The investigated area lies close to a large town and covers an area of about lkm2. The mine was worked at depths ranging from 5 to 100 meters but mining operations actually ceased some 50 years ago. There are seven coal seams, each one to two meters thick, overlain by sedimentary rocks in a strongly faulted area. Different kinds of subsidence have occurred, crown holes, shallow depressions and hummocky ground. The results of rock mechanical characterisation (RMR method) in the area have been used to define three different types of numerical model (FLAC 2D). A large numbers of simulations has been performed to solve three different problems at three different scales: to determine the, mechanical properties of the roof rock and overburden involved in the subsidence process, to assess the crown hole subsidence potential and to define the properties of the beam foundations.

"Quantitatively identifying the load on a steel king beam set is a complicated issue in designing the king beam structure at the slope bottom area. From an engineering perspective, understanding the nature and support mechanism of the king beam structure as a standing support is critical in identifying the calculation input parameters for the structure design software. Based on design practices in recent years and successful applications in several slope bottom intersections, the authors present a king beam design methodology, including qualitative analysis, quantitative calculation with a structural design software, and computer Finite Element Analysis (FEA) verification.Especially important is the concept of interaction and the confinement effect between the king beam structure and surrounding rocks, which is essential in designing a proper steel structure in terms of maintaining the roof stability, as well as saving the steel materials and costs of manufacture, labor, and delivery. This paper details the design methodology and applications in several underground slope bottom intersection designs, reaching the goals of improving roof stability and reducing costs.INTRODUCTION AND DESIGN METHODOLOGYCurrently, the load on a square or arch set is typically determined by either past empirical design experiences or known heights of roof falls in current or adjacent mines. These methods work but sometimes are too conservative from an engineering perspective. For example, when designing a king beam structure for an intersection, these methods may lead to a design with extremely large and heavy steel beams, which are not convenient for delivery and installation on-site, not to mention, costly. Therefore, accurately identifying the potential maximum load on the king beam structure is important for designing a safet, effective, and cost-efficient steel structure. In order to determine the overburden failure characteristics of extra-thick seam mining, EH4 electromagnetic image system and borehole televiewer survey were applied to panel 8100, Tongxin coal mine. EH4 electromagnetic imaging system was used to map the overburden strata before and after mining. Analysis of the distribution of the electrical conductivity showed that the fractured zone height was 492-558 ft (150-170m); Observation through the borehole televiewer showed that the fractured zone height of water conductivity (or water flowing fractured zone height) was 110m-142m. The results of the two methods showed that the fractured zone height of water conductivity was 492-558 ft (150- 170m) or 10-11.3 times the mining height.

The compressive strength of coal in Yanlong mine area of China is less than 3 MPa. Basically, it is powdery. The roof and floor rocks are mudstone. Therefore this coal seam is a typical ?three soft? coal seam. Roof bolting cannot be used due to the very soft strata. When the conventional U-steel support was used, roadways deformation exceeded 30% of its original dimensions in some sections one half month after development. The required repair work was huge, seriously affecting the daily mine production. This paper describes how to support the soft coal roadways. The deformation characteristics of soft coal roadway were investigated. The conventional U-steel support is not subjected to uniform load, so the whole supporting structure must be strengthened. In addition, drilling holes in the coal seam can transfer high stress from near the ribs to the deeper parts of the surrounding strata, which is beneficial to the stability of the roadway. This new support method is to combine the strengthened U-steel support with pressure-relieving drill holes, providing an economic and efficient way to support the very soft coal roadways.

A proper understanding of the operation of these high pressure systems is necessary to safely maintain and repair these support systems. A Transversely Elasto-Plastic Model was configured in FLAC (Fact Lagrangian Analysis of Continua) as a more realistic simulation of stratified and inclined strata behaviour examining surface subsidence above the inclined longwall panels (I ). The failure criterion employed was a modified Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion that assumed a variable cohesion, which changed with respect to the orientation of the plane of anisotropy . Using the proposed numerical modelling technique several longwall panels with different configurations were simulated. The results of both surface subsidence and horizontal displacements were validated against UK data using the Subsidence Engineer's Handbook (S.E.H) subsidence prediction method and the Influence Function Method (2). It was found from the research that the incite properties as well as laboratory to field reduction factors arc depth dependent. A set of relationships for calculation of anicotropic stiffness and strength parameters have been derived. The proposed modelling approach has been successfully applied to surface subsidence prediction for 3 collieries in the UK allowing the results of the simulation to he validated directly against measured data.

Tunnel stability has an important role in the production process of an underground coal mine. There are various methods for analysing tunnel stability, such as numerical methods and analytical methods. In this paper, numerical methods (Phase2 software) have been used to determine tunnel wall displacement in a mining tunnel of the Parvade underground coal mine. The Ground Reaction Curve has also been drawn using analytical methods to determine tunnel wall displacement. The comparison of results from the numerical method and the analytical method show a noteworthy difference in the tunnel wall displacement. The displacement calculated by the numerical method shows a lower value than that of the analytical method because the numerical method is more suited to modeling the various coal and rock layers, as well as the shape of the excavations found in coal mines. The methodology used in this paper together with the results obtained from both methods can serve as useful tools for the coal mine design engineer when determining the ground support requirements.

Roof conditions at Southern Colliery, the second Iongwall mine to be established at German Creek, were found to be much stronger and more massive than at the earlier longwall mine on the lease. Investigations were made to ascertain the level of face support required for longwall extraction under the changed geological conditions. Geotechnical information was provided from drillholes and highwall exposures. Downhole geophysical logs, notably the sonic velocity log, were used to obtain a distribution of the major lithological units over the mine area. A representative type section of the strata and geomechanical properties was compiled to form the basis for numerical modelling. Two-dimensional finite element methods were used to predict strata movements and chock loads under cantilevered roof conditions. The model incorporated a 6.3 m thick roof beam either bonded or detached, with either a 2 m or 5 m overhang. The solid rib, immediate roof, chock support and goaf were modelled as distinct parts, in addition a front abutment stress profile, derived from three-dimensional displacement-discontinuity analysis, was superimposed on the model.

"Unexpected movement of ground can potentially endanger lives, damage equipment or destroy property. Occupational accidents frequently occur with fatal consequences in developing countries with significant economic dependence on industries such as mining. Therefore, there is increasing need for miners' protection against such hazards. Slope stability and roof support accidents are two of the major causes of fatalities at surface and underground mining operations. According to national codes, employers are obligated to protect workers against accidents; however, these rules fall short of the standards in developed countries. National safety regulations should clearly specify support systems. The International Labor Organization (ILO) prepared two codes of practice, aiming to guide those responsible for improving standards of safety and to provide guidelines for drafting of safety regulations for the coal mine industry and quarry open cast mines. The practical recommendations of these codes in the ground control area have been analysed and the advantages and disadvantages of ILO codes concerning ground control are summarized.INTRODUCTIONTwo million people die every year from work-related accidents and diseases. An estimated 160 million people suffer from work-related diseases, and there are an estimated 270 million fatal and non-fatal work-related accidents per year. In economic terms, the ILO has estimated that 4% of the world's annual GDP is lost as a consequence of occupational diseases and accidents (ILO, 2009).Mining has always been dangerous due to many potential risks such as those associated with using machinery in enclosed spaces, rock falls, blasting operations and explosion of flammable gases, which endanger miners' safety and health. However, it is suggested that implementing new laws along with strict adherence would reduce such risks in the workplace.The severity and frequency of accidents are trending downward in developed countries, where the focus is on large private companies who invest heavily in mechanization and developing economies of scale. But in many parts of the world, particularly in developing countries, minerals are extracted by people working with simple tools and equipment; they work on a smaller scale, are more flexible, and can exploit irregular ore bodies and steep, dipping seams."

An example application is presented in which Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) was utilized to monitor roof strata movements during pillar extraction in a potash mine. The study was initiated when Western Ag-Minerals decided to implement secondary mining of pillars in order to extend the life of their Nash Draw Mine. A prototype operation was conducted in one mine panel to assess mining equipment and procedures, and to determine if ground control problems would develop. An instrumentation array was installed by personnel from New Mexico Tech and Western Ag to monitor strata movements, changes in pillar stress and surface subsidence, and these data are being analyzed by the Bureau of Mines. This paper is limited to a discussion of roof-floor convergence and roof strata movement to illustrate the application of TDR to ground control. Plots are presented which demonstrate the capability of distinguishing location, magnitude and mode of rock movement using TDR to interrogate coaxial cables grouted into holes drilled in the roof.

The German coal industry operates a multi-seam extraction system, with average working depths currently around 1,000 meters. The gate roads serving the longwalls are often used for a second time - a practice which has the advantage of allowing several panels to be extracted with a minimum of roadway drivage work. This preference for re-using gate roads is based on a number of factors: such an arrangement a) prevents the strata pressures in the subsequent panels from being adversely affected by the presence of support pillars, b) helps achieve the target of full mineral extraction and c) allows the roadways to be used for air conditioning and ventilation purposes as part of an advancing longwall system. This paper explains the planning procedure required for a rectangular rockbolted roadway, using as an example a gate road in the 3 meter-thick D2/C seam at Lippe colliery, and describes the subsequent operating experience. Here special attention is focused on modem procedures and techniques for mine roadway planning. The investigation also examines the part played by the mine ventilation system and the available machine technology, which are particularly important parameters for the design of the T-junction areas and support system. "The Broadmeadow punch longwall coal mine in Central Queensland Australia has experienced significant highwall movement associated with the effect of longwall subsidence when the longwalls approach their final position close to the open-cut highwall. In response to this movement, Broadmeadow employed two types of broadscale highwall monitoring (radar and laser scanners) to provide full coverage measurement throughout three consecutive longwalls approaching the highwall. This was to attain a better understanding of the mechanism causing the movement and potentially enable prediction of instability. Results from the monitoring found the highwall is displaced to magnitudes unlike those typically measured in open-cut mining and in direct contrast with typical longwall subsidence behaviour.This paper discusses the ground movements measured, monitoring methods used, safety measures established, as well as theorising the failure mechanism. Recommendations are made for mine and pit designs for future punch longwall layouts. The paper shows how the movements measured are more aligned to some measurements made during stream valley closure studies previously presented at the ICGCM and challenge the mechanisms suggested by previous literature.BACKGROUNDThe mining of longwalls under or adjacent to large voids (e.g., stream valleys, escarpments, or cliffs) is commonly associated with heavily vegetated or steep surface areas. In areas of extreme topographic variance, access to traditional survey pegs and stations or even new radar or laser technologies is limited. In addition, seldom have the longwall layouts aligned themselves parallel or perpendicular to the surface feature, making interpretation of any available surface movement data more complicated.The punch longwall layout (Figure 1) is also quite uncommon (only undertaken at a small number of longwall mines in Australia) but creates the perfect configuration to enable a somewhat controlled study of the effect of longwall subsidence on a steeply dipping surface feature (an un-vegetated, evenly excavated open-cut highwall). The relatively recently developed radar and laser scanning technology has also enabled near continuous, real-time, sub-millimetre monitoring of a full 500m wide x 100m high highwall. Because the punch longwall enables access and a clear view, the technology could be easily deployed as compared to the highly vegetated and variable topography of stream valleys."

Microseismic emissions are generated by deformation and cracking of rock around an opening inside a mine. The rock tends to achieve equilibrium in a new geometry under changing stress conditions was found to provide useful clues to the impending roof falls and ground instability. The typical characteristics of these microseismic event patterns is shown to be of diagnostic value in sensing in advance rook fall that invariably follow such events. In most of the longwall faces, the main problem faced was due to strata behavior in the presence of massive sandstone bed, which is generally difficult to cave. Microseismic monitoring system was used to monitor strata behavior during longwall mining operation at Rajendra underground coal mine of South Eastern Coal Fields limited (SECL). More than 44,000 microseismic events with local magnitude between -3.4 and 0.5 were recorded during the monitoring period from September, 2001 to March 2003. Analysis of these events was correlated with respect to roof falls. The time series of range of source parameters such as Radiated energy, seismic moment, Energy Index, Seismic Schmidt number, time of occurrence and location of fractures before and during roof fall exhibit qualitatively distinct patterns about six hours before roof falls. &ong the several seismic parameters investigated the microseismic event rate as precursor was found to be most significant indicator of an impending roof fall. The results are discussed as case study in this paper.

Few studies have specifically measured and documented the large-scale loading behavior and durability of ventilation stoppings to mining induced movements, particularly from longwalls. Ventilation stoppings are more commonly the concern of ventilation engineers, and ventilation, topping response to ground movement has only been documented in an incidental manner. This paper presents the investigations of underground measurements that have been conducted to determine the loading response of stoppings constructed from lightweight aggregate concrete masonry units (CMU). These investigations have produced some interesting results that may prove beneficial, not only for developing and assessing alternative stopping construction techniques, but also for designing and selecting standard construction methods for use in varying mining conditions. For instance, the interface friction that results from wedging a CMU stopping during construction plays a substantial role in its ability to resist both lateral and vertical loads. Although they are not intended for ground support, the study showed that block stoppings can resist vertical loads of at least 2,700 to 3,000 kN. Asymmetric loading of a stopping may result in localized failure of blocks within a stopping, which, depending on the severity, can be a precursor of impending stopping failure. In addition to measurement results and implications, the paper will also present details of field measurement methods used to assess stopping response. Roof bolting in the Pittsburgh Coalbed takes many forms today: coupled partially grouted bolts, fully grouted rebar, passive cable bolts, tensioned cable bolts, and torque tension rebar. The Federal No. 2 Mine of Peabody Energy has recently made a significant advance in longwall headgate primary roof support, with the change fiom an 8 ft long coupled partially grouted bolt to a 6 ft long torque tension system. The coupled partially grouted bolt consists of a 4 ft long 0.804 in diameter rolled deformation bar thread coupled to a smooth 718 in headed bar. The coupled partially grouted bolt is anchored into a 1 318 in borehole with 4 ft of high speed resin. The 718 in diameter smooth bar is tensioned by rotation into the treaded coupler, upon setting of the resin, compressing the immediate roof. The change was initially driven by occasional failure of the coupled partially grouted bolt at the threaded coupler, due to lateral movement caused by horizontal stress. A fully grouted % in diameter torque tension bolt, in a 1 in borehole, was proposed as a cost effective primary bolting for the high horizontal stress conditions. The upper 2 112 ft of the rebar is anchored in fast set, medium viscosity resin and the bottom 3 K ft is anchored in slow set, special low insertion force resin. The lower end of the rebar is threaded with a nut that permits the counter clockwise spinning of the bolt to mix the resin, at maximum rotational torque. Upon setting of the high speed top resin, the nut is spun clockwise to tighten the nut against a metal dome plate. The plate is forced against the roof to compress the immediate roof, A complete headgate entry has been successfully supported with the torque tension system. The mining of the adjacent longwall panel was completed in September 2004. The torque tension system provided a 25% savings over the previously employed coupled partially grouted bolt system.

[A standardized checklist in a questionnaire format, was established to investigate selected factors associated with coal nips roof falls, as derived from an intensive review of the literature. A plot study was undertaken to aspect and explore possible statistical relationships that may exist with these parameters. the Purposes of toe study were to: 1. Study in a systematic and empirical fashion selected parameters that may be capable of differentiating characteristics of roof falls; 2. Obtain some predictive indices cased on selected physical and management related variables so that predictions of future problems associated with mine roof falls can be completed, prior to its actual occurrence. Accomplishment of these goals should result in valuable guides to the mining engineer in scheduling exploration work and 4 determining economic feasibility of certain ground control and .lining pro and practices. Stowing or waste fill is common in the German mining industry since the beginning of mining activities, With increasing mechanization, flat and gently inclined seams (0 -- 18) were mined. These mines were located within the densely populated areas close to important infrastructures such as industrial complexes, roads, highways, railroads, rivers and canals. These buildings and infra¬structures were rarely protected against subsidence influences and other ground movements and dump capacities close to the mines were exhausted. For subsidence reasons and because of the low dump capacities pneumatic stowing methods were continuously developed and used in German longwalls until 1997. Due to techni¬cal standards and because of some restrictions pneumatic stowing in Germany is only used at a minimum seam thickness of 2.00 m and average costs of this method are $20 - 30 per ton. A significant reduction of the disturbance potential and by that a decrease in expenses for subsidence regulations due to reduced subsidence and ground movements could not be achieved. In this paper the experiences with pneumatic stowing in the Ger¬man mining industry are described. Possible subsidence reduction and economic aspects of pneumatic stowing are taken into account.

In surface electrical exploration the high resolution earth resistivity method (HRRM) is a very effective method for detecting abandoned drift mines workings. When the abandoned mines are more than 500 ft (150 m) deep, its detection capability reduces greatly and requires more effort to implement. In Yan Quan coal mine, Shanxi province, we tried to adapt this method for underground application. Two survey lines were designed with the spacing of current and potential poles 20 m and 10 m, respectively and measuring points at 2m. The measurement radius of I line and I1 line were 140 m and 60 m, respectively, and the infinitely far pole was 1200~2000 m from the survey line. (Note the I and II lines are located on the north and south ribs of main tunnel, respectively). The survey results showed that abandoned workings were located at 25-70m, Survey Line I and at 80-1 10m, Survey line 11. Based on this finding, the longwall panel gateroads and set up entry were properly located thereby providing safe mining of the No. 15 Coal seam. Abrupt tailgate roadway ground failures, described as floor bumps, sometimes occur in the tailgate entry outby the face during the high-speed extraction of coal from mechanized longwall panels. These floor bumps typically damage the tailgate entry support structures for a distance of from 12.2 to 24.4 m (40 to 80 ft) outby the face. The relative closure of the tailgate entry may be a key indicator of potential tailgate ground control problems. Regression analyses of tailgate entry convergence data conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) indicate that entry closure may be characterized as an exponential function of the distance outby the longwall face. Assuming that the entry closure is caused by the abutment loads created by the excavation of the longwall panel, the resulting convergence equation can be integrated to locate the centroid of abutment loading. This information can be used to document zones of potential ground failure ahead of the operating face.

A chance detection of a seismic event of unexplained origin in the mining district of Appin in New South Wales. Australia, led to a detailed investigation of recording and analyzing seismic events occurring in the area. Multiple events were recorded each day on the seismometer stations. The larger events were strong enough to be recorded on a number of stations spread out in the district. Background investigation of seismicity stimulated due to engineering activities revealed that similar cases of mining triggered seismicity have been reported previously from many mining districts around the world. If the tectonic stresses are close to failure in a region then a small perturbation of the stress state may lead to instability in the region which may manifest itself as seismicity. The parameters that control the occurrence of such siesmicity include tectonic stress magnitudes and orientations. geological weaknesses or structural features and the amount of stress contribution due to mining. This paper reports on the seismic investigative study conducted in the Appin area and considers its association with the geological layout of the region and the mining activity.
