of the lung as It Is subjected to acoustic excitation, dynamic loading or shock waves is not well understood. A better knowledge of these responees can lead to improved treatment for patients subjected to either explosive pressure waves or car crashes.4. Researchers are measuring the acoustic Impedance of the Iung to detect early states of dysfunction. Sneckenberger and Whitmoyer (3) have reported Impedances obtained at acoustic frequencies up to about 6000 Hz. However, It la not certain which parts of the lung are responding to the acoustic excitation.To Investigate the vibratory characteristics of the lung, excised rat lungs were excited via the trachea with acoustic waves at frequencies up to 6000 Hz. Thie paper describes an Instrumentation system, utlllzlng time-averaged holographic Interferometry, to detect and quantify the response of the lung surface to the acoustic excitation."

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (sec. 303 (b)) stipulates that no working section of the mine shall contain more than 0.5 percent carbon dioxide and no harmful quantities of other noxious or poisonous gases such as the oxides of nitrogen. The concentration of methane should at all times be maintained below one percent. A split of air returning from any working section shall contain no more than 1.5 percent of methane (sec. 303 (i) (2)) and air that has passed by an opening of any abandoned area shall not be used to ventilate any working place in the coal mine if such air contains more than 0.25 percent of methane (sec. 303 (j)). Methane concentration in the returns from the bleeder entries should not exceed 2.0 percent (sec. 303 (i) (3)), and no air that has passed through an opening which is inaccessible for examination shall be used to ventilate any active areas. While the air quantity requirements alone can easily be met, the governing condition in most mines is the dilution requirements for quality control. A sufficient quantity of air is required to render harmless and carry away noxious and respirable pollutants. In recent years, changes in coal extraction methods, rates of advance, location of available reserves, position of prominent methane sources and horizons, and geological sequences have contributed sig¬nificantly to alterations in rates, patterns and character of numerous methane emissions. Gas production of 10 to 15 million standard cubic feet per day is not uncommon from deep mines (Cervik, 1969). "A complete list of permissible mine equipment, tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines previous to January 1, 1947, was published as Information Circular 7432. 3/The present list is a supplement thereto that includes all of the equipment approved during the calendar year 1947.The items are numbered to indicate the consecutive order in which each type of machine or device was approved in its particular classification. Thus, Information Circular 7432 showed six air compressors on the active list; two additional compressors, Nos. 7 and 8 in this category, were approved during 1947.Items 2 and 7, unmounted loader and power unit, respectively, under Loading and Conveying Equipment, item 2, rubber-mounted mining machine and item 8, distribution box, appear in Information Circular 7432. They are repeated to show that approvals of these four equipments were extended to cover an additional voltage rating which requires material change in design.Equipment listed in these circulars is approved by the Bureau of Mines only when found upon inspection and test to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in schedules prepared on the basis of many years of experience in dealing with safety problems of the coal-mining industry. The use of such equipment in mines known to be gassy, as well as in those that may become so, is earnestly recommended in the interests of safety. This circular is published so that the industry may be kept informed as to the many types of machines, devices, and lamps that are available for reducing explosion and other hazards incidental to coal mining. The present paper, with Information Circular 7432, gives the complete list of permissible mine equipment that is available under the various classifications."

(being shipped as bailast in ocean freighters). Within the last 10 years it has become more economical to use local sands, and there has been a general shift from the Belgian sand. Deposits of purer sand were treated and used for 'some time: but the suprly became limited, and means were sought to beneficiate the more bountiful subpay-f impure beach sands. These sands are composed of, 50 percent feldspar and 50 percent quartz, with small amounts of iron- bearing minerals, The most objectionable impurities in these West coast sands are the oxides of iron and aluminum. The Del Monte (Calif.) beach sand contains about 0.13 percent FeqQg and about 11.0 percent Aig03 (the latter being furnished by the large amount of feldspar present.) For the manufacture of feldspar present.) For the manufacture of flint-glass containers the maximuni quantities of these two impurities permitted in the sand are 0.05 percent F20 and 6 to 8 percent A1203.. The Fe0g occurs in the sand as follows: Traces of iron-bearing minerais resistant to weathering, ferruginous clay stains on the sand grains, and iron minerais not visible and possibly in solid solution or as colloidal incisions in the grains of feidspar or quartz. A good part of the iron in the sand is present in the traces of iron-bearing minerals, biotite, ilmenite, garnet, monazite; and hornblende. Biotite is present in larger quantities than the others. Samples of quartz, were freed of iron-bearing minerais by the use of heavy liquid (sp.gr. 2.70), leached with boiling HCI and SnCl2. Under a microscope a few apparently clean quartz grains were selected, and Fe203 was determined spectrographically to be 0.03 percent. The technique is similar to that described by Gabriel and Slavin. 4/
