"Peru does not produce ammonium nitrate; nevertheless it is a large consumer of both, porous prill (PP) and high-density (HD) varieties. Explosives cost is an important preoccupation in Peru, due tofluctuations of the imported ANFO grade Ammonium Nitrate (AN). The use of Gasified Emulsion (GE)-manufactured with much cheaper HDAN- has become an alternative to reduce such costs. However, some problems were reported in the application of pure GE, including explosive percolation in highly fractured rock and lack of sensitivity by the effect of hydrostatic pressure in very deep holes. It was, hence, proposed to have an explosive based on GE too, but more robust and capable to keep the shape of the explosive column into the blast hole, by minimizing the leakage into the cracks. This could be achieved by adding limited amounts of lower priced HDAN, at the same time of providing gas pressure benefits. Other alternative is to add a low-density material, such as polystyrene prills, into the GE, although it reduces the explosive energy. The chemical gassing controls the density of GE, thus it can be obtained a wide range of densities."

Explosives used for blasting operations in civil engineering works, like construction of piping systems under roads, of pools, of houses and buildings can generate large volumes of carbon monoxide (CO). Carbon monoxide can represent between 1 to 3% of the gases produced by usual explosives. The production of 10 to 24 1 of CO by kg of explosives blasted is theoretically anticipated. CO is a gas that has no characteristic colour, smell or taste. It can migrate in the fractured rock of the blasted areas on fair distances, and then infiltrate in closed spaces like sewage systems, manholes, but also in basements of houses. In Quebec, in the last 10 years, 7 people were poisoned by CO in their houses to the point that they had to be treated in hyperbaric chambers. In the USA, many accidents have occurred and one worker died in a manhole. From the review of intoxication cases, the distance of migration of CO may reach 55 m if a conduit is present underground. Underground conduits broken by blast, tilling around underground conduits in road or house trenches, or fractured rock created by blasts between houses or between a house and a road, are the different pathways identified in the Quebec incidents. Field tests were performed at sites close to CO intoxication locations in order to evaluate the behaviour of CO in fractured rock following blasting operations. From these tests, the following conclusions may be drawn. The structural geology of the rock formation (schistosity, family of joints, fractures) plays a role in the direction and extent of gas migration in fractures generated when rock is blasted with explosives. The confinement of the rock can affect the quantity of gas migrating in the fractured rock. Significant concentrations of CO may persist in the fractured rock even 7 days after a blast. Advection is the initial mechanism of CO migration in fractured rock generated by the blasts or naturally occurring before the blast. The distance of migration with this mechanism is short (5 to 8 m). In trenches of muck (equivalent to tills under roads) the distance of CO migration by advection is 12 to 20 m. In the 2 to 3 days following the blasts, further CO migration up to 15 m is made by diffusion in the induced fractures, or up to 30 m in the trenches. To minimise CO production and migration in the fractured rock during blasting, special procedures can be applied by the blasting contractors: (1) do the complete excavation of the overburden before drilling and put mats for each blast; (2) do the complete excavation of the muck after each blast; (3) the last blasting should be the one for the private services entrance of the house and the excavation of the muck should begin at the junction between the road trench and the services entrance trench. Another technique consists in the pumping of interstitial air in the muck with a vacuum truck immediately after each blast.

There is not just one ANFO: ANFO explosive behaviour depends significantly on the blasting conditions and on its physico-chemical characteristics. For instance, ANFO effficiency increases whereas AN porosity is higher and consequently loading density of the explosive is less. This can be argued against generally admitted ideas. Therefore, the efficiency of industrial explosives related to ANFO (for example "relative weight strength" or "relative bulk strength") is a tool that must be used with caution.

A large portion of these damages occurs to public roads and highways, forests, agricultural resources, and other property from flooding caused by beaver dams. The United States Department of agriculture, Animal Plant Health Inspection Service, Wildlife Services (WS) program is a non-regulatory Federal program directed by Congress to assist resource owners with managing damage caused by wildlife.

In an effort to reduce the cost of bulk explosives, Vigo Coal Company found that the addition of coal mined at their Friendsville Mine, not only reduced explosive costs, but also appeared to actually enhance blasting performance. The Friendsville Coal lies at the base of the Mattoon geologic formation within the Mcleansboro Group of the Missourian Series of the Pennsylvanian Geologic System in Southern Illinois. Vigo Coal Company commissioned VIBRONICS, INC., an independent blasting consulting company to quantify actual blasting performance. Insitu sonic velocity testing of overburden was conducted to determine the P-wave velocity of the sandstone present at Vigo’s Cypress Creek Mine, where the initial testing was conducted. Numerous VOD (velocity of detonation) recordings were obtained for varying blends of ANFO/Coal (now named Carbo*Prill). Cast blast percentages were determined for both Carbo*Prill and non coal blended bulk explosive blasts. The VOD of the coal blended product was intentionally reduced so as to more closely match the P-wave velocity of the sandstone overburden. Explosive blends containing as much as 40-50 percent coal were tested. Explosive blends containing greater than 30 percent coal, have been used in Cypress Creek Mine overburden production blasts. The coal blends appear to produce better fragmentation and yield excellent cast blast performance. Safer mining conditions were also observed. Flyrock potential was reduced. The blasts produced less back break, producing a safer highwall. Stripping dozer and shovel production rose during the testing period and equipment repair costs were lowered due to an increase in overburden fragmentation. Blasting vibrations were reduced, in part due to the lowered detonation velocity of the ANFO/Coal mixture. The Friendsville Coal Seam appears to contain inherent chemical and physical properties that enhance blasting performance. The use of Carbo*Prill has been approved by MSHA, BATF, the State of Illinois, and the State of Indiana. This paper will provide details concerning testing procedures, blast performance analysis, recommendations and conclusions for using this alternative blasting mixture.

This paper examines the effect of prill size consistency, internal particle density, and oil absorbency on Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil (ANFO)-emulsion blends. By analyzing these physical properties of prill and the nature of the blending process, a mathematical model has been developed to theoretically predict blend densities. Calculated densities can now be compared to actual field densities to give an operator a basis for comparing various manufacturers' emulsions and Ammonium Nitrate (AN) during bid solicitation. The lowest priced emulsion and/or AN may not be the most economical, due to the impact of specific physical characteristics. These factors dictate the blending mechanics and resulting density yields for various mixes. The research was driven from observed 'field' mixing relationships and data. Ultimately, such a model can be an effective tool in evaluating blends from a cost and performance basis.

Some view quantitative risk assessment (QRA) as difficult to understand and complicated to use. They are comfortable with the proven reliability of quantity distance (QD) and question the benefits of applying QRA principles to explosive safety. In response to such questions, a review of the history of the American Table of Distances (ATD) provides insight to the strengths and weaknesses of the concepts behind QD tables. Additionally, a closer look at QRA features that are available today will reveal stunning capabilities and improved user friendliness not available previously. This paper looks at the early days of explosive safety, the use and limitations of QD, the meaning of risk in the context of QRA and discusses recent developments that knock down barriers previously hindering acceptance of QRA among regulatory agencies.

In this paper, the ground vibrations induced by blasting for stripping work at Sekkoy Open Cast Coal Mine belonging to TKI Yenikoy Lignite Mine (YLI) are investigated and the procedures for monitoring and control of ground vibrations are presented. Ground vibration measurements are conducted in the direction of Turkish Electricity Authorities’ Yenikoy Establishment and social facilities because of the complaints and annoyance arising from this site. Forty ground vibration records are taken in this direction and the vibrations are measured in transverse, vertical, longitudinal components together with peak vector sum. After then the scaled distance relationship is determined at 95% confidence value. Further, Fast Fourier Transform analyses are carried out to determine dominant frequencies for both ground and the structures and amplification factors. When the records taken at four different structures together with the ground are evaluated, it is observed that one of the apartment buildings is amplified the amplitude of longitudinal component 4.3 times. The maximum allowable amount of explosive that can be fired safely at this mine is calculated and recommended on. In the determination of safe amount, 95% confidence line, USBM RI8507 and OSMRE criteria, the dominant frequencies of both ground and the structure, amplification factor and the human response are taken into account.

Most studies of crack response have focused on opening and closing of a crack in the plane of the wall in which the crack occurs. Crack movement also occurs perpendicular or normal to the plane of the wall. This paper will examine and compare the in-plane and out-of-plane (normal) response of cracks in two different residences near limestone quarries. In two locations, sensors that measure in-plane and normal displacement were installed side-by-side on the same crack, allowing direct comparison of the two modes of response. In a third location, a perpendicular pair of displacement sensors was installed in a corner of a room to observe the bidirectional response of the structure at a corner. Both long-term and dynamic data were recorded with the same sensors; temperature, humidity, and air over pressures were also recorded to compare blast and weather effects. Measurements show that ratios of out of plane to in plane response to dynamic events can vary. However, the ratios of out of plane (normal) response to vibratory events to that of climatological change is still as small as the ratio for in plane crack responses.

Explosive casting of overburden is defined as the use of explosives in blasting to move overburden to a spoil pile without rehandling. Studies of the economic feasibility of the method, and the formulation of a design hypothesis involving rock properties, and blasthole geometry are presented. These studies indicate that if technical feasibility can be demonstrated to increase surface coal production, considerable economic advantage would accrue to coal mine operators.

"The economy profits from the rock excavated in mines and quarries and the excavations required for the construction of roads and buildings. However such excavations are achieved by blasting withexplosives, and explosions create fly rock and vibrations which in some cases may throw rock far intoinhabited regions and may vibrate buildings excessively in these regions. Society, however, no longeraccepts that their quality of life be disturbed by the risks of fly rock or the perturbation of vibrations.Thus it is important to know how to design blasts that do not cause excessive fly rock or vibrations, and to understand why sometimes a blast does create excessive vibration or fly rock. An article presented at the 2015 ISEE (reference 1) explains how unacceptable vibrations can be avoided, while the present article explains why dangerous fly rock occurs and how it can be avoided. The article shows by rigorous calculations with the blast simulator Blaspa that long range fly rock can be due to short collar or short burden, but mainly it explains how inadequate blasting that allows the floor to rise can cause even further reaching fly rock, a situation not usually recognized by most blasters."

In the underground environment, characterisation of a rock mass during the mining cycle becomes increasingly difficult due to a lack of rock mass exposure for measurement or observation. In most cases rock mass characterisation occurs prior to mining by inspection and logging of exploration drill core, or prior to mass excavation through drive mapping for geological and geotechnical data. Characterisation strategies, if applied during the mining cycle, can reveal near-field anisotropies that may affect the behaviour of the rock mass with respect to excavation. These methods can aid in understanding the performance of stopes based on geometry, in-stope extraction sequence, and stress modelling. One such method of characterisation involves the use of production blast vibration monitoring and analysis as indicators of rock mass anisotropy through travel-time tomography.

Using the Scaled Distance (SD) and the vector sum Peak Particle Velocity (PPVvs) from a single delay, preferably single blasthole, in a shot, a number is derived which has shown itself to be consistently related to blasting efficiency, as experienced by one of the authors of this paper over the last thirty years. The numbers derived by this process range in value over one order of magnitude more or less. This variation, a function of distance, weight of explosive in the delay, blasthole diameter, blast design, powder factor and the geological environment, can be consistently related to two of these factors, powder factor and distance. In actual use the measured "BED" representing good blasting results should not vary by more than + 33 to + 50 percent of the estimated "BED" in non calibrated cases, and + 10 to 20 percent where previous experience is available. Relatively high "BED" values are indicative of poor blasting results while relatively low "BED" values may be precursors of poor blasting results in a shot. There are many variables in the geological environment which can affect the "BED". A case study is presented from a surface coal mining operation in eastern Canada. This case study tries to evaluate the reasons for the variability in "BED" values derived from multi-hole shots. A problem in using "Signature Vibrations" from a single-hole shot to predict blasting vibrations from multiple-hole production shots is identified.

Concrete is a common construction material used throughout the world, and with increasing demand of fast-track construction, blasting and concrete casting are occurring simultaneously at many sites where rock is being excavated for concrete placement. However, there has been significant disagreement in the construction industry as to what intensity of shock vibrations green, or fresh concrete can tolerate. Peak particle velocities are often arbitrarily chosen, or are simply based on materials such as plaster and drywall that have been more thoroughly studied in relation to damage. Previous research on green concrete has used the concrete’s static strength subjected to shockwaves at different ages as the primary damage criteria. In addition, the static strength tests have been based on curing time. However, changes in temperature or humidity can dramatically alter the hydration rate, which affects strength development of different cements. To account for temperature changes and humidity the concept of concrete maturity is commonly used and allows the researcher to see where the concrete was in terms of hydration progress. In general, static testing determines the failure stress that the concrete’s macrostructure can handle, and often failure occurs in the natural materials first or along large defects in casting techniques. Dynamic testing or high strain rate testing, on the other hand, loads materials at such a high rate that larger defects do not have time to react and instead the microstructure is more highly stressed leading to higher strength and stiffness values. This is known as the material’s strain rate sensitivity. Since dynamic testing better tests the microstructural strength, it is believed that it may provide a better way to assess damage to green concrete. Testing includes both static and dynamic compression as well as static and dynamic splitting tensile strength to assess whether damaged has occurred to the concrete. No significant statistical evidence was discovered that damage to the concrete occurred at five different “green” maturities from peak resultant velocities ranging from 10.66 in/s (271mm/s) to 4.40 in/s (112 mm/s) with average intensity of 6.7 in/s (170mm/s).

Ammonium Nitrate (AN) is most commonly encountered as either a prilled solid or a highly concentrated aqueous solution, with or without organic ( e.g amine) nitrates. Under certain conditions of fire exposure involving prilled or solid AN, the molten state can be formed. The shock sensitivity of the molten material at temperatures greater than 220 Celsius has been found to be much higher than that of the prilled or solid form. Molten AN can be a precursor to events leading up to explosion of a bulk prill storage pile as a result of fire exposure. The explosion hazards presented by molten AN are a function of two factors; 1) its shock sensitivity and the deflagration to detonation ( DDT ) properties of the molten material, and: 2) the ability of large masses of unfueled prilled AN to be initiated and detonate. This paper presents the results of tests designed to determine the shock initiation and DDT properties of the solid ( prilled ) and molten AN.

[Executive Director’s note: According to 17th edition of the ISEE Blasters Handbook in its section on trench blasting, “...consideration must be given to the proper venting of gases generated from the blasting. Should those gases spread laterally rather than vent directly to the surface, the gases may travel underground and finally vent well outside of the planned area. Such events may be caused by the strata, soil conditions or root systems, or existing and/or abandoned utilities or other man-made structures. In the worst situation, gases resulting from the detonation such as CO2, CO, and/or NOx may travel through the strata and find their way into basements of nearby homes or businesses. The IME has recommendations on how to minimize this potential problem. Some of the points include removing the overburden and digging the rock immediately after the shot, and drilling vent holes periodically between the ditch and adjacent homes.” The Board of Directors of the International Society of Explosives Engineers has expressed its concern that blasters be made aware of the issue of migration of carbon monoxide resulting from blasting operations. Description of Project: Tamar Group’s civil division was awarded a contract to implode the Sun Hotel, an abandoned 14-story building located along Bat Yam’s coastline, roughly two kilometers south of Tel Aviv, Israel. On Nov. 6, 2012, Tamar Group’s experts positioned explosives in strategic locations of the building, targeting its central pillars, which then caused the building to collapse within seconds. Tamar Group used a relatively small amount of explosives in order to generate a well-controlled blast. This is the largest scale demolition carried out in Israel to date.

In the March/April 2006 issue of the Journal, we published an ethical dilemma called “Blowing the Whistle.” We received many interesting responses to the article as requested. Some of the responses are printed here. We’ve also included “Blowing the Whistle” again in this issue as a refresher on page 37. Dear Editor, It is in my own personal belief that it would be extremely important if I were the blaster to take the following steps. 1. Hold an immediate emergency meeting with the contractor to convince them to stop work at this point.2. This meeting would need to be held with all powers that be in this construction company. This helps eliminate the hearsay (excluding the farmer). 3. Explain the entire situation to the contractors as it has been presented to the blaster by the farmer. 4. Recommend calling in an engineering or geological firm with the expertise to investigate this matter immediately, and take all immediate action based on findings. 5. Follow up with farmer allow him to speak, (a.k.a. vent) and assure him proper steps are being taken to come to resolve this matter. 6. Be a good listener, and communicator with the farmer while investigation is being conducted. 7. Should the contractor not want, or take any of these recommendations, the blaster himself and his company should question even working for this company ever again. This in itself would not be the class of people we would want to be associated with EVER.
