Among the different valences of vanadium, V (?) is insoluble in acid, V (?) and V (?) is in-soluble in water but soluble in acid. Vanadium mainly exists as V (?) in vanadium titanium-rich material obtained by reduction -milling-separation from vanadiferous titanomagnetite. Therefore, the vanadium titanium-rich material can not be used to extract vanadium by acid directly. In this paper, the vanadium leaching was studied by oxidation roasting and acid leaching. Through oxidation roasting, vanadium is transformed from the insoluble V (?) into V (?) or V (?) in order to improve the leaching of vanadium. The results show that vanadium leaching increases significantly by oxidation roasting-acid leaching. Leaching of vanadium is up to 70.18% under the optimized conditions of roasting temperature of 950 ?, roasting time of 40 min, sulfuric acid concentration of 40%, leaching time of 4h, leaching temperature of 95 ? and liquid to solid ratio of 4 : 1.

In view of the bad effect that Na-bentonite direct adsorb Pb2+-containing wastewater, this article has carried out two kinds modification treatment on Na-bentonite: the direct microwave radiation modification and microwave radiation organic modification by adding quaternary ammonium salt?cetyltrimethylammonium bromide,and analysis the main influencing factors of the modification effect. In static conditions, preparing Pb2+-containing wastewater as the research object, it has respectively studied the effects of Na-bentonite, microwave soil of direct microwave modification and microwave soil of organic modification on the process of adsorption Pb2+, and discusses the effects of pH value, temperature, adsorbent dosage, stirring time on the adsorption Pb2+ in wastewater by modified bentonite, at the same time it does a verification test to the practical Pb2+-containing wastewater. Comparison the effects of adsorption Pb2+ in wastewater, the results show that organic modified microwave bentonite is obviously better than direct microwave modified bentonite and Na-bentonite, and can make 6 mg/L Pb2+-containing wastewater meet the national discharge standards. Through scanning electron microscope, the result of test is that organic modified microwave bentonite is the cause of improving adsorption Pb2+ in wastewater. Preparing modified bentonite by microwave heating will not only shorten the response time, reduce energy consumption and work-load, but also modified effect is good.

"The floatabiliby of chelate CF-collector for zinc and lead oxide minerals was described. It found that CF-collector possesses a strong collection power for zinc and lead oxide minerals as well as excellent selectivity for the gangue minerals. A new technology of zinc and lead oxide flotation with CF reagent as a collector, lead nitrite as a activator and water glass as modifier was presented. The mechanism of interaction between reagents and minerals was discussed by means of adsorption, zeta potential, nephelometric titration, XPS and infrared spectra was investigated.CF-collector, newly developed by Beijing General Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (BGRIMM), is a kind of chelate collector for the flotation of oxide minerals. CF-collector mainly consists of N-nitroso-N-phenylhydroxylamine ammonium salt. The CF-collector was used for the selective flotation of scheelite in the Chinese plants.In this paper, the effects of the dosages of activator Pb(NO3)2 and depressants (sodium hexametaphosphate, polyphosphate, water glass and salified water glass) on the floatabilities of several minerals (cerussite, smithsonite, calcite, dolomite, limonite and quartz) as well as their mixtures were investigated in the presence of the CF-collector. The results show that the CF-collector is the excellent collector for selective flotation of cerussite and smithsonite. Pb(NO3)2 can selectively activate the oxides of lead and zinc resulting in a decrease of the CF-collector dosage. The sodium hexametaphosphate plus the salified water glass are the effective depressants for gangue minerals. Based on the above facts, the “CF process”, namely, used CF reagent as a collector, Pb (NO3) 2 as a activator, and sodium hexametaphosphate plus salified water glass as depressant, has been used for the flotation separation of the lead oxide mixtures or zinc oxide mixtures without disliking and heating. For the feed lead assaying 19.07%, the lead concentrate assaying 49.81% Pb at the recovery 80.69% was obtained after one step flotation. For the feed zinc assaying 12.85%, a zinc concentrate of assaying 29.56% Zn at recovery 83.87% was obtained."

"Over the last 5 years, an ambitious project has been undertaken at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) aiming to isolate, study and, if possible, model the effect of particle size, liberation and collector adsorption density on the floatability of mineral particles. As part of this project, we have conducted highly controlled flotation test-work, combined with state-of-the-art solution and surface analytical techniques such as High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS) and detailed mineralogical analysis to fully characterize the flotation behavior of a natural ore.The flotation tests were undertaken using a high-grade lead-zinc ore from BHP-Billiton's Cannington mine (Australia) in a specially designed continuously operated laboratory scale flotation rig. Solution and adsorbed collector concentrations were measured independently during the course of the flotation tests using HPLC based ex-situ techniques. Liberation studies were performed using the JKMRC Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) on selected size intervals of different streams to estimate the specific surface area of galena. These results were used to calculate the collector adsorption density (collector coverage) on galena particles, with the eventual aim of developing a mathematical model describing the relationship between pulp chemistry, feed mineralogy, and floatability of galena particles."

"Slag foaming occurs in several pyrometallurgical processes. These processes include steelmaking in basic oxygen steelmaking furnaces and electric arc furnaces as well as various non-ferrous operations like sulphide smelting/converting and base metal slag cleaning. Although slag foaming in steelmaking processes has been extensively researched, little attention has been given to slag foaming in non-ferrous operations. Slag foaming phenomena are complex because often the system consists of three or more phases. With this in mind, factors previously identified as influencing slag foaming were investigated. These include the slag basicity, physical properties of the slag, namely viscosity, surface tension and density, the formation of particles due to undercooling of the slag and the FexO concentration in the slag.Slag foaming was investigated in a vertical tube furnace. The different slags were contained in alumina crucibles and bubbling argon gas through the molten slag induced foaming. The foam height was measured by using stainless steel probes and a voltmeter. The conductivity of the slags made it possible to measure the foam height from the position of the probes when the electrical circuit was completed. Slags were foamed at different temperatures to investigate the effect of solid precipitates.The effect of increasing FexO concentration was found to decrease the foam index due to lower viscosities, but higher surface tension depression appears to have led to increased foam index values at high FexO concentrations."

Professor A.M. Gaudin and his students at MIT were dedicated to understanding the fundamentals of mineral processing and as a consequence were constantly searching for better quantatative descriptions of size reduction, liberation and mineral separations. I have had the good fortune of meeting Professor Gaudin and working with many the modeling pioneers who followed him. I have observed first hand the refinement of mineral processing models as they increased in realisticness moving up the steps of the pyramid (see figure below) from pure empiricism to the current pinacle of physics based models. During this journey our industry benefited significanbtly as model prediction errors were reduced from ± 20% to ± 1%. Unit operation and plant simulations improved in accuracy and speed of calculations.

"Over the last few years, the copper mining industry has been facing a changing scenario with respect to both the market and society which has resulted in taking a closer look at the way in which mining is being done. The cycle of high metal commodity prices of the last decade left the industry with high costs. Together with increased environmental and social requirements, a decrease in ore body quality, scarcity of resources such as human capital, water and energy, has resulted in an ever-increasing challenge to make a profit out of new ore bodies but also to maintain the current operations in the longer term competitive. The major challenge is to create value for all stakeholders, exploiting ore bodies that nowadays are not considered economically attractive, which applies to both new ore bodies and existing operations, but in a sustainable way. In order to achieve this objective, it is necessary to approach the mining business differently in five main areas: (1) operational efficiency through better use of installed equipment and skilled labor force; (2) efficient use of energy; using opportunities for alternative energy sources and efficient design; (3) efficient use of water; diminishing losses and use of seawater as an alternative source; (4) minimizing environmental impact by eliminating effluents and controlling dust emission; and (5) a more closer, proactive and collaborative relationship with the communities allowing them to be an active player in the solution to assure a sustainable business in the long term. This presentation will show how Antofagasta Minerals is facing these challenges with a long term strategy that includes all of the above mentioned aspects and that is allowing the company to exploit its mineral properties in an efficient and successful way."

Clay sorbents from the North Bohemian Brown Coal Basin represent important but still some-what neglected accessory raw material. Submitted paper is concerned with relation between mineral structure, sorptive efficiency and reclamation exploitation of these rocks. Characters and localities of main clay sorbents from the North Bohemian Brown Coal Basin are shortly evaluated in an introduction. In next part, methodology of mineralogy survey for these accessory raw materials is stated, it is based on diffract analyse with D 5000 Siemens X-ray diffracto-meter. At the conclusion results are stated of mineralogy analyses from several clay sorbents. The determination of the zeolite and montmorillonite localities was accentuated. The paper presents also possibilities of practical clay sorbents utilization, especially by reclamation works.

"In 2015 in the frames of federal special-purpose program «National system of chemical and biosafety of Russian Federation (2009-2014)» Federal State Budget Educational Institution of Higher Education ""Irkutsk National Research Technical University” (further–INRTU) performed works aimed at disposal of accumulated arsenical residues at industrial site of the former Angarsk arsenical plant (AAP) processing arsenious ores from Svirsk town in Irkutsk region. The plant in 1934-1949 produced arsenic trioxide for the defence industry. Prior to starting the works on disposal of industrial pollution focus the total amount of cinders stored on 13 ha of industrial site of AAP was 156 900 tons with 1% average arsenic content. Close to the cinders there were also remains of industrial buildings and process equipment in the amount of 6 600 m3 that contained 150 tons of arsenic. Additional source of pollution at the industrial site of AAP is contaminated soil amounted to 48 000 tons. Proven reserves of gold and silver in the cinders were 6.1 and 47 g/t respectively. In 2015 the source of arsenious pollution was detoxificated according to mineral matrix technology and stored in a special landfill with separate stocking of gold-containing cinder and other arsenious residues. This technology of waste disposal specifies extraction of valuable metals from cinder in future. The similar case is with Vershino-Darasunsky settlement in Trans-Baikal Territory where the abandoned industrial site of the former arsenic plant is located in the central part of the settlement. The concentration of arsenic and valuable components can be compared to the concentration at AAP. Since 2016 the demand for removal of such industrial pollution sources is legislated due to amendments in Federal Law No. 7-FZ on environmental protection. It results in a real possibility to remove such dangerous industrial residues deposits as the one located in Vershino-Darasunsky settlement. During the flowsheet development for a potential commercial Cu/Ni separation plant at the In-co?s Sudbury operation, extensive laboratory and miniplant studies were carried out. There are two potential feed streams for Cu/Ni separation at the existing operation. It is shown that Cu/Ni separation from the rougher concentrate is relatively simple without need of regrind. However, Cu/Ni separation can be difficult from the bulk concentrate because of the presence of excess flotation reagents in the bulk concentrate slurry and locked particles. Excess flotation reagents created excess froth increasing entrainment. By replacing the slurry water with tap water and with addition of some hydrogen peroxide, entrainment is minimized and good Cu/Ni separation is achieved on the bulk concentrate. Fine regrind is required to increase liberation of the locked particles for ultimately high copper recovery at the minimal nickel content.

Today, sodium cyanide is extensively used for extracting gold, however it is highly toxic to the environment if not managed properly. This paper discusses the key challenges presented to gold operations in efforts to come into alignment with the Russian environmental regulations and suggests solutions to overcome these challenges. It is a fact that the major environmental threat cyanide poses to water sources. Therefore, natural water sources should be well protected from the adverse effect of cyanides used in hydrometallurgical processes. For this, the following site procedures and facilities are practiced: in-site and external water recycling systems, reclaim water treatment if required and tailings ponds with water impermeable screens (tailings ponds with controlled leakage). Cost comparison analysis of cyanide destruction methods was carried out. It was revealed that the aldehyde treatment method developed by Irgiredmet JSC demonstrated the best economics. Cyanide emissions are treated by mass-manufactured packed and membrane devices which allow to keep cyanides at the acceptable limiting values established by environmental regulatory agencies.

"Raw materials are among the main building blocks of a growing economy. Without raw materials, no matter whether it is primary or secondary, production is not possible. Products with high added value require special materials. Recently, worldwide production of some important raw materials mainly comes from a handful of countries, for example: China (Rare Earths Elements (REE)), Russia, South Africa (Platinum Group Elements (PGE)), Democratic Republic of Congo (Cobalt), etc. In the EU as well as in Hungary, the importance of the so called 14 critical raw materials has been recognized. Within the frame of the TÁMOP-4.2.2.A-11/1/KONV-2012-0005 - CriticEL project, the Institute of Raw Materials Preparation and Environmental Processing in cooperation with the Institute of Mineralogy and Geology of the University of Miskolc are working on the exploration of the primary and secondary sources and developing innovative preparation technologies of critical raw materials in Hungary. The research work showed in this article, focused on the recovery of critical materials from LCD TVs and monitors. There are high deviations in different literatures regarding to concentrations of critical elements in displays (e.g.: indium), probably because of the differences in production year, producers and recovery technologies. During the research - described in this study - a well specified sample of quite large amount of displays had been used. The exact place and shape of the ITO (indium-tin oxide) layer were determined by SEM analysis. The applied preparation technology was developed based on the results of our investigations and by technologies found in the literature. The developed process accomplishes two main parts: the mechanical preparation (mainly the liberation of different display layers, removal of liquid crystal) and the acidic dissolution of indium."

"At present, research on the surface chemical properties of uranium minerals is very scanty, which restricts the research progress of uranium ore flotation process research. The research aimed at exploring the surface characteristics of two common uranium minerals and providing basis for flotation process to enrich uranium minerals in ore. This paper selected pitchblende and uraninite as the object of study, which are widely distributed in uranium deposits. We chose out the pure minerals of pitchblende and uraninite from different ores collected from different uranium deposits. By means of Zeta potential test and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) test, a preliminary study on surface characteristics of the pure minerals of pitchblende and uraninite was conducted. And the significance of the change of Zeta potential, the elements composition and valence state on the minerals surface for flotation was discussed. The research shows that, the Zeta potentials of pitchblende and uraninite in pure water are negative mainly when the pH value varies from 2 to 11, which maybe a result of the difference of ionization capacity between two kinds of oxy-compounds on the surface of minerals. On the surface of pitchblende and uraninite, the metal elements are mainly U, Th and Pb. U is mainly in the form of UO2, Th is mainly in the form of ThO2, and Pb is mainly in the form of Pb and PbO. Based on the surface characteristics of pitchblende and uraninite, we can select process and reagents appropriately in uranium ore flotation.INTRODUCTION Globally, the major challenges associated with exploitation of low grade ores are about finding economically feasible processes for reducing the mass of gangue minerals (Filippov et al., 2012). Among the beneficiation technologies of low grade uranium ores with complex minerals assemblage, flotation is the common process which is used to reduce production cost and eliminate the acid-consuming minerals (Li et al., 2016; Liu et al., 2015)."

The worldwide implementation of corrosion protection of low alloyed automotive metal sheets by zinc coating has led to supply shortages of zinc free non-alloyed steel scrap in the foundry industry. In a collaboration project, partly financed by the German government, with partners from the automotive industry, zinc metallurgy, scrap trading, foundry industry, and plant construction, a new acid-based pre-dezincification process has been developed, and a pilot plant with throughput of about 100 t/d has been put into operation at the Clausthal Umwelt-Institut GmbH (CUTEC) together with the Clausthal University of Technology in Germany. During the treatment process, acid from a zinc metallurgical plant will be supplied, which can be recycled to the primary zinc extraction process after raising the zinc concentration to more than 130 g/L zinc. This way, the separation of small amounts of iron by precipitation and the electrolytic zinc winning are outsourced and, as a result, the pre-dezincification process runs waste-free. In Germany, the amount of zinc coated ?new scrap? is approx. 3 million t per year with a zinc content of approximately 60,000 t per year. The possible additional incomes for the dezincified steel scrap are in the order of ?40 to ?50 per ton of scrap, the gained zinc content during the acid dezincification defrays the costs of the process, if the throughput is more than 700 t/d. In comparison to conventional dezincification during the electro arc furnace process followed by upgrading in a rotary kiln (Waelz process), the acid dezincification process running at a maximum of 50°C will cut the energy costs by up to 74% and the CO2 emission by up to 88%. In fact, a demonstration plant is being designed right now and will be installed for processing a part of the zinc coated metal scrap from the Volkswagen AG in Wolfsburg, Germany. Selection of mill size for reducing a feed material of a given size to the desired product size is generally based on the specific energy estimate obtained from Bond test. Over the last thirty years or so, an attempt has been made to develop a more accurate and powerful alternative approach based on the characterization of the particle breakage kinetics and material transport through the mill over a range of operating conditions of interest and correlating the degree of size reduction achieved with the net specific energy input to the mill. Particle breakage kinetics are described in terms of the specific grinding rate and breakage distribution parameters for the individual size fractions. Precise estimates of these parameters and the net energy input to the test ball mill (a laboratory or pilot scale mill) are important for development of desired energy-size correlations. In this context, three tasks are important: (a) preparation of the feed charge, (b) design of batch grinding experiments and (c) computational technique used for estimation of the breakage rate and breakage distribution parameters. This paper highlights several aspects of these three tasks that have been overlooked by researchers working in this field, and describes a more appropriate approach for estimation of model parameters and specific energy input. Several examples are included based on the data available in the literature and those generated in our laboratories to illustrate important points.

The process designs, investments in technology development all have direct relationship with the value of use and making a net positive impact on our ecosystem The value proposition has shifted towards raw materials and is a big differentiator. The availability of good quality raw material is difficult or is available at a premium. The challenge today is to develop green technologies that make effective and efficient usage of low grade raw materials The low grade raw materials as available pose a significant opportunity for human race for delivering value. They offer an easier reach to a value as perceived in end use but the journey is full of challenges. The first challenge is development of technology for maximizing grade recovery as required by the downstream process. The second challenge is to make the technology viable so that it contributes value to end use and the third challenge is to keep the net impact of the process positive The mining and mineral processing fraternity, being at the beginning of this value chain is set to take the first step in this journey for a tryst with ultimate human well being. "Molybdenum is currently the most important by-product of Chile´s copper mining industry. This mineral has gained international relevance over the years, because of its price. At mining deposits in Chile, copper and molybdenum are extracted together and then separated in a concentration process consisting of several flotation steps using sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) as copper depressant. However, there are environmental issues related to the potential emisions of toxic hydrosulfide gas and bad odours, which affects nearby communities and suppose a risk for operators. This problem has led to the need for development of new technologies to eliminate the use of NaHS in the process of selective flotation of Cu and Mo minerals. In this work, results of flotation tests in which lignin derivatives reagents are used to obtain the selective separation of Cu and Mo minerals by flotation are presented. In this technology molybdenite is depressed by the action of lignin derivatives (lignosulfonates), while copper sulfides remain hydrophobic and float. The use of lignin derivatives in the selective flotation of copper molybdenum minerals represents a non-toxic alternative to NaHS.INTRODUCTIONSeparation of copper sulfides from molybdenite is commonly achieved through a two-stage flotation process. In the first stage the collective flotation of copper sulfides and molybdenite is promoted to generate a collective concentrate which is then treated in a second stage with sodium hydrosulfide (2.5-3.0 kg/t NaSH) to depress copper sulfides flotation without affecting the flotation of molybdenite. As a result a copper concentrate with 30-35% Cu, and a molybdenum concentrate with 50-52% Mo are generated. Although this process is widely used at industrial level, environmental issues related to the risk of H2S generation and bad odors have always been a concern. Thus there is a need in the industry for a more environmentally friendly process to separate copper sulfides and molybdenite."

Incomplete liberation of mineral particles is one of the key factors limiting the performance of industrial flotation circuits. This work aims to quantify the relationship between different breakage modes and how these affect mineral liberation properties. A copper porphyry (bornite) ore sample was subjected to breakage using a piston-die compression unit and an impact mill. The particles produced as a result of each mode of breakage were then characterised using Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA) to quantify the mineralogical and liberation properties of the progeny particles. The impact mill was found to produce bornite that was finer grained relative to the host particles. In con-trast, bornite discharged from the piston-die unit closely followed the size distribution of the host particles and was retained to a greater extent in the larger/intermediate size fractions. The results provide insight into what breakage methods are optimal for the purposes of downstream separation.

At the rougher flotation circuit of the Miduk copper concentration plant (Kerman, Iran) five column cells (CISA) with the diameter of 4m and height of 12m using static mixer type (MicrocelTM) spargers have been installed. Based on the initial design, columns should accept a feed rate of 625 t/h with 80% passing size of 90 µm and solids concentration of 28% and produce 88% of the plant concentrate (i.e., 22 t/h) containing 32% copper. Due to mechanical and processing problems this objective was never realized and theses columns were remained out of operation from the commissioning time (2005). A new attempt with the aim of returning these cells into operation started in 2013. The results of an extensive study indicated that spargers plugging due to the entrance of small amount (2 kg) of coarse particles (up to 2.5 cm) because of usual problems at the plant environment was the main reason of columns non functionality. With a change in the recycle pump inlet design to the column, which prevented the entrance of coarse particles to the spargers, the operation of the column significantly improved. It was found that in order to have a stable operation of the columns at the rougher stage the feed rate for each column should be reduced from 125 (design) to 70 t/h. The air superficial rate had to be also reduced from 1.9 (design) to 0.6 cm/s. A period of 10 days of continuous operation showed that the carrying capacity was 0.23 (g/min/cm2) which was significantly lower that of the design value (i.e., 0.58). The gas hold up was found to be lower than 10% beyond which columns started to move to the turbulent state indicated by "boiling" froth. The average life time of spargers was determined to be 20 days which considered to be very short. The average recovery and concentrate grade of these columns were found to be 68% and 32%, respectively.
