"INTRODUCTION The Treasure Hill mines, situated in Dry Canyon, Ophir mining district, Tooele County, Utah, together with several other properties in the district, examined were examined by Frank L. Wideman, an engineer, the Bureau of Mines, in September 1942.In April 1945, development drilling was started on the Treasure Hill mines, which are operated under lease from the Madison Mines Co. The project was continued in 1946 and terminated in 1947.While the Bureau of Mines project was in progress, the Morgan and Fullion tunnel workings were surveyed by Bureau engineers.ACKNOWKEDGEMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy, It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. A gradual decrease in injection rates commonly occurs as a water-flooding project becomes older. This decrease can be attributed to changes in reservoir conditions, such as swelling of clay minerals, fillup, or gradual plugging of the sand face. However, a rapid decrease in the rate of injection indicates abnormal behavior and is cause for alarm. Extreme plugging conditions can completely stop injections into a formation. Such behavior in wells was the main concern of the tests described in this report. An accepted method of alleviating this condition is by backflowing input wells - closing the supply lines to the wells and allowing the reservoir pressure to force water back into the wellbore and to the surface. If backflowing is not successful, a string of smaller diameter pipe sometimes is run inside the casing, and the sand face is flushed with a waterspray. More drastic treatment is to inject acid into the wellbore to dissolve extraneous matter, or even part of the reservoir material, in an attempt to restore the permeability of the sand immediately around the wellbore. Any of these procedures can he coordinated with bailing and swabbing of the well for cleanout purposes.

This paper, describing the concentrator practice of the United Verde Copper Co., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of HISTORY The United Verde concentrator was constructed in accordance with recommendations based on certain novel reasons which were quite different from those usually justifying the expenditure of such an amount. Concentrator operations started in March, 1927, although the metallurgical staff had considered for several years the eventual addition of a concentrator department.

Crystalline silica (quartz, cristobalite, and tridyrnite) is regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) because of its potential for causing debilitating but nonmalignant lung diseases. In 1987, the International Agency for Research Against Cancer (IARC) conducted a review of the health literature and concluded that crystalline silica was a probable human carcinogen. As a result of this finding, OSHA was required to regulate crystalline silica under its Hazard Communication Standard (HCS). The standard requires that all materials handled by OSHA-regulated facilities be labeled according to the requirements of RCS and that workers receive proper training on the handling of the material if the crystalline silica content equals or exceeds 0.1 weight percent (0.1 %). MSHA currently is considering enacting its own RCS. This will be similar to OSHA's RCS. If the standard is enacted, most mineral producers will have to determine the respirable monitor filter and bulk crystalline silica contents of their ores and products so that workers and/or customers will know whether they are in compliance with the 0.1% HCS and/or the OSHA permissible exposure level (PEL) of 50 µg for an 8-hour workday for respirable crystalline silica as determined from monitor samples. Two major concerns with the RCS are the widespread occurrence of crystalline silica in nature and the suitability of current technology for routinely determining crystalline silica concentrations at the 0.1 % RCS level. Most ores are extracted from silica-bearing deposits and it is a common constituent of rocks and soils. OSHA's RCS will have the greatest impact on the producers of crushed stone, diatomite, dimension stone, gravel, industrial sand, perlite, pumice, pyrophyllite, sand, and talc because these materials frequently are shipped directly from the mill to the customer. MSHA's RCS would affect nearly all mineral producers. Those producers that have crystalline silica present in concentrations near the 0.1 % cutoff point will have the most difficulty with the analysis. Crystalline silica can be quantified at the 0.1 % level by X-ray diffractometry in simple systems containing one, two, and possibly three minerals if (1) none of the accessory minerals has X-ray diffraction reflections that coincide or overlap with those of crystalline silica and (2) the standard has a particle size distribution and crystallinity similar to those of the sample. In some instances, it may not be possible to determine the crystalline silica content of a sample with any degree of certainty using the recommended regulatory protocol. In all cases, it is recommended that a qualified mineralogist identify the minerals in a sample prior to any regulatory analysis. Additionally, the uncertainty as to whether some silica polymorphs should be classified as crystalline or noncrystalline and the suitability of metastable high-temperature standards, such as cristobalite and tridyrnite, for regulatory analysis at ambient temperatures should be addressed further. This overview is written both to highlight these problems and to serve as a guide for analysts, regulators, and industry personnel who are involved in the crystalline silica issue. It also covers some of the difficulties and/or shortcomings in quantifying crystalline silica, such as the ubiquitous mineral quartz, in the workplace.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents an overview of the use of three unique numerical modeling methods to analyze cutter roof problems in underground coal mines. Cutter roof failures are common in coal mines where the immediate roof is comprised of thin laminae exposed to highly biaxial tectonic stress fields. The predominant mechanism for failure is assumed to be excessive shear stress at the entry corners exceeding the shear strength of the rock. Early work in this area utilized the finite-element method and then the boundary-element method to analyze several cutter roof control measures. Various stress control measures were simulated to estimate their respective effects on reducing the high levels of shear stress at the entry corners. More recent studies made use of the discrete-element method. This method was used to take the analyses beyond the elastic continuum limits to simulate the propagation of a shear fracture and subsequent redistribution of stress within the mine roof. A simple roof bolt model was implemented to show the benefits of bolting to increase the resistance to shearing and separation along horizontal bedding planes and maintain roof stability.

The explosive-anchored rockbolt was field tested in six mines where rock conditions varied from incompetent shale or mudstone through fairly soft sand-stone to firm sandy shales. The purpose of the testing was to document, under a wide variety of conditions and in comparison to other rockbolt anchors, the quality of the anchorage produced by the explosive-anchored bolt. In addition, the length, strength, and design of the explosive charge necessary to produce positive anchorage up to the yield strength of the weakest component of the bolt were determined. A l4-inch length beaded explosive charge was found to be suitable, in general, in relatively weak strata, and the length can be reduced in more competent strata. Of the 127 explosive?-anchored bolts tested, 118 bolts produced an evaluated anchorage in excess of 17,000 pounds. Only 4 of 43 expansion-shell bolts and 4 of 14 wedge bolts produced anchorage this good. In preliminary tests, properly coupled explosive-anchored bolts did not ignite an explosive gas mixture. Some minor phases included in the investigation were as follows: (1) effect of explosive-anchored rockbolt on surrounding rock; (2) effect of time on anchored bolts based on torque tests; (3) effect of submersion in water on rockbolt anchorage; (4) pull tests to higher loads; and (5) ignition tests.

Because of an urgent national need for manganese, the deposits in the Little Florida Mountains of Lune County N. Mex., were visited by O.H. Metzger, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, on June 12 and 13, 1940, accompanied on the second day by S. G. Lasky, a geologist of the Federal Geological Survey. After this preliminary examination, it was recommended that exploratory work be done by the Bureau of Mines on several properties in the district. An exploratory project of trenching, sampling, and core drilling was started by the Bureau of Mines in September 1940 and completed in May 1941.2/ Work was done on three properties - the Luna mine, the American group of claims, and the Manganese Valley mine. The Little Florida manganese district is situated on the eastern slope of the Little Florida Mountains about 2 miles south of U. S. Highway 80-90, 12 to 14 miles southeast of Deming, Luna County, N. Mex. The principal claims comprise the Luna Manganese, American, and Manganese Valley groups.

"I. IntroductionThe alveolar surface of the lung is covered by two populations of pneumocytes, type I and type II epithelium. The type I cell, which accounts for most of the alveolar surface area and provides a highly specialized barrier for gas exchange (Rannels et al., 1991), is poorly understood. Although approaches to type I cell purification have been discussed, they have not been applied widely because of the lack of phenotypic markers to monitor isolation procedures (Dobbs et al., 1988; Danto et al., 1992). In contrast, the type II cell has been studied extensively, largely because of the development of reliable procedures for its isolation and primary culture. Investigations based on the use of purified populations of cultured type II cells have provided convincing evidence to support a role for the pneumocytes both in the maintenance of normal lung function and in the response of the lung to injury (for review, see Rannels and Rannels, 1989).While type II cells can be isolated by a variety of approaches, the protocols used most commonly are modifications of the gradient method of Dobbs and Mason (1979) or of the panning method of Dobbs et al. (1986). Purification of the cells based on density gradient centrifugation is reliable and consistent, with yields of 30 to 40 X 106 type II cells per rat of 230 g body weight. Isolation procedures applied to a minimum of three to four rats provide the best results, as lower cell yields are common with the use of fewer animals. The investigations recorded in this bulletin were conducted by the Pacific Coke & Coal Co. in cooperation with the United States Bureau of Mines and the University of Washington. They cover one phase of a comprehensive investigation to determine whether coals from an extensive, undeveloped area of Pierce County, Wash., can be used in the manufacture of coke for the iron blast furnace. The completed investigation had three parts: (1) A geological survey of the coal property, (2) washing and crushing tests of the coals, and (3) coking and by-product tests. The geological survey, which was not conducted in cooperation with the Bureau of Mines and the University of Washington, included systematic tracing of the coal beds by test holes throughout the property, except some portions covered by an impenetrable layer of glacial drift. By this means all of the beds were correlated, their thickness and general character were determined, and tonnage estimates were made. Only such parts of the survey results as are necessary to a full explanation of the investigations described herein are included in this bulletin.

In the first Report of Investigations of the present series?(No. 4562) the usual course of progress ill reducing the minerals of low-grade ores to their valuable metallic components had been noted as advancing along two lines to concentrate a usually diminishing percentage of these minerals to a smaller bulk of richer product, and then to smelt the smaller bulk more cheaply per pound of metal produced. Fundamental properties of lead compounds made it difficult to treat much richer lead products than are treated at present in several steps of conventional lead smelting, unless ?marked modifications were made. No limits to the richness of the feed itself' were set by the ore (Scotch) hearth; on the contrary, the richer the feed, the better the results given by the hearth. The natural field of operation of the hearth, as determined by the ores available, was seen to lie in the Central United States, with their lead concentrates containing negligible quantities of precious metals and. with few ores of such metals available for use as fluxes. It was noted) however, that even in its chosen field, the Scotch hearth, or "ore" hearths developed from them, was not always used; the usual smelting practice was followed, at times, of sintering followed by blast-furnace smelting for even rich ores.

"INTRODUCTION The fuel requirements for industrial and domestic consumers in New England, in normal times, are supplied almost entirely by fuel oil, anthracite, and bituminous coal. A shortage of these fuels occurred during the war. This shortage was caused by (1) The diversion of oil to military uses; (2) the use of railroad and boat facilities that ordinarily would transport coal for the transportation of war materiel; (3) the inability of coal mines to apply the increased demand for coal which resulted from the conversion from oil to coal by domestic and industrial consumers; and (4) the increased demand of war industries for coal. Because of this critical fuel situation, an investiga¬tion was made of possible sources of fuel nearer to points of consumption in New England. Meta-anthracite, which is a satisfactory fuel for some purposes, had been mined in Massachusetts and Rhode Island many years ago. However, the introduction of freer-burning anthracite and bituminous coal into New England markets resulted in the abandonment of these mines.The coal mined in the vicinity of Portsmouth on Aquidneck Island, Newport County, R. I., had been used successfully for smelting copper ore and for fuel. It is reported that this coal is less graphitic than the material mined at Cranston near Providence, R. I. The coal is meta-anthracite and does not burn freely. However, improved equipment for burning coal has been developed, and if minable reserves of meta-anthracite should be found, methods of burning it probably could be devised.The purpose of this investigation was to determine sources of additional fuel. Since meta-anthracite mined at Portsmouth had been used with some success, an investigation was undertaken to determine the characteristics and continuity of the beds in this area."

"The study described in this paper, on the reactions in an iron blast furnace, is part of the investigation being conducted by the Bureau of Mines on combustion of coke and the reduction of iron oxides in the blast furnace. Previous study of the combustion zone of the iron blast furnace, by means of a series of as samples taken through the tuyeres across the hearths of 13 blast furnaces, showed that the combustion of the coke in the blast-furnace hearth is complete at a distance of 32 to 40 inches from the nose of the tuyere, measured horizontally toward the center of the furnace. The results of this previous work are sum¬marized in the curves shown in figure 1, where it will be noted that practically all of the oxygen disappears at a distance of approximately 30 inches from the nose of the tuyere.In order to determine the height at which oxygen is found in a vertical direction above the tuyeres - it had been suggested that the combustion zone turned upward near the tuyere and to obtain comparisons with the samples taken at the Bureau of Mines experimental6 (5-ton) blast-furnace at Minneapolis, the Bureau extended the gas sampling on a commercial furnace to a number of planes between the tuyere level and the stock line. The sampling was conducted on a 300-ton furnace, making foundry iron, operated by the Central Iron and Coal Co., at Holt, Ala. The furnace was smelting Southern red and brown ores and nodules from pyrite sinter. Figure 3 is a vertical section of the furnace showing the six planes sampled."

A process for recovering manganese from open-hearth steel-plant slags was investigated. The proposed method of accomplishing this is indicated by the flow diagram in figure 1. Mixtures of open-hearth, steel-plant flush slags and limestone, so proportioned as to have molar [CaO -3P205] ratios of approximately 2, were fired at approximately 2,400° F. in an oxidizing atmosphere and then cooled slowly. This treatment produced a clinker consisting principally of two solid phases comprised of (1) various combinations of the oxides of manganese, iron, aluminum, and magnesium, probably in spinel complexes, and (2) a dicalcium silicate phase, which contains the phosphorus. Reduction of these clinkers with hydrogen or with gaseous mixtures containing CO, CH4, and other hydrocarbons at about 1,300° F. formed manganous oxide as well as varying amounts of ferrous oxide and iron. Carbon monoxide and mixtures of hydrogen and carbon monoxide effectively reduced the clinkers but also gave higher proportions of soluble iron when the manganese was extracted from the reduced clinkers by leaching at about 80° F. with ammonium carbonate solutions containing 26 to 28 percent ammonia and 15 to 26 percent carbon dioxide. It is believed that the manganese is in solution as an ammonia-manganese complex. Concentrations of about 90 grams of manganese per liter were obtained by batch countercurrent procedures. By distilling 50 percent of the ammonia, the ammonia-manganese complex was decomposed, and approximately 90 percent of the manganese was precipitated as the carbonate with the simultaneous precipitation of 15 to 30 percent of the iron, the larger amounts of iron precipitating in the continuous tests. The manganese-iron ratio in the product could be increased either by recycling more manganese from the distillation to the extraction or by aerating the liquor to purge it of iron before, rather than after, the distillation step. Calcination of the pelletized manganese carbonate in an oxidizing stmosphere at 2,000° F. or above gave a final product, Mn304, resistant to crushing and apparently possessing the other physical properties essential in a ferromanganese blast-furnace feed.

An investigation was begun by the Bureau of Mines in 1948 to determine the preparation characteristics of American coals. Results of the investigation were planned to be reported on a county basis and, from the data developed, to determine: (a) Which coals, either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation, are suitable chemically under present standards for producing metallurgical coke. (b) Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced. (c) Which coals cannot be considered potential sources of metallurgical coke, regardless of preparation. This report is one in a county series and describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Logan County, W. Va. According to present-day standards for metallurgical coal, many believe that the sulfur content of the coal should not exceed 1.25 percent? Coal with more than this amount has been used for making metallurgical coke, especially when blended with coal containing less sulfur. In this series of reports 1.25 percent sulfur is used as a gage to determine whether or not a coal will be suited for metallurgical coke.

"IntroductionThe purpose of this investigation was to study the characteristics of the high-acid electrolytic manganese cell with the idea of fitting it into one of the flow sheets being worked out by the Metallurgical Division of the Bureau of Mines for the recovery of manganese from low-grade domestic ores.In construction, the high-acid cell 3/ differs from the low-acid type in that the cathode and anode compartments are separated by a diaphragm of relatively low porosity, such as alundum. This is necessary because in the high-acid cell the two electrolytes are circulated separately. The anolyte is 15 to 30 percent H2SO4. The catholyte consists of a solution of ammonium sulfate and manganese sulfate with a OH of 4 to 3. The only mixing of electrolytes is that resulting from flow through the diaphragms. In the low-acid cell the two electrolytes are not circulated separately and do not differ so widely in hydrogen-ion concentration. Hence, the canvas diaphragm is sufficient.During operation of the cell, manganese is deposited on the cathode, and sulfuric acid is produced in the anode compartments. Various other reactions take place in the cell. There is considerable decomposition of water; hydrogen is evolved at the cathode, and oxygen is liberated at the anode. When lead anodes are used, some hydrated oxides of manganese are formed at the anodes. The quantity of oxides formed is not as great as it is in the low-acid cell, because fewer Mn++ reach the vicinity of the anodes."

Zoning regulations concerning known aggregate sources are described, and information relating to projected needs for the urban area is furnished. History of growth is outlined not only for the local aggregate industry, but also for the entire urban area. Past conditions are pointed out and background material for future conditions is provided.

To help develop the basis for new fine-particle separation methods, the Bureau of Mines has investigated the use of cross-linked starches containing four chelating groups--carboxylate, iminodiacetate, dietha-nolamine, and xanthate--as flocculants for selected metal oxide and hydroxide mineral fines. It was found that those starches capable of interacting with the mineral surface by a chemisorpti,on mechanism (as indicated by zeta potential measurements) produced the highest recover-ies and'grades of the metal oxide or hydroxide when flocculated from a binary mixture with quartz. The effects of pH, dispersing agent, stirring rate, stirring time, and starch dosage on selective flocculation were studied for binary mixtures of hematite and chromite with quartz. Floc strength becomes important in achieving maximum recoveries by mechanical postflocculation separations.

To determine in what part and to what extent creep or movement exists in an installed rock-bolt anchor and the effect of the creep or bleedoff on the tension load on a rock bolt, as well as the effect of normal mining activity on the rock-bolt load and anchor, the Bureau of Mines conducted tests in the laboratory and in two mines using four types of expansion-shell anchors, the wedge bolt, and in one mine, explosive-anchored rock bolts. Specially mounted heavy-duty springs, calibrated to obtain load readings from spring movement, were installed on the test bolts to prevent a drastic reduction in tension load caused by slipping or seating of the anchor. A dial gage, reading to 0.0001 inch, measured movement of the anchor shell against the rock and seating of the anchor wedge plug in the shell. While all bolts had electrical resistance strain gages for load reading, only readings from the laboratory tests were used because those from the field tests were erratic. The tests revealed that most load loss resulting from static loading is due to the slippage and seating of the serrations on the anchor shell into the drill-hole wall. Dynamic loading, primarily from sudden shocks from nearby blasting, and possibly from ground movement or mining activity, will cause the anchor wedge plug to seat in the anchor shell.

Ground control problems are an important factor affecting safety, production, and efficiency in underground coal mines. A major portion of ground control problems encountered in underground coal mines can be attributed to geologic features in the strata surrounding the extracted coal seam. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has compiled information from numerous sources on the geological features that contribute to ground control problems in underground coal mines. The compilation includes (1) sedimentary features such as paleochannels, crevasse splays, clastic dikes, mold-and-cast structures, concretions, and lithologic factors, and (2) structural features such as folds, fractures, joints, cleat, and faults. The compiled information will aid in identifying the features, predicting their occurrence in advance of mining, and controlling or minimizing roof failure when these features are encountered in an underground coal mine.

In undermined urban areas, new solutions to subsidence problems are being sought. The Bureau of Mines is investigating a hydraulic backfilling technique whereby fill material is pumped as a slurry through a closed system and widely distributed in inaccessible mine workings from a single borehole. A full-scale demonstration was completed in 1973 in Scranton, Pa., which is underlain by abandoned anthracite mines in several coalbeds superposed one above another. A 30-acre residential area was stabilized by injecting about 450,000 cubic yards of crushed mine refuse into two coalbeds through five injection boreholes. Nearly 200,000 cubic yards was injected through one borehole from which the material moved into the mine workings on all sides; the injected material reached a maximum lateral distance of 640 feet and filled mine openings from floor to roof. In the gravity-feed method formerly used to backfill inaccessible mine workings, quantities of fill injected per borehole averaged about 300 cubic yards. The gravity-feed method required many closely spaced injection holes and provided incomplete filling. The new method, designed for inundated mines, proved successful also in mine workings about mine-water pool level. Distribution of slurry through a buried pipeline minimized disturbance to the community.
