At its Port Kembla Plant, Australian Fertilizers Ltd. manufactures Superphosphate and other Phosphatic Fertilizers.Phosphate Rock is received from Nauru and Ocean Island. It contains water insoluble tri-calcium phosphate, Ca3(PO4), to an average of about 86%.It is crushed to pass a 20-mesh x 26-gauge woven wire screen, and is then treated with Sulphuric Acid to give the product Superphosphate with a water solubie prosphate content of 20.5%, estimated as P205. Sulphuric Acid is made by the chamber process. Three sets of chambers are installed, on,e five-chamber set of timber frame work construction and the other two of more recent date, each with four chambers of steel frame work construction. A fourth chamber set is now being built.Sulphuric Acid is delivered for use. at about 70% H2S04, the strength depending upon the rock used.Mixing - The crushed rock and sulphuric acid are mixed in weighed and measured proportions respectiyely in one-ton batches in revolving cast fron pans, mechanically stirred. The mixture, while still slurry, is run into a closed horizontal concrete cylinder (den) where, with the completion of the chemical reaction, it rapidly sets as Superphosphate.Approximately fifty batches are required to fill a den. When full, the den is opened ana the mass cut out by a revolving cutter. The product is elevated and conveyed to any required position in the Superphosphate storage shed, where it dries and matures.Despatch - As required, the Superphosphate is excavated by a two ton grab and conveyed from the matured "dump" to bagging units where it is disintegrated, screened and bagged at twelve bags to the ton. The filled !Jags are closed by machine and delivered to railway trucks immediately.Mixed Fertilizers - Sulphate of Ammonia, Sulphate and Muriate, of Potash, and Blood and Bone are mixed with Superphosphate and thoroughly incorporated to give different mixtures to meet special plant requirements.

This paper reviews recent positive developments in Europe on the regulation of gold mining. However, it also examines the problem that while gold projects may be bankable and technically and environmental defensible, the odds tend to be stacked against granting of an environmental permit. The historic background to this situation is examined and current developments and initiatives are critically analysed. Standards and benchmarks for the industry have been established across the community and these have a strong influence in European Union accession (and aspiring) states as well. While this is welcome in regard to improving environmental performance, it also represents a significant milestone with mining (and particularly gold mining) now æon the mapÆ as a legitimate enterprise, a situation that was patently not the case prior to 2003. At the project level, very frequently, the difficult biophysical problems are addressed and satisfactorily dealt with according to the new regulations, but still there are problems regards trust and acceptance that underpin a æsocial licenceÆ. What goes wrong and how can companies deal with the social/environmental issues that lead to entrenched views and concerns, irrespective of any amount of demonstration of good practice and corporate social responsibility? What is the role of the non-governmental organisation (NGO) and are they as accountable and responsible as they should be? The findings presented draw upon recent experience with the environmental permitting of projects in Spain, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia on behalf of Australian, Canadian and British companies as well as international funding institutions.

In the heavy minerals industry wet high intensity magnetic separators (WHIMS) are widely applied for primary magnetic separation of magnetic minerals and non-magnetic minerals. This piece of equipment is well known for its robustness to handle a wide range of feed conditions and still produce stable product qualities and yields. A heavy mineral production plant aimed to increase production through their WHIMS plant containing 11 duties and 26 units. Instead of adding new units an alternative approach was followed to firstly maximise the efficiency of the current circuit and secondly to consider possible reconfiguration of the circuit to produce additional product tons for minimal capital investment. In order to characterise the current circuit’s efficiency, identify pockets of excellence and determine the areas for improvement the whole circuit was surveyed several times and mineral mass balances were drawn up.This paper aims to: discuss the modelling process of the WHIMS circuit,explain the calibration and validation process followed to ensure the accuracy, anddemonstrate the sensitivity analysis performed on the different options. From this analysis an efficiency criteria was developed to compare different circuit configurations that enabled the production plant personnel to make an informed decision on the way forward.

Gold placers in the Nokomai and Nevis valleys are dominantly Quaternary in age. They occur mainly in western tributaries of the upper Nevis, eastern tributaries of the middle and upper Nokomai, and in the trunk valleys themselves. Placer gold in both valleys is dominantly a-phase Au-Ag-Hg alloy. Au-Ag alloy is absent or rare in most of the deposits, except in the lower Nokomai. Alpha-Au-Ag-Hg alloy is typically coarse-grained (up to 2 cm), angular, and rarely flattened or folded. Crystalline texture, quartz intergrowths, and psuedo-hexagonal crystal-pluck cavities are common. Fluvial transport distance predicted from the maximum Flatness Index ofAu-Ag-Hg alloy particles is typically less than 10-20 km. Coarse (up to 2 cm) cinnabar is commonly associated with the Au-Ag-Hg alloy, and both were probably derived from hydrothermal sources in western tributaries ofthe upper Nevis and eastern tributaries of the upper Nokomai. Minor secondary Au-Ag-Hg alloy occurs locally in the lower Nokomai, where it coats or cements detrital a-phase Au-Ag-Hg and Au-Ag alloy particles. Au-Ag alloy dominates over Au-Ag-Hg alloy in the lower half of the lower Nokomai alluvial plain and gravel of a raised channel incised into semischist basement adjacent to the plain. The Au-Ag alloy is rounded and commonly flattened and folded. Crystalline texture, quartz intergrowths, and pluck cavities are rare, and a fluvial transport distance of 25-40 km is estimated from maximum Flatness Index ofAu-Ag alloy particles. The Au-Ag alloy, three types of gamet, magnetite, clinozoisite and well foliated schist boulders in the abandoned channel are not found in the pumpellyite-actinolite facies bedrock in the Nokomai. These components were derived from greenschist facies schist and sedimentary sources in Otago, many tens of kilometers north of the Nokomai catchment. They were transported to the Nokomai either in Wakatipu Glacier till or fluvio-glacial outwash that entered the valley via Nokomai Saddle, the confluence with the Mataura, or both.

A general description of the geology of the Southern Coalfield is given. The relationship between the Illawarra Coal Measures, the overlying Triassic and the underlying Upper Marine Series, of Permian age as are the Coal Measures, is briefly explained and thestratigraphy of each is described. The eight coal seams are then treated in slightly more detail as to their thickness, quality, areas of distribution and best occurrences.In the last few years each of the authors has been concerned with one phase or other of the stTucture of the field in detail or in mining operations with the result that it is now possible to name a number of monoclines, anticlines, domes and synclines defined in detail. A minor quantitative study has been made of faults and dykes with regard to form, direction intensity and inter-relationship. It seems probable that with the further collection of data a more detailed study in these matters will be of considerable value to the economy of mining in the Southern Coalfield.

Disequilibrium ratios (U3O8/eU3O8), which assess the degree to which gamma activity represents the uranium content of a sample, have been measured on a representative set of samples from the ore zone of a carnotite ranium deposit located at Yeelirrie, Western Australia. A statistical analysis has been performed to investigate the dependence of the ratios on lithology and on the location of the sample in the orebody. The analysis indicates that dependence on lithology and on position across the orebody is negligible. Samples from the western end of the orebody and those from below the water table level tend to have slightly lower ratios than samples from other positions, although these trends are small compared with a large random variation in the data. The large random variation could result from some redistribution of the daughter isotopes of uranium within the orebody. On the basis of the results from all the samples, the estimated deficiency of uranium relative to radium in the ore zone of the deposit is 11 per cent.

The Porgera gold deposit is an epithermal gold base-metal deposit located in the Enga Province of Papua New Guinea. Gold-silver-sphalerite-galena-pyrite mineralisation is related to stocks and dykes of dioritic composition which have intruded a series of folded marine sediments, mainly shales and siltstones, often with calcareous and carbonaceous horizons, of middle Jurassic to middle Eocene age. The most intensely mineralised zone is at Waruwari Hill, where the mineralisation occurs predominantly as massive mixed sulphide veins, and less frequently as quartz-chlorite veins and as disseminations. Mineralisation occurs in all rock types and several phases of mineralisation have been recognised.

Application of Cleaner Production methods is seen as the key to achieving these joint objectives. In Australia Alcoa has launched a co-ordinated effort to accelerate our application of Cleaner Production principles to delivering cost-effective in-process solutions to environmental issues. Our Western Australian Operations are a signatory to the WA Cleaner Production Statement, through which we provide a Cleaner Production Plan to the State Government on a voluntary basis. This paper describes in general terms AlcoaÆs goals, achievements and directions in applying Cleaner Production to enhance business performance in the economic, environmental and social dimensions. Quantification of the benefits and tracking of progress in quantitative terms is a key challenge for the future

In 2013 the Mopani Copper Mine Mufulira plant in Zambia embarked on a project that was aimed at improving concentrator recoveries. The project commenced with the automation of the milling and flotation circuits. This involved the installation of new instrumentation, namely measurement devices and actuators, and the connection of these to new programmable logic controllers (PLCs).The infrastructure changes were followed by the implementation of basic proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers on the PLCs. Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) interfaces were also implemented to allow for switching between controller modes, inputting of setpoint variables and to provide a visual display for process monitoring. The final phase of the project involved the installation and commissioning of advanced process control (APC) solutions on the milling and flotation circuits. This work was carried out by Mintek over 21 on-site days. The APC solutions included the MillStar and FloatStar suites of advanced controllers.The MillStar control suite focused on stabilising the mill feed and mill discharge on the two primary mills as well as the flotation circuit feed. Mintek’s CyLas instruments, which provide a measurement of the hydrocyclone underflow angle, were also installed. The measurements were incorporated into the discharge stabilisation control on both milling circuits. The FloatStar level stabiliser controller provided flotation cell pulp level control on fourteen cells, including two columns.Performance tests showed that the Mintek APC system stabilised the mill feed and mill discharge while ensuring the process remained within operational constraints. The MillStar control system utilised the CyLas instrument to prevent roping on the hydrocyclone underflow. This was not always achieved under normal operation. Additionally, the flotation section was stabilised as a result of improved level control by the FloatStar control system.Performance comparisons showed that the Mintek control system improved the operation of the milling and flotation circuits resulting in a greater copper recovery.CITATION:Naidoo, A, De Gee, B E and Viviers, N, 2014. The installation of the George Fisher flowsheet in the lead/zinc concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited has recently been completed. The George Fisher flowsheet involved moving flotation capacity from the lead circuit to the zinc circuit and changes in zinc circuitry, changes in the reagent regime and increased regrinding capacity, using IsaMills, to regrind some streams to 80 per cent passing seven microns. The project was highly successful, delivering a five per cent increase in zinc recovery within a fortnight of commissioning. The George Fisher flowsheet was developed over six years. Laboratory work built upon the knowledge gained from investigating and processing the Mount Isa and Hilton orebodies. The engineering design and construction for the brownfield expansion of the existing lead/zinc concentrator had significant involvement from the operational, maintenance and technical personnel. Experienced personnel were seconded from the concentrator to the design and construction groups to ensure smooth integration of the new flowsheet into the existing concentrator with minimum downtime, and maximising the reuse of existing equipment. The combination of thorough design, good project integration with operations, and a good commissioning plan allowed almost immediate delivery of project gains. The project was highly successful, the full design improvements were achieved within two weeks, allowing the focus to move to developing future improvements.

Blast vibration analysis is one of the important topics in the control technology of blast vibration damage. Nowadays, blasting vibration safety standards are based on both the particle velocity and the frequency of vibration and they have been adopted widely and internationally. However, the analysis on vibration frequencies is less studied compared to investigations of peak particle velocity. For the vibration induced by a spherical charge in a viscoelasticly infinite rock mass, an expression of vibration spectrum taking into account the damping effect of rock mass is inferred. Then the attenuation laws of dominant frequencies and centroid frequencies are compared theoretically. For the case of cylindrical charge, dynamic finite element method (DFEM) software of LS-DYNA is employed to analyse the attenuation laws of characteristic frequencies. The research demonstrates that, no matter whether it is a spherical charge or a cylindrical charge, there is a local mutation or fluctuation at some distance when the blast proceeds, while the centroid frequencies conform to a smooth attenuation law. Both the multipeaks structures of vibration spectra and the decay rate difference between high- and low-frequency components contribute to the mutation or fluctuation investigated in this study. Additionally, an increase in longitudinally sonic velocity or the quality factor of rock mass produces an increase in the vibration frequencies, whereas an increase in blast source diameter or the rise time of blast load produces a decrease in vibration frequencies from a spherical charge. In borehole blasting, there is a positive correlation between the vibration frequencies and charge diameter, whereas there is a negative correlation with charge length. And altering the initiation plan will change vibration frequencies to various degrees. Over the past few years, there has been an emerging relationship between business and civil society, especially NGOs. This relationship has the potential to bring about significant change, identifying common ground between commercial and societal interests. The mining industry has been a leader in acknowledging the need for community consultation and engagement. This paper argues that partnerships can make a very significant contribution to the industry as it comes to terms with the dilemma of an open economic system pushing against a closed ecological system.The paper will pose a number of questions: where is the locus for debate about sustainability in the mining sector?; how well embedded within companies are the new competencies that Leon Davis first identified in 1995 for the mining sector?; how has education for mining engineers or exploration geologists changed to prepare people for what are very different expectations within the working environment?; how well is the industry doing in managing its own environmental impact and what is its responsibility to an agenda for sustainability which extends beyond its own operations?;and how can NGO partnerships contribute to more sustainable outcomes? The paper does not aim to answer these questions, but to explore them in the hope that the issues and possibilities raised will contribute to advancing progress towards sustainability within the industry.

In understanding the consequence of existing law, and the likely implications of its reform, it is necessary to comprehend the logic of the situation that the law provides individual decision makers and how that situation would be adjusted by reform. In particular, the way in which natural resources, including minerals, are used and managed is influenced by the definition and structure of property rights that the law provides. Property rights are enforceable claims to use or to benefit from resources. An example is a mining licence that allows its holder to extract minerals in a specified area. Property rights establish the structure of incentives, opportunities and constraints within which resource use decisions are made, ie the logic of the situation, and hence influence the use and management of resources. The extent and type of mining in New Zealand, for example, reflects the rights that miners have to extract minerals, and their rights to benefit from mining as against their duties to compensate landowners and pay royalties. This paper describes the characteristics of minerals that are relevant to the definition of property rights, analyses the implications of alternative property right arrangements and describes the existing situation.

The comparison between J Visman and C O Ingamells’ works with P M Gy’s works has been the object of intense debates in the past. Such negative debates inevitably resulted in a loss of many good opportunities. The author’s long experience in applying works of these three authors led to the pragmatic conclusion that it is relatively easy to integrate everything Visman and Ingamells created into the Theory of Sampling; therefore, it is suggested that the compatibility has been vastly overlooked, and a correction for such anomaly is recommended. It is important to emphasise that Visman and Ingamells works may be beneficial and provide relevant, harmonious additions in some areas, and ultimately offer attractive possibilities to sampling practitioners. Such additions may enhance our capabilities to predict sampling difficulties by using a stronger strategy and to design better sampling experiments that would allow us to further understand the heterogeneity of minor constituents, and especially trace constituents. Basically, the suggested integration is essential for sampling trace constituents in the environment, in food, in chemicals and in the pharmaceutical industries.CITATION:Pitard, F F, 2017. Organo-sulphur-based collectors (eg xanthates, dithiocarbamates and dithiophosphates) are widely used in the flotation of sulphide minerals. Xanthates (ROC(=S)Sû), for example, adsorb strongly at sulphide mineral surfaces, in a reaction that is electrochemically coupled with the reduction of dissolved oxygen. One of the oxygen reduction products, hydrogen peroxide, reacts directly with dissolved xanthate, leading to its oxidative decomposition. Experimental work has been conducted, using ethyl xanthate, to understand the molecular mechanism by which hydrogen peroxide reacts with xanthates. A number of degradation products have been identified, some of which have not been reported previously. This oxidative decomposition reaction pathway is discussed in the broader context of xanthate decomposition in flotation systems. One of the identified ethyl xanthate decomposition products, ethyl perxanthate (ROC(=S)SOû), has been observed in the process water of a number of mineral processing operations. The interaction of this molecule with goethite (α-FeOOH) particles, typical of that found in tailings dams, has been studied in more detail using attenuated total reflectance (ATR)-FTIR. The ethyl perxanthate molecule has been found to coordinate to iron (FeIII) at the goethite surface, and undergo a surface-catalysed decomposition process. In the presence of both PbII and goethite, a ternary surface complex is formed, where ethyl perxanthate is coordinated directly to surface adsorbed PbII atoms. The results obtained give some insight into the environmental fate of ethyl xanthate in tailings streams, and a basis on which to consider the environmental importance of such species in tailings dams. Strategies for the destruction of residual xanthate levels in waste water streams are discussed in terms of the likely reaction products.

Straits completed its Feasibility study on the Whim Creek Copper Project in 1996. At this stage WCCP provided Straits with an open pit mine - heap leach - SX-EW copper project to follow on from its successful Girilambone Copper Operation (GCC). Since this time Straits has continued to review WCCP investigating a number of development and production scenarios. The development of Whim Creek, early 2004 and is on schedule to commence copper production in the final quarter of 2004. On current reserves Whim Creek will produce approximately 17 000 tonnes of copper cathode per annum for three to four years, at cash costs of The paper will cover a general description of the project, the project development and key design issues. Additional construction related issues associated with the complete relocation of the GCC plant to Whim Creek will be covered in the conference presentation.

As requested by my fellow members I shall endeavour to read a paper on the Treatment of the Auriferous Sulphide Ores of Kalgoorlie from a metallurgical standpoint. Before going into the subject it will be necessary for me to make some slight explanations. As most of you are aware many of our London friends holding interests in some of these mines think it necessary that their doings should be shrouded in mystery. The result of this is that in some cases it is impossible to get any official figures from the mines for this paper. I must ask you not to lose sight of the fact that in treating the sulphide ores of the Kalgoorlie mines we had absolutely no data to start on, and that to-day. we are just beginning to get a fair grip of tbe subject; and though very high extractions were announced when the first plants were started on sulphide ore, it was well known that this was only to maintain the public confidence in the mines to allow time to make necessary adjustments; and, as showing the advance made in the treatment of the ore, I notice several of the mines have published the results of the final or re-treatment of the residues of their first sulphide treatment. I have also had the opportunity afforded me of thoroughly sampling the residues of several of the principal mines, and find the results as now published absolutely correct.

Characterising ores in-pit and in real-time presents a significant value opportunity for the mining industry. Hyperspectral imaging systems are proposed as an enabling technology to achieve this real-time characterisation. This paper considers the application of a hyperspectral imaging spectrometer mounted on a shovel. We define the performance requirements for such a spectrometer and associated subsystems during a typical dig-load cycle. The relatively high swing rotation speed of the shovel requires approximately video-rate exposure times to achieve good spatial resolution. We analyse a selection of components against these requirements and find that suitable commercial spectrometers, detectors and optics appear fit-for-purpose. Automated, real-time spectral classification systems are also available, with only relatively modest requirements for processing power. Community members’ sources of information about companies’ social investments are often influenced by the messages in a variety of communication channels, such as newspapers, television and social media. In this sea of communication channels, corporate communications may not always have the desired effect in influencing community perceptions. This paper explores the efficacy of communication between mining companies and communities in Chile through content analysis of corporate sustainability reports and newspaper reporting.Chilean media reporting between 2005 and 2013 is examined to identify community perceptions of corporate social investments made by mining companies. Content within the Chilean newspapers El Mercurio (national) and Soy Chile (regional) is contrasted with content from corporate sustainability reports published by The National Copper Corporation of Chile (Codelco) and Barrick Gold Corporation, Canada (Barrick) for the same period. The objective is to identify differences in the way that corporate social investments are reported by companies in sustainable development reporting and by media in newspapers.Overall, the study demonstrates that the media’s framing and reporting of corporate activities was more negative than positive. Moreover, media outlets tended to focus upon the ‘negative impacts’ or ‘damage’ to communities brought about by mining developments. Conversely, companies’ public communications were largely focused upon direct improvements in livelihoods (health, education, etc) of neighbouring communities. This preliminary study provides a baseline for the development of new formats of effective communication with neighbouring communities.
