Most people are familiar with Euclidean dimensions: zero for a point; one for a line; two for a plane; and three for a volume. Howeverbobjects are not actually Euclidean, but lie somewhere between Euclidean æend-membersÆ with a non-integer fractal (or æfractionalÆ) dimension. The fractal dimension D is a measure of the relative importance of large versus small. Consider the trace of a coastline on a map. It has a fractal dimension (1 =D =2) somewhere between a line (dimension = 1) and a plane (dimension = 2). The more tortuous the coastline, the higher the fractal dimension, and the closer it becomes towards a plane. The concepts of fractals and spatial geometry can be applied to a wide range of geologicaVmining problems as well as than those dealing with space. One commonly quoted fractal relation is the log-log relationship of ore-grade and tonnage. Until recently, we have never been able to define or measure spatial-geometry, but new developments in mathematics have provided a means by which to quantity and apply it to our problems.

The Kalgoorlie Golden Mile is proposed as an Archaean volcanogenic-type deposit, modified and redistributed along later-developed structures. Rich pyritctelluride and Green Leader gold mineralization is associated with the end phase of basic volcanism and, in a general sense, is confined to a broad interface zone between the products of marine basic volcanism and later acid volcanism. There is virtualIy no ore associated with the main body of acid volcanics.Green Leader is the local name of a type of ore that occurs at some igneous rock contacts in association with graphitic sediments and layered acidic tuffs. It is characteristicalIy green, of various shades, and commonly yields very high gold assays, the reasons for which are not apparent in hand specimen.Carbonates, carbonaceous shales, tuffites, rich gold ores, and acid and intermediate dykes, alI indicating a common heritage, are features common to the main ore hosts, viz. the Paringa Basalt (Calc Schist) and theGolden Mile Dolerite ("Quartz Dolerite Greenstone").Several probably related fracture systems have reconstituted most, but not all, of the original deposits into a large number of steep tabular lodes.Includes two sets of discussions and comments from later Proceedings volumes.

The increasing depth, mechanisation and distance of working areas from surface connections places an ever greater contaminant burden on ventilation airflows. Some British Coal mines are already experiencing significant problems in providing adequate climatic conditions in the working areas and have had to introduce air conditioning. Previous work has shown that in mines of low to moderate virgin strata temperature the application of controlled district recirculation could serve to improve climatic conditions at the working area.

There is a significant amount of historical mining and exploration information available. This information is often distributed throughout a number of reports or plans, available from a variety of sources, and in many differing formats. The ability to capture paper-based historical information in a modem digital format provides mining and exploration companies with valuable information that can be used in a number of ways; for example, reassessments of exploration or mining work previously undertaken, or used in conjunction with current exploration information.   The purpose of this paper is threefold. Firstly, to present the paper-based historical information; highlighting some of the problems encountered, solutions to those problems, and any assumptions used. Secondly, to present the historical data in digital format, and demonstrate the tools available to analyse geological and associated information, and finally, to illustrate some of the potential future applications of the information, including mining optimisation, mine design and scheduling.   The Glenorchy scheelite/gold prospect has been used as an example. Within the overall prospect two smaller areas were selected. The Mount McIntosh and surrounding areas, focuses on exploration and surface excavation information. The Mount Judah area (State and Kelly-Taylor workings) focuses on underground mining and exploration information.

The Brukunga pyrite mine was operated from 1955 to 1972 to supply feedstock for sulfuric acid production in the South Australian fertilizer industry. Iron sulfide ore, mined by Nairne Pyrite Ltd, was finely crushed and concentrated onsite with the concentrates being sent by road and rail to Port Adelaide for roasting. Waste rock was dumped at two locations on the western side of Dawesley Creek and the tailings pumped to a valley-fill storage facility on the eastern side. Production of 1.5 Mt concentrate resulted in 3.5 Mt tailings and 8 Mt waste rock. The site has been administered by the South Australian Government since August 1977 and a lime treatment plant has been operated on the site since September 1980. Environmental issues arising from these operations included: diversion of Dawesley Creek to accommodate the waste rock dumps; dumping of low-grade sulfidic ore in waste rock dumps at the angle of repose immediately adjacent to Dawesley Creek; exposed fresh sulfide mineralisation in the quarry floor; tailings storage facility dam wall constructed by upstream up-lift using tailings and waste rock; an acid water pond sited on the tailings; and pollution of natural drainage. As a result, the minesite rapidly became a source of acid drainage and potential contaminants (sulfate, Al, Fe, Mn, Cd, Zn, and Ni). Various Government bodies have been responsible for considerable effort and expenditure in reducing the flow of acid seepage and contaminants into Dawesley Creek. Presently an estimated 60 per cent of seepage from the waste rock dumps, tailings storage facility and quarry is collected and neutralised prior to discharge into the creek. Tailings have been covered with waste rock, biosolids, neutralisation sludge and soil and planted with grasses, shrubs and trees to reduce rainfall infiltration. Monitoring of water flows, water quality and riparian ecosystems is on-going. Consultants have been engaged to develop cost-effective remediation techniques and a five-member Brukunga Mine Site Remediation Board was appointed to oversee remediation of the site and liaise with the community. Construction has commenced on the diversion of Dawesley Creek, and plans are being developed for the relocation of waste rock back to the quarry benches and upgrading of the neutralisation plant. The paper examines operations, environmental monitoring, remediation, research and community involvement with respect to current best practice.

Advances in technology have led to larger and deeper open pit mines and, consequently, also increased the potential economic impact associated with slope failures. If the ultimate aim of mining operations is to maximise project profit, it is surprising to see related research activities have mostly been focusing on technical areas such as slope stability modelling, but with limited studies conducted to date to assess the relationship between geotechnical uncertainties and economic risk. Given most major decisions in the mining industry nowadays are made by management staff with financial background, any design approach that would help to link slope stability analysis results with monetary values would no doubt enhance communication between geotechnical practitioners and decision makers. This paper presents a study which assesses economic impact of slope failures to assist in mine planning. The study also estimates the impact of slope failures on project value, which would enable economic risks associated with pit slope designs to be closely examined. The proposed risk assessment techniques, used by financial institutions for many years to assess portfolio risks, can assist geotechnical practitioners in quantifying risks of slope failures. Risk-adjusted concepts are also suggested to assist management in selecting a slope design with optimal risk and return ratio.

The provision of professional engineering services in Queensland is regulated through the Professional Engineers Act 2002. The Act requires that anyone providing professional engineering services must be registered and is subject to continuing professional development requirements. The engineering profession is actively requesting the Queensland Government to expand registration to include associate and technologist engineering practitioners. In view of the strong moves at the Federal level towards national registration of professional groups the lessons of the Queensland experience are very relevant across Australia. This paper describes the rationale behind the Act and outlines its operation. It discusses some misconceptions regarding the applicability of the Act to various engineering activities. There is much that the Act has to offer individual engineers and industry generally in establishing, articulating and maintaining standards for professional engineering work. The paper considers legal actions taken to date under the provisions of the Act and discusses the way in which this parallels industry moves towards quality assurance of work force capability.

The MMG Century mine, which is the largest zinc/lead mine in Australia, began operating in 1999 and ceased mining from the open pit in July 2015, with processing completed in early 2016. Closure plans were developed from 2006, and detailed planning for closure commenced in early 2011 with the appointment of a dedicated closure planning resource. The site will continue to be managed during the active and passive closure phases to complete rehabilitation commitments and demonstrate that closure completion criteria have been achieved.Completion of the mining/processing phase of the project provides an opportunity to reflect on successes, missed opportunities and lessons learnt with respect to planning and execution of mine closure. This paper highlights examples of success at Century and also identifies key learnings and areas for improvement in progressive closure outcomes. Specific examples examine mine planning and execution involving bulk movement of waste rock and construction of permanent waste encapsulation landforms. The paper also provides recommendations for other sites that are planning for closure.Decisions made during the operational phase of the project life can result in a significant increase in closure liability and reduce the likelihood of achieving lease relinquishment. "Sheeted vein gold deposits are characterised by multiple subparallel veins and free milling gold. In situ heterogeneity of mineralisation results in grade and process parameter variability, which will increase project risk. Measured variability is often enhanced by poorly designed sampling and test work protocols. Protocols that are optimised within the framework of the theory of sampling to suit the ore type, together with quality assurance/quality control systems, will reduce variability and provide fit-for-purpose results. The geometallurgical approach requires spatially distributed samples within a deposit to support variability modelling. Diverse attributes from core logging, mineralogical/textural determination and small-scale tests are used to measure variability. This contribution emphasises early stage geometallurgical intervention during project development. It presents a discussion of representative sampling in the context of the theory of sampling. Froth flotation process requires the use of frothers. These important flotation agents are commonly characterised as either æselectiveÆ or æpowerfulÆ and are chosen following general guidelines and verification by laboratory and/or pilot plant tests. Fundamental properties of the flotation frothers have been extensively studied over the last few years. These studies have led to the development of standardised procedures to characterise frothers in terms of their ability to reduce bubble size and to increase foam stability. In this research project, the performance of five frothers in flotation of coal is evaluated and related to the fundamental properties of these agents. Since the recovery of water in the concentrate is closely related to the non-selective transport of solid particles by entrainment, the tested frothers are also assessed in terms of their ability to promote the transport of water towards the froth collection zone, both in absence and in presence of solids.

The amphibolite-facies metabasaltic rocks of the Mine Mafic Package at Plutonic Gold Mine, Marymia Inlier, Western Australia, contain an estimated total endowment of 12.2 Moz of Au, which includes 4.71 Moz of past production and 2.77 Moz of reserves and resources; the remainder comprises lower-grade inventory. Over 65?000 multi-element analyses of whole-rock core and face channel samples from the underground workings of the deposit have been collected by portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) using a handheld Innov-X Omega pXRF unit. The analyses were performed on pulverised samples through paper bags, and were corrected using a pulverised, matrix-matched, reference standard. This method of data correction compares favourably with conventional XRF analyses performed on the same samples.A preliminary study based on pXRF analyses from a small number of drill holes found that a geochemical stratigraphy was evident in the pXRF data, and that this stratigraphy strongly controlled the location of Au mineralisation. The present study incorporates a much larger pXRF data set that samples a greater volume of diamond drill core and face channel samples and presents the data in a three-dimensional (3D) framework.This data set allows an investigation of the mineralogy of Au mineralisation with varying geochemical associations across the deposit. Historically, there has been a strong relationship identified between As and Au, which has caused issues with metallurgical performance, rendering some areas of the deposit only marginally economic. Utilising seamless data integration of the pXRF data set allows for recognition of the different styles of Au mineralisation using elemental concentrations and ratios from the multi-element analyses (Au:As, Au:As:Cu, As:Cu vs. K:V), and to visualise the distribution of these different mineralogical associations in 3D. The results of the 3D modelling and geochemical characterisation of the different styles of Au mineralisation are currently the focus of an extensive metallurgical testing program, the preliminary results of which are presented here.

The Work Health and Safety Act 2020 (WA) (WHS Act; DMIRS, 2020) and associated Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022 (WA) (WHS Regulations; DMIRS, 2022), supporting guidance materials and other laws, such as the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth) (SD Act), have imposed new duties on every person or business conducting an undertaking (PCBU) in Western Australia, including those operating in the mining industry. These laws and associated guidance materials combine to require owners, operators and contractors to discharge positive duties and better report and manage psychosocial hazards in the workplace. For mine operators, there is a positive duty to not only identify and eliminate hazards relating to psychological harm, sexual harassment and gendered violence at work, but to also report incidents to the safety regulator that could result in serious harm, even while internal and police investigations are ongoing. Traditional mines safety teams are navigating the evolving frontier of psychological and gendered safety as the duties relating to psychosocial safety and sexual harassment at work continue to expand. This paper will review the legal obligations on PCBUs to conduct internal investigations into critical psychosocial incidents and gendered violence on mines, whilst balancing the demands and sensitivities of investigations by the safety regulator and police. There are emerging approaches to safety investigations that can aid PCBUs in managing their investigations of psychosocial incidents and gendered violence, including trauma-informed investigation techniques, collaboration with psychological experts and the use of limited legal privilege. Well managed and sensitive investigations can foster trust amongst workers, result in improved incident reporting by workers and lead to enhanced safety outcomes for the resources industry whilst preserving the legal positions of involved PCBUs. Specifically traversing the new duty to consult, cooperate and coordinate, this practical session will arm mine managers, safety professionals and human resources professionals, from mine operators and mining contractors alike, with tools and processes to bring to safety investigations, particularly on residential mine sites.

The green energy transition is expected to require a range of valuable minerals, which could be supplied through deep-sea polymetallic nodule mining. Deep-sea polymetallic nodules are mineral deposits with a composition well suited to produce lithium batteries, which are expected to be a necessary energy storage solution (Diouf and Pode, 2015; Paulikas et al, 2020) for the energy transition. By 2050 the annual demand for both cobalt and lithium is estimated to increase by around 450 per cent from 2018 levels (Hund et al, 2023), with the annual demand for nickel being greater than 2 million tons, and copper greater than 1 million tons. Polymetallic nodule mining is well positioned to provide these minerals in the near future. An intricate and comparatively unexplored ecosystem thrives within and surrounding the nodule fields (Smith et al, 2008). Deep-sea mining operations have the potential to disrupt and permanently damage this ecosystem through introduced pollution, artificial noise and light, and habitat destruction. Hence, there is a pressing need for new engineering and scientific endeavours to focus on developing new technologies to reduce any environmental impact from mining.

As students progress further into a degree, the decision of vocation selection, and even more importantly û securing employment in a particular industry sector, can become quite daunting. However, with a little initiative, students can overcome these issues by not only researching what employment opportunities exist, but by applying for summer vacation employment. Undergraduate vacation employment, especially with a world-leading hydrometallurgy research organisation such as the Parker Centre, can dramatically alter a studentÆs perspective of particular industries and possibly even alter their selection of vocation pursuits upon graduating. Students can also use vacation employment to enhance their networking capabilities, technical skills and knowledge by dealing with challenging new topics such as sulfur dioxide leaching, which is also discussed in this article.

The success of a mining operation depends on the quality of data used in decision-making processes and the people involved in making operational decisions. At Olympic Dam, mine geologists form an integral part of the teams that make decisions at various key points in the mine operational value chain. Mine geologists are directly and indirectly involved in all stages of the mining process, namely, orebody definition and categorisation, mine design and planning, metallurgical processing, and reconciliation.Due to the sheer size and complexity of the Olympic Dam deposit, each mining stage has been divided into smaller units within which decisions are made in line with the overall mine operational plan. In each of these units, the decisions and inputs made by mine geologists has ensured that consideration of geological factors is made in the mining process. Over time, the mine geology team has demonstrated a systematic approach in the development and improvement of their processes in line with the mine’s operational needs, such as understanding the in-stope ore variability and maintaining a consistent ore feed to the plant. An understanding and interpretation of the mineralisation distribution, based on acquired data, has proven to be important in the definition of resource modelling parameters. These parameters in turn affect the quality of grade estimates and their downstream use in planning, production and subsequent reconciliation processes. The continual study of the geology of the deposit, and unravelling its complexity through research has been crucial to the metals extraction process. The involvement of mine geologists through each of the mine value processes places Olympic Dam in a favourable position to benefit from future opportunities that will take advantage of the increasing operational demands and production pressures, and the ever changing economic conditions.This paper reviews the role mine geologists play in the realisation of the Olympic Dam deposit, from ore to product, through their interaction and collaboration with other departments and stakeholders. Brunswick Mine, one of the largest underground zinc mines in the world, is scheduled to close in 2010 after almost half a century of production. All mines eventually close; some suddenly as a result of unsustainable economic or technical conditions and others, as in our case, as a result of the depletion of the orebody. When the mine is the most significant employer and an economic driver in the region, it is key that the closure is handled in a planned, communicated, well-executed fashion. The following paper documents strategies, plans and activities that are currently taking place in order to ensure a seamless closure that satisfies all stakeholders including employees, management, regulatory bodies and the public. It is an important deliverable for the company that the good will, credibility and reputation that has been built up over the years is sustained throughout the closure process and beyond. A life of mine labour agreement with the unionised workforce, staff retention and recruiting programs, regulatory closure plans, communications and transition adjustment activities will be discussed. The use of a stage-gate style project management tool analysing the risks and key deliverables will be highlighted. It is hoped that the concepts and approaches discussed here may be of value to other operations that will be faced with closure, and its inherent challenges, in the not too distant future.

‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.’George Santayana (16 December 1863 in Madrid, Spain to 26 September 1952 in Rome, Italy). Philosopher, essayist, poet and novelist.The minerals industry requires specific technical expertise in mining and mineral process engineering, geoscience, environmental science and social sciences to maintain and operate its current business and to develop future projects. A steady supply of new graduates is essential to replace not only retirees, but also those who left the industry during the recent downturn. The supply of trained graduates is however not instantaneous, and there is a four-year lag from entry into university to graduation. It is essential that this lag in human resource supply and a likely shortage of knowledgeable, qualified talent is taken into account when considering risks to the business of mining. The shortage of skilled professionals has in the past resulted in unsustainable salary expectations and is likely to pose financial and execution risk to new projects. This paper will review some recent statistics of students in training from around the world and explore what action is required to not only sustain the training courses that provide future ready talent to the mining industry, but also ensure that graduates from these courses are equipped to create change and be leaders in the industry. The future prosperity of the industry is dependent on delivering sustainable stakeholder returns through the cycle. This will be achieved by developing capable individuals that can respond to the complex, adaptive challenges facing the industry.*This is an abstract only.
