At least one US senator believes that the events of Sept. 11, 2001 made many citizens see the need for the country to become more self-reliant on its growing energy needs. Even before that tragic day, however, the Bush administration was making a strong push to open up more public land for energy and natural resource development.

ONE OF THE many services rendered by the Federal Bureau of Mines is the identification and general examination of ore and mineral samples. Many of these, coming from almost every State in the Union, are clay and shale samples. Other Government agencies, State geologists, universities, and other laboratories are often requested to make similar examinations. This publication describes methods of testing these samples. An earlier paper, published in 1943, described Bureau of Mines methods of testing such clays.3 This paper was to be followed later with another (part II) that would describe much more thorough testing than did the rather general outline of part I. Part I has been out of print for some time and needs revision, and part II was never written; hence, the present publication is designed to include part I and also those additions intended as part II. The tests presented in part I were simple, requiring only the ordinary equipment to be found in any good chemical laboratory. The second publication was to include a greater number of test procedures and information on increasing the accuracy and precision of those previously given.

A geological model accounting for uncertainties possesses important advantages for resource estimation. Machine learning algorithms (MLAs) employed on multivariate geochemical datasets open up ways to new methodologies for such geological models with ease in comparison to traditional geostatistical methods. This article proposes a two-step MLA with an ensemble implementation to define geological domains and their uncertainties based on geochemical data. The proposed workflow is applied hierarchically on a dataset from a porphyry copper deposit to perform binary classification that can be attributed to alteration domains.

The combination of high moisture and low heating value has restricted most low-rank coal (LRC) usage worldwide to mine-mouth power generation. Coals from Usibelli Coal Mine and the Beluga coal field have a heating value of approximately 8,000 Btu/lb and 28% moisture. Hydrothermal treatment (at 275 to 352'C) of lump coal from Usibelli Coal Mine and Beluga coal field enhanced the heating value of the coal, on an equilibrium moisture basis, from 8,000 Btu/lb to nearly 12,000 Btu/lb. The product coal with high heating value and 0.2 % S is an environmentally acceptable premium fuel. The Hardgrove grindability index of the coal is greatly improved, further enhancing its value. Increase in hydrothermal drying temperature promotes vesiculation of resinite. Vitrinite reflectance increased to 0.72 and vitrinite was subjected to widespread visiculation resulting in a coke like structure indicative that the material went through the fluid stage.

A laboratory investigation was carried out on the characterization and beneficiation of sillimanite ore. Petrographic analysis indicated that the ore consisted of massive elongated sillimanite grains in a matrix of hematite, garnet, feldspar and silica. A procedure for estimating the percentage of sillimanite was developed using float-sink and magnetic-separation techniques. A liberation study was carried out to determine the level of size reduction required to achieve sufficient liberation while ensuring that gravity concentration techniques would be applicable. Laboratory testing was performed on the liberated ore to investigate the applicability of using wide-angle dense-medium cycloning to upgrade this ore. Initially, medium-only tests were carried out using various size distributions of magnetite and ferrosilicon as the dense-medium solids to evaluate the effects of operating conditions on medium segregation. Depending on the medium solids and operating conditions, either positive of negative differentials (difference between the relative densities of the underflow and overflow streams) were obtained. Based on these results, separation tests were performed to process nominal -1.2-mm sillimanite ore. The results indicated that sillimanite concentration could be obtained using a medium relative density that was much lower than would typically be used in a dense-medium cyclone separation.

CHINA can he roughly divided into three metallogenetic province: North China, the Yangtze Valley, and South China. In North China the old Pre-Cambrian schists and gneisses are represented by the abundance of quartz mines in which sporadic occurrences of copper, lead, zinc, gold, and silver are sometimes found in subordinate quantities. Along the Yangtze Valley and in Central China, extending eastward as far as Shantung, are found here and there intrusions of dioritic rocks, in which occur the famous contact deposits of iron ore, besides which minor quantities of copper. lead, and zinc are also found. In South China the igneous intrunsions are of granitoid type in which, or in the vicinity of which, occur in certain regions immense deposits of antimony, tungsten, tin, and mercury. Broadly speaking. most of the famous coal mines are now situated in regions north of the Yangtze River, in which occur also the sedimentary deposits of iron in contradistinction to the contact deposits of iron along the Yangtze Valley.

Between 1927 and 1957, sodium borate minerals were mined by underground methods in the Kramer District, Kern County, Calif. In 1957, surface mining methods were initiated, and during the next two or more decades it is probable that most of the production from the district will be obtained from open pits. However, part of this borate deposit is sufficiently deep that surface mining may not be economical and, hence, at some future date underground methods may again be employed. This report was prepared to document the underground mining methods employed in the district before 1957. The general geology of the district and the detailed geology of each of four mine sites are presented, together with a mineral and mechanical description of the ore and enveloping rock. The report also describes the stoping, extraction, pillar support, methods of artificial support, and other factors that affect the structural characteristics of these mines.

This paper describes the operations of the St. Joe Mining & Milling Co. in Boulder County, Colo., as of June 1936. Later a brief visit was made to the mine in September 1936; information obtained at that time has also been recorded. The company operates a gold mine, the Grand Republic, in the Sugar Loaf mining district; a 100-ton flotation mill in Lefthand Canyon near Gold Hill; and a custom sampling punt, the Boulder Ore Sampling Works, at Boulder, Colo.

This final report summarizes the work done by The Bendix Corporation, Environmental Science Division, under contract to the Bureau of Mines to design, develop and test two improved systems for remote sampling the air at the working face of a coal mine in conjunction with approved portable methane detectors and machine-mounted methane monitors respectively. The work was started in May 1973 with preliminary design studies and was completed in May 1975. Five portable and two machine-mounted sampling systems were delivered. Contract "add-on" requirements for (1) modification of the machine-mounted system to accommodate a flame safety lamp and (2) a study of sensor response time improvement for the machine-mounted system were also completed.

The following report is made through the Bureau of Mines as a result of the work under the cooperative agreement with the State geological survey and the engineering experiment station of the University of Illinois. It deals with the use of permissible explosives in the coal mines of Illinois, and is intended primarily to present to mining men the possibility of assuring safer conditions in mining through the use of these explosives. Twenty coal mines in Illinois were using these relatively safe explosives at the time this report was prepared. Of these, seventeen were in Franklin County, two were in Saline County, and one in Montgomery County. In these various fields experience had shown that although black blasting powder was a useful agent in breaking down the coal at the working face, yet it had given such conclusive evidence of its danger to life and property in causing explosions and mine fires that a substitute was sought and has been found in permissible explosives. Each coal mine in Illinois in which permissible explosives are used was visited and a study made of the problems involved. The report deals briefly with the dangers of black blasting powder now in such common use in coal mining. It discusses the development of permissible explosives and their introduction into Illinois coal mines and points out the characteristic differences between permissible explosives and black blasting powder. The present system of blasting and the most approved methods of using permissible explosives are described. Data are given to show that not only has safety and efficiency in these mines been greatly improved, but that the cost of explosives to the miner per ton of coal has been reduced, and that sizes of coal produced from permissible explosives compare favorably with those previously obtained at the same mines with black blasting powder. The successful use of permissible explosives in these Illinois mines as well as in many other mines throughout the country should aid in their introduction into a larger number of mines and bring about that degree of freedom from explosions and fires which should be attained in mining.

From July 1, 1949, to July 1, 1950, the Bureau of Mines conducted the research and technologic work on coal and coal products that is summarized in this report. The research, described in this fifteenth of a series of resumes, is presented in more detail in publications (see footnote references) that appeared during the fiscal year, though in some cases research data are given that have not been published elsewhere. Results of research in the experimental coal mine, on explosives, and on gas and dust explosions will be found in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 4228, Annual Report of Research and Technologic Work on Explosives, Explosions, and Flames, Fiscal Year 1950. An over-all view of our coal, oil, end natural-gas reserves was presented, and the future possibilities for the, production of synthetic liquid fuels from coal were delineated.3/

As argamassas estudadas foram confeccionadas com metacaulim (precursor) ativado com solução composta por hidróxido de potássio e água destilada, e areia normal brasileira. De acordo com os resultados, a resistência aumenta com a diminuição da razão ativador/precursor e com o aumento da molaridade da solução ativadora. Além disso, os valores encontrados condizem com os presentes da literatura e com possíveis aplicações para argamassas de múltiplo uso.

The second half of 2008 and the first half of 2009 brought up important anniversaries. My old passport from Czechoslovakia has a stamp with date 10-10-1968 at 10:00 AM, the exact time I crossed the border between the former Czechoslovak Republic and Austria. This date has an important meaning because I could not come back to my country for the next 21 years. The 40th anniversary of Soviet led invasion, which took place on the 21st of August 2008, revealed some unknown and long time kept secret news.

"INTRODUCTION The United States, with its vast resources of relatively low-grade zinc been the world's leading producer of zinc -metal for many years. The expanded zinc production during the period, 1939-44, inclusive, was induced by favorable premium prices and has depleted the known ore reserves in the United States. The 1943-44 rate of zinc production cannot long be maintained in the United States, especially if premium prices are removed. Domestic zinc reserves, have been depleted to such an extent that it is doubtful if our mines will again be able to completely and continually fulfill the needs of this country.The Bureau of Mines, anticipating a postwar consumer demand for 550,000 to 750,000 tons of slab zinc and an additional 100,000 tons for use in paints and chemicals, sent two engineers to Sedanka Island in July 1945 to investi¬gate the deposits near Biorka Harbor.ACKNOWLEDGMENTIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "Sillimanite, kyanite, and andalusite are aluminum silicates having the same chemical composition (Al2Si05) and are used in the ceramic industry for the manufacture of high-grade refractories. ""Natural sillimanite with added corundum or other alumina to just short of mullite 2SiO2) proportions is unequalled for jobs where strength at high temperatures, resistance to spalling, and resistance to slagging by acid slags is desired. High-grade porcelain ware also requires these minerals.""At the same cost, sillimanite would be preferred for most uses, but the lack of any large source of sillimanite has given economic preference to kyanite or andalusite for special refractories and high-grade porcelain ware.""3/The possible economic value of the sillimanite schist in the piedmont Plateau was first recognized by Dr. L. L. Smith, of the University of South Carolina, who published an article in the Engineering and Mining Journal, August 1943, on an occurrence of sillimanite schist in South Carolina.The Bureau of Mines was interested in developing a large source of sillimanite to relieve the shortage of high-grade refractories, and initiated a project to locate the ore-bearing areas in Georgia and South Carolina and to develop the most favorable ones.Two hundred and seventy-eight outcrops of sillimanite-bearing schists were found by a Bureau of Mines engineer.4/ The schist occurs irregularly throughout a belt extending from Talbot County, Georgia; to Spartanburg County, South Carolina, about 220•miIes long and approximately 15 miles in maximum width. The Bureau drilled four areas of the more coarsely crystallized schist in Georgia and South Carolina:In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "One of the major issues that the Rare Earth Elements Mining Industry has to deal with is the legislation vacuum that exists in many countries around the world. Among these, are countries which have long history and tradition in mining. In many cases the lack of direct legislation for REE mine management as well as for other potentially polluting industries can be a barrier to sustainable development. Moreover, the case of lax legislation in China has led to environmental pollution problems and extended smuggling of rare earth elements. This paper looks into the current regulatory status on the mining of REEs, identifies the loopholes and suggests some elements for a new global legislation framework for sustainable development in the REE mining industry. The setting of this regulatory framework will be in line with the present and future challenges of the rare earths market as well as with the policy strategies that are defined internationally. The aim of such a legislative framework will be to strengthen the global rare earth elements supply chain, appease social concerns and ensure the preservation and conservation of the environment. INTRODUCTION The general public received their first introduction to rare earth elements (REEs) in 2010, when the previously inconspicuous commodities became the subjects of front-page headlines. It was when China created a furore in global high-tech markets after imposing an embargo on Japan following a minor marine dispute (Barakos et al. 2015b). Soon enough the Chinese embargo was extended on REE export restrictions all over the world and thus aroused concerns to many countries over potential supply disruptions. The world had suddenly realized that these wonder materials underpin products that they care about. Governmental and industry executives, policymakers and material scientists voiced concerns and conducted numerous reports stating the situation and the risks of a supply crisis. The price spike of 2011 intensified the crisis and the public turmoil, yet the drama did not last for long as the prices declined significantly in 2012. Nevertheless, the world was nonplussed by the fact that China has the total control of the market with more or less the 90% of the global production. More potential entrants became interested, thus initiating an exploration boom during the recent years that has resulted in a significant increase in known global REE reserves that could have potentials for exploitation."
