The projection of operating costs for mining, processing, and other site operating costs is an exercise which can be fraught with considerable peril. Not only are the physical characteristics of each mineral property unique, but a range of other factors will influence the consultant's approach to compiling cash flow estimates. This paper details some of the techniques used in estimating operating costs for use in order-of-magnitude cost studies and feasibility studies, and describes how to avoid common areas of difficulty. A series of examples relating to open pit gold mining and processing cost estimates illustrate these problems, and various corrective methods are described. The mining and treatment processes, and their associated cost elements, are followed in sequence of operation from on-going ore delineation through to disposal of the product. In addition the problem of assigning management, administration and overhead costs along with taxation allowances is addressed. Of critical importance is the application or possible misapplication of accrual procedures to the cost elements. In many cases such misapplication can introduce more pronounced errors with projects of short duration, such as the typical open pit/C.I.P. gold operation commenced in the last decade. The importance of providing verification of estimates depending upon the standard of the cost study is also investigated, and opinion is provided upon the minimum levels of verification necessary at various stages. Finally, the amalgamation of the various individual cost elements into a coherent whole is reviewed.

Mining operations are continually aiming to reduce operating costs to improve plant profitability. One way in which the Cannington operation sought to achieve this was by increasing the wear life and reducing the energy consumption of their flotation mechanisms. This was made possible using Outotec’s FloatForce mechanism. The FloatForce mechanism has been developed by Outotec over a six year period involving both CFD modelling and rigorous site testing. FloatForce delivers improved air dispersion and cell agitation efficiency; as such it can be operated at lower rotor tip speeds when compared to Outotec’s previous mechanism.Cannington trialled three FloatForce mechanisms in a train of ten OK38 zinc roughers. The mechanisms’ rotational speed was reduced by 10% compared to the previously installed MultiMix mechanisms. The purpose of the trial was to quantify the energy saving and assess whether there was any reduction in plant metallurgical performance.The trial was successful with FloatForce delivering a 17% reduction in power, an improvement in wear and improved recovery. Analysis of pre and post-installation metallurgical accounting data showed the following:The FloatForce installation resulted in a recovery increase of zinc to zinc final concentrate of 0.4 – 4.0%*The FloatForce installation resulted in a recovery increase of lead to zinc final concentrate of 0.0 – 0.3%*There was no statistically significant change in silver recovery to zinc final concentrate that can be attributed to FloatForce**95% confidence interval (CI) using multiple linear regression models.The Cannington operation is now in the process of further optimizing its power consumption and wear savings by changing the remaining OK38 zinc and lead rougher float cells to FloatForce mechanisms.CITATION:Bird, M, Oats, B and Sganzerla, M, 2015. BUCKETT (Lake View and Star Limited) : At the outset I should like to add my congratulations to those already extended to Mr..Norwood on his excellent paper, which has given us all an inspiration to strive further to improve our plant recoveries. In some respects this paper has left us so little to discuss without considerable time spent on. further research work. At all points one is met by a baffling array of facts which leave one feeling hesitant to speak.The careful and methodical way in which Mr. Norwood went along step by step until all channels of research presenting themselves were tested to his own satisfaction leaves me with but a few comments to make. Particularly striking to me is the explanation of the residual gold values in calcines by recrystallization of haematite and here is a line to be attacked by future studies. This will be mentioned again later.Particularizing on the paper, the first point that struck me was the method of change of pyrite through to the final haematite. I have never been able to satisfy myself that a sample taken from various positions along a roaster when cooled, as described on p. 397, represented a fair sample of the conditions at that point, but I must confess that I have not found a substitute that did satisfy me.However, the following figures are illuminating... A challenge on many industrial flotation circuits is controlling concentrate mineral grades using measurements that are provided infrequently. The mineral grades in concentrate streams are a critical performance indicator in any industrial flotation circuit. Failure to achieve concentrate mineral grade targets has significant financial consequences on a flotation operation. A violation of gangue mineral grade limits by the concentrator may also result in significant penalties.Online grade analysers which can provide reliable real time grade measurements are essential for effective grade optimisation. The Blue Cube MQi analyser (by Blue Cube Systems) has recently come to prominence for its ability to rapidly determine mineral concentrate grades online and has the benefit of operating in-stream. This has provided excellent insight into the actual process dynamics in the flotation circuit, and hence enabled real-time control and optimisation of concentrate mineral grades.MintekÆs Measurement and Control division, specialising in advanced control solutions for mineral and metallurgical industries, has had the opportunity to link the FloatStar Grade-Recovery Optimiser to the measurements provided by the Blue Cube system at the BCL nickel concentrator plant in Botswana. The project focused on stabilising the final concentrate grade while ensuring the final tailings are minimised, resulting in an improved nickel recovery. This site already had the FloatStar Grade-Recovery Optimiser for several years, but the original grade measurement device was unreliable and ultimately failed. The system was reactivated once the Blue Cube system was installed, replacing the old analyser. Rehabilitation of mining sites helps to achieve the purpose 5(2c) of The Resource Management Act 1991 û æavoiding, remedying, or mitigating any adverse effects of activities on the environmentÆ. The environmental outcomes for recent and current mining operations on the West Coast are variable. There are some exemplary mining operations which are restoring or even improving land use and environmental factors in the region, particularly those operated by the larger mining companies. There are also examples of an exploitative mentality where the environment and land have been severely degraded by mining activities. Technology has been developed to prevent a repetition of the historical destruction of the environment through mining. Failure to rehabilitate mined land is no longer acceptable to the New Zealand public in the 1990s and damages the credibility of the mining industry. Examples of successful mine site rehabilitation to pastoral farming and to production or plantation forestry are illustrated from the alluvial gold mining industry. Planning, sequencing of operations, the utilization of sailor plant growth materials, and aftercare are key factors in successful land rehabilitation to these productive uses. There is also a recent focus on restoring indigenous forests and wetlands at both coal and gold mining sites, particularly for mines on or adjacent to the conservation estate. The results of scientific research and efforts by the industry on techniques for rehabilitating rainforest and pakihi wetland after mining are presented, particularly from the Giles Creek Dunoille Coal Mine. There is a need for further research and trials to apply and extend rehabilitation techniques to other geological and environmental situations, particularly to mines in mountainous areas and to difficult environments like the coal measures ecosystems of the plateaux above Westport.

A poured slag bottom is universally considered to be the best type bottom for copper reverberatory furnaces. It is impervious to molten matte and ready for immediate use.When molten slag is not available a monolithic silica bottom is the second best; such a bottom has been adopted at Mount Morgan. The laying of such a bottom is a phase of smelter construction on which so little real information is obtainable that a day to day record of such a recent example as Mt. Morgan's 19 ft. x 40 ft. reverberatory may be of interest. The work was done under the direction of E. Pesout, of McGill Smelter, Nevada. PREPARATION OF THE BOTTOMA 26-inch bed of closely packed firebrick with sand-filled joints was first laid on the clean, dry concrete foundation and the whole dried out by small fires maintained on the brickwork for several days. Ninety tons of silica sand was meantime thoroughly dried and stored in clean drums. This sand must be low in FeO and CaO and contain about 95% Si02 , the majority of which should be present as tridymite. This form of silica shows little expansion at high temperatures, for it is the form stable between 870° and 1470° C.Its presence thus minimises disturbance to the bottom by the expansion which, during the burning in, would mark the transformation of quartz to tridymite.

The State of New South Wales is highly favoured in having vast deposits of coal adjacent to and within easy reach of the coastal Ports. Not only is the quality of the fuel generally superior to any found in the other States, but it is greater in extent than in any other part of the Continent. For interesting and reliable details of the history of the discovery of coal, the geology of the coal bearing strata, analysis of the various coals and other valuable data, the readers are referred to the book recently issued by the New South Wales Government, entitled The Mineral Resources of New South Wales, by Edward F. Pittman, A.R.S.M., etc., by the direction of the Hon. T. L. Fegan, Minister for Mines. The mining community is indebted to the Minister for having had published the most valuable condensed record of the mineral resources of the State extant.For the purposes of this paper we will only give such a general description of the coal fields as will make it intelligible in connection with the subject of the coal mining in the State of New South Wales.

A way back in 1851-2 an army of diggers had commenced the conquest, of the now famous goldfields of Australasia. At that time, and in the Colony of Victoria, more that 10,000 were camped on and around the slopes of the silurian ridges over which Ballarat East h'as been built. A wonderfully rich golden harvest was soon gathered from the alluvial found high on these slopes, and from runs (or gutters) which got their rise on them, and were traced down gullies into a broad valley. In due course it was ascertained that the valley carried a main gutter which represented the unity of the higher ones, and further explorations proved this gutter to have a westerly and then a southerly trend toward and under a basaltic plateau, on the top ofwhich Ballarat West and Sebastopol now stand. In the records of alluvial gold mining all the world over the Ballarat field can be classed amongst the richest. Gold in pieces the size of beans, in, stringy filigree bits, in dust and in solid lumps (the largest of which weighed more than 2,200 ozs.), was obtained in the comparatively shallow ground on the slopes; and speaking generally, great and uniform richness was met with along a belt of country on which, in a north and south line, the present quartz mines of Ballarat East are at work. It was noticed by the diggers that when the gutters crossed the upturned edges of the ,strata, the gold deposits in them were patchy, and that when they trended north and south on this beltthey carried rich deposits for longer distances. In time it was also noticf!d that a class of stringy, irregular shaped quartz occurrences, in a bottom of soft slates, in the, immediate vicinity of tpe g)ltter, meant greater richness, and (in the aIluvial) on the higher ground slabs of quartz would now and then be met with, in which strings and spongy masses of gold were found. As the shallow alluvial became worked out the diggers turned their attention to the quartz occurrences, and, now and again the striking of a flat make of a very golden nature would cause quite a stir in the local mining world.

THE method depends upon:--1. The position of the mill.2. The space available for stacking the residue.3. The nature of the residue as discharged from the mill.4. The value of the residue for re-treatment.5. The requirement of the residue for underground filling.Originally the conditions in this district varied mainly in the position of the mill, some mills having an elevated site with plenty of dumping space for the time being, whilst others had a flat site, and very little dumping space near at hand; but in most cases the residue discharged was in the form of filter-press cakes, suitable for conveying on belts, or in trucks, and stacking in a high clump; and, while a portion of the residue was used for underground filling, the dump was regarded as a valuable asset, to be re-treated later. Under these conditions, conveyor belts, electric trams, aerial trams, and hose trucks, all gave satisfactory results, and the following figures, taken from "'West Australian Metallurgical Practice," will show how these methods compared as regards costs...

Using iron- and sulfur-oxidising bacteria to catalyse the breakdown of sulfides that host the gold is an important biological method for the pretreatment of refractory gold ores. Following this biological treatment a combination of chemical and physical methods are used for leaching (such as the cyanide process) and concentration (such as carbon-in-pulp or electrowinning) of gold. Although these methods are well accepted by industry, they harbour limitations in the processing of low-grade refractory ores, and regulatory agency/public acceptance of cyanide use. Thus, it is beneficial to industry to develop environmentally friendly, cost-efficient leaching and concentration techniques that are based on micro-organisms. This may soon be possible by adapting the results of recent regolith geoscience research, which has shown that micro- organisms are capable of driving a biogeochemical cycle of gold dispersion, transport and reconcentration in the supergene environment. The indigenous microbiota in biologically active soil microcosms from a number of Australian sites are capable of solubilising up to 80 wt per cent of the gold contained in these materials during 50 days of incubation. Studies using molecular microbial techniques have shown that a metallophilic bacterium, Ralstonia metallidurans, is present in biofilms on gold grains from a number of Australian sites. R metallidurans is capable of actively accumulating gold from solution, suggesting that the bacterium may contribute to the formation of secondary gold grains and nuggets. Identifying the biochemical and physiological pathways that lead to the dispersion and accumulation of gold in regolith, and quantifying the reaction kinetics of these processes may thus lead to the development of industrial bio-processing capacities for gold-containing ores.

This Institute, by nature of its charter, draws on various persons in the mining and metallurgical world of Australasia for its President from year to year, and consequently when the presidential address is given by one of these people the topic. which they generally select is a topic to which they are accustomed and on which they are able to speak with authority.As most of you know, my prime object in life has been concerned with steelmaking, so tonight you can steel yourself to the thought that you are going to be spoken to about steelmaking.Even if that were not the case, and were I not particularly interested in steelmaking, I think it would be appropriate to look at steelmaking in a broad sense on a basis of pure metallurgical interest, because the steel industry is going through as big a revolution today as it went through something over one hundred years ago when Bessemer made a theory become a fact.Bessemer, and as the Americans prefer to think Kelly, separately conceived the idea of blowing cold air through molten pig iron, and, contrary to the then general belief, this did not result in cooling of the metal but succeeded rather in heating it, and in burning out of the rather crude pig iron the impurities which prevented it from becoming a ductile metal.For many years before this, steel had been made in a very small painstaking way by what was known as the crucible process. At Ohio Creek, 3 km northwest of the Thames bonanza goldfield, porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation is hosted in a dacite porphyry associated with porphyry intrusion breccias and overlying andesites and dacites. The geological setting is a Jurassic greywacke basement overlain by Late Miocene andesite-dacite volcanics which are extensively altered to propylitic and argillic assemblages. Diamond drilling at Ohio Creek in 1978-1981 by Amoco Minerals intersected low grade Cu-Au (0.12-0.20% C~ 0.23-0.4 glt Au) mineralisation An advanced argillic 'alteration cap containing quartz-alunite¦dickite or pyrophyllite-dickite¦diaspore is centred on the adjacent Lookout Rocks and has potential for high sulfidation Au-Cu mineralisation. There is a zonation from potassic K-feldspar-magnetitealteration at depth in the dacite porphyry, through an overlying phyllic quartzsericite- pyrite zone which is overprinted by pyrophyllite in the overlying advanced argillic cap. Early quartz stockwork veinlets associated with the potassic alteration contain fluid inclusions that trapped a highly saline (50-80 wt% NaCI equiv) fluid at high temperatures (450 to >600¦C) indicative of a magmatic fluid. Some chalcopyrite is associated with slightly later quartz-magnetite veinlets, but the bulk of the copper occurs as disseminated chalcopyrite associated with the phyllic alteration. The potassic alteration is surrounded and overprinted by propylitic chlorite¦epidote alteration. Late polymetallic sulfide-quartz-anhydrite veins occur within and around the margins of the porphyry system as in the Kaiser Reef. Fluid inclusions associated with these late veins were formed at temperatures of about 250-320¦C from low salinity (1-3 wfl~ NaCI equiv) fluids. The spatial association between porphyry eu-Au mineralisation, advanced argillic alteration and polymetallic sulfide veins suggests that they are genetically part of the same hydrothennal system. This is consistent with reconnaissanceK-Ar dates of 11.6-10.7 Ma for the intrusive porphyry at Ohio Creek, alunite in the advanced argillic alteration zone at Lookout Rocks and sericite selvedges from the Waiotahi gold-quartz veins at Thames.

The history of mill liners has evolved over time and this paper tracks the changes and development of liner technology. It provides an overview of the primary types of liners, the design and the materials of construction. The design of a mill liner is driven by application, materials of construction, casting technology and handling issues. The choice of solid steel, grid liners, rubber or composites and magnetic liners is based on many factors.The methods used for monitoring wear and predicting eventual change out time are many and varied. The contribution of discrete element modeling (DEM) analysis in predicting wear profile is discussed.Mill trajectory and DEM software programs are used with great effect to predict the effect of lifter height, face angle, high low lifters or mill speed. In the field, trial and operational experience is used or improvements/design concepts at one operation are applied to another. Broken mill lifters, accentuated wear and other problems can be better understood using hardness testing, chemical analysis and photo micrograph analysis of pearlitic or martensitic structure along with fracture face observations. This forms a part of the typical root cause analysis. However given correct and sound liner and lifter, feed and discharge design media selection, and materials of construction, the majority of premature liner or bolting failure is normally attributed to incorrect operational methods such as excessive high ball to feed ratio, incorrect mill speed relating to lifter ball throw, incorrect media selection, "tramp" material entering the mill charge from upstream or recirculating process and understanding the specific mill operation in question.It is hoped that this paper will benefit mill operators who are faced with challenges of improving wear life and at the same time optimizing mill throughput and performance.CITATION:Connelly, D and Thompson, C, 2013. A homely simile will serve to epitomise an interpretation of the rock structures and associated phenomena of the block of country under review, as it appears to the writer.Disregarding the many thousands of feet of overburden that have been eroded away during the ages, the present denuded surface and rock systems below may be pictured as a slab of some titanie ribbon cake that has suffered much damage from rough handling and exposure, yet retaining much of the original symmetry of its superimposed layers of variegated colour and texture.Lateral pressure has crumpled the cake into a series of irregular corrugations and, in parts, has caused some of the layers to crush and slide over their neighbours.Following upon this squeeze, the cake has been severed into segments and rhomboidal slabs by vertical cuts, and these portions have been severely jostled one against its neighbour, crushing the faces of contact and dragging the contiguous layers in the direction of movement.The variegated icing of the cake is represented by intercalated sills of amphibolite, pegmatite, and aplite, and the body of the cake by highly altered sedimentary rocks.The icing has been assailed by the rats of erosion with such effect that only residuals of the original structures remain. The body of the cake has suffered successive waves of igneous invasion in the order of lode pegmatite, followed by zine, iron,copper, and finally by silver-lead. These successive invaders found difficult access, along certain of the vertical cuts, to the more succulent layers of the cake, where, gorging to repletion, many were imprisoned and entombed for the future service of mankind.

Thermodynamic properties of the solutions of hydrogen in metals and carbon in austenite were investigated and it is possible to predict the interstitial solubility in these systems over relatively wide ranges of temperature and solute activity. Monte Carlo methods were used to compute the arrangements of interstitial atoms on the tetrahedral sites in body centred cubic metals and the octahedral sites in face centred cubic metals. It was shown that the non-configurational entropies of solution of hydrogen in metals can be interpreted as being principally vibrational and on this basis the potential value of the isotopic solubility ratio theory in indicating the compositional variation of these non-configurational entropies was discussed. The need for future work along these lines is pointed out.

For years traditional optical microscopic techniques have been used successfully to carry out mineralogical studies on processing products. Essential information could be obtained by supplementing microscopic data with X-ray powder diffraction data, chemical analyses, etc. However, most of the time the mineralogists working on plant related issues, would supply qualitative information to the metallurgists, due to quantification not being possible in the available time. Since the late-80s, the use of semi-automated to automated techniques for mineral quantification has impacted positively on the use of mineralogy for optimising processing plants. Rustenburg Platinum Mines (now Anglo Platinum) were the first mining company to purchase a Qem*Sem in 1987. With the success achieved in quantifying the minerals in the concentrator streams of the Rustenburg Platinum operations, a second instrument was purchased soon after. These instruments have proven invaluable tools in understanding the flotation behaviour of the sulfide and gangue minerals in the various reefs of the Bushveld. Restrictions in the resolution of these earlier instruments, as well as the time involved in searching for and correctly identifying the fine-grained platinum-group minerals (PGM), meant that these investigations focused on the deportment of the more abundant base metal sulfides, rather than on the actual PGM. The Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA), which became available in the late 1990s, was well suited to detect and analyse minerals occurring in trace amounts such as the PGM. Anglo Platinum was the first mining company to purchase such an instrument and now has fourteen systems operating at the AR Crown Mines site. One of the applications of these systems involves the study of feeds, concentrates and tailings from the various concentrators on a monthly basis. These routine investigations provide information on a variety of mineralogical parameters, including liberation, association, and grain size. Results are used to emphasise areas for improvement, and specifically underline those areas where improvements will have the most impact on recovery. After new or different technologies have been implemented, mineralogical characterisation of the different process streams is an essential component in the assessment of the impact of these changes on flotation performance. In addition, the knowledge is databased for future reference to draw trends across the various concentrators around the Bushveld complex, and is also used for comparative studies when plants experience high losses to tailings. Due to the success of these investigations the question was posed whether it was possible to obtain data on a daily basis, as compositing samples could hide the impact of daily events. Although the instruments currently used are suitable for a research environment, these are not ideal for mine-site implementation. For that reason Anglo Platinum, together with FEI embarked on a development program to develop a system that can be implemented on-site to measure the important mineralogical characteristics on a daily basis. Important requirements for such a system include time-to-data, ease of use and regular quality control. Highlighting some results from concentrator studies, the presentation will review the progress on the development of automated mineralogical techniques for fast, automated mineral measurements. A mineral grain finder is described which is easily constructed to fit onto the stage of a standard reflected light ore microscope.The device is most useful in relocating particular grains or mineral associations on 30 mm diameter polished sections. The use of the grain finder in the teaching of ore microscopy is outlined.

During the last 125 years, the steel industry has witnessed revolutionary changes in the process of steelmaking. The Bessemer process was the predominant steel production technology during the last two decades of the 19th century. The open hearth process accounted for the lion's share of world steel production for six decades from 1910 to 1970. With the appearance of the LD process on the industrial stage in 1952, the importance of open hearth process declined and currently the basic oxygen processes are contributing more than 60 per cent of the world steel production. The LD process also led to the development of several other oxygen blown processes such as LDAC, OLP, OBM, QBOP, EOF, Clc.
