An AIME transaction by P.L. Allsman (1960), "Analysis of Explosive Action in Breaking Rock," contains many useful concepts applicable to blast design. Of special interest was the derivation of a heave blasting burden formula, which is important in establishing the maximum burden. Unfortunately, its derivation contains a fundamental error and then a compensating one. This formula was: [ ] The derivation used the impulse-momentum principle, with a 0.3 m thick (1 ft thick) radius of rock mass being acted on by an explosive impulse. However, the rock weight was not converted to mass by dividing by the gravitational constant. This mistake can be verified by checking the units in the formula, which resolve into m%-sec instead of meters. Adding the gravitational constant corrects this: [ ] If the minimum velocity is now taken as 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec), as was recommended, excessively large burdens result. Any appropriate rock velocity should be capable of throwing the rock mass a minimum distance so that the swell needed for breakage can occur. Unless the burden is extremely small and the bench height is very high, it is unlikely that a velocity of only 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec) will be sufficient. A review of the literature indicates that average rock velocities observed by camera studies typically range from 15 to 30 m/sec (50 to 100 ft per sec) (duPont deNemours and Co., 1977; Tansey, 1979). On this basis, a minimum rock velocity of about 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) would be expected and not 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). When a velocity of 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) is inserted into the corrected formula, the results approximate those of the original formula with a velocity of 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). Innovative mining and metallurgical operating techniques or processes can be identified and developed by systematically analyzing change as it occurs within the mine, plant, technology, or industry. Sources of change to be monitored for innovative opportunities include unexpected successes or failures, incongruities between perceived and actual events, process needs, changes in perceptions, and the development of new knowledge. Innovation can be effectively organized, practiced, and managed. The perception of change as an opportunity rather than a threat is mandatory, as is the systematic measurement of innovative performance. Innovation is enhanced by specifically-designed policies regarding organizational structure and staffing, daily management practices, and compensation and incentives.

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP), commonly known as black lung, is caused by the inhalation of respirable coal mine dust and is a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease with no cure. Historically, CWP has taken a tremendous human and financial toll in the US coal mining industry. Recent health surveillance data indicates that CWP continues to occur at elevated levels. Respirable coal dust exposure must be controlled to prevent the development of CWP. The Pittsburgh Mining Research Division of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts laboratory and mine-site research to identify control technologies that can be used to successfully reduce respirable dust levels. Various technologies, using multiple methods of control, can be applied in order to reduce dust levels. An overview ofCWP’s impact and a general methodology for controlling respirable dust in underground coal mines are discussed in this paper.

Coal production and coal use for electric power generation are diminishing worldwide. Germany will phase out lignite mining as well as lignite and hard coal-powered electricity generation by 2038. In the United States, coal production has dropped by more than 50% since 2006, including in key coal production states like West Virginia and Wyoming (EIA 2021). Closing mines and power plants across entire mining regions has significant socio-economic impacts. Existing industries must be focused on the post-mining economy by attracting new industries, and implementing job retraining programs for displaced workers, as former mining regions transition towards agricultural, industrial and recreational use. This paper examines the German “exit from coal” under the 17 UN Sustainability Goals and illustrates the complex procedures, interrelationships, risks, and rewards of the transition towards renewable energy sources, including wind, solar, hydrogen, and bioresources.

"As human beings, we have managed risk since the dawn of the ages and have been adept at doing so. In order to survive, we hunted or gathered. If we did not take enough risk, we died. If we took much risk, we died (Fig. 1). As individuals and tribes, risk had to be optimized to maximize our chances to thrive, as individuals and as tribes.In today’s world, the risks are vastly different, but in order to thrive, these must be managed. And no industry knows this as much as mining. In fact, the International Council of Mining & Metals (ICMM) has proposed the Critical Risk Model (Fig. 2) as a means of identifying critical risk, critical controls and associated performance standards. The ICMM focuses on sustainable development performance in the mining and metals industry. It has 23 members, representing some of the largest mining companies in the world.This approach is going to help the mining industry. But it must be applied effectively, with the acknowledgment that the system alone cannot be effective. We can say this confidently, as even companies known for the strength of their risk and safety management systems continue to experience significant incidents, and, in some cases, catastrophes. Why does that happen when all safety metrics, including injury rate, are pointing in the right direction? In the view of the author, it is only when leadership, culture and systems work in complete harmony that the resilience of an organization to manage its significant risk is at an optimal level. It remains an ongoing leadership challenge to maintain that balance and the optimal mindset in the organization. So how do you maintain that special balance?Let’s start with a basic premise. Leadership, supported by simple effective systems, creates culture which creates outcomes. Everyone going home safely is an outcome, as is cost effective operations, and to achieve those outcomes efficiently, the organization must focus on the inputs. And those inputs include effective leadership, effective systems (for the purposes of this article, risk and health, safety and environment (HSE) systems), good planning, stable operations and competent workers. This article will focus on gaining maximum performance from your risk management system."

Stillwater Mining Company is developing a second underground palladium and platinum mine approximately 21 km (13 miles) west of their existing Nye operation in south central Montana. A 5650 meter (18,550-foot) tunnel is required to gain access to the ore bearing horizon (J-M Reef). Access and primary mine development can be accelerated through the use of two 4.6 meter (15-foot) diameter tunnel boring machines (TBM). One TBM was purchased new while the other was purchased used. Machine specifications, site support facilities, portal/launch chamber construction, TBM assembly, startup and operation are discussed in this paper.

Introduction The most commonly used ground control design in coal mining is the determination of pillar size by various pillar strength formulae for mine layout (Bieniawski, 1983; Holland, 1973; Hustrulid, 1976; Obert and Duvall 1967; Wilson and Ashwin, 1972). However, there have been few documented case histories concerning the validity of those strength formulae. Recently there are indications that those strength formulae tend to overdesign considerably. From a safety point of view, there is nothing wrong with overdesign. But an overdesign with large chain pillars reduces the flexibility of machine movement and decreases production. It also reduces coal recovery and, thus, shortens the reserve's life. This is especially true for small operators who own a limited reserve. Those small mines, through past practices or out of necessity, experiment with smaller pillars than those predicted by the strength formulae. Conclusive ev¬idence has been collected that points to the need of a new concept of coal pillar design. Two case studies will be cited to illustrate this point. 3-D US pillar strength formulae Figure 1 shows a sectional layout of a one-unit mine. The seam was about 1.3 m (50 in.) thick with a uniform cover of 64 m (210 ft). A house was located near the center of the section. The homeowner demanded that no surface subsidence and domestic well dewatering should ever be allowed as a result of underground room-and-pillar mining. Physical properties - strength and Young's modulus - of the rock strata including coal were obtained by testing small samples in the laboratory. The uniaxial compressive strength of the coal was 3660 kPa (823 psi). Using various pillar strength formulae, the homeowner recommended that square chain pillars be at least 11 m (35 ft) wide. The coal company, however, desired to pursue optimum coal recovery in the safest and most economical manner. They engaged in three-dimensional finite element analysis of the section taking into account the complete stratigraphic sequence of the overburden. Results indicated that the section can be developed by 5.5 m (18 ft) wide entries at 21 m (70 ft) center-to-center. In retreat, the pillars can be splitted along both centerlines leaving a stump pillar of 5.5 m (18 ft) square at each of the four corners. The long-awaited COSMAR study prepared under the auspices of the National Academy of Science reaches one emphatic conclusion that has been enthusiastically seconded by the mining industry: The 1977 federal surface mining act is "poorly suited" as a vehicle to regulate noncoal mining. Though the industry greeted the report with approval, the weight it will carry and the extent of its impact are yet to be felt. The COSMAR report makes no recommendations-that's a job left to the Administration's Council on Environmental Quality-and the prospect of legislation still hovers. For a closer look at the study, MINING ENGINEERING talked to COSMAR committee chairman James Boyd, a well-known presence in the mining arena for over 50 years. After highlighting some of the study's major points, Dr. Boyd comments on the report's impact and possible repercussions. Dr. Boyd, for those readers who haven't seen the COSMAR report, would you summarize some of its major findings? The committee analyzed the surface mining act to determine if it was applicable to noncoal mining and found that there were provisions of the act that either could not be met by existing technology or would be extremely difficult and not necessarily beneficial to adapt. We found that most noncoal mineral mines, despite their obvious diversity, can be considered in two major groups: 93% of all mines move 45% of all materials mined (mostly small units mining construction materials); and the few gigantic regional operations (2%)-copper, iron, phosphate, and uranium mines-that move 50% of the material. With few exceptions, neither of the two groups is amenable to the coal mining practices addressed by the act. The strip mine law was designed for coal mining, where land is regraded, revegetated, and returned to usefulness. In contrast, construction mineral quarries supply local needs for decades, remove most of the material from the immediate vicinity, and cannot be returned to their premining uses (though they have innumerable other valuable uses). The nation's huge mineral deposits require enormous capital investments, are vital to the nation's economy, and can take centuries to exploit. Any attempt to return these locations to premining use would be illogical. Pebble phosphate in Florida and red-bed copper in Oklahoma come near to meeting the conditions contemplated in the act. Saudi Arabia’s mineral potential offers development target that compliment the national effort to diversify the income of this oil and gas economic based nation. Ma’aden, a joint stock company with paid-up capital of US$1 billion, has from its inception in 1997, actively developed in-house engineering and management skills to transform the Arabian shield’s mineral potential into such real projects. Gold mine operating facilities of 100,000 oz/yr underground and 50,000 oz/yr open pit are de-scribed, as well as 3 targets, two of which are underdevelopment; Al Hajar (3,000 tpd at 2.5 gpt Au)and Al Amar (5,000 tpd at 20 gpt Au). Emphasis is also on exploitation of phosphate rock and down-stream fertilizer products, based on the Kingdom’s107,000 sq. km. northern basin geological reserve. Al Jalamid, the prime target, represents 216 million tonnes of these P2O5 reserves. Saudis and expatriates, together, lead international engineering companies and contractors operating and developing these facilities.

The mining industry, like most other industries, has had a difficult couple of years. What are your thoughts on the industry?s direction in the next few years? I am bullish on our industry. There is no question in my mind that the quality of life we enjoy today is largely a result of our past successes in the minerals and mining sector. I am equally certain that the sustainability of that quality of life and the aspirations of the rest of the world to attain that same level of lifestyle will depend hugely on our future successes and will be the driver for our industry to continue to excel and prosper. Surely, there are going to be challenges along the way. These challenges are not only from the public, regulators and various governing bodies, but also from our industry?s own self regulating efforts. However, we have demonstrated throughout the past several decades that we have the capability to meet these challenges head on and come out ahead.

During the 1990’s several copper heap leach facilities treating crushed and agglomerated oxide and sulfide ore were constructed in South America. The majority of these facilities have been in operation for at least three years, during which time the operators have been able to monitor the performance of the heaps. The basis for the paper is a compilation of these operators’ experiences, leading to a discussion of the lessons learned over the past decade. Several key geotechnical issues are examined, focusing upon the integrity of the ore, drainage material and pipe network, along with the success of any inter-lift liners.

The chlorination behaviors of pure iron and manganese oxides were investigated by combining a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) technique with batch-boat roasting followed by leaching. Ferrous and manganeus oxides could be chlorinated readily, but, in the absence of a reductant, the higher oxides of both iron and manganese were difficult to chlorinate. Thermogravimetric analysis curves were drawn to illustrate the complexitites of the reactions, and the possible mechanisms were discussed. Then three manganiferous materials from the Cuyuna Range of Minnesota were treated by a process involving the selective chlorination of manganese followed by leaching. The results were interpreted in the light of the chlorination mechanisms observed on the pure iron and manganese oxides.

I would like to congratulate Professor Gershon on an idea that is obviously valuable and is certainly new to me. It has, however, to be further developed, in that one can get fallacious results by limiting oneself to positional weights. In the example problem, the positional weight of one block was 8.6 (the 8.0 value in the paper was incorrect) for 36 units in the cone, for a mean block value of 0.239. The positional weight of the second block was 4.4 for 15 units, for a mean block value of 0.293. Surely one would expect the second block to be rated higher. Additionally, the time value of money adjustment cannot be determined by depth, because the time that a block is mined is determined by the mining sequence, not depth. Figure 1 shows a slightly altered version of Professor Gershon’s pit. The overall value of the pit is the same, as are the total values under each of his blocks. The values in the right-hand cone have been reversed top to bottom, and the values in the rest of the pit adjusted to keep the central cone total unchanged. All values have been multiplied by 10. Figure 2 shows the sequence of mining, at three blocks per year, for Professor Gershon’s pit, and Fig. 3, the sequence for a pit under the other block. Table 1 shows the value and discounted value (157. ) of Professor Gershon’s pit, and Table 2 shows similar values for the second pit. It is apparent that the second pit schedule is more valuable than the first.

In this work, the crystallization of Carnallite from waste brine of Qaidam Basin in Qinghai province was studied based on NaCl-KCl-MgCl2-H2O phase diagram. According to this study, a new crystallization pathway to recycling waste brine was developed. The carnallite salt was formed by using this technology during the waste brine evaporation. The experiment data shows that 5 tons of waste brine was required to form one ton of the carnallite. The average grade of carnallite prepared by using this procedure was about 19.40% of KCl, 16.92% of NaCl, 28.80% of MgCl2, and 0.82% of CaSO4. This study provides an opportunity to utilization of the waste brine.

Marine phosphorite deposits occur in Brazil, in the Bambui Group of late Precambrian or Early Cambrian age. The phosphorite is laminated, isoclinally folded, and is composed of black, elongated apatite pellets and quartz grains cemented by quartz and muscovite. Abundant, narrow quartz veinlets cut through the rock at right angles to the elongation direction of the pellets. The phosphorite is 0 to 80 meters thick and contains 5 to 30 percent P205. The deposit is elongate towards the northeast, and the central, thickest, and richest part is bounded by faults. Measured reserves are about 250 million tonnes that average about 13 percent P205. Preliminary testing indicates that grinding, scrubbing, and desliming will produce a material usable for fertilizer manufacture at a cost competitive with imported phosphate fertilizers.

Solid-bowl (decanter) centrifuges are used extensively to dewater slurries in a wide range of industries. However, the application of decanters as classification devices is not as common. In this study, the performance of a continuous, pilot-scale, solid-bowl centrifuge was evaluated when classifying an ultrafine coal slurry containing nearly 60% material less than 10µm. The current study examined the effects of operating conditions on centrifuge performance. The test conditions included centrifuge bowl and scroll speeds, volumetric feed rates, solids concentration, and pond depth. Centrifuge performance was evaluated using partition curves, along with product yields and solids concentrations.

The author?s paper at RETC 2007, ?Alternative Contracting Methods? addressed strengths and weaknesses of DBB+DB and introduced Construction Manager/General Contractor (Portland model) and Alliancing (Australian model). Considerable interest in these was expressed by several public agencies at that Conference and at the presentation. The author is assisting the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation (TWRC) with possible implementation of Alliancing. WSDOT is evaluating ways to do this and is considering a delivery methodology, under existing Legislation, based on the CMGC Portland model with incentives and disincentives, moving towards Alliancing. This paper will build on the 2007 paper and update implementation considerations.

Introduction Despite the focus on the so-called "high-tech" and service components of the economy, the minerals industry in 1987 continued to provide the world the overwhelmingly dominant share of the total raw material supply for all manufacturing operations. And, in the form of fertilizers and other soil treatment materials, minerals also supplied indispensable raw materials to ensure continued high production of the agricultural and forestry sectors of the world's economy. Moreover, the role of minerals as a source of construction raw materials was essential to that sector. On the basis of preliminary and partial statistics on world output of crude mineral commodities, 1987 appears to have been a year of further recovery from the recessional years of 1981-1983. The value of world crude mineral industry production (all mineral commodities including fuels) apparently advanced about 5% to nearly $1.1 trillion in terms of constant 1983 dollars.' That is significantly above the recently revised 1986 level of nearly $1.05 trillion, but still considerably below the record-to-date high of $1.27 trillion set in 1980, as shown in Table 1. That growth in value took place despite relatively flat world oil prices - oil being the most important component of the aggregate, as it has been for decades. There is insufficient information available to assess the total value of processed mineral commodities (refined metals, refined oil, manufactured fertilizers and the like). But a figure of $2.6 trillion (constant 1983 dollars) would be a quite conservative estimate for those materials derived only from primary or newly mined materials. And an additional, as-yet-unestimated increment should be added for processed materials derived from secondary raw materials - scrap and other reclaimed substances. From a world trade viewpoint, minerals and mineral products dominate in terms of tonnage. For example, in 1985, on a weight basis, mineral commodities including fuels constituted more than 58% of all goods moving through the Suez Canal and 53% of all goods passing through the Panama Canal. These waterways cannot accommodate giant tankers and ore carriers. So an even larger share of total oceanic trade is composed of minerals and mineral products. Yet, in terms of value, the share of the total accounted for by these industrial essentials is much lower than that accounted for by other commodities, most notably sophisticated high-tech equipment and other goods with a relatively high per-pound value. Worldwide data on the value of mineral export trade for 1987 is so incomplete at this writing that it is impossible to assess that actual level. Indeed, the compilation of similar available data for 1986 covers only the exports of nations with developed market economies. In 1985, these countries accounted for only 67% of total world exports of all goods. They accounted for only 41% of world exports of major mineral commodities: crude nonmetals; metal ores, concentrates, and scrap; mineral fuels; nonferrous metals excluding gold; and iron and steel. For these developed-market-economy countries, the value of exports of these major mineral commodities declined by more than 10% between 1985 and 1986. Lithium-Ion batteries (LIBs) have the potential to go into thermal runaway which introduces a new ignition source in hazardous environments such as gassy underground mines that may contain methane in the surrounding air. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) used an accelerating rate calorimeter (ARC) to induce thermal runaway in individual lithium-titanium-oxide (LTO) and lithium-nickel-cobalt-aluminum-oxide (NCA) LIB cells within a sealed enclosure with either no methane, a lean, a stoichiometric, or a rich methane-air mixture in the surrounding canister to determine if these LIB types would ignite the methane, causing an additive effect on overpressures. Canister pressures and maximum temperatures reached by the cells, surrounding air, and exhausted gases were measured in this study and remained consistent with varying methane concentrations.
