The Sand Queen gold mine is a typical Archaean narrow, high-grade gold quartz lode deposit within a shear hosted system. Initial mining during 1904 - 1948 produced 181 659 ounces of gold from 248 564 tonnes of ore milled at an average production grade of 22.7 g/t Au, which equates to a minimum of 750 ounces per vertical metre. The current mining operation is using the old Sand Queen main shaft to access the Sand George deposit, which is a narrow quartz lode system discovered in the same shear structure along strike to the south of the Sand Queen mine workings. Current underground resources contain 360 200 tonnes at a grade of 11.8 g/t Au for 136 500 ounces. Mining is scheduled to produce 20 000 ounces of gold annually. Re-opening of the Sand Queen mine and underground development of the Sand George lodes has revived several grade control issues relevant to a narrow, ænuggettyÆ gold lode mining environment. These include the dependence of assay grade of individual samples upon a number of factors, including how and where a sample is collected, how and where it is analysed, and how grade data is used to estimate an æaverageÆ grade. Ideally, the only way to achieve an acceptable estimate of ætrue gradeÆ is to mine and mill a large parcel of ore (eg >100 tonnes) from each lode or ore type. In a mining operation producing relatively small tonnages from a number of separate ænuggettyÆ gold lodes, availability of resources and operational constraints may preclude intensive sampling for predictive grade control. At the Sand Queen mine, one of the key issues has been to establish a reliable system for estimation of gold grade with which to reconcile milling data. Extensive use has been made of detailed geological data to understand the grade distribution within individual lodes and between lodes, so as not to rely solely on assay results.

The excavation for the Sydney Opera House Parking Station comprises a large donut shaped underground cavern with a central sandstone pillar. The maximum effective roof span is about 19 m and the rock cover is between 7 m and 8 m. Permanent support for the roof and the various services tunnels consists of a combination of tensioned anchors, and untensioned dowels, and mesh with shortcrete and fibrecrete as the final lining. Steel sets were installed at main intersections.Fundamental to the design philosophy for excavation of these spans at such shallow rock cover was the use of monitoring to check on the adequacy of the installed support. Prior to excavation, extensometers, inclinometers, piezometers and surface settlement survey stations were installed. Underground survey stations, anchor load cells and shotcrete pressure cells were installed as excavation proceeded. Excavation commenced at the crown using an initial heading and three widening stages. Geological mapping during excavation confirmed borehole expectations, namely sandstone beds 1 to 4 m thick interbedded with thin shale units. Bedding plane contacts varied over short distances from tight partings to thick brecciated seams. Jointing was subvertical and joints tended to be bed-limited.

The structural pattern of Victoria shows the presence of EW, NW, NE as well as the more readily recognised NNW factors commonly associated with the goldfields. ENE and WNW trends are also present. This structural lattice affects all rocks of the State. Landsat imagery shows that the EW, NW and NE structural elements are closely related spatially to the distribution of Palaeozoic igneous intrusives, Cainozoic volcanic vents as well as all historically important gold mines. It is suggested that the EW, NW and NE structural grid visible on landsat imagery is a reflection of the structure of a mid-crustal layer situated between 3.5 and 17 kms below the surface. The points of intersection of the structural elements of the mid-crustal layer offer most favourable loci for the escape of energy in the form of heat. The correlation between the distribution of igneous plutons, volcanic vents and centres of mineralisation, all reliant on high levels of energy for their formation, indicates the stability of the structures of the mid-crustal layer since early Palaeozoic times. The deep level crustal structures are believed to be, related to the release of stresses placed on the crust since early Palaeozoic times by the rotation of the Earth. A geological model that accommodates the presence of a mid-crustal layer as well as the complexities of the recognised orogenic cycles of southeast Australia is suggested. All 1 000 kg Au reef and deep lead mines fall within 1.5 and 2.5 km respectively of strong linears associated intimately with plutons and volcanic vents. Future exploration of the State is more likely to meet with success if it too is confined to the evaluation of these and similar linears. The mode of mineralisation of any one centre will depend upon the temperature, pressure and geochemical gradients operating on the migrating mineralising fluids as well as the structures in the host rocks. These factors are likely to have varied considerably from one centre of mineralisation to the next and consistency of mineral isation form and depth should not be expected along the length of any single Linear.

Many minerals processing plants need to have greater efficiency in current times and optimise their process performance in order to maintain high profitability. This is even more so in the current economic climate. In the case of large flotation cells, such as TankCell«-300 with over 300 m3 active capacity, ensuring consistent operation and optimal flotation conditions is particularly critical, given the high impact on overall process and throughput of such cells. As there are fewer cells to control and monitor, there is also a lower initial capital cost for instrumentation - the requirements, however, are higher. Despite such compelling reasons, instrumentation and basic control in flotation cells has not changed much in recent years. The standard is still to use traditional feedback (PI algorithm) controls for slurry level and flotation air. A new advanced instrumentation and control package for large flotation cells has recently been developed by Outotec and has been installed at Macraes.In addition to the standard basic instrumentation and control, the new system at Macraes consists of a froth image analysis system, a froth velocity control, and a level control system which utilises adaptive feedforward compensation. There are three TankCell«-300 cells in operation at Macraes since November 2007 and the new control system was commissioned in December 2007.The paper will include comparative data from pre- and postsystem installation and discusses benefits including optimised recovery, improved performance, as well as ease of operation.

At September 2001 the beneficiation plant at BHP Billiton Iron OreÆs Mt Whaleback mine is set to treat 9.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of iron ore, 40 per cent better than original design. This paper describes the steps, decision-making processes and innovations used to increase capacity at minimum cost. The plant was designed in 1979 to operate at 1133 t/h for 6000 hours per annum, treating 6.8 Mtpa. Sufficient suitable contact ore was unavailable and feed was finer than planned. The plant was designed with minimum surge capacity between multiple process units. It had never reached design capacity. In 1993 a study by Fluor Daniel to treat increased tonnage resulted in modifications to improve plant operations. Efforts to expand production by increasing reliability did not achieve the desired capacity. NJ Morrow (Pty) Ltd (NJM) conducted a technical audit in 1996 with process evaluation by Mineral Processors. Replacement of operator interface and PLC logic in 1997 made plant operation and diagnosis easier. Involving operators in logic development enhanced their plant knowledge. Fluor Daniel Simulation developed a simulation model of the process. Mineral Processors and NJM reviewed the model findings, recommended metallurgical improvements and developed preliminary designs and costs. BHP Engineering produced a detailed design with a cost estimate of $A34 million. After analysis and revision of the design, a $A10.4 million upgrade to 8.5 Mtpa was carried out. Detailed modifications to the process units, particularly the HM drum plant, allowed significantly higher capacities and improved metallurgical performance. The target capacity was achieved in June 2001. Further modifications are progressing to treat lower-grade ores.

The need for ventilation around mine workings derives from the various gases found in mine atmospheres and CH4, the principal diluent is in quantity depending upon several factors. Several of these are seam thickness, depth of cover and working method and the French Regulations typify controls on coal mine ventilation. There are many factors affecting production of CH4, in addition to coal production, such as the geological setting of the working seam, the geometry of workings and the rates of advance. The possibilities of spontaneous combustion should not be overlooked. The complexity of high production modern colliery layouts is such that sometimes there maybe 200 airway branches. There are specific differences in ventilation networks between the mining methods of rooms and pillars, shortwalls and longwalls as affecting resistance losses, as well as necessary airflows and ventilating

Adaptive mineral processing has to rely on spatially predicted information on primary geometallurgical parameters, like phase composition, size and shape distributions of grains from various phases, portions of value elements in different grain types. Naively, one would predict these parameters geostatistically and select an optimal processing for the predicted structure. This is suboptimal, due to various kinds of non-linearities in the problem. First, some primary geometallurgical quantities themselves are measured in non-real scales, like compositional or stereologically distorted geometric information. Standard geostatistics has to be replaced by compositional and geometric geostatistics, involving complex transforms and restrictions. Further, only partial and uncertain information is available, introducing a stochastic character to the optimisation problem. Moreover, many response variables leading to costs, outcomes and eventual effects of later processing depend non-linearly on the primary geometallurgical parameters, which implies that the final monetary value is not estimated unbiasedly by kriging. Finally unbiased linear prediction (such as kriging) is not the best method of prediction for decision making. The conditional expectation of the monetary values is needed instead. The impact of these problems is explained in this paper, with simplified examples, and a first approach to a general solution is proposed. Iron formation-hosted iron ore deposits account for the majority of current world iron ore production and consist of three classes: unenriched primary iron formation with typically 25 to 45 wt per cent Fe; martite-goethite ore formed by supergene processes, with abundant hydrous iron oxides containing 60 to 63 wt per cent Fe; and high-grade hematite ores thought to be of hypogene or metamorphic origin overprinted by subsequent supergene enrichment with 60 to 68 wt per cent Fe.Individual iron ore deposits range from a few millions of tonnes to over two billion tonnes at >64 wt per cent Fe, although most are within the range of 200 to 500 Mt. In the Hamersley Province of Western Australia, martite-goethite ores are largely developed in the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, although high (>0.08 per cent P) phosphorous mineralisation is also well developed in the stratigraphically higher Brockman Iron Formation. Whilst the vast majority of high-grade microplaty hematite ore is best developed in the Brockman Iron Formation, this paper provides the first textural evidence of locally significant microplaty hematite mineralisation in the Nammuldi Member of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, in the Chichester Ranges at the Christmas Creek, Cloud Break and Mount Nicholas prospects. Petrographic studies have identified a high-grade Fe texture composed of nanometre scale plates of hematite in mineralised sections of primary microplaty hematite deposits in the Pilbara and elsewhere, well below the normal depth of weathering or dehydration. The population of nanometre to micrometre scale hematite plates is interpreted to represent various stages of nucleation, crystallisation and progressive growth of hematite from the primary ore-forming fluid in areas that were once iron-rich carbonates or silicates in the BIF.

The key concepts relating to the calculation of recoverable reserves for selective mining in open pit gold operations are discussed. While the general concepts are relevant to a wide range of gold ore bodies, their application is specific to particular ore bodies.The important factors contributing to the recoverable reserves aregeology, mining method, dilution, ore loss, sampling methods and theultimate bench height used in production.The implications of current methods of computing recoverable reservesare reviewed and some alternative approaches to recoverable reservecomputation based on production experience are presented.

Pasminco Century MineÆs slurry pipeline was commissioned in November 1999. It currently transports zinc and lead concentrate slurries in batch form to the Port facility, 304 km away in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The Pipeline and the Port have gone through several stages of continuous improvement to match the successful ramp-up of the concentrator. Improvements in the Pipeline and Port Operations have included: commissioning of the first slurry pipeline that delivers two products in the same pipeline in batch mode; management of batches throughout the pipeline and port system to minimise cross contamination of both concentrates; operation of the slurry pipeline to achieve high availability of the system; operation of the pump station interfaced with preventive maintenance to minimise unplanned shutdowns; continuous monitoring of pressures throughout the single-station, 304 km slurry pipeline; redesign of the Rotary screw feeder; redesign of the Dryer Control System; installation of a larger Induced Draft Fan; optimisation of the dryer internals to achieve a product of narrow size distribution and pellet integrity; redesign of the stockpile ventilation system; and the development of a surface sealant. This paper describes the early commissioning of both the Port and the Pipeline and the continuous learning and Quality Improvement Project initiated at the Port to focus on concentrate quality given the propensity of the fine concentrate to self-heat during storage.

The CIP process for gold recovery has enjoyed widespread application in most gold-producing countries. The development of a mathematical model of the CIP process has value for use in process design, process optimisation, and process control. Mathematical model development through laboratory experimentation is an important step in the design and optimisation of the CIP process. For this purpose, data has been generated through small scale laboratory leaching and adsorption tests both in batch and continuous mode. This test program has been carried out on specific ores of various types prior to the application of the models to production CIP plants utilising these ores. The applicability of leaching models derived from batch experiments was tested in a continuous five stage CIP pilot plant. The models were then adapted to scale-up the batch to the small scale continuous operation.

The Dampier Port Upgrade Project (DPU) involves an upgrade to Hamersley IronÆs Parker Point iron ore port facility at Dampier, Western Australia. The $US700 million DPU Project will increase Hamersley IronÆs shipping capacity at Dampier from 72 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) to 116 Mtpa. The DPU Project comprises a new car dumper facility and rail spur, an upgrade to the existing stockyard and conveying system, a new screen-house and a 450 m wharf extension with two new shipping berths and a new ship-loader. This paper discusses the innovative design and construction of the new car dumper facility, which is capable of automatically unloading 240 car iron ore trains at a rate of 10 000 t/h. The facility design is unique compared to more conventional designs currently in operation, and greatly improves operation and maintenance functions.

The Bendigo Goldfield is AustraliaÆs second largest goldfield, having produced 22 million ounces of gold between 1851 and 1954. Development of the modern decline mine, initially for underground exploration and bulk sampling, commenced in 1998. The project is targeting new reefs below and along from historic workings beneath the city of Bendigo. The major technical challenge for the project is the inability to solely use drill core gold assays to estimate the grade of reefs, due to the coarsegrained nature of gold mineralisation, known as the nugget effect. In 2002, a program of bulk sampling commenced, resulting in the development of factors for converting drill hole grades to in situ reef grades. In mid 2006 commercial production commenced following the construction of a 600 000 t/yr processing plant adjacent to the Kangaroo Flat Mine portal, with plant feed being derived from four reefs in the Sheepshead and Deborah lines of reef. In early 2007 it became clear that the initial ore reserves had been overestimated, leading to an immediate change of strategy from production to exploration. A cash conservation program was also put in place. Exploration refocused onto the more historically productive Garden Gully and New Chum lines of reef, whilst a new grade estimation tool based primarily on the visual assessment of drill core was implemented. Immediate exploration success occurred with the discovery of four reefs in the Garden Gully line in early 2007. Successful step-out drilling during the year led to the decision to undertake trial mining in Gill reef. Trial production commenced in June 2008 and includes the processing of discrete ore blocks and the introduction of selective mining techniques. This paper examines the steps that have been taken to refocus exploration and to gain confidence in new exploration results, particularly through the visual grade estimation technique and assessment of trial mining Gill reef on the Garden Gully line. In addition, project factors relating to human skills, community relationships and financial management in a dynamic external environment are also addressed.

Block caving is the most economic underground methods for excavating massive orebodies, due to the high productivity and low production costs. The success of block caving operations depends on the fragmentation and draw control as large blocks decrease the equipment efficiency, inhibit the material flow and may lead to expensive secondary blasting. Even though ore handling system design, as well as overall economic results, both critically rely on secondary fragmentation, this parameter continues to be one of the least understood issues in the caving operations.This research focuses on the experimental study of secondary fragmentation, considering the impact of vertical pressures and material flow. Experiments using a load-haul-dump extraction system were conducted under laboratory conditions to quantify the influence of pressure and particle size on secondary fragmentation. Results demonstrate that increasing the vertical pressure (simulating deeper conditions) leads to higher fragmentation (smaller particle size) and greater fines generation during draw. The experimental results were applied to calibrate the developed mathematical model based on kinetic matrix. The acceptable accordance between the comminution model results and the reality showed that this method is convenient in predicting the secondary fragmentation in block caving.CITATION:Castro, R, Gómez, R, Casali, A and Hekmat, A, 2016. The twin iron ore islands of Cockatoo and Koolan are located in the spectacular setting of Buccaneer Archipelago off the Kimberley coastline of WA.Cessation of ore shipments from Koolan in 1993 ended 42 years of continuous mining activity which began with the first shipment of ore from Cockatoo in 1951.

At 11 p.m. on Tuesday, 24th July 1979, an explosion of methane gas in a three heading development panel at Appin Colliery resulted in the deaths of fourteen men. The explosion followed after or was asso- ciated with a changeover of the ventilation to achieve a central intake between two returns. Investigation by Inspectors was followed by separate Judicial and Coronial Inquiries. Investigational information aimed at understanding the circumstances of the ex- plosion was prepared for the Inquiries. Recommendations following the Judicial Inquiry have been adopted by the Department of Mineral Resources.

The occurrence of coarse gold particles leading to grade complexity and sampling challenges is a common feature of many gold deposits. Poorly designed sampling protocols applied to these deposit types can lead to an excessively high fundamental sampling error. Together with other errors, the fundamental sampling error contributes to the nugget effect. Proper sample collection, preparation and assay protocols are required to minimise this error, and hence reduce the total nugget effect. Reduction of the nugget effect is a key requirement for subsequent geostatistical resource estimates to be effective. A case study from the Nalunaq gold mine in Greenland is presented, which is characterised by notable quantities of coarse gold (>30 per cent +100 ¦m gold) hosted in quartz veins. Diamond drilling provides a good measure of gross geological continuity at practical grid spacings, but is not considered to represent the mineralisation effectively. On-reef development with face and bulk sampling, together with detailed geological studies were undertaken during the resource delineation phase. This contribution describes the nature of the Nalunaq deposit, its gold particle size characteristics, how sampling and assay protocols were developed (including QA/QC issues), application of GyÆs sampling theory and its calibration, and how the data was subsequently applied to grade estimation.

It was demonstrated that the stable propagation of the explosive process is possible in low-density emulsion explosives (EEs) obtained through mixing of emulsion with a significant amount of expanded polystyrene (or other similar) granules. Such a process takes place in the form of a detonation-like wave of emulsion drops in explosive gas streams flowing out of the high-pressure area of the reaction zone.Chemical reaction in such EEs takes place in the form of surface combustion of emulsion particles interacting with the gas stream.A method was developed for determining parameters of decomposition of low-density EEs, and it was demonstrated that a gradual pressure increase takes place in products during the explosion of such EEs.The performed analytical research allowed low-density EEs (obtained through mixing of emulsion with a significant amount of expanded polystyrene) to be recommended for smooth blasting.Industrial-experimental blasts at quarries of Ural and Siberia, with extreme positioning of sides and using low-density EEs, have confirmed the viability of the recommendations given.The obtained results are useful in the advancement of smooth blasting technology using low-density EEs.CITATION:Gorinov, S A and Maslov, I Y, 2015. The Tarnagulla Gold Project in Central Victoria, Australia, was developed and operated by Reef Mining NL between 1994 and early 2000, producing 53 000 ounces of gold from the Nick OÆTime Shoot, a single narrow vein shoot structure within part of the larger Poverty Reef, with a strike length ranging from 30 m to 60 m. The ore shoot was developed over a vertical interval of 190 m, using a small cross-section decline and small, mechanised equipment. Various stoping methods were employed including mechanised cut-and-fill with a single boom jumbo, hand-held mining using airleg drills and rope scrapers, and small uphole retreat stopes using a line of sight remote operated LHD to recover a crown pillar. Experience during stoping showed that airleg drilling and rope scrapers gave much better dilution control than diesel equipment. Innovations included a low-cost hydraulic fill system. Due to the small scale of the deposit, the feasibility studies, planning and permitting for the mine were based on very limited drilling information; however, the mine was brought into production within two years of the discovery. While the mine made an operating profit, it failed to fully repay capital at the low gold price then prevailing. Applying the lessons learned from the operation to optimise the access and stoping method, the project is re-examined at todayÆs gold price and operating costs. Central Victoria has the potential to host many similar small deposits. The authors were respectively Non-Executive Director and Resident Manager for Reef Mining NL when the mine was operating.

The low price of nickel which has prevailed since 1982 has dictated that unit production costs must be minimised. Early in the crisis, a decision was made within Western Mining Corporation to reduce unit costs by increased rates of production, not by a significant reduction in manpower. This paper details developments which have taken place at Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter to enable the higher production rates to be achieved, or to increase energy efficiency. It is significant that most developments were achieved without the need for capital expenditure.
