"Abstract In recent years, there have been major problems with deep excavations in urban areas supported by diaphragm walls. In some cases, like the fatal Nicoll Highway collapse in Singapore the quality of the D-walls was not the cause. However in other projects, like the problems with the major leak in the walls of the Boston Big Dig and with leakage in a few projects in Belgium and The Netherlands was related to poor D-wall quality. Leakage through the D-walls at the joints in deep excavations led in these cases to very serious settlement behind the walls, in the case of the North- South line in Amsterdam, there was severe damage to historical buildings. This paper describes ongoing research that focusses i on acquiring more knowledge on and improvement of D-wall installation, in particular the flow process prior and during casting ii on the detection of anomalies prior to excavation and iii on the composition of the concrete mixture in view of a better and more sustainable concrete quality of D-walls.INTRODUCTIONIn the case of deep excavations in urban areas close to neighbouring buildings, diaphragm walls are one of the best feasible solutions for the retaining structure. Although the costs of D-walls generally exceed the costs of alternative wall solutions, the advantages are decisive in many situations. The main advantages of D-walls are the limited impact of the installation on the built environment, the high stiffness and bearing capacity and the retention of water, even at considerable depths. This makes Dwalls often the preferred solution for deep excavations Sometimes the D-walls are the temporary support while for the final stage a complete concrete box is constructed in the excavation. In many other cases the D-wall has the permanent function of retaining soil as well as groundwater.In the last ten years, there have been major problems with deep excavations in urban areas supported by diaphragm walls. In some cases, like the fatal Nicoll Highway collapse, 2004 , the quality of the Dwalls was not the cause. In other important failures like the collapse of the Archives in Cologne, 2008 and Dubai Infinity Tower Flooding, 2007 a combination of design and quality issues played a role. However, the major leak in the walls of the Boston Big Dig was related to poor D-wall quality (McNichol, 2000). Van Tol et al, (2010) describe a number of case studies in Belgium and the Netherlands, with leakage through the D-walls at stop end joints. In several cases with deep excavations these leakage caused serious surface settlements behind the walls. In the case of the North-South line in Amsterdam, there was severe damage to historical buildings. All these cases have generated considerable additional costs and delays, and subsequently public and political concern. Van Tol et al. (2010) present several possibilities to improve the quality of D-walls.Other disputes related to D-walls deal with the quality of the concrete and the sustainability of D-walls applied as a permanent wall. In particular the porosity of the concrete cover is sometimes problematic."

The lack of integration of mining and metallurgical information with sufficient detail for analysis causes inefficient operation and hence sub-optimal energy and water use. It is difficult to analyze the performance of mining and metallurgical processes without an integrated view of mine transactions, stockpile inventories, process flows and assays. To take action requires real time information from manufacturing assets, corrected for gross errors from trucks, shovels, conveyors, faulty sensors, bad instrument calibration. This paper presents an infrastructure with advanced tools that sift through available data, identify and eliminate gross errors, and transform the data into business information for continuous improvement and optimization. Collaboration is a key component of improving efficiency of energy and water use, and the evolution of Web technology enables collaboration and troubleshooting of plant information to more quickly act on issues to reduce wasteful operation. My selection of the Australian coal industry as the theme of this Presidential Address arose from the fact that it is one of our most important mineral industries. The industry is presently prospering.M.ore coal, mostly of better quality (except for certarn power-house types), is being produced more cheaply in terms of real money than at any time in the past, and exports overseas are currently at a highlevel.In. spite of this, concern has been expressed in certam quarters about the future of some phases of the industry; for example, there has been some public comment on the selling price of our coking coal to Japan, the possible over-export of our coking coals from New South Wales, the introduction of foreign capital to develop large-scale mining ventures in Queensland, and the proposed export of substantial quantities of coking coal from the same State.Furthermore, proposals for the introduction of atomic power plants into several States well endowed with reserves of coal have given rise to comment, and recently the Department of National Development(1968) warned that insufficient attention is being paid to "orderly development and careful husbanding of the nation's coal.To reach a balanced judgment on whether these views are well founded it is essential to make a broad survey of the present position of the coal industry in the Australian economy. I therefore propose to deal briefly with several aspects, and to comment, in particular, on the important subjects of exploration and research in progress at present on Australian coals.Detailed descriptions of the Australian coalfields are to be found in existing technical publications (e.g.. Andrew, 1965; McLeod, 1965) and the data on coal reserves have been progressively revised as more accurate information has become available. "Abstract The economic and safe design of deep foundation systems in difficult soil conditions is based on a reduction of construction material used, construction time spent, energy consumed and a high-level modelling of the soil-structure-interaction. The special foundation system Combined Pile- Raft Foundation (CPRF), in-situ load tests on the construction site and a sufficient soil investigation allow cost optimised constructions. In any case at challenging projects the observational method has to be applied for verification and quality control of the design. Regarding the 4-Eye-Principle as basis of the quality control management an independent peer review of the planning, design and construction phases is the guarantee for safety, serviceability and optimisation of all projects. Main execution standards for the construction of deep foundations based on the Eurocode 7 are summarised and discussed. The paper presents the basics of the safe and qualified design and construction of foundation systems including quality assurance. "Sediments in the vicinity of the hydrothermal seafloor massive sulphide (SMS) mounds are characterized by high concentration of metallic particles. They result from a long process of weathering of the primary mineral deposits and have been accumulated in depressions by mass wasting and hydrothermal plume fall-out. We present here the first results obtained on pore waters analyses of such sediments in distinct geological seafloor environments (in low-temperature hydrothermally active zones, on extinct hydrothermal mounds and in a remote depositional channel). Vertical concentration profiles suggest that the pore fluid composition is affected more by seawater circulation compared with hydrothermal fluid flow in all environments. The composition of pore fluids is affected by diagenesis and redox processes in the distal depositional channel where Mn2+ is released at depth with Cu2+.IntroductionMarine hydrothermal fields, hosting seafloor massive sulphides, are potential resources for future deep-sea mining and might become economic reserves for the industries. They are widespread at mid-oceanic ridges, arcs and back-arc spreading centers (Hannington et al., 2011; German et al., 2016). Sediments in the vicinity of these fields can contain unusually high concentration of Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu among other metal elements (Shearme et al., 1983). These hydrothermal, or metalliferous, sediments result from a combination of processes such as collapsing and weathering of chimney material, filling of the channels by turbidite-like mass wasting, in situ authigenic mineralization and hydrothermal plume fall-out (Goulding et al., 1998; German et al., 1990). The sediments contain important indicators reflecting the development of the hydrothermal systems. Because of their widespread distribution and metal content, they themselves can be considered potential mineral resources. Circulation of seawater through these deposits, however, often modifies the sediment composition by oxidizing the sulphides into oxyhydroxides and clays causing mobilization of the metals. To address the importance of alteration and diagenesis of these hydrothermal sediments, including the result of seawater circulation, we investigated the post-depositional processes occurring in the hydrothermal sediments at the TAG Hydrothermal Field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 26°N), focusing on the mobility of metallic cations in a number of different seafloor environments."

Fin I As far as continuous casting plant concepts are concerned, this specifically requires an optimal adaptation and flexible operation when converting liquid steel into a directly processable product without any in-between treatment. Continuous casters need to fully satisfy the requirements of both the upstream steelmaking facilities as well as the downstream rolling facilities.

The Kwaggashoek East pit is one of the four production areas of Thabazimbi Iron Ore Mine. The Kwaggashoek East Open pit mines through the abandoned sublevel caving operations of the Kwaggashoek East underground workings. A risk assessment indicated that the primary risk is the occurrence of surface subsidence. Based on local knowledge, a hypothesis, that most of the cavities were filled with broken rock as a result of roof collapse and bulking of failed material was formulated. To test the hypothesis a number of geophysical methods as well as probe drilling was utilized. The results of the resistivity, gravity and ground penetrating radar surveys were inconclusive in determining the position of voids. Either there were no voids present or the resolution of the surveys was not high enough to pick it up. It is accepted that only small voids remained, and that the supported roof hypothesis is valid. As a precautionary measure all the production blast holes within the caving area were over-drilled by forty percent. This would collapse the roof of any small voids or tunnels immediately below the block. This operation proved to be successful as two of the three underground levels have been mined out with no subsidence occurring in the pit floor.

San Martin Mine is an open pit, gold heap leach operation located approximately 70 kilometers from the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa. Mining operations commenced in 2000 and were completed late in 2007, while heap leaching operations continue. Reclamation was executed concurrently with operations to the extent practical. The area has distinct rainy and dry seasons and closure objectives include: prevention and mitigation of acid rock drainage, sediment and erosion control, and mitigation of visual impacts. Final closure is well underway at San Martin and this paper describes the closure processes conducted to date, problems encountered, and the subsequent lessons learned.

This report documents the research efforts that were undertaken to design, install and test noise abatement devices for use on off-highway haul trucks operating in surface mines. The objective of the program was to reduce the environmental noise from haul trucks. The noise reduction devices that were developed utilized existing technology and were tested on a 50-ton haul truck. The efforts emphasized the reduction of noise emitted from the engine compartment which included the use of side shields, sound absorbing material, improved radiator shroud design, and a modulating clutch fan. Noise tests were conducted using modified SAE test procedures for measuring sound levels around a stationary and moving machine, and inside of the operators compartment. Test results showed a maximum of 4 dB(A) reduction measured 16 feet from the truck. Interior cab noise was reduced 6 dB(A) with the windows and vents closed.

"Pyrometallurgical furnaces are tapped through tap-holes that are opened with drills and oxygen lances. The lance is often used on its own or as the last step of opening the tap-hole. Interaction of oxygen with molten material inside the tap-hole can occur, and is a phenomenon that is not well understood. As part of a study that focuses on the effect of lancing on flow inside and around the furnace tap-hole, a cold-model validation was done. The validation study focuses on validating the MULTIPHASEINTERFOAM multiphase flow solver in OpenFOAM® for the problem involved. The sensitivity of the model to different materials properties (viscosity and density in particular) is presented with both cold models and the results from flow simulations in OpenFOAM®. IntroductionMany pyrometallurgical operations are carried out in furnaces where molten material accumulates continuously. Once enough material has accumulated and is ready to be removed from the furnace, material is tapped through one or more tap-holes in the furnace. Tap-holes differ significantly in both geometry and materials of construction, depending on the process involved – examples of different types of tap-hole configurations can be found in, for example, Nelson and Hundermark (2014). Tapholes all share one common feature: they are high, wear areas of the furnace. Molten material at high temperature flows through these areas, after which the tap-hole is sealed, usually using tap-hole clay. The purpose of the tap-hole clay is to harden inside the tap-hole and seal it until the next tap.Once ready to tap, a pneumatic drill and/or oxygen lance is used to open the tap-hole. The extent of lancing a furnace tap-hole depends strongly on the type of furnace. In, for example, many blast furnace operations lancing is limited as much as possible, and done only if drilling was not effective. In other operations, such as on small-scale pilot furnaces with short tap-holes, only lancing is used to open the tap-hole."

When originally accepting the assignment, the Client had described the property as vacant land. A prior appraisal was later discovered and revealed that the property included a mineral rights appraisal. Further research disclosed an old dispute with a court ruling based on testimony by AIMA-certified experts. The present appraisal was therefore based on data from findings of the court with a fresh look at discount rate, absorption period, and residual land value. Fortuitously, the property subsequently sold on the market, while meeting all criteria for Fair Market Value. This provided insight into a market-based discount rate. Also, the absorption period could be adjusted in accordance with the current market conditions. The residual land value was minimal (based on comparable sales and projecting trends in market) as the property was affected by a flood zone and the surrounding development was sparse. PROPERTY HISTORY: A GREAT INVESTMENT Briefly, the subject property is located in the floodplain region of the San Jacinto River, a short river in southeastern Texas that flows into Galveston Bay, filled with sand and gravel. This location is on the north side of Houston, north of Beltway 8 on the east side of I-59.

MINE models have three distinct uses: 1. As exhibits in expositions and museums. 2. As exhibits in law suits. 3. As illustrations in teaching mining engineering. All three uses are in a sense educational. The third, or distinctively teaching function, has not been extensively developed in America as it has been abroad, chiefly because of the cost of the models and the scarcity of model makers. In connection with expositions, such as the Columbian, the Louisiana Purchase, and the Panama-Pacific, a number of very good mine and metallurgical models were prepared with funds furnished by State commissions, by mining organizations or mining companies. At the close of these, expositions, some of these models have been deposited in National or State museums or in educational institutions, but too many of them have been lost, or have been stored, away in some mining company's office or in the basement of some State building, where they have been lost sight of and have gradually fallen to pieces. A visitor to a German mining school is impressed by two facts: 1. The mining laboratories are in general inferior to those in America. 2. The mining museums are infinitely superior -to ours, particularly in models exhibited. One may reply to this comparison by saying that a museum is necessarily a work of time. From the historical standpoint this is, of course, true, but it is not necessarily true in connection with a working museum intended to illustrate current practice. For instance, the oldest mining school in Germany, that at Freiberg, has much excellent historical material, but very little on modern practice, while Berlin, one of the youngest German mining schools, has a most extensive and valuable collection of modern appliances and models. This is true in spite of the fact that one of the best-known model shops is at Freiberg, from which many of, the models to be seen in America have come. The Crinum mine has recently completed workings in the southern area of the mine. Over the 10 years of longwall production 40 million tonnes have been extracted and the mine has experienced over 40 longwall face, 3 main gateend, and 2 tail gateend roof falls as well as 5 roadway roof falls away from the longwall. Weak roof (less than 10MPa (1450psi) in the bolted horizon) has been the principal roof control issue at the mine. However, weak, highly cleated coal, water inflow from overlying aquifers, some minor structure and a diatreme in the main headings have also contributed to the challenges at the mine. This paper describes the geotechnical experience over the 10 years, the mine?s approach to addressing the issues and the relative success of these approaches.

Deepening of harbours has become a priority, necessary to the ongoing operation of the wharves in the face of deeper draft merchant vessels and cruise ships. It is now standard practice in many areas to provide for harbours to be dredged to significant depths below mean sea level, in the order of 12.00 m (39 ft) for existing berths and 15.00 m (49 ft) for new wharf construction. The Ravenna Port Authority initiated a project to deepen the harbour bottom at selected wharves to a depth of 12.00 m (39 ft). In preference to reconstruction of the wharves with longer and heavier sheet piling or other equally disruptive reconstruction, they identified the structural reinforcement of the existing wharves by means of deep underwater tie rods as a possible alternative cost-effective solution. Having defined the design concept, effort was concentrated on developing the required technology. A technique, already in use for the installation of tie rods by means of robotics, was identified as potentially suitable for underwater use. It was decided to carry out the fine tuning and the evolution of the technology for a marine environment of the robot unit and of the related remote control software that controls the installation of the tie rods. An experimental test site was set up to refine the drilling, installation, grouting, monitoring and testing of underwater tie rods. The purpose was to confirm the feasibility of the proposed solution and the reliability of these tie rods for use in the reinforcement and construction of wharves. The paper also discusses the theoretical and experimental study of underwater tie rods dealing with the theoretical analysis of the interaction between tie rod and soil, aimed at identifying the correlation between the forces of applied traction and the corresponding measured elongations. A series of tests were carried out with positive results, both at the operating load of 300 kN (67 kips) and at the nominal maximum load of 630 kN (142 kips). The tests were carried out on seven tie rods, of which three were installed at a depth of 5.00 m (16 ft), principally to test the reliability of the operating and remote control systems in the presence of a significant hydrostatic pressure, and four were placed at a depth of 8.00 m (26 ft) to check the load bearing capability of the tie rods positioned at the depth called for by the current project.

The selection of an underground mining method stems from a multivariate analysis that considers geomechanical, geological, economic, and operational parameters. Even after identifying the most compatible method, there is no assurance that the mining company will achieve the best performance. The geological complexity of some deposits requires adaptations of methods described in the literature to obtain more selectivity and reduce mining waste. There are some studies on geometry of underground structures, but a methodology that describes an adaptation of a room-and-pillar mining method for ore bodies with down-dip varying from 20° to 25° is novel. The present work aimed to reduce dilution by adapting the traditional room-and-pillar mining method (TRP) to inclined ore boLittle attention has been paid to the rehabilitation of derelict and ownerless mines in South Africa after their lifespan. This paper aims to explore management gaps in legislation that have resulted in the non-rehabilitation of derelict and ownerless mines in South Africa. There is growing evidence that supports the distressing effects of mining on people living around these mines in the North West Province. This paper was motivated by the current socio-economic status quo of old mining towns, the influx of illegal miners (Zama Zamas), severe environmental damages, and the violence associated with derelict mines. Underpinning this research was an ecosystem approach and integrated resources management principles, which formed the foundation for the decision-making process.The researcher used a mixed-method approach and employed convergent techniques. A semi-structured instrument was used to collect data from 200 respondents. The results indicated that there is a dire need for community-based consultative processes, and an absence of clear guidelines for derelict and ownerless mines to pressure mine management to adhere to rehabilitation standards. Moreover, the mining charter is ambiguous regarding policy implementation, budgetary allocation, and duration of the rehabilitation of these mines. The paper concluded that management challenges associated with derelict mines can be reduced if all stakeholders follow the guidelines as outlined in the environmental legislative framework (NEMA) of South Africa while being open to innovations in line with international best practices. It also contributes towards the development of guidelines for the management and implementation of legislation related to derelict and ownerless mines in South Africa from a philosophical, theoretical, and policy perspectivedies. This new method is entitled short-hole room-and-pillar (SHRP). The equations that measure the dilution are defined according to the geometry of stopes and openings. The results comprise comparative analyses of the operational and planned dilutions to measure the performance of the SHRP method. The average operating dilution of the SHRP method was more than five times lower than the planned dilution according to the TRP method. Low operational dilution indicates high selectivity of the method and its potential to reduce underground mining tailings.

In December 2009, the Italian High Speed Rail Network AV began running over the full 1000 km system length from Turin, at the foothills of the Alps to Salerno, on the seacoast south of the volcano Mt. Vesuvius. It runs through Alpine rivers, highly seismic active zones, mountains, river plains, and through some of the most densely populated areas in Europe as well as some of its most expensive real estate. The Italian High Speed Network?s technical/economic constraints and its regulatory/socio-environmental concerns well may mirror similar obstacles set to confront the nascent California High Speed Rail Program. The two types of constraints must be dealt with together to reach the best construction solution. It is estimated that more than 20% of Italian High Speed Rail Network costs were spent on ground engineering including over 150 km of tunnels, 200 km of viaducts and bridges and 650 km of embankments and trenches. However, it also is estimated that 25% of costs were spent on social and environmental integration of the new rail lines including over 6 square miles of green offsets, 160 km of anti-noise walls, and 300 agreements for socio-environmental work. This paper will look at four examples of innovative ground engineering solutions, each with its own intricate set of constraints: ? INTRODUCTION Design of supports for underground chambers in rock has undergone considerable development. This becomes evident when comparing support dimensions of subway station caverns built in the U.S. over the past fifteen years. The Porter Square Station cavern, which is a part of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Red Line extension, is the latest in this series. It is approximately 168 m (550 ft) long, 21 m (70 ft) wide, and 14 m (45 ft) high, and has a permanent support of light steel ribs imbedded in a 0.4 m nominal (15 in) shotcrete lining. An extensive construction control instrumentation program made it possible to evaluate the performance of the cavern and its support. This evaluation, which is presented in this paper, was the objective of a research project sponsored by the Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) and jointly conducted by Haley and Aldrich, and MIT. The actually used design procedure was compared with other approaches, notably procedures based on Finite Element analyses and empirical rock mass classification methods. Support dimensions predicted with all these approaches were compared to the actual support and its performance.
