Many activity measurements of components in liquid oxides have been reported in the field of slag chemistry. However, very little is known about the thermodynamic behavior of compo- nents in oxide solid solutions. Heatings, fires and explosions in New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland coal mines since 1972, are reviewed. Geological and mine settings are outlined. Where available, gas analysis and critical decisions are discussed. This paper updates work by NSW Department of Mineral Resources (1995) and the Queensland Department of Mines and Energy in a report on fires and explosion in Queensland coal mines (Richardson and Ham, 1996). Incident data has important applications in terms of evidence-based risk assessment and identifying key issues to be integrated into competency based training programs. Predictive indicators are reviewed in terms of coal parameters in seams where the incidents occurred.

The question of effective energy utilisation in grinding mills is not new. There are several conflicting arguments about tumbling mills, whether the efficiency is around 1 per cent or maybe 10 per cent, or even much lower. The energy not used is assumed to be lost as heating of the pulp, the grinding mill body, the charge, generation of shock waves and vibrations, etc. Stirred media mills on the other hand are generally considered to have better energy utilisation, but their energy efficiency is still not that clear. To shed some light on this a pilot-scale, wet stirred media mill was investigated over a range of operating conditions. The wet stirred media mill is a Drais PMH 5 TEX pearl mill fitted with an electric motor at 11 kW. It has been investigated over a range of operating conditions to try to balance the dissemination of the input energy in forms of the net grinding energy, mechanical energy losses, and the heating transferred to the pulp, the mill, the charge, and the cooling water. It is found that approximately 20–40 per cent of the input energy accounts for the grinding process. Also, that the difference between gross and net input electrical energy is mainly disseminated as heating of the pulp and cooling water. Mechanical energy losses appear to be much smaller than the heating effects. The use of a dispersant seems to mainly influence the heating effect.

The Eneabba deposit, located 280 km north of Perth, Western Australia, and 30 km inland (Fig. 1) is one of the most recently developed deposits of mineral sands in the world. The area has been in production since 1974, while the Associated Minerals Consolidated Limited (AMA) operation commenced production in 1976. Total ore reserves of close to 400 million tonnes contain about 40 million tonnes of heavy minerals (proved and probable).

The hydraulic backfilling of mine tailings has proven very successful at the Homestake Mine in Lead, South Dakota. It allows greater versatility, selectivity and safety in mining. It has also minimized surface subsidence and underground rock movement. The tight filling also eliminates underground fires. This paper explains the hydraulic backfill method used and the problems encountered by so doing.

U-Th isotope studies of recent volcanic rocks may be used to evaluate the depths and rates of melt generation beneath mid- ocean ridges and ocean islands. Island arc rocks exhibit a similar range in Th isotopes to that seen in both MORB and OIB, but while those with high (230Th/232Th) tend to have excess 238U, many of those with low (230Th/232Th) are in isotope equilibrium. The excess 238U is attributed to the preferential mobilisation of U in hydrous fluids from the subducted slab within the last 100,000 years, whereas the low Th isotope ratios in the higher-K arcs are primarily due to the introduction of subducted sediment. Preliminary results from mineral separates from lavas on Soufriere on the island of St. Vincent indicate that some of the minerals crystallised up to 50,000 years prior to eruption.

The granulation and bed-permeability of sinter raw materials depend on interactions between the properties of various iron ores and water. The properties of individual iron ores are controlled by their particle size distribu- tion and surface characteristics, which can be described by representative particle size and wettability, respectively. Added water may be absorbed, affect granulation or lower bed permeability. These effects were experimentally studied as a function of properties of the iron ores. A mathematical model was developed in order to calculate the granulated particle size and permeability using the known blend of sinter raw materials. The calculated results were in good agreement with the observed values.

The scarcity of truck tyres combined with decreases in the availability of labour, increases in fuel costs and a buoyant international economy driving project budget blowouts, have all combined to change the paradigm behind mining equipment selections. The escalation of commodity prices has occurred in parallel with an increasing maturity in continuous mining machinery, mobile in-pit crushing systems and very large-scale conveyor belt systems. This paper will consider the merits of operating continuous materials handling systems, mobile in-pit crushing systems, relocatable crushing systems, relocatable conveyor systems and automated waste handling systems in place of the more conventional approach of truck haulage.

In 2012, in response to an increasing potential unfunded liability, the Western Australian Government passed the Mining Rehabilitation Fund Act 2012. The intent of this Act was to introduce an annual levy on tenements covered under the Mining Act 1978 based on the area of disturbed land. The fund generated from these levies could then be used to rehabilitate mining sites where all other options to ensure rehabilitation had been exhausted. The fund could also be used to rehabilitate abandoned sites or features which, in Western Australia, number over 10 000.The Mining Rehabilitation Fund (MRF) was implemented on 1 July 2013 for an initial voluntary year. It becomes compulsory on 1 July 2014. By the end of March 2014, nine months into the voluntary period, over $6.5 million had been paid into the fund. The incentive for tenement holders to voluntarily enter the fund was the opportunity to have unconditional performance bonds held against their tenements retired. While there will be circumstances where bonds will continue to be applied, it is the State Government’s intention to retire most of the bonds.The MRF has received mostly accolades from industry and companies that have entered. Most have found the system easy to use. The MRF was also cited as a reason for Western Australia’s improved position in the Fraser Institute’s annual survey of mining jurisdictions. Work is now starting on processes to select priority abandoned mines for rehabilitation.This paper explains the background to the MRF and its development, and reviews its implementation during the first, voluntary, year. It also discusses how the fund will be managed into the future and what this will mean for both abandoned mine features across Western Australia and any future abandoned mine sites.CITATION:Leybourne, M L, 2014. This paper describes the risk management strategies adopted to control unstable slopes in the east open pit of the Daye iron ore mine. Extensive experience has been developed over the last 35 years in the management of pit wall instability resulting in the successful excavation and reinforcement of pit slopes over 350 m in height.

Three separate and unconfined aquifers occur in the Hilton area, named relative to position in relation to ore horizons: Footwall Aquifer in the east; Ore-Zone Aquifer within the ore-bearing Urquhart Shales; and the Hangingwall Aquifer in the west.It is the on-going strategy it Hilton to drain the Ore-Zone Aquifer which occupies structurally- and sulphide-controlled leached zones in the steeply west dipping strata. The aquifer affects considerable ore reserves to 480 m below the surface. Dewatering began in 1976, and is essentially completed to 4 level (240 m below surface). Dewatering efforts are now based on 8 level (480 m below surface).

One of the most significant technical and practical challenges facing the tunnel construction team on the Legacy Way road tunnel project in Brisbane, Australia was how to erect the prestressed precast concrete slabs to form the smoke duct in the tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnels.An essential part of the tunnel ventilation system, the smoke duct extends the full length of the 4.6 km-long twin two-lane tunnels. The vast majority of the tunnels (approximately 4.3 km) were constructed using two 12.4 m diameter double-shield TBMs. The refurbished Herrenknecht machines broke several world records on the way to completing the tunnel excavation works in just over nine months. With the excavation complete the focus turned to solving the complex civil tunnel fit-out challenges. A key component of the civil fit-out of the tunnels was constructing the smoke duct in the TBM tunnels, which was designed as a precast solution.The slabs, which each measure 8.62 m long × 2.0 m wide × 200 mm thick and weigh close to 9?t, need to be erected above cast in situ corbels whilst other tunnel finishing works continue. The space-proofing clearance offered by the design to the support corbels below and the precast segmental lining above was in the order of only 100 mm.This paper tells the story of how the Transcity Joint Venture (JV) tunnel fit-out team comprising some of Europe and Australia’s leading tunnel construction specialists drew upon the global strengths of the existing JV member companies and the global reach of leading TBM manufacturer Herrenknecht to develop an innovative system in solving this challenging problem. Many young mining engineers do not consider consulting as a possible job, believing that many years of working on-site is required to achieve practical experience, develop expertise and acquire industry contacts. However, mining consultancies employ engineers with varying levels of experience, including part-time university students, graduates and engineers who are relatively new to the industry. This paper outlines the role of a young engineer in a large mining consultancy and the benefits to both the consultancy and the client of having a mix of consultants with a diverse range of experience. From the authorÆs perspective, the work experience, lifestyle and rewards of mine consulting are compared to site based work, including a discussion on whether consulting is able to offer the professional development that a young engineer needs.

There are many important physical phenomena in mine ventilation which involve transient mass and heat transfer processes. These processes have been modeled using differential equations often solved with close form solution. Within the last two decades, many numerical schemes have been devised to solve these mass-transfer problems. Much of this effort has focused on variants of the finite element and finite difference methods. In this paper, the solution of mass transfer models in mine ventilation by finite difference technique is discussed. Specifically, the computational effort and the accuracy of the solution are presented.

Central Andean (22¦S to 34¦S latitude) Miocene giant ore deposits share common features that reveal their origin. Tectonic and magmatic features include a relation to a shallow subduction zone, an association with the waning or initiation of a magmatic episode, emplacement at the time of uplift associated with crustal thickening and formation at times of major magmatic changes along the Andean margin. Rare Earth Element (REE) signatures in magmas erupted near the time of mineralisation indicate a progressive change from equilibration at depth with a hydrous, intermediate-pressure amphibole-bearing mineral residue to equilibration with an anhydrous high-pressure garnet-bearing assemblage. These features point to a common history. First, a relatively shallow subduction zone leads to hydration of a cool mantle wedge providing a source of fluids which builds up over at least several million years. Arc magmas formed at this time equilibrate with a hornblende-bearing residual mineralogy. Second, a compressive tectonic regime leads to crustal shortening and thickening that facilitates entrapment of arc magmas in the crust. Eventually, the magma-weakened crust yields to horizontal compression causing rapid crustal thickening. Fluids required for mineralisation are liberated as amphibole-bearing assemblages break down to garnet-bearing ones and over pressured fluids are released from plutons. Mineralisation subsequently ceases in the region unless continued dehydration of the slab and mechanical thinning of the continental lithosphere causes the previous conditions to repeat. The type of mineral deposit generated depends on the pre-existing continental lithosphere and the distance from the trench.

Currently, social impact assessment (SIA) is used to determine social impacts across the life-of-mine (LOM) to closure. This paper draws on recently completed SIA reports from the Martha gold mine in Waihi and qualitative interviews in the community that explored post-closure options, to review the challenges mining companies face when engaging with iwi4 through the SIA process and what that may mean for closure planning. The Maori of New Zealand consistently lobby to have a distinct voice in resource management issues. This is in line with the evolution of indigenous participation in SIA globally and with New Zealand policies, not least of which, the Treaty of Waitangi (the founding document of New Zealand) makes provision for Maori self-determination with regard to natural resources. Land use for mining has been a source of conflict for Maori and mining can have profound cultural and social impacts on the Maori community, yet despite Treaty intentions their representation in SIA has been comparatively limited. With this in mind, the Waitangi Tribunal has released the Ko Aotearoa Tenei (Wai 262) report, which recommends far reaching reforms to laws and policies affecting Maori culture and identity including natural resource management. This landmark report seeks to move the Maori-Government relationship beyond grievance to partnership. Given suggested policy changes in Wai 262 and the risks of poorly conceived closure planning, it is timely to review where Maori currently fit into the SIA process. The findings of this research suggest that improvements to the outcomes of this process will require companies to act beyond compliance. Chemical and isotopic analyses of fumarole gases from Galeras Volcano, Colombia provide significant insights into the origin of volatile components in the magma.. Water comprises a mixture of magmatic (rock-equilibrated at high temperature) and meteoric, with the relative proportions varying through time. Carbon isotopes are most consistent with a mantle source, although other contributions to the system cannot be ruled out. Nitrogen most likely originated from organic matter in subducted oceanic sediments. All of these "primary" components have been modified somewhat by interaction or exchange with other reservoirs during ascent to the surface. In addition to information on the origin of the gases, these data show significant temporal variations precursory to eruptive events. Chemical ratios change and water becomes more meteoric in character prior to eruptions.

The Western Mining Corporation mining lease on the Bendigo Goldfield measures 5krri x 18km with more than 20 anticlinal folds parallelling th long north-south boundaries. Numerous closely spaced shafts and extensive underground workings on the reef lines along the folds flooded with groundwater following the progressive abandonment of the field. Preliminary water sampling and assessment demonstrated that a major dewatering programme and acceptable disposal methods were necessary to dewater interconnected old workings in areas of interest prior to any underground work taking place. A field wide geohydolic investigation was undertaken to establish geohydraulic parameters, groundwater recharge rates and water qualities. Data from the field investigation together with estimates of the volume geometry of the submerged workings as obtained from old mine plans, production history, and limited pump testing results were used with an appropriate analytical model to obtain estimates of water discharge rates required to reach various dewatering targets. Water disposal options were limited by relatively high salinities, arsenic levels, contained hydrogen sulphide, and the mine locations within the urban areas surrounding Bendigo. Direct disposal to the surface drainage system could not be considered, treatment to acceptable discharge standards was not economically feasible, and it was necessary to adopt a strategy of collection, containment, and evaporation.

BechtelÆs Mining and Metals projects across the globe are executed in remote arid and semi-arid countries where providing even basic water supplies impose considerable challenges. Opportunities for water conservation measures using a Six Sigma initiative were proactively pursued to address the potential business impacts of limited availability of water resources. The initiative investigated areas driving water-optimisation during concrete operations and camp management. This paper details the water conservation evaluation of alternatives and cost/benefit analysis based on current and predicted water usage for development projects. Optimisation of water consumption through institutionalising more prescriptive standards for camp design and defining water conservation requirements have resulted in a new standard specification. Based on our projected mining project workload across the globe, it is estimated that for the period 2012 - 2015, a potential 5.5 M m3 water savings resulting in US$11 M could be realised for construction camps and savings of 4 M m3 of peripheral concrete process water resulting in potential cost savings of US$8 M could be achieved as a result of these revised standards.CITATION:Haase, T, Hannah, B, Ganapathi, G, Martin, L, Madore, C, Labarca, F and Uriarte, M, 2013.
