"Strain rate and temperature dependent deformation conditions are present during elevated temperature forming of aluminum and other metallic materials. While many constitutive laws have been proposed to represent such deformation conditions, a closer investigation often reveals their limited applicability in terms of fit to the experimental data, and interpolation within and extrapolation outside of the range of experimental stress-strain curves. This is often because material-specific primary deformation mechanisms of temperature-dependent strain and strain rate hardening are poorly captured. In the present work, the Voce-Kocks constitutive model based on mechanics of dislocations storage and annihilation has been found to be suitable for many metallic materials. The model was modified to include the effect of temperature dependent shear modulus. The modified model is then employed to represent the experimental data obtained from uniaxial tensile tests on AA7075-O sheet at elevated temperatures and strain rates. Also, hot gas bulging tests were conducted to verify the applicability of this model. Further, finite element simulation of the hot gas bulge test was performed by incorporating the model as a user material subroutine. Good general agreement was observed between the experimental and FE model predicted results. Some sources of discrepancy in the prediction are also discussed.INTRODUCTION There has been much interest in light-weighting of automobiles from automotive related industries to reduce overall carbon footprint and increase energy efficiency of the vehicles. Aluminum alloys, and especially the medium-strength 5xxx and 6xxx series alloys, have been the primary focus in the last 3 decades to reach the above environmental goals (Huo, Hou, Zhang, & Zhang, 2016) whereas aerospace industry has traditionally focused on high strength 7xxx series aluminum (Al-Zn-Mg-Cu) alloys for structural components (Deng, Yin, & Huang, 2011). Recently, there has been much interest in high strength 7xxx series aluminum as a replacement for heavier steel automotive structural parts such as A-pillar, B-pillar, side impact beams etc. (Harrison & Luckey, 2014). This is both interesting and challenging since the above aluminum structural parts will need to not only meet impact safety standards but also possess sufficient formability for manufacturing such complex parts. Since the formability of high strength 7xxx series materials is quite poor at room temperature, much interest has focused on improving both formability and final part strength via high rate hot stamping, in-die quenching, and subsequent artificial ageing process steps (Kumar & Ross, 2016)."

HPGRs have since introduced in the 1980s (Kellerwessel, 1993; Schönert, 1988), now become integral comminution units at several minerals processing plants around the world. Even though a lot of the initial issues concerning performance, availability and wear have been addressed and solved there are still phenomena and aspects which can be improved and understood further. Schönert and Sander (2002) presented experimental results and a mechanistic model including the internal force dynamics between the rollers and the compacted bed. They derived expressions for the pressure distribution involving most of the influencing terms and effects. However, in order to solve the differential equations several of the terms vanish by assumptions. The Schönert and Sander model reflects the experimental data in many aspects but the predicted shear force distinctly deviates from the experimental results at the angular position of the peak pressure level. This finding suggests that the particle to particle interaction and breakage process in the different zones seen in Figure 1 are complex and difficult to model using analytical models. A numerical modelling approach using DEM does not require the same amount of assumptions and simplifications of boundary conditions. Hence such modelling may provide further knowledge and vital understanding. In this paper the breakage process is simulated in order to investigate the shear slip behaviour and how it relates to different operating variables. A laboratory scale HPGR corresponding to the experimental setup used by Schönert (2002) have been modelled in EDEM (DEM-Solutions). The bonded particle model (BPM) is used for modelling quartz particles (Potyondy, 2004). The breakage model strength parameters are calibrated against interparticle breakage experiments in an Instron 400RD compression device. The contact model parameters are calibrated using calibration methods developed by Quist (2015). The floating roller dynamics are modelled using a spring-damper system. Results present insights regarding the interparticle slip behaviour as well as the frictional tangential force distribution on the rollers. The simulated roller pressure distribution shows good correspondence with previously reported findings in the literature.

"Mount Polley is an alkalic porphyry copper-gold deposit of Lower Jurassic age within the Quesnel terrane in south-central British Columbia. The silica-saturated Mount Polley intmsive complex is assumed to be coeval with volcanic rocks of similar composition in the Nicola Group in which it was emplaced. Other intmsions and some of the volcanic rocks in the Mount Polley area are silicaundersaturated and contain feldspathoids.The Mount Polley deposit is characterized by multiple intrusions that vary from diorite to crowded plagioclase porphyry to monzonite. Intmsion breccias are associated with some of the intmsive phases. Abundant hydrothermal breccias occur on the margins and above plagioclase porphyry intmsions. These breccias provide the main host for mineralization and are associated with the highest concentrations of copper and gold. The breccias are subdivided into four distinct types based on the dominant hydrothermal mineral in the matrix. Actinolite breccia is developed in an elongate zone within the core of the Central zone and grades laterally and vertically into biotite breccia to the southeast. Magnetite breccia is irregularly distributed and is relatively sparse throughout the deposit and albite breccia is dominant in the West zone. Pervasive and vein-related alteration correlates with the breccia types. The core of the hydrothermal system at Mount Polley is subdivided into three zones: actinolite, biotite and K-feldspar-albite. The margins of the core zone are overprinted by a discontinuous zone of calc-silicate minerals. This intermediate zone passes outward into propylitic alteration. Mineralization is most prominent within hydrothermal breccias and is generally present as disseminations, blebs within the matrix and abundant veins. Mineralization is associated with a chalcopyrite-magnetite-bornite assemblage in the core of the deposit passing out into magnetite-pyrite-chalcopyrite. Relatively constant copper to gold ratios suggest that both metals were precipitated under similar conditions.Hydrothermal breccias are genetically related to the emplacement of the crowded plagioclase porphyry melt. Crystallization of the melt was probably accompanied by volatile/aqueous exsolution, forming a water saturated carapace. Decompression of the chamber in response to magma withdrawal, fracture propagation and possible fault movement allowed hydrothermal brecciation to occur at the apex and margins of the intmsion. Alteration and mineralization appears to have been controlled by fluids migrating away from the plagioclase porphyry."

Weak metal prices, declining head grade, and increased operational costs are forcing many open pit mining companies to look to their balance sheets for significant cost reductions in order to remain competitive. Maintenance continues to represent a significant proportion of the total operating costs in the mining industry. Compared with the other major cost components of the mining process very little effort has gone into maintenance optimization. The potential payoff from maintenance optimization on the cash cost of the commodity is enormous. A large percentage of these costs are incurred in unscheduled maintenance events, which typically cause serious disruptions to the production process. These maintenance induced production losses can be a significant contributor to the overall operating costs. A structured proactive maintenance approach using the latest advances in technology can achieve dramatic cost reductions and productivity improvements. Remote condition monitoring systems are becoming increasingly commonplace and have the potential to identify problems prior to failure. Detection of equipment degradation prior to failure will enable repairs to be scheduled thereby reducing costs and interruptions to production. Remote condition monitoring technology has evolved rapidly in recent years, with a host of new tools becoming available to assist mine operators in improving their maintenance operations. These tools have capabilities such as: remote real-time vital signs and performance monitoring, alarm/event handling, trend analysis, and maintenance workflow management. When these monitoring tools are used in conjunction with a mine management system the vital signs data can be integrated and associated with maintenance history, predictive maintenance data, operational information, and geographical information. This integrated approach to the management of vital maintenance data will help shift the mobile equipment maintenance paradigm from reactive to proactive. This paper will introduce a proactive approach to the management of the maintenance process and the tools required to facilitate this process.

Empresa Nacional de Minería (ENAMI) is dedicated to the promotion of small and mid scale Chilean mining industry. Paipote, ENAMI Copper Smelter, processes a variety of mineral products as the result of this promotion. The mineral products characterize a wide variation of copper, iron, sulfur and precious metals content as well as the significant dispersion in the content of impurities, such as arsenic, antimony and bismuth. The Smelter Modernization Program, initiated in1997, introduced a series of technological and operational changes. The development of operational planning and control strategies was necessary to optimize the blending of a wide variety of concentrates and the control of metallurgical processes in order to ensure the stable operation, fulfillment of environmental regulations and the quality of produced copper anodes. A permanent optimization process carried out in the last decade led to the permanent increase of the smelting capacity and the production of anodes and sulfuric acid. Additionally, introduced improvements affected the smelter efficiency and metallurgical recovery, demonstrating the possibilities of the optimization of a small smelting facility reflected in good metallurgical and economic results. This paper presents the smelter evolution, introduced technological and process control changes as well as incorporated new reactors and equipment as a continuous process of optimization.

The size of rock fragments depends on the nature of the loading applied the strength of the minerals and the texture of the rock. Research in the literature demonstrates that there is a distinct difference in the rock fracturing process for static and cyclic loading. The tensile strength of brittle rocks is also one of the most significant parameters influencing the rock fracturing process and the propagation of micro-fractures on the crushing, blasting and cutting of rock. The Brazilian indirect tensile test, one of the methods approved by the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM), has been used to determine rock fracture behaviour under different cyclic loading modes. In this study, the dimensions of Brisbane Tuff specimens have been selected according to the method outlined by the ISRM. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of cyclic loading amplitude and frequency on the Fracture Process Zone (FPZ) at the micro-, meso- and macro-scales. The post-failure behaviour of the Brisbane Tuff specimens was obtained under cyclic loading with frequencies varied from 1 to 10 Hz. The amplitude was varied from 10% of Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) up to 80% UTS. Laboratory investigations of rock fragment size revealed that different loading frequencies and amplitudes produce different FPZ dimensions. Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) results demonstrated that the FPZ dimension is relatively sensitive to the frequency change. Fragment size analysis showed that the FPZ is a consequence of the initiation, propagation and coalescence of micro-fractures and depends on the nature of the loading. Laboratory evidence showed that the FPZ dimension, for the cyclic tests performed on Brisbane tuff, is ranged from 0.07 to 20 mm. The achievement of this study highlights a key finding in the understanding of fracture patterns and propagation models in the FPZ under cyclic loading, which is the dominate mechanical action in the oscillator disc cutter (ODC).

"The Lone Gull discovery of Urangesellschaft Canada Limited was made in 1974 as a result of extensive exploration activities for unconformity related uranium deposits in the Baker Lake area of the Northwest Territories. The structurally controlled mineralization is hosted in Aphebian metasediments and intrusive granitic stocks located approximately 2 km south of the unconformity between the Lower Proterozoic Aphebian and the Middle Proterozoic The/on Formation.The original discovery was made with a helicopter mounted radiometric system during systematic prospection over the unconformity. Diamond drilling was first carried out in 1977 and continued, with an interruption in 1981, to the present. A total of 25,500 metres and 199 holes have been drilled and outlined three ore zones. Preliminary geological reserves are estimated at some 16 million kgs. U30 8 at an average grade of approximately 0.4%.IntroductionUrangesellschaft initially entered exploration in Canada as a participant in joint ventures in 1968, and was incorporated in Canada in 1974 as Urangesellschaft Canada Limited. Subsequently, UG was among the first companies to apply exploration criteria developed from the Athabasca Basin, namely the Middle Proterozoic unconformity over Archean/ Aphebian basement, for selection of exploration targets in the geologically similar Thelon Basin.The Baker Lake area in the Keewatin District of the Northwest Territories was selected from the extensive Thelon Basin because it had the best accessibility (Fig. 1). The hamlet of Baker Lake located close to the geographical centre of Canada, is largely an Inuit settlement with a population of approximately 1,100 inhabitants. The distance from Baker Lake to the Lone Gull property is about 80 km. Baker Lake is connected to the tidewater of Hudson's Bay via Chesterfield inlet and is serviced by scheduled domestic flights several times weekly from Churchill, Manitoba, about 650 km to the south."

This paper explores Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) reporting practices within the mining industry. Specifically, this paper investigates how and why a mining company makes voluntary reporting decisions to include the GRI indicators that may be considered ?negative? to the company?s reputation. Due to the voluntary nature of the GRI Guidelines, a GRI adopter is not legally obligated to report every GRI indicator. Not surprisingly, empirical studies that evaluated the extent to which companies? sustainability reports meet the GRI requirements (Guenther, Hoppe, & Poser, 2006; Morhardt, Baird, & Freeman, 2002; Samy, Odemilin, & Bampton, 2010; Skouloudis, Evangelinos, & Kourmousis, 2009) have found that reporting practices of the companies under their studies are well below the standards reflected in the GRI Guidelines. An influential study by Clarkson et al (2008) uses economic-based and socio-political theories to explain variation in companies? environmental disclosure. They have found that, as predicted by economic-based theory, superior environmental performers disclosed more ?hard? (i.e. verifiable) environmental information. Inferior environmental performers are found to disclose more ?soft? (i.e., not easily verifiable) claims, which is consistent with socio-political theories (Clarkson, Li, Richardson, & Vasvari, 2008). However, this study and the existing literature do not adequately explain why a company may act in a way that cannot be explained by economic-based and socio-political theories, for example, why it would report some negative soft data that it is not required to report. This paper intends to address this literature gap. GRI reporting by a Canadian mining company, which I would like to call ?Company C?, is used as a case study for this paper. Company C was selected for this research because in addition to ?positive? information, its GRI-based sustainability report also includes both hard and soft ?negative? information such as grievances. Research methods include interviewing Company C?s employees who are involved in preparing GRI reports and reviewing documents prepared both by the company and by external parties. I find that integrative social contracts theory (ISCT) offers a valuable explanation to Company C?s reporting practices. From the ISCT perspective, Company C?s management appears to feel that the company is obligated under social contracts to be transparent. Therefore, Company C disclosed both positive and negative social and environmental information to the public because the management appeared to think that it is the right thing to do. At the same time, being transparent about the bad news gave the company an opportunity to conclude that it had done something to avoid future occurrence of the negative incidents. Therefore, I propose that, in addition to the economic and socio-political theories that are more often used in literature, insights from ISCT are instrumental in improving our understanding of the corporate non-financial reporting practices phenomenon.

At the concentration plant of the Gol-E-Gohar Iron Ore Company (Iran) three 9 m × 2.05 m AG mills (fixed speed) are used in parallel in a dry operation. The performance of AG mills has been lower than the target value indicated by an increase in the product size (P80) from 450 µm (target) to 515 µm and low power draw (50% of nominal). By simulation it was found that increasing the liner lifter face angle from 7 to 30o while keeping the original lifter height (i.e., 22.5 cm) could provide an appropriate charge trajectory. When the proposed liners installed in one of the AG mills, the throughput increased by 27%; when 5% (v/v) balls were added the throughput increased by 40%. The product size also decreased from 515 to 501 µm.

"Mass balances in secondary grinding are subject to critical constraints mainly because of the unknown load distribution from the SAG mills, the uncertainties in the hydrocyclone split estimations and the lack of flowmeters in the key streams. In this paper, a methodology to support mass balances based on the use of radioactive tracer is presented. This approach was successfully implemented in two secondary grinding circuits of Minera Los Pelambres, which operate with ball mills of 21’ x 33.5’. The method allowed the load distribution of the SAG product (secondary grinding feed) to be determined. This load distribution was used as an input in the mass balance data reconciliation.The effective residence times of solid tracers were obtained in the secondary grinding equipment, where irradiated solid was used as a tracer. The residence times were obtained from the parametric deconvolution between the input and output tracer signals. The model fitting was performed to reconstruct the normalized output tracer concentration. Effective residence times of solid tracers in the ball mills ranged from 1.9 min to 9.5 min. The use of radioactive tracer measurement in grinding circuits is a powerful tool to consolidate mass balance results as well as to characterize grinding mills.INTRODUCTIONGrinding is the last stage of the comminution circuits. At this stage, the ore particles are reduced in size by a combination of impact and abrasion, either dry or wet (Austin & Concha, 1994). The grinding equipment mostly used in industrial operations correspond to horizontal tumbling mills (Wills & Napier- Munn, 2006). Tumbling mills employ steel balls or rods as grinding media. Ball mills, which are a type of tumbling mills, use steel grinding media with greater surface area per mass unit than SAG (semiautogenous grinding) mills or rod mills (primary grinding). Hence, the ball mills are suitable to obtain the particle size required in the next separation stages (Napier-Munn et al., 1996; Wills & Napier-Munn, 2006)."

"1.1. WHAT ARE AGREEMENTS AND HOW ARE THEY FORMED?In order to have an agreement, at common law, there must be an offer, acceptance of that offer, and consideration passing between the parties. In addition, the material terms (i.e. the basics or substance) of the agreement must be discernible, preferably by means of documentation. Although these concepts may appear simple and straightforward, the law relating to them is voluminous and complex. Some brief comments are worthwhile.• Offer/acceptance: Both offer and acceptance should be in writing, but they need not be. The actions, conversations, and/or correspondence of the parties may constitute either or both of them. Notwithstanding, the local law or practice of a jurisdiction will impose some specific requirements for certain types of agreements. If these requirements are not met, the agreement may be unenforceable. For example, Ontario’s Mining Act requires transfers of unpatented mining claims to be evidenced in writing and recorded.1• Consideration: Consideration is usually thought of as being money, but it can be virtually anything, even “the premises” (i.e. the mutual covenants or promises contained in the agreement itself). In addition, if one party, relying upon the offer of another, does something to his detriment, then the doing of the act can be considered to be an acceptance of the offer and, under the legal concept of “detrimental reliance”, can also be consideration. Whether or not detrimental reliance exists will depend upon the circumstances of each case.2• Material terms: The requirement that the material terms of an agreement must be discernible does not mean that all of the terms of an agreement must be documented or even have been considered, just the basic or material ones. In addition, it will be up to a judge to decide what is material – not necessarily the parties. In order to establish the material terms, a Court may look at all relevant documentation and may hear oral evidence. It will resist “writing the agreement”"

In this study, deep cryogenic treatment was applied to A319 cast aluminum samples. Although the cryogenic treatment didn't have any significant effect on mechanical properties of the well degassed and fluxed samples, but the tensile strength of the samples containing a considerable amount of gas and shrinkage defects was improved surprisingly, This improvement was attributed to the strengthening of the a-aluminum matrix which slows down the propagation of the existing defects. There was no significant increase in the hardness after cryogenic treatment, The abrasion resistance of the alloy was improved after cryogenic treatment, by developing a homogeneous protector shield, composed of abrasive grains penetrated into the soft aluminum matrix and kept tight.

Core drilling is a fundamental process in the mineral exploration industry. As deep exploration in hard rocks is accelerated due to the depletion of near ground mineral resources, deep-drilling operations need to reduce their reliance in operators experience and begin to implement new technologies in order to increase efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the overall process. Currently, lack of real-time information on the bit/rock interaction is a major problem. Therefore the mechanism behind the acoustic emission, which is a proven technique for remote monitoring, generation in mechanical rock cutting must be understood in order to provide real time information about the rock. This paper aims to identify the influence of mineral composition of granitic rocks on the acoustic emission (AE) during rock abrasivity test with a single contact tool and to evaluate the feasibility of AE as a means to infer Cerchar Abrasivity Index (CAI). Single contact tool will provide precise and accurate description of the source of AE. To provide constant grooving speed Cerchar apparatus was modified to monitor AE during rock/tool interaction. Tests on the modified Cerchar apparatus are carried out under the static load of 70N and cutting speed of 1 mm/s. A Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) is utilized to visualize the groove in the rock and to identify the mineral composition through Back-Scattered Electrons (BSE) reflected from the rock sample. Based on the microscope images, it was found that biotite shows a larger groove area and plate-like fractures accompanied with burst-type AE signal, whereas plagioclase and quartz, which are characterized by similar hardness and BSE brightness, possess shattered-like fractures and more continuous-type AE signals. In addition, a-value of the Gutenberg-Richter scale has been found to well correlate with Cerchar Abrasivity Index (CAI).

"In this study, laboratory flow tests were conducted on 2-D artificial rock fracture network models containing a single intersection constituted by two inlet and two outlet branches. Three models with different intersecting angles of 60°, 90° and 120° were tested using both dye solution and distilled water. Constant flow rates were imposed on one inlet, and the flow patterns in the fracture intersections were captured by using a CCD camera. The test results were compared with the predictions made by numerical simulations that solved the Navier-Stokes equations. The results revealed that when Reynolds number (Re) is as low as less than 1, the intersecting angle has negligible influence on the flow rate of each branch and the flow patterns within a fracture intersection. As the interesting angle ? and Re (e.g., from 10 to 200) change, the normalized flow rates of different outlet branches change significantly, due to the inertial effect of fluid flow. These changes could be represented by a series of mathematical expressions involving Re and ?, which could be applied to fracture network models to improve their prediction accuracy on hydraulic properties (e.g., permeability and breakthrough curves of particles) of rock masses. INTRODUCTIONCoupled stress, flow, heat and mass transport are the corner stone subjects for many geoscience and geo-engineering disciplines, such as geological disposal of radioactive waste and geothermal energy exploitation. Many outstanding issues need to be investigated to enhance the knowledge on these subjects, and specifically more in-depth research in testing and modeling of the fluid flow in fractured rock masses is needed. In recent years, discrete fracture network (DFN) models have been extensively used to study the fluid flow and mass transport behaviors of fractured rock masses (e.g., Min et al., 2004; Zhao et al., 2011). In these models, each fracture is usually represented by a parallel-plate model, in which fluid flow exactly follows the cubic law. Therefore, comparative flow rate in each outlet branch of an intersection in these models only depends on its aperture. In reality, due to the surface roughness of fractures, the magnitude of mechanical aperture is usually larger than that of the hydraulic aperture of each fracture (Li et al., 2008; Xiong et al., 2011), and abundant flow patterns could exist in an intersection, influenced by its geometry, varying with changing Reynolds number (Re) (Kosakoswski & Berkowitz, 1999). Recent studies have also revealed that different mixing patterns might exist at a fracture intersection, bounded between streamline routing model and complete mixing model, that determine the final distribution of solutes in fractured rock masses (Johnson and Brown, 2001; Park et al., 2001). Numerical simulation has been the principal method adopted in previous studies, and the studies conducting flow tests on intersected fractures are less reported (Wilson & Witherspoon, 1976; Johnson and Brown, 2001). In this study, laboratory flow tests and numerical simulations by solving the Navier-Stokes equations were conducted on 2-D models containing a single intersection constituted by two inlet and two outlet branches, intersected at different angles. The main objective is to study the influence of intersecting angle on the flow behavior of the intersected fractures and the variations of flow patterns and fluid redistribution in each model along with the changes of the Re and the intersecting angle ?. The influence of surface roughness was not considered."

The fatigue crack growth behavior of magnesium single crystal has been investigated, CT (compact tension) type specimens with different notch orientations were prepared. In the case of notch plane and direction are (1-210) and [10-10], fatigue crack propagates parallel to notch, From TEM observation, it is found that pyramial slips occures at the crack tip. When notch is normal to basal plane, a fatigue crack propagates [0001] and parallel to basal plane depending on stress intensity factor range, In the case of notch parallel to basal plane, a fatigue crack propagates through straight route with some {10-12} twin, Fatigue crack growth rate, da/dN of A- and B- specimen is lower than F-specimen with crack parallel to basal plane.

This paper describes results of an investigation of fracture during tube expansion of 5052 and 5754 aluminum seam-welded tubes to optimize the forming of aluminum tubes during hydroforming. The tubes were produced in laboratory by press forming of tubular blanks and pilot-scale high frequency induction welding. The effect of property mismatch between the weld and base metal has been investigated. The material work-hardening was obtained by roll forming of sheet blanks in the 0-temper and H32 temper condition. The results showed that a significant work-hardening can be present in aluminum tube without causing weld fracture during tube expansion. The work-hardening increases the yield-strength mismatch between base metal and weld. Annealing reduces the hardness of base metal leading to more uniform deformation during tube expansion. As a result the occurrence of weld fracture is reduced. The study showed significant deformation of the welds during tube expansion. Weld thinning can be as large as parent-material thinning before fracture. To avoid fracture at the weld joint, good formability and high yield strength of the weld is needed. FEM simulation showed that minimizing the width of the weld joint can reduce thinning of the weld.

Katowice Coal Holding (KHW) is one of the largest coal companies in Europe. The company owns five coal mines with a daily output of around 60 000 tons of coal. In the Katowice city area, very good quality steam coal is extracted. The depth of mining varies between 400 and 1100 m and some of the mines rank amongst those most afflicted by methane in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, with the methane hazard having a significant impact on production and safety. ?Myslowice-Wesola? mine, being a part of the Katowice Coal Holding is characterized by high methane and rockburst hazards. The mine is equipped with a modern surface drainage pumping station. At the mentioned mine, longwall 514 was selected for analysis of its methane emission. The longwall was extracting the thick seam 501 (over 4 m), at a depth of over 900 m, which was subject to high stress and high gas concentration conditions. At a distance of about 50 m above, seam 501 is covered by thin seam 416. The strata between these two seams are sandstone and mudstone layers. In the floor of seam 501, with a thin shale interlayer, is located seam 510, which is the thickest (over 10m) and richest coal seam in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. In longwall 514 and it?s vicinity, methane was the dominant risk. For this longwall three methods of classical gas drainage were carried out. At first, drainage was undertaken using long boreholes from a cross-cut at level 665 m, located far from the production panel. Later, it was performed using typical boreholes drilled from the ventilation gallery (tail gate road). Finally, it was undertaken using a degassing drift executed in the upper coal seam 416. All of these headings, ie. cross-cut level 665 m, the ventilation road and conveyor road in seam 501 and the degassing drift in seam 416, were equipped with media for drilling and proper drainage pipelines. Due to the high rockburst hazard and some problems with caving, several kinds of de-stressing and torpedo blasts were carried out in both coal seams and roof rocks. The subsequent analysis and experiments allowed the establishment of some general rules for carrying out degassing operations effectively. The effectiveness of a degassing drift was demonstrated. In some instances, the system allowed more than 70% of the total methane released to be captured and fed into pipelines. The aforementioned blasts had a marginal impact on methane emissions and the efficiency of degassing methods. Cyclic drilling and regular switching of boreholes in phase with the mining progress and working face advance were shown to be essential.

The networks of interdependencies between elements in building projects, referred to as the project topology, are often complex and difficult for project teams to comprehend. It is hypothesized that a graphbased model of the project topology can be based on existing data in Building Information Models (BIM), facilitating the application of graph-theoretic algorithms to analyze this topology. The objective of this study is to propose an outline for the synthesis of BIM and graph theory. This synthesis is expected to contribute to the development of new tools for representing, managing and analyzing the design of building projects.

The quantity of data available and the rate at which we access such data are rapidly increasing. Electronic data capture systems, fleet management systems and a host of other technological advancements have created a constant stream of real-time, tactical data. However, are we taking advantage of this data? Are we converting data into useful information to aid in efficient decision-making? Mining operations are struggling with ?information overload?, finding it difficult to extract the benefits from vast stores of data. Without the necessary tools to facilitate a data filtering and information reporting process, most operations revert to old practises such as re-entering data into multiple spreadsheet reports. As a result, the ability to make effective use of data still eludes many mining operations. Some operations have taken audacious steps to rectify this situation. The De Beers Venetia mine in South Africa has implemented an integrated mining information technology solution that transforms their data into practical, usable information allowing staff and management to make decisions that improve efficiencies and reduce costs. In the absence of quantitative justification or ROI, De Beers took a risk in implementing change. Today, they are realising the benefits. This paper will unearth the information technology issues that surfaced during the Venetia implementation, then identify the benefits De Beers has obtained from deploying an integrated mining information technology solution at the Venetia mine.

"In recent years with increasing concerns about energy consumption in hydrometallurgical processing, there is an ongoing attempt to use Catalytic Titanium Anodes (CTAs) for copper electrowinning. For this work, anodes with IrO2 - Ta2O5 coatings were prepared in the laboratory with the same total coating loading but varying the number of layers by changing the speed of withdrawal in dip coating. A second set of CTAs were fabricated on niobium, Ti Grade 1, Ti Grade 7 and Ti Grade 36 metal substrates. All the anodes prepared in the laboratory were characterized using standard electrochemical techniques and subjected to accelerated life testing. It was found that the coating would not adhere to the niobium substrate, the grade of titanium had a minimal to no effect on the life of the anode, and it is observed that as the coating speed slows, there is an increase in the electrochemically active surface area of the coating which seems to directly contribute to an increase in the Tafel slope of the anodes. There was inconclusive evidence on the effect of coating speed on anode lifetime.INTRODUCTIONLarge scale hydrometallurgical extraction of copper has become widely practiced over the last 40+ years. The hydrometallurgical route entails leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning. With the increasing desire to process refractory sulphides like enargite and chalcopyrite through the hydrometallurgical route, use of hydro-processing of copper is expected to remain high.In conventional electrowinning, copper is deposited on the cathode and an inert anode is used for oxygen evolution. Presently, the most common anode material is rolled lead-calcium-tin and the cathode is 316L stainless steel (Robinson et al., 2013). This lead alloy is fairly inexpensive and is robust, providing lifetimes typically of 4+ years. The main drawbacks of lead alloys are their relatively high oxygen evolution overpotential, the need for cobalt in the electrolyte to reduce their corrosion, the contamination of cathode product by lead, and the generation of harzardous by-products (Hiskey, 1999)."
