As fractures are propagated through rocks, energy is absorbed near the extending crack tip. Apparent surface energies for several rocks have been measured by cleavage under dynamic con-ditions. At nominal crack velocities from 0.5 to 500 in (min, measurements showed that fractures propagated in discrete jumps. Calculated surface energies and moduli were relatively insensitive to nominal rate of cleavage. in another set of experiments, rocks were cleaved under high confining stresses. The rocks were submerged in low leak-off fluids which formed a filter cake on the freshly cleaved surfaces (similar to the hydraulic lracturing process). Apparent surface energies were increased substantially as the surrounding fluid pressure was increased. Moduli in bending increased significantly upon application of the first 1,000 psi but were insensitive to stress level at greater pressures. INTRODUCTION For almost 20 years, hydraulic fracturing processes have been utilized effectively to stimulate oil and gas wells. During this period, some process improvements have resulted from studies of fracture orientation, mechanics of fracturing, areas generated, conductivities of cracks, etc. Yet many questions remain concerning the conditions and pressures needed during fracture propagation. In this paper we will report additional studies of the mechanics of fracture extension. It was shown previously3 that large rock samples could be cleaved under controlled conditions so as to measure the apparent surface energy (that amount of energy absorbed per unit area of new surface created). In this paper we consider the effects of two additional factors on surface energies, viz.: (1) effect of cleavage rate and (2) effect of confining stress level. THEORY Cleavage experiments were conducted on rock samples similar to that illustrated in Fig. 1. Blocks of rock several inches wide, 2- to 3-in. thick, and up to 3 ft in length were grooved longitudinally with shallow guide slots. A crack was initiated and allowed to extend along the web as the top of the rock specimen was pulled (or pushed) apart. Auxiliary equipment permits the measurement of (1) force applied at the top, (2) separation at the top and (3) crack length. (Further experimental details will be given in the next section.) The rock beams created by the crack are considered ton be cantilever beams. The deflection (or separation of the rock beams) at any point is calculated 4,5 by the beam Eq. 1.

"INTRODUCTION Considerable interest has been shown in the prospective use of Diesel-powered haulage equipment in both coal and non-coal mines. Foreign technical magazines have devoted considerable space to discussions of the use of Diesel locomotives in European mines and some mention of it has been made in technical papers in the United States. The Bureau of Mines has extensively tested the gases produced in the exhaust of the Diesel engine under various atmospheres and conditions of use; it has established a schedule of tests for permissibility of Diesel engines for use in underground coal mines, including, gassy or dusty mines.This publication provides information as to the successful use of Diesel-powered equipment underground workings in the United States and Europe, briefly discusses the characteristics of some of the toxic gases found in the exhaust of Diesel engines, and points out that Diesel-powered equipment can be used with reasonable safety in underground minus if necessary and entirely feasible precautions are taken."

This report deals with information regarding a new Medium Frequency (MF) Wireless Communication System for underground mines. This new telecommunication system works on low loss electromagnetic wave propagation modes which allow it to provide quality radio communications almost anywhere in a mine. Tests show the MF system can provide improved safety and managerial control, increased productivity, better organizational team-work and reduced maintenance cost; furthermore, MF's unique design allows for easy installation at a minimum cost. This paper covers the following: 1) MF design plan, 2) Overview of mine radio communications systems, 3) Preparations needed for designing an MF system, 4) MF equipment, 5) MF installation, 6) MF design considerations, 7) MF design specifications, and 8) Recommendations dealing with MF system. Experiments in four mines are illustrated to demonstrate the success and viability of the MF system. The mines range from small (500 tons/day) to large (67,000 tons/day) capacity and represent several different mining methods. The MF Wireless Communication System represents an advancement in mining communication and the groundwork for other advanced mine systems.

[The purpose of the study is to investigate cases of subsidence over abandoned mined-out areas of the Pittsburgh Coal identified from published and unpublished sources and to determine through a consideration of the geology, topography, climate, mining activity, and evidence at ground surface, what mechanisms control subsidence .and under what circumstances it takes place. The study wan performed it two phases, the first to identify all documented incidents of subsidence in mined-out areas of the Pittsburgh coal Region; and the second, to study a particular portion of the region in detail, collecting pertinent data relative to the sites within, characterizing roil the nature of the subsidence and its economic consequences, and determining the applicability of the findings to other areas whore similar problems with the collapse of abandoned miner have been encountered.]

From the title of this chapter the reader could expect an attempt to outline the anticipated shape of things to come, mineralwise. We have no crystal ball and if we possessed one we could claim no expertness in its use. In the first place no one can tell the future status of man. No one has any way of knowing to what extent peace will prevail, nor to what extent changes may occur in national sovereignties or forms of government or in international relationships. So future man is an uncertainty. Nor can we predict new developments that may result in significant changes in man's status or in the mineral industry or both. If, for example, this chapter had been written in the middle 1930's, nearly everything that has happened since in the field of atomic energy would have been missed. Yet what a vast change this has made in the status of man! Also the changes in the mineral industry have been important. A writer would have been bold indeed had he prophesied that uranium would play such an important role. But we need not confine our foggy vision to the atomic energy field. The steep rise in the use of aluminum, titanium, and germanium reflects the unpredictable in what may be thought of as the more normal pursuits. This should not discourage one from using the past and currently observable trends as bases for limited predictions. To do this, however, it is desirable to make certain assumptions about man's status without even a pretense that these assumptions have a high probability of fulfillment: 1. Only minor changes will occur in the geographical boundaries of the nations of the world. 2. World War III will not take place in the near future. 3. As a consequence of (2), man will not destroy himself by wanton use of atomic weapons. 4. Disarmament will take place, if at all, gradually rather than all at one time. Under the above assumptions the world will enjoy a period of relative peace even though the status may be one of an armed truce. The assump-

OCCURRENCES of salt in Alberta have been mentioned and described by the writer in 1929 (l) and by Cole in 1930 (2). Brine springs occur at a number of places along the valley of Athabaska river north of latitude 56 degrees, and also on the south margin of Salt prairie, twenty-five miles west of Fitzgerald in the vicinity of the 60th parallel of latitude, which is the boundary between Alberta and the Northwest Territories. These salt springs were visited by Sir James Richardson in 1820, and in the same year D. W. Harmon stated that " ... clown Salt river there are several places where almost any quantity of excellent dean white salt may be taken with as much ease as sand along the seashore" (3). One hundred years later, in 1920, when the writer first visited these springs, the "dean white salt" which had accumulated about the springs was about 400 tons ( 4). This paper deals with a thick deposit of rock-salt which has been proved by drilling in the vicinity of McMurray. Particular attention will be given to a well drilled at Waterways early in 1936 by Industrial Minerals, Limited, when a continuous bed of rock-salt was penetrated with a thickness of 199 feet. As this paper is being presented, a salt plant is being completed and a production well is being drilled at the plant. < is salt deposit is in the vicinity of McMurray, close to the junction of the Clearwater and Athabaska rivets, in township 89, range 9, west of the 4th meridian. McMurray is about 240 miles northeast from Edmonton. As shown on Figure 1, Clearwater river, which rises at Methy portage, in Saskatchewan, enters Athabaska river at McMurray. Some three miles above the mouth of Clearwater river, the Hangingstone enters from the southwest. Waterways, where the latest salt development has taken place, is situated at the end of the Northern Alberta railway, a distance of 304 miles from Edmonton. This railway reaches the bottom of the Clearwater valley at Draper station, about 3 miles east of Waterways and near the mouth of Deep creek. The Draper bituminous sand plant is approximately half a mile east of Draper station. About one mile south of the townsite of McMurray, Horse river enters the Athabaska from the east.

The following review covers published information on pressing of metal powders at room temperature. Only those operations are considered which occur between the time the powder is filled into the cavity and the compact is ejected from the die. Thus, this review does not concern hot pressing, coining or sizing feed or flow problems, commercial presses nor designs. It was also necessary to disregard to a large extent the effect of pressing on subsequent operations and on properties after sintering. &apos;The pressing operation is considered independently in its function to compact loose metal powder into useful shapes which can subsequently be handled. There are some comments by the writer in connection with a few of the findings quoted in the literature in order to stimulate thought and discussion. The selection of references quoted in the text is in some cases arbitrary although an attempt was made to favor papers containing novel ideas, techniques or results which mag stimulate future research. In order to enable the reader to check further into the subjects mentioned, the original, rather extensive, bibliography is appended even though not all the references are touched on in the printed version of this review. The equipment used by various workers, for example a die design created by Bridgman,22 is very interesting. &apos;The die insert has a conical external surface. The vertical pressure exerted on the punch transmits itself to the die which in turn is pushed harder into its tapered retainer. Thus, the higher the pressure exerted on the punch, the higher also the pressure exerted inwards on the die inserts. Inasmuch as this pressure counteracts the internal pressure from the compact the two stresses balance each other so that it is possible to obtain tremendous pressures without breaking the die. The die collar was made from an oil hardening tool steel, heat treated to a tensile strength of some 300,000 psi. The die was closed at the bottom by a plug made from special tool steels. Bridgman found that there is no steel which will withstand a com-pressive stress of 700,000 psi without continuous slow flow or immediate fracture. Therefore, the only material suitable for use in the pressing punch was sintered carbide. In view of the ingenious design it was possible to use special tool steel as die material. Jones22 raises the question whether this method of pressing has practical application in powder metallurgy. Although these tremendous pressures cannot readily be utilized without many special precautions, the tapered die and retainer idea is believed to be useful even for lower pressures. La largeur de l?armature peut être modifiée selon les besoins du client entre 48 " et 64" de largeur totale, donc 2 sections de 24" à 32". Ceci permet à l?opérateur d?effectuer le démantèlement de l?équipement pour le déplacement dans les endroits restreints. Le déménagement d?un niveau à un sous-niveau devrait se faire dans un quart de travail de 8 heures. L?option de largeur permet au client de choisir un équipement adapté à son environnement de travail (1). La largeur de la table de forage peut être modifiée selon les besoins du client entre 48" et 96". Cette particularité permet une meilleure stabilité, et plus de précision dans le forage (2). Il y a 4 pattes hydrauliques à chaque coin pour la stabilisation lors de forage (3). La table de forage a 360° d?angle de forage sur 3 côtés du transporteur. La table peut sortir de chaque côté du transporteur de 40 ½" à partir du centre du transporteur pour faciliter la mise en place de la foreuse dans les endroits difficiles d?accès. La plage de forage est considérablement agrandie. Cette caractéristique qui fonctionne hydraulique, permet à l?opérateur de forer sans être obligé de changer la position du transporteur pour des changements de trous. Tous les types de foreuse peuvent être installés sur cette table de forage (4). Sa petite dimension lui permet d?accéder, par des monteries de 30" de diamètre, à des sites de travail de 2,5 mètres de hauteur et largeur. C?est un équipement adapté aux gisements filoniens. Ce genre de gisement est de moins en moins rentable pour les compagnies minières. La mécanisation des ces gisements va permettre de les rentabilisés en augmentant la productivité et la santé du travailleur, en réduisant la dilution (5). Les manettes de contrôle de la foreuse, les mouvements de la table de forage ainsi que le déplacement du transporteur ont été installés selon les recommandations d?un ergonome. Des recherches ont été effectuées par ce spécialiste sur les cas d?accident survenus avec l?utilisation de ce genre d?équipement. Il a déterminé les positions le plus confortable que l?opérateur doit prendre pour éviter les douleurs prolongées (6). Le système de roulement est composé de 4 roues pleines installées sur 4 planétaires de 9000 à 15000 livres de capacité munis chacun d?un moteur hydraulique. Des freins ont été installés sur les planétaires pour assurer la sécurité de l?opérateur et faciliter le positionnement du transporteur lors du forage. Des roues rétractables peuvent être installées pour faciliter l?accès sur rail (7). Ce transporteur peut être alimenté par une puissance électrique plutôt que par une puissance pneumatique. Cette puissance électrique est fournie par un Power Pack qui transforme l?énergie en puissance hydraulique. Ce type d?alimentation est employé lors du forage de développement, mais il peut aussi être utilisé pour le forage long trou. Cet avantage permet au client qui a un problème de pression d?air d?utiliser l?électricité. Par contre si vous utilisez l?électricité mais que dans un secteur isolé le gros courant électrique n?est pas accessible vous pouvez utiliser votre équipement en utilisant la puissance pneumatique. Le changement d?alimentation énergétique se fait facilement (8). Cet équipement est construit pour effectuer 4 types d?activités : forage de développement de niveau et sousniveau avec l?installation d?un bras porteur, forage et pose de câbles d?encrage pour soutènement de terrain, forage de production long trou et forage de monterie ascendante et descendante. L?avantage est que vous investissez dans un seul équipement au lieu de 2 ou 3. Cet avantage vous fait économiser dans votre budget d?équipement. En plus cet équipement est construit pour de dure travaux et ne contient aucun système électronique (9).

Mine safety and quality of life of miner working in underground mines depend to a large extent on mine illumination and communication. The provisioning of reliable, safe, and cost-effective illumination is critical, particularly in underground gassy coal mines. To prevent firedamp explosion by electrical switching operation in coal mining industry requires implementing intrinsically safe illumination circuit. The luminaire design also needs to be certified and installed properly. The current illumination systems installed inside mines require a lot of energy which is obtained from nonrenewable resources. In this work, the design and implementation of solar-powered optical fiber-based illumination are studied and implemented in the Jhanjra underground coal mine, Eastern Coalfield Limited, and a Li-Fi-based communication system for underground coal mines is proposed. Silicate optical fibers of various core diameters and numerical apertures are characterized for illumination applications and their efficiencies are reported. The possibility of achieving optical fiber-based solar, laser, and hybrid illuminations in underground mines is discussed. The design and fabrication of a Fresnel lens-based solar tracker for solar illumination are also presented. The optical fiber-based illumination system is installed in an underground coal mine and the illumination of over 70 lux is achieved at the work plane. Finally, optical fiber-based illumination and simultaneous basic Li-Fi communication are demonstrated and will be beneficial to the underground coal mining industry.

THE development of the North Lily ground, which lies in the East Tintic district, Utah,. about half a mile northwest of the famous Tintic Standard mine, was undertaken by the International Smelting Co. on purely geological reasoning. The geologic theory on which this work was based resulted from several years&apos; intensive study of the East Tintic district by the geological department of the International Smelt-ing Co., who were, during this period, indebted to many for valuable suggestions that were adopted and became part, of the gradually maturing concept. For example, E. J. Raddatz, president of the Tintic Standard Mining Co., first called attention to the significance of rhyolite alteration; J. W. Wade, assistant manager, contributed greatly to our knowledge of the great Tintic Standard orebodies; and so on all along. the line. In short, the ultimate theory embodies the aggregate experience and thought of all those most familiar with the area in question. The problem in brief was this: is the Tintic Standard deposit an isolated occurrence of ore, or are other ore deposits to be found in the vicinity? If the latter is the case, where can these others be looked for? The difficulty of the problem lay in the fact that most of the area is covered by rhyolite; beneath which lies the limestone in which the orebodies occur; so that the available evidence as to the structure of the formations, and, their mineralization; is of the slightest. The sav-ing features of the case, by means of which it proved possible to solve the problem, are three in number first, the rhyolite is pre-mineral and hence has been exposed to alteration by the mineralizing agencies; second, certain persistent dikes and fissures are con-tinuous through the rhyolite into the limestone below; and third, the extensive underground workings of the Tintic Standard gave a good basis for study of the sub-rhyolite structure and the occurrence of ore. The rhyolite overlies the Tintic Standard orebodies, and over them shows a large patch of brownish altera-tion. This patch proves to be due to chloritization and sericitization, which has spread out from certain zones of dikes, pebble-dikes and fissures. The dikes are com-posed of a light fine-grained rock which has been altered to an aggregate of quartz, alunite, and magnetite. They can be traced southwest to a common center in Big Hill, the entire mass of which is composed of the same material. The pebble-dikes, which consist of a mass of rounded pebbles, mainly quartzite, in a matrix ranging from the same quartz-alunite-magnetite rock as above to almost pure vein quartz, are closely asso-ciated with these light dikes, but in general extend farther northeast. They thus represent a specialized phase of the intrusive action of which Big Hill is the center. The brown chloritized rhyolite, then, is an alteration product due, in all. probability, to emana-tions closely associated with this phase. Since it coin-cides geographically with the Tintic Standard area of highly altered limestone, with its many great ore-bodies, it has been concluded, that it is the expression in the rhyolite of activities which have also altered and mineralized&apos; the underlying limestone.

"In California the history of tin mining began in Riverside County in 1853, with the discovery of the Temescal deposit. This deposit remained the only one with a production record until recent small shipments were made from Kern and San Bernardino Counties.According to the California State Division of Mines, Temescal's total output has been about 125 tons of tin, all of which was produced in 1891 and 1892. It was idle from 1892 to 1928.An extensive but unsuccessful development campaign carried on in 1928 and 1929 by the American Tin Corp. produced only half a ton of the metal, and the property again was idle until 1943, when an attempt to resume operations proved unsuccessful. After 1929 no production is recorded from California until 1944 end 1945, when small shipments of sorted ore from Kern County returned about 2 tons of tin and 1-1/3 tons was recovered from sorted ore and concentrates from San Bernardino County. The total output of tin from California has been less than 150 tons, and less than 4 percent of this was produced in the last 50 years, in spite of numerous attempts during that period to promote tin mines,So marked a scarcity of a metal essential in war makes any occurrence interesting. When some prospects were reported to the Bureau of Mines in July 1942, in a new field 10 miles east of Gorman, they were at once examined and the preliminary exploration by the owners closely followed. Eventually one was explored by bulldozing end diamond drilling as a joint project by the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey.To supplement this joint project, the authors undertook independently a general survey of tin in California - a survey designed to check reported occurrences and to bring their status up to date. In this work, the 37 places described in the text and spotted on the accompanying map, (fig. 1) were visited end sampled. Although traces of tin were found in many pieces, nothing that suggested a tin mine was found anywhere, and it is difficult to base much hope for appreciable future tin production upon anything found thus far in California."

The over-all apparent single-phase permeability of fracture-rock systems was studied using two different two-dimensional models. In a strict sense the results are applicable only to these models, yet may give some insight into real reseruoir behavior. The regular fracture-matrix model can have any number of regular fracture sets. All fractures within each set have the same orientation, width and spacing. The gross behavior is amlytically equivalent to that of an anisotropic permeable medium. In the heterogeneous fracture systems, individual fracture conductivities vary within a two-dinensioml network pattern. A computer program calculates the overall permeability after the conductivities are randomly placed in the network. The calculated permeability depends upon the distribution of these conductivities and the particular fracture pattern into which they are placed. Although detailed information on actual reseruoir fracture systems is not available, this study shows how some of the possible variables may affect obserued gross reservoir characteristics. INTRODUCTION Characteristics of reservoir rocks are determined by direct (core analysis) or indirect (logging and production tests) examination. Both methods, singly and together, are widely used in reservoir evaluations. For fractured reservoirs a problem exists in relating characteristics of cores to the in situ reservoir properties. Knowing fracture characteristics can be of value in determining production mechanisms. Because of the limitations of observation, the intimate details of a fractured rock system will never be known. One approach in analyzing fractures is to study the behavior of some conceptually simple models. The two models analyzed contain features which may be realistic, yet are mathematically tractable. Flow is considered in two dimensions only, with the plane of interest at right angles with the fractures. This concept represents the horizontal flow in a reservoir system with the fractures oriented vertically. Only single-phase, laminar flow is considered. The regular fracture-rock system permeability is calculable from a simple analytical expression. The heterogeneous system requires a computer program for calculating overall permeability.

The Wednesday Morning Session of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute was called to order by Albert Keenan of the Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Company, Denver, Colorado, in the absence of the President. He introduced Edward Prostel of the University of Wyoming Natural Resources Research Institute, Laramie, Wyoming, who spoke on "Coal Utilization Work at the University of Wyoming." (Please refer to the index for printed text of the paper.) Following Mr. Prostel&apos;s talk, R. Park Lamborn of the National Mine Service Company, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania asked Mr. Prostel two questions: (1) What -has been done in tar research? and (2) Has there been large scale research on brickets? Mr. Prostel stated that he could not say too much about the first question as this research was done in the petroleum department and he would prefer to have a chemist talk about it. As to the second question, the system of carbonization is a big project. There are many possibilities. At the University they are trying to do that in the same unit that produces the char. This system was introduced in Canada. The brickets are bound with sulphite liquor. Mr. Schloss asked Mr. Prostel to report on a project that they have been working on at the University, and Mr. Prostel stated that some time ago they began to experiment to see if it would be economically possible to dry coal at the mine (coal containing 30% moisture) and then ship it a distance of 130 miles to be used. Results are that it would be possible, but will require a considerable quantity. He felt it might be possible to operate such a scheme in a few years.

The materials containing copper which are refined in the United Statrs, are, for the most part, the natiye noppers of Lake Superior. IJntil quite recently but little pig copper Was made for sale, and that came principally from the pure sulphorous ores of New England and the Sonth, and was generally sdd to reSneries not far from the ore filrnaceu. A stnall aiuoiint found its way into the&apos;niarket which was produced either as the by-product of the treatment of gold and silver ores, or as the result of the treatment of impure copper ores; but both these grades, on account of the impurities they contained, were loolced on with stlspicion, and were not sought for. A11 the grtlGis of pig coppcr are sold by the unit of oopper contents, a great redtiction being made in the price when impurities are present. There are at the present time only three works which treat native copper, the two of the Detroit and Lake Superior copper Company, and the works of C:G. Hussey & Co., in Pittsburgh. There are a few works ivhich smelt sulphuroris ores and refine their pig; bo sides these t1le1-e arc a few siuall works where gig copper is refined uuly. Some of these purcIlase blscir copper, refine scrap, or simply refine such grades of ingot copper as are found in the market, but nlostly that from Lake Superior, for the purpose of getting it into swh shapes that can be handled cpmtriercially to advantage, such as in making large plates or high grades of wire fir electrical purposes. A nomher of such works are situated in the Xaugaturk Vatley aud elsewhcre in New England. Up to the time of the discovery of the mines on Lake Superior, only a very small quantity of native copper had ever been foond, not sufficient to justify the erection of worlrs fbr its special treatment. It had, besides, never been found in very large maweq so that the discovery of greabblocks of it presented serious difficulties, not oolp in mining it,-I- but in bringing it into a merchantable condit&apos;ion.
