Titanium is an exciting structural material that can offer significant strength-to-weight advantages over currently used alloys. However, its Achilles? heel is its costly, energy-intensive production process that effectively eliminates it from competing with aluminium and high-strength steels, apart from critical applications where titanium forms only a small component of the total cost. Current attempts are being made to reduce the cost of titanium products and these recognize the importance of minimizing the costs over the total production chain. Powder metallurgy (PM) technologies play a crucial role within this, as the output of the existing and potential primary metal production methods is in the form of sponge or powder. By using PM, costly remelting and forming operations can then be avoided, except in the manufacture of large components. Metal injection moulding (MIM) is an effective process for producing complex net-shape components in large volumes from metal powders. Nevertheless, the commercial use of titanium powders in this process is still in its infancy. The only major supplier of feedstock utilizes a polyacetal-based binder. This gives good green strength but requires a catalytic nitric acid process to remove most of the binder prior to thermal treatment. As this involves additional and expensive equipment and is a potentially hazardous process, there is interest in finding an alternative binder system that can be debound either purely thermally or that involves a less hazardous, more environmentally friendly solvent. This paper describes the use of capillary rheometry to characterize the influence of temperature and shear rates on the flow behaviour of potential binder systems for titanium MIM feedstock. Heavy metals and sulphates in acid mine drainage (AMD) can beadsorbed onto bentonite clay, leaving clean water and a heavy metal loaded clay precipitate as products. Due to the toxicity of heavy metals, the clay could not be disposed of safely in the past. A method was thus required to remove the heavy metal content from the clay. Acid leaching was proposed to liberate the heavy metals from the loaded clay. Sulphuric, nitric and hydrochloric acid were considered as lixiviants. Loaded clay samples were leached over a range of pH values from 1 to 3.5 to identify an optimum leaching condition. From the results it was found that metals can berecovered from loaded bentonite clay by means of acid leaching and the optimum pH for heavy metal liberation was found to be 2.5, with uranium as an exception, being optimally leached at a pH of 3. This allows for the possibility of selective leaching. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction analyses indicated that the clay structure did not deteriorate significantly during acid leaching, suggesting that the bentonite could be reused. The treatment of AMD with bentonite clay, and subsequent acid leaching of the clay, is a sustainable solution, and current outcomes could possibly lead to industrial implementation of the process during water purifying and metal recovery from waste streams. Southern Africa has a history rich in the pyrometallurgical processing of ores. Two of the alloys produced are high-carbon ferromanganese (74?83 per cent Mn) and silicomanganese (59?67 per cent Mn and 14?31 per cent Si). The largest land-based manganese ore deposit in the world is based in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. In 2010, 6.3 Mt of ore from the deposit was exported, mainly to China, Norway, Japan, and India, and an estimated 1.1 Mt beneficiated locally to produce manganese ferroalloys. In southern Africa the producers of manganese ferroalloys are Metalloys and Assmang, and of silicomanganese Transalloys, Mogale Alloys, and Match Corporation. Submerged arc furnace technology is utilized in the production of high-carbon ferromanganese (HCFeMn) and silicomanganese, applying the discard slag practice in both instances. The carbon content of HCFeMn is reduced using converter technology and that of SiMn using the Perrin process. Ninety per cent of the world?s manganese ferroalloys production is consumed by the steel industry. The consumption (and production) of manganese ferroalloys therefore closely follows worldwide steel production. From 2001 to 2010, the doubling of the worldwide production of manganese ferroalloys can be attributed to an increase in production capacity in Asia and Oceania, with the largest increase in the production of SiMn. Manganese ferroalloys produced in Asia and Oceania are mainly for the local market, with North America, Europe, Russia, and Turkey the major markets for alloys from southern Africa. The major challenges faced by the southern African manganese ferroalloy producers are increasing electricity tariffs and productivity of labour, which require a concerted effort by all parties involved to achieve a satisfactory solution. The problem of corrosion of reinforcement in concrete structures is internationally recognized and represents the single biggest expenditure in the preservation of steel reinforced concrete structures. While the corrosion protection of the reinforcing steel is no substitute for design and the placement of good quality concrete, it does provide for a viable and economical extension of structural integrity and service life in the day-to-day and practical environment in which concrete structures are constructed. The mechanism of corrosion attack and consequent deterioration of reinforced concrete structures is well understood and documented. New structures can be designed and built to withstand corrosion. However, due to short-term economic restraints, many new reinforced concrete structures continue to suffer as a result of corrosion damage, which results from the corrosion of the steel reinforcing. This paper explores the economic and practical benefits offered by the application of hot dip galvanizing as a viable means of protecting reinforcing steel concrete structures. The paper also discusses technical misconceptions that exist about application and performance provided by the use of hot dip galvanized reinforcing steel.

The use of machine vision in the monitoring and control of metallurgical plants has become a very attractive option in the last decade, especially since computing power has increased drastically in the last few years. The use of cameras as a non-intrusive measurement mechanism not only holds the promise of uncomplicated sampling but could provide more consistent monitoring, as well as assistance in decision making and operator and metallurgist training. Although the very first applications of machine vision were in the platinum industry, no automated process control has been developed for platinum group metals (PGMs) as yet. One of the reasons is that to date froth features could not be related to key performance indicators, such as froth grade and recovery. A series of laboratory experiments was conducted on a laboratory-scale platinum froth flotation cell in an effort to determine the relationship between the platinum grade and a combined set of image features and process conditions. A fractional factorial design of experiments was conducted, investigating 6 process conditions, namely air flow rate (x1), pulp level (x2), collector dosage (x3), activator dosage (x4), frother dosage (x5) and depressant dosage(x6), each at levels. Videos were recorded and analysed to extract 20 texture features from each image. By using artificial neural networks (ANN), the nonlinear relationship between the image variables and process conditions and the froth flotation grades could be established. Positive results indicate that the addition of image features to process conditions could be used as sufficient input into advanced model based control systems for flotation plants. The quality of Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS) at Skorpion Zinc is of utmost importance for efficient operation of the Solvent Extraction (SX) Plant. Suspended solids in the PLS forms CRUD in the settlers, resulting in reduced zinc transfer capacity and increased impurity carry over to Electrowinning. The Ishigaki Fibre-Wakishimizu filter (fibre media rapid filtration equipment) has been identified as polishing filter that potentially could remove solids from the PLS of Skorpion Zinc. A pilot unit with 20m³/h capacity was tested on site over a period of 9 months under plant operating conditions in the refinery. The FW filter produces a clear filtrate, acceptable for the Solvent Extraction. Turbidity is improved by 72%. Gravimetric analysis indicates a 47% removal of solids. However, the gravimetric method is biased by a co-precipitation of saturated salts during the analysis. Filter media is blinded by the Skorpion Zinc PLS solution, as result of suspended solids and process chemistry. The media could not be regenerated to acceptable conditions. Further testwork to investigate the impact of process solution chemistry modification on blinding is undertaken. Based on the outcome of this investigation a final decision on the FW filter can be taken.

Four mining alternatives for exploiting an ultra-deep orebody were assessed through a multidisciplinary evaluation process which involved: the generation of a 3D geological model; the design and scheduling of life-of-mine layouts; the analysis of anticipated ventilation and cooling conditions; the study of rock-related risks of mining in ultra-deep stress environments; the logistic implications of transporting men, rock and materials; and, lastly, the economic implications of each option. Once results from the integrated mine design assessment were available, mine planners were faced with an important problem to solve: how to identify the optimal mine design alternative when numerous assessment measures and multiple decision criteria needed to be considered simultaneously? To address this ‘multiple-attribute decision problem’ and arrive at the ‘optimal layout for ultra-depth’, a generic decision methodology that uses principles of ‘utility’ was applied. The methodology assumes that ‘single-value risk estimators’ do not account for the inherent variability of real conditions. Therefore, risk estimators were represented by statistical distributions of their incremental changes, where applicable. The stochastic variables, once defined, are used as inputs in the ‘utility’-based layout decision scheme. This ‘utility’-based decision methodology offers a framework for mine design decisions to be made objectively, when complex trade-offs between multiple risk domains need to be considered simultaneously. The ?Kolwezi Zinc Plant?, in French ?Usines à Zinc de Kolwezi? (UZK), has produced about 910 000 dry metric tons of residues during the hydrometallurgical treatment of calcines from sulphide zinc concentrates. The zinc hydro plant residues contain on average 19.47% Zn, 2.7% Cu, 2.1% Pb, 26.6% Fe, 0.12% Cd, 0.39% As, 157ppm Ag, 447.8 ppm Ga, 475.4 ppm Ge, etc. This material was dumped in five ponds in the vicinity of the plant. The high Fe content in the ore concentrates induced important conversion of some of zinc and copper into ferrites during the roasting process. Those ferrites are very stable compounds, which are difficult to leach with dilute sulphuric acid solution. Therefore, they mainly report to the leaching residues. Hot leaching has been successfully applied to the treatment of zinc hydro plant residues. The method, however, presents the disadvantage of simultaneously dissolving iron(Fe). It is then necessary to remove an important iron quantity from solution prior to zinc and other metals recovery.

Discussions on reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction (RPEEE) include the CRIRSCO 2019 reporting template, JORC 2012, SAMREC 2016, CIM 2019 Guideline, and Regulation SK-1300. These reporting codes all conform to the principles of reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction. To demonstrate that all mineral resources align with the RPEEE principles, the Competent Person is responsible for endorsing the mineral resource estimate. Moreover, establishing mineral resources and RPEEE requires technical input from numerous technical specialists, such as mining and geotechnical engineers, metallurgical engineers, social and environmental specialists, financial and governmental practitioners, and more. The aim is to improve the transparency of the disclosure of mineral resources and guarantee the investor or potential investor that the reporting of mineral resources is based on reliable technical, economic, environmental, social, and other relevant factors. This paper discusses the important protocols and definitions in some international reporting codes for the purposes of developing a guide memoire that will assist the Competent Person to interpret, establish and apply RPEEE appropriately and easily.

The safety of mining operations is significantly influenced by the in situ stress fields in which the mining excavations are created. From the point of view of planning of mining operations, the in situ stress field is a most important input parameter for valid modelling of excavations. Many in situ stress measurements have been carried out for mining and civil engineering projects in southern Africa over the past 30 to 40 years. A database of in situ stress measurement results and observations has been compiled. This paper presents results extracted from the database which are considered to be of particular interest to mining areas in South Africa. The database will permit the estimation of likely stress conditions in new areas of mining, provide a basis for evaluation of results from future in situ stress measurement programmes, provide a basis for comparison of observed behaviour with expected behaviour, and provide a source of data on which realistic design and layout analyses can be based. The information contained in the database indicates that horizontal to vertical stress ratios in the Carletonville, Klerksdorp and Rustenburg areas are significantly higher than the value of 0,5which is commonly used in mine layout planning.

The Chairman declared the meeting open and extended a welcome to all visitors including Mr R. C. J. Goode, President of the Institute. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS GENERAL MEETING The Minutes of the General Meeting held on the 26th June, 1969, were read and adopted. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT The Chairman presented a report outlining the activities of the Branch during the past year. Membership of the local Branch had increased from 80 to 99 during the year. DECLARATIONOF OFFICEBEARERS The Chairman announced that owing to his transfer out of the Witbank area, he was unable to accept the nomination as Chairman for a further year of office. The outgoing committee had elected Mr J. Meintjes Chairman and Mr A. Bain Vice-Chairman for the ensuing year. Mr J. Meintjes then took the chair. Mr J. Meintjes thanked Mr C. G. Sowry for his successful steering of the Branch during its period of inauguration. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Tech (Metallurgical Engineering) degree Fine coal of the Goedehoop Colliery is dewatered by centrifuging before being sold. Full-scale plant tests were carried out to reduce residual cake moisture by the addition of surfactants. It is believed that by modifying the interface between the coal surface and the adherent surface water, as well as the water occluded in the cake voids, drainage is improved. Two anionic surfactants at concentrations up to 150 g/t were tested on coal of <0.5 mm size. The results demonstrate that quite high additions of surfactant (80 g/t)were needed to reduce moisture from 20 to about 17?18%. It was observed that when increasing surfactant additions at low levels, within a very narrow concentration range, the retained moisture first increased sharply only to decrease sharply immediately thereafter; this effect points to a critical surfactant concentration. Based on the obtained results, the use of surfactants cannot be recommended at this stage; further investigations under more controlled conditions are required.

In over ninety per cent of mineral sand plants, the most commonly used equipment is the spiral concentrator. The tonnage treated over typical spiral plants can range from as low as 200 ton per hour up to 6 000 tons per hour. Due to the limited capacity of each spiral, plants consist of multiple spirals assembled into banks. The mixture of minerals present in the sand feed requires several spiral stages to achieve the desired mineral recovery. Due to the complexity of the spiral circuits, there are always some design and operating problems that present themselves in plants. These range from slurry distribution, spirals operating at incorrect design parameters and feed variations. The material being treated is difficult to maintain in suspension due to its high density, resulting in segregation and preferential flow in pipelines, distributors and sumps. The objective of this paper is to highlight common problems associated with spiral installations to designers and operators of plants. Practical solutions are recommended in order to prevent and minimize these mistakes in the design. These solutions may be used to improve performance on operating plants.

The introduction of extra low profile (XLP) mechanized equipment within Anglo Platinum is aligned with the overall New Mining Technologies strategy to focus on continuing modernization of our mining operations` incorporating injury-free production and cost-effective mining technologies. The method allows for the introduction of a suite of ultra-low profile equipment in narrow reef (1.2 m) stoping operations. For the first time it is now possible to achieve total trackless mechanization at these widths and indications are that XLP mining has the potential to add more value when benchmarked with conventional mining and low profile (1.8 m) room and pillar methods. Various mine layouts were tested at different sites within Anglo Platinum and the XLP breast mining layout proved to be the most effective. This paper describes the results of the trials at Waterval Shaft and concludes with recommendations on our future strategy on implementation of XLP technology within Anglo Platinum.

Abstract: In order to develop non-destructive methods in studying physical and mechanical properties of rock and replacing them with difficult and expensive static methods, several ultrasonic tests were carried out on cylindrical rock specimens in accordance with the ISRM suggested methods and velocity of P and S waves were determined. Also, density, porosity, water absorption, uniaxial compressive strength and indirect tensile strength were determined for each specimen in accordance with ISRM suggested methods. According to above tests static and dynamic elastic constants were calculated After statistical analysis of data obtained from tests, the relationships between velocity of elastic waves and physical or mechanical parameters were determined and some equations were obtained. Also similar analyses were performed on static and dynamic constants and some equations were extracted. Using these equations, the physical and mechanical parameters of rock and also static elastic constants can be estimated by conducting simple and quick tests (i.e. ultrasonic tests). Abriß: Um zu entwickeln, die zerstörungsfreien Methoden für Studieren die physischen und mechanischen Eigentümer von Steinen und auch ist für Ersetzen diese Methoden mit schwierigen teuren statischen Methoden, mehrere altrasonic Prüfungen auf zylindrischen Steinproben gemäß ISRM anregenden Methoden und den Geschwindigkeiten von S und P Wellen bestimmt worden sind durchgeführt worden. Außer der Dichtheit und der Porosität betonen Wasser Aufnahme und monoaxial Widerstand und dehnbaren indirekten Widerstand jeder Probe betreffend der erhaltenen Ergebnisse die atmosphärische Aufladung sind bestimmt worden und die dynamischen Faktoren der Steine sind kalkuliert worden. Nachdem statistische Analyse die Korrelation der Ergebnisse zwischen der Geschwindigkeit elastischer Wellen und mechanischer und physischer Eigentümer der Steine erhalten worden ist, und mehrere Verhältnisse sind vorgeschlagen worden. Eine ähnliche Analyse ist auf atmosphärischer Aufladung und dynamischen Faktoren durchgeführt worden und einige Verhältnisse sind erhalten worden. Mit Hilfe dieser Verhältnisse die physischen und mathematischen Eigentümer von Steinen und auch können die Statistik Faktoren durch einfachen und schnellen altrasonic Prüfungen erhalten werden. For years urethane screen surfaces have been used in a wide range of wet screening applications where openings from as fine as 100 microns and coarser have been used. The purpose of this paper is to expose the reader to new developments in both screen surface and screening equipment technologies which allow an end user to consider urethane screen surfaces for fine screening applications. These technologies allow an end user to use the inherent advantages of urethane with regards to wear resistance while also realizing the benefits that a high oper area urethane screen surface can bring. These benefits include non blinding characteristics and feed capacities that which rival that of traditional stainless steel surfaces. The paper will highlight the features of this patented urethane screen surface technology and the screening machines they are used in conjunction with. There will also be a presentation of case studies of commercial installations where these technologies are utilized. These case studies are from the base metals industry therefore relevance to the conference is direct and not inferred. Included in the paper will also be constraints which must be taken into account when considering urethane screen surfaces such as temperature and chemical attacks. This paper will expose potential end users to a possibility of using screens to achieve extremely accurate size separations in applications where screens were previously not considered. The paper will explain and demonstrate that prior concerns of screen surface blinding, high screen surface consumption rates and large screen surface area requirements can be eliminated by proper utilization of high open area urethane screen surfaces.

1. A NEW CONTEXT FOR METAL INDUSTRY Producers and owners of industrial extractive sites are living hard times due to Environmental pressure and liabilities. This is valid whatever the region in the world, it is just a question of time. On one hand, the normative environmental pressure is increasing through more severe regulations and controls on all pollution sources and production materials. [ ] Furthermore, more impurities are extracted and captured, more the volume of the related wastes is increasing. But disposal costs are increasing, disposal areas for wastes are restricted, markets for wastes are limited and technologies for waste treatment are, most of the time, not available. On the other hand, for most of the extractive industries, the costs required to get access to refine primary raw material are killing the profitability of the industry. Definitively, a technological and economical breakthrough is ongoing: extractive industries have to increase their feed from secondary material and to be involved more and more with the recycling business.

"The South African squat coal pillar strength formula, developed by researchers from the Chamber of Mines Research Organization in the 1980s, predicts an exponential increase in coal pillar strength once a critical width-to-height ratio of 5 is exceeded. The arguments that have been proposed in favour of this formula are discussed critically in this paper.Field experience with squat pillars in the USA and evidence from published physical, analytical, and numerical model pillar studies corroborate the fact that a squat effect is unlikely to occur in coal pillars at width-to-height ratios less than 10. Furthermore, an exponential increase in peak strength of coal pillars does not exist. An alternative design criterion for squat pillars in South Africa is therefore suggested. IntroductionFive decades of coal pillar research in South Africa have produced a wealth of information on the mechanisms contributing to the strength and failure of in-situ coal pillars and accompanying phenomena. The relevant knowledge was sourced from, and for, a South African coal mining environment that remained largely unchanged in the second half of the 20th century. The depth of mining seldom exceeded 250 m, with mined seam thicknesses averaging 3 m and typical pillar width-to-height ratios (w/h) of 3–4.It is therefore not surprising that comparatively little research has been directed at the prediction of coal pillar performance in deeper deposits, where squat pillars of larger width-to-height ratios will be required to support the overlying strata. However, a thorough understanding of squat pillar performance will be necessary should the remaining deep coal deposits of the country be extracted in future, for instance in the Waterberg or Ermelo coalfields.A squat coal pillar strength formula has already been proposed in South Africa. The origin of this formula will be discussed in some detail in the following sections and its appropriateness will be critically reviewed against a great amount of evidence from relevant squat coal pillar research conducted internationally."

New technologies, such as computer based learning, wireless computing, internet2, online courses, distance learning, and in general multimedia applications are being implemented in the higher education sector in an increasing manner. However, these implementations are not coherent, and lack standards. However, one example of the existing standards is the development and implementation of the virtual learning environments. These technology tools help in delivering the eLearning objectives. There is a major initiative in Europe (eEurope action plan) in promoting eLearning towards creating a knowledge-based society. Technology implementation is the major driver for achieving the eLearning objectives. A two-year pilot project on implementing technology tools including virtual learning environment (VLE), video-conferencing, and simulation and visualization was carried out for providing a blended learning environment for undergraduate and graduate students in Mining Engineering (undergraduate) and Mineral Deposit Evaluation (M.Sc.) course at the Imperial College London. The pilot project was funded by the Imperial College Centre for Educational Development (ICCED). The project did contribute towards activities for creating an institute-wide eLearning strategy in line with the eEurope action plan.
