A cross-discipline approach combining geology, metallurgy and mine planning, geometallurgy is seen as the next logical advance in improving the design and operation of mining businesses. This rapidly evolving field is focused on realising the value that has often been lost in the chasms between the aforementioned technical silos. When successful, the geometallurgical approach promises the ability to tailor mining and mineral processing development and operational options more closely to the characteristics of the resource with resulting lower costs (both capital and operating), improved recoveries and fewer project failures.As with any technological (or managerial) change, there will be side effects from the success of the geometallurgical approach that will impact areas beyond obvious linkages between geology and processing. Some of these effects have the potential to be beneficial to the resource industry and society in general. Beyond the basic geometallurgical promise of closer alignment between processing design/strategy and the multivariate 3D spatial characteristics of the mineralisation, this paper discusses the broader implications and ramifications of the emergent geometallurgical approach: enhancing exploration and discovery; improving project development success; achieving sustainability in an industry working with non-renewable resources; in a world of increasingly hard won license to operate, improving the management of potentially harmful by-products and waste materials (with knock on effects for proactive management of closure issues); smarter approaches to energy management and thus optimisation of projects with respect to carbon footprint; and potential to re-value assets and thus realise a strategic advantage in the area of acquisitions, divestments, mergers and take overs. The authors strongly believe that companies that actively engage with the above issues (and ensure that technical efforts in the area of geometallurgy are not isolated from the larger value chain activities of the firm) will be able to exploit the opportunities that consequentially arise. These early adopters will gain first mover advantages. Firms taking the broad view of geometallurgy will have an opportunity to maximise stakeholder value and win greater success than their less insightful competitors.

The theory of sampling (TOS), and therefore representative sampling, is based on three fundamental principles: sample correctness, which handles the search for non-bias; segregation, the effects of which must be eliminated or minimised; and variance control to help achieve the desired reproducibility. After briefly reviewing these very few, albeit essential first principles of Gy’s TOS, the state-of-the-art in TOS is examined through the prism of these principles and the prospects for the future are explored, with suggestions for further research where relevant. Regarding segregation, which is currently the focus of much research, new orientations are proposed. For correctness, which takes on a major importance when it comes to sampling devices, some new, important principles that have been put forth by recent research, are described in details.CITATION:François-Bongarçon, D, 2014. Explosive properties are typically summarised on manufacturers’ technical data sheets. The values most commonly referred to are the density of the explosive, the energy it is expected to release and its velocity of detonation (VOD). This information is provided so that blasting engineers can make a considered selection of the most appropriate product for a particular blasting application. As an example, a lower VOD and energy product is better suited to blasting in soft, weathered material. In contrast, blasting hard, competent material generally requires a higher energy product which is usually characterised by higher VOD and energy.A review of the technical information supplied by manufacturers shows a wide range of methods of reporting both VOD and energy. A meaningful comparison between products from different suppliers is almost impossible to achieve based on these data. For a similar product, one supplier may have a VOD range of 2800–5800 m/s and a relative bulk strength of 1.34 while a corresponding product from another supplier is quoted with a VOD range of 3100–6300 m/s and a relative bulk strength of 192. In the end, the user has to rely on the level of confidence available from their experience using a certain type of explosive in the type of rock to be blasted at that mine.This paper reviews some of the technical and supporting information that is freely available in the literature and attempts to provide some clarity as to what the numbers that are reported actually mean for the end user. The principal source of funding the working capital requirements of gold miners has traditionally been equity. However in the 1980s, with a substantial increase in activity in the exploration for, and the production of, gold the traditional sources of equity finance became no longer sufficient to meet demand. With the often high cost of raising equity, the need for developing alternative financing structures became critical, especially since the stockmarket crash of 1987 which at least until recently, adversely affected the amount of equity capital available for investment in mining.

The focus in the iron ore industry has shifted from increasing production volumes with less regard for cost, to efficient production of quality tonnes. BHP Billiton iron ore geoscience and exploration has embedded infrared spectroscopic sensing of drill hole samples to help meet this challenge.Infrared spectroscopy is delivering mineral predictions that are used for (automated) geology logging and modelling. The spectra are processed together with other available data sets to predict geometallurgical and geotechnical variables that include lump per cent and uniaxial compressive strength.Trials are ongoing to test the benefit of infrared spectroscopy during mining, including the analysis of grade control samples and remote sensing of mine faces. Results show great benefits in the fields of short-term geology modelling, better understanding of material (handling) properties, identification of geotechnical risk areas and high resolution ore-waste delineation.These trials are bringing BHP Billiton iron ore closer to its ultimate goal of having infrared spectroscopic data collected across the mining value chain. Once such data are available everywhere, regression models can be trained at one point (eg iron grade model trained on exploration samples) and be applied elsewhere (eg iron grade predicted on mine faces). Such predictive analytics will enable not only high precision mining, but also provide maximum time to tailor plant design to the ore in the ground, based on learnings from ores processed in other plants. Using a scientific-principled definition of global socio-ecological sustainability can be a useful basis for planning precious and base metal mining projects. The mining industry faces key challenges of; viability of the minerals industry; the control, use and management of land; national and local socio-economic development; environmental management; materials stewardship; and access to information. Using a framework for strategic sustainable development to assess the current reality of mine project development has resulted in identifying areas of strength and opportunities for improvement between current best practices and a desired vision of sustainability constrained by science based principles. These gaps indicate opportunities to strengthen current strategies, tools, and actions with a deeper understanding of socio-ecologic systems and a first-order, principled definition of sustainability, enabling success in moving towards achieving a sustainable society, ie sustainability. Evaluation of mine project development and their impacts on ecological and social systems using a systems perspective which recognises the underlying principles of operation, delays, feedback loops and response to change highlight specific opportunities to create value for social, economic and ecologic systems. Envisioning this future for mining projects within a sustainable society can be done by evaluating their development and operations guided by the sustainability principles. Performance indicators play a key role in measuring progress towards achieving sustainability goals yet it is necessary to consider whether indicators capture the whole systems perspective. Connected to this broader view, indicators can contribute much value to the mining industryÆs sustainability journey. This paper examines how current processes for mining projects can be developed using a whole systems perspective and measured using holistically designed performance indicators.

Data is the most valuable commodity in the information age. The use of data enables productivity, opportunity, and safety in various sectors and industries. In the late 1950s, Alan Turing coined the term artificial intelligence (AI) to describe the ability of computing machines to think and behave like humans through simplified reasoning and logic (Turing, 1950). This concept of mimicking human behaviour is the building block of machine learning algorithms used in most AI software. The ‘learning’ aspect in machine learning requires data, that is, information on the environment or the objective, to be modelled or predicted using AI. An AI-enabled system aims to predict the unknown faster and intuitively. Intuition in software algorithms can be described as probabilistic, learned through the data that the AI system is trained on; indeed, the AI software cannot predict the future, but it can provide the likelihood of an event/action occurring, thereby enabling decisions or responses to prevent it or take action. Just as various industries have adopted AI as the tool of choice to seek new opportunities (examples: medical research, self-driving cars, financial modelling), the mining industry, too, has been receptive to embracing AI for problem-solving and maximising the value of its business.

"The Australian mining industries approach to life-of-mine planning has improved considerably in recent decades. It now needs to be matched by, and embedded in, mining governance systems that utilise a comprehensive whole-of-mine-life approach within a jurisdictional, industry and regional regime rather than just focusing on specific impacts in isolation. The need for a more comprehensive approach is supported by the many mining legacies, from historic, recent and some operating mine sites around Australia. There are sites that are leaving enduring environmental, community and public health impacts that are yet to be accurately assessed. While a number of these sites in Australia are estimated to be more than 50 000, this is probably an underestimation, with a lack of data and different state-based approaches complicating attempts to quantify mining legacies as a national issue. Qualitative assessments about the extent and nature of mining legacy impacts on nature and communities across Australia are also required if we are to understand and avoid ongoing and future mining legacies.This paper commences with an exploration of mining legacies as an umbrella term for previously mined, abandoned, orphan, derelict or neglected sites. This is followed by a discussion of the current status of mining legacies as an Australia-wide issue, contrasting the Australian response with overseas examples. Common themes from past workshops are explored recognising that mining legacies are a growing public policy issue and identifying key ingredients for a successful response. Supporting this, and based on national data which re-enforces the need for action, is the changing scale and intensity of mining in Australia that, while lowering costs for mine operators, increases the liability that may eventually fall to the state if mine sites are not rehabilitated effectively. Though a national issue, mining is a state and territory responsibility, so the current approach to mining legacies is then examined state-by-state. Given the widespread application and recent changes to bonds and levies in Western Australia (WA) and the Northern Territory (NT) the merits of both are examined with reference to specific case studies. Despite the current division of responsibility and diversity of approaches, however, mining legacies remain a significant and growing problem with a recognised need and repeated call for cooperation and coordination at a national and international level. Australian coals tend to be young in geological age and high in ash by world standards; preparation of the coal before marketing is almost universal. On the basis of float and sink data from 39 locations in the Eastern Australian coalfields, the coals are placed in four categories representing increasing difliculty in their washability characteristics. These seem to be related neither to the geological age nor the geographical position of the deposit and Hunter Valley coals, for example, span all categories. The influence of crushing on the washability of Australian coals is briefly considered and from limited data it is concluded to be appreciably smaller than for British or North American coals. A strategy for the float and sink analysis of Australian coals is proposed and the influence of washability characteristics on current trends in the selection of separating processes for coking and steaming products is discussed.

Since the publications of Gy’s initial work, many authors have discussed the approaches to estimate the variance of the fundamental sampling error (FSE). Experimental tests suggested by Pitard and François-Bongarçon determine the sampling parameters K and a to calibrate Gy’s formula. The heterogeneity test and the sample tree method are well known and broadly used for many commodities. However, prior to the analysis, the collection of a representative sample is an intriguingly difficult task. The composite for the heterogeneity tests often consists of run-?of-?mine material or processed ore on a conveyor belt. In most cases the final sample does not have enough mass, mixes different geological units, represents a rare blend and does not characterise the deposit. In order to obtain a reliable composite for trace elements and low-grade ores, sampling practitioners suggest at least half a ton of material.To prevent the common representative pitfalls in the FSE, this case study focuses on a single gold-?bearing geological unit collected in situ. With this unit being structured by the mine geologists, but with the interaction between engineers and chemists, it was possible to validate the reconciliation suggested by Pitard (2015). The heterogeneity test and the sample tree method were performed using 500 kg of a smoky quartz from a single geological domain and the results were compared to Gy’s formula. The logging practice by the geologists was modified, emphasising the definition of the size of the gold nugget or its cluster, number of grains and association. Finally, a mineralogical study was conducted on the geological unit to define the liberation factor. Since the introduction of water cooled test rings the operation of cupelling retort bullion has not alone been sImplified, but has also been the means of concentrating the bullion for the fining test in a much shorter time.The first water cooled test ring which I used was rectangular in shape, inside dimensions 5 ft. 3 in. x 2 ft. IQ in., and made of i in. mild steel plates, with a water space of 9i in. x 3t in. However, it was found that as soon as the filling commenced to wear and the litharge came in contact with the jacket, the plate was gradually affected on the lines of the wash, caused by the blast. After a while the inside steel plate went beyond the factor of safety, and was then substituted on the sides and the front of the test ring by a tin copper plate, which has stood now for the last five years without showing the least signs of wear or leakage.The test remains in use as long as the bottom is regarded as safe, and toward the end of the life of the test the litharge is allowed to work against the copper plate.

GENERALThe lode, for purposes of description, may be said to be divided into two portions which are usually referred to as the Southern and Northern Orebodies.The southern ore-body is the larger and in places attains a width of 200 feet. The northern ore-body is, generally speaking, comparatively narrow. These ore-bodies have a northerly pitch of approximately 45' and a westerly dip of 60. In the southern ore-body a grid of ore chutes is provided at 31 ft. 8 in. (5 square set) intervals and this necessitates an elaborate arrangement of cross-cuts, portion of which have to be driven through the foot-wall. Crushed country rock adjacent to the foot-wall makes it necessary for drives to be placed at least 60 feet from the lode.In the northern ore-body the ore chutes are arranged along a longitudinal drive, thus making a much simpler layout. These layouts were described in detail by A. R. West (Proceedings A.I.M.M. No. 117). In opening up a new level from the shaft plat, a heading is extended in a westerly direction until a point approximately 60 feet from the footwall of the lode is reached.At this point the direction of the cross-cut is altered to a bearing approximately 90 to the general strike of the ore-body, and the cross-cut continued until the hanging-wall is intersected. From the information obtained together with that from diamond drilling, the outline of the ore-body is plotted as closely as possible, and this serves as a basis for the layout of the level. Drives south and north from the main cross-cut are made in order to determine the southern and northern extremity of the southern ore-body. Currently, underground mining of deeper massive deposits with lower grades, harder rock conditions in high strength environments, entails difficulties in caving, fragmentation and seismicity of the orebody.So far, the use of preconditioning (PC) with hydraulic fracturing (HF) has shown positive results in terms of seismic response and caving performance, while PC combined with explosives aims to weaken the rock mass, causing an additional effect on fragmentation.In particular, mines commonly referred to as ‘supercaves’, operated by caving methods, have the need to integrate mine to plant processes, where rock fragmentation appears as a key tool. In fact, it implies making mining and comminution processes more efficient to the plant and for mines, it justifies the search of innovative solutions in drilling and blasting techniques to precondition the rock mass. The following paper aims to show the feasibility of numerical blast modelling to weaken the rock mass using explosives, mainly through sensitivity analysis applied to designs to minimise bias and uncertainty in the results. It is shown how the presence of structures, their geometry and in situ stresses influence or interfere with the PC method being used.From the work, it is concluded that better knowledge on the application of explosives weakening allows specialists to strengthen numerical models associated with every design and therefore previously validate their applicability, helping to understand complex phenomena such as the propagation of mechanical waves in non-elastic heterogeneous media. Detailed pit and outcrop mapping of sedimentary rocks and their alteration is providing insights into fluvial processes that operated during deposition of the world-class Yandi channel iron deposit. Five prominent rock units are traceable along the strike of the Yandi deposit and permit correlation of open pits and mesas. These units are the Eastern Clay Horizon (ECH), granule-pebble conglomerate (GPC), Main Ore Zone (MOZ), Basal Denatured Zone (BDZ), and Basal Conglomerate (BCONG). The upper part of the deposit is characterised by a transition from spheroidal grains with well-defined rims and nuclei to larger, subangular grains with poorly developed rims. The distribution of rock types and sedimentary features such as lateral accretion surfaces, channel scours and fills, graded bedding, cross-bedding, reworked horizons, and slumped strata are common at Yandi and indicate deposition in a fluvial system. Bedding is well preserved despite modification of original grain shapes and textures and introduction of secondary silica and alumina in the upper part of the deposit. The high lithic and clay content of the GPC and ECH possibly reflect changes in source area or a hiatus in deposition of the Marillana Pisolite. The MOZ and the BDZ may be the same depositional unit with the latter recording alteration by groundwater and destruction of primary textures and other sedimentary features. The BCONG is a channel lag deposit reworked during deposition of the MOZ. This interpretation is supported by the dominance of basement-derived lithic clasts, the presence of BCONG clasts, the variable thickness of the unit along strike and the presence of BCONG clasts in the BDZ.

Mineragraphy is a coined term to signify the field of microscopic investigation of ore minerals. The term is not euphonius and is sometimes regarded as superfluous because the subject is no more than an enlargement of the scope of petrology. In the past the practical field of petrology has been largely limited by the instruments which were designed for the study of rocks and' the microscopical properties of the transparent minerals. The addition of mineragraphy has been brought about by the use of the reflecting microscope and a totally different technique.The use of the petrological microscope, as it has been employed in the training oi geologists and mining engineers for nearly half a century, has been justified many times, not only in its application to general geological problems, but also in the more restricted field of the exploration and examination of ore deposits. It provides information of the gangue minerals and rocks associated with an ore body which is of great value in some mining fields. In cases where ore deposits occur selectively in certain favourable types of rock, the recognition and delineation of these rock types is a useful guide in prospecting. The Boulder Belt at Kalgoorlie forms one of the most striking examples in Australia where important significance is attached to different rock types, and the petrological microscope is essential to their elucidation.

Current trends into mining iron ore have seen an increase in the exploitation of problematic orebodies that would typically be disregarded. These bulk materials cause problems within all facets of the material handling stream, from remains left in train wagons to transfer chute blockages, which can cause costly downtime to mining operations (Roberts, 1998). These problematic bulk materials are referred to as wet and sticky material (WSM) due to the adhesive and cohesive nature they possess. Their characteristics can be computationally expensive to model. With the development of discrete element modelling (DEM), in conjunction with advancement in computational power over the past decade, it is now more feasible to model WSMs into the DEM technique.This research will couple two different contact models that can represent the characteristics of a WSM. These models include the Simplified Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (SJKR) and the Easo liquid bridging contact models. The SJKR contact model is an expanded form of the classic Hertz model. This model includes the tensile forces that are in the contact zone between two bodies when they are separated, which the Hertz model failed to capture (Johnson, Kendall and Roberts, 1971). The Easo liquid bridging contact model accounts for the capillary effects and surface tension that will form between two bodies, such as that of a WSM (Soulié et al, 2006). Both of these models were coupled to give the best representation of a WSM, which was simulated using MoleculeX™ (Chen and Williams, 2017) as the software platform.Additionally, this research also investigated the adhesion of problematic iron ore samples onto impact plates under dynamic conditions. An experimental set-up consisting of an apron feeder and inclined impact plate was utilised, to gain an understanding of the way the material builds-up and the possible modes of failure that could be experienced. This was undertaken for different wall liner materials, wall liner angles and moisture contents of the iron ore samples. From this, a series of DEM calibration simulations were conducted on the experimental set-up and particle size distributions (PSD) of the iron ore samples. In this paper it is argued that we are entering a new mining era, based on considerably more challenging orebodies as we rapidly expand minerals production by exploiting previously uneconomic deposits. Rapidly increasing production costs cannot be sustained by continually increasing commodity prices, as illustrated by the recent downturn in the industry.Driven by reduction in grade, requiring the processing of 50 to 100 per cent more ore to recover the same amount of metal, often accompanied by finer grain structure - necessitating a finer product size and more challenging recovery - the productivity of the mining industry is dropping in real terms. The author suggests that tweaking current technologies and relying on economies of scale will not turn the industry around, but rather a switch to considerably more efficient processing is required.It is imperative to utilise the properties of the orebody, especially in terms of variability, in revolutionising our processing techniques. Our new mantra may be æselective mass mining with flexible processingÆ. This paper explores how this may be implemented using current technology and equipment in order to change the cost profile of the new mining industry. Orebody knowledge, based on the underlying process drivers, rather than proxies, is required. These properties and their variability will need to be propagated into the orebody through utilising the geological data rather than smoothing block averages, which destroys information on variability.Novel flexible circuit designs are presented that can respond to a wide variability in ore properties and throughput requirements in order to slash processing costs and energy utilisation, while enhancing overall recovery.
