American Indian lands contain a vast amount of renewable and non-renewable resources that have consequently been mined (Smith and Frehner). Therefore, it is understandable that tribes are concerned about environmental impacts from mining and their ability to minimize and mitigate these impacts. This has created a need to better understand mining and its environmental impacts. The University of Arizona Superfund Research Program Mining educational modules developed educational modules for tribal colleges focusing on environmental impacts of mining, remediation of mining wastes, and sociocultural impacts of mining. Educational modules are independently packaged units of study designed to enhance the learning process and can be modified and adapted to different learning scenarios and objectives. In addition to providing specialized knowledge, the modules feature hands-on activities, incorporation of technology, student involvement, discussion, and exchange of ideas. Modules will aim incorporate traditional ecological knowledge and approaches that promote effective science learning for native students. Modules are designed to augment existing associates of science programs (e.g. biology, chemistry) currently offered at tribal colleges and can be modified for use in K-12 education and for non-tribal audiences.

The publication of the Lerchs Grossmann paper in 1965 outlining a threedimensional graph algorithm for ultimate pit definition set the standard for the mining industry regarding pit optimization. Although the algorithm provides a solution from a static standpoint (i.e., assumes instantaneous mining), it is widely used for commercial packages to generate ultimate pit limits and intermediate phases. However, the solutions delivered are presented in canned reports lacking connection to the original data, which prevents further data analysis and extended reporting. The approach presented in this paper attempts to overcome such barriers by performing openpit optimization through databases. An adaptation of the Lerchs Grossmann graph algorithm is used to generate nodes, arcs and tree structures in customized tables to determine the maximum closure of a graph.

"Tell us how you got involved in mining?I was first exposed to mining at a young age, as a consequence of my dad and his passion for the industry and rock collecting. Even though he graduated with a degree in mining engineering from Washington State University, my dad spent most of his career working as a structural engineer for the Boeing Company. At the time, Boeing supported a range of employee activities and clubs, including one devoted to mineral prospecting, small-scale dredging and rock hounding. My dad was extremely active in the Prospectors Club, where as a family, we spent a good part of my youth tramping around the Pacific Northwest digging for mineral specimens and panning for gemstones and gold. On my mother’s side of the family, I had relatives that mined in Dawson City and Fairbanks, AK which left a family legacy of sorts. I loved the stories that my dad and a close buddy of his, who was a geologist, would tell about various operations and towns, as well as the wild times at the annual Northwest Mining Association (NWMA) meeting in Spokane, WA. My first recollection of ever being at a commercial operation was during a tour of the Bunker Hill Mine with my dad when I was 7 or 8 years old; this had to have been shortly before the May 1972 fire at Sunshine. That visit of the mine and processing facilities made a permanent impression on me. While I always knew there was something special about the Silver Valley, I began to understand why. To this day, I still get the same feeling when I visit historic mining districts like Leadville, Morenci, Virginia City, Butte, Silverton and Barkerville. During our summer excursions to Helena, MT to dig sapphires, we would usually make visits to Butte and watch mine operations inside the Berkley Pit and surface activities at the Kelly and Mountain Con. In high school, I did well in math and science and began entertaining thoughts of pursuing a degree in engineering. Above all, I wanted to go to a college in the West that had a good academic reputation, where I could also play football. As a 6-ft, 190-lb nose guard, my options for a Division I scholarship were pretty slim, and there weren’t that many technical schools in the Northwest that were Division II that offered athletic scholarships. As fate would have it, I was unexpectedly contacted by Marv Kay, a legendary coach at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM), and was recruited to play ball. Fortunately, I had a couple of high school friends who were already attending CSM, and I had just secured a summer internship with Asamera Minerals in Wenatchee, WA. It was as if all the stars had aligned, and, with the support of my parents, I made the decision to attend Mines. Despite the stress of getting through CSM during a period when the mining industry was in freefall, it was a great decision to attend Mines, and I’m thankful for all the opportunities, friendships, and faculty mentoring I received as a student"

The flocculation of -38 pm calcite, hematite and kaolinite aqueous suspensions by the yeast Candida parapsilosis and products derived from rupture of the microorganism was studied. Flocculation of hematite suspensions by the microorganism and its derivatives readily takes place between pH 2.8 and 11.4. Maximum flocculation occurs at about pH 6.5. Flocculation of calcite suspensions by the microorganism and its derivatives readily takes place between pH 7.0 and 11.8. Maximum flocculation occurs at about pH 10.0. Flocculation of kaolinite suspensions was less than that for the other two minerals. However, a soluble fraction derived from the rupture of the organism functioned as a good flocculant for the mineral, albeit at an increased concentration, between pH 2.6 and 11.5. Maximum flocculation occurs between pH 6.8 and 7.2. An attempt is made to relate the behavior of the various systems to the surface characteristics of the minerals and the surface and chemical properties of microorganism and its derivatives. Experimentation used to evaluate the flocculation includes actual flocculation tests, microelectrophoresis measurements and scanning electron microscopy.

Many coal preparation plants discard fine coal (generally minus 100 mesh) because it is difficult to beneficiate economically. At the Kentucky Energy Cabinet Laboratory (KECL), the waste streams from several Kentucky preparation plants were evaluated for cleaning with counter-current column flotation. A series of performance evaluations were conducted using a 0.05 m (2 in.) internal diameter (I.D.) 7.9 m (26 ft.) high laboratory column. The objectives of these tests were to assess the performance in terms of recovery and percent ash in clean coal and to optimize the operating parameters relative to combustible recovery and grade. Refuse streams containing 30-50 percent ash were upgraded to 2-8 percent ash with Btu recoveries of nearly 90 percent. A pilot scale column flotation cell was installed at the Bell County Coal preparation plant. This pilot plant utilized a 5.79 m (19 ft.) high and 0.15 m (6 in.) I.D. column to verify the performance data of the 0.05 m (2 in.) I.D. column for two different waste streams. Performance evaluation and pilot plant testing results related to scale-up are discussed.

INTRODUCTION The headrace tunnel in Amlach is part of a hydro electric power scheme near the city of Lienz in south west Austria. The project is owned and developed by Tiroler Wasserkraftwerke AG, the regional electrical supply utility. The construction work was divided into seven contracts for the entire scheme. The power output will be 60 MW, this being developed from a head of 370 m and water flows of 20 m3/s. The water will be tapped from the river Drau and lead through a 22 km long headrace on the south side of the Puster valley through the Lienzer Dolomiten mountain range. Contract No. 4, which is a joint venture between Mayreder, Züblin, Strabag, Rella and Innerebner, involves the construction of 13.5 km of the headrace. It was decided to bore this from one single adit, which probably makes it the longest pressure tunnel driven from one side by a TBM. (See Fig. 1.) For the tunnelling an Atlas Copco Jarva MK 12 TBM was chosen. The excavation diameter is 3.90 m, with the final lined diameter being in the range of 3.20 to 3.40 m. The back-up is a 145 m long single track rail system supplied by Mühlhäuser (Germany). Side-tipping cars with a capacity each of 8.2 m were used for removing the muck. One California switch was attached to the back-up after 3,000 m, and a second fixed switch was installed after 8,000 m of boring. 3 m long

Premature failure of armoured face conveyor (AFC) chains due to corrosion is a significant proportion of the unplanned downtime experienced on longwall equipment. The AFC chains are constantly in contact with water and wet coal. The premature failure issue of AFC chains has become more prominent since the introduction of longwall top-coal caving with its additional AFC. Reverse osmosis (RO) is a popular water treatment method for reducing salinity and dissolved solids, but its impact on the corrosion of the AFC chains is unclear. This study has been commissioned to investigate the direct effects of RO water on the corrosion of AFC chains. An immersion test was carried out using AFC chain steel submerged in two water samples: untreated dam water and treated water from an RO treatment plant. Elemental analysis was conducted for both water samples, and four corrosion indices were measured for both water samples. The RO water more vigorously dissolves calcium carbonate scales leading to increased corrosion of the AFC chains although the dam water has much higher levels of calcium, chloride, sulphate, sodium, and magnesium. Bicarbonate ions are the main alkaline factor of water that provides the buffering capacity to acids. Decreased alkalinity without balancing other ions in water causes high corrosivity and decreased scaling tendencies.

As is readily apparent, the reliability of the early-stage costs estimated for any mining project are critical to the viability of that project. An estimate too high might leave a potentially profitable deposit undeveloped or worse yet, available to a competitor. One too low might waste investment dollars in a project not yet economically ripe. There are two aspects critical to any estimate: 1. The cost data used to represent the values of the wages, salaries, supplies, and equipment. 2. The design used to determine the engineering parameters upon which the above estimated values are based. Given that all of the information contained in Mining Cost Service is provided by suppliers, equipment manufacturers and mine operators, one wonders why there is any question as to the reliability of cost estimates developed using this information. Given that it is all actual (as opposed to statistically derived) data, where do the problems with estimate reliability lie and what is the impact of the data on that reliability? The following presents a series of analyses designed to assess the reliability of the cost estimating process. Both the actual cost data and the engineering parameters upon which they are based are examined in an attempt to quantify and understand the importance of each. While several sources of cost information are available (Means, Richardson, Primedia?s Equipment Watch, and individual suppliers and manufacturers), the following rely solely on data contained in InfoMine USA, Inc?s, Mining Cost Service and in its Sherpa Mine Cost Estimating Software.

Concentration and composition of rare earth elements (REE) and major elements in the sediment samples from the IOM H11 Fe-Mn nodule deposit, eastern part of the Clarion-Clipperton nodule field (located between the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone - CCFZ; tropical Pacific), have been studied. We show the controls on REE concentrations and described vertical/horizontal variability of selected metals in pelagic sediments from the CCFZ. According to Kato et al. (2011), who analyzed 2000 seafloor sediment samples at 78 sites of the Pacific Ocean, deep-sea mud shows high concentrations (2230 ppm maximum) of ?REY and could be potential resource of these elements in the future. However, our work does not fully confirm that sediments in the IOM H11 are significantly enriched in REE.

The government of India convened a precedent-setting meeting in New Delhi on Nov. 12, 2001.The meeting brought together regulators and the mining industry in an attempt to fix the industry’s mine development problems in that country. More than 150people attended the all-day session. Ram Vilas Paswan, Minister of Coal and Mines, chaired the meeting. Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister of State for Coal and Mines, was also present. The secretary of the Department of Mines and the Joint Secretaries and Additional Secretary also participated. The Department of Mines’ mandate is for economic growth: to get new mine development going and to make investment in mining attractive for both domestic and foreign-owned companies.

INTRODUCTION Many excellent papers have been written and presented regarding agricultural lime and the subject has been covered extensively in books concerning soil science, fertilizing, limestone, etc. We felt challenged to construct a paper that wouldn’t merely be a repetition of past presentations. Therefore, we chose to begin with factors having the most impact on plant growth realizing that the audience is likely to be relatively unfamiliar with this subject. So, we decided to dig deep into the roots of soil and plant growth science in order to better understand the significant role of limestone in this important area. The soil with the higher plants growing upon it forms an open and dynamic ecosystem in which there is flux of energy and material (heat, light, water, nutrients, mineral and organic matter, organisms). Plants root in the soil and then take up oxygen for root respiration, yielding energy for nutrient uptake, water for turgescence and transpiration and use in photosynthesis and the mineral nutrients needed for the synthesis of organic matter. Above the ground the plant takes in light energy and heat using them in photosynthesis to assimilate atmospheric CO2. Photosynthesis is the basic life process of creation. However, we will look at the root room where soil, water, air, and heat economy and the supply of nutrients determine soil fertility and the important role lime plays here. Location is the primary point to be considered when discussing agriculture (climate and soil); secondly, the dynamic and mobility of the minerals (plant nutrients) in the soil; and thirdly the conversion of organic substances into humus. And then there is a great deal of water involved in the growing process. In order to produce 1 kg of dry plant substance, 300 to 800 kg of water must be pumped through the plant and is then lost by transpiration. Cereals, vegetables, and sugar beets consume between 400 to 500 kg of water during the growing process and long-growing crops, such as alfalfa and clover, can consume 600 to 800 kg of water per kg of finished product. Without water, a plant cannot grow. (Reference 1)

S.L. Barua and Y.C. Kim M. Armstrong's paper is very interesting and can be regarded as a pioneering work of applying geostatistics on washed coal. The density levels used in her study are uniformly spaced, which facilitated curve fitting through a proper experimental design. Most of the existing coal washing plants in the US, however, gather washability data at non-uniform intervals which, in turn, affects the goodness of curve fitting. We would like to emphasize the importance of having a proper experimental design, if a similar geostatistical application is to be conducted on washed coal. We, at the University of Arizona, tried the variogram on recovery (Kim, Barua, and Baafi, 1982, SME preprint 82-143) which showed a similar pattern as Fig. 4 of Armstrong's paper. In both cases, the first experimental variogram value is invariably and inexplicably higher than the second variogram value. Although Armstrong ignores the first point because of "small number of sample points," we did not do so because there were 17 sample pairs. As a consequence, we concluded that the obtained experimental variogram was unsatisfactory and that further research is warranted. In other words, this disagreement in variogram interpretation between M. Armstrong and the University of Arizona begs the question whether the experimental variogram of Fig. 4 truly reflects the spatial correlation in washed coal, assuming there is such a correlation. Finally, we wish that Armstrong could have done a similar study on clean sulfur, which is a vital interest to the coal mines in the US. Her implied remark on sulfur in the concluding section of the paper may turn out to be incorrect because our experimental variograms on clean sulfur at different density levels were even less satisfactory than those on recovery.

The primary advantage of using oxalic acid is in the formation during leaching of soluble complexes that are both photo-chemically and microbiologically degradable. In this study, chemical leaching and bioleaching methods were used for quartz sand. Using the ANOVA-Yates test technique, the effects of solids rate, temperature and oxalic acid rate were investigated using chemical leaching experiments. Solids rate and temperature were effective parameters on the chemical leaching. After the tests, the removal of Fe2O3 increased to 97.02%. Finally, the iron content decreased from 0.315% Fe2O3 to 0.0094% Fe2O3 in the leached quartz sand. The effect of pulp density was investigated on the bioleaching experiments. The bioleaching of iron oxides by Aspergillus niger resulted in removal of 47.70% of the total iron in the quartz sand, and suggested that this strain has not a good ability to remove iron impurities from quartz sand in comparison with chemical leaching. The iron content decreased from 0.315% Fe2O3 to 0.164% Fe2O3 in the bioleached quartz sand.

The kinetics on the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was studied by use of series piezoelectric quartz crystal ( SPQC ). Arsenic ioninhibits the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, which is consistent with the previous results by other measuring method. This further demonstrates that the SPQC can monitor the chemical activity of the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Cupric ion accelerates the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The mechanism was discussed, it was considered that copper promotes the protein enzyme of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, rustic yanin, to form over the range of cupric ion concentration studied. There action order of cupric ion in accelerating the bacterial growth is 0.067. The growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans is dependent on temperature, the apparent reaction activation energy decreases from25.56 kJ / mol to 18.32 kJ / mol because of the addition of 10 mg / L Cu(II) to the bacterial growth solution of pH 2.0 at initial inoculum of 10%.

Minerals are fundamental to the U.S. economy, contributing to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels?mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. The estimated growth rate for the real GDP of the United States was 2.1 percent and the nominal GDP was about $13.8 trillion in 2007 (Table 1). The prime interest rate decreased to 7.25 percent in December from 8.25 percent at the beginning of 2007, reflecting actions taken by the Federal Reserve Board to counter financial difficulties surrounding subprime mort-gages. Delinquencies on subprime mortgages increased throughout the year, affecting not only the delinquent home owners but also financial instruments invested in mortgage-backed securities. The average contract mortgage rate for the purchase of previously occupied homes in the United States was 6.35 percent in November; a slight decrease from 6.37 percent in January but still greater than 5.34 percent reported in July 2003, the lowest rate in the past five years. With the tightening of credit, the seasonally adjusted annualized rate for new privately owned housing starts declined 27 percent from December 2006 to November 2007. Over the past few decades a great deal of effort has gone into characterizing the effects of frother type and concentration in flotation using a variety of two-phase techniques. Whilst useful and informative, this research still does not assist in the selection of suitable frothers for three-phase industrial-scale froths. This paper investigates the effects of frother type and concentration in a three-phase industrial froth. The objective was to determine if progress could be made in terms of understanding the behavior of frothers in flotation and understanding how they affect the sub-processes occurring in the pulp and froth phases and, ultimately, the metallurgical performance of a flotation cell.

The Brightwater regional wastewater treatment facility, under construction in King County, WA, includes an extensive conveyance system that will feature deep, soft-ground tunnels and shafts. Excavation of the Ballinger Way Receiving Portal to 65.8 m (216 ft) below grade through challenging geology was accomplished by means of artificial ground freezing. This paper discusses freeze design development, system installation and monitoring, and the contractual and construction challenges that were overcome, including work sequencing and excavation means and methods, together with lessons learned.

A glance at the accompanying table reveals that for the first time in many years the industrial minerals field did not post significant gains in production. Gypsum, cement, sand and gravel, and crushed stone production-which are very sensitive to construction industry performance-barely managed to stay even, or in fact, declined slightly. Even barite production, in spite of increased oil and gas drilling, was off 5% in 1979 from 1978. Domestic fluorspar production continued to decline while imports, primarily from Mexico, South Africa, and Spain, rose 11%. Worldwide production of iodine (which is used primarily as a catalyst, animal feed additive, and in ink and colorants, stabilizers, pharmaceuticals, photographic film, and disinfectants) grew about 9% on a worldwide basis-from 10.75 Tg to 11.16 Tg. This does not include US production. The two US producers increased demand as apparent domestic production increased about 5%. Increasing energy costs and the transportation situation have had a prohibitive effect on the industrial minerals field. The critical shortage of railroad cars, according to consultant Neil Johnson, is due to several factors: • High capital investment rind interest rates needed to build new equipment, • Accidents, obsolescence, and failure to repair equipment reduced car availability, •Reduction in some train schedules due to fuel economy, and •Increased turnaround time as a result of new safety regulations. Railroad rates have increased an average of 7% per year for the past 10 years. Last year's increases were about 11.1% due to fuel costs and surcharges. Truck shipments have increased their penetration in certain areas of the southeast because of the shortage of box cars and the producers' demand for quick shipment. Some producers report a 15-20% increase in truck use. In the feldspar-mica area, which formerly made most shipments by rail, trucks are now used for about half the shipments. Marketing prices, as expected, increased due to higher costs for energy, power, labor, and supplies used in production. Estimated average price increases were about 10% which, in many cases, did not cover increased production costs. Digitalization and automation technology offer new possibilities to increase productivity and obtain higher levels of autonomy in mining operations. Introducing autonomous systems into mining is not only a technical problem in terms of effectiveness and efficiency, nor a problem of safety in human-automation interactions. The systems also need to be designed and developed so that they foster healthy and attractiveworking environments. The design and development phase of newmining technology has not been extensively studied previously. To fill this knowledge gap, we investigated technology developers’ basic assumptions about humans and their interactions with the technology they develop. We conducted five semi-structured workshops within an EU funded project concerned with developing digitalization and automation solutions for the mining industry. The data suggests that many critical functions will still be under human control in future mining systems. The results also indicate increased complexity in the interaction between autonomous systems and humans as the technology becomes more advanced. As a result, we suggest that a human perspective, based on sociotechnical principles, should not only be considered in implementing the technology at mines but also in the early conceptual phases of developing and designing the technology. This will ensure healthy and attractive work environments in the future mining industry.
