The evolution of longwall mining is briefly traced from its inception in England in the 1620's. In the beginning this method recovered 90% of coal with roof closure controlled by packs and walls. Mechanization began with kerf cutting, crude face conveyors, and improved face support. Full face mining was accompanied by the introduction of self- advancing hydraulic supports. U. S. longwalls evolved a retreating system to recover blocks of coal outlined by room and pillar panels. Computer control combined with the most modern technology have greatly increased productivity. Past trends are used to predict future technological directions.

Since 1993 Cyprus Amax has brought $2.5 billion dollars of greenfield and expansion projects into production, taking it from a mid-sized domestic minerals company into a major international minerals organization. The near simultaneous development of these multiple mineral projects in different locations around the world provided the opportunity for Cyprus Amax to develop a formal project management approach based, in large part, on an outsourcing philosophy. This formal project management system along with its outsourcing philosophy has served the growth agenda of Cyprus Amax extremely well. These preceding factors, coupled with the in-house retention of a core project group that fully understands the breadth of skills and abilities needed to undertake development of multiple large projects successfully, have been the cornerstone of Cyprus Amax’s project development success.

A new analytical approach for characterizing and improving the performance of ball milling is presented. Individual ball mill circuit design and operating variables can be related to overall circuit performance through two distinct parameters for classification and breakage. The ball mill circuit functional performance equation is presented. Applications in the industrial plant and in the research field are discussed.

INTRODUCTION Before a mine is planned in detail, a preliminary analysis is often conducted. This preplanning permits the mining engineer to make a rapid assessment as to whether or not a particular mining property warrants further consideration. In fact, a properly conducted preplanning phase can come within 10% to 20% of the actual results, thereby saving the mining engineer valuable time before committing himself to a fine-tuned analysis. The questions to be answered by mine preplanning are (1) What will be the operating conditions for the mine? and (2) How long will it take to complete the project? To answer these questions, calculations dealing with reserve estimation, production planning, man- power planning, and project scheduling are conducted. The following sections discuss these various phases of mine preplanning in greater detail. RESERVE ESTIMATION The estimation of the various characteristics of a reserve, such as quantity, grade, and thickness, is an ongoing process throughout the life of a mining venture. However, the reserve-estimation phase of mine planning is more closely associated with the preplanning phase. There are many different techniques employed in reserve estimation of solid mineral deposits; variations among them are introduced because of such considerations as ease of application or level of accuracy. In any event, each technique is developed in the following manner: (1) the mineral body is represented pictorially and then subdivided into blocks related to one or more samples of exploration data, (2) the area and volume of each block is determined, (3) the volumes are converted to representative tonnages (or, for example, grades), and (4) the results are tabulated. To illustrate this procedure, the polygonal (area-of- influence) technique will be presented due to its ease of application, flexibility in dealing with different deposits, and general acceptance. The polygonal method assumes that all characteristics of a mineral body extend halfway between a point of observation and any other point of observation. The explored portion of the mineral body is represented by polygonal prisms whose depths relate to the characteristic in question (grade, thickness, etc.) and whose plane bases relate to the area of influence of each point of observation (drill hole, etc.) as shown in Fig. 1. The polygons must be constructed in a definite order, usually clockwise and from the periphery to the center of the deposit. Table 1 can then be used to calculate the characteristics in question. Since, by definition, the polygonal method assumes that the characteristics of a mineral body extend half- way between points of observation, it becomes readily apparent that the evaluation of a vertical-drill hole exploration program requires that the sides of the polygons be formed by the intersection of perpendicular bisectors (Fig. 2). Figs. 3 and 4 show correct and incorrect construction of the polygons. The criterion for correct construction of the polygons is that all points within a particular polygon must be closer to its rallying point than those located in any other polygon. This is clearly not the case for certain points that are located in the polygon containing rallying point B in Fig. 4. Although this method can be used where the drill holes are irregularly spaced, calculations become less tedious when a square net (Fig. 5) or a chessboard (Fig. 6) grid is adopted. The numbers shown in Figs. 5 and 6 represent the relative weight for each of the shaded areas. In general, the greater the number of polygons, the more continuous the mineral body, and the more regular the grid, then the more accurate the computations will be. PRODUCTION PLANNING Before an acceptable evaluation of the production potential of a mine can be determined, a thorough exploration program should be conducted. It seems obvious that the nature and properties of the deposit and adjacent strata, the presence of impurities, and other mining conditions should be adequately determined prior to production planning and equipment selection. The lack of sufficiently detailed knowledge of the many mining parameters has led to the failure of numerous operations. For example, targeted production tonnages and equipment sizes for a coal mine are intimately related to the seam thickness. Needless to say the quality of information that is gathered from an exploration program can have a tremendous impact on the production plan. Upon completion of the 6,200 m (20,340 lineal ft; lft) North Tunnel drive for the Portland East Side Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Tunnel project in Portland, OR, the slurry tunnel boring machine (TBM) had to be returned from the Port Center shaft at Swan Island to the Opera shaft at the main mining site for the 2,700 m (8,860 lft) South Tunnel drive. At the Port Center shaft, the main 513-t (565-st) TBM and TBM tailshield were hoisted out of the shaft in two pieces using four 200-t (220-st) strand jacks mounted on a 635-t (700-st) hydraulic boom gantry system supported by Emmert International?s custom gantry tracks designed to span the shaft. After lifting the TBM components out of the shaft, the gantry system loaded the TBM components onto two Goldhofer platform trailers, which then transported the TBM and tailshield to a barge using a roll-on/roll-off method.

Asarco Incorporated’s Omaha, Nebraska refinery site and the City of Omaha’s downtown redevelopment projects are the perfect example of the marriage of the Brownfield and Sustainable Development strategies. Nebraska’s largest voluntary site remediation project created a focus point for redevelopment and has spurred over $1 billion in economic investment within a 1-mile radius of the site. Asarco was faced with options of very expensive and uncertain facility upgrades or a shutdown. Local leaders, Asarco, and regulators worked together to convert a controversial and complex site to a park-like redevelopment area with numerous long-term benefits to the City and the environment.

The Burnaby Mountain Tunnel was an integral part of the Trans Mountain Expansion Project. General Contractor, Kiewit Ledcor TMEP Partnership (KLTP), contracted with McNally Construction to build an underground tunnel between the Burnaby and Westridge Marine terminals under Burnaby Mountain. The pipeline was constructed within a 2.6-kilometre tunnel, eliminating the need to run the pipeline over the mountain and minimizing community impacts. The complexities of this Project led to multiple innovations, including the design of a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) capable of excavating through mixed-faced conditions concurrently thus allowing the Project team to complete the tunnel with limited geotechnical information.

It has' been found that lithological conditions over the Pittsburgh Coal bed cause the subsidence coefficient to vary within the area of the subsidence trough. This precludes the use of European developed predictive models, which are based upon a constant subsidence coefficient. Regression analysis of the distribution of subsidence coefficients from 11 Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, longwall panel studies on the location relative to the edge of the panel has yielded a third degree polynomial equation. This equation has been incorporated into a BASIC computer program for use on a personal computer that allows users with no previous knowledge of the theory of subsidence to predict vertical movements over typical longwall panels in the Northern Appa1achian Coal Basin.

The Wyoming bentonite industry continued its run of stable, if not strong, growth in its complex markets. Growth at the macroscale was fueled by a strong domestic economy, the weakening of the U.S. dollar in the global market and strong worldwide global demand. Challenges to the benchmark of the industry were rapid and saw ongoing increases in raw material costs(pallets, bags and additives), higher energy costs and higher overall transportation costs for all modes of movement. Exports continued to be assisted by dollar depreciation (5 percent to 10 percent) from January 2004to January 2005. This depreciation followed the significant weakening of 2003. And it was most favorable during the pullback in fuel and shipping rates in the second half of the year.

Through the USGS National Coal Availability pro-gram, two San Juan Basin studies have been completed. The study areas are in the northwest Bisti field, Fruitland Formation and in the eastern Standing Rock field, Menefee Formation. Original resources are 4.66 Gt and 3.46 Gt (5.14 billion stand 3.82 billion st), respectively, in the Bisti and Standing Rock areas. Bisti coal resources are greatly reduced by the Bisti-De-Na-Zin wilderness area (1.13 Gt (1.25 billion st)). Technological restrictions remove 31% from Standing Rock original resource. Available resources are 60% (2.79 Gt(3.07 billion st)) of the Bisti original resource and66% (2.26 Gt (2.49 billion st)) of the original Standing Rock resource.

Waste phosphatic clay presents a difficult disposal problem and a significant loss of P2O5. Recent developments make this study on the use of phosphatic clay as a feed material for H3PO4 production worthwhile. (a) New data from Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute (FIPR) suggest that the Bclay^ waste can be effectively treated by improved solid separation coupled with flotation to produce feed material for recovering additional phosphate. (b) The use of BOLI Flowsheet^ provides capability to predict performance of aqueous-based processes for a range of possible operating conditions. Using the new FIPR data and BOLI Flowsheet^ enabled the design of a new process that can potentially extend the usefulness of current P2O5 ore deposits. Predictions using OLI Flowsheet were able to identify process conditions that effectively overcome the difficulty of high Mg content of phosphatic clay. Estimated manufacturing cost in the current study lead to valuation of the P2O5 content of the phosphatic clay recovered/utilized at 60 to 70% of that of the phosphate rock feed material currently used. Phosphatic clay should be considered as a valuable material that is currently given zero value. The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration’s annual conference and expo, MINEXCHANGE 2026, will take place Feb. 22–25, 2026, at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, UT. The event will foster a hub for innovation, technical exchange and policy discussion for the global mining industry. Over four days, attendees will take part in short courses, technical sessions, field trips and networking events that highlight the advancement of the mining industry. The conference’s keynote session, titled “Regaining America’s Mineral Dominance,” will start at 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 23 in the Grand Ballroom E–J. The speaker will address the sweeping policy actions now shaping the nation’s mineral future, following a series of executive orders issued by the Trump administration designed to bolster domestic mineral production and energy security. These directives, including Immediate Measures to Increase Domestic Mineral Production (EO 14241) and Establishing the National Energy Dominance Council (EO 14213), have set in motion a coordinated effort across the Departments of Interior, Energy, Defense and Commerce to enhance the United States’ position as a global leader in critical minerals. The invited speakers include Utah Governor Spencer J. Cox and Nate Foster, managing director of Rio Tinto Kennecott, who will examine how policy and industry are converging to meet surging demand for minerals essential to modern technology. Governor Cox is expected to highlight Utah’s long-standing role in American mining, from the early development of Kennecott Copper to its current position as a producer of 40 of the nation’s 50 identified critical minerals. Foster, meanwhile, will offer insights into Rio Tinto’s extensive operations in Utah, including the Kennecott Copper Mine — one of only two operating copper smelters in the United States — and the company’s ongoing efforts to build more resilient, sustainable supply chains. Rio Tinto’s work in critical mineral production, from copper and tellurium in Utah to new operations in Arizona, has made it a fundamental figure in the U.S. mineral economy. Projects such as the Resolution Copper development and the revival of Gunnison Copper using Rio Tinto’s innovative Nuton technology illustrate how private-sector leadership is driving sustainability in domestic mining. These advancements come at a critical moment for the industry, as copper prices remain near historic highs. The keynote session will emphasize that meeting future mineral demand will require a concerted effort between government, industry and technology partners to secure responsible, domestic production. Introduction A resource of more than 122 Gt (134 billion st) of minable trona and mixed trona and halite underlies an area of about 3400 km2 (1300 sq miles) west of Green River, WY (Culbertson, in preparation) (Fig. 1). In 1982, the total domestic consumption of soda ash (refined trona) was 6 Mt (6.7 million st) (Kostick, 1983). About 90% of this came from Wyoming trona. This enormous deposit occurs in the Wilkins Peak Member of the Green River Formation that is of Eocene age. This formation is derived from sediments deposited in a large lake named Gosiute. Lake Gosiute occupied the Green River Basin in southwestern Wyoming some 38 to 54 million years ago. The Wilkins Peak Member represents a restricted, evaporite-rich cycle of deposition when the trona deposits were formed. A total of 42 trona beds are known. Of these, 25 are of sufficient thickness and extent to be considered minable (Culbertson, in preparation). The production of sodium compounds from the trona deposits in the Wilkins Peak Member began in 1896 when wells were drilled within the present boundaries of the town of Green River. The purpose of the drilling was for extraction of sodium carbonate brines. Sodium carbonate (sal soda) was removed from these brines at a plant in Green River. Bedded trona was discovered in 1938 in a core from an oil well drilled south of Westvaco. In 1947, the underground mining of trona began. Production has continued from 1948 to date. Currently, five companies are mining trona and producing soda ash from the Wilkins Peak Member in Wyoming. Additionally, Allied Chemical Co. mines and processes trona for Church and Dwight's sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) operation in Green River. Competition in the soda ash industry depends primarily on the efficiency of mining and refining, allowing for lower-cost production. Newer plants and mine designs should increase efficiency. Solution mining holds promise as an even lower-cost method of mining. Employment in the soda ash industry is declining since the newer mining and refining methods are less labor intensive. Declines in employment, however, may be offset as production increases. Due to the large resource, the availability of minable trona should not be a problem for perhaps hundreds of years. This paper reviews the results of the subsidence research prop ram at Sandia National Laboratories. The manuscript highlights the following: the application of empirical methods (profile functions) to the subsidence above longwall panels in the U.S.; the use of the "rubble model" to describe the behavior of broken strata as it distends when it falls to the Mine floor (or top of the rubble pile) and then is subsequently compacted as it is loaded by overlying elements of strata; and, the application of physical modeling techniques (centrifuge simulations) and numerical techniques to study the failure mechanisms in highly structured stratigraphy. The capabilities of the latter two are illustrated ')y comparing their predictions to the results of a field case that has complicated stratigraphy.

Modern shield TBMs allow tunnel drives through almost any type of ground. Thanks to high elaborated technical measures, significant subsidence of the ground surface can be almost entirely avoided. The tunnel lining behind the TBM must be capable of withstanding all loads without deforming, especially during ring erection and advance. Single-shell tunnel linings behind the TBM, usually reinforced concrete segmental rings, can be designed to fulfill this demand. With many projects, however, damage occurs to the lining. Repair costs may be extremely high. Reasons for damages and possibilities to avoid them are shown and explained.

The prediction and control of ground deformations due to underground mining are important considerations in the permitting, planning, and monitoring of coal mining operations. The prediction of mining-induced ground movements using the influence function method is a mature technology and is widely used in many coal basins around the world. Such movements mainly include subsidence, horizontal displacement, and horizontal and/or ground strain. Predictions can be accomplished using regional subsidence parameters and site-specific data.

This paper presents preliminary test results obtained with a 0.38 kg/s (3000 lb-hr) beta prototype MagMill™. In processing Upper Freeport coal the beta prototype recovered 82% of the weight of the feed and 91% of the heat content while reducing the potential emissions of sulfur, kgSO2/GJ(lbSO2/MBtu), by 61%. Pyritic sulfur in the MagMill™ product was reduced by 78% compared to that in the feed. For all runs, the mill product was controlled between 70 to 80% finer than 74 µ particle size. Recoveries of mercury, arsenic, and selenium ranged from 35 to 45% of that in the feed. Power draw was reduced by 26% and mill throughput was increased by 9% compared to the pulverizer operating with no magnetic separator attached.

Amid some of the worst economic conditions that the mining industry has been faced with in more than a decade, the mood among the large crowd at the 114th Annual Northwest Mining Association?s annual meeting was surprisingly upbeat. More than 2,200 attendees showed up at John Asuaga?s Golden Nugget Casino in Reno, NV for the conference held Dec. 1-5. And more than 200 companies exhibited in 240 spaces, including SME and the Minerals Information Institute. The number of attendees and exhibitors were the most for the conference in more than 10 years. The conference was held in Reno/Sparks for just the second time in its illustrious history but began under the cloud of global financial turmoil. Prior to, and during the conference, the industry news headlines were grim, to say the least. An alarming number of mine plans and expansions had been put on hold; hundreds of miners across the United States had been or were in the process of being laid off; commodity prices were falling and some of the biggest mergers in the industry fell through while miners around the world put the brakes on to take a wait-and-see approach. It was a painful time for many, but the downsizing actions taken by many mining companies was exactly what needed to happen, according to Industry Outlook Luncheon featured speaker Frederick Sturm. He is the executive vice president and chief investment strategist and member of Mackenzie?s Investment team. He has earned a reputation as one of Canada?s leading investors in natural-based companies and he also manages the Ivy Global Natural Resource Fund in the United States Sturm said that the mining industry has fallen hard and that he expects it to bounce back quickly, before falling hard again. In these tough times, he said, the companies that have pulled back on production early are doing the right thing in the long run.
