CHIEF among the varied problems facing the mine-manager is that of vein-structure and origin, which is highly important as a guide to successful discovery and development. If metalliferous deposits can be traced to the intrusion of waters along definite lines, then is there something tangible for him to study. But when he is told by a geologist that metalliferous deposits are due to some other cause, like magmatic differentiation, while not perhaps discouraged, he is impressed with a vague sense of new worlds to be conquered. In 1897, while manager of the War Eagle mine at Rossland, B. C., where, previously, the ore-bodies had not been supposed to occur as veins, I suggested to visiting members of the Canadian Geological Survey that, perhaps, the structure of the pyrrhotite-bodies of that mine, which had been proved to occur along well-defined fractures, might throw some light on the similar deposits of Sudbury, then held to be basic aggregations from the original magma. Later investigation has at least provoked discussion of this last deduction, questioning its correctness and suggesting that, perhaps, the deposits are actual veins. The following extract from a paper by J. E. Spurr 1 is quoted, because it sets forth Mr. Spurr's theory of the quartz-occurrences of the Silver Peak mines, which will be discussed in this article. It also graphically describes the attendant geological features. THESE ores occur in the Laurentian rocks in the town of Clifton, St. Lawrence County, New York. The Clifton Mining Company have opened these magnetites upon their estate of 23,000 acres, on the waters of the Grasse River, an affluent of the St. Lawrence, which flows for about nine milt",3 across the estate, exposing a section of the formation, and affording ample water-power at numerous points. In approaching this district from De Kalb Junction, upon the Watertown and Ogdensburg Railway, the observer passes from the zone of the specular ores, which abound to a great extent in Jefferson County, across a belt of non-metal-liferous limestones, continuing for some miles intermingled with metamorphic rocks, and gradually giving place to heavy beds of granitic and porphyritic gneiss, the weathered surfaces of which present a gray and rough appearance, from the washing out of the feldspar; leaving the quartz very prominent, and completely disguising the real character of the rock, which, when freshly broken, has a lively reddish appearance from the predominance of flesh-colored and red feldspar. Beds of fine-grained quartzite appear also intercalated in the granitic gneiss. These are the dominating rocks of the magnetite region, but the magnetite is always found, so far as the speaker's observation extended, associated with beds of calcite, carrying hornblende, black and green, biotite, and brown garnet interspersed with yellow and magnetic pyrites. They are usable in the Clifton district. Here too are found the percentages to be added to an estimate for Engineering and General Expense. In Chapter II—Comparative Costs—these elementary costs have been classified, averaged and reported as labor and material unit costs. In such form the labor unit costs, when properly applied to similar conditions as these under which they were derived, are usable anywhere. The trend initiated in January 1936, of stabilized gasoline prices, increased demand and extraordinary drilling activity, continued in California during the year 1937. Crude prices were maintained during the year at the highest level since September 1930. Wildcat activity with resultant new discoveries and development of proven acreage were greater than in any year since 1928. Many fields in California in former years have been produced at full capacity, with consequent loss of reservoir energy, but at the present time continued activity is maintained to develop adequate reserves, so that production in these fields can be taken at a rate to correspond with good operating practice. Naturally, this good operating practice will be influenced to some degree by gas outlets and, in certain instances perhaps, by oil outlets. In any event, these last two controlling features will result in favorable rather than detrimental operation. In fields producing from great depths, ultimate production will be practically limited to the flowing and compressor life of the well, since there is as yet no economical method for pumping wells below depths of approximately 7000 ft. Experience has shown, however, that such pumping difficulties will be overcome and that production secured by pumping will add some to reserves established on the flowing life of the wells. California continued to operate under voluntary curtailment, but with unlimited transfers of allowable between various fields. Even though there was at all times considerable production above the Umpire's established quota, a constantly increasing demand reduced storage during the year. This increasing demand was due mainly to the rapid rise in Pacific foreign shipments from May to September. It is questionable, however, whether this favorable condition will be maintained over a prolonged period. (See Fig. 1.) A number of unique thickener mechanism designs with the operating results achieved in various installations are discussed. These unusual designs include new types of raking arms, lifting devices, and feed-wells employed to obtain higher underflow densities and minimum operator control or improved overflow clarity. Several installations of large thickeners in which the underflow lines pass upward through the center to eliminate tunnels are reviewed. The location of the lines and pumps with the maintenance and operating records are included. Several types of automatic lifting device controls are used to provide storage in the thickener. Some of the installations employing underflow density controls are achieving excellent operating results. Thickeners or sedimentation basins are used in minerals beneficiation plants for three basic purposes. These are 1) Concentration, or to raise the density of a liquid-solids slurry. 2) Clarification, or removal of finely divided solids from a slurry. 3) Hydroseparation, or removal of a specific fraction of solids from a slurry. The concepts that control the size and configuration of basins used for these purposes are different. Likewise, different equipment is properly employed to accomplish these various objectives. The pattern of liquid and solids flow in the clarification zone of a sedimentation basin used for thickening or raising the density of a pulp normally is not critical. That is, the solids normally will drop or plunge to the bottom quite readily, and the liquid separates itself from these solids so as to overflow the basin in a relatively clear condition. When clarification or removal of finely divided particles is to be accomplished, the flow patterns in the basin are extremely important. The velocity of the incoming stream must be dissipated and the liquid flow distributed ]In the tank so that the feed is not divided into streams that flow directly to the overflow carrying the fine:ly divided solids that are to be removed. Similarly, the configuration of the arms that provide the raking and thickening of the pulp is not as important in basins primarily devoted to clarification. In thickening, the design of the arms and the manner in which the pulp is moved or worked, can contribute appreciably to the thickening process and achievement of a higher density underflow. THICKENING As the grade oi ore bodies throughout the world generally decreases, and chemical processes, hydro-metallurgy, and other more refined methods of minerals beneficiation are required, problems in thickening become more acute. Difficult operating conditions, previously encountered only occasionally in thickening metallurgical slurries, or clarifying process streams in the mill, are now the rule rather than the exception. Fig. 1 illustrates some of the different types of raking arms that are successfully achieving the desired goals in pulp thickening. The conventional raking arms consist of a relatively simple truss with the blades attached to the bottom chords. This design provides proper Concentration of many 'normal' slurries. Klopp et al. have reported data on tensile and creep properties of are-melted and electron-beam-melted tungsten. We would like to point out some similarities between their creep results and ours on are-melted and powder-metallurgy tungstenand offer some alternate interpretations of the data which lead to different rate-controlling mechanisms. Klopp et al. observed extensive transient creep in the 2250" to 3500°F temperature range where the acthetivation energy is 106,400 ± 3300 cal mole-1. They suggest cross slip as the possible rate-controlling mechanism since "cross slip may occur only by the movement of screw dislocations, and not edge dislocations, thus allowing only partial recovery of the strain hardening and resulting in a continuously decreasing creep rate, characteristic of transient creep.'' Our tests on are-melted tungsten and powder-metallurgy tungsten displayed an extensive transient creep stage in the same temperature range but they also displayed a steady-state creep stage. The stress levels and strain rates of the two investigations, 1.4 to 7 kg mm-2 and 10-7 to 10-4 sec-1 for that of Klopp et al. and 4.5 to 10 kg mm-2 and 10-8 to 10-4 sec-1 for those of Gilbert et al., are overlapping. The activation energy for creep of our powder-metallurgy tungsten is 105,000 cal mole-1. This close agreement with the value found by Klopp et al. suggests that the same mechanism may be common to both types of materials. It may be possible to gain some additional insight into the rate-controlling mechanism by applying the analysis made by conrad22 in terms of the activation volume. The value for the activation volume depends upon the dislocation mechanism and may be used to help differentiate between various dislocation mechanisms. The activation volume for cross slip is 10 to 100 b3. Values determined from our data were 130 to 220 b3 which are in better agreement with the range of 102 to 104 b3 for nonconservative motion of jogs. Values determined from data of Klopp et al. are 240 to 1040 b3. We suggest that the rate-controlling mechanism for creep in this temperature range may be nonconservative motion of jogs assisted by enhanced diffusion along grain boundaries or dislocations. This model requires an activation energy lower than that for self-diffusion as is observed. If this is the controlling mechanism, a higher activation energy which is closer to that for self-diffusion might be expected for tests conducted on specimens with reduced grain boundary area, i.e., larger grain size. In support of this premise we have conducted tests on speci- mens having one to three grains per cross section for which a higher activation energy of 130,000 cal mole-1 was observed. Also, in agreement with results of Klopp et al., a faster creep rate resulted from the increased grain size and probable decreased dislocation density. Further argument against the cross slip mechanism is based on the constant activation energy we obsserved over the range of 5.0 to 10 kg mm-2,21 whereas the activation energy for cross slip displays a significant stress dependence.23 In addition to this, the powe on the stress term for the strain-rate dependence appears too high for cross slip. The values for tungsten fall in the range of 4.5 to 7 (Klopp et al. and Ref. 21) whereas values of approximately 2 are observed in creep by cross slip for hep metals.24 At temperatures from 3300° to 4000°F, Klopp et al. observed an activation energy of 141,000 ± 4000 cal mole-' which is less than that for self-diffusion, 153,000 cal mole-1, 25 and less than that reported for high-temperature creep of powder-metallurgy tungsten by Green:' 160,000 cal mole-1. Klopp et al. suggested that recovery of strain hardening by dislocation climb is the rate-controlling mechanism in this temperature region. Actually an activation energy larger than that for self-diffusion is predicted by this model if the temperature dependence of the elastic modulus27 is taken into consideration. Klopp et al. attributed this lack of correlation to the compositional differences between powder-metallurgy tungsten used by Green and their own arc- and EB-melted tungsten. It is our position that the value of 141,000 ± 4000 cal mole-' represents a transitional value between the higher and lower activation energies and does not represent a discrete mechanism of deformation. If the tests had been extended to higher temperatures the higher value of activation energy would have been observed as has been demonstrated by both our analy sis'' of isothermal test data by GE-NMPO28 and differential temperature tests28 on are-melted tungsten. The activation energies determined (170,000 and 160,000 cal mole-1) were greater than that for self-diffusion and are in better agreement with the value found by Green. The model of dislocation climb is associated with ; activation volume of 1 b3 according to Conrad.22 The activation volume calculated for the creep data of fou independent investigators in the temperature range where the activation energy for creep is near that for self-diffusion (Klopp et al. and Refs. 26, 28, and 30) is 110 to 2800 b3 and is in the range suggested for nonconservative motion of jogs. THE growth of human knowledge is an evolutionary process. Historically our separate sciences came into existence as people became interested in various apparently unrelated domains of phenomena, and in this manner we acquired the sciences of physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology and geology. As various of these sciences became established, cognizance of them came to be taken by the universities and in this manner there arose the traditional departments of physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology and geology of our American universities. As there was no particular rationality in the boundaries separating the various sciences, in the university departments the jurisdiction of each has assumed quite arbitrary limits. In the domain of earth phenomena the first science to grow up was that of geology, which arose originally from the activities of the collectors science dealing with directly observable terrestrial phenomena for which elementary rational explanations were offered. The traditional treatment of phenomena by the science of geology has rarely been with more than an elementary regard for the fact that these phenomena were also phenomena of physics and chemistry. Since the latter part of the nineteenth century, a new approach to terrestrial phenomena has been emerging and becoming of so great a significance that it can no longer be ignored. This approach has been made by people trained primarily in the sciences of physics and chemistry, who have investigated terrestrial phenomena as constituting phenomena of their respective sciences. In this manner we have acquired the so-called "borderland sciences" of geophysics, the physics of the earth, and of geochemistry, the chemistry of the earth. Neither of these fields is new, having arisen chiefly at the hands of European investigators during the latter part of the nineteenth century. The European universities have long since given official recognition at least to geophysics, by the establishment of departments or institutes of geophysics, which are on a par with the university departments of the other sciences.

The hydration of portland cement is treated as a chemical reaction and the changes in matter, in energy and the rate of change of the process are discussed, Portland cement is a mixture of four major and at least as many important minor constituents. In the hydration process, the four major compounds (trical-cium silicate, dicalcium silicate, tricalcium alumi-nate and tetracalcium aluminoferrite), plus gypsum and water form five or six new compounds. In spite o the great complexity of the reaction, considerable progress has been made in its understanding, primarily with the help of such research tools as X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The rate of the reaction can be followed by direct and indirect methods of measurements. The effects o composition, particle size (or specific surface), temperature and water-cement ratio on the rates of hydration are discussed. The hydration of portland cement is a chemical reaction accompanied by such highly important physical phenomena as heat evolution, setting and hardening. It is a vast and complex subject, on which hundreds of papers have been published. At the time of the writing of this paper, in October 1962, a two-volume book, which alone contains dozens of papers pertaining to cement hydration appeared in print.' The present paper deals with a few aspects of this vast subject, and the selection was not easy. The work reported here deals with some of the most recent investigations in the field. In any chemical reaction, the physical chemist is primarily interested in three things: changes in matter, changes in energy and the rate of change of the process or the speed of the reaction. This is true also of the chemical reaction between portland cement and water, and all three aspects of the reaction will be discussed. These three aspects are of vital interest to the engineer as well. Portland cement is not a cementing material — the hydration products, the new materials which form in the reaction, have the cementing action. The energy changes manifest themselves in a considerable evolution of heat, which may be useful or harmful. It is useful, for example, in winter concreting, but in very large concrete structures like dams, a large evolution of heat, which cannot be easily dissipated, may produce distress in the structure. Primarily for such a purpose was the Type IV or low heat portland cement developed. The speed of the chemical reaction is important because it determines the time of setting and hardening. The initial reaction must be slow enough to permit placing of the concrete before setting occurs. On the other hand, after the placing of concrete it is often highly desirable to obtain as rapid chemical reaction as possible. For this purpose the Type 111 or high early strength portland cement was developed. CHANGES IN MATTER Portland Cement: In a basic investigation, before one begins to study a reaction, one either knows the quantities and compositions of the starting materials, the reactants, or one determines them. This is obvious; the chemist expresses the changes in matter that occur in a reaction by a chemical equation, which has the quantities and compositions of the reactants on the left side of the equation and the quantities and compositions of the reaction products on the right side. The first question is then what to put on the left side of the equation in the reaction between portland cement and water? It is not very easy to answer this question. Portland cement is not a single chemical compound but a mixture of many compounds. Four of these are considered the major compounds, and at least four of the minor compounds also play important roles in the hydration reaction. In order to avoid complicating matters, the present discussion will be restricted primarily to the four major compounds, which constitute usually more than 90% of a portland cement. The relative amounts of these compounds vary from cement to cement. Actually not only the amounts but the compositions of these constituents also vary to some extent, but the variation in composition of the individual components will be neglected for simplicity.

The attention of the members of the Institute of Mining Engineers is asked to a description of the minerals of Southwestern Pennsylvania, as representing the minerals of an enormous area, stretching continuotisly, with local variations, along the western slopes, and at the base of the Alleghany Mountains, through Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, and destined to play no mean part in the future of the iron trade of the country. The particular locality is at and near Donbar, in Fayette County, where the most careful examinations and extensive developments have been made. The deep gorges cut by the Youghiogheny and Monongahela Rivers, in their passage through the mountains and lower lands, give admirable facilities for observing the measures lying between the sandstones of No. 11 and the upper coal measures. Apart from its varied mineral and agricultural resources this section of country has great historic interest attaching to it. It was down the Monongahela that Braddock led his ill-fated army to its defeat under the wails of Port Duquesne, and it was up the Youghiogheny River and Dunbar Creek that the shattered remnants hastily fled to gain the camp of Colonel Dunbar, the second in command, who was entrenched upon a high knob, at the head of the creek which bears his name, and which is still known and visited as Dunbar's Camp. Numerous streams, runs, and localities preserve the names of the guides and pioneers who accompanied, in early colonial times, young George Washington, who was pushing his surveys into the trackless and hostile wilderness, and many of them taking up large tracts of

INTRODUCTION The selection of mass mining methods is the situation facing not only planners of new operations, but also those involved with cur- rent operations, including the eventual change from open-pit to underground. Increasing ground control problems on many mines, plus a better understanding of dilution and ore loss problems have meant a review of current mining methods and support techniques. Experiments are only successful if conducted in the right mining environment and on the right scale. Mining personnel have been known for their conservatism and will tend to persevere with an established method rather than change; often, hidden costs will obscure the correct economic assessment. An established mining sequence is not necessarily correct in the long term. However, recommendations to change are usually met with opposition because of inconvenience, temporary production problems and the desire for a trouble-free guarantee. In any planning exercise, care must be taken that time and money are not wasted in trying to achieve the unattainable. During the decision-making period, production personnel must be involved, and, if possible, they should visit similar omrations to that proposed. Co-operative production personnel will help ensure success. Descriptions of mining methods are available in technical papers and books, and it is not intended to discuss this aspect, but, rather, the various factors which must be recognised before arriving at a final selection. In another paper presented at this Conference (Heslop and Laubscher, 1981) factors affecting ore recovery and dilution are discussed in greater detail for various cave mining methods. PRELIMINARY CONSIDERATIONS Comprehensive Geological Data. Geological information is available during the exploration stage, but, often, core from exploration drilling is not analysed with the selection of a mining method in mind. Drilling costs are high, therefore the maximum benefits must be derived from this operation. Holes which have not intersected ore may provide data on possible shaft sites, and 35 mm colour slides of core, sound logging and geomechanics classification, will provide a record which can be used with confidence at a later date. Intersections of the various rock types should be kept for future study; for example, is weathering likely to be a problem, bearing in mind that this can be accelerated in the warm, humid atmosphere of an underground mine. The accumulation of data required to select a mining method starts with initial geological work in the target area, whether this be surface mapping or a diamond drill hole. Publications. As technical papers, reports and books are used in the selection of mining methods, an appeal is made to authors to describe the geological environment so that readers can relate to their own conditions. Not enough emphasis is given to the problems experienced and the techniques employed to overcome them. Follow-up papers are seldom written and we should be prepared to discuss our failures. Diagrams are often misleading, as the ideal and not actual situations are depicted. The caved ore/waste interface is not a straight line, and whereas this may not be significant in a diagram of a 200-117 draw height, it certainly is in sub-level caving with draw zones only 1 - 2 m width but up to 20 m high. SUMMARY OF FACTORS AFFECTING THE SELECTION OF UNDERGROUND MASS MINING METHODS (a) Regional rock stresses and mining geometry. (b) The geomechanics rock mass classification of the orebody and surrounding rock mass. (c) Ratio of the surface area of the ore/unpay interface to the contained ore which determines ore losses and dilution. (d) The cavability and fragmentation data of the ore and hangingwall. (e) The mineral distribution in the orebody and its dilution zone.

Research, primarily, is finding out the truth. Research applied to enigeering opens the door to new principies and processes, the application of which benefits mankind in a material way. The engineer believes that investigation instituted with the primary view of making the results directly applicable to the industries is the highest type of research. Coal is essentially the basis of modern industrial civilization; therefore, any considerable research pertaining to coal must link itself to the industry by practical application of the results of the research. In other words, all investigational work connected in any way with coal leads to conclusions that permit a better understanding of the origin, nature of occurrence, composition, better and safer mining, more careful preparation, or greater efficiency in utilization of coal. Modern engineering research has been fostered essentially by universities and in the laboratories of institutions of learning. Coal problems that lend themselves to solution in the laboratories have been first attacked and are perhaps the farthest toward solution. For example, a great amount of research work has been carried out with the various phases of chemistry connected with coal. On the other hand, the equally important problems connected with methods of mining have received but little attention, primarily because their solution involves the continued use of a great and expensive laboratory, which is none other than the mine itself. As many of the problems already solved have had chemistry as their background, so many of the problems unsolved have physics as their background; there are also unsolved problems that deal in coal economics. Even psychology must be called upon in future coal-mining research as a basis for solving those great problems that deal with human relationships. 'In general, considerable advance has been made in coal research dealing with chemistry, not so much progress has been made with problems having physics and engineering as a background, while there is a tremendous range of untouched problems that deal essentially with business and psychology. INTRODUCTION The western USA contains significant coal reserves in seams 10 feet or more in thickness which lie too deep for surface mining. As part of a demonstration of the use of two legged shield supports in the United States, Kaiser Steel Corporation, under contract to the US government used the longwall method to mine a ten foot thick coal seam in New Mexico. Caliper type shield supports and double drum shearers were used in three longwall panels. During the test, technical, production, and safety data were collected to objectively evaluate the performance of the shields in mining the thick coal seam. Some months since, in the Johannesburg gold-fields of South Africa, the attention of the author was directed to certain statements to the effect that the gold-contents of foul or extremely dilute cyanide-solutions could not be effectively precipitated in practice by the usual zinc-method. Such statements caused all the greater surprise, because it is well known that this difficulty is not encountered in other wellknown districts, as, for example, in New Zealand, where solutions containing less than 0.05 per cent. of KCy are regularly reduced in practice to below 1 grain of gold per ton, while in Mexico and the United States almost equally satisfactory precipitations are not uncommon. As a result of these representations, however, the author visited several plants at work in the Transvaal, and noted that while at some few mines the precipitation was really excellent, at others the effluent, after treatment, was much too high in bullion-contents. An investigation into the causes of these unsatisfactory results disclosed the fact that more attention to the close packing of the zinc-shavings in the extractor-compartments tended to improve the results, even with the most dilute solutions. The function of the zinc being one of surface, it stands to reason that a compartment well filled with zinc would be more effective than a half-filled one. Moreover, the quality of the zinc was inferior. This should be in long, tough, thin, light threads; light enough to ignite readily, and tough enough not to disintegrate easily into a slime. The coarse shavings too frequently employed appear to give the reverse of the best practice ; they are brittle, contain less surface, and take up more room. It was shown through high-pressure experiments that tin loss by volatilizatim is necessary for the degrada-tion of the superconducting transition temperature of Nb,Sn associated with high-temperature annealing. Crystallochemical analysis of the degraded Nb3Sn showed that it constitutes a new phase with ordered niobium-site vacancies, created by the migration of niobium atoms to vaccnt tin sites. This new phase was found to form when 4 pct Nb-site vacancies were present. It has a transition temperature of 6'K and a lattice parameter of 5.283A. A similar degradation effect was observed in Nb,Al. Its superconducting transition temperature dropped from 16.5" to 8" K following a high-temperature annealing. The superconducting temperature degradation in these 0-tungsten structure compounds is attributed to the disruption of the interchain d bonding by the periodic interruption of the niobium atom chains. By annealing the degraded Nb, Sn at 1000 C in nitrogen its normal superconducting behavior is restored most likely due to the incorporation of nitrogen atoms causing the elimination of the ordered vacancies. HANAK et al.' have observed low superconducting transition-temperature values (T, - 9"K) in some NbsSn samples deposited from the vapor phase. They attributed such low T, values to disorder in the 0-tung-sten structure. Much lower T values (down to 5.6"K) were reported by Reed et al.zC for NbsSn samples annealed at high temperatures. These authors also attributed this degradation effect to disorder (random occupation of the A and B sites by niobium and tin) but pointed out that such disorder could be brought about (by high-temperature treatment) only in samples containing niobium in excess of the stoichiometric composition NbsSn. Both groups reported that the normal superconductivity behavior could be rever-sibly restored by appropriate heat treatment. Courtney et al., also found that degradation in NbsSn requires excess niobium brought about by the loss of tin during the treatment. However, these investigators proposed that the degradation is due to niobium-site vacancies resulting from the migration of the niobium atoms to the vacated tin atom sites. They did not consider the reversibility of the effect. The present study attempts to establish the nature of the above degradation phenomenon. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES All compounds prepared for this investigation were made from the powders or filings of the elements which were intimately mixed, cold-pressed into a cylindrical pellet at approximately 50,000 lb per sq in., and then submitted to the desired heat treatment. The samples annealed under high pressure were placed in a MgO sample container which was mounted in a pyrophyllite tetrahedron designed for a tetra-hedral-anvil press. Details of the experimental arrangement are given elsewhere. This setup allowed heating at 1800°C or above under pressures in excess of 30kbars for 3 hr. The samples annealed in a vacuum were prepared in a high-temperature vacuum furnace which could reach temperatures up to 2400°C under a pressure of 2 x lo-' Torr. For annealing in a reactive atmosphere, a quartz tube was placed in a clamshell furnace and the desired gas ambient passed through the tube. Lattice parameters were determined using a Debye-Scherer 114.6-mm camera. Cohen's method, programmed for the IBM 7094 computer, was used to calculate the lattice parameter from the measured d spacings. X-ray integrated intensity measurements were made on several samples. These samples were ground to -400 mesh and the powder mixed with a solution of collodion in amyl acetate. The mixture was poured into a depression milled in a bakelite disc. When the mixture dried, the surface of the disc was ground flat leaving a diffraction surface defined by the face of the disc. The disc was mounted in a Philips rotating specimen holder which allowed the rotation of the sample in the plane of the diffraction surface and the integrated intensity measured using a scintillation counter and a pulse-height analysis sys-tem. The superconducting transition temperatures were determined by means of self-inductance techniques.' EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The Role of Tin Loss in the Degradation of Super-conductivity. The loss of tin during high-temperature annealing can be effectively suppressed by annealing under high hydrostatic pressures. Accordingly, a series of experiments were performed under pressures of approximately 30kbars. This pressure was the minimum under which high-temperature experiments could be safely performed in the particular pressure apparatus employed. Experiments were also designed to test high-pressure effects on the superconductivity behavior of NbJSn. The results of the high-pressure annealing experi-ments are summarized in Table I. The mining methods adopted in Japanese mines are less known to the mining world than those of other countries, owing to the geographical remoteness, but they present many features of interest to mining engineers. The Ashio copper mine is at the town of Ashio, in Tochigiken, about 109 mi. (175 km.) from Tokyo by the Imperial Government railroad. The area of the concession owned by the Furukawa Mining Co. is 5000 acres (5023 ha.). The mine was formerly divided into three, viz. Hon-ean, Kotaki, and Tsudo, which are distant 3 mi. (4.8 km.) from each other as shown in Fig. 1. However, in 1914, when the writer was general manager, the three mining plants were amalgamated into one with the result of simplifying the working projects and increasing the operating efficiency. The mine was visited by the Institute party in November, 1911, when K. Inouye was the general manager. Shortly afterward, the writer was appointed manager, and, in 1915, he was succeeded by Dr. K. Asano. At the end of 1917, K. Kibe became general manager and, after two years, was succeeded by the present manager, I. Sugimoto. For some time Dr. J. Kojima was acting general manager. It is necdless to say that the gentlemen mentioned are all members of the Institute, as is also Baron T. Furukawa, president of the company. Since the discovery of the enormous masses, called "kajika" or "bullhead" deposits, which the writer has described elsewhere,' the mining methods have been varied to meet the different conditions presented by these deposits. The Ashio Ore The country rock of this mine consists of the middle Chichibian slate and quartzite into which has been intruded a post-Tertiary plagio-liparite neck more than 2 mi. in diameter, in the shape of an inverted cone which narrows downward to a relatively small diameter in depth.

THE treatment of slime is of special interest to those engaged in cyaniding gold- and silver-ores. The usual practice is to make as small a percentage of slime as possible. In many instances the slime is given no treatment, but is impounded in dams in the hope that the future will develop some method of economically treating this product. The filter-press was the first step upward from ordinary decantation, but, on account of heavy labor-charge and high cost, its use has been limited to high-grade material. The slime at the Combination mill at Goldfield averages perhaps $20 per ton, and although the values are quickly dissolved the filter-press installation was not entirely satisfactory, resulting in the erection of the canvas-cell filter, developed by Chas. Butters and his staff. This filter is a great improvement over the filter-press, and the following description of it will be of interest to those engaged in treating slime produced in crushing ores, especially in view of the fact that, by the use of this filter, slime can be treated at a lesser cost and with a higher percentage of gold- or silver-extraction than in the ordinary treatment of sand; and, moreover, the initial outlay for an all-sliming plant is less than that for the ordinary sand- and slime-plant. The economy of construction of the Butters filter-plant is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which illustrate the 20-frame filter of 40 tons capacity, now being installed by the Nevada Goldfield Reduction Co. In this construction the slime-pump is so connected that it can pump to or from either tank or the filter by changing the valve-settings-a combination which is necessary in this particular installation, since sufficient fall is not available for filling and discharging the filter by gravity. On one occasion when it seemed desirable to reveal under the microscope not only the metallic structure of an alloy, but certain small non-metallic inclusions that are ordinarily obliterated by etching, it was discovered that, by partly eclipsing the illuminating pencil of light rays, the residual light was thrown on the object from one side and the structure was brought out in relief. At the same time, the non-metallic inclusions were retained in clear view. In this first demonstration of lighting obliquely through the objective a card was thrust part way into the light beam between the arc iris and the light filter; the shadow of the card on the filter served to locate its position. Next several stiff-paper disks of various diameters were mounted on flexible wires; some plasticine on the other end of the wires made it easy to adjust and maintain a disk at any desired position in the light beam. To facilitate manipulation, an assortment of disks was mounted on a wheel, as shown in Fig. 1. The purpose of partly eclipsing the light beam was discussed in an earlier paper.' There it was pointed out that the usual methods of illuminating opaque objects for microscopic examination lend an unnatural appearance to the view, while the new method, which has been termed conical illumination, revels the true relationship of constituents by simulating natural lighting. In nature, all objects are lighted diffusely, or by light predominating from one direction, or by a combination of diffuse and directed light. Under these conditions, objects appear to have three dimensions—they possess relief. The kind of illumination known to metallographists as vertical or axial results in an unnatural appearance, as a large proportion of the illuminating rays are parallel to the line connecting the eye with the object, a condition almost never met in nature.
