WHEN THE BUREAU OF MINES was created in 1910, the organic act had as one of its main provisions the following: That it shall be the province of said bureau and its director, under the direction of the Secretary of the Interior, to make diligent investigation of the methods of mining, especially in relation to the safely of miners and the appliances best adapted to prevent accidents, the possible improvement of renditions under which mining operations are carried on, the treatment of ores and other mineral substances, the use of explosives and electricity, the prevention of accidents, and other inquiries and technologic investigations pertinent to said industries, and from tinge to time make such public reports of the work, investigations, and information obtained as the Secretary of said department may direct, with the recommendations of such bureau. The nationwide nature of the health and safety work of the Bureau of Mines has given its representatives an opportunity to study and report on matters pertaining to health and safety in mines and related operations from the time the Bureau was established to the present. Regular annual reports and numerous additional papers and reports have been published each year to place on record and to make available the information gathered. While the basic purpose of this bulletin is to describe health and safety reports for the period January 1947 through June 1955, a selected number of earlier publica¬tions that are believed pertinent for reference purposes are included.

Laboratory test-work has established that two classes of redox catalysts based on anthraquinone and bipyridinium derivatives are effective in accelerating the rate of removal of metallic iron from reduced ilmenite (RI) in the aeration step of the Becher process. Two water-soluble anthraquinone derivatives are efficient: 9,10-anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonicacid, disodium salt (catalyst AQ-2,6) and 9,10-anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid, monosodium salt(catalyst AQ-2). When 0.2 per cent w/v of either was added during aeration the rate of metalliciron removal was accelerated by two to three times. Furthermore, the addition of either compound resulted in magnetite (Fe3O4), the iron oxide phase preferred in commercial practice, being formed. However, both AQ-2,6 and AQ-2 were rapidly lost from solution during aeration although their catalytic activities persisted even when their concentrations in solution were low(<0.05 per cent w/v). The negatively charged anthraquinones were lost from solution most probably by adsorption onto the magnetite that has a net positive charge at the pH values encountered during aeration. To address this problem, the catalytic activities of positively charged bipryridinium derivatives were tested. Two water-soluble bipyridinium compounds, paraquat (1,1’-dimethyl-4,4’-bipyridinium dichloride) and diquat (6,7 dihydrodipyrido [1,2-a:2’,1’-c] pyrazinediiumdibromide), were found to significantly accelerate the rate of removal of metallic iron from reduced ilmenite, and both gave magnetite as the oxide product in the laboratory tests. Moreover, recycle tests showed they were not lost from solution as quickly as were the anthraquinone derivatives. Results in larger scale plant laboratory reactors also showed a significant increase in aerationrates when diquat was added and magnetite was again the oxide formed. However, the oxygensupply to the reactors was insufficient to achieve the maximum effect of the catalysts on theaeration rates. The limited supply of oxygen in a full scale aerator may prevent the application ofthe catalysts in a commercial Becher operation. "INTRODUCTION There is no doubt about the time and effort companies put in establishing and maintaining their equipment. However, the question about how these companies can map the benefits comes up. Neither do they have the tools to quantify the benefit of their action, nor do they have the tools to know the actual quality of their current maintenance system. The resources used in the process seem futile to observers. It seems impossible to trace improvements and to get information about the impact of actions in retrospect. Improvements in maintenance performance cannot be recognised by management or shareholders. Thus the necessity for measuring the performance of maintenance systems is given. In this paper ConMoto is systematically showing the strengths and weaknesses of many companies' maintenance management and is providing field-tested proven design elements for measuring maintenance systems and implementing Value Oriented Maintenance. Considering only business assets in production facilities and related machinery out of all investment goods in Europe, you reach a value of around 9.7 trillion euros in 2008. In Germany alone the equipment replacement value amounted to about 1.9 trillion euros [8,10,11,13]. If you calculate a cross sector maintenance costs rate of 4.8 % (corresponding to the average value identified in this study), direct maintenance costs in European production locations add up to over 450 billion euros per year [3]. These figures speak for themselves. Yet maintenance is not only of enormous significance for European enterprises. Our experiences show that maintenance and asset management, particularly sustainability issues, are also increasingly moving to the forefront in the BRIC states, in the Middle East and in many emerging countries. First of all, in order to meet the resulting high quality and cost related requirements of maintenance systems, a comprehensive overview of the issue is needed. This overview is provided by a detailed analysis of 83 companies and production plants from various sectors – with amazing results. SIGNIFICANCE OF MAINTENANCE Current studies show the high financial significance of maintenance and asset management. According to the market study in the Asset Manager [9], in industrialised countries about 10 to 15 per cent of the labour force are employed in maintenance and facility management tasks. In Europe about 40 to50 million people are directly and indirectly involved in retaining the value of machinery, plants, buildings, transport systems and infrastructure facilities. A glance at the costs side also demonstrates the great relevance of maintenance. EU-wide annual direct maintenance costs amount to a total of more than 1,500 billion euros. In Germany alone they are about 250 billion euros. This impressive total is considerably exceeded by indirect maintenance costs caused by technical failures. Indirect costs are estimated to be five times higher (Figure 1). [7,12,14]"

(Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) IN, August, 1911, I read a paper before the Lake Superior Mining Institute&apos; on surveying and sampling diamond-drill holes. The present paper gives a more thorough description of these methods, together with a few changes and notes suggested by further experience. Since August, 1911, the methods, used constantly by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., have been developed to a higher degree of efficiency, and have given great satisfaction. Until a few years ago but little attention was paid to the determination of the actual course of drill-holes, to the accurate sampling and analysis of the material, or to the scientific location of the drill-holes. It has now been common practice for several years in many districts to test the inclination of drill-holes by etching glass tubes with hydrofluoric acid, but the direction of deviation from the vertical has not often been determined. Methods of determining the direction by means of a compass were first developed in connection with drilling in Victoria. The latest method used on the Rand in South Africa has been recently described by John I. Hoffman.2 In the same paper Mr. Hoffman describes an ingenious method of wedging-off a drill-bole so as to start new holes at several successive points. By this means a hole can be deflected in any desired direction, and the curvature can be controlled to a considerable extent, provided the rock is soft enough to permit the hole to be wedged off. Unfortunately, in the Lake Superior district, the jasper iron-formation is so hard that it is very difficult, if not impossible, to do this. "INTRODUCTION Coal is a complex substance consisting of many different constituents representing many chemical compounds, very few of which are known. It is homo genetic, however, in that it is derived almost entirely from plants. But plants as a whole are complex, being composed of a large number of tissues, each consisting of a large number of cells in a great number of arrangements and composed of a number of chemical compounds in great variety of proportions, and enclosing a large number of waste products representing a large number of' chemical compounds as cell contents. Coal should therefore be expected to be a very complex substance.That coals are formed from plants is no longer debated, but the manner in which coal was formed from the plants leaves many problems still unsolved. However, in general it is now conceded that all coals of all ranks and ages had their origin in deposits completely analogous to our peat deposits of today and that coal formation is a process that runs through the whole series, beginning with peat, and through, the various ranks of lignite, subbituminous, high-, medium-, and low-volatile bituminous, semianthracite, and anthracite in a related chain. In the study of coal, it is therefore of the utmost importance to study and to know not only the plants contributing but .also the manner in which they are transformed into the substances forming the deposits. It is therefore of the greatest value to review briefly the formation of :,eat as it is known today, and to inquire into the facts as to what plants contribute to peat, what parts and products prevail, what are the chemical compounds that enter and which prevail."

Effects of a mechnochemical treatment to oxide Ni ores have been investigated to enhance the extractive ratio of Ni from them in acid leaching process. High intensity grinding by a planetary boll mill showed strong effect to enhance the extractive ratio of Ni, for example , 10% of extractive ratio of Ni in sulfuric acid leaching(0.05mo1/1,at room temperature) increased to more than 90% with 60min. of planetary boll milling. Effects of additives(sulfur and some oxidants) on the mechnochemical treatment have also studied. Sulfur showed almost no effect to enhance the total Ni extractive ratio but increases the selectivity of Ni extraction. More than a half of Ni could be extracted by water when Ni ore was grinded at addition of Na2S207 in the milling treatment. Some effects of mechnocemical treatments to Ni ore are summarized in this paper.

The Bureau of Mines determined the costs associated with the production of chromium, in the form of chromite and high-carbon ferrochomium, from the demonstated resources of 10 market economy nations. The analyses evaluated the relative geologic and economic position of these chromite resources contained within 80 producing or potential mining operations. This report presents cost evaluations of a demonstrated resource of chromite, contained within the nations studied, of appoximately 1.2 billion metric tons (t). Of this total, 70 pct is contained within the southern African nations of Zimbabwe and the Republic of South Africa. The majority of current chromium mining and smelting capacity is contained within these two countries as well. India and the Philippines have recently demonstrated greatly increased chromite resources and hold the most promise for expanding both chomite and ferrochromium production outside southern Africa. Their demonstrated resources represent approximately 7 and 16 pet, respectively, of the cost evaluated total tonnage. Chromite resources, on an identified or hypothetical basis worldwide, are highly concentrated within Zimbabwe and South Africa, with these two nations containing in excess of 95 pet of the total. Given the present market structure, a majority of chromium contained within the demonstrated chromite resources of the nations studied is economically recoverable; but from a long-term resource and economic perspective, South Africa should inceasingly dominate the markets for both chromite and high-carbon ferrochromium. In addition, it is anticipated that an increasing percentage of chromium traded on the world market in the future will be in the form of high-carbon ferrochromium as opposed to chromite, as this additional processing stage continues to relocate from the industrial nations that account for a majority of chromium consumption to those nations that mine chromite.

LET&apos;S imagine we are at the Grand L Coulee Dam, where daily 15,000 barrels of low-heat Portland cement and 27,000 tons of processed aggregate in various sizes are mixed to produce 30,000 tons of concrete. Inspect the autographic records which show for each 4-cu-yd. mixer batch of concrete the weights of its constituent materials including its several sizes of aggregate, cement, and water, and which also show the period of mixing and the consistency of the mix. Watch the inspectors sample and test the aggregate for gradation and moisture content of sand, and sample the concrete for homogeneity. Watch the huge buckets deposit the concrete in the forms. It looks too dry to handle, but the concrete vibrators make it melt away. Just enough vibration fully to com- pact the mass, but not enough to produce segregation of the materials; the inspector says when. See the sprinkler system covering all hardening concrete with a spray so that it may not thirst for water. Watch the cleaning of the top of an old lift preparatory to placing a new lift; the sand blasting; the blow-down; the mop-up; the minute inspection.

Acid recovery employs ion exchange (I-X) resin as separation media for inorganic acids from dissolved metallic salts by physical adsorption and without the use of chemicals. This technology has been used for years on spent etching and plating liquors to recover acid for reuse in the bath and to reduce waste acid neutralization costs. It is also used for electrolyte treatment to facilitate valuable metal recovery via acidity reduction. TETRA&apos;s ccrxr&apos;" I-X contactor has been used successfully for acid separation from its metallic salt counterpart in a simple, continuous operating mode using strong base anion resins. Efficient separation is enhanced by acid reconcentration to nearly its original strength or as high as 14-20%. Continuous treatment also recovers heat to the tankhouse or bath and improves metal quality due to consistent acid quality. Conventional fixed bed ion exchange (I-X) systems are impractical for acid recovery because of complex control design and large resin inventories needed to process very low liquid-to-resin treatment ratios associated with strong acid concentrations.

Electrical accidents occurring in coal mines from 1975 through 1979 were categorized and analyzed. The data was searched for common electrical hazards, common activities on the part of those injured, and common negligent or careless behavior. The most common electrical hazard was abnormal arcs or sparks, the most common injured activity was handling energized trailing cables, and the most common careless behavior was failure to de-energize circuits before working on them. The accident data was combined with mine production statistics to form a normalized electrical accident rate. It was found that some mines have consistently more lost workdays per man-hour worked than do other mines. Bureau of Mines electrical safety research contract expenditures were reviewed to judge whether the research effort was directed to those areas which are related to the most accidents. In some cases it was not. A method was devised and utilized to estimate the relative cost to the mining industry to implement certain safety measures developed through Bureau research, and also to estimate the potential safety benefits. Some safety changes are recommended, others are not. MSHA regulations were reviewed for effectiveness in preventing electrical accidents, and suggestions were made for discontinuing, clarifying, or otherwise modifying the regulations.

The Corner bay copper deposit is the first significan discovery on the south limb of the Dore Lake Complex, located at the eastern end of the Detour Lake-Chibougamau greenstone belt, Quebec. The deposit was discovered in March, 1981, after 26 years of intermittent work in the area. Mineralization is found in a shear zone cut ting rocks ranging in composition, from gabbroic anorthosites to anorthositic gabbros which have been intensely altered and deformed by at least two tectonometamorphic events. Both the copper-bearing shear zone and its host rocks are cut by a large NE-striking gabbro dyke. Most of the known mineralization is found east of the dyke, but two deep exploration holes have shown that the down dip extension is present to the west of the dyke. The mineralized shear varies from one to 15 metres in width, strikes around 010° and dips from 70° to 80° to the west, and has been tested for a length of 700 metres. The wall rocks are usually chloritized and silicified. Mineralization is characterized by chalcopyrite, pyrite, molybdenite, magnetite, and sphalerite occurring mainly as the matrix to quartz-carbonate breccias in the "main" shear zone. The predominant sulphides are pyrite and chalcopyri te as crystals or fragments. The brecciated mineralized shear shows evidence that there was at least one remobilization of the shear and it is suggested that copper-bearing fluids invaded the shear during its remobilization. The exact timing and source of mineralization are not known. Up to February 1984, 38 holes had been drilled to outline indicated reserves to a depth of 450 m of 1,5 million tonnes grading approximately 4% copper, 0.34 gm, gold and 13.71 gm silver per tonne. It is believed that there is considerable reserve potential in the block west of the gab bro dyke, the down dip extension of the main zone.

Sylvite of Canada, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., operates an 8000 TPD potash mine and refinery located nine miles North East of Rocanville, Saskatchewan. Prior to Hudson Bay&apos;s entry in 1968 into potash mining and refining, it was one of the more traditional and conservative Canadian Mining Companies whose principal business had been for many years a successful copper-zinc mining and smelting operation located at Flin Flon, Manitoba. The potash reserves being mined by Sylvite were acquired through the acquisition of Francana Oil and Gas. This acquisition was at the time when several major potash mines were being developed or had recently been brought into production in the Province. These mines are owned by either very substantial Canadian Mining Companies or Multi-National Mining Companies with considerable potash mining experience. At that time, it became very apparent because of the new mines coming into production, potash mining and refining would quickly become a very competitive industry. Because of long term considerations, Hudson Bay decided to proceed with the development of its potash reserves, recognizing the Mine and Refinery would have to be the most advanced available in order to successfully operate. This report deals with the mining operation at Sylvite and the degree of success Sylvite has achieved.

There is an old saying in Canada: "Mines are made as much as discovered." What follows is Young&apos;s perception of his experience developing and financing the Cochrane Hill gold mine project. In 1974, I came back from rutile and zircon exploration and mining in Australia. I became interested in a copper, lead, and zinc project in the Bathurst District, New Brunswick. Much field work had already been done but I was convinced that a reinterpretation of the geophysical work left room to enlarge on the known mineralization. So, with my own money I put a property deal together, found an underwriter willing to raise $100,000, and had a lawyer produce a prospectus. The prospectus was ultimately accepted for filing by the Ontario Securities Commission and I acquired funding and began work. It did not take many drill holes to determine that the interpretation was not geologically valid. However, while drilling was going on, geophysical and geochemical explorations indicated interesting anomalous zones elsewhere on the property. But by now the base metal market climate had soured and the $50,000 I had left was not enough to evaluate the new results. So I decided to farm out the property. A data folio was produced and the property was optioned to a major mining company, with Northumberland Mines Ltd. retaining a 20% free, carried interest. By 1976, the market for junior issues was so bad no under¬writer would even talk to a geologist and I still had the $50,000 in the bank and was looking for something to initiate. A Project That Went Nowhere Market research indicated that the Toronto area imported fine calcium carbonate fillers from Georgia, Alabama, and Vermont. I was aware of the specs and the fact that there is a large marble belt in Eastern Ontario. After some prospecting, I found an interesting deposit. The product was slightly high in silica and low on brightness. Research work eliminated the silica and corrected the brightness. So, with insufficient money we launched a feasibility study. This included diamond drilling, bulk sampling, special fine grinding and air classification tests, and an in-depth market survey. Our product was as good or better than those on the market. Our advantage was that delivery could be made by a two-hour truck haul to the customer. The present system of rail delivery had many problems, especially in winter. Despite everything looking rosy, we ran into a stone wall. The underwriters were singularly unimpressed because the public saw little glamour in a substance most people had never heard of. The issue would have been difficult-if not impossible-to sell. Banks and government agencies took the position that if we could get long term take-or-pay contracts then they would lend the required capital. None of the suppliers, however, would even consider a contract until production had begun and they could evaluate the production material. It was a classic "catch 22" situation. I have gone into this in some detail to show how tough the industrial mineral market can be. We eventually optioned this calcium carbonate property to a major corporation. The option agreement would give us a free, carried 15% and the right to buy up to 40% for contributing 25% of the production costs. But the experience left my company in poor financial shape. To survive, I think the entrepreneur-geologist must always have at least one project in reserve, an emergency plan. I had been searching out a new project to work on, after the calcium carbonate option was wrapped up. It was gold. Gold intrigued me and I knew quite a bit about Nova Scotian gold. I felt that with any rise in price, many of the former high-grade gold mines would have interesting potential for the larger, low grade portions of the deposits. That is how I happened on Cochrane Hill, where much work had been done in the early 1970s when gold as $4.82/g ($150/ oz). This time my timing was good. No sooner had Northumberland signed an option agreement than gold prices started to rise. In six months, they went to $27.331g ($850/oz). Even so, financing gold prospects in early 1980 was still not easy. It had been years since gold financing had been undertaken. A whole new generation of investors, with no knowledge of gold mining, had grown up. So, with accounting and legal council, we decided on a semiprivate "seed money" offering. Under the new Ontario Securities Act, this was a new-and partly tax sheltered-concept. At the time, it was very innovative.

"In 2015, the estimated value of nonfuel mineral production in the United States decreased by 3 percent from that in 2014 (Table 1), mainly as a result of decreased metal and metallic mineral prices, especially iron ore, copper and precious metals. Lower metal prices were attributed to decreased consumption, especially in China and increased global inventories. Several U.S. metal mines were idled in 2015, including the only U.S. rare earths mine at Mountain Pass, CA. Downstream processors also were affected, with smelters and refiners either shutting down or idling production lines. Increases, however, took place in the value and quantity of production of industrial minerals, especially those used in the construction sector, including cement, construction sand and gravel and crushed stone. Trends in mineral-related sectors of the domestic economy, except for iron and steel manufacturing, aluminum manufacturing, coal mining and metals mining, all experienced growth (Table 2).Discussion of mine production is frequently segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as construction aggregates and other industrial minerals. Metals tend to have higher unit values but very low production quantities compared with those of industrial minerals, which have higher production quantities but are lower-valued materials, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the nonfuel minerals industry, the value of production is used rather than the tonnage produced. Tonnages of construction aggregates are orders of magnitude larger than those for most other mineral commodities thus making direct comparisons based on weight meaningless (Fig. 1).Mineral industry performanceThe estimated value of domestic nonfuel mineral production, including metals ($26.6 billion) and industrial minerals ($51.7 billion), in 2015 declined to a total of $78.3 billion, from $80.8 billion in 2014 (Table 1). However, as shown in Fig. 2, minerals remained fundamental to the United States economy, contributing to the real gross domestic product at several levels, including mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. Net exports of mineral raw materials and old scrap were $14.4 billion. Domestic raw materials, along with domestically recycled materials, were used to produce mineral materials worth $630 billion. These mineral materials, including aluminum, brick, copper, fertilizers and steel, and net imports of processed materials (worth about $32 billion) were, in turn, consumed by downstream industries with a value added to the gross domestic product estimated to be $2,490 billion."

Bolting the mine roof is one of the noisiest underground mining operations. The main contribution to the noise is the drilling of the roof bolt holes, especially drilling in hard rock. Previous research shows that the specific energy consumed in drilling bolt holes is inversely proportional to the bite depth (i.e., penetration per drill revolution). Less specific energy at a reasonably high bite depth means less energy is wasted in the drilling process for producing heat, bit wear and noise. Therefore, proper control of the drilling operation to achieve a reasonably higher bite depth can reduce drilling noise from its sources as a proactive noise control approach. In order to explore the feasibility and develop the proactive technology for reducing drilling noise, drilling tests have been conducted in laboratory settings. The preliminary results show that significant reduction in noise dose can be achieved by drilling in medium hard rock with uniaxial compressive strength of about 276 bars (4,000 psi) and at a reasonably high bite depth of about 4.6 mm/rev (0.18 in./rev). This paper presents the findings from laboratory experimental studies.

"A study conducted at 22 operating mines in the southern African region indicated that each mine employs about five management and improvement methods with roots in the manufacturing industry. All respondents reported the implementation of cost-saving initiatives, whereas 80% of the mines are affected by restructuring. TQM, Six Sigma, BPM, and TOC were found to be the most prevalent manufacturing management and improvement methods used. A mechanistic vs systemic evaluation of the suitability of these methods to bring about positive change in the industry suggested that complex, ever-changing mining systems are better served by a systemic flow-based approach, which is embedded in methods such as TOC, JIT, TPS, and Lean Production. These methods, however, lack industry presence, possibly because they do not effectively deal with the unique challenges associated with the mining environment. It is argued that successful mining business management and improvement depends on management’s ability to deal effectively with mining industry-specific requirements, the integration of the geologymining- plant system, and the implementation of systemic flow-based principles in all aspects of mining. IntroductionThe study aims to explore the use of manufacturing management and improvement methodologies in the southern African mining industry. Considering the unique challenges associated with mining operations, attention is given to the applicability of the most commonly used manufacturing methodologies in the tactical, operational, and strategic environments. The article endeavours to stimulate more research and debate in an unexplored field of study."

A numerical approach for modeling coupled Hydro-Mechanical fracture behavior in 2D is presented in this paper. This approach accounts for the strong dependence of the flow characteristics on fracture apertures and offers an anisotropic description of the flow propagation in the fracture. An interface finite element and a constitutive model are developed . In order to validate the applicability of the model to general geomechanic problems, 2D simulations were performed. Results show the good application of the mathematical model and the fundamental hydraulic role played by the fractures. In diesem Beitrag wird ein Stoffgesetz vorgeschlagen um hydromechanisches Kluftverhalten numerisch zu Modellieren. Dieser Vorgang nimmt die starke Abhängigkeit der Fliesseigenschaften von der Kluftöffnung mit in Anbetracht. Ein Interfaceelement und ein Stoffgesetz wurden entwickelt. Zum validieren der Anwendbarkeit dieses Modells wurden 2D Simulationen durchgeführt. Ergebnisse haben gezeigt dass das mathematische Model anwendbar ist und dass Klüfte eine fundamentale hydraulische Rolle spielen. Une approche numérique pour la modélisation du comportement couplé hydro-mécanique des fractures en 2D est présentée dans ce papier. Cette approche prend en compte la forte dépendance des caractéristiques du flux de fluide sur les ouvertures des fractures et présente une description anisotrope de la propagation du flux dans la fracture. Un élément fini d&apos;interface et un modèle constitutif sont développés. Dans le but de valider l&apos;applicabilité du modèle à des problèmes généraux de géomécanique, des simulations 2D ont été réalisées. Les résultats montrent la bonne application du modèle mathématique et le rôle hydraulique fondamental joué par les fractures.

Introduction Any person concerned with the welfare of mining in British Columbia cannot help being perturbed by the fact that the industry, to an alarming extent, is living on its capital. The great majority of mines and mining camps of today represent a heritage handed down by the prospectors of yesterday. It is true that mining engineers, geologists, mineral dressers, metallurgists, and their fellow scientists and engineers have played an honourable, indeed a vital, part in he1ping to make our producing mines, often after costly and extensive underground development and extended researches. It is also true that the mineralization at the Sullivan, Britannia, and Copper Mountain mines was all discovered before the turn of the century. Likewise the Cariboo, Bridge River, Hedley, Ymir, Rossland, Boundary, Slocan, Salmo, and Portland Canal mining areas, although they had not all been developed, were all known more than fifty years ago. Furthermore, every one of these camps owed its discovery and eventual exploitation to the fact that encouraging &apos; mineralization occurred at the surface. Where would the mining industry of British Columbia be today had those precious outcrops been buried beneath twenty to forty feet of glacial drift or other overburden? Anybody familiar with the geology and geography of British Columbia will probably agree that finding new mining camps is going to be an increasingly difficult and costly business: disappointments there will be in abundance. Nevertheless, most persons will probably also agree that other valuable mines and even mining camps await discovery by those who will prove resourceful and lucky enough to unearth them. It has become increasingly obvious to the authors of this paper that any new too1s which can aid either prospectors or engineers in their search for new orebodies should be welcome. This paper outlines our efforts to develop biogeochemistry and related techniques to the point where they may be considered as useful tools in the search for hidden mineralization.
