Acid resistant brick linings are state of the art for anti-corrosion linings in tanks for high pressure acid leaching (HPAL) treatment. The design of these brick linings has to take into account the almost non-elastic behaviour of the brick lining inside a relatively highly elastic steel vessel. There must be tools and data available to determine for the steel vessels the thermal growth plus the pressure expansion and for the brick lining the linear thermal expansion and the chemical swell. Thermal shocks and pressure drops are not regular operating events but their negative influence on the lifetime of a brick lining has to be a part of the engineering study. Finite Element (FE) models as well as a lot of research and development on brick lining materials is the only way to find a path through the complex engineering work for pressure vessels.

The thermal recovery of bitumen reservoirs by steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) is often designed to maximize the operating pressure. In general, the benefits of higher operating pressures are higher steam temperatures that maximize the reduction of oil viscosity, potential permeability enhancement associated with lower effective stress and shear dilation, and a larger pressure window to allow flexible control of the producer. This is especially important for shallow reservoirs where the pressure window for injection and production is smaller. Higher operating pressure can reduce thermal efficiency (due to heat losses), but the other benefits usually compensate. The limitation of the maximum operating pressure is then based on maintaining caprock integrity. Thus, shear and tensile failure mechanisms must be quantified and managed. This paper presents a geomechanical analysis of caprock integrity for SAGD operation. Both analytical and numerical approaches are used to investigate the modes of caprock failure. Main factors in the analysis are the knowledge of the initial stress state and proper representation of the complexity of the geomaterials. Typical initial stress states for northern Alberta are presented showing the potential for low initial minimum total stress and elevated initial shear stress levels. The stress-strain behavior for the sand and caprock materials is discussed focusing on the potential for shear dilation in the sand and shear strength behavior in the caprock. Elasto-plastic constitutive models used to represent the sand and caprock are presented and compared using numerical analysis. The increase in pressure and temperature alter the stress state and disturb the soil matrix. This disturbance results in shear dilation of the sand matrix creating regions of enhanced permeability and porosity. Also, the transfer of stress and strain to the caprock causes dynamic stress changes and, therefore, dynamic behavior of shear and tensile failure conditions. Calculations are presented showing the stress paths associated with SAGD operations, suggesting better design of lab testing programs and the implications for shear dilation in the sand and shear failure in the caprock.

zThe operation of SAG mills is variable over time due to their continually changing liner shape, mass and subsequent load motion. However, this tends to be poorly accommodated in liner design and mill control, with only limited compensation made for this influence, usually in the first few weeks after a new liner is installed. With ever-increasing ore competency, increasing energy costs and decreasing ore grades, simplified design and operational approaches that compromise the achievable mill efficiency are no longer adequate. This paper presents a methodology that has been developed to measure and account for the changes in mill performance as the liner wears. This involves monitoring all liner profiles – in other words the three-dimensional liner shape - over the life of the liner, then conducting controlled surveys at different stages of the liner wear life, and correlating the mill performance to the liner profiles. The measured liner mass is modelled to provide an ongoing meaningful load mass measure that excludes the liner mass.

"The microstructures of AlSi10Mg foundry alloy in permanent mould (PM) and high pressure vacuum die (HPVD) castings were analyzed and compared. The as-cast microstructures of two castings mainly consisted of eutectic silicon particles, primary Mg2Si and Fe-rich intermetallic phases. The surface layer in HPVD castings, which has a unique feature and different structures, was carefully characterized. The dimension variation of microstructural phases along the cross section in PM samples is less than that in HPVD samples, although the size of microstructural phases in PM samples was much larger than that in HPVD samples. The mechanical properties of PM and HPVD samples were evaluated on as-cast and T6-treated conditions. The tensile properties of HPVD castings are remarkable better than those of PM castings on the as-cast condition. The T6 heat treatment greatly improves the tensile strength of PM castings while it has limited impact on the tensile strength of HPVD castings.INTRODUCTION The AlSi10Mg alloys are widely applied to the high pressure die casting (HPD) and high pressure vacuum die casting (HPVD). In the HPD process, the melt is injected into the die cavity under a high speed (30–50 m/s in the gate velocity for aluminum alloys), and solidified under a high pressure (up to 200 MPa in the cavity) and with a high cooling rate (up to ~103 Ks–1) (Gourlay, Laukli & Dahle, 2007; Ji, Wang, Watson & Fan, 2013). This results in a unique microstructure feature that is different to other casting processes under gravity. One major concern in HPD castings is porosity due to trapped air in the cavity (Ji et al., 2013), which seriously restricts the application of a heat treatment on the improvement of mechanical prosperities because of the formation of blisters on casting surfaces. For the process improvement, the high pressure vacuum die casting was developed in 1980s (Uchida, 2009). In this process, the melt is injected into the die cavity under reduced pressure (vacuum), which greatly reduces gas porosity in castings due to effectively avoiding the trapped air. Consequently, HPVD castings are heat-treatable without the formation of blisters on castings surface during heat treatment. The HPVD process has been widely applied to produce high quality structural castings in recent years attributed to reliable vacuum system development (Uchida, 2009). However, the microstructure features of HPVD castings are not systemically characterized yet."

"This research work forms part of an assessment to complement the feasibility of implementing high pressure sonic injection into relatively small (2.25 m I.D by 3.66 m I.L) Peirce-Smith converters (PSC) used at Lonmin Plc. Work has been carried out to characterize the fluid dynamics of three-phase (air, matte and slag) fluid flow in these converters using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. The investigation has been done to study the flow pattern of the three phase system at high air pressure injection achieving sonic velocity at the tuyere exit into the converter. The 2-D and 3-D simulations of the three phase system were carried out using the volume of fluid (VOF) and realizable k -e turbulence models to account for the multiphase and turbulence nature of the flow, respectively. These models were implemented using the commercial CFD numerical code FLUENT. A detailed study of the flow pattern has been presented in the form of contour plots and the results obtained are useful for understanding plume extension and velocity distribution, shear wall stress distribution, and phase distribution characteristics in the system. The results provide a basis for further development of sonic injection technology into relatively small industrial Peirce-Smith converters with the ultimate objective of achieving lower energy consumption, improved process efficiency and increased throughput of the converting process. INTRODUCTIONPeirce-Smith converters (PSC) have been used in copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) making smelters for more than a century for the purpose of removing iron (Fe) and sulphur (S) chemically associated with copper-nickel mattes through exothermic oxidation reactions. This process is commonly referred to as conversion. In principle, conversion is a submerged injection process, where typically air (or oxygen enriched air), at subsonic velocity (typically < 150 m/s), is laterally blown into liquid matte (Cu-Ni-Fe-S system). Oxygen preferentially reacts with Fe and S to produce iron oxide (FeO), which is slagged off, and sulphur dioxide (SO2), which reports to the process off gas."

To contribute highly efficient and environmentally conscious copper smelting process, several topics in chemistry of the continuous converting were discussed. Through the reviewing the authors&apos; thermodynamic simulations, it is recognized that small amount and low copper content of the coexisting slag is preferable. Some discussions were added to the Takeda&apos;s diagram for Cu20-FeOx-CaO ferrite slag, and the activity curves of the constituents were derived. Thermodynamic calculations were carried out on the copper contents of the slag during the blister copper formation. The dissolution of copper in slag decrease somewhat with increasing temperature, but the effects of increasing S02 pressure and decreasing %S in copper are considerable to increase in copper content of the slag. The optimum oxygen enrichment in the supplied air, and regulation of the oxidation degree for the blister copper are important in practice. The gypsum phase separation in the calcium ferrite slag was also evaluated thermodynamically, and concluded that decreasing temperature, increasing CaO content or S02 pressure, and extensive oxidation of the blister copper tend to separate CaS04.

To investigate the effect of adding Ti to a Ni-Cr-Fe powder metallurgy alloy, a thermodynamic software package was used to predict the phase transformations that occurred during thermal processing. Specifically, the effect of adding 3w/o Ti to a 6w/o Al modified ternary Ni-Cr-Fe alloy (the quaternary) was simulated and the phase transformations that might occur in the material on sintering were obtained using the thermodynamic modeling tool. These predictions were subsequently compared with experimental results obtained by X-ray diffraction and metallography. For comparison, selected compacts were prepared containing only the ternary + 3w/o Ti (no Al). Based upon compressibility curves, the optimum pressure for producing the new Ti compacts was 500 MPa vs 600 MPa for the quaternary composition with Ti. In each case, hardness of the base alloy was enhanced by the Ti addition whereas the residual porosity remained relatively constant at about 19%. Finally, although SEM/EDS failed to confirm the presence of Ti in the gamma prime intermetallic, XRD spectra showed a shift in lattice parameter on addition of Ti, suggesting that the intermetallic was of the form Ni3(Al,Ti).

"The microstructure of Al-10Si-0.3Mg-0.5Mn alloy with 0.27% Zr and 0.19% V addition was quantitatively analysed and compared to the base material. The addition of Zr and V in the AlSi10Mg alloy exhibit a beneficial effect on the Si modification, resulting in the reduction of the size of eutectic Si particles on both as-cast and T6 conditions. The quantitative image analysis results show that the Zr and V addition and T6 treatment can reduce the size of the intermetallic phases. In addition, the presence of Zr and V is favour to the partial dissolution of the intermetallic phases during the T6 treatment. Different heat treatment procedures were tested to optimize treatment parameters. The mechanical properties of the alloys were evaluated using hardness measurements and tensile tests. The results show that the addition of Zr and V can remarkably improve the mechanical properties on as-cast and T6-treated conditions. The correlation between the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloys is discussed.INTRODUCTION Al-Si-Mg foundry alloys have been widely used in automotive and aerospace industries due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, heat-treatable capability and excellent castability. The alloying elements such as Cu, Mn, Fe are traditionally added into Al-Si-Mg alloys to improve their mechanical properties (Mohamed, Samuel, Samuel & Doty, 2009). In recent years, the attention has been paid to the effect of the transition elements such as Zr, V, Ti, etc, as minor alloying additives, on the properties of aluminum alloys (Elhadari, Patel, Chen, & Kasprzak, 2011; Kasprzak, Amirkhiz & Niewczas, 2014; Shaha, Czerwinski, Kasprzak, Friedman & Chen, 2015; Shaha, Czerwinski, Kasprzak & Chen, 2014; Mahmudi, Sepehrband, Ghasemi & 2006; Meng, Cui, Zhao & Zuo, 2013). Kasprzak et al., (2014) and Shaha et al., (2015) reported that additions of Zr, V, and Ti in Al-Si-Cu-Mg cast alloys can improve the alloy mechanical properties at high temperature by forming stable intermetallics and precipitates on as-cast and heat treatment conditions. On the other hand, the mechanical properties of near-eutectic and eutectic Al–Si cast alloys depend not only on the chemical composition but also, even more importantly, on microstructural features such as the morphology and size of eutectic silicon and intermetallic particles, which are present on both as-cast and heat treatment conditions (Mohamed et al., 2009). However, there is rather limited information on the effect of Zr and V on the microstructure features and mechanical properties of near-eutectic Al-Si-Mg cast alloys."

Most geologists have felt the need of a longer base than is ordinarily available when using a Brunton compass or other convenient instrument for taking strikes and dips in the field. To overcome this difficulty a lath or stick with straight parallel sides is frequently used. This accessory adds to the accuracy of the work, but it is a decidedly inconvenient one for the geologist to carry, especially if he be heavily loaded or is travelling on horse-back or through thick brush on foot. The writer has abandoned its use in favour of a sturdy two-foot carpenter&apos;s rule. The rule preferred is manufactured by J. Rabone and Sons, Birmingham, England. It is provided with a good level-bubble set in one of the limbs, and a scale, of the protractor type, graduated to five degrees through 180 degrees, attached to the main joint at the middle of the rule. (See Figure 1). For an instrument of its kind it is very accurate, and, in addition to the uses mentioned below, it &apos;is a handy thing to have around any camp. It is frequently used when plotting roughly in the field and for a protractor when one is not available. When not in use it may readily be carried in the top of the high-boot or legging. Ordinary strikes are measured as illustrated in Figure 1, the compass being held against the rule, which is in a horizontal position. Dips may be measured in a corresponding way by holding the Brunton compass against the extended rule, which is thus used merely as a straight edge. It is usually much more convenient, however, to ? use the rule only for this purpose, in which case one foot of the length rests as a straight-edge against the rock surface. This adaption is shown in Figure 2.

THE bituminous sand of northern Alberta has already an extensive literature, and most of the reports dealing with the subject are still available (see Selected Bibliography at end of paper). A phenomenon so striking and, as regards its extent, so unique, as the deposit in the vicinity of McMurray settlement could not fail to attract the notice of the early explorers, and we find references to it as far back as the latter part of the eighteenth century. However, scarcely a thought had been bestowed upon the possible economic value of minerals in the the remote northern parts of Canada before the second decade of the present century, and practically no detailed mapping had been done north of the town of Athabaska. The late Wm. Ogilvie made a track survey of Athabaska river in 1884, and surveys of certain lines-including the 23rd base line-had been completed by 1911. Between this base line and lake Athabaska, nothing had been attempted. Actually, no definite information at all was available regarding the character and extent of the bituminous sand when, in the earl y summer of 1913, a reconnaissance party set out from Athabaska for McMurray. At that period, the journey was made in summer by scow or canoe. No telegraph line had been laid, and a casual mail service by canoe or dog team once in three months formed the only means of communication with the outside world. The investigation has begun by the Mines Branch was continued during several subsequent years. The sand deposits were studied and sampled, the bi rumen was extracted from the sand and studied chemically and physically, and the economic significance of the deposit was given exhaustive study.

Introduction Before beginning to write this paper, I decided that I should first find suitable definitions of the words Sample and Sampling. The dictionary gives: "Sample.-A portion indicative of the whole"; and according to Baillie (1), sampling is "That process whereby a representative and comparatively small portion of material is selected from a large bulk, and preserved under such conditions as shall prevent contamination or avoidable alteration, with a view to the formation of valid conclusions regarding the suitability of the bulk for specified purposes". These comprehensive definitions are alike in substance, and indicate that unless a truly representative portion is taken, it is not a sample. Ore &apos;as mined&apos; generally varies a good deal in composition, and, in crushing, segregation takes place. Some of the minerals present, due to differences in hardness and friability, break into smaller pieces than others, and, on reaching the bin, the coarse particles roll away, leaving the fines behind. The result of this segregation is generally quite noticeable on the conveyor feeding the mill, especially when the bin is nearly empty and the crushing plant shut down. Should the sampling period synchronize with either the coarse or the fines, the sample obviously would not be representative. I agree that this is rather far fetched, but I maintain that such a condition is possible. Assuming that a representative sample may be procured from the feed conveyor, the method of cutting it down for assay has considerable influence in maintaining the original condition of the sample. The finer the material is ground after each cut, the more uniform the sample will remain. To illustrate this point, let us take a quantity of fine sand and add, say, three grains of rice to represent metallic particles. We may mix this sample by any of the known methods, then cut it into four equal portions. It is obvious that at least one of the portions will be without a rice grain. But let us grind the three grains of rice into flour and proceed as before. Now there will be a much greater chance of including some of the rice in each portion.

In geomechanics, conducting uniaxial or triaxial compression tests require samples to be prepared to a certain length-to-diameter ratio. This ratio is typically defined as 2:1 (length to diameter) and is accepted as a common standard for all materials on which mechanical properties testing is performed. Variations in sample length can cause changes in measured strength properties across multiple material types, such as cement, rock, or soil. Within the oil and gas industry, it is not uncommon to receive samples for technical services work that are slightly under or exactly the length requirement before surface grinding and sample preparation. Many of these samples are discarded from uniaxial and triaxial compression tests and used in another manner; therefore, it is necessary to study the length-to-diameter ratio in efforts to understand the limits and validity of testing samples that are slightly out of the 2:1 ratio. This paper discusses uniaxial compression tests performed using Berea sandstone and a standard cement mixture of 2.54-cm diameter to study changes in rock strength and properties. Compressive strength for each lengthto- diameter ratio over a range of 0.5:1 to 2.2:1 was measured. The investigation was extended to study near-end effects, where the sample length is near, but not exactly twice the diameter. It was discovered that the cement samples conformed reasonably well to the suggested ASTM correction factors. The sandstone did not conform to the correction factors and further analysis is required to develop a correction factor unique to the material. Near end effects, in both the cement and Berea, were found to increase compressive strengths, especially when the L/D of the samples was increased slightly over a 2:1 L/D.

Calcium, magnesium, bromide and iodide extraction from formation waters for use as industrial minerals has occurred in several countries, but not yet in Canada. Potential commercial brine fields exist in th e Upper Devonian Beaverhill Lake Formation of so uthern Alberta, and the Middle Devonian Elk Point Subgroup of north-central Alberta, f rom which calcium, magnesium and bromide are potential products. Iodide contents in fo rmation waters f rom the Upper Cretaceous Belly River Formation and the Lower Cretaceous Viking and Bow Island fo rmations in central and southern Alberta are at the lower range limit of commercial iodide-bearing formation waters elsewhere in the world. Available information is insufficient 10 outline potentially commercial areas in Alberta, but such info rmation can be most easily obtained f rom test borings for shallow natural gas. Lithium is not now produced commercially f rom formation waters but its content should be monitored in view of f uture increased demand for this metal.

THE Marmoraton mine is located a mile southeast of Marmora, a village in Hastings county, Ontario, 130 miles east from Toronto and 143 miles west of Ottawa. Highway No. 14 from Belleville intersects Highway No. 7 at Marmora and the branch line of the Canadian National railway between Trenton and Bancroft passes through the property just east of the open pit. HISTORY AND GEOLOGY The Marmora orebody appears as the whorls of a thumb print on the aeromagnetic survey map released by the Ontario Department of Min.es early in 1950, the survey of the district having been made in 1948 and 1949, under the joint auspices of the Department of Mines and the Geological Survey of Canada. The &apos;anomaly&apos; appeared to have interesting possibilities, so Bethlehem representatives carried out a ground survey and began drilling the property in June, 1950. A total of 40 holes, aggregating 37,000 feet, were drilled to delineate the ore-body. The Marmora orebody is a re-placement of Precambrian limesto.ne with zones or bands of magnetite interlaid with metamorpl1ic rocks and cut by later intrusives. The ore and associated Precambrian rocks are overlain by 100 to 150 feet of flat-lying Palaeozoic limestone. It is a low-grade deposit averaging 33 per cent iron and requires concentration to raise it to 65 per cent iron grade.

"Investment casting offers many advantages for the near net shape production of complex geometries, however, molten titanium reacts with most of the refractories used in investment casting shelling systems, which leads to the formation of an oxygen contaminated surface layer. This layer, called alpha case, is 0.1 to 0.6 millimeters in thickness according to the casting section size and must be removed either by mechanical or chemical milling processes. Alpha case removal processes affect casting tolerances and may contaminate the part intended for medical applications (e.g. embedding of abrasive grit media in the alloy). A shelling system based on an yttria prime slurry has been developed and was found to almost suppress the mold metal reaction. Yttria is an expensive refractory, but slurry life was found acceptable for small castings using a closed container and flow coating process instead of conventional pattern dipping. Alpha case depth has been determined for Ti6Al4V by metallographic techniques and microhardness measurements on different step block casting cross sections. Alumina and yttria second prime stuccos were evaluated in this study. The shelling system minimizes finishing operations in the production of casting for medical applications.INTRODUCTIONTitanium investment castings have been in the commercial market since the beginning of the titanium era in the mid 50’s. Investment casting is a cost effective way to produce complex parts for medical, aerospace and chemical processes applications. Investment casting of titanium is difficult due to the high reactivity of titanium with air and refractories used for shell mold building especially for the face coat. Melting is done under vacuum and no shelling system has been proven effective to suppress the mold-metal reaction yet. The main issue with the mold-metal reaction is the formation of an oxygen enriched zone at the surface of the castings named alpha case (Frueh et al., 1997; Kim, 2002; Saha, 1986). The alpha case is brittle, reduce the fatigue life in service of the parts and must be removed by chemical milling.For industrial purposes, calcia partially stabilized zirconia based slurries have become widely used in titanium investment casting for primary coats due to a combination of limited metal shell reaction. Calcia stabilized zirconia slurries have an acceptable shelf life and offer an interesting production window. Our experience shows that a resulting alpha case depth is 280 micrometers for a casting section of 6.35 mm in thickness is typical with such a shelling system (Morin, 2013)."

THE Greenhill mine of West Canadian Collieries, Limited, is situated at Blairmore, Alberta, and produces 2,500 tons per day of bituminous coal. On Monday, October 25th, 1943, smoke was discovered by a party of firebosses on their regular weekly inspection of air-ways. Probably the fire had been smouldering for several days but, as it had started on the outcrop at the top of an old raise filled with dirt, only a small quantity of smoke could filter through, and the plume of mist that crowns the fan at that season had prevented the fan-man from noticing it. This raise is only about 200 feet from the fan, and is 70 feet long between the fan-drift and the outcrop. It was impossible to prove the origin of the fire, as it had probably started several days before it was discovered, but it is possible that a careless smoker may have thrown a match into the opening at the outcrop, and that the old, dry timber had caught fire. The airways are in No. 2 seam, a bituminous seam 18 to 25 feet thick surmounted by shales and sandstones. Only 45 feet vertically above it is No. 1 seam, 12 feet thick, overlain by a strong conglomerate. In that vicinity, No. 1 seam had been worked out about ten years ago and the strata between the two seams are undoubtedly fissured. The pitch of both seams is 43 degrees.

"On the west coast of Cape Breton Island four coal basins have been identified, varying in age and extending from Port Hood northeasterly to Chimney Corner. Those of Chimney Corner - St. Rose in the north and Port Hood in the south belong to the Pennsylvanian Riversdale Group while lying between them are the coal basins of Mabou and Inverness belonging to the younger Pictou Group. Almost all of the coal basins are submarine and coal mining was carried out on all basins at various times. The seams in all basins dip steeply seaward at angles from 10 to 20 degrees but were found to flatten seaward. The coal is ranked as a high volatile C bituminous coal. Ash and sulphur contents are high compared with Sydney coal and the coal has a tendency to spontaneous combustion when stored in large quantities.Of the four basins, the most significant is that of Mabou. At Mabou recent seismic and drilling investigations have indicated that although a sizable reserve of coal may be found offshore the structural problems, particularly faults, and the poor quality of the coal encountered will make it a resource of the future, if at all. Inferred resources have been calculated at 150 million tonnes in four seams over a 10 km2 area and extending 3 km from shore. The quality of the Mabou coals varies with ash, ranging from 5 to 25 per cent and sulphur up to 6 per cent. Calorific value ranges from 25.3 Mj I kg to 31. 7 Mj I kg. The Port Hood and St. Rose -Chimney Corner fields (Fig. 1) contain 16 million and 3 million tonnes respectively, but the Inverness basin is considered to have been depleted. The active mine in this area is the Evans Mine at St. Rose that is currently producing between 30 -50,000 tonnes a year from proven reserves of approximately 3 million tonnes."

Today Li-ion batteries are considered as one of the most attractive available energy storage solutions. However in order to overcome environmental, legislative and economic issues, the management of used batteries has to be considered and mainly the recycling. The present paper deals with the recycling of used Li-ion batteries and the recovery of high value metals from active materials of electrodes. Lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (NCA) and lithium manganese nickel magnesium oxide (LMNM) cathodes, which contain most of valuable elements typically used in the composition of active materials for Li-ion batteries are investigated by a hydrometallurgy route. The process is divided into two steps: the materials leaching and the elements recovery by a selective chemical separation. Some experimental parameters (acid nature, concentration, time and temperature) are studied to determine the most efficient conditions of dissolution. Then, the valuable elements such as nickel, cobalt and manganese are selectively recovered with a high efficiency close to 100 % and with a high purity by precipitation. By this study, an adaptable hydrometallurgy process can be defined according to the composition of Li-ion batteries to recycle.
