During the last 25 years, multistage mixer-settlers have been used extensively for liquid ion exchange work. The mixer-settler has the advantage of being a compact device in which a large number of stages can be assembled in a relatively small area. They are particularly advantageous for the separation of rare earths. Most of the adjacent rare earths have separation factors which are near one, which means that a large number of stages are needed to produce a good separation. When two elements (m, n) are extracted simultaneously, the separation factor (ßm, n) is defined as: [ ] where Ym, Yn are the molarities of the respective elements in the organic phase and Xm, Xn, are their molarities in the aqueous phase at equilibrium. The industrial consumption of rare earth oxides rose to over 6800 tons in 1968, an increase of 33% over 1967.1 The increased production and demand for rare earth and lanthanum chlorides for petroleum cracking catalysts was one of the principal factors in this increased consumption of rare earths. In 1968 approximately 59% of the rare earth oxides produced were used for gasoline cracking catalysts in the form of rare earth and lanthanum chlorides. There was also an increase in the sales of lanthanum oxides for use in optical lenses and in fiber optics. The future looks good for the rare earth industry. The rare earths can be expected to be used in many new products which are being developed. Until the late 1950's tributyl phosphate (TBP) was the principal solvent used in rare earth liquid ion exchange. In 1957 Peppard3 reported the use of di (2-ethyl-hexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) as a solvent for separating the rare earths. Magnesium and its alloys have long been characterized as possessing limited capacity for mechanical forming at atmospheric temperatures prior to rupturing despite their outstanding performances in this respect at elevated temperatures. Responsible for this behavior are the fundamental facts that these hexagonal-type metals have comparatively few slip elements at low temperatures for any extensive deformation and that, at high temperatures, additional slip elements become operative, thus enhancing greater plasticity under strain. The transitionai point has been set at 2 25°C by Schmidl for single crystals, and at 250°C by Morel1 and Hanawalt² for extruded magnesium metal. In a recent X-ray investigation on poly-crystalline magnesium-alloy sheets, Barrett and Haller3 have revealed that, below the transitional tempelature, the initial plastic deformation proceeds mostly by a twinning action; that, above such a temperature, the action is mostly by slip. The deep-drawing performance of the magnesium + 1.5 pct alloy sheet† over a wide range of temperatures has been investigated by Weber and Vanden Berg,' and their results are presented in Fig I. It should be noted from this work that a maximum drawability of about 25 pct at room temperature has been obtained on this alloy under the conventional deep-drawing operations. For the same alloy, it is now possible to augment the cold drawability to about 40 pct by a process to be disclosed. Hitherto, this value has been obtained only by deep-drawing the alloy at around 230°C. That greater plastic flow is attainable at atmospheric temperatures on magnesium under certain deformational techniques was discovered by the authors6 in their analyses of plastic-deformational behaviors of pure magnesium. This fact is best illustrated in Fig 2 from the Har-greaves analysis6 performed by the authors under two different modes of loading. For direct test, a separate unstrained specimen was used for each load duration, whereas for the integrated test the same specimen was employed for all the five intermittent loadings so that the load duration was made additive throughout the investigation. The higher plastic flow-rate at room temperature, as designated by the Har-greaves constant S, was obtained by the integrated or intermittent loading procedure. The authors6 in further tests showed that, under such a procedure greater plastic flow was also realized with a progressive increase in deformatione 1 loads. These findings have been applicd

In terms of present metal prices, analysis of extant records of the Eureka district indicate past production of the magnitude of $200,000,000 in recovered silver, lead, and gold. Production to date has been thoroughly oxidized ore from massive replacements, fissures, manta, and pipe-like bodies-in large part from the massive Eldorado (middle Cambrian) and Hamburg (middle to late Cambrian) dolomite horizons. In the productive area of about 6 square miles carbonate rocks comprise 80 per cent of the section, which includes early Cambrian to late Ordovician horizons. Four-fifths or more of the district's production came from a block of Eldorado dolomite in Ruby Hill that was moved in over younger horizons on strands of a regional thrust fault. The lower 500 to 600 feet of the block was much fractured and brecciated and became host to the ores. The Ruby Hill fault, a late normal fault, limits the Ruby Hill block of dolomite on the north for its entire length of nearly a mile and terminates the downward extent and exploitation of its ores. It introduced an hiatus of some 40 years in the district's development. Drilling of the past 20-odd years, followed by underground work, has now exposed the down-faulted extension of the Ruby Hill block of Eldorado dolomite and its contained ores, dropped 1800 feet in a dip shift to depths beneath the surface of 2000 to 3000 feet. The ores at depth are the sulfide counterpart of those mined in early years on the footwall side of the fault. The ores of the district may be attributed to the same source as the intrusive quartz diorite outcropping in a limited way south of Ruby Hill but found at depth elsewhere in drill holes. The long north-south axis of the district, its anticlinal structure, its major faults, and the distribution of the intrusives and, in their relation to the surface, the ores themselves, all suggest that erosion has not cut deep enough to expose the extent of intrusives and the ores consequent upon them.

THE statisticians had defeated Germany months before she invaded Poland. With batteries of adding machines they had proved that she was suffering from serious deficiencies in critical food- stuffs and in practically all of the raw materials necessary for the conduct of modern warfare. Their calculations showed that with respect to fats, oils, wool, cotton, hides, petroleum, iron, copper and other metals, the Reich was bound to be at a great disadvantage vis-a-vis the French and British as long as the latter could keep open the lines of sea communication. The conclusion seemed obvious-"Germany can't win." The more cautious of the commentators introduced qualifications as to the length of the war and the tightness of the British and French blockade. They also made a third qualification as to the character of the struggle- whether it was to be a war of attrition or a war of movement. But since the invasion of Norway in April, there is no longer any doubt on this score. It is a war of movement-a war in which fuel, lubricants, and metals are being consumed on a scale never before seen.

In any earth-moving operation, more profit may be earned or lost by equipment scheduling than by any other single facet of the project. Many now-defunct earth movers would have survived the cost-profit squeeze had they followed an efficient, cost saving, equipment scheduling program. The ideal program would have every item of the equipment fleet working all of the time. In practice this ideal situation is not possible. Several basic methods of equipment scheduling, with an infinite number of minor variations, are used. The first approach is the use of a "minimum equipment fleet," of which all items or equipment are scheduled each working shift.

The trend of American construction toward permanence and longevity is noticeable in the more recent coal plant installations; also, the policy of many coal operators has changed from seeking to obtain the desired tonnage from several plants of small capacities to designing a single installation to produce the whole amount. The mine openings and plant of the Nemacolin mine of The Buckeye Coal Co., are located on the Greene County side of the Monongahela River, 73 miles south of Pittsburgh. The map (Fig. 1) shows the general location, also the Lambert syncline. This syncline partly accounts for the selection of the site; the other reasons were the possibilities of rail and river shipments. Two shafts and a slope were sunk to the coal, work starting on all three in the second half of the year 1917. The air shaft was sunk to a depth of 243 ft. and completed in February, 1918; the slope was completed in November, and the skip shaft was stopped at a depth of 21 ft. below the coal, then the concrete lining was stopped 8 ft. above the coal August, 1918. Work on the skip shaft was resumed May, 1923, and sunk to a depth of 60 ft. below the coal by September, but it was not until May, 1924, that the lining was poured. Max. Min. The surface plan shows the relative positions of the openings. Coal was first hoisted from the air shaft May 7, 1918, and entry driving was continued; but the coal had to be stored, as the railroad had not been extended from Crucible to Nemacolin. As soon as the slope was driven to the coal and the linings concreted, the entries were driven along projected lines to connect with those advancing from the air shaft, and skip shaft. As soon as the underground connections had been made between the two shafts, the hoisting by buckets was inaugurated at the skip shaft and construction on the fan at the air shaft started.

Discussion of the paper of Robert Henry Lee, presented at the New York Meeting, October, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 82, October, 1913, pp. 2515 to 2522. J. E. JOHNSON, JR., New York, N. Y.:-This subject is of great and increasing importance, as the exhaustion of the deposits of ore of ideal character compels the iron industry to turn more and more to those which are less desirable on account of physical structure as well as analysis. Thus there has come about the use of the Mesabi ores in this country and also of the Minette ores in Europe, which produce far greater percentages of flue dust than did the lumpy ores first used. It is a matter of common knowledge that the utilization of this flue dust, containing commonly 50 per. cent. or more of metallic iron, has been a problem very difficult and tedious of solution. The number and variety of the solutions now offered is a sufficient proof of this. . I have no intention of going into the merits or demerits of any of these processes as such, but there are certain considerations concerning the effect of their product on the operation and fuel economy of the blast furnace which I believe to be new and which I desire to bring out. There are two methods, so different as almost to be direct opposites of each other, whereby an ore may exercise an unfavorable effect on the economy of the blast furnace. The first of these is well known and results from the ore being refractory and highly resistant to the action of the reducing gases of the blast furnace. This results in its being incompletely reduced when it reaches the zone of fusion and in the reduction being finished by the direct action of carbon in the lower portion of the furnace. This is so well understood as to need little elaboration or comment. There is, however, another action which may be equally as fatal to the economy of the furnace as the foregoing, and as this point is, to the best of my knowledge, not generally appreciated, it is one upon which I desire to lay particular stress. This consists in the ore being, in a sense, too reducible.

IN a previous study of hypereutectoid Ti-Ni alloys' a substructure was observed in quenched powder specimens when the constitution was 100 pet retained ß body-centered-cubic phase. The alloy powders were quenched from 1000°C by a blast of helium gas and precautions already described were observed throughout the work, to minimize contamination. Ogden et al.2 have previously observed subboundaries in the ß phase of a Ti-Mn-N alloy; but this structure was attributed to nitrogen-rich a precipitation. The nitrogen content of the Ti-Ni alloys does not exceed 0.02 pet and the quenching rate was sufficiently rapid to suppress precipitation reactions. Since X-ray diffraction results have confirmed the absence of any second phase which might account for this phenomenon, it seems unlikely that this substructure is explicable in terms of nitrogen content. Fig. 1 shows the substructure in adjacent grains of 100 pet ß phase in a quenched 6 atomic pet Ni alloy. Fig. 2 shows adjacent ß grains in a similarly treated alloy; one grain contains marked intracrys-talline boundaries and the other is completely free from any substructure. The suberystals appear to have fairly regular shapes, suggesting a regular orientation relationship among them. Tempering the retained ß structure at temperatures below the eutectoid eliminates the substructure at an early stage of ß decomposition. At the present time it is possible only to guess at an explanation for this subboundary phenomenon, since very little work has been reported on substructures resulting from phase changes. CLIMAX ore is an altered and highly silicified granite, about half of the gangue being quartz. Molybdenite is the only mineral recovered and most of it is intimately associated with the quartz in fine veinlets. Other minerals are molybdite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. Although the molybdite may be readily extracted by hydrometallurgical methods, its content is too low to make this profitable. The pyrite ranges from 2 to 5 per cent and the chalcopyrite from 0.03 to 0.05 per cent. There is not enough copper to make its recovery attractive and one of the problems is its elimination, and that of pyrite iron, from the final product. On account of the high degree of dissemination of the molybdenite and the necessity of eliminating the iron and copper, fine-grinding followed by flotation is the only known feasible method of concentration. The authors of this paper, in substituting values in a material balance equation associated with a gas reserve and a water drive, cannot find sustainment of what the gas in place should be; therefore, their conclusion is that this type of problem dealing with gas reservoirs is insoluble. They have introduced the word, "cybernetics," based on the work of Norbert Wiener, that further extends this line of reasoning, namely, to the effect that the system is a "black box", and that the gas reservoir and aquifer can take on infinite aspects 'based upon their past performance, to quote the authors. The inference is that this black box is an unknown. which permits in computer programming to subscribe as many variables as possible to observe by adjustment of one to another those combinations of conditions that fit field behavior. This may satisfy those in this discipline whose dedication is to programming, but to the others this is a comparison to the rationalization of the combinational results of the throwing of dice—a probability procedure. In reservoir engineering we are more direct. We learn from the examination of individual we'll and field data exactly what is in this black box. I now come to the impasse that has confronted these authors in their machine calculations. In this I have reproduced from their own production data (Tables 1 and 2 of their paper) pressure vs cumulative gas produced. shown as Figs. D-1 through D-5. A perusal of any of these five plots, for the corresponding fields in the Po Valley, shows the straight-line relation of pressure vs gas produced, evidencing pressure depletion. The point I make is that in their fundamental production data, there is no variance from a straight line that can support a water drive.

DAVIS,' in an investigation of solute redistribution along molten rods of dilute silver in tin, concluded that at horizontal temperature gradients below approximately 5°C per cm very little convective mixing takes place. Cole and winegard2 observed temperature oscillations in horizontal melts of tin, with temperature gradients of several deg per cm. They associated the temperature oscillations with the presence of convective flow in the melt. At temperature gradients less than 1°C per cm they did not detect convective flow. In the present work, direct measurements of con-vective flow in liquid tin have been made using a radioactive tracer technique. The results indicate that extensive convective flow occurs at temperature gradients below those previously reported. The apparatus used to determine the extent of con-vective flow is shown in Fig. 1. The graphite boat Fig. l(a), has two rectangular channels both of which contain molten tin. Radioactive Ag110 in the form of Sn-0.2 pct Ag alloy was introduced at the end of one channel, by rotating the cylinder shown. A series of fixed thermocouples were positioned along the center of the second channel to determine the temperature gradient. It was assumed that the two channels had identical temperature distributions. The graphite boat was inserted into a vycor tube which was surrounded by a multiple winding tube furnace as shown in Fig. l(b). The tin was melted in an argon atmosphere. The authors of this paper are to be commended for a clear exposition of a timely subject. However, some important conclusions, in addition to those presented in the paper, can be drawn from the results of their elaborate and rather complete numerical computations. First of all, the major part of the calculations presented in the paper are for semi-infinite slabs of oil shale (the authors designate this as Model I) and a question must be posed — Are these elaborate computations needed to arrive at realistic estimates of the shale oil displaced. Consider the model of Lauwerier* that corresponds to the authors Model I if thermal conduction parallel to the fracture be neglected. If one also neglects the finite (but relatively small) heat capacity of the material in the fracture, it is easily shown from Lauwerier's solution that the cumulative oil production would be:

The numerous direct processes which have been patented and brought before the iron-masters of the world, differ materially from that now introduced by Mr. Wilson. After a careful examination of his process, I am convinced that Mr. Wilson has succeeded in producing good blooms from iron-ore, and I think that I am able to point out theoretically the chief reasons of the success of his method. Without going deeply into the history of the metal, I may mention the well-known fact, that wrought-iron was extensively used in almost all quarters of the globe, before pig or cast-iron was ever produced. Without entering into the details of the processes by which this wrought-iron was made, it suffices for my present purpose to say that they were crude, wasteful, and expensive, so that they can IE employed to-day only in a very few localities favored with good and cheap ore, fuel, and labor. The constructiou of larger furnaces and the employment of higher temperatures led to the production of a highly carbonized, fusible metal, without any special design on the part of the manufacturers in producing it. This pig-iron, however, could be used only for a few purposes for which metallie iron was needed; but it was produced cheaply and with little loss of metal, and the attempt to decarbonize this product and bring it into a state in which it could be hammered and welded was soon successfully made. This process of decarbonizatioa, or some modification of it, has successfully held the field against all, so-called, direct processes up to the present time. Why ? Because the old-fashioned bloomeries and Catalan forges could produce blooms only at a high cost, and because the new processes introduced failed to turn out good blooms. Those produced were invariably "red-short," that is, they contained unreduced oxide of iron, which prevented the contact of the metallic particles, and rendered the welding together of these particles to form a solid bloom impossible. The process of puddling cast-iron, and transforming it by decarhonization into wrought-iron has, as everybody knows, been in successful practical operation for many years, and the direct process referred to so closely resembles this, that a short description of the theory of puddling is not out of place here.
