"The potash beds in the Saskatchewan portion of the Williston Basin occur in the upper portion of the Prairie Evaporite formation of the Devonian Elk Point Group. They represent the late stage of a major evaporitic cycle. Two other evaporitic cycles are known in overlying beds, but these apparently never reached the stage of potash salt deposition. The basin in which salt deposition took place extended from the northwestern corner of Alberta southeastward across Saskatchewan into Manitoba, North Dakota and Montana. Deposition of potash salts was apparently restricted to the southeastern portion of the evaporite basin. On a regional basis, five major stratigraphie divisions of the potash-bearing strata have been made. Locally, several of these units may be divided into correlatable sub-units. The potash-bearing strata are separated and overlain by predominantly halite layers of varying thickness. Cross sections show the regional correlation of the potash-rich zones, and maps show the present distribution of the individual potash-bearing zones and the areas of richer development for each zone. The maps tend to substantiate the interpretation of considerable subsurface solution of salt and potash beds."

The performance of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells depends on catalyst layer composition and structure. Experimental observations reveal that state-of-the-art catalyst layers consist of microporous agglomerates of carbon-supported catalyst sites bound together by polymer electrolyte. In between the agglomerates are macropores which provide pathways for the transport of gaseous reactants. In this work, three-dimensional, multicomponent and multiphase transport computations are performed using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code (FLUENTTM) with a new PEM fuel cell module, which has been further improved by taking into account the detailed composition and structure of the catalyst layers using a multiple thin-film agglomerate model. In this model, it is assumed that thin films of polymer electrolyte and liquid water surround the catalyst sites. The results of CFD computations show that transport limitations associated with the thin film of polymer electrolyte and the presence of liquid water in the catalyst and gas diffusion layers have substantial negative effects on PEM fuel cell performance. Also, the results of computations with variable distributions for a given precious metal loading show that, in general, uniform catalyst loading provides the best fuel cell performance.

Stope performance and geotechnical information at Xstrata Zinc George Fisher Lead-Zinc-Silver mining operations have been analysed in detail since the beginning in October 2003. This work has been included in a joint dilution study between Xstrata Zinc and the University of Saskatchewan. This paper presents an analysis of site geotechnical data and stope reconciliation that led to major changes in stope design, a reduction in dilution, and a significant increase in mining efficiencies. Detailed geotechnical data collection for a mine site or particular stoping area represents a large amount of information which is time consuming to review. However, it is this data that can make a significant difference in rock mass behaviour understanding. Simplification and averaging of conditions into zones of similarity, called structural domains, are common approaches for managing large amounts of data. There is a tendency to average rock mass properties to obtain inputs for numerical modelling and empirical design tools. This approach may be misleading if the inhomogeneity of the rock mass is contributing to the failure mode. This paper summarizes a novel approach for rock mass characterisation and stope design in a bedded sedimentary rock mass.

F OR many years, only one grade of structural steel has been used in volume in Canada. Its characteristics have not been altered appreciably and its long use speaks well for its performance. This standard grade of structural steel may be bought and specified as C.S.A. G40.4 steel or the American equivalent, A.S.T.M. A7. The principal limitations and requirements of this specification are shown in Table I. Within the last five years there has been a growing awareness among the steel producers and steel fabricators that economic forces are at work which make desirable the availability of new and better grades of structural steel. Competition from other materials has increased. The use of concrete bridges and pre-stressed concrete beams is a prime example. New sources of steel from outside the country have become a threat to the Canadian industry and its high cost-price structure. The limestone reef reservoir at Swan Hills consists essentially of a "buildup" of successively smaller atoll-like layers. Precipitation of calcium carbonate within the lagoonal area of each layer essentially kept pace with growth of the outer organic lattice. Within the reef mass, six de-positional environments characterized by specific suites of fossils (or fossil fragments) and associated limestone textures are recognized as follows: ( 1) Aerated moderately agitated water of normal marine salinity (widespread shelf or submerged reef-built platform). Thamnopora-type corals, Amphipora, "pancake" stroma-toporoids, crinoids, articulate bra-chiopods, rare rugose cup corals, and ostracods occurs in light gray-buff skeletal microgranular limestone of low permeability. (2) Semi-stagnant quiet water of normal marine salinity (leeward side of reef). Crinoids, articulate brachio-pods, rare thamnopora-type corals, Amphipora, pancake and bulbous stromatoporoids, rugose cup corals, ostracods and gastropods occur in impermeable dark brown argillaceous skeletal calcilutite with thin black bituminous shale beds and rare dark chert nodules.

In April 2005, Umicore Copper de-merged from Umicore Group and created a new independent Copper company called Cumerio. As a separate company, Cumerio is a major European copper smelter and refinery and a leading producer of copper products such as wire rod, billets, cakes and specialty rod with a total production capacity of copper products in excess of 500,000 tpy with production plants in Belgium, Italy and Bulgaria. The Pirdop Smelter is the only state-of the-art smelter in South East Europe and it makes Pirdop the natural hub for the copper industry in the region. In order to be competitive in the international market the main challenges facing Cumerio are to maintain its low cost structure and to achieve higher production volumes while reducing its impact to the environment and striving for continuous improvement of the production process. Cumerio's state-of-the-art smelting facility in Pirdop has recently increased the anode production capacity to 250,000 tpy by the installation of the third evaporative cooler on the converters section that allows operating with three-hot converters. In April 2007 a general shut-down for repair and modification on the Flash Smelting Furnace and Waste Heat Boiler is envisaged. At this time a revamp of one of the existing Sulphuric Acid Plants is planned, resulting in a further copper capacity increase to 275,000 tpy with modest Capex. In 2005 Cumerio received from the Bulgarian Ministry of Environment and Water the Complex Permit under the EU IPPC criteria. Accordingly an Environmental Compliance Program was defined targeting a large reduction in the secondary emissions. The system will be commissioned in May 2007. In order to better integrate the smelter and refinery in Pirdop and to respond to the growing demand for cathodes in the region, a new state-of-the-art Electrolytic Refinery with an installed capacity of 180,000 tpy will replace the existing refinery. The new refinery is expected to be fully operational as from early 2008. This paper describes the challenges and the projects.

The nickel-cobalt sulphides produced from limonitic laterite ores by Moa Nickel S.A. in Cuba are refined at the Corefco nickel-cobalt refinery in Canada. Major changes to the refining process were required when the Moa sulphide feed, with its unusually high cobalt content, was introduced in the early 1990's. In the period 1994 to 2005 the production capacity of the refinery has increased dramatically to match increases at Moa, and significant process improvements incorporated. The process flowsheet consists of the original ammonia leach process, optimized for cobalt chemistry and overall leaching capacity. Extraction of metal values is followed by the unique nickel-cobalt separation technology, in which most of the cobalt is separated from the ammoniacal nickel sulphate leach solution by precipitation as a nickel-cobalt hexammine salt. This salt is refined from a Co:Ni ratio of 1:1 to over 10,000:1 by selectively leaching nickel, redissolution and recrystallization in ammonium sulphate solution. Nickel and cobalt are recovered using the well-known Sherritt hydrogen reduction technology. This paper reviews the chemistry described above, examines some of the changes in operating conditions made over the years and highlights some of the recent physical changes made to the refinery.

Introduction The property of Siscoe Gold Mines, Limited, is located on an island of three hundred and forty acres in lake Kienawisik, about fifty-two miles east of Noranda and forty-three miles south of Amos, Quebec. Lake Kienawisik is a part of the Harricanaw drainage system and is crossed by the main line of the Canadian National railway at Amos. This waterway is navigable for boats with a draught of six to eight feet. Diesel engines have been the source of power at the property since milling operations were commenced in January, 1929. The power plant as first designed and built was for a milling capacity of 100 tons. Two Polar-Atlas units, each of 200 h. p., comprised the original installation. With the growth of the 'mine, more engines were added until, at the present time, there is installed at the Siscoe what is rated the largest Diesel plant at any mining property in Canada. Definition of a Diesel 'The Diesel engine is an internal combustion engine which works with liquid fuel introduced after, and independently of, the air charge at a time when communication between the cylinder and the outside atmosphere is cut off, and which ignites the fuel by compression-beat and stored combustion-heat unassisted by heat sources outside the cylinder itself while the engine is in stable operating condition"(1).

"The design and implementation of grouting treatments in rock masses are procedures that require continuous adjustment of parameters and criteria to optimize the results. In this proposal we describe a set of tools that enhance decision-making for this type of jobs particularly in dam projects. The methodology is focused on hydrogeological zoning of the site and its constant update combining engineer’s experience with artificial intelligence techniques to integrate the site knowledge; as well as the evaluation of grouting results for different scrutiny scales, with special attention on the relationship between water absorption and grout consumption. INTRODUCTIONSeveral methodologies for design, implementation and evaluation for grouting rock masses have been developed for the solution of specific problems and tested in diverse geological conditions. Each of these methodologies is focused on results evaluation for different scrutiny scales (Table 1) and is employed to assist decision-making before or during the grouting process.Some methods define specifications for grouting each stage of the borehole, making theoretical, semi empirical or experience-based considerations to define basic parameters as maximum pressure, maximum volume, grouting time, flow rate, etc. Ultimately each approach aim to optimize the injection process, adjusting volumes or the grouting time required to obtain satisfactory results, reducing risk of creating new flow paths or unnecessary grout travels, and enhancing the mixture properties to achieve adequate penetrability and long-term behaviour. Some of these criteria have been widely used in dam projects, for example the concept of Grouting Based on Facts to define the maximum pressure and volume (Ewert, 1997), the GIN method (Lombardi & Deere, 1993; El Tani, 2012), or the North American standards based on Apparent Lugeon measures (Naudts, 1995; Bruce 2011); on the other hand, there are relatively new criteria that have shown good results for dam grouting as the Aperture Control Method (Bonin et al., 2012; Carter et al., 2012) or the Real Time Grouting Control Method (Stille et al., 2012)."

"DURING 1951, experimental cleaning studies on both fines and larger sizes of certain Canadian coals were conducted on a relatively large scale in two pilot plants in the United States, large enough to be considered as small commercial units, and in one commercial plant in Canada.One of the pilot plants was a wet washer of a type which apparently has never been .used in Canada, nor has any Canadian coal been tested in it before. In the other pilot plant and in the commercial plant, dry cleaning equipment was used. The commercial plant is the first of its kind to be employed in Canada, and this type is used only to a limited extent in the United States.Fine-Coal Cleaning ExperimentsTest PlantsHydrotator and Hydrotator-Classifier combination pilot-plant with a capacity of about twenty tons per hour. This is a classifier type washer adapted for cleaning fine coal as well as certain intermediate sizes. The Hydrotator deals with that portion of a coal retained on approximately a 24-mesh Tyler sieve, whereas the Hydrotator-Classifier deals with the minus 24-mesh fines."

THE discussion on Dr. Chipman's paper, Mapping by the Topographical Survey, centred mainly on the urgent need for aerial photographic reconnaissance of unmapped portions of the country as an initial phase in the provision of suitable topographical maps for use as a guide in geological mapping, prospecting, exploration, and development work in the areas concerned. This, ir was pointed out, would necessitate an expansion of the topographical work of the Bureau of Topography to keep pace with the photographid work and to meet the demand for maps for use by geologists of the Bureau of Geology and others. A resolution requesting Institute Council to make representations to the proper authorities, urging that aerial photography and topographic map-ping be greatly expanded to meet the pressing needs of the situation, was moved by DR. W. F. JAMES and seconded by MR. L. G. SMITH, and carried unanimously. The full text of the resolution appeared on page 221 of the May BULLETIN. Others who spoke in support of the resolution were MESSRS. E. S. MOORE, L. B. ROCHESTER, F. D. SHEPHERD, and W. J. WRIGHT. Dr. Hansen then presented his paper, Mapping by the Geological Survey, discussion on which is summarized below. MR. FRANK EBBUTT(l) spoke of the very valuable service the Geological Survey bas rendered the mineral industry, and indeed the whole nation, in its century of existence, despite the very inadequate financial support it has received. Now, more than ever before, a strong and expanded Geological Survey is essential if the Industry is to continue to prosper. Our known ore reserves are being depleted very rapidly, and we are finding no new orebodies to take their place. As an aid in prospecting and exploration, and also in the development of orebodies when they have been found, we must have geological maps of the vast sections of the country which at present are unmapped or inadequately mapped. The Institute should make every endeavour to have the Geological Survey strengthened so that such maps may be made available as soon as possible.

Introduction The importance of coal in our economy is well established, but it may not .be so generally realized how important a part it plays in our daily life. Select a product - any product - and, if it is made in America, bituminous coal has touched it first. Everywhere we will find coal, derivatives of coal, or functions made possible by coal. Apart from the well known major uses of coal for domestic purposes, coking, utilities, railways, and manufacture of steel and cement, there are over 200,000 products derived from coal, from lipstick colours to nylon products and perfumes. An item of interest is the recent action of the Canadian Government in voting $90,000 for development of coal deposits in Yukon Territory to make coal available to the settlers in that area. The value of this move, in case of some emergency, is very evident. Coal in its several stages of formation as peat, lignite, sub-bituminous, bituminous, semi-bituminous, semi-anthracite, and anthracite, has been used for centuries. Coal, as such, was not very well known to the ancients. First reference to "magic stone', or coal, was in 371 BC by Theophrastus, a pupil of Aristotle. This substance was said to burn like wood coal or charcoal and was used by the smiths. The first record we have in modern times was in 852 AD, when sea coal was gathered by the cowled monks of Durham, in Britain, and even at that time a major problem was transportation. Our first record of coal in this continent was near Richmond, Virginia, in 1700. Commercial mining was not under way, however, until 1750. The anthracite fields (presumably in Pennsylvania) were opened in 1793. Even so, there was no extensive mining until about the year 1820. The famous Pocahontas coalfields were opened in 1883. The earliest record of coal mining in Canada is about 1746.

The Goldfields area on the north shore of Lake Athabasca , was active in the thirties and early fortie . In 1934, Tom Box discovered gold mineralization in quartz veins in pyritized 'granite' at the ite of what wa to become the Box Mine of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Ltd . In the rush of activity that followed numerou other gold occurrences were found. the most significant of the e being the Athona and Frontier prospects which underwent underground development bur did not reach production. Probable reserve identified to date in the Box and Athona deposits amount to some 3.5 million ton grading an average 0.ITT oz gold/ton . Some 10 to 15 million tons of lower grade, po ible reserve are also reported at the Box. From 1939 to 1942, the mine produced, from underground , 64,066 ounces of gold from ore grading 0.0452 oz gold/ton at a cost of between $1.5 and $2.0 a ton. The Goldfield area is underlain by upracrustal rock intruded by mafic bodies and invaded by ·granite'. The upracru tal . thought to be of Lower Proterozoic age are characterized by a helf-type ucce ion metamorpho ed under lowermiddle amphibolire facie conditions into quartzites, quartz-mica chi ts. dolomitic marbles, diop idic calc-silicates and cordierite-anthophyllite-biotite schi t . Amphibolites of presumed igneou origin form concordant to subconcordant units up to a few ten of metre thick in the upracrustals and occur as le regular masses in the 'g ranite·. Compositionally they vary from gabbroic to granodioritic. with the more mafic varieties being most common. Granitic rocks exhibiting a variety of textural , structural and compositional characteristics underlie most of the area. Four main units are recognized: foliated (older) 'granite', 'leucogranite', feldspar augen 'granite· and pyritic mine 'granite', however, in geological mapping the e are somewhat arbitrarily differentiated due to transitional relationships and admixture of types. Although there is no unambiguous age data available for the e 'granite ' adjacent northshore 'granite' of geologically similar age yield Rb-Sr isochron dates around 2000 Ma. The area is characterized by two major deformation events of which the earliest gave rise to the dominant regional foliation and to rare minor and outcrop scale folds. This foliation which in general parallels compositional layering is folded into the major Goldfields syncline, whose axis plunges weakly to moderately outh. Related open minor folds have subvertical axial surfaces which are locally paralleled by a weakly defined schistosity. Most rock display a pronounced rodding fabric, coaxial with second fold axes and apparently the product of this deformation event. However, a note of caution is introduced into this interpretation, as the rodding fabric is also parallel to first fold axe .

There is general acceptance that climate change, which is the most important challenge facing humanity, is anthropogenic and attributed to fossil fuel consumption. Therefore, improving the performance of our existing energy systems and deploy more renewable energy resources is an urgent issue to be addressed. Geothermal refers to existing of heat energy in deep rock and sedimentary basins. This energy can be used to drive a power turbine to generate electricity. Traditionally, geothermal has been exploited in places with the plentiful hot water at relatively shallow depth. In the light of fact that ground temperature increases with the depth everywhere on the Earth, engineered geothermal systems (EGS) can be installed in any place to exploit the geothermal in generating energy. Unfortunately, the high exploration and drilling costs of boreholes is the main barrier to commerciality of EGS worldwide. In addition, there are technical problems associated with drilling big depth. In oil producing countries such problems can be addressed by utilizing whether active or abandoned oil or gas wells and, consequently, EGS can produce power at profit. The current study presents an analysis of a binary geothermal power generation system for commercial electricity generation in Qatar. For this purpose, two binary cycles are assumed the main difference between them is that the first one is air cooled while the other will be water cooled. The performance of the two cycles and the possibility of improvement has been shown. Economic analysis the power plant shows that the levelized costs of electricity is 3.6US¢/kWh and the pay-back time is less than 8 years.

"Promote and apply a new beneficiation technology and equipment effectively processing the refractory and medium-fine grained weak-magnetic minerals. HUATE® Forced-oil Cooling Vertical Ring WHIMS adopts the transformer oil cooling technology to cool excitation coils, solving the easily generated scaling problem resulting from water cooling, thereby to eliminate the demineralized water system. With <25 temperature ?raise, its magnetic field is stable. Wrapped by outer magnetic armor, it can generate a background intensity 1360kA/m. It effects very well in 1) wet preseparating the weak-magnetic coarse grains, like hematite, manganese ore, ilmenite, and purifying the concentrate; 2) removing the ferrous impurities and purifying the non-metallic minerals, like quartz, feldspar, kaolin; 3) enriching and recovering tailings from non-ferrous metals, like copper, lead, cobalt, molybdenum, thereby to greatly improve the mine resource utilization. It has applied 14 relative patents in China, and the invention patent in 56 countries, like Russia, USA, Australia, via PCT international organization. HUATE® WHIMS has been applied and accepted in more than 100 mines in and out of China. Compared with water cooling vertical ring WHIMS, it’s energy-saving and water-saving, and avoiding generating the scale. While compared with JONES WHIMS under the same separation indexes, it’s featured of more space-effective, lighter, lower costs, higher gradient, higher efficiency, larger processing capacity and wider grain application scope. Greatly promoting development of mineral processing technologies, HUATE® WHIMS is the equipment to reduce costs and improve efficiency urgently needed by the mine enterprises now.INTRODUCTIONAt present, influenced by the price and production factors, the international market demand for the grade of iron ores is increasing continuously. Restricted by the ore occurrence state, the beneficiation technology level and product economic value, every year the stope strips the stockpiling and discards hundreds of millions of tons of waste rocks containing iron, especially the weak magnetic hematite and limonite with <20% Fe%. The utilization technological bottleneck of these waste rocks makes their concentration ratio as high as 5-6, which leads to the huge wastes of energy, materials and beneficiation reagents and the increase of production costs. The effective solution is to improve the selected Fe% of the waste rocks like hematite. With the successful application of HPGR technologies in Chinese large iron mines, the mill feeding size has been reduced to 6-0 mm or 3-0 mm from the original 15-0 mm in the crushing system with 3 stages of crushing and 1 stage of closed circuit. This creates the conditions for the wet separation and recovery. While for the medium-fine grained weak-magnetic minerals, it lacks of the effective separation and recovery equipment in the world, which’s badly in need of R&D of the medium-fine grained high gradient wet strong magnetic preseparation equipment."

"Using the calculated (Thermo-Calc software) and experimental methods (SEM, TEM, EMPA, DSC, XRD, etc.) the phase composition, structure and hardening of aluminium alloys of the Al-Ca-Zn-Mg system were studied in the following range: 2. 5%Mg, up to 10% Ca, and up to 14% Zn (wt%). Fragments of this quaternary phase diagram in the aluminium corner were constructed, including the liquidus surface, as well as some vertical sections. It was shown that the relatively large amount of zinc enters in the Ca-containing phase, which formula can be described as (Al,Zn)4Ca. An increase of Zn content leads to formation of Al4Ca primary crystals at lower concentrations of calcium. The eutectic (Al)+(Al,Zn)4Ca has a fine structure and aluminide particles are capable to spheroidization during the heat treatment at temperature 500 C. The maximal level of hardness observed on calcium containing alloys was higher than 200 HV, what gives the reason to expect good strength properties. With an example of an Al-9% Zn-2,5%Mg-3,5% Ca model experimental alloy based on the (Al)+(Al,Zn)4Ca eutectic, a principal possibility of manufacturing thin rolled sheets was demonstrated.INTRODUCTION Aluminum alloyed with calcium was first studied in 1970-80s by such authors as Piatti (1976), Moore (1978, 1980), Il'enko (1985), Swaminathan (1990), and Perez-Prado (1997) as superplastic materials. In particular, the alloy systems Al-Ca-Zn were studied (Il'enko, 1985, Swaminathan, 1990, Perez-Prado, 1997). For some time there was no new published works concerning the aluminum-calcium alloys. During the last years many works were published dedicated to the calcium alloying of magnesium alloys (Kim, 2011; Xu, 2011; Aljarrah, 2008; Bakhsheshi, 2014). This urged the authors (Belov, Naumova & Akopyan, 2016) to start studying cast and wrought aluminum-calcium alloys for construction (2008–2014). There is almost no information in the literature concerning triple and more complex diagrams of the aluminum-based system states with calcium and other elements. In recent work, parts of the state diagrams are plotted for the aluminum angle zone: Al-Ca-Mg-Sc (Belov, Naumova & Bazlova, 2016), Al-Ca-Ni-Sc (Belov, Naumova & Bazlova, 2017), Al-Ca-Si-Sc (Belov, Naumova & Akopyan, 2017) and others. Special attention was paid to the study of the system Al-Ca-Zn-Mg (Naumova, 2017). Based on this system creation of advanced extra-high tensile alloys is planned. Wrought extra-high tensile alloys series 7??? based on the system Al-Zn-Mg-Cu are well studied."

Modern mineral exploration depends on multidisciplinary 3-dimensional integration of geological and geophysical data. Identification of the geological sources of geophysical anomalies requires knowledge of the physical properties fingerprint of rock types, formations and their alteration products. Understanding how and why rock physical properties vary within the Earth&apos;s subsurface ensures that appropriate geophysical exploration methods can be chosen, and allows for more efficient and effective surveys to be designed. Physical properties knowledge is integral to geophysical modeling - measured data or values estimated based on geological understanding are used to produce realistic forward calculations and to constrain inversion models. Mira Geoscience and the Geological Survey of Canada, in collaboration with industry and academia, are building a Rock Properties Database System (rpds.mirageoscience.com). It compiles the most valuable physical properties for mineral exploration (density, porosity, magnetic susceptibility and remanence, electrical resistivity and chargeability) linked with location and lithological metadata. A critical knowledge gap, addressed in this study, concerns the dependence of physical properties on alteration and mineralization processes. We report on the results of a collaborative University of British Columbia - Geoscience British Columbia project, ?Integrated Geological & Geophysical Porphyry Models: Adding Value to Geoscience BC Geophysical Data?. As part of the QUEST and QUEST-West geophysical initiatives, Geoscience BC focused detailed geophysical surveys on a suite of six known porphyry deposits: Mount Milligan, Endako, Huckleberry, Bell, Granisle, and Morrison. Physical properties for a set of 269 samples of characteristic host rocks and their altered equivalents were measured. The causes of physical properties variations were investigated through their correlations with ore and alteration mineralogy determined from thin-section observations and X-ray diffraction analyses. Physical properties of variably altered host-rocks and intrusive rocks vary significantly between different BC porphyry deposits. No specific unifying geophysical model exists that can be uniformly applied during exploration. Knowledge of local background geology and local physical properties variations is necessary as host-rocks and intrusive rock compositions vary depending on magmatic affinities, and alteration styles will vary reflecting host-rock compositions, crustal depth and influence of meteoric water. A district-scale exploration strategy requires location of intrusive bodies, which are commonly magnetic, resistive and low in density. Correlations should not be expected between density and magnetic susceptibility, because alteration may lead to magnetite destruction or to secondary magnetite development. Deposit-scale ground geophysics might image potassic alteration zones that can be magnetic in both alkalic and calcalkalic systems. Low magnetic susceptibilities, resistivities and densities might aid in locating the typically more porous phyllic and argillic zones. All geophysical data must be interpreted with background knowledge of local rock types and in light of the expected deposit model and associated magmatic and hydrothermal processes. The most effective means to building physical properties knowledge prior to geophysical investigation remains collecting rock physical properties measurements. The cost of rock properties data collection is low, relative to the overall costs of running a mineral exploration program, and can provide an important framework for design of geophysical surveys, survey method selection, geophysical modelling, and data interpretation.

"The coal deposits from Cape Perce on Cape Breton Island have been known to supply the coal requirements of the people living in or visiting the area for close to 300 years.A major block of coal has been identified off Cape Perce, which has several seams from which coal can be taken. The initial development by the Cape Breton Development Corporation will be in the Harbour Seam and constitutes the Donkin-Morien Development Project.The CBDC&apos;s confidence in this indicated resource is based on its knowledge of the Sydney Coal Field and from boreholes driven into the block during the summers of1977, 78 and 79. In 1980, further geological data were gathered from surface drilling and an intermediate-depth high-resolution seismic survey. The surface facilities for the Donkin-Morien Development Project will be located on the northern half of the cape, with access declines extending 3.9 km in a north-northeasterly direction to the Donkin block of coal reserves. The development has the potential of supplying all the coal needed f or the future electrical power generation requirements of Nova Scotia for many years to come.The planned mine, for which a project definition study has recently been completed, will have a production rate in excess of 3 million tonnes per year.IntroductionAt the Second CIM District 1 Meeting held in Halifax in October 1980, a background paper on Phase II of the Donkin-Morien Development Project was presented. The project involves a 3.2-million-tonne, saleable, underground coal mine. At that time, the chronological sequence of events had unfolded, starting with the initial boreholes through to the feasibility study, and on through site clearing and site preparation. This led to engineering design contracts for the portals and the two tunnels to be driven to intersect with the Harbour Seam close to 4 km from their entry point."

"Soil-gas Rn was measured by two types of alpha-particle-track detectors, by emanometry and by counting alpha-activity on Rn-decay-product collectors. Soil samples were analyzed for V by fluorimetric and fission-track methods, their Rn-emanation by decay-product collectors and their total alpha activities with track detectors. The same uranium anomalies were revealed by each method. Fission-track analysis of leaves for V showed only random variations with sampling site, and the Rn emanation of trees and leaves removed from them was barely detectable . The agreement among the other methods is significant, total alpha and collector methods are simple, rapid and useful, and a combination of methods at a site would reveal disequilibrium in the U-decay series if present. Track-Rn measurements are highly reproducible and insensitive to apparatus design and their sensitivity is not enhanced by covering the detectors with thin foil or placing them in large containers.IntroductionIn the past two years , a number of methods of geochemical exploration for uranium have been tested by the authors over the known copper-uranium occurrence at South March, Ontario. This was done partly to compare methods and partly to develop and test new ones. The South march deposit has been described a number of times by others(1,2,3,4). The methods included in this study were the following.Emanometry, Radon in soil gas is measured by pumping the gas into the cell of a scintillation counter or emanometer(5,6). Alpha particles from radon (222Rn) and its decay products (218Po and 214Po) produce scintillations of light in the silver-activated zinc sunphide (ZnS(Ag) covering the walls of the cell.
