Filtration systems with disposable filter elements (DFEs) are used in the underground coal mining industry to control particulate matter emissions from diesel-powered permissible and nonpermissible coal mining equipment. This study was conducted in underground mine conditions to evaluate three types of high-temperature DFEs used in those filtration systems. The DFEs were evaluated for their effects on the concentrations and size distributions of diesel aerosols and concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Those effects were compared with the effects of a standard muffler. The experimental work was conducted directly in an underground environment using a unique diesel laboratory developed in an underground experimental mine. After an initial DFE degreening period, the filtration system with all three DFEs was found to be very effective at reducing total mass concentrations of aerosols in the mine air. The effectiveness of DFEs in filtering aerosol mass was found to be a function of the engine operating conditions. The efficiency of the new DFEs significantly increased with accumulation of operating time and buildup of diesel particulate matter in the porous structure of the filter elements. A single laundering process did not exhibit substantial effects on performance of the DFE elements. The effectiveness of DFEs in removing aerosols by number was strongly influenced by engine operating mode. The concentrations of nucleation mode aerosols in the mine air were found to be substantially higher for both DPFs and DFEs when the engine was operated at high-load modes than at low-load modes. Initial heating of certain DFEs resulted in visible white smoke and substantially elevated aerosol number concentrations. The effects of the DFEs on total nitrogen oxides (NOX) concentrations were found to be minor. The NO2 fraction was found to be generally lower for the DFEs than for the muffler. The engine-out NO2 fraction of the total NOX was found to be substantially higher for low-load modes than for high-load modes.

Mining in the state of Western Australia (WA) formally commenced in the 1840s, and over the ensuing 180 years has evolved to be the epicentre of the Australian mining industry and a significant contributor to the national economy. The lithology of WA is replete with mineralisation that hosts uranium and ‘critical minerals’ required for the global renewable energy sector. The state’s first uranium mine is under development, and high levels of activity are occurring in the state’s nascent critical minerals sector, with 168 WA-based companies pursuing rare earth-bearing minerals, 51 of which are actively drilling on their tenements. WA’s mineral deposits typically contain levels of the naturally occurring radionuclides (NORs) thorium-232 and uranium-238 that are elevated above the global crustal average. Workers are exposed to NORs during the mining and mineral extraction processes, and radiation doses that exceed applicable exposure standards may eventuate. The research traces the history of worker radiation doses from 1977 to 2020, finding the maximum dose was 163.4 mSv, more than eight times the current derived annual dose limit. Whilst 93.5 per cent of all workers received doses of less than 5.0 mSv per annum, the potential for elevated doses is ever-present as witnessed by 10.3 mSv reported in 2009/2010. The increase in activity coincides with a revision of the dose coefficients (DCs) associated with the intake of radionuclides. The research evaluates the revised DCs and forecasts doses from inhalation of radioactive dusts will nearly double, and lead to workers receiving doses exceeding 5 mSv for the first time since 2009/2010. The research finds that the current regulatory framework is fit-for-purpose. However, inter-agency relationships, and the capacity of the regulator to effectively regulate the current and future number of mining operations is questioned. The mining industry is vulnerable to capability and capacity constraints – but has failed to respond to issues in relation to competent radiation safety officers first raised by the Winn Inquiry (Winn, Mathews and Tough, 1984). Disconcertingly, monitoring of worker exposures to NORs reached a nadir in 2021, raising questions as to the veracity of worker doses reported to the regulatory agency. The research recommends personal dust sampling be prioritised.

In another part of this issue we have reported the results of some test results made upon one of the safety powders. It will pay every c o n t r a c t o r, miner, or user of explosives in any form to carefully re a d the article re f e r red to. Dynamite has done a gre a t work in the service of man, as did black powder before it; but its i n h e rent dangers are admitted by all and are proved by the long list of deaths and injuries, and destruction to property which annually occur through its use. Why should we continue to use an explosive that annually kills and maims hund reds of men, when others are available which are equally powerful, no more expensive and far less liable to accidental discharg e ? Dynamite when first manufacture d is pure and comparatively safe; but most unfortunately it does not always stay pure; it “rots,” and then it is exceedingly dangerous. More than this, the explosive part of dynamite is a liquid, nitro - g l y c e rine, which is absorbed or soaked up by sawdust, wood pulp or the like. So long as this liquid nitro - glycerine remains pure and remains “soaked up,” or absorbed t h e re is little danger. It has been found, however, that the nitro - g l y cerine leaks under certain conditions. During thawing it fre q u e n t l y leaks out of the stick, or if it becomes wet the water causes the n i t ro-glycerine to leak out. In either case free liquid nitro - g l y c e r i n e escapes, and in that free state it may be exploded by any very slight shock. Nor is this all, if a stick of frozen dynamite be bro k e n a c ross it has been found by tests that the frozen nitro - g l y c e r i n e w h e re thus broken is very sensitive to shocks afterward .

The empirical equilibrium constantsd the heat of reaction for the reduction have been determined from 300° to 500°C. The mechanisms of the oxidation of uranium and magnesium from dilute bismuth solutions have been investigated. The kinetics of some of the reactions were affected by air adsorbed on the uranium oxides. THE Liquid Metal Fuel Reactor studied at Brook-haven National Laboratory uses a solution of uranium in bismuth as the fuel. Corrosion and stability problems require that the fuel solution contain corrosion inhibitors and deoxidants. Of the additives tested, magnesium has been found to be the best deoxidant and zirconium the best corrosion inhibitor in bismuth. Some experiments1 indicate that magnesium may play a secondary role in increasing the effectiveness of zirconium in inhibiting corrosion. The work reported here was intended to determine the relative concentrations of Mg and U required to prevent oxidation of the uranium fuel in the event of an air leak. In addition, an attempt was made to identify some of the mechanisms of the oxidation and reduction reactions occurring in the liquid bismuth solutions. EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus and Procedure—The equipment shown in Fig. 1 was designed so that the reaction kinetics could be studied as functions of temperature, melt composition, pressure, and flow rate. At the start of a run, the 10-liter bell jar (F) is removed by opening the bottom Dresser fitting (L), and the bismuth and additives are placed in a pyrex crystallizing dish (I). The bell jar is replaced, the system is evacuated to 10-5 to 10-6 mm Hg and then the heater (J) is turned on. When the selected temperature is reached, the oxidizing gas is admitted to the system to the desired pressure as read on the manometer (D). Gas is introduced through the slide tube (Q) which has a pyrex frit (R) sealed to its bottom. Stirring is accomplished by immersing the end of the tube in the melt. To maintain a constant pressure under flow the input and evacuation rates must be equalized. To obtain this condition stopcock (C) is closed and flowmeters (B) are matched. The reaction is "stopped" by closing the inlet flowmeter and quickly evacuating the system. To obtain a liquid metal sample, the system is evacuated with the sampler positioned near the surface of the liquid. The sampler, Fig. 2, is then immersed until its thermocouple reading matches thermocouple (G) Fig. 1. The system is then pressurized with helium which forces the solution through the frit. Twenty to 30 min elapsed between the time the system was evacuated and sampled. During evacuation and pressurization of the system, the temperature variations did not exceed ± 5°C. While bubbling occurred the temperature remained constant to within 1/2 oC. The volume of the equipment was determined by adding a known volume of air at atmospheric pressure to the evacuated system and noting the resulting pressure.

Fractional distillation is the most important process in the commercial refining of petroleum. The same procedure, conducted on a small scale, is the basis of a number of analytical methods of wide application in the petroleum laboratory. The Bureau of Mines has studied apparatus and procedure for the distillation analysis of petroleum, and this report is presented as a record of developments up to the present time. The work is incomplete, but the extensive information that has been obtained to date is made available as a guide in handling laboratory distillation problems. The analytical distillation of petroleum is commonly made to determine range of boiling points or to separate the oil. into fractions for detailed examination, or both. When only one of these two ends is sought the procedure involved is notably simpler than when, as is more common, information is required regarding both boiling range and properties of fractions. Moreover the degree of minuteness of measurement and the accuracy of the data required from analytical distillations differ considerably. Often the simplest sort of comparative figures are satisfactory; other tests require complicated and highly tedious procedure. No one distillation method is universally applicable, and it is impossible for anyone group of investigators to foresee all the different kinds of requirements that may occur in the industry.

Expansion and the economic growth in the southwestern region of Missouri necessitated the expansion of State Route 249 and the construction of a new interchange to provide service to the Joplin, Missouri area. The project is located above a former lead and zinc mine in Jasper County, Missouri and includes a five bridge interchange connecting State Route 249 and US Route 171. The variable subsurface conditions, both natural and manmade, prompted the design team to use ground improvement via grouting and small diameter micropiles to provide support for several of the bridge foundations on the project. The scope of work included mine shaft closures, 56,000 ft of overburden and rock drilling, 11,139 ft of micropiles, 524 cy of balanced/stabilized high mobility grouts, and over 8,700 cy of low mobility grout. The selection of the grout used was based on the actual subsurface conditions. Low mobility grout (LMG) was used in voided conditions and for closure of the mine shafts encountered during the excavation. High mobility grout (HMG) was used in fractured rock with the goal of improving the mechanical properties of the rock underneath the future bridge footings and controlling grout volumes during micropile installation. The split spacing method was utilized for both LMG and HMG holes. Geology of the project site subsurface consisted of extremely variable bedrock with strong to very strong limestone, chert, breccia, extremely weak shale, and weak to strong sandstone. Previous activities associated with the mining disturbance (such as partial filled vertical mine shafts, shallow and deep mine horizons, modified hydrology including artesian conditions) further complicates the site subsurface conditions. Real time monitoring and recording of all drilling and grouting parameters was conducted to assist in the evaluation of in-situ geological properties of the site in order to modify the ground improvement and micropile program as necessary. This paper will discuss the design and execution of the ground improvement and micropile program. The project is an excellent example of the use of multiple ground improvement and foundation support techniques combined with real time data analysis to provide a foundation support solution for a complex geological environment.

First in a projected series on the use of flexible liners for support of underground mine openings, this report presents information obtained from an extensive review of the literature on this subject. It also includes results of some preliminary test work by the Bureau of Mines. Investigations thus far indicate that flexible liners offer numerous advantages over rigid-type sup-ports, By deforming in the direction of the applied stress, the stresses are redistributed from the liner to the surrounding material. The corresponding buildup of passive resistance in the direction of diametric extension causes an equalization of stresses around the liner, thereby enabling the liner to carry loads in a more efficient manner. However, additional experimental data are needed to establish design criteria that will permit maximum utilization of the flexible liner concept in mining. Testing of small-scale models, accompanied by measurement of free-field stresses in material surrounding the model, is recommended as the most suit-able approach to the problem. The experimental procedures necessary to such an approach are outlined in detail and a statistical design for the experiments is proposed. The report also describes a device developed by the Bureau for measuring free-field soil pressures to 1,000 psi and a technique for evaluating the response of the device.

Indonesia has enormous mineral resources. Its population of more than 180 million people inhabit most of the more than 13,000 islands. The country is becoming a significant economic power in Southeast Asia. Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world. Java, its largest island, is the most densely populated area. The country's diversity is its strength. However, as only an estimated 16 million inhabitants speak bahasa Indonesia as the first language, communication problems endure. Although burdened with large debts, Indonesia has been able to service the debts better than most developing nations. This has given it high credibility and, with increasing frequency, creditor nations compete to provide Indonesia loans with the most the most favorable financial terms. Recent rising prices of petroleum crude has further improved Indonesia's economic status. It maintains a policy of stable oil prices that it promotes in OPEC, of which it is an influential member. As a result, Indonesia is becoming increasingly attractive to foreign investors. The South East Consortium for International Development (SECID) is made up of 34 universities in the southeastern US and Indonesian partners Lembaga Afiliasi Penelitian dan Industri (LAPI) of the Institute of Technology in Bandung, West Java. SECID bid successfully against international competition to develop new academic programs and campus for the Sriwijaya University UNSRI) in Palembang, South Sumara. "Hydrocyclone-thickener circuit is a promising solution to enhance the dewatering efficiency in mineral industries. The challenges in the circuit is reducing particle size in the thickener feed and the good feature is a rise in the retention time of sediments in the thickener. In this work, the effect of particle size, bed depth and residence time on the thickener performance were investigated. In this order, pilot scale columns were employed at Sarcheshmeh and Shahrebabak copper complexes. Furthermore, the influence of residence time was differentiated due to the variations in the bed depth and settling flux. Moreover, a new approach was introduced to estimate solids residence time in the thickener. results indicated that with smaller particles that are introduced to the column, the bed density as well as thickener discharge solids concentration dropped significantly. It was found that thickener discharge solids concentration fell from 59.6 to 33.8 % with reducing particle size from 130 to 22 µm in the settling flux of 20 t/m2/day. Additionally, it was found that longer residence time and deeper bed resulted in an increase in the thickener performance while the bed depth has a stronger effect. It was proved that employing a hydrocyclone prior to the thickener resuted in an increase in the dewatering efficiency.INTRODUCTION Thickeners are widely employed in mineral industries to recycle tailings and concentrate water content. A limited fraction of suspension water content is recycled using a thickener. For instance, about 50 percent of tailings water content could be recycled using a shallow bed thickener during copper processing. Since the scarcity of global water resources became more serious, the demand for improving dewatering efficiency in mineral industries became more significant [1]. A number of solutions were recommended to enhance dewatering efficiency of thickeners including optimization of current thickeners, employing deep bed thickeners and utilizing thickener-filter or hydrocyclone-thickener circuits. Optimization of existing thickeners is essential, however, it does not meet the significant demand for recycled water. The application of deep bed thickeners (known as paste thickeners) has been rising in the mineral industries [2] due to a higher dewatering efficiency while its costs is remarkable."

Iron ore beneficiation plants are facing economic pressures to treat more challenging ore types, improve efficiency and improve product quality. Better control and stability of the plant process in the face of increasing feed ore variability has been a goal for many of the operations facing these challenges.Prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) technology has proven to be a successful measurement technique within an iron ore beneficiation plant. PGNAA was first developed in the early 1980s for the measurement of the elemental composition of bulk materials. Today, PGNAA technology is applied for elemental analysis within the iron ore industry on both bulk materials and slurries.Traditional composite sampling throughout the wet iron ore beneficiation process provides a delayed measurement of average properties but does not capture the true variability of the process in real-time. As such this is a limiting factor towards stabilisation and optimisation of the process. A PGNAA analyser provides real-time slurry elemental analysis of feed, concentrate and tails streams within the processing plant. The analytical data from the analyser can be exploited with a control strategy to correct and stabilise the plant on a much shorter time scale, delivering significant economic benefits and greater operational flexibility. The economic benefits include more stable product quality and a reduction in composite sampling and laboratory costs.Some example results will be presented from the Vale Vargem Grande iron ore beneficiation plants, which are utilising a six stream multiplexed Thermo Scientific PGNAA Slurry Analyser.CITATION:Noble, G, Stabile, A, Portes, E and Roberto, J, 2017. The new Woodrow Wilson Bridge (WWB) will replace the existing bridge over the Potomac River to connect Alexandria, Virginia to Prince Georges County, Maryland. The new WWB will extend approximately 1.1 miles across the river, with a 367-ft long bascule span in the main river channel where the water depth is about 36 ft. The subsurface soil profile consists of up to 50 ft of a soft organic silty clay layer that is very vulnerable to scour, underlain by a deep deposit of hard sandy clay. Foundation construction in the Potomac River required the use of cofferdams to allow structural concrete work to be performed in the dry. This paper will the present the types of cofferdams used to construct the foundations for the WWB replacement project. The bridge is primarily comprised of fixed spans in relatively shallow water and a bascule span over a navigation channel in relatively deep water. Foundation construction included the installation of 48? to 72? open end steel pipe piles and cast-in-place concrete pile caps. To achieve the desired bridge appearance, pile caps were required to extend below the water surface and below the existing river bottom in shallow water locations. Conventional steel sheet pile cofferdams with tremie concrete seal were used to construct fixed span, shallow water piers. Selection of deep water bascule span foundation cofferdams was governed by several factors including contraction scour, environmental considerations and cost. Potomac River cofferdams, i.e., relatively shallow depth cofferdams that are supported by the foundation piling were selected. This cofferdam system provided a shallow profile which minimized contraction scour and the amount of filling in the river. Design issues include load selection and cofferdam stability in very soft alluvial soils. Construction issues include erection sequence, tremie concrete mix design and placement procedures.

This paper is derived from a document that compiles autogenous and semi-autogenous mill installations worldwide, through the end of 2010. Updates have been solicited from all major mill manufacturers and most have responded. A review of AG/SAG mills sold to date and in the last five years indicates that the AG/SAG mill market is very healthy and the trend is larger diameter mills with high diameter-to-length ratios. Ring motors (gearless) are the preferred drives for large mills even though the power transmitted through a gear drive is expected to near 11,000 kW per pinion in the near future.

This report presents the results of an investigation of inclined roof bolts, anchored over pillars, in room-and-pillar coal mines susceptible to shear failures of the roof. Although the field data do not support this contention, it is believed on the basis of analyses and other work that inclined roof bolts do offer potential under some circumstances.

Bob Woolsey was born in 1936 in the state of Georgia and grew up to be a man of great integrity, vitality, wisdom and charm, totally neutral on matters of race, gender, and religion. A true Southern Gentleman in every sense of the word. His passing on July 9, 2008, the victim of an automobile collision, left an empty space in the hearts of his family, and his many friends and colleagues throughout the globe. The posthumous award of the Moore Medal of the International Marine Minerals Society, to Dr. J. Robert Woolsey for Excellence in the Development of Marine Minerals, is a well deserved tribute to this man who spent the last 30 years of his professional career heavily involved in research and development of marine minerals on an international basis. He first came to my attention in Burma in 1979 where, as a newly appointed technical advisor to the United Nations Development Program Offshore Exploration for Tin, I had to fill the shoes of an almost legendary figure "Dr. Bob", who accompanied by his wife Maxine had spent the previous two years initiating the program. Bob had planned to completion the construction in Singapore of a unique drilling vessel the RV Sea Drill, a spud anchored, twin-hulled barge, mounted with a Becker Drill, and designed for sampling alluvial tin deposits in the coastal waters of the Mergui Archipelago in the Andaman Sea, off Tenasserim. He had also designed and built, with the help of his side -kick Bruce Jernigan, a barge mounted dressing plant for reducing and concentrating the drill samples. The adventures of Dr. Bob in transporting the equipment to the drilling site in monsoon weather and the transfer of the drill barge from the Malaysian port of Ranong across the strait to Victoria Point in Burma with a mutinous crew will remain in the hearts and minds of his Burmese colleagues for many a long year. On his return to the States he joined, in 1980, the faculty of the University of Mississippi (UM) as assistant Professor of Geology and Geological Engineering. His prior experience in private industry and the United Nations had focused on marine mineral resources and related environmental engineering projects in Africa, South America, the Mediterranean, the South Pacific as well as south east Asia, working with dredges, mining for alluvial tin, gold, diamonds and industrial minerals. He continued to work in the area of marine minerals at UM, making a name for himself as Director of the Mississippi Mineral Resources Institute (MMRI).

"For decades, pillar recovery accounted for a quarter of all roof fall fatalities in underground coal mines. Studies showed that a miner on a pillar recovery section was at least three times more likely to be killed by a roof fall than other coal miners. Since 2007, however, there has been just one fatal roof fall on a pillar line. This paper describes the process that resulted in this historic achievement. It covers both the key research findings and the ways in which those insights, beginning in the early 2000s, were implemented in mining practice.One key finding was that safe pillar recovery requires both global and local stability. Global stability is addressed primarily through proper pillar design, and became a major focus after the 2007 Crandall Canyon mine disaster. But the most significant improvements resulted from detailed studies that showed that local stability, defined as roof control in the immediate work area, could be achieved with three interventions:• Leaving an engineered final stump, rather than extracting the entire pillar;• Enhancing roof bolt support, particularly in intersections, and• Increasing the use of Mobile Roof Supports (MRS)A final component was an emphasis on better management of pillar recovery operations. This included a focus on worker positioning, as well as on the pillar and lift sequences, MRS operations, and hazard identification. As retreat mines have incorporated these elements into their Roof Control Plans, it has become clear that pillar recovery is not ""inherently unsafe.""The paper concludes with a discussion of the challenges that remain, including the problems of rib falls and coal bursts.INTRODUCTIONPillar recovery has always been an integral part of underground coal mining in the US. When room-and-pillar methods are employed, large blocks of coal in the form of pillars are initially left in place to support the weight of the overburden. Unless these pillars are subsequently recovered, the coal they contain will never be mined."

This report describes work performed and results obtained for the technical and economic feasibility study of oil production by mining methods. The characteristics of oil fields which would make them amenable to mining techniques were identified. An inventory of known U.S. oil fields that offer this potential was collated. This was further divided into fields having potential for underground and surface mining systems development. Several candidate fields that fit particular underground and surface mining system types were then selected. Conceptual mining systems were designed for the selected fields. Five underground and four surface methods were chosen. Costs of oil production were estimated for these selections. The impact of oil mining an the environment was also considered.

"Earth provides natural resources, such as fossil fuels and minerals that are vital for human life. As the global demand grows, especially for strategic minerals, commodity prices rapidly rise. Thus there is an identifiable risk of increasing supply shortage for minerals. Hence a major element in a long-term economic strategy must be, to ensure security of supply for these strategic minerals. In this rapidly changing global economic landscape, deep sea mining has gone from a distant possibility to a likely reality within just a decade.Although deep sea minerals extraction was investigated in the 1970’s, it was abandoned because of changing commodity economics, advances in on-land exploration techniques, growing concern on environmental impact, and political and legal aspects with regard to ownership issues. The developmental data from those days, if still available, are not adequate to allow engineering and building of an integral system for extraction of deep sea minerals without additional R&D work. Introduction The weight of a Mining Truck can be affected by field modifications, the selection of items like tires, rims or even the conditions in which it operates. Truck performance and the compliance with a number of ISO standards, e.g. braking, steering and ROPS are dependent on truck weight. It is critical that truck owners understand the impact of changes in weight1. What makes this even more difficult for owners to evaluate is that there is no standard terminology or definitions for Mining Truck weights. This paper discusses and defines weight terminology, how it applies to performance and standards and the impact on the application of Mining Trucks.
