In an attempt to better understand the impact that large mining shots will have on verifying compliance with the international, worldwide, Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT, no nuclear explosion tests), a series of seismic and videographic experiments has been conducted during the past two years at the Black Thunder Coal Mine. Personnel from the mine and Los Alamos National Laboratory have cooperated closely to design and perform experiments to produce results with mutual benefit to both organizations. This paper will summarize our activities, highlighting the unique results of each.

If dynamite is used in hot metal mines, it may be subject to decomposition, and the increase in nitroglycol vapour under the high temperatures causes bad headaches of workers. Also the explosives containing ammonium nitrate are very dangerous when mixed with sulfide ores at a high temperature!. Therefore we developed a heat-resistant water gel explosive which is safe to be handled at these hot metal mines.

In February 28, 2001 JOULE coordinated the first tests with an electronic detonator in South America at an iron ore operation - ITABIRA MINES from the Brazilian COMPANHIA VALE DO RIO DOCE (CVRD) - the largest producer and exporter of iron ore in the world. ITABIRA MINES (CAU and CONCEI O) belong to one of the complexes, called the Southern System, producing 56 million tons of ROM as well as concentrated products and pellets. This paper is going to describe the tests at ITABIRA MINES with results indicating the improvement in the excavator productivity and reduction of the mining global costs (due to the better performance of the equipment and potential reduction of the maintenance cost).

The paper analyzed the dynamic stress in the rock around the tunnel and the effect on the stress variation for the different blasting parameters. Also, the paper verified the theoretical results by dynamic photoelastical tests and provided helpful reference for the design of blasting near a tunnel.

Just one year ago at the 1986 Annual Meeting of the Society of Explosives Engineers, Dr. Calvin J. Konya presented a paper entitled "Presplitting Granite Using Pyrodex, A Propellant.'' Since that time more evidence has been developed to support the concept that "...gas energy can be the principal splitting force and that the stress wave or shock wave is not necessary to cause the presplitting action to occur." Work done in Vermont and Georgia is presented, and the ability to split granite without causing radial cracking of the bore holes is demonstrated.

An increase in construction and quarry operations has necessitated blasting activities in areas once considered rural and in the close proximity of transmission pipelines. A method to determine the maximum allowable bending stress by the formulas outlined by the Battelle Memorial Institute report of October, 1962, and the assumed stress comparison with actual measured data is presented. A direct relationship between pipe stress and ground particle velocity is shown, and a method to predict stress by relating stress to charge weight and distance from the shot point is discussed.

This paper details the investigation of a fatal explosion that occurred on April 8, 2011 at a magazine used to store fireworks in Waikele, HI. The fireworks had been confiscated by the Bureau of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement after they were informed that a container shipped to the United States contained illegal fireworks. Four groups of cardboard cartons that were marked as 1.4G (consumer fireworks) were determined to be consistent with the more explosive 1.3G type, commercial display fireworks. The subcontractor retained to destroy these fireworks stored the shipment in the subject magazine and was in the process of disassembling them on the day the explosion occurred.

The Bureau of Mines performed a comparative study of nine sites at eight surface coal mines to determine if the presence of near-surfaced underground abandoned workings resulted in the generation of adverse long-duration, low-frequency blast vibrations. Six of the nine sites had underlying workings, and two had thick layers of low-velocity unconsolidated surface material.

The breakage process in blasting takes place in space and in time and the latter will determine the degree of fragmentation, shape of the muckpile and the extent of displacement. The shock wave travels at the velocity of sound in the material and it can easily be measured. The cracks' velocity is only 0.38 % of the velocity of sound. The number of cracks at any distance from the explosion cavity, their length and the time of development can be calculated.

During the detonation process 20-30% of the energy is being consumed only on the quarrying pro-cess. The remaining amount of the energy generates harmful effects such as: shock wave, acoustic wave, fly rocks and ground vibrations. In the late 70’s and early 80’s in conjunction with other oil and gas well stimulation studies, personnel from the Dynamic Effects Lab performed model testing to demonstrate the effectiveness of utilizing an open section of borehole just before a plug. We called the process stem induced fracturing. The open section beneath the stem was used to increase the pressure magnitude and spread out the duration of the pressure pulse. This technique was later utilized to by Frank Chiapetta (1) in the fracture and fragmentation of rock in quarry blasting situations. He called his technique air deck blasting. In fact, Frank found that the Russians had previously discovered the same technique. There is currently interest in utilizing air deck blasting with an open section of hole beneath the explosive at the bottom of the bore hole to better remove the toe in a fragmentation shot. This paper reviews the development of stem induced fracturing and then describes a series of model tests conducted to measure borehole pressure at points along a borehole when an explosive charge is detonated at the midpoint of the borehole. Tests were conducted in both stiff boreholes (aluminum) and less rigid boreholes (PMMA-Plexiglas). Pressure time profiles were measured at the charge site, midway between the charge and the bottom of the hole, at the stemming at the top of the borehole, and at the bottom of the borehole. Crack initiation sites and crack propagation were also determined in the PMMA models. Some high speed pictures were taken of the event in the PMMA.

In this paper vibratory crack response is compared to that produced by volumetric changes in foundation soils induced by natural events. These natural phenomena include changes in the water table, changes in soil moisture, and formation of ice lenses to name a few. Previous papers have compared vibratory responses of cracks to atmospheric effects such as those produced by the passage of weather fronts and daily changes in temperature and humidity. Periodicity of these atmospheric effects is on the order of a day to half a dozen days. Thus it is possible to observe atmospheric effects with measurement over a period of weeks to several months. On the other hand, crack response produced by volumetric changes in foundation soils occurs over a period of many months and/or may be seasonal in nature if not longer in the case of drought. Thus its measurement requires long periods of observation (many months to significant fractions of a year) or observation during critical seasons. Since it occurs over long periods of time, its observation may be obscured by climatologically induced crack response. These soil volume changes are compared with climatic data to describe the correlative nature of crack response in time with the soil volume change phenomena and likely climatic causes.

This paper presents the results of ground vibration and air blast measurements from tunnel blasting activities during the construction of the Beylerbeyi-Kucuksu waste water tunnel under a residential area in Istanbul, Turkey. Within the scope of the study, the blasting pattern of the tunnel was engineered using Tunnel2000 design software and field studies and measurements for evaluating the productivity and safety of shots were realized for 136 rounds. During the study, the advance of the tunnel, face condition, ground vibration, air blast and neighbours’ complains and comments after every round were observed and the tunnel pattern was improved. Finally, an empirical relation for this tunnel route was developed between scaled distance and maximum amount of explosives, to continue activities in a safe and productive manner.
