Fimiston Open Pit is operated by Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) as a joint venture between Barrick Gold and Newmont Mining. Over 110 years of underground mining resulted in the development of nearly 3500 km of underground workings including backfilled and open stopes up to half a million tonnes in size. These voids significantly complicate blasting processes at KCGM, influencing blast movement direction and magnitude. Blast movement monitoring to improve mine reconciliations was identified as an improvement project in the business plan for the geology team in 2008. Following successful trials in 2008 to 2009, blast monitoring and translation of ore blocks were implemented as a permanent grade control program from late 2009 and is now part of the Management Operating System (MOS) of the mine. This paper presents a summary of results from the Blast Movement Monitoring (BMM®) data collected to date. Ore blocks at KCGM are translated primarily using BMM® data. This data is obtained from the BMM® system which measures the movement of a radio transmitter installed in a blast pattern from a preblast position to a post-blast position. The application of the data collected by the BMM® tends to be both mine site and blast specific. At KCGM, an average distance obtained from the BMM® data within a given shot is the primary method used for translation. In the case that BMM® data is unavailable, a theoretical movement vector established from Orica Shotplus with distances gained from the historical BMM® database is used. Data is presented in an ore loss and dilution exercise for a bench undertaken at KCGM to understand the potential effects on reconciliations. Improvements that have flowed from implementing blast monitoring include improved reconciliations when combined with other grade control improvement projects. The increase in liaison between the geology and blast personnel at KCGM has been a significant improvement gained from the implementation of the blast monitoring program. This has allowed a better understanding of blast movement and the effects on ore dilution and ore loss by the mine geology team. In addition, the discussion of blasting tie-in plans between geology and blasting personnel has been improved which leads to more favourable blasting practices that take ore movement into account.

Addressing community concerns in relation to an economic activity, particularly when it causes significant community impacts, is especially important for the development of extractive industry projects. Pipelines comprise an integral part of many hydrocarbon developments, which may cause different effects on local economic development, communities and the environment compared with open cast mines. This paper explores community impacts associated with a case study of the oil pipeline æEastern Siberia-Pacific OceanÆ in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia. Based on semi-structured interviews, conducted in 2006 - 2008 in Russia, the paper investigates claims of local communities about potential impacts of the pipeline development of their environments and economic activities as well as community claims for greater involvement in sharing the benefits from this major infrastructure project. A community of Indigenous people, Evenk, is likely to be most profoundly affected by the development due to impacts on their traditional activities such as hunting and reindeer herding. The paper examines in detail the regional economic, social, environmental and Indigenous peoples concerns over the construction of the oil pipeline and investigates actions and methods adopted by community organisations to voice their concerns about the pipeline development. Finally, the paper assesses the process of interaction between the pipeline developers and regional stakeholders.

In late 2014 the Flinders Power Management Team was executing business improvement plans to ensure continued electricity generation until 2028 and beyond. Six months later, in June 2015, the Board announced the closure of the Flinders Power South Australian business, including the Leigh Creek Coal Mine, the Northern and Playford Power Stations located at Port Augusta and the 250km railway line. The announcement was preceded by a brief period of internal planning. A date was soon set for ceasing coal mining operations, being November 2015. The mine is unique in many ways. Located approximately 550km north of Adelaide the site has over 100 years of history and was formerly operated by the South Australian Government. Privatisation in 2000 saw the mine continue operation under Perpetual Leases from the South Australian Government. The leases included exemptions from multiple sections of the Mining Act 1971, obliging primary regulation under the Mines and Works Inspection Act 1920. The coal, being a low rank sub-bituminous brown coal, is prone to self-heating and spontaneous combustion. The mine and company town Leigh Creek were the economic and cultural heartbeat of the community. Facilities at the mine were shared by the community and vice versa. While many mines across Australia and the world enter periods of care and maintenance, few have been actively closed to the point of relinquishment (Bennett and Lacy, 2016). A swift decision to close, followed by a short mining operations shutdown period, presented significant technical and regulatory challenges for both the mine operator and for Regulators. The subsequent joint risk mapping process employed by Flinders Power and South Australian Mining Regulators was a unique real-world example of collaborative mine closure planning and execution. Lessons learnt are valuable for all mines, production facilities and for Regulators, even for those who may wrongly assume that closure is many years away. CITATION:Williams, B and Querzoli, A, 2018. Mechanically coupled rock bolts encapsulated in cementitious or polyester cartridge resin grouts have been widely adopted for various underground rock reinforcement applications. Resin grouts are considered a superior product, however, both systems have their advantages and limitations, with the relative performance, quality installation cost and cycle time as the most notable parameters. Both applications have optimal rock bolt combinations and preferred ground conditions. Cementitious grouts are favourable for use with secondary deep embedment anchors. These are installed using various equipment with a series of autonomous tasks required to complete the installation cycle. The cartridge resin system can be utilised by a bolting or face boring rock drill to complete the full support installation cycle. This reduction in equipment changeouts mid-cycle generally deems it the more practical application and popular choice for primary support. Self-drilling anchors (SDAs) and hollow bolts have been a viable alternative to traditional rock reinforcement in variable and challenging ground conditions. Using a pumpable post installation grouting system, SDAs have proven to aid the quality of installation, but due to the additional equipment and cycle steps associated with application, the cycle time is increased. In recent years, fully mechanised bolting equipment designed to utilise a combination of self-drilling anchors and a thixotropic pumpable resin installed in a single pass has entered the market. This innovation is anticipated to deliver the advantages described above, with fewer limitations, and significantly improved development and rehabilitation rates. St Barbara Mining and Byrnecut Australia, supported by Master Builders Solutions, were first to conduct extensive trials and implement this rock bolting approach in an Australian hard rock underground mine and record the actual performance.

The Kiirunavaara mine is a large-scale (28 Mt/a) iron ore mine located in northern Sweden. The mine is owned and operated by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB) using sublevel caving (SLC). The SLC area underlies an open pit decommissioned in the 1950s, the current main SLC haulage level is situated at an depth of 1100 m. The main orebody dips 60 degrees to the east with a distinct boundary defining the hanging wall to the east and footwall to the west. Since the 1980s damage has been observed both in the footwall rock mass as well as on the footwall crest of the open pit. Recent investigations indicate that the underground footwall damage is primarily controlled by large-scale slope failure mechanisms. Structurally controlled near-vertical planar shear failures in the upper footwall appear to be driven or facilitated by a step-path like curved shear failure situated in a zone starting ca 250 m, and intersecting the SLC about 100 m above the active mining level. To confirm this failure evolution a pilot underground measuring system has been designed and installed to monitor the expected rock mass displacements indicated by numerical models based on the above mechanisms. The systems consists of 50 m time domain reflectometry (TDR) coaxial cables installed in the footwall both across and away from an estimated damage extent boundary to monitor shear movements along natural joint surfaces. The TDR installation is combined with long extensometers to facilitate differentiation between diffuse shear and rock mass normal expansion. Additionally, a low-tech system of tape extensometer lines are installed in drifts and stopes running perpendicular to the ore strike to monitor horizontal displacements in the infrastructure as the footwall ‘slope’ loses confinement during mining advance when the mined out areas are replaced by caved rock from the hanging wall.CITATION:Svartsjaern, M, Saiang, D and Mäkitaavola, K, 2016. The current work deals with the measurement of some thermophysical properties of Ca(NO3)2 based ternary nitrate molten salts as HTF (heat transfer fluid) / TES (Thermal Energy Storage) material for CSP (Concentrating solar power) plants. The density and viscosity of different compositions of the ternary salt mixture containing Ca(NO3)2, NaNO3 and KNO3 close to the liquidus has been experimentally measured. An attempt has also been made to measure the melting point of the salt using the cooling curve technique as well as Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Thermogravimetric analysis has also been performed to estimate the peak operating temperature of the salt. Compatibility of suitable pipe material (SS304) with molten salt has also been discussed. The salt mixture proves to be a viable alternative to the already existing HTFs like Therminol VP-1 (organic oil) or Solar Salt® in regards to its lower melting point, wider operating range, low cost, nontoxicity, sufficiently high density and comparable viscosity.

Morning Star Gold aims to enter the ranks of Australia's gold producers, revitalising the Eastern Victorian Goldfi elds in the second half of 2010 - the fi rst gold production in around 50 years from the Morning Star Gold mine, which was once Australia's largest under WMC. This presentation will outline the redevelopment of the Morning Star Gold Mine from exploration to production. Morning Star Gold NL's (MCO) key project area is centred at the historic mining town of Woods Point and nearby Matlock (to the southeast) and Gaffney's Creek (to the northwest), all of which are located in the lower part of the Victorian Alps roughly 60 kms south of Mansfield. Morning Star has literally numerous historic mines and gold bearing 'dykes' on its tenements, many with a rich production history of high-grade gold from quartz reefs and alluvial sources. The area encompassing the Woods Point goldfi eld and the multiple high-grade gold bearing dyke structures located north towards Jamieson and south towards Walhalla formed one of the most significant mining fields in Australian history. Historical gold production was at least 155 t or around six million ounces of over a century of mining with an average production grade exceeding 27 g per tonne. The bulk of this recorded production came from just a handful of mines and of those only three were mined to any great depth. One of the key historical production hubs in this area was the famous 'Morning Star' mine, which is situated adjacent to Woods Point township. The Morning Star mine produced almost one million ounces at 27 grams per tonne, operating fairly continuously between 1861 and 1959 with a break after Jan 1939 due to the devastating 'Black Friday' bush fi res across eastern Victoria. During the early 1940s, the Morning Star was Australia's biggest gold mine. The Morning Star mine along with Walhalla ensured that this goldfield was third behind Bendigo and Ballarat as Victoria's biggest hardrock gold production centre. Morning Star Gold has rebuilt its 100 per cent owned 'Morning Star' mine with a view to producing gold in the second half of 2010. Morning Star is exploring its regional dykes in order to estimate an overall gold endowment and rank local production sources to feed its proposed mill at the Morning Star mine site. Key initial targets (all within 11 kms of the Morning Star mine) are the Waverly, All Nations, Rose of Denmark, Hunts, Wallaby and Loch Fyne dykes, all of which historically produced high grade gold, much of it gained from only shallow workings above the water table in the weathered zone of rocks. Historically the Morning Star mine was developed over 24 levels to a depth of 940 m via one large vertical shaft and a smaller, deeper inclined shaft at the 1900 feet level underground. At present MCO has dewatered and completely refurbished all infrastructure to the ten level (~310 m below surface). MCO knows there are a number of substantially under-explored and undeveloped or partially developed but not stoped areas within the Morning Star mine. As a result, MCO has been carrying out extensive channel sampling and an underground diamond drilling program targeting areas of the mine that were largely unexplored and undeveloped by the last operators of the mine - Western Mining Corp Ltd (Gold Mines of Australia). Four thousand, fi ve hundred pages of archival WMC records have helped the cause significantly. The shaft refurbishment and reconstruction stage is complete. This has been a program that originally commenced back in 1993 and has cost around $22 M. This refurbishment paved the way for the extensive underground resource focused diamond drilling program, which MCO completed in 2008 with two company-owned and operated drill rigs from drill cuddies on level 9 (900 feet underground) of the mine. This drilling, which encountered some stunning grades intersections and multiple visible gold hits, has outlined further production opportunities including 0.4 m @ 1392 g/t Au (MS 410). Metallurgical testing conducted by Gekko Systems of samples obtained from the exploration program found gravity concentration and a leach circuit gave recoveries of ~95 per cent to 99 per cent, or ~92 per cent from gravity alone at a coarse crush (300 ¦m). Currently, the plan is to use gravity to fi rstly produce dore bars on-site from the free milling gold and secondly a saleable concentrate for CIL processing off-site. A purpose built 10 t/h (~80 000 t/a) gravity treatment plant was subsequently ordered from Gekko and is expected to be installed onsite and commissioned in the Q3 2010. The plant features fi ne crushing with a vertical shaft impactor, followed by gold concentration by inline pressure jig, inline spinner and Wilfley table. This is an ABSTRACT ONLY. Efficient pre-concentration using natural and induced deportment starts with effective blast design. Leveraging these characteristics using Size-Based Grade Engineering® techniques requires detailed understanding and measurement of the particle size distribution (PSD) of the Run of Mine (ROM) ore. In turn, blasts must be designed to optimise fragmentation for the pre-concentration method. To be successful, fragmentation outcomes must be predicted and measured as part of the blast design process to account for the response ranking of the rock mass. The upgrade achieved using Size-Based Grade Engineering® methodologies will rely on the proportion of feed that reports to the screen undersize, so particle size distribution of the feed stock is of paramount importance if the potential benefits are to be achieved and maintained. Measuring actual fragmentation in the ROM ore and comparing with predictions allows the modification of subsequent blast designs to optimise fragmentation for pre-concentration scenarios. Automating this process can deliver significant increases in productivity and mine site profits. This paper discusses the importance fragmentation plays in Size-Based Grade Engineering® and explores technologies and methodologies used to measure it, consistently ensuring the best outcomes.

Best practice standards generally recommend assessment of the environmental and societal risks posed by tailings storage facilities, but they rarely specify how the analysis should be made. As a case study, this paper describes a safety assessment of the Zelazny Most tailings pond operated by the Hydrotechnical Unit of KGHM Polska Miedz SA in Poland. The complete assessment includes a failure mode effect criticality analysis (FMECA) that considers all conceivable failure modes, but this paper focuses on one key mode, the loss of stability during the planned raising of the crest above its current level. Reliability against static dam failure considers uncertainty on the safety factor in a limit equilibrium approach. The threat of dynamic (earthquake induced) instability is assessed by developing a model of future seismicity as a function of the mining plan and considering uncertainty on the induced permanent displacements along critical sliding surfaces. We quantify the additional level of protection against outflow provided by the beach using an event tree with expert-assigned probabilities. Continuous monitoring of the dam for premonitory signs of instability and a set of loss-prevention plans in the case of a spill provide additional layers of protection; their effectiveness is quantified by estimating the fraction of the population that could be evacuated as a function of warning time. The probabilistic analysis indicates that the safety targets are met and produces practical recommendations on how to maintain and improve the safety level while the dam crest is raised above its current level.CITATION:Van Dyck, J, Pytel, W, Veneziano, D, Snow, R and Zanoli, O, 2015. Global iron ore demand, sparked by ChinaÆs rapid industrialisation and emergence as the worldÆs newest steel market, has seen iron ore groups investing heavily in production capacity as well as infrastructure. The success of these new projects depends heavily on reliability, competitiveness and quality control in an increasingly demanding trading environment. Furthermore, the iron ore industry continues to improve its competitiveness in mining practices, technology innovation and management processes. The continued fine tuning of these sectors will be critical to the success of the industry in the years ahead, and this mining sector will continue to demand process improvements from their service suppliers to maintain competitiveness. Automation offers a real solution to these demands. A crucial quality control element in mining, beneficiation, stockpiling and shipping stages is ensuring representative samples of ore are taken along each step of the process. When these samples reach the laboratory it is imperative that the sample is representative of the entire stream and that no induced errors occur. Examples of automation start with mechanical primary and secondary samplers in the run-of-mine processes through to sample tower and laboratory crushers, dividers and collectors. Automation is widely used in many forms to provide reliable and repeatable samples for analysis whilst providing a safer working environment. Laboratory automation systems in use today vary from simple linear systems to sophisticated robotic cells. Sample automation in the iron ore industry has resulted in many benefits for both producers and their customers. The most significant benefits have come in the form of higher safety standards whilst reducing sample error, sample handling and sample contamination during collection. These benefits have been further augmented by reliability and repeatability of automating the final sample preparation and analysis stage. Today these benefits are reflected in reduced costs of sampling and improvement in both turnaround time and quality of results, whilst complying with Australian safety and ISO sampling standards.

This paper presents the evolution of the studies and strategic plans to extend the life of operations at the Savage River iron ore project in north-western Tasmania. The current Life-of-Mine (LOM) plan for the Savage River operations is based on a series of open pits. Drilling has confirmed high-grade extensions of the magnetite resource at depths that exceed practical limits for open pit mining. Grange Resources Limited, the owner of the operation, is investigating underground options – not only to extend the LOM plan but also to maintain peak production at a reduced operating cost while reducing greenhouse gas emissions into the future. What makes this project unique is that it requires introducing a productive and cost-effective mining method to exploit a challenging geotechnical and geometrical orebody in an area of high rainfall. To support the study efforts, the development of an exploration decline, underground drilling programs, and an exploratory drive excavated into the orebody for geotechnical investigation was key to providing the necessary data for a pre-feasibility study (PFS). This paper describes the pragmatic approach and processes to developing the underground mining options study through data collection and then integrating these options into the open pit plans to optimise an overall strategic plan for the Savage River operations. The learnings for operators from this experience are how the technical and pragmatic approaches were aligned to develop the strategic plans, and the importance of timely investment in gathering the necessary data.

"Most new mining projects require an initial assessment of the locations and volumes of potential acid forming (PAF) waste that is likely to be moved and dumped in surface waste stockpiles. This requires sampling of the waste rock zones and submitting the samples for a series of tests. Key to the outcome of the waste characterisation process is obtaining sufficient samples that are representative of the various rock types both in number and spatial distribution.Various regulatory bodies throughout Australia and the rest of the world are currently struggling with how to define minimum amounts of sampling to achieve realistic estimates without imposing excessive costs and time constraints on a project.This paper addresses two aspects of the process: what constitutes a æsufficientÆ number of samples how to use those samples in determining volumes of likely PAF material.Geostatistical methods of characterising orebodies with large numbers of samples are routinely used in the mining industry by geologists and geostatisticians to estimate and classify Mineral Resources. In theory exactly the same methods can be used to estimate PAF waste locations and volumes.In practice the number and spatial distribution of dedicated PAF waste samples at feasibility stage is typically so small that it is almost impossible to estimate the spatial distribution of PAF material with any degree of confidence at all. Consequently, the common approach is to characterise a few samples from a lithological unit and then assume that they represent the unit as a whole. The Newmont Waihi Operations are centred on the Martha mine at Waihi, New Zealand. The mine has produced over 6.6 million ounces of gold from both openpit and underground sources since operations began in 1878. The current open pit operations commenced in 1988 and in the year to 30 June 2002 produced 129,790 ounces of gold at a cash cost of USD122 per ounce. This paper provides an overview of current operations and future directions.

Underground contractors in the mining industry must be prepared to take a position at the forefront of innovation of equipment and work methods in order to maintain a competitive advantage over in-house operations and remain relevant. Innovative concepts such as split-feed development jumbos, high capacity trucks and loader guidance systems were implemented by contractors to stay ahead of ‘the pack’. All of these are now common across the industry.The demands of regular participation in competitive tendering coupled with aggressive fleet depreciation, means contractors tend to have more communication and opportunities to work with equipment suppliers than mine owners. Therefore, they are more likely to influence equipment design and product directions. They also have a unique opportunity to assist in trialling new concepts and technologies across a wide variety of operating conditions rather than being restricted to one mine.In addition, as a ‘guest’ on a mine site, mining contractors do not have the luxury of creating the environment for their preferred systems, rather they must have the capacity to adapt their technology to suit the offered environment at a particular mine. This leads to a pursuit of adaptive technologies that can be implemented selectively and seamlessly without excessive disturbance rather than ‘all-of-mine’ systems. These incremental innovations then become available for use across the mining industry where they can add value as ‘bolt-on systems’ to existing operations.Mining contractors, therefore, act as the bellwether for industry practices and equipment. However, in order to maintain their position they must engage industry stakeholders to deliver practical, innovative and cost-effective technologies that add value and result in an improved bottom line for all. The Republic of Uganda aims to exploit its’ significant, un-developed iron ore resources to supply the required raw material for developing its’ iron and steel industry across all the stages of the supply chain. Large prospects of iron ore exists in Uganda in the eastern (Tororo) regions and southwestern (Kisoro-Kabale) regions of the country. The Kisoro-Kabale iron ore projects covers mineralisation in hematitic banded iron formation (itabirite) in the north-eastern Congo-Tanzania Craton; covering ten Iron ore prospects. The prospects include Kamena, Karukara, Nyamiringa, Kyanyamuzinda, Rugando, Katagata, Rwengongo, Kijuguta, Kihumuro and Katuna. High-grade hematite ore prospects in south-western Uganda have known grades ranging from 55 per cent to 68 per cent iron ore content with an exploration target estimated at over 500 million tonne (Mt). Small scale production of iron ore from the south-western regions provide raw material to existing steelmaking and direct reduction iron ore plants located in the Jinja and Iganga districts of eastern Uganda. Large quantities of iron ore and other steelmaking raw material, however, are required to be imported into Uganda due to the limited exploration and development of their own iron ore mining operations. A joint collaboration between the European Union (EU), the Department of the Geological Survey and Mines (DGSM), Ugandan Ministry of Mines in partnership with Australian drilling and mining consultancies, ADT Africa and Kalem Group as a EU funded project was undertaken during November 2022 and September 2023. Exploration and evaluation of the ten iron ore prospects in south-western Uganda was undertaken through geological mapping, drilling, assaying, and technical studies with the view to attract investment for the development of Uganda iron ore mining and steelmaking industry. The collaboration developed mineral exploration policy, guidelines and standards, an iron ore exploration manual, a geological data management policy, and to support the sustainable development of iron ore mining in Uganda through building the capacity of local Ugandan geology and mining personnel through the transfer of knowledge and expertise from experienced iron ore experts. The quantification of these resources is an important first step in assessing their economic potential and attracting mining investors. This paper presents an overview of the investigation program and the preliminary results as an important first step in attracting mining investors to this exciting new iron ore province.

Leightons is the sole contractor at the Wahana Coal Mine Project (part of the Bayan Group), a multi-seam thermal deposit consisting of 13 coal seams with thicknesses ranging from 20 cm to 500 cm. The average dip of the deposit is 18 - 20°. However the deposit is heavily faulted in certain domains with anticlinal and synclinal structures present causing seams to dip up to 90°. Average thickness of coal inter-burdens range from less than 2 to 12 m. The minimum coal thickness being mined is 20 cm. Coal production is direct mine mouth feed and there is no coal processing plant currently used.Conventional blasting between the highly variable coal horizons in the early phases of the mine life was suboptimal from a production perspective. Drilling short holes with a reduced drill pattern, and on occasions with sloping benches, resulted in low drilling and explosives loading efficiency.A high frequency of small size blasts fired up to two times daily was required with each blast consisting of four up to five small blast areas. Each blast averaged approximately 36 000 bcm thus causing a low utilisation rate of the mining fleet from frequent blast delays and the inability to deploy larger Liebherr 9350 excavators on bench. It was identified that increasing the production targets required a more efficient drilling and blasting process. Furthermore, due to the highly variable nature of the deposit, the existing coal model was determined to not be able to accurately predict the coal seam location prior to blasthole drilling.In August 2009, Leighton Contractors Indonesia and Orica Mining Services with the full support of the Wahana team, initiated through seam blasting trials using electronic blasting systems. Further trials were conducted in November 2009. Trial evaluations indicated that the benefits from decreased lost time events due to blasting, an increased vertical advance rate per blast, and increased overall blast size could be attained while not damaging or diluting coal.Full-scale?through seam blasting has been ongoing since February 2010 for the upper eight coal seams to extract coal seam thicknesses ranging from 20 - 100 cm. This paper will discuss the parameters of the through seam blasting process in Wahana and the resulting benefits to the overall mine production.

The Sally Malay Project is located 120 km north of Halls Creek in the eastern Kimberley region. Since commissioning, ongoing improvements on the plant have resulted in recoveries now greatly exceeding the initial design targets. The continual optimisation endeavours of the Sally Malay metallurgy department included an automation project that was done in close collaboration with Mintek. In this team effort, several problem areas were addressed and the FloatStar advance control system was successfully commissioned to stabilise and optimise the flotation circuit. The remote location of the Kimberley Nickel Mines operation, fly-in, fly-out roster and the current mining boom makes the acquisition of experienced flotation staff difficult. The implementation of an automated flotation control system reduces this burden and contributes to the training of inexperienced staff. This paper illustrates not only the process control improvements achieved as a result of the installation of the FloatStarÖ advanced control system, but also how it has assisted operational personnel with their understanding of the process.

Driven by an increasing need for water conservation, coal mine operators in the upper Isaac River catchment have placed significant emphasis upon the reuse of water. This initiative led to an overall increase in the salinity of mine waters. The ionic composition of this water differs from local stream water in that concentrations of sulfate are higher than average stream concentrations by ten per cent, while concentrations of bicarbonate and calcium are lower. When this water is discharged into ephemeral streams in semi-arid environments there is potential for this increased salinity and altered ionic composition to impact upon the ecosystem processes mediated by micro-organisms in river sediments.We have measured nitrification, denitrification and methanogenesis rates in a series of lab experiments using sediments from Isaac River catchment streams and found that salinity affects these processes in different ways and to different degrees. Process rates were shown to differ seasonally between samples taken from the same location and habitat type and also between different habitat types at the same time and location. Both aerobic and anaerobic process rates were higher in surface sediments and it is likely that this activity is associated with surface biofilms. Furthermore, we have shown that the ecosystem processes we have measured are limited by the availability of carbon in the sediments.The management implications of these findings for mine releases into ephemeral streams will be discussed.CITATION:Kerr, J L, Vink, S and Beyer-Robson, J, 2013. An essential component to the management of any process is the measurement of key parameters, used to monitor, control, and provide the feedback necessary for improvement. This paper discusses how data collection and analysis can provide a better understanding of the blasting process, as well as additional control and improved outcomes.The drill and blast process involves the generation and use of information at a number of levels. Comparison of historical parameters and results provides a starting point for the development of ongoing blast designs and a baseline against which future results can be compared. The collection of data during implementation provides a quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) function where potential defects (such as under-drilled or over-charged holes) can be rectified prior to firing. Actual quantities and production rates allow the development of realistic plans and schedules, rather than using inaccurate estimates and targets that lead to unscheduled changes to equipment paths. Over?the past several years there have been a number of technological advances in data collection technology. Drill monitoring instrumentation on blasthole drills provides location information and feedback on rock properties as drilling occurs. Hand held ‘data logger’ technology has also overcome the challenges of working on the bench, such that blasthole measurements can be collected and forwarded directly to the explosive truck. Mine sites are becoming wireless network-enabled allowing the seamless data transfer from the field back to the office, in near real time, as that information is collected. Great strides have also been made in the development of drill and blast software systems which are more user friendly, and yet provide far greater capability to manage the quantity of data generated. The blasting process is critical to the overall mining process and the delivery of a successful blast outcome requires that the blasting process be ‘in control’. The measurement of key parameters can provide the data with which to measure and maintain control of blasting, and allows the validation of performance improvement measures and identification of improvement opportunities.
